Abstract

This study examined the effects of dietary supplementation of queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis with an indigenous strain of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum I, previously isolated from its digestive tract, on gut microbial populations and growth rates during cultivation under simulated climate change conditions (pH 7.8, T = 16 ± 2 °C). After one month of feeding, the results showed a noticeable reduction in aquaculture diseases causing pathogens while maintaining sufficient viable Lpb. plantarum I cells. A higher pH and temperature resulted in higher growth rates, measured by the weight and length of scallops, compared to the control group. The results obtained shed light on the influence of the addition of lactic acid bacteria on the growth of bivalve mollusks under normal and climate change conditions, and provide control of pathogenic microorganisms. In the context of climate change, host-pathogen interactions need to be recognized and put under control by applying natural solutions to minimize the environmental footprint.

In the context of climate change, host-pathogen interactions need to be recognized and put under control by applying natural solutions to minimize the environmental footprint., U ovoj studiji ispitani su učinci dodataka prehrani češljači Aequipecten opercularis s autohtonim sojem bakterija mliječne kiseline (LAB), kao što je Lactiplantibacillus plantarum I koji je prethodno izoliran iz njegovog probavnog trakta, na populacije crijevnih mikroba i stope rasta tijekom uzgoja pod simulirano promjenjenim klimatskim uvjetima (pH 7,8, T=16±2°C). Nakon mjesec dana hranjenja, rezultati su pokazali zamjetno smanjenje uzročnika bolesti u akvakulturi uz zadržavanje dovoljne količine živih stanica L. plantarum I. Viši pH i temperatura rezultirali su većim stopama rasta, izmjerenom težinom i duljinom školjkaša, u usporedbi s kontrolnom skupinom. Dobiveni rezultati rasvjetljavaju utjecaj dodatka bakterija mliječne kiseline na rast školjkaša u normalnim i klimatskim promijenjenim uvjetima te omogućuju suzbijanje patogenih mikroorganizama. U kontekstu klimatskih promjena, interakcije domaćin-patogen treba prepoznati i staviti pod kontrolu primjenom prirodnih rješenja kako bi se smanjio utjecaj na okoliš.

4. New records of hard-bottom polychaete species in the central Adriatic Sea

Abstract

Adriatic Sea is a diverse marine ecosystem that supports a rich biodiversity of polychaete species on soft and hard-bottoms, with 764 recorded species in the latest inventory list. Benthic surveys conducted in 2018 in the hard-bottom infralittoral zone on the east coast of the central Adriatic Sea revealed one previously unreported species for the Adriatic Sea, Syllis kabilica Ben-Eliahu, 1977 (Syllidae), as well as two species reported for the first time in the eastern Adriatic Sea, Syllis tyrrhena (Licher and Kuper, 1998) (Syllidae), and Streblosoma nogueirai Lezzi and Giangrande, 2019 (Terebellidae). Furthermore, one alien species was identified, Lysidice collaris Grube, 1868 (Eunicidae). These findings provide new insights into the distribution and diversity of polychaete fauna in the Adriatic Sea., Ekosustav Jadranskog mora je raznolik s velikom bioraznolikošću vrsta mnogočetinaša na čvrstim i na pomičnim podlogama, sa 764 zabilježene vrste prema posljednjem popisu. Tijekom provedenih istraživanja na čvrstim podlogama u zoni infralitorala na istočnoj strani srednjeg Jadrana tijekom 2018. godine, otkrivena je prethodno nezabilježena vrsta mnogočetinaša za Jadransko more, Syllis kabilica Ben-Eliahu, 1977 (Syllidae), kao i dvije vrste prvi put zabilježene u istočnom Jadranu, Syllis tyrrhena (Licher and Kuper, 1998) (Syllidae) i Streblosoma nogueirai Lezzi and Giangrande, 2019 (Terebellidae). Zabilježena je i jedna strana vrsta mnogočetinaša, Lysidice collaris Grube, 1868 (Eunicidae). Ovi nalazi pružaju novi uvid u rasprostranjenost i raznolikost faune mnogočetinaša u Jadranskom moru.

