Meoneura joedaltoni spec. nov. (Figs. 15���18) Holotype ♂: (1) ���I: Amatrice-5kmS, pi- / ne wood nr.pasture / 42.39N / 13.20E 1700 m / Bart��k 3.viii.1988 ���; (2) ��� Holotypus / Meoneura joedaltoni / spec. nov. ♂ / det. Stuke 2018���. The holotype is deposited in the collection of the Czech University of Life Sciences, Czech Republic, Prague (CULSP). The specimen is glued on a card. Otherwise the specimen is in good condition. The posterior part of abdomen is dissected, macerated and stored in a glycerine microvial pinned underneath the specimen. Description of holotype (male). Length about 1.5 mm. Wing length 1.2 mm. Head height 0.4 mm. Face, anterior half of frons and gena below the eye orange brown. Posterior half of frons brown with frontal triangle black. Occiput and main part of gena black. Antenna brown. Arista without pubescence. Maximum eye length: maximum eye height = 1.0. Posteroventral margin of gena closest to eye margin: maximum eye height = 0.6. Frons slightly microtomentose, slightly microtomentose. Frontal triangle distinct, reaching about 1/3 distance from anterior ocellus to frontal margin. Face microtomentose. Carina broad, almost as broad as fore tibia. Postcranium microtomentose. Prementum and palpus cannot be examined at the holotype due to the preparation. 1 distinct ocellar seta; supralunular almost parallel; 4 fronto-orbital setae (2 anterior mesoclinate, 2 posterior lateroclinate), the posterior mesoclinate seta short, only 1/3 of the length of the anterior mesoclinate seta. Perhaps this short seta is an additional anterior mesoclinate seta and another larger mesoclinate seta is broken (on both sides of the head). 2 vertical setae; 2 mesoclinate postorbital setae; postocellar setae slightly divergent; 1 strong vibrissal seta; supravibrissal setae incomplete in the holotype; 1 strong and 2 slightly smaller genal setae. Scutum microtomentose, covered with short, semiadpressed black setulae. Scutellum microtomentose. Pleurae���as far as can be seen in the type���microtomentose. Scutum with 1 long posterior dorsocentral seta only. 2 postpronotal setae; 1 praesutural seta; 2 notopleural setae; 1 supraalar seta; 2 postalar setae; 1 praescutellar seta; 1 apical and 1 lateral scutellar seta. Setae on katepisternum and anepisternum cannot be examined in holotype. 1 dorsal seta and 1 ventral seta on katepisternum. Costa with no obvious setae beyond radial vein R 1. Wing hyaline, veins light yellow to yellow brown. R 4+5 slightly curved to apex of wing. Haltere brown, base of haltere brown. Legs black to brown. Fore femur basally with 2 and apically with 2 strong posteroventral setae. Hind femur apically with 1 strong anteroventral seta. All coxae with single inconspicuous black setae. Hind metatarsus ventrally with dense yellow golden setae. Length metatarsus 2: length tibia 2 = 0.5. Tergites with no obvious depressions or tufts of setulae. Abdominal pleura with scattered setae on abdominal segments 3���5. Abdominal segments 1���5 narrow, width of tergite 3: length of tergite 3 = 3.1. Tergites 2���5 each with 1 distinct lateral seta at the posterior margin, and tergite 5 with 2 setae at the posterior margin. Sternite 5 wider than long; the posterior margin slightly concave (Fig. 18). Sternite 5 with scattered setae in the posterior half. Midventral tergite 7 distinct. Protandrium small, shorter than epandrium and about 0.4 of length of tergite 5. In the holotype the protandrium is almost completely hidden by tergite 5. Epandrium with four outstanding lateral setae���the basal distinctly longer than the three other���and one smaller setae (Fig. 15). Maximum length dorsally in the middle of epandrium: maximum width of epandrium = 0.4. Cerci indistinct, not projecting, and no setulae recognized. Subepandrial plate distinctly sclerotised. No setula recognized on subepandrial plate. No proceeding of hypoproct. No tooth on subepandrial plate. Surstylus as in Fig. 16: large, parallel sided, anteriorly rounded. Surstylus with few setulae only. No lamella. Postgonite as in Fig. 17: distinctly sclerotised, broad, hardly elongated, dorsoapically pointed. Distiphallus small, inconspicuous, curved, longer than epandrium and surstylus, covered with dense light brown setulae. Basiphallus obviously sclerotised, long, narrow, at its base widened. Diagnosis. An exciting character of M. joedaltoni is the completely brown halter that is otherwise only known from European Meoneura elongella Zetterstedt, 1838, Nearctic M. nigrifrons Malloch, 1915 and Nearctic M. wirthi Sabrosky, 1959. While the two Nearctic species have completely different structures at the postabdomen (cf. Sabrosky 1959) the European M. elongella is only known from female specimens. The most obvious character to distinguish the holotype of M. joedaltoni and a female of M. elongella from Norway is the more yellow coloured head (face, gena at eye margin and about half of the frons) of M. joedaltoni. This character is important in other Meoneura species, for example to distinguish the closely related species of the M. flavifacies -group. It is described in Zetterstedt��s description of M. elongella. Another obvious character is the higher face between antennal groove and upper mouth opening (higher than fore tibia diameter) in M. joedaltoni. In regard to the postabdomen, Meoneura joedaltoni belongs to the Meoneura palaestinensis -group sensu Stuke & Freidberg (2017) that is characterised by a broad and anteriorly rounded surstylus and the lack of an adjected lamella (Fig. 16). M. joedaltoni is easily identified by this unique combination of characters: (1) face and anterior half of frons orange yellow; (2) carina about as broad as fore tibia; (3) scutum and scutellum distinctly microtomentose; (4) 1 dorsocentral only; (5) haltere completely brown; (6) epandrium with 1 outstanding and 3 distinct setae (Fig. 15); (7) cercus indistinct and without recognized setae; (8) surstylus as in Fig. 16: large, almost as long as epandrium, parallel sided, not narrowing basally, apically rounded, not tapering and not hyaline apically; (9) hypoproct without any proceeding; (10) sternite 5 slightly wider than long, hind margin slightly concave (Fig. 18). A key of the Meoneura palaestinensis -group was published by Stuke & Freidberg (2017). M. joedaltoni will run to the last couplet 4 together with M grimmorum Stuke & Freidberg, 2017 and M. palaestinensis Hennig, 1937, but will not be assigned to one of these species due to the very different shape of the surstylus and the combination of characters mentioned above. Etymology. The species is named after Joe Dalton, the smallest of the four Dalton brothers, who appear in the Lucky Luke comic book series of Maurice de Bevere (Morris) and Ren�� Goscinny. Joe is the smallest of the four Dalton brothers as Meoneura joedaltoni is one of the smallest Acalyptratae. Distribution. Meoneura joedaltoni has been caught only at the locus typicus, a pine wood 5 km south of Amatrice (Latium, Italy). The coordinates of the label don��t fit exactly to this description but are about 4 km ssw of Amatrice. Meoneura baechlii spec. nov. (Figs. 7���10) Holotype ♂: (1) ���I: Mte. Terminillo / meadow nr. wood / 42.26N / 13.07E 2000 m / Bart��k, 4.viii.1988 ���; (2) ��� Holotypus / Meoneura baechlii / spec. nov. ♂ / det. Stuke 2018���. The holotype is deposited in the collection of the Czech University of Life Sciences, Czech Republic, Prague (CULSP). The specimen was glued on a card point and the abdomen was glued, too. Therefore, it was necessary for examination to macerate the complete specimen and store it in a glycerine microvial pinned underneath the label. The specimen is in a poor condition with most setae of the body surface broken and the thorax is broken. Therefore, the description of head and thorax is incomplete. Description of holotype (male). Length about 1.6 mm. Wing length 1.2 mm. Head height 0.3 mm. Head black. Antenna black to dark brown. Arista without pubescence. Maximum eye length: maximum eye height = 1. Posteroventral margin of gena closest to eye margin: maximum eye height = 0.5. Frons microtomentose, frontal triangle shining to subshining. Frontal triangle distinct, reaching about 1/2 distance from anterior ocellus to frontal margin. Carina narrow. Postcranium microtomentose. Prementum about as long and slightly wider than labellum. Palpus brown, about 1/2 as long as the haustellum. Scutum with 1 long posterior dorsocentral seta, other setae or scars of setae could not be detected. Costa with no obvious setae beyond radial vein R 1. Wing hyaline, veins light yellow to yellow brown. R 4+5 slightly curved to apex of wing. Knob of haltere whitish yellow, base of haltere brown. Legs black to brown. Fore femur apically with 2 strong posteroventral setae, other setae could not be recognized. Hind femur apically with 1 strong anteroventral seta. Length metatarsus 2: length tibia 2 = 0.5. Tergites with no obvious depressions or tufts of setulae. Abdominal pleura with scattered setae on abdominal segments 4���5. Abdominal segments 1���5 moderately narrow, width of tergite 3: length of tergite 3 = 2.0. Tergites 2���4 each with 1 distinct lateral seta at the posterior margin, tergite 5 with an obvious long lateral seta and 3 long submedial setae at the posterior margin. Sternite 5 almost rectangular (Fig. 10). Sternite 5 with scattered setae. Midventral tergite 7 distinct. Protandrium long, about as long as epandrium and about 0.8 of length of tergite 5. Epandrium apically with long setae and with several smaller setae (Fig. 7). Maximum length dorsally in the middle of epandrium: maximum width of epandrium = 0.8. Cerci distinct, distinctly projecting, and with a few setulae only. Subepandrial sclerites sclerotised and distinctly separated by the hardly sclerotised hypoproct. No setula recognized on subepandrial plate. No proceeding of hypoproct. No tooth on subepandrial plate. Surstylus as Figs. 7, 8: bifurcated, with a smaller, slightly stronger sclerotized, short, pointed dorsal part and a larger, anteriorly rounded ventral part. Dorsal part of surstylus dorsally with several obviously long setae and apically with inconspicuous short setulae. No additional lamella recognized. Postgonite as in Fig. 9: distinctly sclerotised, with a broad base, slightly elongated, pointed, apically not bent like a hook. Distiphallus slightly longer than epandrium and surstylus, covered with dense black setulae that form a dark surface over almost the complete distiphallus. Basiphallus obviously sclerotised, long, narrow, at its base not widened. Diagnosis. Meoneura baechlii has a distinctive postabdomen with a bifurcate surstylus (Figs. 7, 8). The ventral part of surstylus is larger than the dorsal part. Only the dorsal part has long setae that are about twice as long as surstylus. The ventral part has only a few less conspicuous setae. Several long setae arise apically on the epandrium and are about as long as length of epandrium (Fig. 7). The only species that is similar to M. baechlii due to the shape of the surstylus is M. nevadensis Lyneborg, 1969. Concerning the original description M. nevadensis has only 2 small setae at the dorsal part of the surstylus and no setae at the ventral part (Lyneborg 1969: 43, Fig. 21). M. nevadensis has some long setae apical at the epandrium, too, but these are only about as long as height of epandrium. Etymology. This species is dedicated to Prof. Dr. Gerhard Baechli (Z��rich). No dipterist collected more Carnidae and Gerhard Baechli��s contribution to the knowledge of this hardly known family cannot be overstated. Distribution. Meoneura baechlii is hitherto only known from the locus typicus Monte Terminillo of the Abruzzi Apennine (Italy) at a height of 2000 meter. Meoneura mucki spec. nov. (Figs. 19���23) Holotype ♂: (1) ��� SU: Amankutan / pasture / 39.19N / 66.55E 1300 m / Bart��k, 23.v.1989 ���; (2) ��� Holotypus / Meoneura mucki / spec. nov. ♂ / det. Stuke 2018���. The holotype is deposited in the collection of the Czech University of Life Sciences, Czech Republic, Prague (CULSP). The specimen is glued on a card point and therefore only the left side of head without proboscis and thorax could be examined. Otherwise the specimen is in good condition. The posterior part of abdomen is dissected, macerated and stored in a glycerine microvial pinned underneath the specimen. Description of holotype (male). Length about 1.9 mm. Wing length 1.4 mm. Head height 0.4 mm. Head black with anterior half of frons yellow brown. Antenna black to dark brown. Arista without pubescence. Maximum eye length: maximum eye height = 0.9. Posteroventral margin of gena closest to eye margin: maximum eye height = 0.5. Frons slightly microtomentose to subshining, frontal triangle shining. Frontal triangle distinct, reaching about 1/2 distance from anterior ocellus to frontal margin. Face and proboscis cannot be examined due to preparation of the specimen. Postcranium slightly microtomentose. 