A precise and practical power generation forecasting method for outdoor photovoltaic (PV) arrays and its performance evaluation are essential for advancements in solar power generation. Specifically, accurate temperature measurements of each of the PV modules in an array, the entire outdoor PV array, and the power generation system are crucial regardless of climatic and irradiance conditions. However, outdoor PV temperatures are often affected by environmental factors, such as wind direction, wind speed, solar irradiance, and outdoor air temperature fluctuations. Hence, the temperature data vary greatly depending on the measurement point of the module, which is affected by the above environmental factors. The variations of and uncertainties in temperature often extend over long arrays of PV modules common to large-scale PV systems. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a straightforward and reproducible inspection method to determine a single and robust representative PV module temperature for an array. In this study, we have established one such inspection method for outdoor PV arrays. It was observed that the temperature at the center of the array was closest to the average temperature regardless of the measurement period and climatic conditions; thus, it can be considered as the unbiased and robust representative temperature for the PV array. Moreover, lower irradiance conditions are better for accurate and repeatable PV module temperature measurements. The mean temperature differences of the PV array from its average measured at the center of the array were 0.2 °C for low irradiance and 0.5 °C for high irradiance. The temperature difference observed will have 0.1% to 0.2% impact on the power estimation for monitoring purposes.

In this article, we measured and estimated the outputs of car-mounted PV panels under actual driving conditions and different effective shading angles. On a sunny day, the performance ratio ( PR ) decreased to 0.99, despite the decrease in module temperature caused by the increased wind speed when driving. The PR decreased because of the effect of partial shading over the PV module. Public infrastructure could have led to dynamic partial shading passing across the PV module at high speeds. Furthermore, the effective shading angle being close to the sun's altitude could also have led to static partial shading. In contrast, on an overcast day the PR value was almost the same ( $>$ 1) under both driving and parking conditions; this was because of the low module temperature and the spectrum effect.

The concept of zero-energy building (ZEB) has attracted global attention in recent years as it involves offsetting the primary energy usage of a building on an annual base by the energy generated from renewable resources. The performance of wall-mounted photovoltaics (PV) for building applications has great potential for ZEB. In this study, we compared wall-mounted and common roof-mounted PV systems using a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. The wall-mounted PV system exhibited an unusual performance behavior depending on the season. Winter is a suitable season for energy production from the wall-mounted PV system because of the low solar altitude and resulting lower incident angle of the sun. However, the performance ratio (PR) had twin peaks throughout the day that could not be explained by the classical model that uses irradiance and temperature variation. In summer, there was less irradiance on the vertical wall and the PR had triple peaks that were also hard to explain using the conventional model. We established a detailed output power model of the wall-mounted PV using spectrum variation on a vertical plane. Our approach is the development of spectrum model that can be applied to all-climate and computed the performance variation according to the sun’s orientation and incident angle. Our model quantitatively explains unique seasonal and daily efficiency variations for the wall-mounted PV system (twin peaks in winter and triple peaks in summer). Our validated model can be utilized to map a suitable location for a wall-mounted PV system.

Thermoelectrics (TEs) are an important class of technology that harvest electric power directly from heat sources. When designing both high performance and environmentally friendly TE materials, the pseudo-cubic structure has great theoretical potential to maximize the dimensionless figure of merit ZT. The TE multinary single crystal with a pseudo-cubic structure paves a new path toward manipulating valley degeneracy and anisotropy with low thermal conductivity caused by short-range lattice distortion. Here, we report a record high ZT = 1.6 around 800 K realized in a totally environmentally benign p-type Na-doped Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) single crystal. The exceptional performance comes from a high power factor while maintaining intrinsically low thermal conductivity. The combination of the pseudo-cubic structure and intrinsic properties of the CZTS single crystal takes advantage of simple material tuning without complex techniques.

The photovoltaic performance of CdTe solar cells is mainly limited by low doping and short minority carrier lifetime. Group-V element doping and Se-alloying have a significant impact on tuning these fundamental CdTe properties. In this paper, we report the growth of p-type As-doped, Cd-rich CdTe1−xSex single crystals using metallic Cd as the solvent in the traveling-heater method. The structural and electrical properties of CdTe1−xSex are examined for different Se concentrations. CdTe1−xSex single crystals (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) with zincblende structure indicate homogeneous composition. The 1017 cm−3 As-doping activation efficiency can be maintained at close to 50% for x ≤ 0.2. Se alloying leads to bulk minority carrier lifetime exceeding 30 ns for samples doped near 1017 cm−3. These results help us to overcome the current roadblocks in device performance.

