BACKGROUND: Racial/ethnic minorities face stark inequalities in lung cancer incidence, treatment, survival, and mortality compared with U.S. born non-Hispanic Whites. Lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is effective at reducing lung cancer mortality in high-risk current and former smokers and is recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). This study sought to assess primary care providers’ (PCPs’) knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practice related to LCS and the recent USPSTF guidelines in five high risk immigrant communities in New York City. METHODS: We surveyed 83 eligible PCPs between December 2016 and January 2018 through surveys sent by mail, email, and fax, administered by phone or in-person. The survey included questions about providers’ clinical practice, knowledge, attitudes and beliefs related to LCS and the USPSTF guidelines. Information about patient demographics, PCPs’ training background and practice type were also collected. RESULTS: Sixty-seven percent of respondents reported that they did not have established guidelines for LCS at their practice and 52% expressed that “vague” screening criteria influenced their referral processes for LCS. Barriers to LCS with LDCT included concerns that LDCT is not covered by insurance, patients’ fears of screening results, and patients’ concerns regarding radiation exposure. DISCUSSION: Targeted educational interventions for both PCPs and patients may increase access to recommended LCS, especially for populations at disproportionate risk for lung cancer.

The socio-politico-cultural context of sexual orientation often influences the attitudes, beliefs, and values produced in a given society. This study employed a qualitative methodology to explore the current attitudes, beliefs, and values of Canadian undergraduate students about sexual orientation. Students in a large human sexuality course at a Canadian university completed open-ended questions on the educational platform Top Hat. The data were analyzed using discourse analysis and four threads of discourse emerged: 1) The Nature of Sexual Orientation, 2) Gender Norms and Bisexuality, 3) Shared Connections, and 4) Foundations of Friendships. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge relating to changing attitudes, beliefs, and values about sexual orientation of Canadian university students.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations for complications related to opioid use disorder (OUD) are increasing. Hospitalists care for most hospitalized patients in the United States, yet little is known about their attitudes, beliefs, and clinical practices regarding OUD-related care. METHODS: We distributed an online survey to hospitalists in the United States to measure how access to addiction specialists affected attitudes and beliefs regarding hospital-based OUD care, OUD screening practices, naloxone prescribing, and buprenorphine initiation. RESULTS: Among 262 respondents, 67.9% (n=178) reported having access to addiction specialists. While 84.5% (n=221) reported often or always caring for patients with OUD, 48.2% (n=126) rarely or never screened for OUD, 57.1% (n=149) rarely or never prescribed or recommended naloxone as harm reduction, and 88.9% (n=233) rarely or never initiated buprenorphine. Vaccine coverage is below desired levels in Canada, despite National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommendations. One solution to improve coverage is to offer vaccines in pharmacies. We explore the awareness, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of the general public in four communities in Nova Scotia (NS) and New Brunswick (NB) about the changing role of pharmacists as immunizers. Adult members of the public were invited to complete an online survey through advertisements in print and online, and through e-mail lists at local universities. Immunization status among participants (n = 985) varied across vaccines with slightly more than one-half of the participants (51.8%) reporting receipt of a seasonal influenza vaccine last year, 38.0% reporting receipt of the meningococcal C or ACWY vaccine, and 77.7% reporting receipt of the pertussis vaccine. Despite variable self-reported receipt of vaccines, the pervasive belief that participants were not at risk of getting vaccine-preventable diseases, and a lack of awareness about which vaccines are recommended for adults, participants in this study held vaccine-positive beliefs. Participants, especially those who had previously been vaccinated in a pharmacy (39.0%), were supportive of the inclusion of pharmacists as immunizers although nearly one-half of the participants would feel more comfortable getting vaccinated by a pharmacist if another practitioner recommended it to them. While cost threatens to be a barrier to pharmacists as immunizers, this study suggests that they are well-positioned to improve vaccine coverage and to communicate recommendations and other vaccine-related information to the public.

Despite dedication of tremendous resources to developing literary proficiencies, advanced readers may remain an underserved and understudied population. This qualitative study included nine preadolescent participants aged 10–12 years who demonstrated reading comprehension abilities within the top 10% on a national normed achievement battery. The researchers gathered interview data from participants with corroborating evidence from their parents and their book club teacher. The grounded theory analyses found advanced readers to demonstrate superior reading comprehension and the ability to read entire books quickly. Participants reported positive attitudes toward reading in general and preferred out of school reading over the limiting structures of school reading. Some evidence supported a connection between reading and identity exploration through narrative imagination and empathetic relations to characters and narratives. Advanced readers may present cognitive characteristics, as well as behaviors and motivations that require differentiated learning designs.

