Survivin belongs to a family of proteins that promote cellular proliferation and inhibit cellular apoptosis. Its overexpression in various cancer types has led to its recognition as an important marker for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this work, we compare two approaches for the immunochemical detection of survivin through surface-enhanced fluorescence or Raman spectroscopy using surfaces with nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles in the form of dendrites or aggregates as immunoassays substrates. In both substrates, a two-step non-competitive immunoassay was developed using a pair of specific monoclonal antibodies, one for detection and the other for capture. The detection antibody was biotinylated and combined with streptavidin labeled with rhodamine for the detection of surface-enhanced fluorescence, while, for the detection via Raman spectroscopy, streptavidin labeled with peroxidase was used and the signal was obtained after the application of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) precipitating substrate. It was found that the substrate with the silver dendrites provided higher fluorescence signal intensity compared to the substrate with the silver aggregates, while the opposite was observed for the Raman signal. Thus, the best substrate was used for each detection method. A detection limit of 12.5 pg/mL was achieved with both detection approaches along with a linear dynamic range up to 500 pg/mL, enabling survivin determination in human serum samples from both healthy and ovarian cancer patients for cancer diagnosis and monitoring purposes.

Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a widely employed antibiotic in veterinary treatment and in the prevention of infections, potentially leaving residues in animal-derived food products, such as milk, that are consumed by humans. Given the detrimental effects of prolonged human exposure to antibiotics, it has become imperative to develop precise and sensitive methods for monitoring the presence of OTC in food. Herein, we describe the development and results of a preliminary label-free electrochemical aptasensor with antifouling properties designed to detect OTC in milk samples. The sensor was realized by modifying a gold screen-printed electrode with α-lipoic acid–NHS and an amine-terminated aptamer. Different electrochemical techniques were used to study the steps of the fabrication process and to quantify OTC in the presence of the Fe(CN)64−/Fe(CN)63− redox couple The detectable range of concentrations satisfy the maximum residue limits set by the European Union, with an limit of detection (LOD) of 14 ng/mL in phosphate buffer (BP) and 10 ng/mL in the milk matrix, and a dynamic range of up to 500 ng/mL This study is a steppingstone towards the implementation of a sensitive monitoring method for OTC in dairy products.

The quality and authenticity of milk are of paramount importance. Cow milk is more allergenic and less nutritious than ewe, goat, or donkey milk, which are often adulterated with cow milk due to their seasonal availability and higher prices. In this work, a silicon photonic dipstick sensor accommodating two U-shaped Mach–Zehnder Interferometers (MZIs) was employed for the label-free detection of the adulteration of ewe, goat, and donkey milk with cow milk. One of the two MZIs of the chip was modified with bovine κ-casein, while the other was modified with bovine serum albumin to serve as a blank. All assay steps were performed by immersion of the chip side where the MZIs are positioned into the reagent solutions, leading to a photonic dipstick immunosensor. Thus, the chip was first immersed in a mixture of milk with anti-bovine κ-casein antibody and then in a secondary antibody solution for signal enhancement. A limit of detection of 0.05% v/v cow milk in ewe, goat, or donkey milk was achieved in 12 min using a 50-times diluted sample. This fast, sensitive, and simple assay, without the need for sample pre-processing, microfluidics, or pumps, makes the developed sensor ideal for the detection of milk adulteration at the point of need.

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is the hydroxylated form of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and is expelled in the milk of both humans and animals following the consumption of AFB1-contaminated food. AFM1 has been categorized as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Consequently, the European Commission has established a maximum allowable concentration of 50 pg/mL for AFM1 in dairy products and milk. Here, a rapid and sensitive approach for detecting AFM1 in bovine milk is presented. The analytical setup comprises a broad-band white LED, a spectrophotometer, and a silicon photonic probe, all interconnected by a bifurcated optical fiber [1]. Additionally, a laptop powers the system and facilitates signal monitoring through specialized software. The silicon photonic probe is equipped with two Mach–Zehnder interferometers: one functionalized with AFM1-bovine serum albumin conjugate, and the other with bovine serum albumin to serve as a blank. The analysis involves immersing the probe directly into a mixture of anti-AFM1 antibodies and the sample, followed by sequential immersion into biotinylated anti-rabbit IgG antibody and streptavidin solutions. The entire assay process takes 12 min, and the limit of detection in undiluted milk is 20 pg/mL, below the EU maximum allowable limit of 50 pg/mL. The assay demonstrates accuracy, with %recovery values ranging from 87.5 to 112%, and repeatability, with intra/inter-assay coefficients of variation below 7.6%. Given its analytical performance and compact instrumentation, the proposed immunosensor proves to be an ideal solution for precise on-site determination of AFM1 in milk samples.

