Abstract: International audience; Weathering phenomena are ubiquitous in urban environments, where it is easy to observe severely degraded old buildings as a result of water penetration. Despite being an important part of any realistic city, this kind of phenomenon has received little attention from the Computer Graphics community compared to stains resulting from biological or flow effects on the building exteriors. In this paper, we present physically-inspired deep weathering effects, where the penetration of humidity (i.e., water particles) and its interaction with a building's internal structural elements result in large, visible degradation effects. Our implementation is based on a particle-based propagation model for humidity propagation, coupled with a spring-based interaction simulation that allows chemical interactions, like the formation of rust, to deform and destroy a building's inner structure. To illustrate our methodology, we show a collection of deep degradation effects applied to urban models involving the creation of rust or of ice within walls.

Abstract: International audience; The concept of a circular economy has arisen in response to the problems related to the limits of the dominant linear economic system in contemporary societies and of the finite resources of our planet. The transition from waste status to a raw material by reusing it makes it possible to modify its value for future users and thus to redistribute this value. This article focuses on the case of spent grain to illustrate the role of the circular economy in food transition. Bases on a series of interviews, the paper discusses business modeling to operationalize sustainable development in the food sector and presents a discussion and conclusion on the advantages and limitations of the deployment of the circular economy in the brewing industry, taking into account and understanding the interests and constraints of various stakeholders.

Abstract: Epithelia act as a barrier against environmental stress and abrasion and in vivo they are continuously exposed to environments of various mechanical properties. The impact of this environment on epithelial integrity remains elusive. By culturing epithelial cells on 2D hydrogels, we observe a loss of epithelial monolayer integrity through spontaneous hole formation when grown on soft substrates. Substrate stiffness triggers an unanticipated mechanical switch of epithelial monolayers from tensile on soft to compressive on stiff substrates. Through active nematic modelling, we find unique patterns of cell shape texture called nematic topological defects that underpin large isotropic stress fluctuations at certain locations thereby triggering mechanical failure of the monolayer and hole opening. Our results show that substrate stiffness provides feedback on monolayer mechanical state and that topological defects can trigger stochastic mechanical failure, with potential application towards a mechanistic understanding of compromised epithelial integrity in bacterial infection, tumor progression and morphogenesis.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents an initial work of identifying the dynamic parameters for cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR), CRAFT with a rigorous protocol. An orbital trajectory of the platform is designed in order to get a pure translation movement of the platform. This trajectory evolves in a plane and allows the identification of four dynamic parameters, the mass of the platform and the first three moments along the three main axes. The identification results obtained respectively from the data from the experimental measurements of the moving platform, and from the experimental measurements treated with the application of a semi-implicit homogeneous differentiator, show that in spite of the complexity of CRAFT an identification of all its essential dynamic parameters is possible. Moreover, in the long term, an online identification of CRAFT during handling tasks is envisaged.