Three dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) are an important class of materials with applications in electronics, spintronics and quantum computing. With the recent development of truly bulk insulating 3D TIs, it has become possible to realize surface dominated phenomena in electrical transport measurements e.g. the quantum Hall (QH) effect of massless Dirac fermions in topological surface states (TSS). However, to realize more advanced devices and phenomena, there is a need for a platform to tune the TSS or modify them e.g. gap them by proximity with magnetic insulators, in a clean manner. Here we introduce van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures in the form of topological insulator/insulator/graphite to effectively control chemical potential of the TSS. We investigated the growth mechanism and the thermoelectric (TE) properties of the II-IV-V2 group chalcopyrite ZnSnSb2 with a pseudocubic structure, which is a key strategy for improving the TE performance by increasing the degeneracy at the valence band edge. The growth mechanism of ZnSnSb2 shows the peritectic reaction as: ZnSb + SnSb + liquid phase ↔ ZnSnSb2 for 320–360 °C. The ZnSnSb2 single phase was obtained from the starting composition of Zn:Sn:Sb = 1:5:2. The high-temperature TE properties were measured up to 573 K, and the thermal conductivity values were 1.5 times lower than the reported value, which was caused by enhanced phonon scattering by the off-stoichiometric composition. Consequently, the TE figure of merit for off-stoichiometric ZnSnSb2 reached 0.12 at 573 K, which is 1.4 times higher than that of the reported stoichiometric sample.

We examined the associations between urethral sensation and storage/voiding function in female patients with detrusor overactivity (DO) by measuring urethral current perception threshold (CPT).We retrospectively investigated the medical records of 27 consecutive patients with lower urinary tract symptoms who underwent cystometry, uroflowmetry (UFM), and urethral CPT tests from 2000 to 2015. Patients were classified into 2 groups: with/without DO. Seven DO-negative cases were selected as normal controls on cystometrogram (CMG) matching the inclusion criteria: bladder compliance ?12.5 mL/cmH2O, volume275 mL at first sensation, and no comorbidities possibly influencing micturition. Finally, 17 patients were included. Urethral CPT was evaluated with intraurethral square-wave impulses at 3 Hz to stimulate C-fibers. Urethral loss coefficient (LC), reflecting urethral resistance during voiding, was calculated by curve-fitting a mathematical model to a UFM waveform.Urge incontinence (UI) was observed in 7 DO-positive patients, but not in those with normal CMG. Urethral CPT and LC were significantly higher in patients with DO than in those with normal CMG. Median urethral CPT significantly increased in patients with both DO and UI than in those without these symptoms (p0.005). CPT values were correlated with the volume at first sensation (?=0.53, p0.05) and LC (?=0.59, p0.05). LC was not calculated in 3 cases due to poor curve-fitting.In females, urethral C-fiber afferents may become hyposensitive as the detrusor becomes overactive with UI in the storage phase. During voiding, C-fiber hyposensitivity may relate to increased functional resistance of the urethra to urine outflow.

A 28-year-old male visited a nearby hospital with chief complaint of bilateral back pain and fever. He was diagnosed with a right complex renal cyst (Bosniak classification, IIF) with a kidney stone and was referred to our hospital. We first suspected an incarcerated kidney stone and performed flexible transurethral lithotomy; however, his symptoms did not improve. Blood examination revealed prolonged APTT; subsequently, he was diagnosed with von Willebrand disease (VWD). Because he experienced pain due to the hemorrhagic renal cyst, we performed partial nephrectomy. Preoperatively, we supplemented the von Willebrand factor (VWF) based on the VWF activity in the patient. Although intraoperative bleeding was well controlled, he developed bleeding from pseudoaneurysms on the postoperative day (POD) 6. We immediately performed transarterial embolization along with VWF replenishment. VWF supplementation was discontinued on POD 14, and the patient was discharged on POD 23. Since then, he has not experienced a bleeding recurrence or pain. In patients with VWD, the perioperative administration of desmopressin or VWF is recommended. Although several reports showed that surgeries involving these treatments are safe, only three cases with VWD, including the present case where the patient underwent partial nephrectomy, have been reported. In the present case, postoperative bleeding occurred despite exhibiting adequate perioperative VWF activity. Thus, bleeding complications in patients with VWD undergoing partial nephrectomy must be considered and should be carefully followed up.