Services have a duty to uphold the personal and sexual relationship (PSR) rights of adults with intellectual disability. However, little is known about how social care workers' (SCWs) perceptions of public views of intellectual disability and sexuality might affect their attitudes, believes and behaviours towards supporting PSR needs. This exploratory study addresses this gap in knowledge.Qualitative interviews using critical incident technique were conducted with 18 SCWs. Data were transcribed and thematically analysed.Four dominant themes were identified; socio-cultural, practice-policy gaps, fear and safety needs. These highlights how perceptions of public attitudes impact on SCWs' attitudes towards supporting development of PSR both directly and through perceptions of organisational policies. This leads to prioritisation of safety needs over support for PSR.Public expectations strongly influenced SCWs' interpretation of organisational policy, emphasising a need for practice-based support to manage public expectations and reduce fear.

The benefits of peer tutoring in mathematics have repeatedly been proven at different educational levels. Nevertheless, mathematics teachers’ perceptions towards this methodology and whether they are adequately trained to implement the practice is information that remains uncertain. Surveys and questionnaires directed at teachers regarding peer tutoring are lacking. Determining teachers’ knowledge and perceptions on this topic is important, as that knowledge and those perceptions affect their teaching practices and, therefore, student learning. This validation study was designed to evaluate questionnaire responses from mathematics teachers regarding their knowledge, perceptions and attitudes towards peer tutoring so that implications for practice and policy could be determined. A four-factor structure questionnaire was developed. Strong correlations were reported between knowledge and attitudes. Females, less experienced and public school teachers showed greater values. A conclusion is that female teachers are more sensitive than male teachers regarding students’ inclusion and active learning.

The average temperature in Alaska and the North American Arctic has risen at twice the rate of the global average due to climate change, causing changes to the natural environment that affect the physical, social, and emotional well‐being of people and communities. Social workers must be prepared to respond. Using a non‐probability, convenience sample, this study surveyed 159 social workers in Alaska to assess their attitudes and their perceptions of the effects of climate change on their clients and constituents. Results indicate that social workers in Alaska believe that climate change is happening, that human activities are responsible, and that it is a large threat to people in Alaska. Over 75% believe that climate change is dangerous for their clients now or will be dangerous in 10 years. Social workers report that in the past year their clients or constituents have experienced multiple climate change‐related problems with community infrastructure, health, and mental health.

Background: Pharmacy students receive training to effectively communicate with patients about their medications. Objectives: A theory-based approach (Communication Accommodation Theory [CAT]) was used to investigate the impact of communication skills’ tutorials on Pharmacy students’ self-reported attitudes, beliefs and behaviours in patient communication. Methods: Final year Pharmacy students completed an online, 30-item, patient-centred communication survey at three points in time, before and after attending three CAT-based tutorials (Survey #1 and Survey #2). Survey #3 was distributed six to twelve months into students’ intern training year (post-graduation). Differences between participants’ responses over time were measured and analysed. Results: Response rates were 78% for Survey #1, 84% for Survey #2, and 28% for Survey #3. Further analysis indicated that Survey #3 respondents were not statistically different from the larger sample size. Key areas changed from baseline (Survey #1) to post tutorials (Survey #2) and were sustained well into Pharmacy students’ intern year (Survey #3). Conclusions: This novel research indicated growing awareness and retention of key communication behaviours over time.

Background Acupuncture during pregnancy and the perinatal period aims to increase normal birth and enhance a woman’s birth experience by decreasing intervention and adverse birth outcomes. Acupuncture in Australian maternity services has not been well accepted, and there is limited research evidence as to whether women are supportive of acupuncture treatment. Objective The aims of this study were to understand childbearing aged women’s attitudes, beliefs and practices to using acupuncture during pregnancy and the perinatal period, and possible acceptance of a midwife providing acupuncture treatments. Design A descriptive/explorative quantitative methodology was used to gather data from childbearing aged women using an online survey. Statistical analysis was used for quantitative data and content analysis for the free-text responses. Recruitment of respondents took place in 2017 via Facebook birth and parenting groups and pages. Findings Of 304 respondents, 68% (n = 206) had used acupuncture, and of these, 68% (n = 140) used acupuncture for concerns during pregnancy and the perinatal period. The majority of respondents indicated they would consider acupuncture during pregnancy and the perinatal period (89%) and 62% indicated they would have a midwife provide a treatment. The free-text responses provided mostly positive comments on the outcomes and satisfaction of acupuncture treatments (84% n = 199). Conclusion The majority of respondents would consider acupuncture during pregnancy and the perinatal period, were positive to trying acupuncture for various concerns, and were positive towards a midwife providing treatments. These findings raise awareness of women’s desire for the choice of an acupuncture treatment during pregnancy and the perinatal period.