1 distinct ocellar seta; supralunular setae convergent; 4 fronto-orbital setae (2 anterior mesoclinate, 2 posterior lateroclinate); 2 vertical setae; 2 mesoclinate postorbital setae; postocellar setae slightly divergent; 1 strong vibrissal seta; 2 supravibrissal setae, the ventral one indistinct and much smaller; 2 strong genal setae. Scutum shining to subshining, anterior 2/3 covered with black setulae. Scutellum microtomentose. Pleurae ���as far as can be seen in the type���shining. Scutum with only 1 long posterior, 1 intermediate medial, and 1 smaller anterior dorsocentral seta. 1 postpronotal seta; 1 praesutural seta; 1 anterior and 2 posterior notopleural setae; 1 long and 1 inconspicuous short supraalar seta; 2 postalar setae; 1 praescutellar seta; 1 apical and 1 lateral scutellar seta. 1 seta at posterior margin of anepisternum. 1 dorsal seta and 1 ventral seta on katepisternum. Costa with no obvious setae beyond radial vein R 1. Wing hyaline, costa light brown, other veins white to light yellow. R 4+5 slightly curved to apex of wing. Knob of haltere whitish yellow, base of haltere brown. Legs black to brown. Fore femur apically with 3 and basally with 2 strong posteroventral setae. Hind femur apically with 1 strong anteroventral seta. Hind metatarsus ventrally with dense yellow golden setae. Length metatarsus 2: length tibia 2 = 0.6. Tergites with no obvious depressions or tufts of setulae. Abdominal pleura with scattered setae on abdominal segments 4���5. Abdominal segments 1���5 narrow, width of tergite 3: length of tergite 3 = 2.5. Tergites 2���4 each with 1 short lateral seta at the posterior margin, and with 2���4 indistinct setae at the posterior margin. Sternite 5 almost rectangular, about as long as broad (Fig. 23). Sternite 5 with 2 lateral setae, the posterior obvious long (Fig. 23). Midventral tergite 7 not recognized. Protandrium small, slightly shorter than epandrium and about 0.5 of length of tergite 5. Epandrium with few setae (Fig. 19). Maximum length dorsally in the middle of epandrium: maximum width of epandrium = 0.5. Cerci indistinct, not projecting, and with a few setulae only. Subepandrial plate hardly sclerotised with the exception of a x-shaped brown structure. Subepandrial plate with scattered, hardly visible fine setulae. Obvious proceeding of hypoproct with 4 large setae on the laterally projecting part and several fine setulae basally. No tooth on subepandrial plate. Surstylus as Figs. 19, 21���22: with a slightly broadened base, falcated, and with a broad apical tip. Surstylus with short, strong setae apically, and long setae ventrally. No lamella. Postgonite as in Fig. 20: distinctly sclerotised, with a small base, elongated, pointed, apically bent like a hook. Distiphallus ���as far as can be seen in the type���short and with dense brown setulae. Diagnosis. Meoneura mucki belongs to the Meoneura obscurella -group that is characterised by a distinct process of hypoproct that has long distinct setae (Fig. 19). From all other species of this group M. mucki is easily distinguished by the unique falcated surstylus with a densely haired tip (Figs. 19, 21). Process of hypoproct has 4 large setae (Fig. 19). Mesoscutum and pleurae are shiny and contrasting with the microtomentose scutellum. If characters of setation turn out to be constant 3 notopleural setae, 2 postalar setae and 2 mesoclinate postorbital setae are remarkable characters. A key of the Meoneura obscurella -group is published by Stuke & Freidberg (2017). M. mucki will run to the last couplet 11 together with Meoneura prima (Becker, 1903) and Meoneura goldemari Stuke & Freidberg, 2017 but will not be assigned to one of these species due to the very different shape of the surstylus. Etymology. The ���Kleine Muck��� is a participant of Wilhelm Hauf��s fairy tale ���Die Karavane���. The Kleine Muck is a small misshapen figure and outsider as Carnidae are small inconspicious Diptera in which hardly anybody is interested in. Distribution. Meoneura mucki is hitherto only known from the locus typicus Aman-Kutan (near Samarkand, Uzbekistan). Palpus brown, about 1/2 as long as the haustellum. 1 distinct ocellar seta; supralunular setae convergent; 4 fronto-orbital setae (2 anterior mesoclinate, 2 posterior lateroclinate); 2 vertical setae; 2 mesoclinate postorbital setae; postocellar setae parallel; 1 strong vibrissal seta; 2 supravibrissal setae, both of about the same size; 1 strong and 2 slightly smaller genal setae. Scutum microtomentose, covered with short, semiadpressed black setulae. Scutellum microtomentose. Pleurae subshining to microtomentose. Scutum with 1 long posterior and 1 small anterior dorsocentral seta. 1 postpronotal seta; 1 praesutural seta; 2 notopleural setae; 1 supraalar seta; 2 postalar setae; 1 praescutellar seta; 1 apical and 1 lateral scutellar seta. 1 seta at posterior margin of anepisternum. 1 dorsal seta and 1 ventral seta on katepisternum. Hind metatarsus ventrally with dense yellow golden setae. Length metatarsus 2: length tibia 2 = 0.6. Tergites with no obvious depressions or tufts of setulae. Abdominal pleura with scattered setae on abdominal segments 4���5. Abdominal segments 1���5 narrow, width of tergite 3: length of tergite 3 = 2.8. Tergites 2���5 each with 1 distinct lateral seta at the posterior margin, and tergite 5 with 4 setae at the posterior margin. Sternite 5 almost semicircular (Fig. 14). Sternite 5 with 1 large and some smaller lateral setae. Midventral tergite 7 not recognized. Protandrium small, about as long as epandrium and about 0.5 of length of tergite 5. In the holotype the protandrium is almost completely hidden by tergite 5. Epandrium with 1 outstanding lateral seta and several smaller setae (Fig. 11). Maximum length dorsally in the middle of epandrium: maximum width of epandrium = 0.7. Cerci distinctly projecting, and with a few setulae only. Subepandrial plate hardly sclerotised with the exception of a x-shaped brown structure. No setula recognized on subepandrial plate. No proceeding of hypoproct. No tooth on subepandrial plate. Surstylus as Figs. 11���12: elongated and slightly longer than epandrium, almost parallel sided, sclerotized basally and almost hyaline apically, tip rounded. Surstylus apically with several strong setae mixed with smaller setulae, basally with small setulae only. No lamella. Postgonite as in Fig. 13: distinctly sclerotised, with a slightly broadened base, slightly elongated, pointed, apically bent like a hook. Distiphallus longer than epandrium and surstylus, covered with short, broad setulae that form a dark surface over almost the complete distiphallus. Basiphallus not recognized. Diagnosis. At first glance Meoneura gnomi is recognised by the unique elongated surstylus (Figs. 11, 12) which is longer than epandrium, basally sclerotised and apically almost hyaline, and covered with dense setulae apically. Meoneura krivosheinae Ozerov, 1991 has a similar long surstylus that is sclerotised basally and hyaline apically. But the surstylus of M. krivosheinae species is constricted medially, about twice as long as epandrium, and has a sclerotised base with some obvious setae (cf. Ozerov 1991: 8, Fig. 5). The Nearctic Meoneura forcipata Sabrosky, 1959 has an elongated surstylus and no lamella, too, and resembles M. gnomi in this regard. But M. forcipata has a different shaped surstylus and is densely covered with short setulae apically (Sabrosky 1 959: 21, Fig. 8). Etymology. This term ���gnomi��� is derived from the noun ���gnom���. Gnoms are dwarf-like humanoids living underground. Gnoms are first introduced in the literature in the 16th century by Paracelsus (Philippus Aureolus Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim). As Carnidae belongs to the smallest Acalyptratae, gnoms are the smallest humanoids. Distribution. Meoneura gnomi is hitherto only known from the locus typicus Aman-Kutan (near Samarkand, Uzbekistan). Diagnosis. Occiput indistinctly brownish yellow on upper part; antenna with scape and pedicel brownish yellow; mesoscutum with narrow brownish median vitta, anterior spiracle yellow, 1 postsutural supra-alar seta; abdomen entirely yellow, hypandrium with numerous thin setae apically. Description. Male (Fig. 5). Body 5.2 mm, wing 6.0��� 6.2 mm. Head extensively yellow, greyish pollinose, with black setation; ocellar tubercle brownish, occiput rather indistinctly broadly brownish yellow on upper part behind ocellar tubercle. Ocellar setae missing. Occiput with transverse row of longer setae above neck, 2 pairs of similar setae behind ocellar tubercle laterally and numerous short setae on upper part medially, postoculars minute. Antenna with scape and pedicel brownish yellow, postpedicel and stylus black; scape elongate, about 4 x longer than wide; postpedicel 5���5.5 x longer that wide near base; stylus one third as long as postpedicel. Proboscis with labrum yellow (except brownish tip), 2 x head height; palpus yellow, whitish pubescent, with several dark setulae. Thorax almost entirely yellow, only mesoscutum with median narrow brownish vitta occupying about 1/3 of space between rows of dorsocentrals and disappearing before prescutellar depression; with black setation. Prosternum bare. Proepisternum with several dark minute setulae. Antepronotum bilobed, with 8���10 setae of different lengths on each side. Postpronotal lobe with 1 long and several short setae. Mesonotum with 1 presutural intra-alar, 1 presutural supra-alar, 1 long and 1���2 short notopleurals, 1 postsutural supra-alar, 1 postalar, 2 scutellars; additionally, notopleuron with several setulae anteriorly; acrostichals present or absent; dorsocentrals more or less uniserial. Laterotergite with 6���7 setae of different lengths. Anterior and posterior spiracles yellow. Legs long, slender, almost entirely yellow, only tarsomeres 5 brown; with black setation. Fore femur bare ventrally; fore tibia with 3 dorsal setae (as long or slightly shorter than tibia diameter). Mid and hind femora covered with dense setulae ventrally, hind femur slender throughout; mid and hind tibiae without prominent setae (except circlet of short subapicals), 1 short but distinct seta in comb at tip of hind tibia. All tarsomeres unmodified, covered with simple setulae (except circlet of somewhat longer subapicals). Wing membrane hyaline; veins somewhat yellowish