Group-V doping in Cd-rich composition shows the promise of maximizing hole concentration while preserving lifetime in CdTe solar cells. Previously we demonstrated CdTe with hole doping >1017cm−3 and bulk lifetime >30 ns. However, Hall effect measurements of samples under exposure to light suggest the formation of metastable light induced defects. Here, we report early attempts to isolate and characterize this defect by means of spectrophotometry. We observe a narrowing of optical bandgap for samples with hole concentration >1017cm−3 as well as band tailing. Isolation of energy threshold of the defect via photoconductivity measurements are ongoing.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVT) is rare but sometimes develops in association with malignant neoplasm. We report two cases of CVT that occurred during cisplatin-based chemotherapy for testicular cancer. A 46-year-old man with stage IIA non-seminomatous germ cell tumour was treated with conventional doses of etoposide and cisplatin (EP). On day 11 of the third treatment course, he developed a systemic seizure. Brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging could not detect the cause. Enhanced chest-pelvic CT revealed pelvic thrombosis. Administration of phenytoin for epilepsy of unknown cause and heparin for thrombosis was started. He had completed 4 courses of EP therapy without seizure recurrence. After re-evaluating the brain CT images retrospectively, we found high density of superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and strongly suspected CVT. Another patient was a 47-year-old man with stage IIIB seminomatous germ cell tumour treated with bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin (BEP) therapy. On day 11 of the second treatment course, he developed a systemic seizure. Brain CT revealed subarachnoid haemorrhage localised in the right parietal lobe. CT venography revealed a filling defect in the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). MR venography revealed a SSS stenosis. We diagnosed the cause of the seizure as CVT and started administration of anticoagulant therapy. After the thrombus had diminished, chemotherapy was restarted and another 2 courses of BEP therapy was completed.

We report the growth of p -type As-doped, Cd-rich CdTe single crystals using metallic Cd as the solvent in the traveling-heater method. We investigate the growth process from Cd solution in terms of the solid-liquid interface shape and the effects of As incorporation on p -type doping. The resulting CdTe crystals have Cd-rich composition which enhances p -type doping. The As doping efficacy was measured for As concentrations by the combination of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, capacitance-voltage measurements. The p -type doping concentration varied from 6 × 10 15 to 8 × 10 16 cm −3 with increasing As concentration, with an apparent doping limit just below 10 17 cm −3 .

Urolithiasis is a common urological problem, and its incidence has been increasing worldwide, including in Japan. Relationships between stone etiology and rise in ambient temperature have been reported, but it remains unclear how age and gender affect these relationships.A retrospective examination was conducted of the medical archives of 1005 patients (aged ≥15 years) with acute renal colic diagnosed with urolithiasis upon image examination who consecutively visited emergency departments in three hospitals. The patients were categorized into six groups according to age: younger than 30, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 years and older. The net difference and fold increase in the number of patients in summer (July to September) versus in winter (December to February) were calculated.Overall, the actual number of the patients varied according to the temperature rise throughout the year and among the age groups. Net increases in the number of patients were observed in all age groups for both genders, apart from 30-39-year-old women. The age group of 50-59 years considerably outnumbered all other groups. A significant statistical correlation was detected between the fold increase and male aging using Spearman's rank correlation analysis (ρ = 0.94, p = 0.017), but not in females (ρ = -0.03, p = 1).These results support a positive association between ambient temperature rise and increase in the incidence of renal colic due to urolithiasis in Japan, and indicate that aging and gender affect the association differently.

We investigate high-quality Na-doped Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) single crystals grown by using the traveling-heater method and the effect of Na doping on the fundamental properties of these crystals. Na-doped CZTS single crystals were obtained from Sn solution at growth temperatures of 850–900 °C and at speeds of 4 mm/day. The crystals have a kesterite structure, as determined by powder X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements. The Hall effect properties such as hole concentration, conductivity, and hole mobility are enhanced with increasing Na concentration. These results reveal that Na improves the electrical properties of CZTS.

Most excitatory synapses in the brain form on dendritic spines. Two-photon uncaging of glutamate is widely utilized to characterize the structural plasticity of dendritic spines in brain slice preparations in vitro. In the present study, glutamate uncaging was used to investigate spine plasticity, for the first time, in vivo. A caged glutamate compound was applied to the surface of the mouse visual cortex in vivo, revealing the successful induction of spine enlargement by repetitive two-photon uncaging in a magnesium free solution. Notably, this induction occurred in a smaller fraction of spines in the neocortex in vivo (22%) than in hippocampal slices (95%). Once induced, the time course and mean long-term enlargement amplitudes were similar to those found in hippocampal slices. However, low-frequency (1–2 Hz) glutamate uncaging in the presence of magnesium caused spine shrinkage in a similar fraction (35%) of spines as in hippocampal slices, though spread to neighboring spines occurred less frequently than it did in hippocampal slices. Thus, the structural plasticity may occur similarly in the neocortex in vivo as in hippocampal slices, although it happened less frequently in our experimental conditions.