Vaccine coverage for maternal vaccines is suboptimal; only about half of pregnant women received influenza and Tdap vaccines in 2018. We explored knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, intentions, and trust regarding maternal and infant vaccines among pregnant women. Between June 2017 and July 2018, we surveyed 2196 pregnant women recruited from geographically and socio-demographically diverse prenatal care practices in Georgia and Colorado (56% response rate). Fifty-six percent of pregnant women intended to receive both influenza and Tdap vaccines during pregnancy and 68% intended to vaccinate their baby with all recommended vaccines on time. Attitudinal constructs associated with intention to vaccinate include confidence in vaccine safety (ORs: 16–38) and efficacy (ORs: 4–19), perceived risk of vaccine-preventable diseases (ORs: 2–6), social norms (ORs: 4–10), and trust in sources of vaccine information. Women pregnant with their first child were less likely than women who had prior children to intend to vaccinate themselves and their children, more likely to be unsure about their intentions to receive both maternal and infant vaccines, and less likely to report feeling they had enough knowledge or information about vaccines and vaccine safety (p < .01). This demonstrates an opportunity for vaccine education to increase vaccine confidence and informed decision-making, especially among first-time pregnant women.

Skin cancers are the most common malignancies diagnosed worldwide. In Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, skin cancer remains a significant health burden. Multiple studies have attempted to elucidate patient knowledge and attitudes regarding skin cancer risks and behavioral interventions to reduce risks. A systematic literature search of relevant articles was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and the Saudi Digital Library databases. A narrative analysis of relevant study results was conducted. A total of 12 studies were reviewed across GCC. These studies revealed common themes among GCC populations. Many study participants were aware that excess sun exposure represents a threat to health and increases cancer risk. Several studies reported sun exposure, with a mean of 19.13 h per week. More studies reported patients engaging in lower or no sunscreen use rather than regular sunscreen use. There are discrepancies in the understanding of sun exposure risk and risk mitigation practices among the study populations. Skin cancer poses a significant burden to patients in GCC countries and improved patient education will enhance population health.

Background Obstetricians’ beliefs, attitudes, and clinical practices related to cesarean delivery on maternal request appears particularly important in the context of high cesarean section rate. However, few relative studies have been conducted. Aim To examine Chinese obstetricians’ attitudes, beliefs, and clinical practices with regard to cesarean delivery on maternal request, and to explore influencing factors associated with their practices of cesarean delivery on maternal request. Methods A cross-sectional design was used. Self-administered anonymous questionnaires were distributed to eligible obstetricians at the Congress of the Shanxi Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics as well as the Congress of the Hainan Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics. The overall response rate was 526/649 (81.05%). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine independent effects on obstetrician’s clinical practices related to cesarean delivery on maternal request. Findings Obstetricians who agreed with pregnant women’s decision to choose cesarean section directly and believed the benefits of this procedure outweigh the risks had higher odds of performing cesarean delivery on maternal request. In addition, measures to decrease cesarean section at hospitals were associated with reduced likelihood to perform cesarean delivery on maternal request. Conclusions The present study showed a strong correlation between obstetricians’ attitudes, beliefs, as well as interventions to decrease cesarean section at hospitals and their clinical practices of cesarean delivery on maternal request. Measures to enhance the training of obstetricians and reduce CS at hospitals are essential to decrease the overall cesarean section rate in China.

This chapter provides a theoretical and empirical overview of the sexual attitudes, beliefs, and values expressed by emerging adults. It highlights contemporary research that represents the changing patterns in this sociocultural arena. Furthermore, it is contended that because attitudes, beliefs, and values contribute to the makeup of sexual subjectivities, these subjectivities can best be understood within broader assemblages. Thus, the chapter is loosely organized around the following themes: peers, families, religion, and visual media. The chapter concludes by highlighting the absence of academic inquiries related to queer identified emerging adults and persons who are not enrolled in college, and it suggests areas for future research.

