Free use and redistribution of data (i.e., Open Data) increases the reproducibility, transparency, and pace of aquatic sciences research. However, barriers to both data users and data providers may limit the adoption of Open Data practices. Here, we describe common Open Data challenges faced by data users and data providers within the aquatic sciences community (i.e., oceanography, limnology, hydrology, and others). These challenges were synthesized from literature, authors' experiences, and a broad survey of 174 data users and data providers across academia, government agencies, industry, and other sectors. Through this work, we identified seven main challenges: 1) metadata shortcomings, 2) variable data quality and reusability, 3) open data inaccessibility, 4) lack of standardization, 5) authorship and acknowledgement issues 6) lack of funding, and 7) unequal barriers around the globe. Our key recommendation is to improve resources to advance Open Data practices. This includes dedicated funds for capacity building, hiring and maintaining of skilled personnel, and robust digital infrastructures for preparation, storage, and long-term maintenance of Open Data. Further, to incentivize data sharing we reinforce the need for standardized best practices to handle data acknowledgement and citations for both data users and data providers. The frequency of news reporting about scientific topics is positively related to public interest as well as to public support for science funding and public policy change. This correlation can also have positive impacts on individual scientific careers depending on the chosen subject area of research. Analysis of a public news database shows the frequency and trends in news reporting of several popular research areas in the aquatic sciences. The frequency of appearance of topics in the news varies over more than three orders of magnitude. Temporal trends in reporting vary from steeply increasing (+25% per year) to declining (−4% per year). Suggestions are offered concerning the framing of research topics and overall better communication of research findings to journalists and the general public. Elevated concentrations of toxic cationic aluminum (Ali) are symptomatic of terrestrial and freshwater acidification and are particularly toxic to salmonid fish species such as Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Speciated metal samples are rarely included in standard water monitoring protocols, and therefore the processes affecting Ali dynamics in freshwater remain poorly understood. Previous analysis of Ali concentrations in Nova Scotia (Canada) rivers found that the majority of study rivers had concentrations exceeding the threshold for aquatic health, but a wide‐scale survey of Ali in Nova Scotia has not taken place since 2006 (Dennis, I. F., & Clair, T. A., 2012, Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 69(7), 1174–1183). The observed levels of dissolved aluminum in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) rivers of Atlantic Canada have potential serious and harmful effects for aquatic populations. We present the findings of the first large‐scale assessment of the Ali status of Nova Scotia rivers in 17 years; we measured Ali concentrations and other water chemistry parameters at 150 sites throughout the Southern Uplands region of Nova Scotia from 2015 to 2022. We found that Ali concentrations exceeded toxic thresholds at least once during the study period at 80% of the study sites and that Ali concentrations increased during the study period at all four large‐sample study sites. Modeling of relationships between Ali concentrations and other water chemistry parameters showed that the most important predictors of Ali are concentrations of the dissolved fractions of Al, iron, titanium, and calcium, as well as dissolved organic carbon and fluoride. We developed a fully Bayesian linear mixed model to predict Ali concentrations from a test data set within 15 μg/L. To achieve a holistic assessment of the water quality dynamics within the principal riverine systems of Yandu District, this study employed a comprehensive analysis of the Water Quality Index (WQI) derived from the monthly monitoring data collected at fifteen designated water quality monitoring stations across the main rivers from 2020 to 2022. The following results were obtained: Firstly, the annual average value of WQI during 2020–2022 was 58.14, and the water quality of Yandu District was considered as generally"moderate". Secondly, the WQI values in non-flood season were better than those in flood season and the WQI values in the northeast rivers were lower than other rivers. Thirdly, the main factors affecting water quality were NH3-N, TP, CODMn and DO. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the monitoring of water quality during the flood season and prioritize the treatment of the northern rivers in the Yandu District. The findings of this research could offer valuable insights for the evaluation, conservation, and management of water quality within analogous riverine systems, thereby contributing to the broader field of aquatic environmental science. As early-career professionals (ECPs) navigate their education and professional development in the aquatic sciences, many seek to build a network to help guide their entrance into the field. As influential organizations, scientific societies play a vital role through hosted conferences, where ECPs can meet and share ideas with others, and find mentors to facilitate their colleagues' journey within the profession. However, not all ECPs are the same, and those from marginalized backgrounds face unique challenges. Here, we provide a perspective on ways scientific societies can ensure all