at base, otherwise brownish, complete (except Sc), well sclerotised. Stigma indistinct, brownish yellow to yellow. Anal lobe slightly obtuse. Calypter yellow, black fringed. Halter yellow. Abdomen entirely yellow, covered with short, thin, black setae more distinct on tergites 1���3; tergites subshiny, sternites denser greyish pollinose. Segment 8 with tergite and sternite almost entirely fused. Terminalia (Fig. 6) almost entirely yellow, only cercus narrowly brownish along upper margin, with black setation; cercus with very short anterodorsal projection, bearing subequally short marginal setae; epandrial lamella rather subrectangular (lateral view), with lower posterior corner strongly prolonged downwards; hypandrium elongate, with rounded apex, covered with numerous thin setae apically; phallus somewhat broadened on middle portion, slightly curved subapically, with short, truncate apex. Female. Body 6.4���6.7 mm, wing 6.7���7.0 mm. Very similar to male, acrostichals absent. Abdomen with last segment and cercus brown. One female paratype with narrower dark stripe on mesoscutum than in other specimens. Etymology. The name of the new species refers to the name of the province Adana of Turkey, where it was collected. Differential diagnosis. The new species belongs to a small complex of Xanthempis species that have the hypandrium of the male terminalia elongated and covered with numerous setae. This group includes: E. aequalis Loew; E. laeta Loew and E. hypandrialis Daugeron (Daugeron 2000). However, E. adanaensis sp. nov. can be readily distinguished from all these species primarily by a narrow mesoscutal vitta, presence of a postsutural supraalar seta and entirely yellow abdomen. In E. aequalis, E. laeta and E. hypandrialis, the mesoscutal vitta occupies the entire space between rows of dorsocentral setae, the postsutural supra-alar seta is absent and the abdominal tergites are brown dorsally. Male: hind femur only slightly thickened, hind tibia slender throughout; abdomen densely light grey pollinose. Female: hind femur distinctly thickened, hind tibia thickened on basal part; abdominal tergites densely silvery white pollinose. Description. Male (Fig. 1). Body length 4.3���5.6 mm; wing length 6.1���6.9 mm. Head black. Eyes dichoptic, ommatidia of equal size. Frons narrow above, broadened below, in narrowest part about twice as broad as anterior ocellus; with scattered minute marginal setulae, entirely densely light grey pollinose. Face wide, almost parallelsided, concolourous with frons, bare; clypeus subshiny. Occiput and ocellar tubercle concolourous with frons; occiput covered with numerous, moderately long, black thin setae; ocellar tubercle with 2 similar setae and several setulae. Antenna with scape rather brownish, pedicel reddish brown (paler on extreme apex), postpedicel largely reddish yellow (brownish on narrowed apical part), stylus dark brown; scape about 2 x longer than pedicel, both with short black setulae; postpedicel short, nearly 2 x longer than wide, deeply concave on subapical part ventrally; stylus about half as long as postpedicel. Proboscis long, labrum nearly 2 x as long as head height; palpus short, yellow, with scattered black setulae. Wing membrane hyaline; veins brown (except yellowish brown near extreme base of wing). Pterostigma faint, yellowish, narrow. Basal costal seta long, black. Veins R 5 and M 1 strongly divergent on subapical part; radial fork acute. Anal angle very acute, subsequently anal lobe well developed. Calypter pale yellow, pale fringed. Halter yellow. Abdomen black, densely light grey pollinose, with only black setation; tergites covered with rather sparse thin setae, longer on tergites 1���2 laterally, bearing long posteromarginal setae. Terminalia (Figs 3, 4) small; epandrial lamella and cercus contrastingly dark brown; epandrial lamella rather rhomboid, with lower posterior angle more acute and somewhat produced downwards; faintly tomentose, with black setation, longer setae on lower part; cercus small, clothed in dark setulae; phallus partly exposed, brownish yellow, thin, evenly curved; hypandrium non-visible in situ, reduced to two lateral arms. Female (Fig. 2). Body length 5.8���6.7 mm; wing length 6.3���6.6 mm. Similar to male except as follows: Frons broad, parallel-sided. Occipital setae somewhat sparser and stronger. All femora brownish dorsally on basal part; fore tibia with rows of short anterodorsal and posterodorsal setae, also bearing row of several short posteroventral setae, fore basitarsus with several spine-like setae ventrally, fore tarsomere 5 shorter than tarsomeres 3 and 4 combined; mid femur with sparse anteroventral and posteroventral setae, setae minute on subapical part and longer towards base; mid tibia with more numerous and stronger setae arranged in almost regular double dorsal and ventral rows; mid basitarsus with several spine-like setae ventrally; mid tarsomere 5 shorter than tarsomeres 3 and 4 combined; hind femur thickened on about middle, bare ventrally, only with row of short, sparse spine-like anteroventral setae on about apical 2/3; hind tibia thickened on basal part, with ventral pubescence only on middle part, bearing 3���4 very short anterodorsal setae (1���2 near apex and 2 near base), 4���5 longer posterodorsal setae spread more or less regularly, 2���3 short anteroventral setae near apex and 3���4 very short anteroventral setae near base (number variable, sometimes even on right and left legs); hind basitarsus with several spine-like setae ventrally; claws of all legs of equal lengths. Abdominal tergites 2���6 densely silvery white pollinose, tergite 1 entirely, tergite 7 posteriorly, sternites 1���6 entirely and sternite 7 posteriorly densely light grey pollinose; segment 8 contrastingly dark brown, shiny, except tergite 8 faintly greyish pollinose posteriorly. Abdominal tergite 1 with some moderately long setae, otherwise abdomen covered with scattered minute black setulae; cercus concolourous with segment 8, short, covered with black setulae. Etymology. The new species is named in honour of the collector of the holotype, Russian dipterist Nikita Vikhrev (Moscow), who kindly provided his very interesting specimens used in this study. Differential diagnosis. Empis vikhrevi sp. nov. is similar to E. tumida Meigen and its allies (Shamshev 2018). The new species differs from all species of Pachymeria by extensively reddish yellow postpedicel of the antenna in both sexes. Like some other species of Pachymeria, females of E. vikhrevi sp. nov. can be even more readily distinguished by an unique combination (besides reddish yellow postpedicel) of the hind femur thickened near mid-length, the hind tibia thickened on basal part, and the densely silvery white pollinosity on abdominal tergites 2���6. The new species could be E. ruficornis (Loew), which is an unrecognised species of either Pachymeria, or Polyblepharis Bezzi possessing red antennae (see discussion in Chv��la 1999: 197). Loew described this species in Pachymeria from south-eastern Europe (��� Bessarabia ���). However, he (Loew 1864: 366) notes that in E. ruficornis the abdomen is rather shiny black, the laterotergite bears black and pale yellow setae, the wing veins are yellowish and the body is about 11 mm. Distribution. Palaearctic: Bulgaria, Turkey (Fig. 7). Habitat and seasonal occurrence. According to the label data, the new species occurs in mountainous areas (1300���1480 m), like several other species of Pachymeria; dates of collecting refer to the second half of June. Remarks. Empis (Xanthempis) testiculata Bezzi Empis testiculata Bezzi, 1909: 92. Type locality: Crete (Greece). Empis (Xanthempis) testiculata Bezzi: Daugeron 2000: 385, fig. 16 (holotype re-description, male genitalia). Material examined. ISRAEL: Park Rosh ha��Ayin, 16.iv.1993, A. Freidberg & F. Kaplan (1 ♂, TAUI). TURKEY: Kızılyaka, on flowers, 105 m, 37��01��21����N 28��26��18����E, 27.iv.���4.v.2016, Bart��k & Kub��k (1 ♂, ZIN; 9 ♂, 1 ♀, CULSP). Female (described for the first time). Very similar to male only paler: head yellow, grey colour restricted to dorsal part of frons and occiput (except posterior part); thorax mostly yellow to reddish yellow except broad brown stripe between rows of dorsocentrals (these lay on yellow background except posterior pairs) extending posteriorly over whole of presutural area, brown parts include scutellum and mediotergite and diffuse brownish spots occur laterally between pre-alar and supra-alar areas; pleura with indistinct brownish markings on katepisternum and meron. Abdomen yellow, tergites with median diffuse darkening and lateral brown stripes apparent best on tergites 2���5, last segment and cerci black. Variability. There are several differences between the holotype re-description and our specimens from Turkey. They may be caused by variability or poor condition of the holotype. Several characters are described here for the first time: head in most specimens yellow, only the occiput (except sometimes posterior part) grey, frons more or less grey (variable), most notably in dorsal half; scape, pedicel and basal half of postpedicel yellow to reddish yellow, more distal parts of antennae including stylus black; ratio of antennal segments (in 0.01 mm scale) = 9: 7: 35: 16; ocellar setae black, about 0.20 mm long; palpus yellow but darkened apically; all parts of prothorax yellow including adjacent areas of notopleuron and mesoscutum, under rows of dorsocentrals more or less apparent narrow yellowish stripe; mesopleuron with dorsal parts of the katepisternum and meron with diffuse yellowish spots, otherwise thorax brownish grey and rather light grey tomentose; antepronotum shallowly bilobate; both fore and hind tibiae mostly with 2���3 larger setae; abdomen including genitalia and venter yellow, tergites with more or less apparent brownish grey diffuse spots medially and with more pronounced brown stripes laterally. Distribution. Palaearctic: Greece (Crete), Israel, Turkey (Fig. 7). Remarks. Empis testiculata was known until now after a holotype male taken from Crete. The species is recorded here from Israel and Turkey for the first time. Also, the Empis subgenus Xanthempis is recorded from Israel for the first time. Remarks. The species has been known from temperate and southern parts of Western Europe. Platypalpus granadensis Chv��la, 1972 Material examined. Muğla prov.: 2♂, 6♀, Muğla University campus, MT, 720 m, 37��09���42������N, 28��22���13������E, H. Kavak, iv.2015 (CULSP). Remarks. This species was previously known from the female holotype from Spain (Chv��la 1981). Our female specimens agree exactly with the original description except the mid femur bears anterior (or slightly anterodorsal) setae, of which at least 1���2 but usually 3���4 are dark at least on apical half of the femur and also strong and dark anteroventral setae are on the apical half of the femur. In original description and illustration (Chv��la 1981: 147, fig. a) these setae are not mentioned; however, B. Sinclair (Ottawa) kindly examined the female holotype and found anteroventral setae to be present, but not as strong as in our specimen (he compared the holotype with photo of our specimen). Also the anterior setae are present, but they ���appear to be slender and long, not readily distinguished from finer setae��� (B. Sinclair pers. comm. 2017). The postpedicel in our specimens is 1.95X longer than the stylus (mean, standard deviation = 0.22) exactly the same value as obtained by measuring Chv��la ���s fig. b. However, direct measuring of holotype showed this ratio to be 1.66 (B. Sinclair, pers. comm. 2017). Genitalia are very similar to