Huggins' report lacks serious data collection on college Black Studies Departments, omits the strongest ones, fails to record their history accurately, and does not assess the research achievements of its scholars. Huggins overlooks the importance of applying an Afro-centric perspective to phenomena related to people of African descent. (PS)

The study of some of the crucial issues confronting the academic and educational enterprise variously called, African American Studies, Black Studies and Africology is presented. It is believed that Afrocentricity is generally opposed to any idea that would supplant the centrality or the agency of Africans in an analysis of African phenomena and therefore it becomes a severe critique and corrective of the Eurocentric paradigm.

Television and black protest had a symbiotic relationship during the 1960s. Martin Luther King's judgment of television's importance for the movement was crucial to black consciousness. Television brought the issues into every black person's home, and thousands were thereby moved to become participants in the civil rights struggle. Television was therefore the primary medium through which black leaders could politicize the black masses.