In an attempt to expand the coordination chemistry of N,N′-bis(2,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-oxalamide (H6L) ligand, we isolated and structurally characterized two new Fe(II) Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), namely [Fe2(H2L)(H2O)5] (3D-Fe-MOF) and [Fe(H4L)(H2O)2]∙2H2O, (2D-Fe-MOF) by carefully adjusting the reaction conditions to achieve the optimal degree of deprotonation of the bridging ligand. Both MOFs were found stable in water, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction data and their ability to sorb glucose (GLU) from either an aqueous solution or artificial sweat was investigated only to show negligible sorption. A graphite paste sensor (GPE) using the 3D-Fe-MOF as a modifier was fabricated. The 3D-Fe-MOF modified GPE was assessed for non-enzymatic GLU detection in aqueous solution at pH 6 via differential pulse voltammetry and the preliminary results were discussed.

In this work, a simple and cost-efficient aptasensor strip is developed for the rapid detection of OTA in food samples. The biosensor is based on the lateral flow assay concept using an OTA-specific aptamer for biorecognition of the target analyte. The strip consists of a sample pad, a conjugate pad, a nitrocellulose membrane (NC) and an absorbent pad. The conjugate pad is loaded with the OTA-specific aptamer conjugated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The test line of the NC membrane is loaded with a specific OTA-aptamer probe and the control line is loaded with a control probe. The assay is based on a competitive format, where the OTA present in the sample combines with the OTA aptamer-AuNP conjugate and prevents the interaction between the specific probe immobilized on the test line and the OTA aptamer-AuNP conjugates; therefore, the color intensity of the test line decreases as the concentration of OTA in the sample increases. Qualitative detection of OTA is performed visually, while quantification is performed by reflectance colorimetry using a commercial scanner and image analysis. All the parameters of the assay are investigated in detail and the analytical features are established. The visual limit of detection (LOD) of the strip is 0.05 ng mL−1, while the LOD for semi-quantitative detection using reflectance colorimetry is 0.02 ng mL−1. The lateral flow strip aptasensor is applied to the detection of OTA in wine, beer, apple juice and milk samples with recoveries in the range from 91 to 114%. The assay exhibits a satisfactory selectivity for OTA with respect to other mycotoxins and lasts 20 min. Therefore, the lateral flow strip aptasensor could be useful for the rapid, low-cost and fit-for-purpose on-site detection of OTA in food samples.

Nanostructured noble metal surfaces enhance the photoluminescence emitted by fluorescent molecules, permitting the development of highly sensitive fluorescence immunoassays. To this end, surfaces with silicon nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles in the form of dendrites or aggregates were evaluated as substrates for the immunochemical detection of two ovarian cancer indicators, carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) and human epididymis protein 4 (HE4). The substrates were prepared by metal-enhanced chemical etching of silicon wafers to create, in one step, silicon nanowires and silver nanoparticles on top of them. For both analytes, non-competitive immunoassays were developed using pairs of highly specific monoclonal antibodies, one for analyte capture on the substrate and the other for detection. In order to facilitate the identification of the immunocomplexes through a reaction with streptavidin labeled with Rhodamine Red-X, the detection antibodies were biotinylated. An in-house-developed optical set-up was used for photoluminescence signal measurements after assay completion. The detection limits achieved were 2.5 U/mL and 3.12 pM for CA125 and HE4, respectively, with linear dynamic ranges extending up to 500 U/mL for CA125 and up to 500 pM for HE4, covering the concentration ranges of both healthy and ovarian cancer patients. Thus, the proposed method could be implemented for the early diagnosis and/or prognosis and monitoring of ovarian cancer.