Abstract: International audience; Electric vehicles are able to provide immediate power through the vehicle-to-grid function, and they can adjust their charging power level when in the grid-to-vehicle mode. This allows them to provide ancillary services such as frequency control. Their batteries differ from conventional energy storage systems in that the owner’s energy requirement constraint must be met when the vehicles participate in a frequency control system. An optimization problem was defined by considering both the owner satisfaction and frequency control performance. The main contribution of the proposed paper, compared to the literature, are (1) to keep the total available energy stored in the batteries connected to a charging station in an optimal region that favors the frequency regulation capability of the station and the proposed QoS and (2) to consider the optimal region bounded by the efficiency thresholds of the charger to allow for maximum regulation power. The problem is expressed as a multi-criteria optimization problem with time-dependent references. The paper presents an energy management strategy for frequency control, describes a concept of an optimal time-dependent state of charge for electric vehicle charging demands, and considers the power dependence of the electric vehicle charger efficiency. Finally, the simulation results are presented via Matlab/Simulink to prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract: Immersive geospatial visualization finds increasing application for navigation, exploration, and analysis. Many such require the display of data at different scales, often in views with three-dimensional geometry. Multi-view solutions, such as focus+context, overview+detail, and distorted projections can show different scales at the same time, and help place an area of interest within its surroundings. By inverting the principle of stereographic projection – projecting spatial features from a map onto a virtual sphere which surrounds the viewer – we present a novel technique for immersive geospatial focus+context that aims to mitigate problems with existing solutions. This sphere can intersect the map, dividing it into two parts: the inside of the sphere, which stays unchanged, and the outside, which gets projected to the surface, resulting in an inversion of the lens metaphor by distorting the context instead of the focus. This detail-in-context visualization maximizes the amount of context that can be legibly shown by the smooth compression inherent to the stereographic projection, and by utilizing otherwise unused screen space in the sky. The projection method allows for easy control over the projection and distortion characteristics by varying only two main parameters – the sphere’s radius and its position. The omnidirectional nature of our system makes it particularly well-suited for immersive displays by accommodating typical immersive exploration and fully utilizing the additional visual space available. Applying our system to an urban environment, we were able to solicit positive reactions during feedback sessions with experts from urbanism.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, for the situation of HVDC inserted in meshed AC power grid, a Model-matching robust H ∞ static output error feedback controller (RSOFC) and model-matching dynamic decoupled output feedback controller (DDOFC) are proposed to improve the damping of inter-area oscillation modes and maintain robustness to face the effects of different operating points and unstable zeros. Sufficient conditions for robust stability are derived in the sense of Lyapunov asymptotic stability and presented in the form of linear matrix inequalities to obtain H ∞ RSOFC and DDOFC gains based on the reference model. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed controllers are tested and compared to Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control, mixed sensitivity H ∞ , standard (IEEE) Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controllers on a realistic benchmark of 19 generators connected by a meshed AC grid. The main contributions of this paper are: (i) Compensate the negative effect of unstable zeros (non-minimum phase behavior) on the performances of the closed-loop; (ii) the robustness is improved in order to provide good responses in case of network variations (load evolution, line, and generator trips, etc.) and HVDC line parameters changes; (iii) improve the damping compared with standard controller structures (LQG, mixed sensitivity H ∞ and standard POD controller).

Abstract: Covid19 pandemic has seen a boom in signal processing research for epidemiology. In particular, numerous epidemiological data processing strategies to infer the reproduction number, quantifying the virus spread dynamics, have been designed to address the main challenges raised by daily analysis of Covid19 data, namely their limited quality, the requirement of epidemiologically grounded methods, and the need for efficient algorithms for daily monitoring of the pandemic. Elaborating on Cori's epidemiological model, variational strategies have been proposed, yielding consistent and fast reproduction number estimators. Though, at the time of writing, no systematic accuracy analysis have been carried out, the main reason being the absence of annotated data. Quantitative assessment is crucial, first, to validate the ability of reproduction number estimators to manage highly corrupted data, and second, to envision enlarging their use to other epidemics. To this purpose, a synthetic data generation procedure is designed, capturing both Cori's epidemiological model and the limited quality of real-world data, to yield realistic synthetic infection counts accompanied with ground truth time-varying reproduction numbers. This procedure is then leveraged to compare the performance of different estimators through intensive Monte Carlo numerical experiments, exploring different epidemiological dynamics and levels of data corruption.; La pandémie de Covid19 a vu une explosion du nombre de travaux en traitement du signal pour l'épidémiologie. Plusieurs méthodes d'analyse de données épidémiologiques ont notamment été développées pour estimer le coefficient de reproduction, quantifiant la dynamique de propagation du virus, et ont relevé plusieurs défis soulevés par le traitement quotidien des données relatives à la Covid19 : les données sont de qualité limitée, une assise épidémiologique solide doit sous-tendre l'analyse, et les algorithmes qui en découlent doivent être suffisamment efficaces pour effectuer un suivi quotidien. S'appuyant sur le modèle épidémiologique de Cori, des stratégies variatonnelles ont été proposées, fournissant des estimateurs du coefficient de reproduction à la fois précis et calculables rapidement. Néanmoins, à l'heure où nous écrivons, aucune analyse de performance systématique n'a été conduite, la raison principale étant le manque de données annotées. Une évaluation quantitative est pourtant cruciale, tout d'abord, pour valider la capacité des estimateurs du coefficient de reproduction à gérer des données sévèrement corrompues, et par suite pour envisager d'étendre leur utilisation à d'autres épidémies. Dans ce but, une procédure de génération de données synthétiques est élaborée, rendant compte à la fois du modèle épidémiologique de Cori et de la qualité limitée des données réelles afin de fournir des séries temporelles de nouvelles infections réalistes, accompagnées du coefficient de reproduction variable dans le temps constituant la vérité terrain. Cette procédure est mise à profit pour comparer différents estimateurs au moyen de simulations numériques de Monte Carlo intensives, explorant différentes dynamiques épidémiques et différents niveaux de corruption des données.