members are provided with equitable opportunity to discover, access, and build career-defining networks at conference events, including the critical role of mentors in navigating obstacles to success. Our recommendations originate from an early-career networking workshop in 2022 at a Canadian fisheries and aquatic sciences conference. The day-long hybrid event comprised interactive activities and discussions on how societies and their conferences can foster and promote inclusive networking for all, including suggestions on maximizing inclusivity for online attendees. This perspective serves as a call to action for scientific societies and senior-career professionals to meaningfully engage with ECPs and marginalized members to promote transformative science. Students and early career researchers/professionals (ECRs) must increasingly acquire a variety of skills and expand their collaborative networks to become more competitive as they apply for jobs and grants. Funding for skills training and overall availability of opportunities can, however, pose a challenge to this career plan. The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) is proud to support the professional development of member and non‐member students and ECRs by offering a myriad of skill‐building programs. These include opportunities to: receive mentoring, travel to ASLO events, expand networks, conduct outreach projects, research exchanges, and internships, better understand scientific publishing, and exercise leadership within the society. In addition, ASLO recognizes the contribution of member students and ECRs to their communities, field, and to the society. The management and conservation of fisheries and aquatic resources are inherently applied activities. Therefore, when knowledge generated from research and monitoring, or knowledge that is held by practitioners and other actors (e.g., Indigenous elders, fishers), fails to inform those applied decisions, the persistent gap between knowledge and action is reinforced (i.e., the knowledge–action gap). In the healthcare realm, there has been immense growth in implementation science over the past decade or so with a goal of understanding and bridging the gap between knowledge and action and delivering on evidence‐based decision making. Yet, within fisheries and aquatic sciences, the concept of implementation science has not received the same level of attention. We posit, therefore, that there is an urgent need to embrace implementation science to enhance fisheries and aquatic management and conservation. In this paper, we seek to describe what implementation science is and what it has to offer to the fisheries and aquatic science and management communities. For our context, we define implementation science as the scientific study of processes and approaches to promote the systematic uptake of research and monitoring findings and other evidence‐based practices into routine practice and decision making to improve the effectiveness of fisheries management and aquatic conservation. We explore various frameworks for implementation science and consider them in the context of fisheries and aquatic science. Although there are barriers and challenges to putting implementation science into practice (e.g., lack of capacity for such work, lack of time to engage in reflection, lack of funding), there is also much in the way of opportunity and several examples of where such efforts are already underway. We conclude by highlighting the research needs related to implementation science in the fisheries and aquatic science realm that span methodological approaches, albeit a common theme is the need to involve practitioners (and other relevant actors) in the research. By introducing the concept and discipline of implementation science to the fisheries and aquatic science community, our hope is that we will inspire individuals and organizations to learn more about how implementation science can help deliver on the promise of evidence‐based management and decision making and narrow the gap between research and practice. The COVID‐19 pandemic drastically altered human social systems. To better understand ramifications of the pandemic for aquatic scientists, we assessed perceptions of mentorship within the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, focusing on impacts felt during the pandemic. We also evaluated current preferences and practices (e.g., valued traits, network composition, communication tools) related to mentoring, as a way of gauging change within the community and informing ongoing or future resilience and recovery efforts. In surveying this group, we found the largest pandemic related professional development gaps to be lost opportunities for mentoring, the absence of in‐person meetings, and missed collegial/collaborative interactions. We also assessed which mentorship characteristics were highly valued and found that, "communicative" was the most consistently valued characteristic. Finally, we assessed mentor network composition and code of conduct use. Findings show a limited range of disciplines within most mentees' networks, suggesting lack of access to mentors in outside fields or disciplines, and widespread valuation of codes of conduct but limited implementation. We advocate for mentoring practices that foster personal connections, expand networks, and develop clear plans for mentoring relationships, as a path toward general improvement and resilience within mentoring networks in the face of disruption. The article discusses the results of a survey conducted by the Study Group on Generating Recommendations to Encourage Environmentally-Responsible Networking (SG-GREEN) within the PICES organization. The survey aimed to gather information