those of P. longicornis (compare Chv��la 1975, figs 329���331), only left epandrial lamella is slightly concave ventrally and both cerci are more rounded apically). Platypalpus granadensis is undoubtedly closely related to P. longicornis, as already stated by Chv��la (1981). Besides differences given in this paper, the mid tibial spur is distinct, rather long and flat in P. granadensis (also apparent from Chv��la 1981, fig. a) which disagrees with the statement: ���No apical spur on mid tibia��� in original description; however, it is almost absent in P. longicornis. This species is known only from the type locality in Spain. Platypalpus moceki sp. nov. (Figs 19���22, 32) Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂, labelled: ���TURCIA MER., 10 km E Mut, Bogcagiz 800 m, pine f. [= forest] + pasture, B. Mocek 1.5.1996 ��� (CULSP). PARATYPES: 6♂, 7♀, same data as holotype (CULSP and MHK); 1♀, Turcia mer, 10 km N Silifke, Yenibahce 600 m, mixed forest B. Mocek, 1.v.1996 (CULSP). Diagnosis. Yellow species of the P. pallidiventris���cursitans group with 2 pairs of vertical setae; thorax microtrichose except lustrous spot on katepisternum in male, central part of mesoscutum lustrous in female; mid tibial spur blunt in both sexes (in male with saddle-like apex armed with spine-like seta); long sparse pale posteroventral setae on mid femur. Description. Male. Head black with lower part of frons, face, gena and clypeus more or less (variable) yellowish to yellow, very light (almost silvery) grey microtrichose, all setae whitish yellow. Frons about 0.07 mm broad on lower part (about as broad as pedicel but slightly collapsed in all specimens), slightly widening dorsally. Face broader than frons (about 0.10 mm broad at middle), distinctly keel-like protruding. Gena broad, microtrichose. Antenna (Fig. 19) with both basal segments yellow, postpedicel yellow basally and darkened in apical half to fifth (variable), stylus brown; postpedicel 2.8���3.3X longer than broad, stylus about as long as postpedicel. Clypeus microtrichose. Palpus broadly ovate and distinctly tipped, pale yellow, about 3/4 as long as proboscis, with 1���2 subterminal white seta(e). Ocellar setae whitish yellow and long (about 0.18 mm), posterior pair half as long. Two pairs of pale vertical setae, outer pair lateroclinate and about as long as ocellars, inner pair inclinate and slightly longer, inserted 0.15 mm apart. Occiput whitish yellow setose, setae shorter on dorsal half and longer on ventral part. Proboscis blackish brown, half as long as head height or slightly less. Thorax entirely yellow, microtrichose (only narrow stripe below acrostichals devoid of microtrichia), katepisternum narrowly lustrous, leaving microtrichose stripes on both anterior and posterior parts. All setae whitish yellow. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta long and strong accompanied with several short setulae; acrostichals nearly regularly narrowly biserial and slightly diverging, about 0.07 mm long, about 10 setae in one row; dorsocentrals equally long and irregularly 2���3 serial, last pair long, prescutellar depression with setae; notopleuron usually with two setae on posterior part (lower one sometimes reduced) and several additional short setae; 1 long postalar and 1 pair of long scutellar setae (mostly with additional pair of small hairs laterally). Wing clear with pale veins. R4+5 and M1+2 slightly converging apically. Crossveins broadly separated. CuA2 slightly recurrent to almost perpendicular, almost straight and shortened. Costal seta moderately long, yellow. Squama pale yellow with yellow fringes. Halter pale yellow. Legs entirely yellow including coxae and last tarsomeres (only with small dark dots on trochanters and apically darkened midtibial spur). Most setae whitish yellow except ventral spines on mid femur and tibia, some larger setae darkened. Fore femur thickened; rows of antero- and posteroventral setae slightly shorter than half of femur depth. Fore tibia slightly spindle-like dilated, short setose, setae mixed yellow and brown. Mid femur about as deep as fore femur (but longer), with several long, pale posteroventral setae. Mid tibia with apical spur as long as tibia depth, rather saddle-like excavated apically, ending with spine-like seta. Hind legs thin, femur short setose ventrally. Abdomen yellow including genitalia (with exception of brown hypandrium). Tergite 2 nearly completely microtrichose on lateral parts, tergite 3 with basal half microtrichose laterally and tergite 4 with basal third microtrichose, remaining parts including venter and epandrial lamellae lustrous. All abdominal setae pale and moderately long. Genitalia (Figs 20���22): left epandial lamella (Fig. 22) elongate, short setose dorsally and apically, with very long ventral outgrowth only narrowly connected with lamella bearing more than 30 long setae (about 0.20 mm long but appearing shorter on figure illustrated from standardized plane); cerci digitiform and short (Fig. 21), right epandrial lamella (Fig. 20) broadly ovate, with ovate surstylus bearing small setae ventrally. Female. Similar to male except as follows: central disc of mesoscutum lustrous leaving postpronotum, narrow stripe along postpronotum, notopleuron, scutellum and narrow stripe on lateral parts microtrichose; midtibial spur of different shape: rounded, in lateral view with flat ventral part and more convex dorsal side (without sadle-like excavation); abdominal tergites more lustrous (only tergites 1���2 and last three tergites and last sternite microtrichose and darkened); postpedicel in most specimens darker, yellow only on basal part. Length: body 2.4���3.0 mm, wing 2.4��� 3.4 mm. Etymology. The species epithet, moceki, is a Latin genitive patronym to honor Dr. Bohuslav Mocek (Hradec Kr��lov��), the collector of type series. Distribution. Turkey, Mersin province. Remarks. The species described above is most allied to the recently described species, P. amankutanensis Bart��k & Shamshev, 2015. The latter species has a sharp midtibial spur in both sexes and quite different male genitalia (lateral lamella without setose outgrowth). Moreover, sexual dimorphism in microtrichosity of mesoscutum is rare feature in the genus Platypalpus. The species described above may be only with difficulties arranged into the key by Grootaert & Chv��la (1992) due to controversies in couplet 18 (the species does not run to couplet 19 nor to 21). This species was previously known only from Austria and Czech and Slovak Republics. Specimens from Turkey (T) differ slightly from central European mountain populations (CE) in having legs entirely dark yellow (with brownish to brownish black markings of various extent on femora in CE). Additionally, the shape of the cerci slightly differs, the T specimen has no interapical tooth on both cerci and the female abdomen is almost entirely microtrichose (with broad lustrous median triangles on tergites 2���6 in CE). Other characters including all details of genitalia are identical (including basal sclerotization of left epandrial lamella and asymmetrical tergite 8). Setae around left epandrial lamella are longer than depicted by Chv��la (1989, fig. 42, in both T and CE). Platypalpus anomalus sp. nov. (Figs 5���7, 28) Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂, labelled: ��� Turkey: 8 km S of ��ine, river bank, 68 m, 37��32���34������N, 28��03���46������E, 29.iv.���1.v.2016, Bart��k, Kub��k��� (CULSP). PARATYPES: 3♂, same data as holotype (CULSP). Diagnosis. Small black species of the P. pallidiventris - cursitans group with a single pair of inclinate vertical setae; antenna with basal segments reddish yellow and the rest black, stylus greatly thickened; mesoscutum rather sparsely microtrichose; mid tibial spur short, short pale posteroventral setae on mid femur. Description. Male. Head black, grey microtrichose. Frons about 0.05 mm broad and almost parallel-sided, widening slightly dorsally and 0.06 mm broad at level of anterior ocellus. Face 0.03 mm broad at middle. Gena very narrow and lustrous. Antenna with both basal segments reddish yellow, postpedicel and stylus black, postpedicel only slightly broader than basal part of stylus, 2.6���2.7X longer than wide, stylus greatly thickened (as in P. farabiensis ���see Shamshev 1998, fig. 7) and 1.4���1.5X longer than postpedicel. Clypeus microtrichose on anterior (dorsal) half and lustrous below (posteriorly). Palpus brown, ovate, half as long as labrum, with 2 long subterminal brownish yellow setae. Ocellar setae pale, about 0.09 mm long, second pair very short. Single pair of inclinate short vertical setae as long as ocellar, inserted wide apart (0.17 mm). Occiput short and sparsely brownish yellow setose dorsally and short paler setose ventrally. Proboscis black, half as long as head height. Thorax black, grey microtrichose, katepisternum narrowly lustrous, leaving microtrichose stripes both anteriorly and posteriorly. Mesoscutum sparsely covered with relatively long and adpressed microtrichia causing somewhat subshiny appearance, pleura more densely microtrichose. All thoracic setae pale, brownish yellow to yellow. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta long, additional setae very short; acrostichals narrowly biserial and diverging, short (0.06 mm), only about 5���6 setae in one row; dorsocentrals uniserial, evenly short and sparse anteriorly, posteriorly 1���2 longer pairs; notopleuron with 1���2 setae on posterior part, otherwise with only a few short setulae; 1 postalar and 1 pair of scutellar setae (with additional pair of small setulae laterally). Wing clear with yellowish veins, R4+5 and M1+ 2 in apical third almost parallel. Crossveins very broadly separated (on distance about 3��� 4X longer than length of r-m crossvein (rather narrow second basal cell much longer than first basal cell), vein CuA1 vanishing before wing margin. CuA2 slightly recurrent and slightly C-shaped, anal vein indistinct in basal part. Costal seta brownish yellow, short. Squama whitish with yellow fringes. Halter whitish. Legs yellow including tarsi. Coxae yellow with yellow setae. Fore femur distinctly thickened in basal third, ventral setae short. Fore tibia slightly spindle-shaped dilated, with brownish setulae dorsally and anteriorly. Mid femur distinctly narrower than fore femur, with 6���8 short pale posteroventral setae, anteroventrally with several pale setae somewhat longer than those forming two rows of dark ventral spines. Mid tibia with short blunt-tipped apical spur and usual row of black spines ventrally. Hind legs thin, without conspicuous setae. Abdomen brown, lustrous except finely microtrichose sides of tergites 1���3. All abdominal setae pale (brown on genital lamellae) and short (except long marginal setae on last sternite). Genitalia (Figs 5���7): left epandrial lamella (Fig. 7) with long setae in dorsoapical part; cerci (Fig. 6) short and rather broad; right epandrial lamella (Fig. 5) with short surstylus. Female. Unknown. Length: body 2.0��� 2.3 mm, wing 1.7���2.0 mm. Etymology. The species name is derived from ��� anomalus ��� (= anomalos, Greek adjective meaning anomalous, irregular) referring to several anomalous features of this species (shortened vein CuA1, greatly thickened stylus). Distribution. Turkey, Aydın province. Remarks. The species described above is closely allied to the Central Asian species, P. farabiensis Shamshev, 1998, and P. tumidiarista Bart��k & Shamshev, 2015. With darkened palpi, shape of left epandrial lamella, and narrower mid femur it is closer to the latter. From both species it differs in the structure of male genitalia (left