Abstract: During an activity, knowing the mental workload (MWL) of the user allows to improve the Human-Machine Interactions (HMI). Indeed, the MWL has an impact on the individual and its interaction with the environment. Monitoring it is therefore a crucial issue. In this context, we have created the virtual game Back to Pizza which is based on the N-back task (commonly used for measuring MWL). In this more playful variant, users must carry out orders from customers of a pizza food truck. It is an interactive game that involves the audience of the IHM'23 conference, choosing several parameters like the number of ingredients. During this experience, the objective is to measure MWL in real time through an ElectroEncephaloGraph (EEG) and visual feedback on MWL level is given to the audience. Abstract: International audience; Intermittent computing is an emerging paradigm for systems without batteries and powered by intermittent energy sources. This paradigm promises a more energy-efficient design of computing systems. It seems particularly well suited to the field of connected sensors that form the first level of the Internet of Things. This application domain requires a reactive computing model. The definition of an intermittent and reactive model is a problem that has not yet been fully explored in the literature. In this paper, we focus on the modeling and analysis of intermittent reactive systems. We first introduce an extension of Time Petri Nets with cost to model the different dimensions of the system: concurrency, real time, energy consumption and reward representing the gains generated by the system when it has succeeded in carrying out certain actions. We then aim to synthesize optimal runs of the model that achieve the highest possible reward under a given cost (energy) constraint. We propose a symbolic algorithm for constrained-cost state space computation and prove its termination. We then present algorithms for the synthesis of the optimal traces from an exhaustive or partial state space exploration. We finally illustrate the cost-optimal traces synthesis on a case study and show how that can be used online for joint management of computing time and energy.

Abstract: International audience; A fundamental step in circuit design is the placement of pipeline stages, which can drastically increase the data throughput. Retiming allows optimizing the pipeline with regard to a criterion, for example the required number of registers. This article presents an extension of Timed Petri Net to model synchronous electronic circuits, in order to explore the design space of pipelines. The Timed Petri Nets “à la Ramchandani” with a maximal step firing rule, have notably been used for the modeling of electronic circuits. The RTPN extension, through the reset which model the pipeline stages, and through the delayable transitions which relax some temporal constraints, makes it possible to widen the design space of pipelined systems, and thus to deal with both the retiming and the verification. After a formal definition of this model, we present a method to explore pipelines verifying temporal properties. We apply our approach to a time-multiplexing property allowing the mutualization of operators while minimizing the number of registers.

Abstract: International audience; Gaze behavior of virtual characters in video games and virtual reality experiences is a key factor of realism and immersion. Indeed, gaze plays many roles when interacting with the environment; not only does it indicate what characters are looking at, but it also plays an important role in verbal and non-verbal behaviors and in making virtual characters alive. Automated computing of gaze behaviors is however a challenging problem, and to date none of the existing methods are capable of producing close-to-real results in an interactive context. We therefore propose a novel method that leverages recent advances in several distinct areas related to visual saliency, attention mechanisms, saccadic behavior modelling, and head-gaze animation techniques. Our approach articulates these advances to converge on a multi-map saliency-driven model which offers real-time realistic gaze behaviors for non-conversational characters, together with additional user-control over customizable features to compose a wide variety of results. We first evaluate the benefits of our approach through an objective evaluation that confronts our gaze simulation with ground truth data using an eye-tracking dataset specifically acquired for this purpose. We then rely on subjective evaluation to measure the level of realism of gaze animations generated by our method, in comparison with gaze animations captured from real actors. Our results show that our method generates gaze behaviors that cannot be distinguished from captured gaze animations. Overall, we believe that these results will open the way for more natural and intuitive design of realistic and coherent gaze animations for real-time applications.