Background Negative health-care provider attitudes are a contributing factor to the myriad health disparities faced by people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Nursing comprises the nation's largest health-care profession, yet no integrative review on this topic is found. Purpose To organize findings of studies exploring nurses' attitudes, beliefs, and emotions about caring for adults with ID, to identify areas for future research, and to discuss recommendations for nursing practice. Methods Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review method guided this study. Results Twenty studies were conducted across eight countries, dichotomized according to mainstream or ID nursing specialty, and were mostly setting-specific. Common themes included: "knowing the person," "paternalism/infantilization," "communication challenges," "organizational support," "time," and "ID-specific knowledge and experience." Mainstream nurses' emotions were primarily negative, whereas ID nurses experienced conflicting positive and negative emotions. Antecedents and effects of nurse attitudes and emotions on the quality of care of adults with ID were identified. Conclusions/implications Despite recent increased research on this topic across multiple countries, further research is needed. The findings of this study will aid the development of strategies to address negative nurse attitudes toward caring for adults with ID and act as a foundation for future research beyond the descriptive stage.

Introduction In the USA, nearly one in three people will experience herpes zoster (HZ) in their lifetime. Underserved communities may be at even higher risk due to several factors, including access to healthcare, education, and co-morbid conditions. The purpose of this study was to investigate current knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices (KABP) relative to HZ and HZ vaccines in a large urban city. Methods A cross-sectional KABP survey was conducted via in-person interview among 381 participants aged ≥ 50 years in Detroit, MI, USA, from June to August 2018. The aim of this study was to study and compare attitudes, beliefs and knowledge about doping of footballers, from elite to under-18 categories.The descriptive exploratory design used an instrument combining a validated questionnaire (Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale: PEAS) with qualitative open-ended questions.A total of 1324 Spanish football players (average age 22.56 ± 5.62 years) from 88 football teams that ranged from elite to under-18 categories: Elite (ELI, n = 304), non-elite Professional (PRO, n = 308), top Amateur (AMA, n = 330), elite Under-18 (U18, n = 334) and elite Female (FEM, n = 48) composed the sample.PEAS overall scores (range 17-102, with higher scores representing more permissive attitudes) was 34.02 ± 11.08. The overall scores for all groups analysed were: FEM: 33.75 ± 14.73; ELI: 30.61 ± 9.91; PRO: 34.23 ± 11.13; AMA: 35.05 ± 10.35; and U18: 35.93 ± 11.50. Significant differences were observed between ELI and PRO (p 0.001), ELI and AMA (p 0.001), and ELI and U18 (p 0.001). 95% of participants did not know the meaning of WADA; 97.4% did not know the Prohibited List; 5% admitted having used banned substances and 23.7% knew dopers.This study showed different an important lack of knowledge about doping and an high levels of supplement use in this sample of footballers assessed. It which clearly reinforces the idea of implementing a wide educational doping prevention programme in football environment.

We aimed to examine attitudes, beliefs, and current behavior toward risk factors and prevention of shoulder injuries, and to investigate the application of an exercise program during a cluster-randomized controlled trial aiming to prevent shoulder injuries in elite handball. All captains and coaches of 44 elite handball teams (22 male and 22 female) constituting the intervention (21 teams) and control arm (n = 23 teams) in the trial were invited to take part in a survey. A questionnaire, based on the Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance framework, addressing the end user perspective on risk factors and prevention of shoulder injuries, as well as key issues related to the application of the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center (OSTRC) Shoulder Injury Prevention Programme, was distributed using electronic survey software. The response rate was 100%. Overall, the majority of coaches (84%) and captains (89%) believed that handball players are at high risk for shoulder injuries. All delivery agents in the trial reported to be familiar with the exercise program and the majority believed in a preventative effect (coaches 90% and captains 81%). Only a minority reported full compliance with the recommended frequency (coaches 29%, captains 14%), with program being too time-consuming (coaches 67%, captains 81%) and lack of player motivation (coaches 76%, captains 62%) as the main barriers. Our results suggest that there is fertile ground for implementation of the OSTRC Shoulder Injury Prevention Programme in elite handball, with program length and lack of player motivation as the main barriers to overcome.