Abstract

Climate change has presented a serious problem in recent times, which is why a new approach is being sought in terms of aquacultural food quality. In this study, the influence of temperature increase (by 2 °C) and pH decrease (by 0.2) was investigated on the queen scallop, Aequipecten opercularis (Linnaeus, 1758). Furthermore, the effect of a food-enriched diet with the probiotic culture Lactiplantibacillus plantarum I was assessed in climate-changed conditions. Scallops' morphometric parameters were measured before the experimental setup and after one month of being kept in controlled conditions. Morphometric parameters included the elongation index, compactness index, convexity index, density index, condition index, meat yield, gonadosomatic index, adductor muscle index, and hepatosomatic index. Climate-changed conditions had no effect on the scallop condition index, meat yield, or hepatosomatic index. Nevertheless, the addition of probiotics to their diet had a positive effect on the queen scallops cultivated under conditions of climate change, influencing positive allometry and the increase of the gonadosomatic indices. On the other hand, the same conditions negatively affected the adductor muscle index of the scallops. To conclude, in the context of climate change conditions, queen scallops could be a good organism of choice that can be very well adapted to the changed environmental conditions, especially with the addition of the lactic acid bacteria culture Lpb. plantarum I. 10. Study of the Impact of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum I on the Health Status of Queen Scallop Aequipecten opercularis

Abstract

The objective of this research was to isolate and identify lactic acid bacteria living in the digestive tract of the queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis and further test it as a probiotic culture on the growth of the bivalve during one month in captivity. Classic microbiological techniques (API and MALDI TOF) were used and four different strains of Lactiplantibacillus and one Lactococcus were identified and further analyzed, namely: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum I, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 1, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 2, Lactococcus lactis, and Lactiplantibacillus brevis. The isolated cultures were further tested for the highest antimicrobial activity towards the most common marine pathogens and survival at different temperatures and pH levels. The strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum I had the best results, with the highest antimicrobial activity (77–85% pathogen growth inhibition) and the best safety standards showing no antibiotic resistance, and no ability to synthesize biogenic amine and degrade red blood cells. Considering all the abovementioned characteristics, the strain Lpb. plantarum I was further tested on the growth and health status of the bivalve Aequipecten opercularis during a month of cultivation in captivity. The results showed that the incorporation of Lpb. plantarum I led to a decrease in the quantity of test microorganisms in the bivalve and an increase in both the growth rate weight and growth rate length of the queen scallop A. opercularis. Furthermore, the scallops fed with the algae culture + Lpb. plantarum I gained significantly higher meat yield (33.15 ± 2.63%) compared with the control scallops fed only with the algae culture (29.66 ± 2.87%). To conclude, the results from this research indicate that including Lpb. plantarum I as a dietary supplement could enhance growth performance and serve as a feasible approach to reduce pathogen levels while cultivating A. opercularis in captivity.

Abstract

Seasonal changes in environmental parameters affect the metabolic activities and physiology of bivalves. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of environmental parameters on the queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis (Linnaeus, 1758). Scallops were sampled in October 2020 at the Kamenjak Peninsula area, Northern Adriatic. Their culture was maintained for a period of one year in tanks with flowing seawater exchange. To assess the seasonal impact of temperature, pH, and oxygen levels on growth and physiological status, queen scallops were sampled from the tanks four times a year and morphometric parameters, somatic indices and condition index were measured. Seasones had the greatest impact on the scallop's soft body weight, followed by the bivalve total weight, and finally on the morphometric characteristics. The highest condition index was recorded in autumn (94.04%) and the lowest in summer (46.67%). Somatic indices varied during the seasons ; the muscle index was lowest in summer (3.81%) and the highest in winter (5.96%) while the gonadosomatic index is lowest in autumn (18.01%) and highest in spring (34.06%). The wet soft body weight and the condition index are dependent on the seawater temperature and pH, while morphometric parameters were less influenced by environmental factors.

Abstract

Good datasets of geo-referenced records of alien species are a prerequisite for assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of biological invasions, their invasive potential, and the magnitude of their impacts. However, with the exception of first records on a country level or wider regions, observations of species presence tend to remain unpublished, buried in scattered repositories or in the personal databases of experts. Through an initiative to collect, harmonize and make such unpublished data for marine alien and cryptogenic species in the Mediterranean Sea available, a large dataset comprising 5376 records was created. It includes records of 239 alien or cryptogenic taxa (192 Animalia, 24 Plantae, 23 Chromista) from 19 countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of records, the most reported Phyla in descending order were Chordata, Mollusca, Chlorophyta, Arthropoda, and Rhodophyta. The most recorded species was Caulerpa cylindracea, followed by Siganus luridus, Magallana sp. (cf. gigas or angulata) and Pterois miles. The dataset includes records from 1972 to 2020, with the highest number of records observed in 2018. Among the records of the dataset, Dictyota acutiloba is a first record for the Mediterranean Sea. Nine first country records are also included: the alga Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla, the cube boxfish Ostracion cubicus, and the cleaner shrimp Urocaridella pulchella from Israel; the sponge Paraleucilla magna from Libya and Slovenia; the lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus from Cyprus; the bryozoan Celleporaria vermiformis and the polychaetes Prionospio depauperata and Notomastus aberans from Malta.