Abstract: Discrete models have been widely used in the field of bioinformatics, more especially in Systems Biology. Automata Network is a powerful modeling framework which can represent different dynamics on complex systems. The study of its dynamical properties has multiple purposes. Among these properties, reachability is of crucial interest for many real life applications (e.g. in biological regulatory networks). For example, it can give interesting insights about the behavior of the biological system. Additionally, it can be used to validate a model regarding the biological literature. In the last decade, some approaches have been shown of interest to address instances with hundreds of components. They are based on approximations that however lead to non-conclusiveness on some examples that may appear in practical biological examples. In this work, we present an approach combining static analysis with Bounded Model Checking to decide about the unreachable case. The originality of our method lies in the computation of a sufficient bound on the length of execution sequences, derived from previous works using static analysis.

Abstract: International audience; To meet grand challenges, organizations must rethink how they establish their objectives and processes in a more sustainable way. Social innovation is seen as a very promising way to respond to this call. Nevertheless, social innovation encounters difficulties in scaling and reaching its transformative power. On the basis of the theoretical framework of transition management, our article focuses on the codesign of transformative social innovation by trying to identify how actors can manage it successfully during the experimentation phase. We have conducted research based on the design science methodology to develop both concrete solutions to solve empirical problems and build strong design propositions. The results and design propositions stem from the analysis of three case studies of French social impact bonds (SIBs), which are contractual tools funding social innovation programs. SIBs are, by nature, codesign processes involving different types of stakeholders (private funders, public commissioners, and nonprofit organizations). This article provides six design principles to support the cooperation and alignment of multiple stakeholders to foster their scaling up, which is crucial for perpetuating social innovation. This research contributes theoretically to both the social innovation scaling literature and the transition management framework and offers practical guidelines to help social practitioners to codesign and manage transformative social innovations.

Abstract: Non-cyanobacteria diazotrophs (NCDs) were shown to dominate in surface waters shifting the long-held paradigm of cyanobacteria dominance and raising fundamental questions on how these putative heterotrophic bacteria thrive in sunlit oceans. Here, we report an unprecedented finding in the widely used model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Pt) of NCDs sustaining diatom cells in the absence of bioavailable nitrogen. We identified PtNCDs using metagenomics sequencing and detected nitrogenase gene in silico and/or by PCR. We demonstrated nitrogen fixation in PtNCDs and their close genetic affiliation with NCDs from the environment. We showed the wide occurrence of this type of symbiosis with the isolation of NCDs from other microalgae, their identification in the environment, and predicted their associations with photosynthetic microalgae. Overall, this study provides evidence for a previously overlooked symbiosis using a multidisciplinary model-based approach, which will help understand the different players driving global marine nitrogen fixation.

Abstract: In this paper we consider a system coupling a wave equation with a heat equation through its boundary conditions. The existence of a small parameter in the heat equation, as a factor multiplying the time derivative, implies the existence of different time scales between the constituents of the system. This suggests the idea of applying a singular perturbation method to study stability properties. In fact, we prove that this method works for the system under study. Using this strategy, we get the stability of the system and a Tikhonov theorem, which allows us to approximate the solution of the coupled system using some appropriate uncoupled subsystems.