on members' interest in changing the way they meet, purchasing carbon credits, participating in beach clean-ups, and other environmental activities. The survey found that there was overwhelming interest in changing the way business is conducted within the organization. Fisheries science and practice are challenging and require learning, thinking, and sharing across boundaries. The idea of boundary crossing can be described as some form of multiple disciplinarity (e.g. interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity), yet that inherently implies that the boundaries crossed are purely disciplinary in nature. After working across various other boundaries (i.e. realms, regions, disciplines, sectors, domains, and knowledge systems) for most of our educational journeys and professional careers, we reflect on our lived experiences with a focus on identifying the benefits and challenges of engaging in different types of boundary crossing. We submit that our personal and professional lives have been enriched by stepping outside of our immediate comfort zones and expertise (i.e. fish ecology) and engaging in active listening and learning with colleagues in other disciplines (i.e. various social sciences) and with stakeholders and policymakers. We have learned much from working across boundaries and encourage others, especially early career professionals, to do the same. What may superficially appear to be a bridge too far may in fact provide novel ways of thinking about a given issue or topic that generates actionable science for sustainable fisheries management and conservation. Many of the projects that we consider to be our greatest successes represent ones that involved boundary crossing, examples of which we provide in this essay. There is a need to prepare the next generation of problem solvers for engaging in boundary crossing and celebrating examples of where such efforts have led to meaningful advances in fisheries science and practice. Ensuring that institutional and cultural barriers that may constrain boundary crossing are addressed while also supporting those doing such work will be key to address the many fisheries and aquatic science challenges of today and tomorrow in both marine and freshwater systems. Publishing scientific work is as important as conducting research. The rise of online Open Access (OA) publications that are immediately available to readers everywhere free of charge has transformed the publishing landscape in the past decades. I offer a translation of this article into Brazilian Portuguese as my own attempt to improve access to scientific content (Supplementary Information, SI). In this article, I introduce OA publishing in the context of the aquatic sciences. More specifically, I talk about how OA came to be, the different types of OA publications and copyright licenses, the benefits and pitfalls of OA publishing, and how to pay for gold OA publications. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been widely criticized by the aquatic science community for poorly aligned approaches when selecting endpoints and collecting data during the baseline, predictive modeling, and postdevelopment monitoring phases. If these critical phases of the EIA process are not aligned properly, it can be difficult to evaluate the presence of postdevelopment effects. Examples of the misalignment of these phases include baseline studies failing to measure indicators that are monitored postdevelopment; predictive assessments that do not quantitatively predict conditions or potential impacts postdevelopment; and the failure to identify relevant indicators that may detect effects postdevelopment. For aquatic assessments, understanding how to protect critical ecosystem attributes to satisfy regulatory concerns could help to better align aquatic science monitoring activities across EIA phases. In this article we investigate recent Canadian hydroelectric dam EIAs to evaluate how well recent assessment approaches are meeting these necessary conditions of good aquatic EIA practice through the lens of ecosystem services from a fish's perspective. We found that larger facilities generally had baseline studies and modeling that better supported postdevelopment monitoring, but improvements in structure, linkages, and expectations would better align EIA phases in a manner that would improve assessments and environmental protection. This article discusses the breeding behavior of Canyon treefrogs in relation to spring floods and warming nights in the southwestern United States. Summary: Pakistan, among the top five most water-stressed nations globally, grapples with water scarcity owing to inadequate treatment infrastructure and groundwater overextraction. We demonstrate a successful nature-based closed-loop system to treat wastewater from urban vehicle-washing facilities, previously reliant on groundwater. An eco-friendly integrated system containing floating treatment wetlands (FTWs), subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSF-CWs), and sand filtration (SF) was designed and installed at three vehicle-washing facilities for wastewater treatment and reuse in a loop. While the system is still operational after years, a consistent and significant reduction in water quality indicators is recorded, successfully meeting the national environmental quality standards of Pakistan. By reducing per unit water treatment costs to as low as $0.0163/m³ and achieving payback periods under a year, the embrace of these closed-loop strategies vividly underscores the imperative of transitioning to a circular economy in the domains of wastewater treatment and resource conservation.

Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) concentrations are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1; available at 10.1594/PANGAEA.964012, Lønborg et al., 2023) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g. chlorophyll a , inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations of concentrations from all continents. However, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62 338 data points for DOC, 20 356 for DON, and 13 533 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average ± standard deviation (SD): 182±314 µmolCL-1 ; median: 103 µmolCL-1) is 13-fold higher than the average coastal DON concentration (13.6±30.4 µmolNL-1 ; median: 8.0 µmolNL-1), which is itself 39-fold higher than the average coastal DOP concentration (0.34±1.11 µmolPL-1 ; median: 0.18 µmolPL-1). This dataset will be useful for identifying global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and will help facilitate the reuse of DOC, DON, and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterizing local biogeochemical processes; closing nutrient budgets; estimating carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous pools; and establishing a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters. The ASLO Multicultural Program (ASLOMP) began in 1990 to promote diversity in the aquatic sciences. It involves brining diverse undergraduate and graduate students to annual ASLO meetings. The students participate in special programing that includes an opening dinner and keynote speaker, a student symposium where they present their work, a field trip, and work with meeting mentors. Between 1990 and 2023, 1443 different students participated in ASLOMP. They were a diverse lot; 43.0% African American, 33.0% Hispanic, 6.4% white, 6.4% Native American, 5.3% Pacific Islander, 3.5% Asian, and 2.4% other. Participants have gone on to be the first persons of color to serve on the ASLO Board of Directors and to assume other leadership positions in the society. Many former ASLOMP participants have gone on for advanced degrees and often return as mentors in the program. The ASLOMP model has been adopted by various other scientific societies including the Ecological Society of America (Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability ‐ SEEDS), the Society of Wetland Scientists, Sigma Xi, and the Coastal and Estuarine and Research Federation. The 3rd Aquatic Ecosystem Modeling Network—Junior (AEMON‐J) Hacking Limnology Workshop and 4th Virtual Summit: Incorporating Data Science and Open Science in the Aquatic Sciences (DSOS) took place in July 2023. The events aimed to bring together aquatic science practitioners and enthusiasts to exchange knowledge and experiences in the field of data science, open science, remote sensing, and the aquatic sciences. The workshops focused on introducing early career scientists to open datasets and coding skills, while the summit featured speakers presenting on various topics related to data science and open science in the aquatic sciences. The events were accessible to a global audience, with materials and recordings made freely available for asynchronous viewing. The organizers also emphasized diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the community. The events received positive feedback, but synchronous engagement was lower compared to previous years, possibly due to the decline of COVID-19 restrictions and the increase in face-to-face conferences. The organizers are considering a balance between in-person and virtual engagement for future events and are open to collaborations and self-organized workshops. [Extracted from the article]

The extent of littoral influence on lake gas dynamics remains debated in the aquatic science community due to the lack of direct quantification of lateral gas transport. The prevalent assumption of diffusive horizontal transport in gas budgets fails to explain anomalies observed in pelagic gas concentrations. Here, we demonstrate through high-frequency measurements in a eutrophic lake that daily convective horizontal circulation generates littoral-pelagic advective gas fluxes one order of magnitude larger than typical horizontal fluxes used in gas budgets. These lateral fluxes are sufficient to redistribute gases at the basin-scale and generate concentration anomalies reported in other lakes. Our observations also contrast the hypothesis of pure, nocturnal littoral-to-pelagic exchange by showing that convective circulation transports gases such as oxygen and methane toward both the pelagic and littoral zones during the daytime. This study challenges the traditional pelagic-centered models of aquatic systems by showing that convective circulation represents a fundamental lateral transport mechanism to be integrated into gas budgets. This document is the report of the Intersessional Meeting of the Aquaculture and Fishery Subject Groups of the Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP) which was held in hybrid form in London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and online, 28–30 June 2023. Fifteen CWP member organizations participated in the meeting and another three regional organizations participated as observer. In addition, FAO invited the World Bank to the meeting. The Intersessional Meeting (CWP-IS) reviewed progress and provided guidance on work conducted since the Twenty-Seventh Session of CWP in 2022 including revisions to the CWP Handbook of Fishery Statistics and CWP website and the work of seven ad hoc Task Groups which is related to: catch and fishing effort concepts, reference harmonization for capture fishery and aquaculture statistics including emerging needs for international statistical standards, geospatial matters, workflow and data confidentiality, small-scale fisheries and development