Abstract

Good datasets of geo-referenced records of alien species are a prerequisite for assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of biological invasions, their invasive potential, and the magnitude of their impacts. However, with the exception of first records on a country level or wider regions, observations of species presence tend to remain unpublished, buried in scattered repositories or in the personal databases of experts. Through an initiative to collect, harmonize and make such unpublished data for marine alien and cryptogenic species in the Mediterranean Sea available, a large dataset comprising 5376 records was created. It includes records of 239 alien or cryptogenic taxa (192 Animalia, 24 Plantae, 23 Chromista) from 19 countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of records, the most reported Phyla in descending order were Chordata, Mollusca, Chlorophyta, Arthropoda, and Rhodophyta. The most recorded species was Caulerpa cylindracea, followed by Siganus luridus, Magallana sp. (cf. gigas or angulata) and Pterois miles. The dataset includes records from 1972 to 2020, with the highest number of records observed in 2018. Among the records of the dataset, Dictyota acutiloba is a first record for the Mediterranean Sea. Nine first country records are also included: the alga Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla, the cube boxfish Ostracion cubicus, and the cleaner shrimp Urocaridella pulchella from Israel; the sponge Paraleucilla magna from Libya and Slovenia; the lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus from Cyprus; the bryozoan Celleporaria vermiformis and the polychaetes Prionospio depauperata and Notomastus aberans from Malta.

15. Macroalgal biodiversity of Shoal of Jabuka

Abstract

The area around Shoal of Jabuka, 2300 m west of Jabuka Islet (central Adriatic Sea), has rarely been investigated for macroalgae. The most historical research was done during the 1950s. Comparison and supplementation historical data with our preliminary studies demonstrate that this area has a unique composition, a large number of species and high biomass of macroalgae. Our research was carried out in September 2016 and May 2017. Samples were collected along transects in NE-SW direction by scuba diving up to 35 m deep. From the samples collected in the fall, we identified 171 taxa. Biomass was dominated by the populations of Fucales (Cystoseira spp. and Sargassum spp.). Dense vegetation of infralittoral algae reached up to 40 m deep. Four taxa of Cystoseira and two of Sargassum was recorded. In the whole Mediterranean, including the Adriatic, there has been a recent decline and disappearance of these species due to anthropogenic impact, overgrazing of sea urchins, native and alien herbivorous fish. All Cystoseira species that were found on the Shoal of Jabuka are listed on the list of protected species in Annex II (Barcelona Convention). Among them, we identified very rare species such as Cystoseira jabukae and Sargassum hornschuchii. Natura 2000 network doesn’t include the Shoal of Jabuka in any category of protection. The large number, density and specific composition of macrobenthic flora, would serve in the evaluation of this area as a unique area and hotspot of biodiversity for macroalgae in the Adriatic Sea.

16. Prostorna raspodjela mnogočetinaša u algalnim zajednicama na području Kaštelanskog zaljeva

Abstract

U ovom istraživanju obrađena je skupina mnogočetinaša na području Kaštelanskog zaljeva, a posebno je analizirana porodica Syllidae s obzirom na njenu osjetljivost na antropogene utjecaje. Uzorkovanje algi i beskralješnjaka obavljeno je ronjenjem na sedam postaja na području zaljeva u zajednicama algi, na dubinama do 1 metra. Postaje su bile pod različitim antropogenim utjecajima kao što su kanalizacijski ispusti, brodogradilište te tvornica cementa. Referentna postaja nalazila se izvan zaljeva. Na svakoj postaji sakupljeno je pet replikata s površine 20 cm x 20 cm. Ukupno je sakupljeno 2211 jedinki mnogočetinaša, od čega su bile 663 jedinke iz porodice Syllidae. Iz ove je porodice određeno 25 vrsta. Ove vrste su poznate po iznimnoj osjetljivosti na antropogene utjecaje, pa je u području istraživanja s obzirom na različite antropogene pritiske analizirana prostorna rasprostranjenost i broj vrsta. Dobiveni rezultati (prostorna rasprostranjenost i broj vrsta porodice Syllidae) pokazali su se kao dobar indikator stanja okoliša u Kaštelanskom zaljevu. Broj vrsta i broj jedinki iz porodice Syllidae značajno je smanjen u područjima pod antropogenim utjecajem, u blizini brodogradilišta, tvornica ili naselja.