Nevertheless, they are challenging to identify and remain barely known. Omics-based censuses are helpful in predicting microbial interactions through the statistical inference of single (static) association networks. Yet, microbial interactions are dynamic and we have limited knowledge of how they change over time. Here, we investigate the dynamics of microbial associations in a 10-year marine time series in the Mediterranean Sea using an approach inferring a time-resolved (temporal) network from a single static network. Results: A single static network including microbial eukaryotes and bacteria was built using metabarcoding data derived from 120 monthly samples. For the decade, we aimed to identify persistent, seasonal, and temporary microbial associations by determining a temporal network that captures the interactome of each individual sample. We found that the temporal network appears to follow an annual cycle, collapsing, and reassembling when transiting between colder and warmer waters. We observed higher association repeatability in colder than in warmer months. Only 16 associations could be validated using observations reported in literature, underlining our knowledge gap in marine microbial ecological interactions. Conclusions: Our results indicate that marine microbial associations follow recurrent temporal dynamics in temperate zones, which need to be accounted for to better understand the functioning of the ocean microbiome. The constructed marine temporal network may serve as a resource for testing season-specific microbial interaction hypotheses. Abstract: Tools based on deep learning models have been created in recent years to aid radiologists in the diagnosis of breast cancer from mammograms. However, the datasets used to train these models may suffer from class imbalance, i.e., there are often fewer malignant samples than benign or healthy, which can bias the model towards the healthy class. In this study, we systematically evaluate several popular techniques to deal with this class imbalance, namely, class weighting, over-sampling, and under-sampling, as well as a synthetic lesion generation approach to increase the number of malignant samples. These techniques are applied when training on three diverse Full-Field Digital Mammography datasets, and tested on in-distribution and out-of-distribution samples. The experiments show that a greater imbalance is associated with a greater bias towards the majority class, which can be counteracted by any of the standard class imbalance techniques. On the other hand, these methods provide no benefit to model performance with respect to Area Under the Curve of the Recall Operating Characteristic (AUC-ROC), and indeed under-sampling leads to a reduction of 0.066 in AUC in the case of a 19:1 benign to malignant imbalance. Our synthetic lesion methodology leads to better performance in most cases, with increases of up to 0.07 in AUC on out-of-distribution test sets over the next best experiment.

Abstract: International audience; Solving Direct Shooting Model Predictive Control (MPC) optimization problems online can be computationally expensive if a large horizon is used while also maintaining a dense time sampling. In these cases, it is accepted that tradeoffs between computational load and performances should be sought in order to meet real-time feasibility requirements. However, making the problem more tractable for the hardware should not necessarily imply a decrease in performances. One technique that has been proposed in the literature makes use of control input parameterizations to decrease the numerical complexity of nonlinear MPC problems without necessarily affecting the performances significantly. In this paper, we review the use of parameterizations and propose a simple Sequential Quadratic Programming algorithm for nonlinear MPC. We then benchmark the performances of the solver in simulation, showing that parameterizations allow to attain good performances with (significantly) lower computation times than state-of-the-art solvers.

This leads to non-linear, a priori non-convex, non-differentiable constraints on the controller's gains, which is shown to be solvable using a modern blackbox optimization algorithm. We propose a new methodology employing branch-and-bound and blackbox solvers to generate gains as small as possible ensuring finite time convergence for the twisting algorithm. It is investigated using both a classical and a recently proposed sufficient conditions for finite time convergence. The applicability of the approach is illustrated over a numerical example.

Abstract: International audience; Robust output tracking is addressed in this paper for a diffusion equation with Neumann boundary conditions and anti-collocated boundary input and output. The desired reference tracking is solved using the well-known flatness and Lyapunov approaches. The reference profile is obtained by solving the motion planning problem for the nominal plant. To robustify the closed-loop system in the presence of the disturbances and uncertainties, it is then augmented with PI feedback plus a discontinuous component responsible for rejecting matched disturbances with a priori known magnitude bounds. Such control law only requires the information of the system at the same boundary as the control input is located. The resulting dynamic controller globally exponentially stabilizes the error dynamics while also attenuating the influence of Lipschitz-intime external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. The proposed controller relies on a discontinuous term that however passes through an integrator, thereby minimizing the chattering effect in the plant dynamics. The performance of the closedloop system, thus designed, is illustrated in simulations under different kinds of reference trajectories in the presence of external disturbances and parameter uncertainties.