Background Self-harm injuries represent a significant minority of attendances within burns services. However, there is minimal research exploring burns surgeons’ attitudes and beliefs about self-harm and how treatment decisions are made. Method Burns surgeons (n = 37) completed a questionnaire which measured attitudes and beliefs about self-harm. Surgical decision-making was also explored by prompting surgeons to make treatment decisions for hypothetical case scenarios, and describe their rationale behind their decisions. Results The majority of surgeons reported positive attitudes about self-harm. However, around one in ten judged patients who self-harm more negatively, around a fifth offer surgery less frequently and almost a quarter believed that surgery should only be offered a limited number of times in repeated self-harm. Unhelpful or inaccurate beliefs (e.g. self-harm is ‘attention seeking,’ surgery would reinforce the self-harm, and that patients who self-harm tamper with skin grafts) were evident in some surgeons. Thematic analysis of qualitative data describing surgical decisions identified five themes: Equal Access to Care; Multidisciplinary Working; Old or Unhelpful Stories; Concerns about Tampering; and Repeated vs. First Time Self-Harm Episodes. More experienced surgeons were less judgmental, more likely to offer surgical interventions, and less likely to hold unhelpful or inaccurate beliefs compared to junior surgeons. Conclusions Some surgeons are not acting in line with UK guidance on the management of self-harm injuries. Education on the topic of self-harm is essential in burns services and this may be particularly important early on during surgical careers. Prospective research regarding surgical treatments and outcomes following self-harm is required.

Background Advances in research suggest the possibility of improving routine clinical care for preeclampsia using screening (predictive) and diagnostic tests. The views of women should be incorporated into the way in which such tests are used. Therefore, we explored the views of women with experience of preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDPs) about predictive and diagnostic tests, treatment risks, and expectant management. Method Eight hundred and seven women with experience of preeclampsia or other HDPs completed an online questionnaire. These women were participants in the Preeclampsia Registry (USA). The questionnaire contained 22 items to elicit women’s views about predictive tests (n = 8); diagnostic tests (n = 5); treatment risks (n = 7), and expectant management (n = 2). An optional text box allowed participants to add qualitative open-ended comments. Levels of agreement with the statements were reported descriptively for the sample as a whole, and a preliminary investigation of the role of lived experience in shaping women’s views was conducted by comparing subgroups within the sample based on time of HDP delivery (preterm/term). The qualitative data provided in the optional text box was analysed using inductive thematic analysis to examine participants’ responses. Results Women generally favored predictive and diagnostic testing, although not because they would opt for termination of pregnancy. Participants generally disagreed that taking daily low-dose aspirin (LDA) would make them nervous, with disagreement significantly higher in the preterm delivery subgroup. A high proportion of participants, especially in the preterm delivery subgroup, would take LDA throughout pregnancy. The majority of participants would be more worried about the possibility of preeclampsia than about the risks of treatments to their health (60%), and that proportion was significantly higher in the preterm delivery subgroup. There were no differences between subgroups in the views expressed about expectant management, although opinion was divided in both groups. Overall, most participants opted to put the baby’s interests first. Conclusion Women with experience of hypertensive disorders were enthusiastic about improved predictive and diagnostic tests. However, varied views about treatment options and expectant management suggest the need for a shared decision-making tool to enable healthcare professionals to support pregnant women’s decision-making to maximize the utility of these tests and interventions.

Objectives: To assess attitudes, beliefs and knowledge towards medical cannabis (MC) among Greek nursing students by year of study and undergraduate/postgraduate status. Methods: 294 (229 undergraduate and 65 postgraduate) students participated in this survey. Descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson's chi-squared, t-test) were applied using SPSS.24 (p ≤ 0.05). Results: Participant mean age (SD) was 23.1(6.6) years and 80.0 % of the study cohort was female. Senior undergraduate participants (3rd/4th year of study) reported more positive attitudes about MC benefits for mental health treatment compared to junior participants (1st/2nd year) (p = 0.017). Junior participants were more inclined to believe there are serious physical health risks associated with cannabis use (p = 0.038). Undergraduates, more than postgraduates, expressed a need for MC education and training for academic and practice purposes (p = 0.015); and, that there are physical and mental health risks associated with cannabis use (p = 0.007). Additionally, undergraduate nursing students were less likely than postgraduates to report knowledge about MC effectiveness for a variety of medical conditions (p ≤ 0.047); personal cannabis use for recreational purposes (p < 0.001); and, medical (p = 0.018) or recreational (p < 0.001) cannabis use among family members. The vast majority of all nursing students surveyed reported the need for formal education about MC (i.e., theoretical, clinical, laws and regulations) as part of their studies. Conclusion: Greek nursing student attitudes, beliefs and knowledge about MC vary according to year of study and undergraduate/postgraduate status. From this study, formal education on MC is recommended for Greek nursing students.