to the aquaculture section of the CWP Handbook. CWP-IS also discussed revisions to the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System (ASFIS) List of Species for Fishery Statistics and the International Standard Statistical Classification of Fishing Gear (ISSCFG), as well as improvements to the collection of employment statistics, recent statistical activities between FAO and the World Bank and future activities and directions for CWP. Studies devised through the fusion of cleaning and environmental sciences can be summarized as follows: new cleaning kinetics applying a probability density function and a surface chemical approach to the aquatic toxicity of surfactants. Cleaning power analysis using the probability density functional method combines conventional cleaning kinetics using a first-order reaction equation with a risk analysis method using a probability density function. It is possible to analyze the cleaning mechanism from the obtained parameter values. It is also possible to determine whether the interaction between two different cleaning elements corresponds to a synergistic, additive, or offsetting effect. Studies on the aquatic toxicity of surfactants have focused on the surface tension at which surfactants exhibit toxicity, changes in toxicity due to water quality, and biodegradation, and the presence of adsorbed substances have been identified. The COVID-19 pandemic affected nearly all strata of life, including scientific activities. Implementation of nationwide lockdowns, closures of universities, and other measures significantly limiting social mobility precluded field and laboratory research from being pursued at a pre-pandemic pace. On the other hand, working from home could translate into higher productivity of researchers in terms of publication output, ultimately affecting the journals' metrics. This effect has been well evidenced in the biomedical field, but whether it also occurred in aquatic sciences has not been explored. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze and compare various metrics of journals classified in the Scopus evaluations in 2019 (encompassing 2016–2019, the pre-pandemic period) and 2022 (covering 2019–2022, the pandemic period) within three subjects: aquatic science, oceanography, and water science and technology. In general, the number of journals classified into the considered categories increased in 2022 by 12%, and the majority (78%) experienced an increase in the CiteScore metric. The total published articles and received citations also significantly increased in 2022 by 17.5% and 63.5%, respectively, and were even higher in the case of open access journals—69% and 145%, respectively. The overall share of cited articles in the considered period was higher by 5% than in the 2019 Scopus evaluation and by 7% in the case of open access periodicals. However, source normalized impact per paper (SNIP) and the SCImago journal rank (SJR) values decreased by 7% and 8%, respectively. The highest share of citations was generated by Water Research, Water, and the Journal of Hydrology, and the highest number of articles was published by Water, Frontiers in Marine Science, and Desalination and Water Treatment. Only five of the COVID-19-related papers published in journals with the highest CiteScore and total number of citations received more than 200 citations, but their contribution to citations received by the journals was not high. In summary, the present study's findings indicate the high potential of the field dedicated to water sciences to adapt in a period challenged by an infectious disease pandemic. Originally developed for terrestrial science and applications, the US Geological Survey Landsat surface reflectance (SR) archive spanning ~ 40 yr of observations has been increasingly utilized in large‐scale water‐quality studies. These products, however, have not been rigorously validated using in situ measured reflectance. This letter quantifies and demonstrates the quality of the SR products by harnessing a sizeable global dataset (N = 1100). We found that the Landsat 8/9 SR in the green and red bands marginally meet the targeted accuracy requirements (30%), whereas the uncertainties in the blue and coastal‐aerosol bands ranged from 48% to 110%. We further observed > +25% biases in the visible bands of Landsat 5/7 SR, which can introduce an apparent downward trend when applied in time‐series analyses combined with Landsat 8/9. Users must exercise caution when using this archive for trend analyses, and progress in atmospheric correction is required to foster advanced applications of the Landsat archive for aquatic science. This article examines the impact of climate change on the mixing processes in Babitonga Bay, Brazil. The study uses a hydrodynamic model to simulate the bay's hydrodynamics and assess water renewal rates and water age. The results indicate that sea level rise is reducing water renewal capacity and increasing water age, particularly in certain critical regions of the bay. In an attempt to address an increased need for a STEM-literate workforce and arrest declining Science engagement in high school, I led the development and delivery of a Project-Based Learning approach to pedagogy. It was aimed at increasing student engagement in Science in the junior years, leading to an increase in Senior Science enrolments and tertiary enrolment in STEM fields. Students were engaged in hands-on, collaborative projects that were interesting, relevant and engaging. Student achievement levels improved, behaviour incidents decreased and more students enrolled in Senior Sciences: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Aquatic Practices and Science in Practice. The nitrate ion (NO3−) is a