Two-photon uncaging of glutamate is widely utilized to characterize structural plasticity in brain slice preparations in vitro. In this study, we investigated spine plasticity by using, for the first time, glutamate uncaging in the neocortex of adult mice in vivo. Spine enlargement was successfully induced in a smaller fraction of spines in the neocortex (22%) than in young hippocampal slices (95%), even under a low magnesium condition. Once induced, the time course and mean amplitudes of long-term enlargement were the same (81%) as those in vitro. However, low-frequency (1–2 Hz) glutamate uncaging caused spine shrinkage in a similar fraction (34%) of spines as in vitro, but spread to the neighboring spines less frequently than in vitro. Thus, we found that structural plasticity can occur similarly in the adult neocortex in vivo as in the hippocampus in vitro, although it happens stringently in a smaller subset of spines.

The radiation received by solar cells within photovoltaic modules is lower than that arriving at the module surface. One of the causes of this energy loss is soiling of the module surface. Therefore, the influence of dust adhesion on photovoltaic modules must be studied. In this study, we prepared two tracker systems: a new system and a typical system. During the night, the former can switch to a downward-facing standby state, while the latter assumes an upward-facing standby state. The soiling on the polymethylmethacrylate and glass set on the tracker systems with both standby states was evaluated for 20 months in Miyazaki, Japan. By adopting the tracker system with the downward-facing standby state, a direct transmittance that was more-than-5% higher than before was consistently obtained at 500 nm in both cases with polymethylmethacrylate and glass.

The phase equilibrium of the Ag2SnS3–ZnS pseudobinary system for the growth of Ag2ZnSnS4 (AZTS) crystals was investigated using the equilibration-quenching technique. The growth mechanism of AZTS follows the peritectic reaction liquid phase + ZnS phase ↔ AZTS phase, which occurs at a composition of ~20 mol% ZnS and a temperature of approximately 700 °C. The AZTS polycrystalline sample was obtained from the stoichiometric melt growth. The kesterite structure of the AZTS sample without secondary phases was identified by a combination of X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy measurements. The electron carrier concentration and conductivity, determined by the Hall effect measurement, were (3.0–6.3) × 1015 cm−3 and (5.6–9.2) × 10−4 S/cm, respectively. The slightly Zn-rich and S-poor composition led to n-type conduction in the AZTS because of the dominant Zn antisites on Ag (ZnAg) and S vacancy (VS) defects. Therefore, this study can make a significant contribution to the research and application of AZTS materials.

The chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) alloy system has received strong interest in recent years because of its potential for the development of high efficiency and low cost solar cells. The bandgap energy can be varied between 0.9 and 1.68 eV by composition ratio of In and Ga and the absorption coefficient is very high of abobe 105 cm-1. In our previous work1, I-III-VI2 chalcopyrite compound Cu(In0.2, Ga0.8)Se2 (CIGS) single crystal was successfully grown by traveling heater method (THM). The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern showed preferred orientations of (112), (220) and (312) planes, confirming the chalcopyrite structure. In Raman spectra, the A1 mode peaks expected for CIGS were observed, and no secondary phases were observed. The full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the X-ray rocking curve (XRC) for the (112) oriented CIGS single crystal is 103 arcsec. The good-quality single-phase CIGS single crystal can be obtained1). In this work, Ga-rich composition ratio CIGS single crystals could be also successfully grown by THM. At the ratio of Ga / (Ga + In) > 0.3, the CIGS changed from n-type conduction to p-type conduction. It was assumed that Se vacancies are reduced with increasing Ga ratio from the results of Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. 1)Nagaoka, et al., Renewable Energy 2015, 79, 127-130.

Depletion of natural resources and increasing global warming urge the researchers to develop new methods for energy harvesting. The global demand of alternative clean energy is becoming more and more drastic. The conversion of heat into useful electrical energy is an environmentally friendly and straight forward approach to solve the power problems. Thermoelectric materials have been considered to relieve the energy crisis based on the reversible heat and electricity conversion. We have focused on a new chalcogenide thermoelectric material Sr8Ti7S21 which low lattice thermal conductivity is expected because of a large unit cell (a = 11.5 Å, c = 47.7 Å). However, there are few reports on fundamental and thermoelectric properties. Here, we report growth of Sr8Ti7S21 crystal by solid-state reaction and characterization of its thermoelectric properties. Sr8Ti7S21 polycrystalline sample can be obtained from growth temperature of 900 ºC. The conduction type shows n-type, and Seebeck coefficient of 234 μV/K at 323 K. These results make Sr8Ti7S21 a promising new thermoelectric candidate.