epandrial lamella bears very long, dark posteriorly oriented setae in dorsal excision, broad apical projection, and much longer setae ventrally). Moreover, the lustrous spot on the katepisternum is broader than in both species with which it is compared (broader than posterior microtrichose stripe), vein CuA1, ending far before the wing margin (distance longer than lower crossvein), and clypeus is lustrous on ventral half. Our specimens agree with the original description in all details, except the male abdominal pattern could not be compared because it was not described: our specimens have a lustrous abdomen with all tergites broadly microtrichose on sides (more broadly than in P. pulicarius (Meigen, 1830)) and also sternites 6 to 7 microtrichose (sternite 8 lustrous to sublustrous���the same as in P. pulicarius). The male genitalia are almost identical with the original description, only the right cercus is slightly more broadened apically (about as depicted in P. pulicarius by Chv��la 1975, fig. 360) and right surstylus is long and narrow, straight, with small broadening about its base. Platypalpus seticauda sp. nov. (Figs 23���26, 33) Type material. Small black species of the P. minutus group with 1 pair of vertical setae; mesoscutum lustrous except narrow lateral margins, pleura microtrichose except largely lustrous katepisternum, anepisternum with small lustrous spot and meron subshiny; mid tibial spur short and blunt in both sexes; long sparse pale posteroventral setae on mid femur. Description. Male. Head black, rather light grey microtrichose, all setae yellow. Frons about 0.06 mm broad on lower part (slightly wider than pedicel) slightly widening dorsally (0.08 mm broad at level of front ocellus). Face narrower than frons (about 0.04 mm broad at middle but distinctly widening ventrally. Gena medium wide, lustrous. Antenna (Fig. 23) black including stylus; postpedicel small and rather broad basally, 1.5���1.8X longer than broad, stylus 2.6���2.7X longer than postpedicel. Clypeus lustrous. Palpus yellow, broadly ovate, half as long as proboscis, with 3���4 white setae. Ocellar setae yellow and short (about 0.08 mm), posterior setulae very short. Single inclinate pair of pale vertical setae equally small as ocellars and inserted conspicuously wide apart (0.18 mm). Occiput short yellow setose dorsally and somewhat longer setose ventrally. Proboscis blackish brown, slightly less than half as long as head height. Thorax black, mesoscutum lustrous (from antepronotum to margin of scutellum), microtrichose parts: postpronotum, notopleuron, postalar calli and scutellum; pleura microtrichose except following parts: katepisternum broadly lustrous (almost up to hind margin), anepisternum with small lustrous spot in middle and meron broadly sublustrous (similarly as in P. albifacies (Collin, 1926)). All setae yellow. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta long and strong, accompanied with several short setulae; acrostichals biserial and short (0.04 mm) and few in numbers (4���5 pairs); dorsocentrals only slightly longer, uniserial, 5���6 in a row ending in single long seta; notopleuron with single long seta inserted in microtrichose part and several additional small setae; 1 postalar and 1 pair of scutellar setae (with additional pair of small setulae laterally). Wing clear with yellow to slightly brownish yellow veins. R4+5 and M1+2 parallel in apical half. Crossveins narrowly separated. CuA2 almost perpendicular, almost straight, basal part of anal vein indistinct. Costal seta moderately long, yellow. Squama yellow with yellow fringes. Halter whitish yellow. Legs entirely yellow including all coxae (except small dark dots on trochanters), last tarsal joints slightly darkened. Nearly all setae on femora and tibiae yellow (except ventral spines on mid femur and tibia). Fore femur thickened, sparse rows of antero- and posteroventral setae about half of femur depth, several strong but short preapicals. Fore tibia spindle-like dilated, short setose, with several short and fine dark setae dorsally. Mid femur approximately equally deep as fore femur, with several long pale posteroventral setae, anterior of two ventral rows of spines consists of very short setae, nearly as short as their warts. Mid tibia with apical spur shorter than tibia depth, yellow and flattened, appearing sharp in lateral view but broadly rounded in ventral view. Basal part of hind femur curved (bowed dorsolaterally), short setose. Hind tibia thin and short setose. Abdomen brownish black, lustrous, with only sides of first two tergites microtrichose. All abdominal setae pale (except brown large setae on right epandrial lamella) and short (except several longer setae laterally on last abdominal segments). Genitalia (Figs 24���26) very distinctive: left epandrial lamella (Fig. 26) shallowly excised apically, bearing very long setae on small tubercule, setae arched, but if stretched, would be up to 0.30 mm long; cerci (Fig. 25) short and digitiform, right cercus apically broad with short, inner apical lobe and left cercus slightly arched medially; right epandrial lamella (Fig. 24) broadly ovate, with short simple surstylus. Female. Very similar to male, basal abdominal tergites more lustrous (with only slight indication of microtrichosity) and last two segments microtrichose. Length: body 1.9���2.0 mm (female up to 2.3 mm due to somewhat stretched abdomen), wing 2.0��� 2.3 mm. Etymology. The species name reflects extremely long setae on left epandrial lamella. Distribution. Turkey, Aydın province. Remarks. The species described above may be easily recognized by the extremely long ventral setae on the left epandrial lamella. It is similar to P. zernyi Chv��la, 1975, described from South Spain. Besides many small differences in colour of tarsi (P. zernyi has annulated tarsi with last two segments entirely dark), length of vertical setae (long in P. zernyi), number of notopleural setae (two in P. zernyi), length of stylus (2.3X longer than postpedicel in P. zernyi), the most obvious differences are in microtrichosity pattern on pleura (lustrous in P. zernyi) and ventral setosity of left epandrial lamella (with much shorter setae in P. zernyi). The above described species should be also compared with P. javieri Grootaert, 1995, however, this species has, beside other differences, pointed midtibial spur. Two pairs of long black vertical setae (outer lateroclinate pair as long as ocellars, inner inclinate pair even longer), inner pair inserted wide apart (0.22 mm). Occiput short black setose dorsally and longer whitish setose ventrally. Proboscis black, slightly more than half as long as head height. Compound eye distinctly kidney-shaped incised posteriorly. Thorax black, entirely grey microtrichose, katepisternum broadly lustrous, leaving narrow microtrichose stripe on posterior part and in posterodosal corner. All setae black to brown, only several very small setulae on notopleuron pale. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta long accompanied with two rather long setae and several very short hairs; acrostichals irregularly 6-serial on broad median stripe, short (about 0.06 mm), more than 15 setae in one row; dorsocentrals evenly short, irregularly arranged, nearly uniserial, but with several setae scattered laterad, last two pairs strong and long; notopleuron with 2 long setae on posterior part, otherwise only sparsely setulose; 1 postalar and 1 pair of long scutellar setae (with additional pair of small hairs laterally). Wing clear with brown veins, R4+5 and M1+ 2 in apical third almost parallel. Crossveins very narrowly separated. CuA2 recurrent and slightly S-shaped, anal vein depigmented but distinct along entire length. Costal seta brown, costal swelling near tip of R1 dark. Squama pale yellow with darker margin and long white fringes. Halter whitish yellow. Legs brown, distal parts of fore and mid femora brownish yellow, fore and mid tibiae and all basitarsi brownish yellow. Distal parts of tarsi darkened but not distinctly annulated. Coxae brown. Legs with most setae and setulae pale but also with irregularly arranged dark setae. Fore femur not much thickened, ventral setae slightly shorter than femur depth. Fore tibia narrow, short setose. Mid femur slightly swollen (only slightly deeper than fore femur), without posteroventral setae but spine-like setae in ventral rows rather long. Mid tibia with very short blunt-tipped apical spur. Hind legs thin, femur short setose ventrally. Abdomen black, entirely rather light grey microtrichose except lustrous genital lamellae. All abdominal setae pale and short except longer marginal setae on last three segments. Genitalia small (not dissected in only male (holotype)) with left epandrial lamella (Fig. 13) simple narrowly oblong, with rounded tip and row of several short setae ventrally, cerci simple and digitiform (Fig. 14), short, left one narrower and longer than right one. Female. Similar to male except darker legs: parts brown in male are nearly black and parts brownish yellow in male rather yellowish brown. Length: body 3.3 mm (male holotype), female up to 4 mm (due to exposed abdomen), wing 3.6���4.0 mm. Etymology. The species name is derived from very short postpedicel (diminutus, Latin, meaning reduced). Distribution. Turkey, Muğla province. Remarks. The species described above can be easily recognized according to the very short postpedicel and entirely microtrichose abdomen in both sexes. It somewhat resembles P. agnitus Collin, 1960, described and up to now known only from Israel, but this species has biserial acrostichals, much shorter stylus (about twice as long as postpedicel) and 4���5 notopleurals. Very small black species of the P. hackmani group with 2 pairs of vertical setae (inner inclinate, outer lateroclinate); antenna with basal two segments yellow, postpedicel black; thorax entirely microtrichose including katepisternum, large setae dark; legs yellow with segments 2���4 of fore tarsi contrastingly black in male, mid femur with distinct ventral spines, midtibial spur absent, lacking posteroventral setae on mid femur; abdomen microtrichose; left epandrial lamella triangular. Description. Male. Head black, face and genae yellow, grey microtrichose. Frons about 0.07 mm broad ventrally (wider than pedicel) and widening dorsally (about 0.12 mm broad on upper part at level of anterior ocellus). Face about 0.06 mm broad at middle, almost parallel-sided. Gena broad and microtrichose. Antenna (Fig. 15) with basal segments yellow, postpedicel and stylus black; postpedicel broadly ovate, 2.3X longer than broad, stylus subequally long. Clypeus microtrichose. Palpus yellow, narrowly ovate, less than half as long as labrum, with 1 yellow dorsal seta and several very small additional setae. Ocellar setae dark brown, about 0.15 mm long, ocellar tubercule with two pairs of minute additional setulae. Two pairs of long black vertical setae (outer lateroclinate pair as long as ocellars, inner pair even longer), inner pair inserted wide apart (0.19 mm). Occiput sparsely and rather long setose, dorsal setae brownish yellow, ventral setae white and comparatively short. Proboscis black, half as long as head height. Thorax black, entirely grey microtrichose including katepisternum. Large setae black to brown and strikingly long, small setae brownish yellow, proepisternal seta yellow. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta very long and inserted posteriorly, two additional setae shorter and other short pale setae inserted on anterior part of postpronotum; acrostichals biserial (about 7 setae in a row), 0.07 mm long; dorsocentrals irregularly uniserial, first 2���3 pairs short, last 3���4 pairs long (anterior one situated anterior to middle of mesoscutum); posthumeral seta present and long, notopleuron with two long setae and 2���4 additional smaller setae; 1 short supraalar; 1 postalar and 1 pair of long scutellar setae (with additional pair of smaller setae laterally). Wing clear with yellow veins, R4+5 and M1+2 evenly slightly diverging, vein R4+5 slightly bowed towards C apically. Crossveins narrowly separated. CuA2 nearly perpendicular and slightly bowed, anal vein depigmented and indistinct in basal portion. Costal seta brown and very long, also second costal seta strong in male paratype. Squama pale yellow with pale fringes. Halter whitish yellow. Legs clear yellow, segments 2���4 of fore tarsus contrastingly black (except basalmost parts), mid and hind tarsi yellow with slightly darkened tips of last 3���4 segments (not contrastingly and no annulations). Coxae with yellow setae, those on fore coxa very long and strong. Fore femur thickened (1.4X broader than mid femur - measured at broadest points), covered with short pale setae except somewhat longer preapicals, anteroventrals short, posteroventrals about one-third as long as femur depth. Fore tibia slightly thickened, short and mostly pale setose, with 1���2 rather long dark anterodorsals. Mid femur much narrower than fore femur, with two long brown anterior setae on apical part, no posteroventral setae, ventrally with two rows of dark spine-like setae, those in posterior row up to 0.05 mm long on basal third becoming shorter and paler apically. Mid tibia narrower than fore tibia, with 1���2 black anterodorsal setae, ventrally with short black spine-like setae less distinct in proximal half, no apical spur. Hind femur relatively strong, short setose ventrally, with longer dark preapicals. Hind tibia with two rather long and black anterodorsal setae (submedian and preapical). Abdomen brown, rather sparsely grey microtrichose, tergites in some lights subshiny, genital lamellae lustrous. Abdominal setae mostly brownish yellow to brown and short. Genitalia (Figs 16���18) small, left epandrial lamella (Fig. 18) triangular-shaped apically, cerci (Fig. 17) short and simply digitiform, left cercus slightly broader than right one, right epandrial lamella (Fig. 16) oval, surstylus with distinct small setae. Female. Similar to male, except as follows: face darker, yellowish parts confined to middle of gena; fore femur with yellowish brown ring occupying middle half of femur, mid and hind femora only slightly shadowed middorsally; tarsal joints (except basitarsi) of all legs darkened apically, least two segments almost entirely brownish yellow to yellowish brown. Length: body 1.9 mm (male), 2.0��� 2.1 mm (female), wing 1.8���2.0 mm. Etymology. The species epithet, dursuni, is a Latin genitive patronym to honor Oktay Dursun for his help during our expeditions. Specimens from Turkey slightly differ from the original description of P. riojaensis in smaller size (wing length 2.2 mm), left epandrial lamella without dorsal outgrowth and right surstylus broadly ovate. However, in CULSP collection there are other specimens of probably the same species (from Cyprus) also without dorsal outgrowth on left epandrial lamella but slightly larger (wing length 2.5 mm) and with elongate right surstylus, one of them with all femora brownish yellow. Spine-like ventral setae on hind femora (mentioned in original description of P. riojaensis) are present in some specimens, but absent in other ones (without correlations with characters of genitalia). Therefore, we consider all specimens conspecific and characters are variable. Specimens are very similar to H. culiciformis; however, they have larger postpedicel, dark scutellars, shorter ventral preapical seta on mid tibia and larger microtrichose areas of the abdomen. The most important difference is in male genitalia: hypandrium extends posteriorly in a cone-shaped projection. We hesitate to describe this species herewith as new because Shamshev et al. (2015) reported great variations in male genitalia and other characters in H. culicifomis. However, we have seen no intermediate specimens and in CULSP collections are also specimens from Greece and Croatia. PARATYPES: same data as holotype (2 ♀) (MSNV). Notes on type material. The holotype is well preserved (only left hind leg missing) with genitalia in a plastic microvial. It is a specimen of P. flavicornis (Meigen). Genitalia agrees in all details with P. flavicornis including small subbasal incision on dorsal side of left epandrial lamella depicted by Chv��la (1975, figs 480���482) but omitted by Raffone (2010, fig. 5). Ventral setae on left epandrial lamella illustrated as very short by Raffone (l.c., fig. 6) are in fact very long (almost as in fig. 482 in Chv��la, 1975). However, Chv��la��s (l.c.) figures (figs 481 and 482) differ slightly from several specimens we studied: right cercus depicted as broad at base is in fact narrow (broader appearance is given by dorsally slightly bulging part of subepandrial sclerite). The first paratype female (erroneously labelled as male) is well preserved and it is a specimen of P. pallidicornis (Collin). The second female paratype is well preserved (with only left mid leg missing) and it is P. pallidicornis. Remarks. Characters of P. flavicornis beside those mentioned in several descriptions and specified here include: proepisternum with a single long pale downcurved seta; mid femur with pale anterior seta one third before tip (similar to P. pallidicornis). Width of frons (measured in middle) and distance between vertical setae are overlapping: the former character in P. pallidicornis being between 0.05���0.09 mm and 0.08���0.11 in P. flavicornis, the latter being between 0.14���0.18 mm in P. pallidicornis and 0.16���0.19 in P. flavicornis. In the holotype of P. litoreus, these measures are: 0.10 and 0.17 mm, respectively. Characters distinguishing both species are given in Table 2. Platypalpus litoreus is considered a new junior synonym of P. flavicornis. Characters of P. m a c u l a not previously correctly described and specified here include: face lustrous; gena narrow and lustrous; palpus with rather long setae also along its base; katepisternum lustrous up to extreme anterior and posterior margins; postpronotum without strong seta but often with 1���3 setae distinctly longer (but not stronger) than remaining ciliation. The only male at our disposal lost its head, scutellum bears an additional small subbasal seta (third pair) and legs are paler yellow with only last segments of hind tarsi darkened on apical 3���4 segments. Abdomen entirely lustrous including genital lamellae. Genitalia (Figs 10���12): left epandrial lamella (Fig. 12) ovoid, with several short setae both dorsally and ventrally and with small subbasal dorsal constriction (not visible in lateral view); right epandrial lamella (fig. 10) with rather square-shaped surstylus; cerci (Fig. 11) digitiform. Holotype was preserved in ethanol and during this study was dried and mounted on a card. It is well preserved (with left mid leg missing and some large setae broken). Paratype deposited in NRBF has postpedicels of both antennae missing as well as right mid and hind legs and broken large setae. Paratype deposited in MSNV is well preserved with only right foreleg missing. Both holotype and paratypes are specimens of P. exilis. Remarks. Characters of P. exilis beside those mentioned in several descriptions and specified here include: laterad from vertical setae is usually another part of similar (convergent) setae (when broken and the inclination of setae is not obvious, such specimens may erroneously lead in keys to P. aurantiacus Collin); face very narrow, in middle 5X narrower than width of frons on the level of front ocellus; clypeus narrow, long and lustrous; proboscis usually yellow or yellowish brown, darkened apically; front femur with several preapical anterior and anteroventral bristly-like setae; midtibial spur as long as or slightly longer than width of apical part of tibia; last tarsomere of all legs yellow in basal third to fourth and black to almost black in apical part; katepisternum lustrous up to hind margin; spine-like ventral setae on mid femur on posterior side about 2X longer than those on anterior row; crossveins contiguous or nearly so, basal part of anal vein distinct, CuP only slightly recurrent. Female abdomen almost whitish yellow with last segments including cerci usually darker, also male abdomen paler than thorax, with darker genitalia. Platypalpus ibericus sp. nov. (Figs 1���4) Type material. HOLOTYPE: ��, labelled: ��� PORTUGAL, 7 km E of Manteigas, nr. river, 580 m, sweeping, 40��24���42���N, 7��28���04���W, 23.v.2008, M. Bart��k ��� (CULSP). PARATYPES: 5 ��, 10 ♀, same data as holotype; 1 ♀, Portugal, 5 km N of Formalicao, Castanea wood, sweeping, 40��28���31���N, 7��21���32���W, 930 m, 23.v.2008, M. Bart��k (CULSP). Diagnosis. Brown and heavily microtrichose species with 1 pair of vertical setae; antennae with both basal segments yellow, postpediel short broad and black; acrostichals quadiserial; katepisternum with narrow vertical lustrous spot, legs yellow, mid tibia without apical spur. Description. Male. Head black, brownish grey microtrichose including clypeus. Frons �� 0.07 mm broad just above antennae and �� 0.10 mm broad in the level of front ocellus. Face �� 0.07 mm broad and nearly parallel sided. Gena narrow and lustrous. Antenna with basal segments yellow, postpedicel black, 1.4X longer than broad, stylus 2.5X longer than postpedicel. Palpus yellow, strip like with distinct tip, and long (about 2/3 as long as proboscis), with one strong but not very long subapical yellow to brownish yellow seta and with several additional shorter yellow setae. Ocellar setae brown and short (0.12 mm), posterior pair scarcely half as long. A single pair of brown to black vertical setae (�� 0.16 mm) inserted wide apart (�� 0.23 mm). Occiput brown to brownish yellow setose dorsally and yellow (but not much longer) setose ventrally. Proboscis half as long as head, brownish black. Thorax brown, rather light brownish grey microtrichose, katepisternum with narrow (= vertically oriented) lustrous spot. Large thoracic setae brownish, sometimes anterior ones (postpronotal, anterior notopleural, lateral scutellar) white, small setae pale brown (acrostichals, dorsocentrals) to white (lateral parts of mesoscutum). Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta (one specimen with two setae) rather long and mostly white; acrostichals broadly quadriserial and short (��� 0.06 mm in middle of rows), about 15 setae in one row; dorsocentrals equally short, irregularly biserial anteriorly (with several hairs laterally on mesoscutum) and nearly uniserial posteriorly, last two pairs strong and long; notopleuron with 2 long setae inserted wide apart; 1 long postalar and 1 long and one much shorter pair of scutellars. Wing clear, veins yellow in basal part and somewhat darker apically. Veins R4+5 and M1 only slightly bowed. Crossveins contiguous. Vein Cu distinctly S-shaped and recurrent, basal part of anal vein clearly visible. A single short yellow to brown costal seta. Squama grey with pale fringes. Halter yellow with brownish stem. Legs yellow with only usual small dark spots on all trochanters and mid and hind knees, mid and hind coxae very slightly darkened, last 1���2 (3) tarsal segments distinctly darkened, no annulations. Fore femur thickened, ventrally with short and fine pilosity, and with yellow setae dorsally and posteriorly slightly shorter than depth of femur. Fore tibia slightly thickened and short setose, with several short dark setae antero- and posterodorsally. Mid femur only very slightly deeper than fore femur (��� 0.21 mm broad at broadest point), ventrally with usual two rows of spine-like setae, anterior row consists of short spines and posterior consists of much longer setae proximally (up to 0.10 mm long) becoming shorter more distally, and with 2���3 preapical anterior and anteroventral and one preapical postroventral seta(e), no posteroventral setae. Mid tibia without apical spur. Hind legs without conspicuous setation. Abdomen brown, tergites 2���6 lustrous dorsally and with transverse band of microtrichosity anteriorly which may be broader on tergite 6, lateral margins microtrichose, segment 8 partly lustrous including proximal parts of genital lamellae, sternites and distal parts of genital lamellae microtrichose. Abdomen sparsely covered with white setae. Genitalia (Figs 1���4) with left epandrial lamella deeply split apically (Fig. 3); right epandrial lamella (Fig. 1) fine setose ventrally and with sharply tipped surstylus; cerci (Fig. 2) digitiform, left one with long ventrally bent apical process (Fig. 2 right). Female. Practically identical to male except usual differences in terminal abdominal segments. Segment 8 conspicuously enlarged. Length: body 2.1���3.8 mm, wing 2.0��� 2.9 mm. Etymology. The name is derived from the Iberian Peninsula where the species was collected. Distribution. Portugal. Remarks. The species described above is very similar to P. montenegrensis Bequaert, leading to the same point in the key by Grootaert & Chv��la (1992). The position of both species in groups delimited by Chv��la (1975) is unclear. Platypalpus montenegrensis was assigned by Grootaert & Chv��la (1992) close to the P. c i l i a r i s group, however, in keys to species groups (Chv��la 1975; Grootaert & Chv��la 1992) both species lead almost exactly to the P. hackmani group. Differences between both species are given in Table 1. Moreover, despite the thorax of the holotype of P. montenegrensis (studied by the senior author) being covered in glue masking the microtrichia, the katepisternum appears to be entirely microtrichose. A small black and lustrous species with 1 pair of vertical setae, antenna black, lustrous mesoscutum, katepisternum and anepisternum, legs black, mid femur with pale posteroventrals; very long and sharply pointed apical spur on mid tibia. Description. Male. Head black, frons (except microtrichose lowermost part), ocellar triangle and small triangular spot on vertex (behind ocellar triangle) lustrous, face microtrichose. Frons �� 0.06 mm broad just above antennae and ��� 0.10 mm broad in the level of front ocellus. Face ��� 0.04 mm broad at middle (at the narrowest point). Clypeus lustrous. Gena rather wide and lustrous. Antenna black, postpedicel 2.0���2.4X longer than broad, stylus 1.6���2.2X longer than postpedicel. Palpus brown, ovoid, and very short (about 1/3 as long as proboscis), with several long white to brownish setae. Ocellar setae black and short (��� 0.10 mm), posterior pair scarcely half as long. A single pair of brown to black vertical setae (��� 0.15 mm) inserted wide apart (��� 0.20 mm). Occiput light grey microtrichose, sparsely and black setose dorsally and long white setose ventrally. Proboscis half as long as head, brownish black. Thorax black; lustrous parts: mesoscutum including postpronotum, anepisternum (ventrally extending to fore coxa but except dorsal narrow microtrichose strip), katepisternum (lustrous part broadly connected with lustrous part of anepisternum, leaving only very narrow dorsal microtrichose strip); microtrichose parts: narrow ventral strip on notopleuron (ventrad from setae), postalar calli and scutellum. Large thoracic setae including acrostichals and dorsocentrals black or at least very dark brown, hairs on proepisternum, fore coxa and squama mostly white, hairs on wing mostly dark including small costal seta, legs with mixed dark and pale setae. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta rather short but distinct (about 2X longer than acrostichals or dorsocentrals); acrostichals broadly biserial and rather long (��� 0.10 mm in middle of rows), about 10���12 setae in one row; dorsocentrals equally long or slightly longer, uniserial, about 10 setae in one row, last pair strong and long (about as long as apical scutellars) and inserted conspicuously wide apart (near margins of scutellum); notopleuron with 1 long black seta on posterior part and with one to several additional smaller and paler seta(e); 1 short postalar and 2 to 3 pairs of scutellar setae. Wing clear with dark brown veins. Veins R4+5 and M1 only slightly bowed and almost parallel. Crossveins separated. Vein Cu almost straight and slightly recurrent, basal part of anal vein depigmented but visible. Costal seta short, black. Squama brown with pale fringes. Halter pale yellow except brownish basal part, stem dark brown. Legs black, only front knees and all tarsi at least partly brown. Tarsi with only very indistinct annulations. Fore femur slightly thickened, with two ventral rows of pale setae about half as long as depth of femur. Fore tibia narrow and short setose. Mid femur thickened (�� 0.23 mm broad at broadest point, i.e. 1.4X broader than fore femur), with rather short and sparse pale posteroventrals. Mid tibia with very long sharply pointed apical spur. Hind legs thin, without conspicuous setation. Abdomen black and entirely lustrous, without any microtrichosity, sparsely covered with setae appearing white on the lustrous black background but brown against white background, these setae are longer on last 3 tergites. Genitalia (Figs 5���8): left epandrial lamella (Fig. 8) slightly bowed, with about 10 setae ventrally (not all illustrated); cerci (Fig. 6) simple and digitiform, subequal; righ epandrial lamella (Fig. 5) subrectangular, surstylus ovoid with distinct longitudinal ridges (Fig. 7). Female. Practically identical with male except last abdominal segments. Abdomen lustrous, last two segments microtrichose except narrow lustrous stripe dorsally on 8th sternite. Length: body 2.7���3.0 mm, wing 2.5���2.9 mm. Etymology. The species is named after the type locality bearing local name ���Mo��tice���. Distribution. Czech Republic. Remarks. The species described above belongs to the P. minutus group and it should be compared with other black Platypalpus spp. with a single vertical seta, black antennae, black legs, long and sharp midtibial spur and lustrous anepisternum: P. a t e r (Wahlberg), P. niger (Meigen), and P. nigricolor Merz & Chv��la. However, the latter two species have proximal parts of all femora yellow and frons, ocellar triangle, and vertex microtrichose. Platypalpus ater, known from North Europe, sharing with P. mosticensis sp. nov. black legs and lustrous frons, has postpedicel shorter (about 1.5���1.9X longer than wide), stylus slightly longer (2��� 3X longer than postpedicel), large thoracic setae white and postpronotum including frontmost part of mesoscutum (between postpronotal calli) microtrichose. Moreover, genitalia of both species are different, compare Figs 5���8 with figs 386���388 in Chv��la (1975); e.g. the whole genitalia are very large and long in P. a t e r (being nearly as long as the whole abdomen), but short in P. mosticensis sp. nov. In addition, both right cercus and right surstylus are sharply tipped in P. a t e r, but rounded in P. mosticensis sp. nov. Female abdominal segment 8 is elongated in P. at e r (being at least 3X longer than preceding one) but subequally long in P. mosticensis sp. nov. The newly described species leads to couplet 69 in the key by Grootaert & Chv��la (1992), but also couplet 68 should be corrected because it erroneously states ���Pleura dusted except for polished katepisternum���. The couplets 68���69 should be corrected as follows: 68 (58) Legs mostly black, only tibia dark brown. Platypalpus canzonerii Raffone Platypalpus canzonerii Raffone, 2002a: 79. Type material examined. HOLOTYPE ��, labelled: ��� Morbegno (Sondrio), River Fiume Adda, 5.VIII.1993, legit Canzoneri ��� [genitalia dissected] (MNHM). PARATYPES: same data as holotype (1 ��, 1 ♀) (MNHM). Notes on type material. The male holotype is badly damaged (without head, right fore leg and left mid leg) with genitalia in a plastic microvial and it is a specimen of P. maculimanus (Zetterstedt) despite absence of fore leg tarsus annulations (illustrated by Grootaert & Chv��la 1992, fig. 212), which was probably caused by immaturity or preceding maceration in alcohol. Genitalia of this specimen exactly, even in all small details (shape of cerci), agrees with P. maculimanus in Grootaert & Chv��la (1992, figs 214���217). Comparing the terminalia of the holotype with Raffone (2002a, figs 1���3) reveals inadequacies in Raffone���s (l.c.) figures: long and strong setae on tip of right epandrial lamella are omitted in his fig. 1, shape of right cercus is different (depicted as narrowed apically) from the original specimen (where it is broadened apically) and also shape of left epandrial lamella was peculiarly illustrated by Raffone (l.c.). The male paratype is well preserved and is clearly a male of P. maculimanus. The female paratype is also damaged (lacking left fore leg and three apical tarsomeres of right fore leg, lacking left hind leg and apical four tarsomeres of left mid leg) and represents a female of P. articulatus Macquart (see also discussion under P. subarticulatus Raffone, 2002). Although Grootaert & Chv��la (1992) stated: ���It is very difficult to distinguish the females of P. articulatus and P. maculimanus. Positive identification is only reliable with males���, we believe that their mutual recognition is possible according to microtrichosity pattern of the abdomen. Females of P. articulatus have abdominal tergites 3���5 entirely microtrichose laterally, whereas females of P. maculimanus have abdominal tergites 3���5 lustrous laterally, bearing at most narrow anterior stripe of microtrichosity. Moreover, the former species has slightly narrower lustrous spot on the katepisternum. Remarks. Characters of P. maculimanus not previously mentioned in descriptions and specified here include: postpedicel up to 3X longer than broad; fore leg in some specimens darkened, especially fore femur posteriorly and sometimes also fore tibia brownish. PARATYPE: same data as holotype (1 ♀) (MSNV). Notes on type material. The male holotype is well preserved (only left mid leg missing), with dissected genitalia, originally stored in alcohol but during this study was dried and mounted on a card. It is a male of P. boreoalpinus Frey. The peculiar shape of left cercus illustrated by Raffone (2003a, fig. 5) was caused by depicting the cercus together with parts of the subepandrial sclerite (compare with fig. 321 in Chv��la 1975). This mistake was probably caused by incomplete clearing of the genitalia. The female paratype is terribly damaged (head, thorax, right hind leg and abdomen separated and glued on a card, thorax only with left legs, mid leg without tarsi, both wings and right halter absent, thorax slightly damaged). It is a specimen of P. boreoalpinus: all structures present are identical with this species including peculiarly shaped abdominal sternite 8 with pronounced lustrous tip (Raffone 2003a, fig. 8, with incorrect figure legend referring to male genitalia). Remarks. Characters of P. boreoalpinus not previously mentioned in descriptions and specified here include: face very narrow in middle, almost linear (0.02 mm wide); postpedicel with subapical group of rather