Abstract: International audience; Electric Vehicle (EV) bidirectional charger technology is growing in importance. It defines the fact of returning the electricity stored in the batteries of EV to Grid (V2G), to Home (V2H), to Load (V2L), or in one word V2X mode. The EV onboard charger is divided into two parts: AC-DC and DC-DC converters. The isolated bidirectional DC-DC LLC resonant converter is used to improve the charger efficiency within both battery power and voltage ranges. It is controlled by varying the switching frequency based on a small signal modeling approach using the gain transfer function inversion method. The dimensions of the DC-DC LLC converter directly affect the charger cost. Moreover, they cause an important control frequency saturation zone, especially in V2X mode, where the switching frequency is out of the feasibility zone. The new challenge in this paper is to design an optimization strategy to minimize the LLC converter cost and improve the control frequency feasibility zone, for a wide variation of battery voltage and converter power, in the charging (G2V) and discharging (V2X) modes simultaneously. For our best knowledge, this optimization problem, in the case of a bidirectional (G2V and V2X) charger, is not yet considered in the literature. An optimal design that considers the control stability equations in the optimization algorithm is elaborated. The obtained results show a significant converter cost decrease and important expansion of control frequency feasibility zones. A comparative study between initial and optimized values, in G2V and V2X modes, is generated according to the converter efficiency.

Abstract: International audience; The prevalence of employing attention mechanisms has brought along concerns about the interpretability of attention distributions. Although it provides insights into how a model is operating, utilizing attention as the explanation of model predictions is still highly dubious. The community is still seeking more interpretable strategies for better identifying local active regions that contribute the most to the final decision. To improve the interpretability of existing attention models, we propose a novel Bilinear Representative Non-Parametric Attention (BR-NPA) strategy that captures the task-relevant human-interpretable information. The target model is first distilled to have higher-resolution intermediate feature maps. From which, representative features are then grouped based on local pairwise feature similarity, to produce finer-grained, more precise attention maps highlighting task-relevant parts of the input. The obtained attention maps are ranked according to the activity level of the compound feature, which provides information regarding the important level of the highlighted regions. The proposed model can be easily adapted in a wide variety of modern deep models, where classification is involved. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments showcase more comprehensive and accurate visual explanations compared to state-of-the-art attention models and visualization methods across multiple tasks including fine-grained image classification, few-shot classification, and person re-identification, without compromising the classification accuracy. The proposed visualization model sheds imperative light on how neural networks ‘pay their attention’ differently in different tasks.

Abstract: International audience; In Virtual Reality (VR), the Sense of Embodiment (SoE) corresponds to the feeling of controlling and owning a virtual body, usually referred to as an avatar. The SoE is generally divided into three components: the Sense of Agency (SoA) which characterises the level of control of the user over the avatar, the Sense of Self-Location (SoSL) which is the feeling to be located in the avatar and the Sense of Body-Ownership (SoBO) that represents the attribution of the virtual body to the user. While previous studies showed that the SoE can be manipulated by disturbing either the SoA, the SoBO or the SoSL, the relationships and interactions between these three components still remain unclear. In this paper, we aim at extending the understanding of the SoE and the interactions between its components by 1) experimentally manipulating them in VR via a biased visual feedback, and 2) understanding if each sub-component can be selectively altered or not. To do so, we designed a within-subject experiment where 47 right-handed participants had to perform movements of their right-hand under different experimental conditions impacting the sub-components of embodiment: the SoA was modified by impacting the control of the avatar with visual biased feedback, the SoBO was altered by modifying the realism of the virtual right hand (anthropomorphic cartoon hand or non-anthropomorphic stick ``fingers'') and the SoSL was controlled via the user's point of view (first or third person). After each trial, participants rated their level of agency, ownership and self-location on a 7-item Likert scale. Results' analysis revealed that the three components could not be selectively altered in this experiment. Nevertheless, these preliminary results pave the way to further studies.

Abstract: Marine plankton mitigate anthropogenic greenhouse gases, modulate biogeochemical cycles, and provide fishery resources. Plankton is distributed across a stratified ecosystem of sunlit surface waters and a vast, though understudied, mesopelagic ‘dark ocean’. In this study, we mapped viruses, prokaryotes, and pico-eukaryotes across 32 globally-distributed cross-depth samples collected during the Tara Oceans Expedition, and assessed their ecologies. Based on depth and O2 measurements, we divided the marine habitat into epipelagic, oxic mesopelagic, and oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) eco-regions. We identified specific communities associated with each marine habitat, and pinpoint environmental drivers of dark ocean communities. Our results indicate that water masses primarily control mesopelagic community composition. Through co-occurrence network inference and analysis, we identified signature communities strongly associated with OMZ eco-regions. Mesopelagic communities appear to be constrained by a combination of factors compared to epipelagic communities. Thus, variations in a given abiotic factor may cause different responses in sunlit and dark ocean communities. This study expands our knowledge about the ecology of planktonic organisms inhabiting the mesopelagic zone.

