Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is characterised by, among others, subjectively reported inter-identity amnesia, reflecting compromised information transfer between dissociative identity states. Studies have found conflicting results regarding memory transfer between dissociative identity states. Here, we investigated inter-identity amnesia in individuals with DID using self-relevant, subject specific stimuli, and behavioural and neural measures. Data of 46 matched participants were included; 14 individuals with DID in a trauma-avoidant state, 16 trauma-avoiding DID simulators, and 16 healthy controls. Reaction times and neural activation patterns related to three types of subject specific words were acquired and statistically analysed, namely non-self-relevant trauma-related words (NSt), self-relevant trauma-related words from a trauma-avoidant identity state (St), and trauma-related words from a trauma-related identity state (XSt). We found no differences in reaction times between XSt and St words and faster reaction times for XSt over NSt. Reaction times of the diagnosed DID group were the longest. Increased brain activation to XSt words was found in the frontal and parietal regions, while decreased brain activity was found in the anterior cingulate cortex in the diagnosed DID group. The current study reproduces and amalgamates previous behavioural reports as well as brain activation patterns. Our finding of increased cognitive control over self-relevant trauma-related knowledge processing has important clinical implications and calls for the redefinition of "inter-identity amnesia" to "inter-identity avoidance". Little is known about the role African women played at the end of the nineteenth century in the Iberian Peninsula. This paper describes the reconstruction of the first studied late modern African diaspora, settled in Catalonia in the 1880s, with its precedent, the very rich Fernandino woman of Spanish Guinea, Amelia Barleycorn. Historical reconstruction shows that this elite was highly visible with the Catalan bourgeoisie in the first half of the twentieth century in Barcelona, later resulting in having complete anonymity at the end of the century. This was evidenced by the neglect observed in the racist attack suffered by the descendant of two illustrious Fernandino families in 1992. The article reviews how the Fernandino community broke colonial moulds, as well as putting strain on the Iberian seams of race, class and sex from the end of the nineteenth century, and reflects on the Catalan and Spanish state promoted amnesia. The advancements in deep learning have significantly enhanced the capability of image generation models to produce images aligned with human intentions. However, training and adapting these models to new data and tasks remain challenging because of their complexity and the risk of catastrophic forgetting. This study proposes a method for addressing these challenges involving the application of class-replacement techniques within a continual learning framework. This method utilizes selective amnesia (SA) to efficiently replace existing classes with new ones while retaining crucial information. This approach improves the model's adaptability to evolving data environments while preventing the loss of past information. We conducted a detailed evaluation of class-replacement techniques, examining their impact on the "class incremental learning" performance of models and exploring their applicability in various scenarios. The experimental results demonstrated that our proposed method could enhance the learning efficiency and long-term performance of image generation models. Background: As one major symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD), anterograde amnesia describes patients with an inability in new memory formation. The crucial role of the entorhinal cortex in forming new memories has been well established, and the neuropeptide cholecystokinin (CCK) is reported to be released from the entorhinal cortex to enable neocortical associated memory and long-term potentiation. Though several studies reveal that the entorhinal cortex and CCK are related to AD, it is less well studied. It is unclear whether CCK is a good biomarker or further a great drug candidate for AD. Methods: mRNA expressions of CCK and CCK-B receptor (CCKBR) were examined in two mouse models, 3xTg AD and CCK knock-out (CCK−/−) mice. Animals' cognition was investigated with Morris water maze, novel object recognition test and neuroplasticity with in-vitro electrophysiological recording. Drugs were given intraperitoneally to animals to investigate the rescue effects on cognitive deficits, or applied to brain slices directly to explore the influence in inducement of long-term potentiation. Results: Aged 3xTg AD mice exhibited reduced CCK mRNA expression in the entorhinal cortex but reduced CCKBR expression in the neocortex and hippocampus, and impaired cognition and neuroplasticity comparable with CCK−/− mice. Importantly, the animals displayed improved performance and enhanced long-term potentiation after the treatment of CCKBR agonists. Conclusions: Here we provide more evidence to support the role of CCK in learning and memory and its potential to treat AD. We elaborated on the rescue effect of a promising novel drug, HT-267, on aged 3xTg AD mice. Decades of studies robustly support a critical role for the hippocampus in spatial memory across a wide range of species. Hippocampal damage produces clear and consistent deficits in allocentric spatial memory that requires navigating through space in rodents, non‐human primates, and humans. By contrast, damage to the hippocampus spares performance in most non‐navigational spatial memory tasks—which can typically be resolved using egocentric cues. We previously found that transient inactivation of the hippocampus impairs performance in the Hamilton Search Task (HST), a self‐ordered non‐navigational spatial search task. A key question, however, still needs to be addressed. Acute, reversible inactivation of the hippocampus may have resulted in an impairment in the HST because this approach does not allow for neuroplastic compensation, may prevent the development of an alternative learning strategy, and/or may produce network‐based effects that disrupt performance. We compared learning and performance on the HST in male rhesus macaques (six unoperated control animals and six animals that underwent excitotoxic lesions of the hippocampus). We found a significant impairment in animals with hippocampal lesions. While control animals improved in performance over the course of 45 days of training, performance in animals with hippocampal lesions remained at chance levels. The HST thus represents a sensitive assay for probing the integrity of the hippocampus in non‐human primates. These data provide evidence demonstrating that the hippocampus is critical for this type of non‐navigational spatial memory, and help to reconcile the many null findings previously reported. The two most common paradigms for testing recognition memory in nonhuman primates provide conflicting evidence about its underlying neurobiology. The most widely used paradigm, preferential viewing, likely confounds memory with nonmnemonic processes like novelty processing, habituation, motivation, and others. Despite widespread use, preferential viewing correlates poorly with more traditional measures of explicit recognition. We propose that memory paradigms that require explicit choices should be preferred by researchers and weighted more heavily by readers. The two tests most widely used in nonhuman primates to assess the neurobiology of recognition memory produce conflicting results. Preferential viewing tests (e.g., visual paired comparison) produce robust impairments following hippocampal lesions, whereas matching tests (e.g., delayed nonmatching-to-sample) often show complete sparing. Here, we review the data, the proposed explanations for this discrepancy, and then critically evaluate those explanations. The most likely explanation is that preferential viewing tests are not a process-pure assessment of recognition memory, but also test elements of novelty-seeking, habituation, and motivation. These confounds likely explain the conflicting results. Thus, we propose that memory researchers should prefer explicit matching tests and readers interested in the neural substrates of recognition memory should give explicit matching tests greater interpretive weight. East Africa presents striking examples of the different ways in which states may seek to promote forgetting through control or suppression of memories of mass violence. In Rwanda, the 1994 genocide is intensively memorialized, yet violence committed by the ruling party is not part of the official history. In Burundi, a power-sharing deal to end a civil war led to the erasure of memory through deliberate neglect. In Kenya, sites of terrorist violence have been fortified and reopened in the name of resilience—a form of triumphalist amnesia. Background: Neurodegenerative diseases induce amnesia, and effective treatment is still elusive. Aims and Objectives: The present study highlights the ameliorating effects