17. MAKROBENTOSKA FLORA OTOKA I PLIČINE JABUKE – PRELIMINARNI REZULTATI

Abstract

Bentoska flora područja otoka Jabuke (srednji Jadran) rijetko je istraživana. Usprkos tome, uzimajući u obzir sastav, veliki broj svojti i veliku biomasu, poznata je po svojoj jedinstvenosti. Tijekom pedesetih godina 20. stoljeća, dredžanjem je na širem području Jabuke utvrđeno 268, prvenstveno duboko- morskih, svojti makroalgi. Naša istraživanja makrobentonske flore provedena su u rujnu 2016. i svibnju 2017. godine. Uzorci su sakupljeni autonomnim ronjenjem na dubinskim transektima jugozapadnog dijela otoka i pličine Jabuke, a protezali su se u smjeru SI - JZ do dubine od 35 m. Iz uzoraka sakupljenih u jesen odredili smo 240 svojti od kojih 202 uz otok Jabuku i 171 na pličini. Na pličini biomasom prevladavaju svojte rodova Cystoseira (četiri svojte) i Sargassum (dvije vrste), a iste nisu zabilježene uz otok Jabuku. Njihovo odsustvo pripisujemo utjecaju ribe salpe (Sarpa salpa) i ježincima koji uzrokuju potpuni golobrst između 1 i 10 m dubine. Od stranih vrsta zabilježene su Caulerpa cylindracea, tetrasporofit vrste Asparagopsis armata i Womersleyella setacea, koja je prevladavajuća epifitska vrsta u uzorcima sakupljenim na dubinama većim od 10 m. Ovo istraživanje, zajedno s povijesnim podacima, bi moglo biti osnova za vrednovanje područja kao jedinstvenog hot-spot mjesta biološke raznolikosti makroalgi u Jadranskom moru. Ekološka mreža Natura 2000 uključuje samo podmorje otoka Jabuke dok pličina nije uvrštena ni u jednu kategoriju zaštite.

18. The diversity of fauna in Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile meadows in the area of cape Kamenjak (Istria)

U Jadranu, biocenoza Posidonia oceanica predstavlja jedan od najvažnijih ekosustava, tj. klimaks biocenoza morskih cvjetnica. Dobar je indikator kvalitete morske vode i vrlo je osjetljiva na antropogene utjecaje. U Javnoj ustanovi Kamenjak autonomnim ronjenjem utvrđene su gustoće livada i u njima prisutne vrste faune na 8 postaja, sa ciljem utvrđivanja stanja i smjernica za daljnje upravljanje. Najveća gustoća livade i najveća bioraznolikost utvrđena je na postaji Porer, zatim Fenoliga i Školjić, a najmanja na Portić i Polje. U livadama posidonije ukupno je utvrđeno 2 vrste spužvi, 14 vrsta žarnjaka (6 koralja, 7 obrubnjaka i 1 režnjak), 1 vrsta vrpčara, 1 vrsta štrljcaljca, 31 vrsta mekušaca (16 školjkaša, 13 puževa i 2 glavonošca), 13 vrsta mnogočetinaša, 9 vrsta rakova, 9 vrsta mahovnjaka, 6 vrsta plaštenjaka i 26 vrsta riba. Najčešće vrste su Symphodus rostratus, Spirorbis sp., Halecium halecinum, Actinia equina, Calpensia nobilis, Bittium reticulatum, Cladocora caespitosa koje su zabilježene na svim postajama. S obzirom na faunu, najveći su indeks sličnosti imale postaje Šekovac i Fenoliga, dok su najmanji indeks sličnosti imale postaje Školjić i Polje. In the Adriatic Sea, biocenosis of Posidonia oceanica beds represents one of the most important ecosystems, the climax of seagrass biocenosis. It represents a good indicator of the seawater quality, being strongly sensitive to human perturbations. In the public facility Kamenjak, density of the meadows was measured on 8 stations by diving with autonomic diving equipment, with the goal of defining the condition of Posidonia oceanica meadows and guidelines for managing the facility. Fauna species present in the Posidonia oceanica meadows were determined and listed. In total 16 species of algae, 2 species of sponges, 14 species of cnidarians ( 6 anthozoans, 7 hydrozoans and 1 scyphozoan), 1 ribbon worm, 1 sipunculid, 31 species of molluscs (16 bivalves, 13 gastropods and 2 cephalopods), 13 species of polychaetes, 9 species of crustaceans, 9 species of bryozoans, 6 species of tunicates and 26 fish species were determined. The highest biodiversity and density of P. oceanica was at the station Porer, Fenoliga and Školjić, and the lowest density was on the Portić station. The most common species were Symphodus rostratus, Spirorbis sp., Halecium halecinum, Actinia equina, Calpensia nobilis, Bittium reticulatum, Cladocora caespitosa which were present at all stations. Regarding the fauna species, the highest similarity index was between stations Šekovac and Fenoliga and the lowest was between Školjić and Polje.