This descriptive study was designed with two main purposes: (a) to provide researchers and educators with baseline information about current YouTube music usages and practices and (b) to examine parental attitudes and beliefs towards YouTube as a music education resource. One hundred ninety-two (N = 192) parents of toddler-age children (16-to-36 months old) participated in a researcher-constructed survey designed to examine the digital home music environment, digital musical parenting, and parent-child YouTube music experiences. Results indicated that parents accessed YouTube regularly, maintained positive attitudes towards YouTube, and considered YouTube to be an effective resource for children's overall learning and music skills. Data suggested that children engage with and respond to digital music in various ways, and parental beliefs about YouTube were multi-faceted. Findings suggested a need for accessible musical parenting guidelines and resources in this YouTube generation.

Introduction: The response to a health threat, such as acute coronary syndrome symptoms (ACS), is determined by the patient\'s ability to identify the symptoms, establish the relationship with the disease and respond appropriately. This important ability of people with type 2 diabetes, who are at risk of having this syndrome, can be better understood by assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs concerning the ACS and the response to it. Objectives: To evaluate the perceived knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs of type 2 diabetes clients toward acute coronary syndrome; to explore the association between the measures of the perceived acute coronary syndrome and their sociodemographic and clinical characteristics; and to explore the correlations between the measures of the perceived acute coronary syndrome and the measures of anxiety and depression symptoms. Methods: The study was carried out at Linden, Guyana, with 60 type 2 diabetes clients using a sociodemographic and clinical data questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale questionnaire, and Acute Coronary-Response Index. All questionnaires were completed by the researcher during a face to face interview with each client. Descriptive analyses were performed for all variables. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the scores of the ACS Response Index subscales and the HADS anxiety and depression symptoms with sex, age, time since diabetes diagnosis and body mass index (not overweight or overweight). Comparisons were made between the measures of the ACS - Response Index subscales and educational levels (primary, secondary, university and professional) using the Kruskal-Wallis test for multiple comparisons. The Spearman\'s correlation coefficient was used to calculate the correlations between the scores of the ACS - Response Index subscales and the anxiety and depression symptoms. The significance level for all the tests that were conducted was set at 0.05. Results: The total mean score of the Knowledge subscale was 9.12 (S.D.=3.4). Two participants had more than 70% of the correct answers. The number of participants who recognized the main symptoms of acute coronary syndrome varied from 27.1% to 49.2%. The total mean score of the Attitudes subscale was 11.2 (S.D.=3.5) and for beliefs 21.3 (S.D.=4.5). Clients with university level had better knowledge when compared to clients with clients who had primary level (p=0.043). Strong and positive correlation was found between knowledge and symptoms of depression, but not significant (r=0.63; p=0.67). Chapter 6 provides the results from the descriptive and multivariate analyses of family member responses to attitude and belief questions regarding trust, redistributive justice, human capital investment, centrality of work, intentions to work, risk-taking, cooperative attitudes/intentions, and individual achievement. The importance of metaphorical meaning is also addressed. Employing ordinary least squares, binomial, and multinomial logit regressions, the authors find that trust, risk-taking, cooperative attitudes, and individual achievement are consequential in distinguishing families in Sweden, Italy, the United States, and India. They also find strong generational effects with millennials expressing significantly different attitudes and beliefs than those of their grandparents on redistributive justice, human capital investment, the centrality of work, risk-taking, and individual achievement. They find little evidence to support the utility of cultural metaphors, as defined by Gannon and associates, as an emic device to capture cultural value orientation.