of Manasa Mitra Vatakam (MMV) using behavioral parameters on scopolamine-induced memory loss in female Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: MMV was compared with DPZ as a standard in the present study to determine the behavioral parameters through elevated plus maze (Hebb William maze/rectangular maze)and locomotor activity in scopolamineinduced memory loss in female Wistar rats. Results and Discussion: The results of the study illustrate the effectiveness of MMV in reversing memory dysfunction and memory-enhancing effects. Attribute amnesia, a phenomenon in which participants fail to report a just-attended attribute in a surprise test, reflects the importance of expectation in determining memory for attended information. To investigate how expectations arise in the context of attribute amnesia, the present study examined whether and how different response histories, independently of task instruction, can shape expectation, thereby driving or eliminating attribute amnesia. Participants were assigned to three groups and completed variations of the attribute amnesia task, where they were initially instructed to encode both target location and identity. Two groups of participants were probed four times on target identity before a critical identity probe, in one case intermittently while in the other case repeatedly during the first few trials. Another group of participants was never probed on identity until the critical trial, which occurred on the 370th trial (after many location probes). The results showed that, in spite of common task instruction, performance on the critical trial depended strongly on response history, with initial identity probes providing some protection against attribute amnesia and intermittent probes completely eliminating it. Research on the role of the hippocampus in memory acquisition has generally focused on active learning. But to understand memory, it is at least as important to understand processes that happen offline, during both wake and sleep. In a study of patients with amnesia, we previously demonstrated that although a functional hippocampus is not necessary for the acquisition of procedural motor memory during training session, it is required for its offline consolidation during sleep. Here, we investigated whether an intact hippocampus is also required for the offline consolidation of procedural motor memory while awake. Patients with amnesia due to hippocampal damage (n = 4, all male) and demographically matched controls (n = 10, 8males) trained on the finger tapping motor sequence task. Learning was measured as gains in typing speed and was divided into online (during task execution) and offline (during interleaved 30 s breaks) components. Amnesic patients and controls showed comparable total learning, but differed in the pattern of performance improvement. Unlike younger adults, who gain speed across breaks, both groups gained speed only while typing. Only controls retained these gains over the breaks; amnesic patients slowed down and compensated for these losses during subsequent typing. In summary, unlike their peers, whose motor performance remained stable across brief breaks in typing, amnesic patients showed evidence of impaired access to motor procedural memory. We conclude that in addition to being necessary for the offline consolidation of motor memories during sleep, the hippocampus maintains access to motor memory across brief offline periods during wake. Measles is a vaccine-preventable illness. Nevertheless, in recent years, measles is still endemic and epidemic in both the developed world and the developing world. The public perception of measles in the past was that it was not a big deal. However, measles is associated with a number of complications which can be places in three categories which are: acute(diarrhea, otitis media, pneumonia, encephalitis, seizures, and death) and delayed-subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) and post-measles immune amnesia. Contrary to the beliefs of the anti-vaccine lobby, measles is bad. In acute measles, the death rate is 1–3 per 1000 and the risk of encephalitis is 1 per 1000. Relatively recent investigations indicate that SSPE is considerably more common than previously believed. The worldwide contribution of post-measles immune amnesia to morbidity and mortality is likely to be huge. In exposure situations, two doses of measles vaccine will prevent 99% of cases. Presently in the United States, the first dose is given at 12 through 15 months of age. The second dose is most often administered at 4 through 6 years of age. In my opinion, the second dose of measles vaccine should be given 4–6 weeks after the first dose rather than at 4–6 years of age. Learning regularities in the environment is a fundament of human cognition, which is supported by a network of brain regions that include the hippocampus. In two experiments, we assessed the effects of selective bilateral damage to human hippocampal subregion CA3, which was associated with autobiographical episodic amnesia extending ~50 years prior to the damage, on the ability to recognize complex, deterministic event sequences presented either in a spatial or a non-spatial configuration. In contrast to findings from related paradigms, modalities, and homologue species, hippocampal damage did not preclude recognition memory for an event sequence studied and tested at four spatial locations, whereas recognition memory for an event sequence presented at a single location was at chance. In two additional experiments, recognition memory for novel single-items was intact, whereas the ability to recognize novel single-items in a different location from that presented at study was at chance. The results are at variance with a general role of the hippocampus in the learning and recognition of complex event sequences based on non-adjacent spatial and temporal dependencies. Aim: According to classical Unani literature, the multicomponent traditional Unani formulation majoon‐e‐nisyan is used to treat amnesia and cognitive impairment. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate majoon‐e‐nisyan's effectiveness in improving cognitive function. Methods: Majoon‐e‐Nisyan was prepared as per traditional method. The cognitive function was evaluated using the passive avoidance test and the water maze experiment in mice. The effectiveness of the test drug was compared to that of the positive control drug, piracetam. Results: Passive avoidance data recorded during the memory retention trial showed that transfer latency was significantly increased by majoon‐e‐nisyan at 1000 mg/kg bw (body weight) (p < 0.05) and at 1500 mg/kg bw (p < 0.001) as well as by the positive control (p < 0.001) compared to scopolamine control (negative control). Data of the water maze experiment showed a significant increase (p < 0.01) in time spent near the platform quadrant following treatment with the test drug at mid‐dose (1000 mg/kg bw) and high dose (1500 mg/kg bw) in comparison with vehicle control. A significant increase in time spent in the platform quadrant was also observed in the piracetam group (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The study indicated that majoon‐e‐nisyan had a beneficial effect on cognitive functions at tested dose levels of 1000 and 1500 mg/kg bw in both models. However, the dose of 500 mg/kg bw was ineffective. The current study was successful in demonstrating the effectiveness of majoon‐e‐nisyan using two validated mouse models. Our findings provide more evidence in favor of the concept of hot‐tempered medications used in traditional Unani medicine to treat dementia. background: A broadened clinical spectrum of concomitant complications emerges among the escalating incidence of substance use, particularly within the 'chemsex' context. This case exemplifies the profound neurotoxic repercussions and neurological risk of chemsex in a young HIV-positive male and addresses the multifaceted challenges of such evolving paradigms in substance utilization. Clinical finding: After consuming cannabis, poppers, methamphetamine, and cocaine, a 28-year-old HIV-positive male exhibited significant neurological and cognitive impairment. The initial presentation included dysarthria and profound anterograde amnesia. Laboratory findings showed leukocytosis with a PCR of 3 mg/dl — elevated cerebrospinal fluid protein levels with no cells. Urine toxicology returned positive for cannabis and amphetamines. A brain CT scan revealed bilateral and symmetrical hippocampi and pale globes hypodensity, indicative of toxic-metabolic encephalopathy. MRI further identified lesions in the globus pallidus, cerebellum, and hippocampi. Following the detection of toxic encephalopathy, Initial neuropsychological was performed screening using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), which highlighted immediate memory deficits. An in-depth neuropsychological assessment conducted 3 weeks later included the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV), the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), and tests for visuospatial skills, motor functions, and memory recall. The evaluations revealed pronounced anterograde amnesia, persistent long-term memory inconsistencies, and notable executive function challenges, detailed in Table 1. Conclusions: The detailed analysis of this case underpins the severe neurological consequences that can manifest from heavy substance use. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, including neuroimaging and neuropsychological assessments, are crucial in elucidating the full spectrum of substance-induced cognitive impairments. There is an urgent need for enhanced public awareness and preventative measures, especially in the context of chemsex, to bring forth multifaceted health, social, and government implications that modern society must adeptly navigate. By examining the novels of Susan Abulhawa for remembrances that combat the strategy of forced amnesia of Palestinian ecology, this article finds that literature becomes lieux de mémoire that helps to resist erasure. The beneficial effects of increasing histamine levels on memory have acquired special interest due to their applicability to psychiatric conditions that cause memory impairments. In addition, by employing drug repurposing approaches, it was demonstrated that dihydroergotamine (DHE), an FDA drug approved to treat migraines, inhibits Histamine N Methyl Transferase (HNMT), the enzyme responsible for the inactivation of histamine in the brain. For this reason, in the present work, the effect of DHE on histamine levels in the hippocampus and its effects on memory was evaluated, employing the scopolamine-induced amnesia model, the Novel Object Recognition (NOR) paradigm, and the Morris Water Maze (MWM). Furthermore, the role of histamine 1 receptor (H1R) and histamine 2 receptor (H2R) antagonists in the improvement in memory produced by DHE in the scopolamine-induced amnesia model was evaluated. Results showed that the rats that received DHE (10 mg/kg, i.p.) showed increased histamine levels in the hippocampus after 1 h of administration but not after 5 h. In behavioral assays, it was shown that DHE (1 mg/kg, i.p.) administered 20 min before the training reversed the memory impairment produced by the administration of scopolamine (2 mg/kg, i.p.) immediately after the training in the NOR paradigm and MWM. Additionally, the effects in memory produced by DHE were blocked by pre-treatment with pyrilamine (20 mg/kg, i.p.) administered 30 min before the training in the NOR paradigm and MWM. These findings allow us to demonstrate that DHE improves memory in a scopolamine-induced amnesia model through increasing histamine levels at the hippocampus due to its activity as an HNMT inhibitor. This study aimed to investigate the action of two different formulations of curcumin (Cur)-loaded nanocapsules (Nc) (Eudragit [EUD] and poly (ɛ-caprolactone) [PCL]) in an amnesia mice model. We also investigated the formulations' effects on scopolamine-induced (SCO) depressive- and anxiety-like comorbidities, the cholinergic system, oxidative parameters, and inflammatory markers. Male Swiss mice were randomly divided into five groups (n = 8): group I (control), group II (Cur PCL Nc 10 mg/kg), group III (Cur EUD Nc 10 mg/kg), group IV (free Cur 10 mg/kg), and group V (SCO). Treatments with Nc or Cur (free) were performed daily or on alternate days. After 30 min of treatment, the animals received the SCO and were subjected to behavioral tests 30 min later (Barnes maze, open-field, object recognition, elevated plus maze, tail suspension tests, and step-down inhibitory avoidance tasks). The animals were then euthanized and tissue was removed for biochemical assays. Our results demonstrated that Cur treatment (Nc or free) protected against SCO-induced amnesia and depressive-like behavior. The ex vivo assays revealed lower acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and catalase (CAT) activity, reduced thiobarbituric species (TBARS), reactive species (RS), and non-protein thiols (NSPH) levels, and reduced interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) expression. The treatments did not change hepatic markers in the plasma of mice. After treatments on alternate days, Cur Nc had a more significant effect than the free Cur protocol, implying that Cur may have prolonged action in Nc. This finding supports the concept that it is possible to achieve beneficial effects in nanoformulations, and treatment on alternate days differs from the free Cur protocol regarding anti-amnesic effects in mice. On the simulation theory of memory, to remember is to imagine an event from the personal past. McCarroll has recently argued that, because it implies not only that a genuine memory need not be caused by the rememberer's experience of the remembered event but also that the rememberer need not even have experienced that event, simulationism is unable, first, to explain infantile amnesia (the inability to remember events that occurred in one's early childhood) and, second, to rule out certain "impossible" memories (namely, memories of events that occurred before one was born). Responding to McCarroll, this paper argues that simulationism is in fact able to explain infantile amnesia but concedes that it is unable to rule out pre-birth memories. It goes on to argue, however, that, rather than leading us to reject the theory, this should lead us to endorse a radicalized simulationism on which to remember is simply to imagine an event from the past, regardless of whether that event belongs to the personal past. In adolescent and collegiate athletes with sport-related concussion (SRC), we sought to evaluate the prevalence and predictors of long-term psychological symptoms. A cohort study was conducted of athletes 12–24-year-old diagnosed with SRC between November 2017 and April 2022. Athletes/proxies were interviewed on psychological symptoms (i.e. anger, anxiety, depression, and stress). Participants who scored ≥75th percentile on one or more PROMIS (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System) measures were operationalized to have subclinical, long-term psychological symptoms. Uni/multivariable regressions were used. Of 96 participants (60.4% male), the average age was 16.6 ± 2.6 years. The median time from concussion to interview was 286 days (IQR: 247–420). A total of 36.5% athletes demonstrated subclinical, long-term psychological symptoms. Univariate logistic regression revealed significant predictors of these symptoms: history of psychiatric disorder (OR = 7.42 95% CI 1.37,40.09), substance use (OR = 4.65 95% CI 1.15,18.81), new medical diagnosis since concussion (OR = 3.43 95% CI 1.27,9.26), amnesia (OR = 3.42 95% CI 1.02,11.41), other orthopedic injuries since concussion (OR = 3.11 95% CI 1.18,8.21), age (OR = 1.24 95% CI 1.03,1.48), days to return-to-play (OR = 1.02 95% CI 1.00,1.03), and psychiatric medication use (OR = 0.19 95% CI 0.05,0.74). Multivariable model revealed significant predictors: orthopedic injuries (OR = 5.17 95% CI 1.12,24.00) and return-to-play (OR = 1.02 95% CI 1.00,1.04). The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ocimum basilicum L. (OB) extract on learning and memory impairment in aged rats. Male rats were divided into the following experimental groups: Group 1 (control): including 2 months old rats, Group 2 (aged) including 2 years old rats, Groups 3–5 (aged-OB): including 2 years old rats received 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg OB for 8 weeks by oral gavage. Aging increased the delay to find the platform but, however, decreased the time spent in the target quadrant when tested by Morris water maze (MWM). Aging also reduced the latency to enter the dark chamber in the passive avoidance (PA) test compared to the control group. Moreover, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were raised in the hippocampus and cortex of aged rats. In contrast, thiol levels and enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) significantly reduced. In addition, aging significantly reduced BDNF expression. Finally, OB administration reversed the mentioned effects. The current research showed that OB administration improves learning/memory impairment induced by aging. Transient global amnesia (TGA) often involves precipitating events associated with changes in autonomic nervous system (ANS), and heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the ANS state. This study aimed to investigate HRV changes after TGA. A retrospective analysis of HRV included patients diagnosed with TGA between January 2015 and May 2020. The time and frequency domains of HRV were compared among three groups: early (< 1 week after TGA, n = 19), late (1–4 weeks after TGA, n = 38), and healthy control (HC, n = 19). The Pearson's correlation between time and time-domain HRV was also examined. The standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN) (early, 47.2; late, 35.5; HC, 41.5; p = 0.033) and root mean square of successive RR interval differences (RMSSD) (early, 38.5; late, 21.3; HC, 31.0; p = 0.006) differed significantly among the three groups. Post-hoc analysis showed statistically significant differences only in the early and late groups in both SDNN (p = 0.032) and RMSSD (p = 0.006) values. However, the frequency domain with total power, low-frequency and high-frequency powers, and low-frequency/high-frequency ratio did not differ. SDNN (Pearson correlation coefficient =− 0.396, p = 0.002) and RMSSD (Pearson correlation coefficient =− 0.406, p = 0.002) were negatively correlated with time after TGA. Changes in HRV occurred over time after the onset of TGA, with the pattern showing an increase in the first week and then a decrease within 4 weeks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Amnesia is a cognitive disorder that may lead to memory loss. Caffeine is a psychoactive substance which have an effect on memory and cognitive functions. This study aimed to assess the association of transient global amnesia (TGA) with dietary intake of caffeine. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was conducted on the Sabzevar Persian cohort data of 258 patients with TGA and 520 healthy individuals in Sabzevar, Iran. The Nutritional data were gathered in face‐to‐face interviews using a valid Food Frequency Questionnaire. Different models of logistic regression were used to determine the association between TGA and dietary caffeine intake after adjusting the confounders including age, sex, education, job, marital status, physical activity, BMI, and calorie intake. Results: There was no significant difference in terms of dietary calorie intake of (2279.5 ± 757.9 vs. 2365.5 ± 799.5, p = 0.19), protein (70.79 ± 25.27 vs. 72.94 ± 24.83, p = 0.31), fat (59.97 ± 23.79 vs. 60.13 ± 26.38, p = 0.93), carbohydrate (376 ± 134 vs. 393.1 ± 137.8, p = 0.14), and caffeine (196.4 ± 127.9 vs. 186.3 ± 128.5, p = 0.36) between the groups. No significant association was found between TGA and dietary intake of caffeine (OR: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.99–1.01, p = 0.36). The results did not change after adjusting the confounders. Background: There is a lack of evidence relating to cognitive‐communication difficulties following traumatic brain injury (TBI) sustained in older adulthood. A prominent area in which post‐TBI cognitive‐communication difficulties manifest is at the level of social communication. An investigation of social communication focusing on comparison of those injured in older and younger adulthood is a practical starting point for age‐related cognitive‐communication outcome comparison. Aims: The overall objective of this study was to explore the social communication of individuals who sustained severe TBI in an early period of older adulthood (50–70 years) compared to younger adulthood (18–40 years), as informed by self and close other reports. Methods & Procedures: This exploratory controlled group comparison study involved analysis of self‐reported and close other reported La Trobe Communication Questionnaire data for 22 adults with severe TBI (11 older at injury; 11 younger at injury) and 22 control participants (11 older; 11 younger). TBI participants were matched for injury variables and participant groups were matched for sex, age and education. Outcomes & Results: The close others of the older and younger adults with TBI reported them to have significantly more frequent difficulty with social communication than the close others of age‐matched control groups. Older adults with TBI reported significantly more frequent difficulty with social communication than uninjured older adults. In contrast, younger adults with TBI and uninjured younger adults reported a similar frequency of difficulty with social communication. No age‐based difference in the frequency of social communication difficulty was evident when comparing the self or close other reports of older and younger adults with TBI. Awareness of social communication difficulty, as indexed by comparing self and close other perceptions, showed a different pattern across the TBI groups. The older TBI group rated themselves as having significantly less frequent social communication difficulty than was perceived by their close others. In contrast, no statistically significant difference was evident between the self and close other social communication ratings of the younger TBI group. Conclusions and Implications: Where possible clinicians need to work with close communication partners to understand the nature and degree of social communication difficulty following severe TBI. This may be especially important when working with people who sustain TBI in older adulthood if future research shows that this population have greater difficulty with self‐awareness of social communication difficulty. These challenges have primarily been investigated in individuals who sustained TBI in younger adulthood. Purpose: Narration within a story grammar framework requires speakers to organize characters and events logically. Despite abundant research characterizing narrative deficits following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), the evolution of narrative story grammar over the first 2 years post-TBI has rarely been explored. This study analyzed story grammar in complex narratives of adults with and without severe TBI to (a) examine between-group differences and (b) investigate longitudinal changes over the first 2 years post-TBI. Method: Story grammar analyses of Cinderella narratives from 57 participants with TBI and 57 participants with no brain injury yielded measures of productivity (total number of episodes, total number of story grammar elements), elaboration (total number of elaborated--complete episodes, mean number of episodic elements per episode), and completeness (total number of incomplete episodes). Mann--Whitney U tests compared measures across groups; generalized estimating equation (GEE) models identified predictors of change, including recovery time (3, 6, 9, 12, and 24 months post-TBI) and demographic/injury-related characteristics. Results: Between-group differences were statistically significant for all productivity and elaboration measures at 3, 6, and 9 months post-TBI; one productivity measure and one elaboration measure at 12 months; and none of the measures at 24 months. GEE models showed significant improvements in all productivity and elaboration measures over the first 24 months post-TBI, with educational attainment and duration of posttraumatic amnesia affecting recovery. Incomplete episodes only showed between-group differences at 12 months and did not capture recovery. Conclusion: Productivity and elaboration are key story grammar variables that (a) differentiate complex narration in individuals with and without severe TBI and (b) capture narrative improvements over the first 2 years post-TBI. L'électroconvulsivothérapie (ECT) est la plus ancienne technique encore utilisée en psychiatrie. Néanmoins, ses effets indésirables cognitifs sont fréquents, notamment les plaintes mnésiques. L'objectif principal de cette revue est de décrire la nature des troubles mnésiques liés à L'ECT, l'évolution à court et à long terme et les facteurs de risques associés puis de proposer des recommandations d'évaluation et de suivi appropriées. Une revue systématique de la littérature a été réalisée au mois d'avril 2022, suivant la méthodologie PRISMA. Les équations de recherche ont été entrées dans PubMed et Cochrane en utilisant les termes suivants : « cognition » et « electroconvulsivetherapy » ou « amnesia » et « electroconvulsive therapy » ou « adverse effects » et « electroconvulsivetherapy ». La recherche a été réalisée de l'année 2000 à 2022. Notre revue a permis d'inclure vingt articles dont quatre sur la nature et l'évolution des troubles mnésiques, trois sur les mécanismes, six sur les facteurs de risque, trois sur l'évaluation et les tests cognitifs et quatre sur la prise en charge. Les données ont montré une atteinte de la mémoire antérograde et rétrograde. Dans les jours qui suivent la séance, les capacités de se souvenir des événements survenus après l'ECT ainsi que des connaissances générales et autobiographiques sont altérées. Mais la plupart des fonctions cognitives s'améliorent au bout de quatre semaines. Certains patients néanmoins peuvent présenter des déficits de la mémoire autobiographique trois à six mois après l'ECT. La durée de la période confusionnelle est un facteur prédictif de la persistance des troubles de la mémoire. Les plaintes subjectives ne sont pas corrélées aux troubles mnésiques objectifs mais plutôt à la sévérité de la dépression. Ils durent plus longtemps que les troubles objectifs. L'atteinte est d'autant plus marquée que les événements sont proches de l'ECT. Nous avons trouvé, à la lumière des études incluses, l'absence d'origine lésionnelle, une altération du fonctionnement de l'hippocampe et un ralentissement cérébral. En effet, la présence d'ondes thêta à l'EEG dans les régions frontotemporales était associée à la durée de la confusion post-ictale et à une amnésie rétrograde. Il existe plusieurs facteurs associés à l'apparition des troubles mnésiques. Ces facteurs sont la nature et la charge du courant, le placement des électrodes, la fréquence des séances, le produit anesthésique, ainsi que des facteurs individuels tels que l'âge et le sexe. L'utilisation d'un courant ultrabref avec placement des électrodes en unilatéral droit réduit considérablement les effets cognitifs indésirables et préserve également l'efficacité. Différents tests cognitifs ont été utilisés en fonction du domaine cognitif à évaluer. Le test Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) était le test le plus utilisé pour une évaluation globale. Certaines études ont mis en place une batterie cognitive avec des délais d'évaluation allant d'un à six mois. Différentes molécules ont été essayées au cours de l'ECT, notamment les anticholinesthérasiques et le piracetam sans trouver de résultats concluants. Toutefois, les résultats des essais par la kétamine et la mémantine étaient encourageants. L'électroconvulsivothérapie a montré son efficacité dans le traitement de plusieurs troubles psychiatriques. Il est primordial de faire un suivi cognitif en pré- et post-ECT pour détecter d'éventuels troubles mnésiques et assurer une meilleure prise en charge. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the oldest technique still in use in psychiatry. Nevertheless, its adverse cognitive side effects are frequent, particularly complaints about memory. The main objective of this review is to describe the nature of ECT-related memory disorders, their short- and long-term evolution and associated risk factors, and to propose recommendations for appropriate evaluation and follow-up. À systematic review of the literature was conducted in April 2022, using the PRISMA methodology. The English search equations gleaned from the literature published were entered into PubMed and Cochrane using the search queries: 'cognition' and 'electroconvulsive therapy' or 'amnesia' and 'electroconvulsive therapy' or 'adverse effects' and electroconvulsive therapy'. The search was carried out on literature published between 2000 to 2022. Our review included 20 articles, including 4 articles on types of memory disorders, 3 articles on mechanisms, 6 articles on risk factors, 3 articles on cognitive testing and 4 articles on treatment. The data indicated impairment of both anterograde and retrograde memory. In the days following the session of ECT, the ability to recall events that occurred post-treatment, as well as general and autobiographical knowledge, was impaired. However, most cognitive functions improve within 4 weeks. Nevertheless, some patients, may show autobiographical memory deficits for from 3 to 6 months after ECT. The duration of the confusion is a predictive factor for the persistence of memory disorders. Subjective complaints are not correlated with objective memory disorders, but rather with the severity of depression. They last longer than objective disorders. The greater the proximity of the events to the ECT, the greater the impairment. In light of the studies included, we found altered hippocampal function and cerebral slowing. Indeed, the presence of EEG theta waves in frontotemporal regions was associated with the duration of post-ictal confusion and retrograde amnesia. There are several factors associated with the onset of memory disorders. These include the nature and charge of the electrical current, electrode placement, frequency of sessions, anaesthetic product administered, as well as individual factors such as age and gender. The use of ultra-short current with right unilateral electrode placement considerably reduces undesirable cognitive effects and preserves efficacy. Different cognitive tests were used, depending on the cognitive domain to be assessed. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was the most widely used test for global assessment. Some studies used a cognitive array of tests with evaluation ranging from 1 to 6 months after treatment. Various molecules have been tried during ECT, notably anticholinesterase drugs and piracetam, with no conclusive results. However, the results of trials with ketamine and memantine were encouraging. Electroconvulsive therapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of several psychiatric disorders. Concussion research has primarily focused on sport-related mechanisms and excluded non–sport-related mechanisms. In adult populations, non–sport-related concussions (non-SRCs) demonstrated worse clinical outcomes compared with sport-related concussions (SRCs); however, investigations of non-SRCs in college-aged patients are limited. To examine clinical outcomes in collegiate athletes with non-SRCs compared with SRCs and explore sex differences in outcomes among collegiate athletes with non-SRCs. Prospective cohort study. Clinical setting. A total of 3500 athletes were included (n = 555 with non-SRCs, 42.5% female) from colleges or universities and service academies participating in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Department of Defense Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium. Dichotomous outcomes (yes or no) consisted of immediate reporting, mental status alterations, loss of consciousness, posttraumatic amnesia, retrograde amnesia, motor impairments, delayed symptom presentation, and required hospital transport. Continuous outcomes were symptom severity, days with concussion symptoms, and days lost to injury. Data were collected within 24 to 48 hours of injury and at return to play. Adjusted relative risks (ARRs) compared the likelihood of dichotomous outcomes by mechanism and by sex within patients with non-SRCs. Multivariate negative binomial regressions were used to assess group differences in continuous variables. Athletes with non-SRCs were less likely to report immediately (ARR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.65, 0.81) and more likely to report delayed symptom presentation (ARR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.03, 1.32), loss of consciousness (ARR = 3.15, 95% CI = 2.32, 4.28), retrograde amnesia (ARR = 1.77, 95% CI = 1.22, 2.57), and motor impairment (ARR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.14, 1.84). Athletes with non-SRCs described greater symptom severity, more symptomatic days, and more days lost to injury (P <.001) compared with those who had SRCs. Within the non-SRC group, female athletes indicated greater symptom severity, more symptomatic days, and more days lost to injury (P <.03) than male athletes. Athletes with non-SRCs had worse postinjury outcomes compared with those who had SRCs, and female athletes with non-SRCs had worse recovery metrics than male athletes. Epiberberine is one of the main constituents of Coptidis Rhizoma and has been found to be active against diseases such as hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and Alzheimer's disease. However, like other alkaloids its use is limited by rapid absorption, rapid metabolism and low transport to the brain. Nanotechnology has become a method of choice for a better delivery of active principles to the brain. The current study involved the use of a nanotechnological approach for the synthesis of epiberberine-loaded chitosan-collagen nanocomposites using natural polymers chitosan and collagen. This study was aimed at increasing the efficacy of epiberberine for dementia by decreasing the release rate and enhancing the anti-oxidant and AChE inhibition properties of epiberberine. The synthesized nanocomposites were found to be of small size (25 ± 2 nm) with more or less spherical morphology and showed slow release rate. Oxidative stress and impaired levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) are associated with the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. These nanocomposites showed in vitro and in vivo anti-oxidant and AChE inhibition activity. Further, behavioral, biochemical, ELISA and immunohistochemical parameters were also used to evaluate the efficacy of these nanocomposites in a scopolamine-induced amnesia rat model. The results showed that these nanocomposites can reduce cognitive decline and are more effective against scopolamine-induced amnesia than epiberberine and the standard drug donepezil. At a similar concentration of 1 mg kg−1 body weight, the p-values of nanocomposites were smaller (approximately 10−4 to 10−2) in comparison to epiberberine and donepezil, indicating a significant effect against scopolamine-induced amnesia. Subconcussive head impacts are associated with the development of acute and chronic cognitive deficits. We recently reported that high-frequency head impact (HFHI) causes chronic cognitive deficits in mice through synaptic changes. To better understand the mechanisms underlying HFHI-induced memory decline, we used TRAP2/Ai32 transgenic mice to enable visualization and manipulation of memory engrams. We labeled the fear memory engram in male and female mice exposed to an aversive experience and subjected them to sham or HFHI. Upon subsequent exposure to natural memory recall cues, sham, but not HFHI, mice successfully retrieved fearful memories. In sham mice the hippocampal engram neurons exhibited synaptic plasticity, evident in amplified AMPA:NMDA ratio, enhanced AMPA-weighted tau, and increased dendritic spine volume compared with nonengram neurons. In contrast, although HFHI mice retained a comparable number of hippocampal engram neurons, these neurons did not undergo synaptic plasticity. This lack of plasticity coincided with impaired activation of the engram network, leading to retrograde amnesia in HFHI mice. We validated that the memory