In this work, we describe a new type of electrochemical aptasensor for the label-free detection of oxytetracycline (OTC). Thin-film gold electrodes were fabricated through sputtering gold on a Kapton film, followed by the immobilization of a thiol-modified aptamer on the electrode surface. The selective capture of OTC at the aptamer-functionalized electrodes was monitored electrochemically with the use of the [Fe(CN)6]4−/[Fe(CN)6]3− redox probe. Different experimental variables were studied, through which the metrological features for OTC determination were derived. Finally, the developed sensor was implemented to achieve the detection of OTC in a spiked milk sample.

In this work, a “green” electrochemical paper-based device (ePAD) for the voltammetric determination of Tl(I) is described. A mini voltammetric cell was patterned on chromatographic paper by using screen printing to deposit three carbon electrodes and plotting with hydrophobic ink to form a circular assay zone. The sample was added to the assay zone (which was pre-loaded with Bi(III)) and Tl(I) was quantified using anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The experimental conditions and potential interferences were studied. The limit of detection was at the low μg L−1 level, indicating that these devices can serve successfully as fit-for-purpose disposable voltammetric sensors for Tl(I).

In this work, we describe the fabrication of paper-based aptasensing devices for ampicillin determination that rely on the salt-induced aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the presence of the target. Circular paper-based devices were created on paper via pen-plotting (using water-repellent ink to create hydrophobic barriers) and modified with NaCl. The sample was incubated with an ampicillin aptamer and AuNPs and was added to the assay zones of the paper-based devices. In the absence of ampicillin, the aptamer prevented the aggregation of the AuNPs, and the assay zones remained red. When ampicillin was present, it selectively bound with the aptamer and the AuNP aggregate, producing a purple color. The color of the assay zones was monitored via a smartphone, and the color graduation was related to the ampicillin concentration in the sample. Different experimental parameters (type of paper, concentration of reagents) were investigated, and the analytical features of the method for the determination of ampicillin were established.

Aptamers are short oligonucleotides designed to possess high binding affinity towards specific target compounds (ions, molecules, or cells). Due to their function and unique advantages, aptamers are considered viable alternatives to antibodies as biorecognition elements in bioassays and biosensors. On the other hand, paper-based devices (PADs) have emerged as a promising and powerful technology for the fabrication of low-cost analytical tools, mainly intended for on-site and point-of-care applications. The present work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of paper-based aptasensors. The review describes the fabrication methods and working principles of paper-based devices, the properties of aptamers as bioreceptors, the different modes of detection used in conjunction with aptasensing PADs, and representative applications for the detection of ions, small molecules, proteins, and cells. The future challenges and prospects of these devices are also discussed.

Aptamers are synthetic single-stranded oligonucleotides that exhibit selective binding properties to specific targets, thereby providing a powerful basis for the development of selective and sensitive (bio)chemical assays. Electrochemical biosensors utilizing aptamers as biological recognition elements, namely aptasensors, are at the forefront of current research. They exploit the combination of the unique properties of aptamers with the advantages of electrochemical detection with the view to fabricate inexpensive and portable analytical platforms for rapid detection in point-of-care (POC) applications or for on-site monitoring. The immobilization of aptamers on suitable substrates is of paramount importance in order to preserve their functionality and optimize the sensors’ sensitivity. This work describes different immobilization strategies for aptamers on the surface of semiconductor-based working electrodes, including metal oxides, conductive polymers, and carbon allotropes. These are presented as platforms with tunable band gaps and various surface morphologies for the preparation of low cost, highly versatile aptasensor devices in analytical chemistry. A survey of the current literature is provided, discussing each analytical method. Future trends are outlined which envisage aptamer-based biosensing using semiconductors.