Kesterite Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) is a sustainable material for thin-film photovoltaics with device efficiencies greater than 12% have been demonstrated. Despite similar crystal structure and polycrystalline film microstructures, there is widespread evidence for larger-amplitude potential and bandgap fluctuations in CZTS than in the analogous Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGSe) chalcopyrite material. This disorder is believed to account for a sizable part of the larger open-circuit voltage (VOC) deficit in CZTS devices, yet the detailed origins and length scales of these fluctuations have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we present a transmission electron microscopy study focusing on composition variation within bulk multicrystals of CZTS grown by the travelling heater method (THM). In these slow-cooled, solution grown crystals we find direct evidence for spatial composition fluctuations of amplitude

Composite pheochromocytoma (cPC) is extremely rare, arising in the adrenal medulla as a mixture of PC and other tumors of neural origin. We herein report on a case of adrenal incidentaloma post-operatively diagnosed as cPC with ganglioneuroblastoma (GNBL). The PC component had 7 points on the PASS, a Ki-67 index of 5.1%, a focal absence of sustentacular cells, and no genetic aberrations in succinate dehydrogenase subunit B. The GNBL component exhibited no N-myc amplification. Tumor cells of both components were stained positively for extracellular signal-regulated kinase 5 and ankyrin repeat domain 1. The aberrant activation of growth signaling may play a role in the marginal malignancy of cPC.

Acceptor doping CdTe with group-V elements is promising for increasing the power conversion efficiency of CdTe photovoltaic devices via an increased hole concentration and open circuit voltage (VOC). In past work, we have investigated doping with As in Cd-rich CdTe single crystals grown using the Cd-solvent traveling heater method we have developed. In this study, we compare the doping parameters and stability of hole concentration in the light and dark for P, As, and Sb dopants in crystals cooled very slowly from the growth temperature to approximate thermal equilibrium. In contrast to older reports of a high acceptor ionization energy for Sb, our temperature dependent Hall effect experiments reveal an acceptor ionization energy slightly above 90 meV for Sb doping in the mid 1016 cm−3 range. Room temperature hole concentrations above 1016 cm−3 are observed for P, As, and Sb with each dopant type exhibiting only small changes in hole concentrations over 2 years' time at room temperature. Crystals doped with P, As, or Sb exhibit increased conductivity after above-gap illumination, which decays over periods of minutes to hours depending on temperature. Analysis of the photoconductivity decay reveals a barrier attributed to hole capture of 190–280 meV for the series P, As, and Sb.

Despite numerous studies on three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs), the controlled growth of high quality (bulk-insulating and high mobility) TIs remains a challenging subject. This study investigates the role of growth methods on the synthesis of single crystal stoichiometric BiSbTeSe2 (BSTS). Three types of BSTS samples are prepared using three different methods, namely melting growth (MG), Bridgman growth (BG) and two-step melting-Bridgman growth (MBG). Our results show that the crystal quality of the BSTS depend strongly on the growth method. Crystal structure and composition analyses suggest a better homogeneity and highly-ordered crystal structure in BSTS grown by MBG method. This correlates well to sample electrical transport properties, where a substantial improvement in surface mobility is observed in MBG BSTS devices. The enhancement in crystal quality and mobility allow the observation of well-developed quantum Hall effect at low magnetic field.

We report on properties of As doped CdTe single crystals grown from Cd solvent by the travelling heater method.The activation energy of 70 meV derived from temperaturedependent Hall effect are consistent with As Te as the dominant acceptor. Bulk minority carrier lifetimes exceeding 20 ns are observed. We observe persistent photoconductivity, a hallmark of light-induced metastable configuration changes consistent with AX behavior. Cd-rich As-doepd CdTe single crystal was used as absorbing layer in solar cell, and this device can be performed with open-circuit voltage of 900 mV. next.

Calcineurin is required for long-term depression and activity-dependent spine shrinkage, and calcineurin mutations have been identified in patients with schizophrenia. Moreover, mice with conditional knockout of calcineurin B (CNB-KO) exhibit behavioral abnormalities suggestive of schizophrenia. Changes in the dendritic spines of these mice, however, have not been investigated. We therefore examined the dendritic spines of CNB-KO mice, and observed a significant reduction in small spines and an increase in large spines in the prefrontal and visual cortices. The effect of CNB-KO on the spine sizes was relatively moderate, possibly due to the presence of spontaneous fluctuations (dynamics) in the dendritic spines themselves. Thus, CNB-KO mice showed a spine phenotype similar to those recently reported in patients with schizophrenia.