Little is known about the impact of religion on vaccine receptivity in Malaysia. Improved vaccine uptake is positively reflected in the reduction of vaccine-preventable diseases. This study aimed to explore and compare the attitudes, religious beliefs, and familiarity regarding vaccination between the religious studies and science students. A survey-based cross-sectional study was conducted between a convenient sample of students (N = 300) of religious studies and applied sciences in Kuantan, Malaysia. A new, face- and content-validated questionnaire was used for data collection. A total of 206 students responded to the questionnaire, giving a response rate of 86.6%. Overall, participants demonstrated positive attitudes towards vaccination (n = 185, 89.9%). Only a minority of respondents expressed an opposition to vaccination (n = 21, 10.2%). Religious factors (permissibility) of vaccines (n = 12, 57.1%) and harm associated with the vaccine (n = 13, 61.9%) were the most common reasons for not supporting vaccination among the non-supporters. Most (n = 135, 65.5%) respondents agreed that vaccination is parallel with the Islamic concept of protecting life and preventing harm. Almost half of the respondents (n = 98, 47.6%) admit to declaring "Fatwa" to oblige parents to vaccinate their children. Religious beliefs and safety issues surrounding immunisation were reported as the major barriers for the support of immunisation. Well-designed programs are recommended to reshape the religious beliefs and convictions among students toward vaccination.

Recent studies revealed that amateur athletes, especially young ones, have an increasing tendency of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) usage. The aim of this study was to explore PEDs attitudes, beliefs, and practices among young, amateur Croatian athletes. This cross-sectional study using a specially designed questionnaire as a research tool was done during the August 2019 to January 2020 period among a convenient sample of 400 amateur athletes of median age 18 (interquartile range 15 to 21) years. The prevalence of current PEDs usage was 1.3%, while past PEDs usage prevalence was 3.3%. Current PEDs usage was more frequent among young adults (p = 0.048) and athletes playing individual sports (p = 0.001). Athletes who were engaged in sports from one to five years had more permissive attitudes toward PEDs (p &lt, 0.001) as measured by the Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale. Female athletes had more positive beliefs about PEDs usage (p = 0.008). The study did not establish any correlation between current or past PEDs usage and attitudes toward PEDs as well as beliefs about PEDs usage. However, there was a weak positive correlation between attitudes toward PEDs and athletes’ beliefs about PEDs usage (rs = 0.465, p &lt, 0.001). PEDs usage is present among young Croatian amateur athletes. There is a need for interventions directed toward the prevention of PEDs usage in an observed subgroup of athletes.

Senate Bill 277 (SB277) eliminated nonmedical exemptions for school-entry vaccines in California, but the impact of parental vaccine knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs on vaccine decision-making has not been extensively examined within the post-SB277 context. This study generates preliminary understanding and discussion of the vaccination knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs among a pilot population of parents of kindergarten students in California after the implementation of SB277. School officials administered a cross-sectional survey to parents of kindergarten children in California from April to July 2019. Parents reported their perceptions of diseases and vaccines, key immunization beliefs, and confidence in different sources of vaccine information. Most parents (92%) had fully vaccinated their children post-SB277 and generally perceived vaccines to be safe and effective, but about 44% reported they were hesitant about childhood vaccines. The majority of parents (87%) rated vaccine information from their doctor as highly credible. This pilot group of kindergarten parents was generally supportive of vaccination and had fully vaccinated their children, but most parents still harbored concerns and misconceptions about vaccines and about public health authorities. This indicates a disconnect between parental vaccine compliance and confidence, and suggests that educational interventions could impact parental vaccine behavior and decision-making.