In this work, a simple, fast, and sensitive voltammetric method for the trace determination of the alkaloid drug colchicine (Colc) using a 3D-printed device is described. The electrochemical method was based on the adsorptive accumulation of the drug at a carbon-black polylactic acid (CB/PLA) working electrode, followed by voltammetric determination of the accumulated species. The plastic sensor was printed in a single step by a low-cost dual extruder 3D-printer and featured three CB/PLA electrodes (serving as working, reference, and counter electrodes) and a holder, printed from a non-conductive PLA filament. The electrochemical parameters that affected the response of the device towards Colc determination, such as accumulation time and potential, solution pH, and other variables, were optimized. Under the selected conditions, the oxidation current of Colc was proportional to the concentration of Colc, and its quantification was conducted in the concentration range of 0.6–2.2 μmol L−1 with a limit of detection of 0.11 μmol L−1 in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). Both within-device and between-device reproducibility were lower than 9%, revealing satisfactory operational and fabrication reproducibility. Furthermore, the 3D-printed device was employed for the voltammetric determination of Colc in pharmaceutical tablets and in human urine with satisfactory results, justifying its suitability for low-cost routine analysis of Colc.

Cow milk is more allergenic than milk from other species, and therefore the adulteration of ewe or goat milk with cow milk can pose a serious threat to consumers. In this work, a silicon-based photonic immunosensor, which includes two U-shaped Mach–Zehnder Interferometers (MZIs), was employed for the detection of ewe and goat milk adulteration with cow milk through the immunochemical determination of the milk. The method was fast and sensitive with a detection limit of 0.04 μg/mL bovine k-casein (which corresponds to approximately 0.06% cow milk) in ewe or goat milk, respectively, and with a total assay time of 12 min.

This work describes a new programmable low-pressure chromatography method with post-column chemiluminescence (CL) detection for the rapid and cost-effective determination of four parabens in cosmetic products. Elution of the target analytes was achieved using a programmable mobile phase prepared by implementing a linear solvent gradient protocol based on appropriate flow rate modulation of 2 MilliGAT pumps. A 5 mm monolithic C18 column was used to separate the parabens. Post-column reaction of the eluted parabens with an acidic Ce(IV)-rhodamine 6G (Rho 6G) medium was carried out by introducing a flow stream of the reactants into the column eluate. The light generated from the CL reaction was detected with a flow-through CL detector fabricated in-house. The whole sequence of operations (including sample injection, generation of the mobile phase, addition of the post-column reaction reagents and signal acquisition) was under full computer control. Various operational parameters (the mobile phase composition and gradient conditions, the CL reagents’ concentrations and flow rates and the length of the reaction coil) were studied. The method was validated and applied to the analysis of various cosmetic products. The proposed approach allows sub-90 s separation of the four parabens and their determination with a limit of quantification of 0.2 μg L−1 with a sample throughput of 24 samples h−1. In addition, the method is economical, makes use of low-cost low-pressure components, is fully automated and produces a low amount of waste.

Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is detected in the milk of animals after ingestion of aflatoxin B1-contaminated food; since 2002, it has been categorized as a group I carcinogen. In this work, a silicon-based optoelectronic immunosensor for the detection of AFM1 in milk, chocolate milk, and yogurt has been developed. The immunosensor consists of ten Mach–Zehnder silicon nitride waveguide interferometers (MZIs) integrated on the same chip with the respective light sources, and an external spectrophotometer for transmission spectra collection. The sensing arm windows of MZIs are bio-functionalized after chip activation with aminosilane by spotting an AFM1 conjugate with bovine serum albumin. For AFM1 detection, a three-step competitive immunoassay is employed, including the primary reaction with a rabbit polyclonal anti-AFM1 antibody, followed by biotinylated donkey polyclonal anti-rabbit IgG antibody and streptavidin. The assay duration was 15 min with limits of detection of 0.005 ng/mL in both full-fat and chocolate milk, and 0.01 ng/mL in yogurt, which are lower than the maximum allowable concentration of 0.05 ng/mL set by the European Union. The assay is accurate (% recovery values 86.7–115) and repeatable (inter- and intra-assay variation coefficients

In this work, a 3D printed sensor modified with a water-stable complex of Fe(III) basic benzoate is presented for the voltammetric detection of glucose (GLU) in acidic epidermal skin conditions. The GLU sensor was produced by the drop-casting of Fe(III)-cluster ethanolic mixture on the surface of a 3D printed electrode fabricated by a carbon black loaded polylactic acid filament. The oxidation of GLU was electrocatalyzed by Fe(III), which was electrochemically generated in-situ by the Fe(III)-cluster precursor. The GLU determination was carried out by differential pulse voltammetry without the interference from common electroactive metabolites presented in sweat (such as urea, uric acid, and lactic acid), offering a limit of detection of 4.3 μmol L−1. The exceptional electrochemical performance of [Fe3O(PhCO2)6(H2O)3]∙PhCO2 combined with 3D printing technology forms an innovative and low-cost enzyme-free sensor suitable for noninvasive applications, opening the way for integrated 3D printed wearable biodevices.