deficits induced by HFHI stem from synaptic plasticity impairments by artificially activating the engram using optogenetics and found that stimulated memory recall was identical in both sham and HFHI mice. Our work shows that chronic cognitive impairment after HFHI is a result of deficiencies in synaptic plasticity instead of a loss in neuronal infrastructure, and we can reinstate a forgotten memory in the amnestic brain by stimulating the memory engram. Subjective memory decline (SMD) might represent the preclinical phase of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and has been reported in epileptic amnesia associated with accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF). We investigated ALF in SMD subjects by means of RAVLT recall and recognition and ROCF recall after 1-week retention and compared with a control group. Two-way ANOVAs for RAVLT and ROCF were conducted, and stepwise regression analysis was administered considering EMQ and DASS-21 as factors. SMD subjects performed significantly worse than controls at 1-week delay on RAVLT recall and recognition, but not on ROCF, and not associated with depression or memory complaints. SMD patients showed ALF, which is usually associated with temporomesial dysfunctions, representing a cognitive marker to assess objectively memory problems in SMD, and to undisclose initial neurodegenerative disease involving temporal structures usually compromised in AD. The aim of this scoping review was to identify behavioral disturbances exhibited by patients in post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). While behavioral disturbances are common in PTA, research into their presentation and standardized measures for their assessment are limited. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021268275). A scoping review of databases was performed according to pre-determined criteria on 29 July 2021 and updated on 13 July 2022. A conventional content analysis was used to examine and categorize behavioral disturbances. Thirty papers met the inclusion criteria, of which 27 reported observations and/or scores obtained on behavioral scales, and 3 on clinician interviews and surveys. None focused exclusively on children. Agitation was the most frequently assessed behavior, and Agitated Behavior Scale was the most used instrument. Content analysis, however, bore eight broad behavioral categories: disinhibition, agitation, aggression, lability, lethargy/low mood, perceptual disturbances/psychotic symptoms, personality change and sleep disturbances. Our study revealed that while standardized assessments of behavior of patients in PTA are often limited to agitation, clinical descriptions include a range of behavioral disturbances. The famous amnesic patient Henry Molaison (H.M.) died on December 2, 2008. After extensive in situ magnetic resonance imaging in Boston, his brain was removed at autopsy and transported to the University of California San Diego. There the brain was prepared for frozen sectioning and cut into 2401, 70 μm coronal slices. While preliminary analyses of the brain sections have been reported, a comprehensive microscopic neuroanatomical analysis of the state of H.M.'s brain at the time of his death has not yet been published. The brain tissue and slides were subsequently moved to the University of California Davis and the slides digitized at high resolution. Initial stages of producing a website for the public viewing of the images were also carried out. Recently, the slides, digital images, and tissue have been transferred to Boston University for permanent archiving. A new steering committee has been established and plans are in place for completion of a freely accessible H.M. website. Research publications on the microscopic anatomy and neuropathology of H.M.'s brain at the time of his death are also planned. We write this commentary to provide the hippocampus and memory neuroscience communities with a brief summary of what has transpired following H.M.'s death and outline plans for future publications and a tissue archive. Objective: A comparative study of joint amnesia in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty with the direct anterior approach and posterior approach was conducted through a comprehensive evaluation. Methods: The literature on joint amnesia in postoperative patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty by the direct anterior approach and the posterior approach was systematically searched in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, CBM, Wanfang, and VIP databases from the time of library construction until February 13, 2023. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software after independent searching, screening of the literature, data extraction, and quality assessment of the included studies by two investigators in strict accordance with the guidelines for conducting meta-analyses. Results: A total of one RCT and six cohort studies were included in this meta-analysis. Meta-analysis results indicated that at 1 month postoperatively (MD = 2.08, 95% CI (0.20, 3.96), P = 0.03), 3 months (MD = 10.08, 95% CI (1.20, 18.96), P = 0.03), and 1 year (MD = 6.74, 95% CI (1.30, 12.19), P = 0.02), DAA total hip arthroplasty was associated with better FJS compared to PA at 1 year postoperatively. However, there was no statistical significance in FJS between the two groups at 5 years postoperatively (MD = 1.35, 95% CI (− 0.58, 3.28), P = 0.17). Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that the degree of joint amnesia after THA for DAA was not found to be superior to that of PA. Structural damage to the hippocampus gives rise to a severe memory deficit for personal experiences known as organic amnesia. Remarkably, such structural damage may not be the only way of creating amnesia; windows of amnesia can also arise when people deliberately disengage from memory via a process known as retrieval suppression. In this review, we discuss how retrieval suppression induces systemic inhibition of the hippocampus, creating "amnesic shadow" intervals in people's memory for their personal experiences. When new memories are encoded or older memories are reactivated during this amnesic shadow, these memories are disrupted, and such disruption even arises when older memories are subliminally cued. Evidence suggests that the systemic inhibition of the hippocampus during retrieval suppression that gives rise to the amnesic shadow may be mediated by engagement of hippocampal GABAergic inhibitory interneurons. Similar amnesic shadow effects are observed during working memory tasks like the n-back, which also induce notable hippocampal downregulation. We discuss our recent proposal that cognitive operations that require the disengagement of memory retrieval, such as retrieval suppression, are capable of mnemonic process inhibition (the inhibition of mnemonic processes such as encoding, consolidation, and retrieval and not simply individual memories). We suggest that people engage mnemonic process inhibition whenever they shift attention from internal processes to demanding perceptual-motor tasks that may otherwise be disrupted by distraction from our inner world. This hitherto unstudied model of inhibition is a missing step in understanding what happens when attentional shifts occur between internally and externally oriented processes to facilitate goal-directed behaviour. Objectives:( 1) Evaluate the frequency of same-year, repeat concussions; (2) assess predictors of sustaining a repeat concussion; and (3) compare outcomes of athletes with repeat concussions with athletes with single concussion. Design:  A retrospective, case–control study. Setting:  Regional sports concussion center. Patients:  Adolescents sustaining a sport-related concussions (SRC) from November 2017 to October 2020. Independent Variables:  Participants were dichotomized into 2 groups: (1) athletes with a single concussion; and (2) athletes with repeat concussions. Main Outcome Measures:  Between group and within group analyses were completed to look for differences in demographics, personal and family history, concussion history, and recovery metrics between the 2 groups. Results:  Of 834 athletes with an SRC, 56 (6.7%) sustained a repeat concussion and 778 (93.3%) had a single concussion. Between group: Personal history of migraines (19.6% vs 9.5%, χ² = 5.795, P = 0.02), family history of migraines (37.5% vs 24.5%, χ² = 4.621, P = 0.03), and family history of psychiatric disorders (25% vs 13.1%, χ² = 6.224, P = 0.01) were significant predictors of sustaining a repeat concussion. Within group: Among those with a repeat concussion, initial symptom severity was greater (Z = −2.422; P = 0.02) during the repeat concussion and amnesia was more common (χ² = 4.775, P = 0.03) after the initial concussion. Conclusions:  In a single-center study of 834 athletes, 6.7% suffered a same-year, repeat concussion. Risk factors included personal/family migraine history and family psychiatric history. The validity of dissociative memory in forensic contexts and the causes of the so-called “memory wars” are discussed. Misconceptions between clinical and forensic psychology, a deficient definition of amnesia, and the