typical pollutant in environmental samples, posing a threat to the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Therefore, rapid and accurate detection of NO3− is crucial for both the aquatic sciences and government regulations. Here we report the fabrication of an amino-functionalized, vertically ordered mesoporous silica film (NH2-VMSF) confining localized copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) for the electrochemical detection of NO3−. NH2-VMSF-carrying amino groups possess an ordered perpendicular nanochannel structure and ultrasmall nanopores, enabling the confined growth of CuNPs through the electrodeposition method. The resulting CuNPs/NH2-VMSF-modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode (CuNPs/NH2-VMSF/ITO) combines the electrocatalytic reduction ability of CuNPs and the electrostatic attraction capacity of NH2-VMSF towards NO3−. Thus, it is a rapid and sensitive electrochemical method for the determination of NO3− with a wide linear detection range of 5.0–1000 μM and a low detection limit of 2.3 μM. Direct electrochemical detection of NO3− in water samples (tap water, lake water, seawater, and rainwater) with acceptable recoveries ranging from 97.8% to 109% was performed, demonstrating that the proposed CuNPs/NH2-VMSF/ITO sensor has excellent reproducibility, regeneration, and anti-interference abilities. The melting of glaciers has led to an unprecedented increase in the number and size of glacial lakes, particularly in the Himalayan region. A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) is a natural hazard in which water from a glacial or glacier-fed lake is swiftly discharged. GLOFs can significantly harm life, infrastructure, and settlements located downstream, and can cause considerable ecological, economic, and social impacts. Based on a dam breach model, BREACH, and a hydrodynamic model, HEC-RAS, we examined the potential consequences of a GLOF originating from the Thorthomi glacial lake, located within the Phochhu River Basin, one of Bhutan's largest and rapidly expanding glacial lakes. Our analysis revealed that, following a breach, the Thorthomi glacial lake will likely generate a peak flow of 16,360 m³ s-1 within four hours. Such discharge could potentially cause considerable damage, with an estimated 245 hectares of agricultural land and over 1,277 buildings at risk for inundation. Our results emphasize an urgent need for understanding and preparing for the potential consequences of a GLOF from Thorthomi Lake in order to mitigate ecological, economic, and social impacts on downstream areas. Within the next decade, NASA plans to launch three new missions with imaging spectrometers for aquatic science and applications: Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) in 2024, Geostationary Littoral Imaging Radiometer (GLIMR) in 2026, and Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) in 2028. Taken together, these missions will evaluate long‐term trends in phytoplankton biomass linked to climate change, and provide new spectral capabilities to assess aquatic biogeochemistry, biophysics, and habitats. Hyperspectral measurements of ocean color, paired with advanced retrieval algorithms, can provide new information on phytoplankton community composition and water quality. We compare the mission architecture and sensor characteristics to identify the synergistic opportunities to merge algorithms, field data, and calibration and validation techniques. Each mission has unique temporal and spatial characteristics to monitor the aquatic transitions from watershed to open ocean ecosystems. SBG provides observations at high spatial scales to monitor emergent, floating, submerged, and benthic habitats from inland to coastal waters. With global daily coverage, PACE can track the fate of material as it meanders offshore and provides an enhanced context for phytoplankton diversity and global biogeochemical cycling. GLIMR is optimized to resolve temporal processes that give rise to aquatic rates and fluxes including phytoplankton growth rates, physiology, and episodic events such as storms. Applications with high spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution from these NASA missions include assessing carbon dynamics and biogeochemical cycling across the land‐ocean continuum, harmful algal blooms, and oil spills. The measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1 ; available at https://figshare.com/s/512289eb43c4f8e8eaef) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP collected in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g., Chlorophyll-a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g., dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations from all continents however, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in coastal water DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62339 data points for DOC, 20360 for DON and 13440 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average (standard deviation; SD): 182 (314) µmol C L-1; median: 103 µmol C L-1), is 13-fold greater than the average coastal DON concentrations (average (SD): 13.6 (30.4) µmol N L-1; median: 8.0 µmol N L-1), which was itself 39-fold greater than the average coastal DOP concentrations (average (SD): 0.34 ± 1.11 µmol P L-1; median: 0.18 µmol P L-1). This dataset will be useful to identify global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and to facilitate reuse of DOC, DON and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterising local biogeochemical processes, closing nutrient budgets, estimating carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous pools, as well as identifying a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters.