long setulae (about 0.03 mm long), variable in colour from almost entirely dark to yellow (both holotype and paratype of P. pseudoalter have postpedicel entirely yellow); compound eyes swollen ventrally and anteriorly, so they are distinctly kidney shaped, with lower facets slightly enlarged; katepisternum lustrous, with only lower part and narrow hind margin microtrichose; basal part of anal vein and apical part of vein CuP scarcely visible, almost absent; last tarsomere entirely dark but often one or two penultimate tarsomeres also darkened, more often on mid and hind legs. Female sternite 8 lustrous dorsally, with pronounced dorsal posterior corner. Male genitalia are extremely variable but all forms described below have one shared feature typical for this species: presence of finger-like extension of subepandrial sclerite, merging into a hollow in dorsal part of left epandrial lamella (depicted by Chv��la 1975, fig. 321). Ventral setae on left epandrial lamella are about 1/3 as long as lamella is high in some specimens but almost as long as lamella is high in other specimens. Right surstylus and left cercus are extremely variable. Commonly (form A): the right surstylus is deeply bifurcated, interoventral arm being narrowly digitiform and interodorsal arm broader, slightly concave apically, with one corner sharp tipped and the other rounded (rarely both tips are sharp���as in Fig. 13); left cercus has elongated polished and bent tip. Other specimens (form B) have left cercus simple, broader or narrower (or even with small ventral projection) and right surstylus twice bifurcated (i.e. interoventral arm bears four digitiform processes���as in Fig. 14). Still another specimen (form C, from Grossglockner) has broader arm of right surstylus with rather long setae in middle of its apical part (Fig. 16). Holotype of P. pseudoalter is most similar to form A: left cercus has elongated and bent tip and right surstylus is deeply bifurcated with interoventral arm narrowly digitiform and the broader arm nearly rectangular with only one of the outer corners slightly sharpened (Fig. 15). All forms are interpreted here as variability of the single species. Black species with 1 pair of vertical setae; basal antennal segments reddish-yellow, postpedicel black, narrow; thorax microtrichose; anterior notopleural seta present; katepisternum in middle with urn-like lustrous spot, all setae yellow; legs yellow, usually with darkened fore (or also mid and hind) coxa and sometimes also base of fore femur brownish-yellow, tarsi mostly with indefinite darker annulations, apical half or more of last segment black, mid femur with long posteroventrals, mid tibia with long sharp-tipped apical spur. Description. Male. Head black, light grey microtrichose, face more silvery microtrichose. Frons �� 0.05 mm broad on lower part (about as broad as pedicel) and �� 0.07 mm broad on upper part. Face �� 0.04 mm broad at middle. Gena lustrous, narrow. Clypeus microtrichose. Antenna with both basal segments reddish-yellow, postpedicel and stylus black; postpedicel narrow at base (only very slightly broader than pedicel), 3.1���3.9 X longer than broad; stylus 1.2���1.5 X longer than postpedicel. Palpus oval, short (about half as long as proboscis), variable in colour (yellow to almost brown), with 1���2 setae. Ocellar setae pale, �� 0.10 mm long. One pair of cruciate, pale vertical setae, �� 0.13 mm long, closely situated (distance �� 0.12 mm). Occiput with pale (yellowish-white) setae, short on upper part and longer below. Proboscis half as long as height of head, brownish-black. Thorax black, light grey microtrichose; katepisternum with urn-like lustrous spot in middle leaving both anterior and posterior margins microtrichose. All setae yellow. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta long and strong (and several additional much smaller setae); acrostichals biserial, short (�� 0.06 mm), about 7���11 setae per row; dorsocentrals nearly uniserial (mostly with only 2���4 setae outside row), slightly but distinctly longer and stronger (more bristle-like) than acrostichals, ending in 1���2 longer prescutellars; notopleuron with 1 anterior seta present and 2 long setae on posterior part, upper seta stronger and longer than lower one, with additional smaller setae nearby; 1 long postalar and 1 pair of scutellar setae (with 2 additional small hairs). Wing clear, with pale veins. R 4 + 5 and M 1 slightly bowed, in apical part almost parallel. Crossveins widely separated. Cu slightly recurrent. Costal seta yellow, long. Squama yellow with yellow fringes, halter pale yellow. Legs slightly variable in colour: in most specimens yellow with darkened (brownish-yellow) fore (or sometimes also mid and hind) coxa, in about 1 / 3 rd of specimens also base of fore femur brownish-yellow (about 1 / 3 rd of specimens, several of them distinctly immature, with entirely yellow coxae and femora); tarsi yellow, mostly with indefinite darker annulations, apical 2 / 3 rds of last segment contrastingly black; mid and hind tarsi usually darker than fore tarsi. Fore femur distinctly thickened on basal third, setae both dorsally and ventrally half as long as depth of femur or slightly longer. Fore tibia slightly spindle-shaped dilated, short pale setose. Mid femur thickened in middle (nearly 1.5 X broader than fore femur), with long pale posteroventral setae. Mid tibia with dark long and sharply pointed apical spur. Hind femur thin, with rather spinelike ventral setae. Hind tibia thin, short and pale setose. Abdomen blackish brown, lustrous, tergites 1���2 broadly and tergite 3 only very narrowly microtrichose on sides; sparsely covered with pale (whitish yellow), short setae on dorsum of tergites and somewhat longer on sides of last two segments. Genitalia (Figs 36���38) with right cercus digitiform, somewhat gradually broadened toward apex, moderately long, with scattered short setae; left cercus somewhat longer and broader on basal part than right cercus, slightly broadened subapically, with scattered short setae; left epandrial lamella (Fig. 38) subtriangular, near base with somewhat convex ventral margin bearing about 30 wavy setae; right epandrial lamella (Fig. 36) elongate ovate, with row of several long subapical setae and some setae along ventral margin; right surstylus short, narrow. Female. Similar to male except as follows: fore tarsi darker than in male: usually tarsomere 2 brown over apical half or so and tarsomeres 3���4 brown over more than 2 / 3 rds of their length (tarsi darker than in female of P. pallidiventris (Meigen)) and apical annulations on mid and hind tarsi more brownish than in male. Last two abdominal segments microtrichose, some specimens also with narrow microtrichose lateral stripes on base of remaining tergites. Length: body 2.0���3.0 mm, wing 2.1���3.1 mm. Etymology. The species is named after the Zeravshan River (also spelled Zaravshan), on whose banks most specimens were captured. Distribution. Uzbekistan. Remarks. The species described above may be identified according to the key. It is in many respects similar to P. longiseta (Zetterstedt); however, the new species is smaller, with darker legs, more bristle-like and less numerous (almost uniserial) dorsocentrals, at base narrower and entirely dark postpedicel and different male genitalia (left cercus without apical hook). Diagnosis. Black species with two pairs of vertical setae; postpedicel 2.3 ���3.0X longer than broad, stylus subequally long; mesoscutum lustrous in central area, katepisternum with large lustrous patch, all setae pale yellow; legs yellow with very short apical spur on mid tibia and without posteroventral setae on mid femur. Description. Male. Head black, rather thinly grey microtrichose, face including clypeus denser silvery microtrichose, frontal triangle lustrous including usually upper part of frons and V-shaped area just behind eyes (very rarely entire upper part of head thinly microtrichose, probably in immature specimens). Frons �� 0.05 mm broad on lower part (about as broad as pedicel) and 0.09 mm broad on upper part (at level of anterior ocellus). Face �� 0.04 mm broad at middle. Gena lustrous, narrow. Antenna brown, often both basal segments and sometimes also base of postpedicel slightly lighter, reddish-brown; postpedicel 2.3 ���3.0X longer than broad, stylus subequally long as postpedicel (0.8���1.1 X longer). Clypeus microtrichose. Palpus narrowly ovate, dusky yellow, small (about 1 / 4 th as long as proboscis), with long pale subterminal seta. Ocellar setae pale, �� 0.09 mm long (ocellar triangle and vertex with 3 or more pairs of additional shorter setae behind anterior pair of ocellars). Two pairs of pale vertical setae, inner pair �� 0.15 mm long, rather widely separated (�� 0.20 mm apart). Occiput sparsely covered with pale, short setae dorsally and somewhat longer setae ventrally. Proboscis almost 2 / 3 rds as long as height of head, brownish-black. Thorax blackish-brown, mesoscutum largely lustrous (in central part up to extreme front), leaving following microtrichose areas: postalar calli including nearby part of mesoscutum, notopleuron, scutellum and entire prescutellar area; pleura more densely microtrichose leaving large lustrous patch occupying katepisternum up to extreme posterior margin, with only narrow microtrichose stripe in anterior part. All setae pale yellow. Chaetotaxy: postpronotal seta moderately long and strong; acrostichals usually mostly irregularly quadriserial, short (�� 0.04 mm), exact number of setae in one row difficult to state but about 8���12, very rarely (in two specimens only) acrostichals almost regularly biserial; dorsocentrals irregularly biserial to nearly triserial, subequally long as acrostichals, outer row(s) somewhat divergent, last 1���2 pairs strong and long; notopleuron with two long setae on posterior part; 1 postalar and 1 pair of scutellar setae (with 2 small hairs). Wing clear, with pale veins. R 4 + 5 and M 1 nearly straight and parallel. Crossveins very narrowly separated. Cu slightly recurrent. Costal seta yellow, moderately long. Squama yellow with yellow fringes. Halter pale yellow. Legs yellow including all coxae and tarsi (except usual dark spot on all trochanters), hind tarsus rarely darkened apically. All setae pale (except ventral spines on mid femur and tibia). Fore femur thickened on basal third, with short pale setae both dorsally and ventrally (scarcely 1 / 3 rd as long as depth of femur). Fore tibia very slightly thickened, short setose (no dark setae dorsally). Mid femur slightly swollen just on base, not much broader than fore femur, without posteroventral setae, but spine-like setae longer in posterior row. Mid tibia with very short apical spur. Hind femur 3 / 4 as broad as mid femur, short setose. Hind tibia thin without dark setae. Abdomen blackish-brown, lustrous, only lateral parts of tergite 1 and narrow base of tergite 2 microtrichose; sparsely covered with short pale setae, somewhat longer setae on ventral part of terminal segments. Genitalia (Figs 7���9) with very short digitiform cerci, left cercus very narrow, right cercus about twice broader but somewhat shorter than left cercus; left epandrial lamella with deep dorsal excision on subapical part, with straight ventral margin bearing several short ordinary setae on about middle; right epandrial lamella as in Fig. 9, with 3���4 spines on apical part. Female. Similar to male except as follows: last two abdominal segments microtrichose. Length: body 1.8���2.3 mm, wing 2.0��� 2.3 mm. Etymology. The species specific name stresses similarity with P. commutatus. Distribution. Uzbekistan. Remarks.