Abstract: Satellite remote sensing from space is a powerful way to monitor the global dynamics of marine plankton. Previous research has focused on developing models to predict the size or taxonomic groups of phytoplankton. Here we present an approach to identify representative communities from a global plankton network that included both zooplankton and phytoplankton and using global satellite observations to predict their biogeography. Six representative plankton communities were identified from a global co-occurrence network inferred using a novel rDNA 18S V4 planetary-scale eukaryotic metabarcoding dataset. Machine learning techniques were then applied to train a model that predicted these representative communities from satellite data. The model showed an overall 67% accuracy in the prediction of the representative communities. The prediction based on 17 satellite-derived parameters showed better performance than based only on temperature and/or the concentration of chlorophyll a. The trained model allowed to predict the global spatiotemporal distribution of communities over 19-years. Our model exhibited strong seasonal changes in the community compositions in the subarctic-subtropical boundary regions, which were consistent with previous field observations. This network-oriented approach can easily be extended to more comprehensive models including prokaryotes as well as viruses.

Abstract: International audience; Aim : Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) population genetics has been a historical field centralizing data resource. HLA genetics databases typically facilitate access to frequencies of allele, haplotype, and genotype format information. Among many resources, the Allele Frequency Net Database (AFND) is a typical centralized repository that allows users to research and analyze immune gene frequencies in different populations around the world. With the massive increase in medical data and the strengthening of data governance laws, the proposal for a new distributed and secure model for the historical centralization method in population genetics has become important. In this paper, a new model of HLA population genetic resources, an alternative distributed version of HLA databases has been developed. It allows users to perform the same research and analysis with other remote sites without sharing their original data and monitoring data access.Methods : This new version uses the Master/Worker distributed model and offers distributed algorithms for the calculation of allelic frequencies, haplotypic frequencies and for individual genotypic calculations. The new model was evaluated on a distributed testbed for experiment-driven research Grid’5000 and hasobtained good results of accuracy and execution time compared to the original centralized scheme used by researchers.Results : The results show that distributed algorithm applied to HLA population genetics resources enables usage control and enables enforcing the security framework of the data-owning institution. It gives the same results for all counting methods in population immunogenetics. With the same frequencies’ estimations, it yields a much quicker computation time in many cases, in particular for large samples.Conclusions : Distributing previously centralized resources is an interesting perspective enhancing better control of data sharing.

Abstract: International audience; A hyperspectral image provides fine details about the scene under analysis, due to its multiple bands. However, the resulting high dimensionality in the feature space may render a classification task unreliable, mainly due to overfitting and the Hughes phenomenon. In order to attenuate such problems, one can resort to dimensionality reduction (DR). Thus, this paper proposes a new DR algorithm, which performs an unsupervised band selection technique following a clustering approach. More specifically, the data set was split into a predefined number of clusters, after which the bands were iteratively selected based on the parameters of a separating hyperplane, which provided the best separation in the feature space, in a one-versus-all scenario. Then, a fine-tuning of the initially selected bands took place based on the separability of clusters. A comparison with five other state-of-the-art frameworks shows that the proposed method achieved the best classification results in 60% of the experiments.

Abstract: Piping inspection robots play an essential role for industries as they can reduce human effort and pose a lesser risk to their lives. Generally, the locomotion techniques of these robots can be classified into mechanical and bioinspired. By using slot-follower leg mechanisms, DC-motors, and control units, a rigid caterpillar type inspection robot was designed and developed at LS2N, France . This rigid prototype helped in identifying the static forces required to accomplish good contact forces with the pipeline walls. In order to work inside curvatures, a tensegrity mechanism that uses three tension springs and a passive universal joint was introduced between each module of this robot. The optimal parameters of the robot assembly were identified by considering a preload of the cables, which ensured the stability of the entire robot. However, under static conditions, there exist some forces on the robot, especially on the tensegrity mechanism when one end of the leg mechanism is clamped with the pipeline walls. These forces are dominant when the orientation of the pipeline is horizontal. The objective of this article is to understand the effect of the stiffness of the spring on the static stability of the tensegrity mechanism under the self-weight of the robot assembly.