difficulties inherent in studying traumatic memories contribute to the persistence of this controversy. Particularly in the field of forensic psychology, the debate could be attributed to the lack of consensus on scientific evidence. Psychologists need to establish an empirical foundation to understand better the mechanisms of memory involved in remembering and forgetting traumatic memories. Transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a form of temporal lobe epilepsy characterized by amnesic seizures of brief duration. While structural neuroimaging is typically normal in TEA cases, there have been occasional reports of swelling in the medial temporal lobe structures. This article presents two additional cases of TEA with medial temporal lobe swelling and discusses possible causes for these imaging changes. We report a case of a 47-year-old male who presented with altered mental status. A review of his records revealed a weight loss of 20 lbs over the past 6 years, a recent hospitalization for idiopathic polyneuropathy with failure to thrive, and prior surgeries for peptic ulcer disease and small bowel obstruction. He was alert but had retrograde amnesia and peripheral neuropathy. A diagnosis was made, and the patient improved with treatment but was unfortunately left with irreversible neurological deficits. Aims: To explore whether gait and/or balance disturbances are associated with the onset of Alzheimer's dementia (AD) among older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Design: This study employed a longitudinal retrospective cohort design. Methods: We obtained data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center's Uniform Data Set collected from 35 National Institute on Aging Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers between September 2005 and December 2021. The mean age of participants (n = 2692) was 74.5 years with women making up 47.2% of the sample. Risk of incident AD according to baseline gait and/or balance disturbances as measured using the Postural Instability and Gait Disturbance Score, a subscale of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Motor Score, was examined by the Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusting for baseline demographics, medical conditions and study sites. The mean follow‐up duration was 4.0 years. Results: Among all the participants, the presence or the severity of gait and/or balance disturbances was associated with an increased risk of AD. The presence or the severity of gait and/or balance disturbances was associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer's dementia among the subgroups of female and male participants. Conclusion: Gait and/or balance disturbances may increase the risk of developing AD, regardless of sex. Impact: Gait and/or balance disturbances among community‐dwelling older adults with amnestic MCI may need to be frequently assessed by nurses to identify potential risk factors for cognitive decline. In this article, I aim to survey the work of Roberto Bolaño in order to explain an aspect often overlooked in his writing: the existence of a dyschrony, a temporal friction between the characters' neoliberal present and their militant revolutionary past. This struggle exposes a discomfort in the face of a temporality that has rendered the characters obsolete, seeking to forget them and leave their past behind. However, this same discomfort underlines the tensions and contradictions between different historical moments. In a social and political context of amnesia, which aims to establish a monochronic narrative, Bolaño rebels against this forced historical homogeneity by reopening and questioning it. Introduction: We aimed to investigate the alterations in the multilayer network in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). Methods: We enrolled 124 patients with TGA and 80 healthy controls. Both patients with TGA and healthy controls underwent a three-teslar brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A gray matter layer matrix was created using a morphometric similarity network derived from the T1-weighted imaging, and a white matter layer matrix was constructed using structural connectivity based on the diffusion tensor imaging. A multilayer network analysis was performed by applying graph theoretical analysis. Results: There were no significant differences in global network measures between the groups. However, several regions, related to the default mode network, showed significant differences in nodal network measures between the groups. Multi-richness in the left pars opercularis, multi-rich-club degree in the right posterior cingulate gyrus, and weighted multiplex participation in the right posterior cingulate gyrus were higher in patients with TGA compared with healthy controls (15.47 vs. 12.26, p = 0.0005; 41.68 vs. 37.16, p = 0.0005; 0.90 vs. 0.80, p = 0.0005; respectively). The multiplex core–periphery in the left precuneus was higher (0.96 vs. 0.84, p = 0.0005), whereas that in the transverse temporal gyrus was lower in patients with TGA compared with healthy controls (0.00 vs. 0.02, p = 0.0005). Conclusion: We newly find the alterations in the multilayer network in patients with TGA compared with healthy controls, which shows the involvement of the default mode network. Attention has been regarded as the 'gatekeeper' of working memory. However, this conventional view is challenged by recent demonstrations of attribute amnesia. Attribute amnesia is a counterintuitive phenomenon where participants fail to remember a simple piece of information that had just been attended to several seconds ago. This phenomenon is not due to perceptual failure or forgetting, but instead is related to adaptive filters that affect memory encoding. We propose the theory of memory reselection to explain attribute amnesia. Reselection is a secondary round of selection among information that had initially been selected by attention. This mechanism allows attention and working memory to be dissociated. Memory reselection is achieved through an adaptive tuning of memory encoding which might be due to active inhibition of the information, preventing it from being stored in memory. Attention has been regarded as the 'gatekeeper' controlling what information gets selected into working memory. However, a new perspective has emerged with the discovery of attribute amnesia, a phenomenon revealing that people are frequently unable to report information they have just attended to moments ago. This report failure is thought to stem from a lack of consolidating the attended information into working memory, indicating a dissociation between attention and working memory. Building on these findings, a new concept called memory reselection is proposed to describe a secondary round of selection among the attended information. These discoveries challenge the conventional view of how attention and working memory are related and shed new light onto modeling attention and memory as dissociable processes. Neuropsychological research suggests that "experience-near" semantic memory, meaning knowledge attached to a spatiotemporal or event context, is commonly impaired in individuals who have medial temporal lobe amnesia. It is not known if this impairment extends to remotely acquired experience-near knowledge, which is a question relevant to understanding hippocampal/medial temporal lobe functioning. In the present study, we administered a novel semantic memory task designed to target knowledge associated with remote, "dormant" concepts, in addition to knowledge associated with active concepts, to four individuals with medial temporal lobe amnesia and eight matched controls. We found that the individuals with medial temporal lobe amnesia generated significantly fewer experience-near semantic memories for both remote concepts and active concepts. In comparison, the generation of abstract or "experience-far" knowledge was largely spared in the individuals with medial temporal lobe amnesia, regardless of whether the targets for retrieval were remote or active concepts. We interpret these findings as evidence that the medial temporal lobes may have a sustained role in the retrieval of semantic memories associated with spatiotemporal and event contexts, which are cognitive features often ascribed to episodic memory. These results align with recent theoretical models proposing that the hippocampus/medial temporal lobes support cognitive processes that are involved in, but not exclusive to, episodic memory. Isolated fornix anterior column infarction has rarely been described and is difficult to assess accurately using conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We report the case of a 75-year-old female who experienced acute anterograde amnesia. MRI performed within 24 h after amnesia onset showed an isolated infarction of the bilateral anterior columns of the fornix on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). Her symptoms persisted for up to 50 days, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) showed disruption of the fiber tracts of the fornix. when acute amnesia syndrome onset, fornix anterior column infarction should be considered, and optimized