This work reports the fabrication of a functional and fully integrated electrochemical device manufactured via a single-step 3D printing approach and its proof-of-concept applicability to electrochemical sensing. The device is fabricated entirely by 3D printing using a 3D printer equipped with two heads. It features three conductive polymer electrodes (working, counter, pseudo-reference) printed from a carbon-loaded polylactic acid (PLA) conductive filament and an electrode holder printed from a PLA non-conductive filament. 3D-printing enables the fabrication of electrochemical devices with significant advantages over other manufacturing approaches in terms of equipment size, capital and materials cost, flexibility in the design, construction and choice of materials, prototyping and manufacturing speed, between-device uniformity and design transferability. It is demonstrated that the device can be used for a variety of electrochemical sensing applications in a wide potential range, thus serving as a versatile electrochemical sensing platform. This work reports the fabrication of a new environmentally friendly three-electrode electrochemical sensor suitable for on-site voltammetric determination of two toxic emerging ‘technology-critical elements’ (TCEs), namely indium and thallium. The sensor is fully fabricated by injection-moulding and features three conductive polymer electrodes encased in a plastic holder; the reference electrode is further coated with AgCl or AgBr. The sensor is applied to the determination of trace In(III) and Tl(I) by anodic stripping voltammetry using a portable electrochemical set-up featuring a miniature smartphone-based potentiostat and a vibrating device for agitation. For the analysis, the sample containing the target metal ions is spiked with Bi(III) and a bismuth film is electroplated in situ forming an alloy with the accumulated target metals on the working electrode of the sensor; the metals are stripped off by applying a square-wave anodic voltametric scan. Potential interferences in the determination of In(III) and Tl(I) were alleviated by judicious selection of the solution chemistry. Limits of quantification for the target ions were in the low μg L−1 range and the sensors were applied to the analysis of lake water samples spiked with In(III) and Tl(I) with recoveries in the range of 95–103%.

This work reports the fabrication of integrated electrochemical fluidic paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) using a marker pen drawing and screen-printing. Electrodes were deposited on paper using screen-printing with conductive carbon ink. Then, the desired fluidic patterns were formed on the paper substrate by drawing with a commercial hydrophobic marker pen using an inexpensive computer-controlled x-y plotter. The working electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy. The analytical utility of the electrochemical PADs is demonstrated through electrochemical determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by anodic stripping voltammetry. For this purpose, the sample was mixed with a buffer solution and a Bi(III) solution, applied to the test zone of the PAD, the metals were preconcentrated as a bismuth alloy on the electrode surface and oxidized by applying an anodic potential scan. The proposed manufacturing approach enables the large-scale fabrication of fit-for-purpose disposable PADs at low cost which can be used for rapid on-site environmental monitoring.

This work reports the development and optimization of a rapid and low-cost pen-on-paper plotting approach for the fabrication of paper-based analytical devices (PADs) using commercial writing stationery. The desired fluidic patterns were drawn on the paper substrate with commercial marker pens using an inexpensive computer-controlled x–y plotter. For the fabrication of electrochemical PADs, electrodes were further deposited on the devices using a second x–y plotting step with commercial writing pencils. The effect of the fabrication parameters (type of paper, type of marker pen, type of pencil, plotting speed, number of passes, single- vs. double-sided plotting), the chemical resistance of the plotted devices to different solvents and the structural rigidity to multiple loading cycles were assessed. The analytical utility of these devices is demonstrated through application in optical sensing of total phenols using reflectance calorimetry and in electrochemical sensing of paracetamol and ascorbic acid. The proposed manufacturing approach is simple, low cost, flexible, rapid and fit-for-purpose and enables the fabrication of sub-“one-dollar” PADs with satisfactory mechanical and chemical resistance and good analytical performance.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin produced by certain Fusarium species and found in a high percentage of wheat and maize grains cultured worldwide. Although not so toxic as other mycotoxins, it exhibits both chronic and acute toxicity, and therefore methods for its fast and accurate on-site determination are highly desirable. In the current work, we employ an optical immunosensor based on White Light Reflectance Spectroscopy (WLRS) for the fast and sensitive immunochemical label-free determination of DON in wheat and maize samples. The assay is completed in 12 min and has a quantification limit of 2.5 ng/mL in buffer corresponding to 125 μg/kg in whole grain which is lower than the maximum allowable concentrations set by the regulatory authorities for grains intended for human consumption. Several extraction protocols have been compared, and the highest recovery (>90%) was achieved employing distilled water. In addition, identical calibration curves were received in buffer and wheat/maize extraction matrix providing the ability to analyze the grain samples using calibrators in buffer. Recoveries of DON from spiked wheat and maize grain samples ranged from 92.0(±4.0) to 105(±4.0)%. The analytical performance of the WLRS immunosensor, combined with the short analysis time and instrument portability, supports its potential for on-site determinations.