Objectives: To identify attitudes, beliefs and barriers to adherence to the hyposodic diet in patients with heart failure and associated factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 41 individuals. The Dietary Sodium Restriction Questionnaire was used. Fisher's test was applied for analysis. Results: Attitudes were based on family and professional relationships; in the beliefs, it was highlighted to believe in the diet to improve health. As barriers, insufficient efforts were found to change the diet and taste of low salt foods. It was associated with adherence among the components factors such as: income, perception of cardiac improvement with the diet, family history of renal and heart failure and family adherence to the diet. Conclusions: The identified attitudes and beliefs refer, respectively, to social relationships and trust in the diet to improve health status. The barriers were: insufficient effort to modify the diet and food palatability. Economic, family and clinical factors were associated with hyposodic adherence. RESUMEN Objetivos: Identificar actitudes, creencias y barreras para la adhesión a la dieta de hiposodio en pacientes con insuficiencia cardíaca y factores asociados. Métodos: Estudio transversal con 41 individuos. Se utilizó el Cuestionario de restricción de sodio en la dieta. La prueba de Fisher se aplicó para el análisis. Resultados: Las actitudes se basaron en las relaciones familiares y profesionales; En las creencias, se destacó creer en la dieta para mejorar la salud. Como barreras, se encontraron esfuerzos insuficientes para cambiar la dieta y el sabor de los alimentos bajos en sal. Se asoció con la adherencia entre los factores componentes como: ingresos, percepción de mejoría cardíaca con la dieta, antecedentes familiares de insuficiencia renal y cardíaca y adherencia familiar a la dieta. Conclusiones: Las actitudes y creencias identificadas se refieren, respectivamente, a las relaciones sociales y la confianza en la dieta para mejorar el estado de salud. Las barreras fueron: esfuerzo insuficiente para modificar la dieta y la palatabilidad de los alimentos. Factores económicos, familiares y clínicos se asociaron con baja adherencia al sodio. Associou-se à adesão entre os componentes fatores como: renda, percepção da melhora cardíaca com a dieta, histórico familiar de insuficiência renal e cardíaca e adesão familiar à dieta. Conclusões: As atitudes e crenças identificadas referem-se, respectivamente, às relações sociais e à confiança na dieta para melhorar a condição de saúde. As barreiras foram: empenho insuficiente em modificar a dieta e a palatabilidade alimentar. Fatores econômicos, familiares e clínicos estiveram associados à adesão hipossódica.

In this study the relationship between treatment outcomes and antiretroviral treatment (ART) recipients’ knowledge, attitudes and beliefs towards HIV/AIDS was analysed. The study employed the positivist paradigm, guided by the Health Belief Model in explaining the intricate relationship between disease, sick-role behaviour and the expected outcome of treatment. The target population comprised ART recipients at Mthatha, South Africa. This study made use of a purposive sample of 112 participants, inclusive of male and female adult recipients. The respondents in this study raised a number of positive and negative issues. The results of the study revealed a significant relationship between ART recipients’ knowledge of HIV/AIDS treatment, their view that taking HIV drugs is a waste of time, and the recipients’ results of HIV/AIDS treatment. This implies that a significant difference exists between those who have a better CD4, the same CD4, and a worse CD4, based on their knowledge about taking ARVs. The study did not establish a significant relationship between treatment outcomes and some variables of recipients’ attitudes towards HIV/AIDS, which means there is no difference between the recipients based on all the attitude variables. While a significant difference exists among recipients of different treatment outcomes (CD4 counts), based on their belief that “Having HIV is a death sentence,” no significant difference was found among recipients of different CD4 counts based on their beliefs, such as: whether HIV treatment prolongs life; if a traditional healer can heal HIV; if prayer can heal HIV; that HIV has serious consequences on health; and that practising preventive actions can reduce HIV transmission.

Background: The use of prescribed medications during pregnancy is a challenge and an underestimated source of treatment burden. Levothyroxine (LT4) for the treatment of overt and subclinical hypothyroidism is extensively prescribed during pregnancy. To this end, we aimed to explore the patients' perceived benefits and risks, knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and related burden of LT4 therapy during pregnancy. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we surveyed pregnant women who were treated with LT4 during pregnancy from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2019, in a tertiary academic medical center of the United States. The anonymous online survey included questions to gather demographic data and multiple-choice questions regarding the benefits and risks, knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and burden related to LT4 use during pregnancy. Results: Sixty-four pregnant women (mean age 31.5 years) completed the study survey (response rate: 96%): 62% were diagnosed with hypothyroidism more than 12 months before pregnancy, 16% less than or about 12 months before pregnancy, and 22% during pregnancy. We found that one-third of pregnant women using LT4 had a feeling of uneasiness/anxiety due to their hypothyroidism diagnosis. About half of the respondents (45%) reported that they did not receive an explanation by their clinician regarding the maternal/fetal risks of uncontrolled hypothyroidism or the benefits of adequate control. Finally, two in three patients expressed various concerns of LT4-related treatment burden. Conclusions: Our findings support the need for increased effective communication and tailored counseling to address fears, anxiety, and uncertainties about the benefits and risks of LT4 use in pregnancy. For patients with clear benefits from LT4 treatment in pregnancy, it could help to overcome their concerns, promote adherence, and decrease adverse maternal/fetal outcomes. For patients with no clear benefits established, clinicians need to be aware of LT4-related treatment burden in pregnancy and implement patient-centered approaches in their clinical practices.