DWI and DTI methods are needed to study the fornix in vivo in future research. Associative processes that provide salience through sorting of mental content rely upon dissociative processes to remove non-salient content from awareness, like not noticing the glasses on your nose. When association fails in trauma, as capacities to assimilate and accommodate experience are outstripped by that experience being outside the usual range of human experience, then more elaborate dissociative experience like depersonalization and derealization may become active to help us tolerate our perception even if it costs the price of isolated affect or additional amnesia for experience. With repetition of traumatic experience identity confusion and identity alteration may occur, effectively generating the less common dissociative identity disorder. This guide first explores the basis of dissociative experience as a prelude to the reader's foray into the subject of this special issue of this journal. Additionally, the writer delves into aspects of the work of a world-class collection of authoritative articles to fully flesh them out or emphasize critically important perspectives. Though the 2011 'riots' attracted a huge amount of political, media and academic attention, the state's punitive reaction to the unrest received far less analysis, despite being characterised by exceptionally harsh practices at every stage from arrest to sentencing. Drawing on interviews with criminal justice professionals who were at the heart of this response, and focusing in particular on the Crown Prosecution Service's unusually punitive approach, this article examines the imaginations, assumptions and claims that allowed professionals to variously justify and problematise this vindictive backlash. The article shows how an imagination of the disturbances as an apolitical and unprecedented outbreak of violence was central to many professionals' accounts. Yet this imagination, I contend, requires significant erasure and elision. Forgetting England's long history of unrest, and ignoring or dismissing the police killing of Mark Duggan that immediately precipitated the disturbances, were vitally important in allowing professionals to ignore the vital connections between the unrest and entrenched structural racism that has consistently underpinned post-war urban unrest – and to position the harsh law and order response as reasonable, proportionate, necessary and adequate. In doing so, the article makes a significant contribution to scholarship on the unrest, and on the importance of amnesia and ignorance - conceived as active, collective and inherently political processes - in normalising punitive and discriminatory state practices, both in the wake of the riots and in their longer aftermath. Objectives: Although physical trauma has been reported in boxing since its inception, boxing still appeals to athletes and spectators. This systematic review and meta-analysis assess both acute and chronic neurological and neuropsychological effects that boxing has on the brain. Further assessments in terms of comparisons of the concussion ratio in boxing to other combat sports, as well as the efficiency of wearing headguards, are also performed. Data Sources: This systematic review and meta-analysis used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The outcomes incorporated included physical chronic abnormalities of the brain, neuropsychiatrie, and neurological disorders sustained in amateur or professional boxing, in addition to the safety benefits of boxing headguards. Odds ratios, descriptive statistics, and inferential statistics are also reported. Main Results: From the 84 articles reviewed, the 35 included articles suggested that boxers have a significantly elevated risk of sustaining a concussion compared with other combat sports (risk ratio [RR]: 0.253 vs RR: 0.065, P < 0.001). From the 631 amateur and professional boxers analyzed, 147 (23.30%) had cavum septum pellucidum, whereas 125 of 411 amateur and professional boxers (30.41%) presented with some form of brain atrophy. Dementia or amnesia was observed in 46 of 71 boxers (61.79%), 36 of 70 (51.43%) had various forms and severities of cognitive disorders, and 57 of 109 (52.29%) displayed abnormal computed tomography or electroencephalogram scan results. Utilization of headguards significantly increased the risk for stoppages in amateur bouts, compared with boxers not wearing a headguard (OR: 1.75 vs 0.53, P < 0.050). Conclusions: Boxing is a hazardous sport that has the potential to have fatal and negative life-changing results. Because of the limited reliable data regarding the efficiency of boxing headguards, future research should focus on the overall significance that headguards may have for reducing head trauma. Dissociative amnesia is controversial. We tested other factors that could contribute to an inability to remember an important aspect of a traumatic event: how traumatic the event was, organic amnesia, dissociative state, childhood amnesia, expression suppression, sleep disturbance, repeated experiences, and ordinary forgetting. Trauma survivors who reported an inability to remember an important aspect of a traumatic event rated the event as traumatic as trauma survivors who reported no such inability to remember. Moreover, all cases of an inability to remember an important aspect of the traumatic event could be explained by at least one factor other than dissociative amnesia. These findings are contrary to dissociative amnesia. Compared to participants who reported no inability to remember an important aspect of the traumatic event, participants who did report an inability to remember were more likely to (1) have felt disconnected from their body during the traumatic event, which may have altered memory encoding, (2) have experienced sleep problems in the year after the traumatic event, which may have reduced memory consolidation, and (3) have experienced the traumatic event repeatedly, which may have led to less detailed memories. Objective: A paucity of data exists regarding the duration of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA) as a predictor of cognitive functioning among children after traumatic brain injury (TBI). The study aimed to assess the relationship between PTA duration and areas of neurocognitive function among the pediatric population in the sub-acute phase of recovery and rehabilitation. Methods: Data were collected from medical files on 103 children aged 5.5–16.5 hospitalized at a pediatric rehabilitation department with a diagnosis of moderate–severe TBI (msTBI) between the years 2004–2019. The Children Orientation and Amnesia Test was used to evaluate PTA duration. Measures of high-order cognitive abilities of attention and executive function were collected using the Test of Everyday Attention–Child version (TEA-Ch). Results: Three PTA duration groups were assembled out of a cluster analysis: "Long PTA" (M = 21 days), "Very Long PTA" (M = 47 days), and "Extremely Long PTA" (M = 94 days). Analyses revealed that the "Long PTA" group preformed significantly better than the "Very Long PTA" and "Extremely Long PTA" groups on all TEA-Ch measures, that is, Selective Attention, Attentional Control Switching, and Sustained Attention. Conclusions: This study is the first to demonstrate that PTA duration is a useful predictor of high-order cognitive functions among children with msTBI in the sub-acute phase of recovery and rehabilitation. The findings emphasize the importance of using a more sensitive classification of prolonged PTA durations to improve outcome prediction and allocation of resources to those who can benefit most after severe brain injuries. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome that is characterized by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia and a less prominent impairment in retrograde memory lasting up to 24 h. Although several etiologies have been proposed, including migraine, epilepsy, ischemia, venous congestion, and glutamate toxicity, none sufficiently explain the disorder in its entirety. We retrospectively investigated images obtained using single‐photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), performed with 99mtechnetium hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime, from 11 patients with TGA divided into the following groups based on the timing of SPECT: during TGA (n = 2, Group 1), at the start of the attenuation of memory impairments (n = 2, Group 2), and after TGA (n = 7, Group 3). Regional isotope accumulation was examined using a three‐dimensional stereotactic surface projection (3D‐SSP) analysis. After calculating the mathematical product of the mean severity and extent ratio, unique comparable bar graphs were prepared with respect to Brodmann's areas (B). Increases in isotope accumulation were the largest in the retrosplenial cortex (B29, B30), posterior cingulate cortex (B23, B31), and precuneus (B7) in Groups 1 and 2, whereas decreases were noted in the same regions in Group 3. This is the first study to identify cerebral sites and describe changes consistent with the completion of amnesia as a symptom using an image analysis, such as a 3D‐SSP analysis.