Flunitrazepam is an extremely potent benzodiazepine sedative which is associated with “drug-facilitated sexual assault” when administered within an alcoholic drink. This work describes a simple electrochemical method for on-site rapid detection of flunitrazepam in untreated spirits (whiskey, vodka and gin) using a single-use screen-printed sensor (featuring graphite working and auxiliary electrodes and an Ag/AgCl reference electrode) in a dry reagent format. Analysis was performed by placing a drop of sample on the sensor, which was previously coated with dry KCl, and recording selected reduction/oxidation peaks of the target compound in a cyclic voltammetry scan. The limit of quantification of flunitrazepam was at the sub-mg L−1 range. The between-sensor % relative standard deviation of the analytically useful reduction peak in a solution containing 11.4 mg L−1 flunitrazepam was 9.8% (n = 5). Quantification was performed using calibration curves constructed from pooled samples spiked with flunitrazepam with relative errors

This work describes a novel electrochemical sensor fabricated by an injection molding process. This device features a conductive polymer electrode encased in a plastic holder and electroplated in situ with a thin antimony film. The antimony film sensor was applied to the determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). The deposition of Sb on the sensor was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and microscopy. The experimental variables (concentration of the antimony plating solution, deposition potential and time, stripping waveform) were investigated, and the potential interferences were studied and addressed. The limits of detection were 0.95 μg L−1 for Pb(II) and 1.3 for Cd(II) (at 240 s of preconcentration) and the within-sensor percentage relative standard deviations were 4.2% and 4.9%, respectively, at the 25 μg L−1 level (n = 8). Finally, the sensor was applied to the determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) in a phosphorite sample and a lake water sample.

In this work, a microfabricated Au-film sensor was designed and fabricated for thevoltammmetric determination of Hg(II). The electrode was fabricated on a silicon chip with astandard microengineering approach utilizing photolithography for patterning the electrode shapeand sputtering for deposition of thin Cr and Au films on the surface of the sensors. The sensorswere used for the determination of trace Hg(II) with anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV): initiallyHg(II) in the sample was accumulated on the Au working electrode surface by reduction andformation of an Au(Hg) amalgam followed by oxidation of the preconcentrated metallic Hg using asquare wave voltammetric scan. The limit of detection was 1.5μgL−1 and the coefficient of variationof 10 consecutive measurements was 3.1%.

This work reviews the field of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) modified with “green” metals for electrochemical stripping analysis of toxic elements. Electrochemical stripping analysis has been established as a useful trace analysis technique offering many advantages compared to competing optical techniques. Although mercury has been the preferred electrode material for stripping analysis, the toxicity of mercury and the associated legal requirements in its use and disposal have prompted research towards the development of “green” metals as alternative electrode materials. When combined with the screen-printing technology, such environment-friendly metals can lead to disposable sensors for trace metal analysis with excellent operational characteristics. This review focuses on SPEs modified with Au, Bi, Sb, and Sn for stripping analysis of toxic elements. Different modification approaches (electroplating, bulk modification, use of metal precursors, microengineering techniques) are considered and representative applications are described. A developing related field, namely biosensing based on stripping analysis of metallic nanoprobe labels, is also briefly mentioned.