However, its applicability to dysmorphic bodies has not been explored yet and remains uncertain due to the requirement to provide incongruent visuomotor sensations. In this, paper, we studied the effect of ST stimulation on dysmorphic hands via haptic retargeting, as compared to a classical external-touch (ET) stimulation, on the SoBO. Our results indicate that ST can induce similar levels of dysmorphic SoBO than ET stimulation, but that some types of dysmorphism might decrease the ST stimulation accuracy due to the nature of the re-targeting that they induce.

Abstract: International audience; Interest in 4D blood flow MRI grows due to its ability to image the anatomic shape and the three velocity components within a volume along the cardiac cycle. However, some biomarkers' quantification from these data can be inaccurate due to the low resolution of the images. The reference method to improve the spatial resolution numerically is to run computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations in order to deduce the associated images in a higher resolution grid. However, such approaches induce complex time-consuming steps and require precise estimates of the vessel wall and the inlet velocity. In this work, an original segmentation-free superresolution (SR) solution is proposed using an inverse problem resolution approach by the minimization of a compound criterion involving three terms, a mechanical term based on Navier-Stokes equations, and a velocity smoothness promoting term, and a spatially weighted data fidelity term. The proposed solution has been validated regarding estimation error and computation time on simulated data and experimental acquisition from a phantom. Super-resolved velocity reconstruction demonstrates promising performance, even without segmentation knowledge, compared to state-of-the-art solutions.

Abstract: International audience; Highfidelity360 images enhance user experience and offer realistic representations for architectural design studies. Specifically, VR and hyper-realistic imaging technologies can be helpful tools to study daylight in architectural places thanks to the high level of immersion and its ability to create perceptually accurate and faithful scene representations.In this paper, we present a novel method for collecting and processing physically calibrated 360◦ stereoscopic high-dynamic range images of daylit indoor places. The future dataset aims to provide a higher degree of realism, a wide range of various luminous interior spaces supplied with information on the physical characterization of the space. This paper presents the first applications of this method on different places and discusses challenges for assessing visual perception in these images. In the near future, this dataset will be publicly available for architectural as well as multimedia studies.

Abstract: The ever-increasing number of available microbial genomes and metagenomes provide new opportunities to investigate the links between niche partitioning and genome evolution in the ocean, notably for the abundant and ubiquitous marine picocyanobacteria Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus. Here, by combining metagenome analyses of the Tara Oceans dataset with comparative genomics, including phyletic patterns and genomic context of individual genes from 256 reference genomes, we first showed that picocyanobacterial communities thriving in different niches possess distinct gene repertoires. We then managed to identify clusters of adjacent genes that display specific distribution patterns in the field (CAGs) and are thus potentially involved in the adaptation to particular environmental niches. Several CAGs are likely involved in the uptake or incorporation of complex organic forms of nutrients, such as guanidine, cyanate, cyanide, pyrimidine or phosphonates, which might be either directly used by cells, for e.g. the biosynthesis of proteins or DNA, or degraded into inorganic nitrogen and/or phosphorus forms. We also highlight the frequent presence of CAGs involved in polysaccharide capsule biosynthesis in Synechococcus populations thriving in both nitrogen- and phosphorus-depleted areas, which are absent in low-iron regions, suggesting that the complexes they encode may be too energy-consuming for picocyanobacteria thriving in these areas. In contrast, Prochlorococcus populations thriving in iron-depleted areas specifically possess an alternative respiratory terminal oxidase, potentially involved in the reduction of Fe(III) into Fe(II). Together, this study provides insights into how these key members of the phytoplankton community might behave in response to ongoing global change.Significance StatementPicocyanobacteria face various environmental conditions in the ocean and numerous studies have shown that genetically distinct ecotypes colonize different niches. Yet the functional basis of their adaptation remains poorly known, essentially due to the large number of genes of yet unknown function, many of which have little or no beneficial effect on fitness. Here, by combining comparative genomics and metagenomics approaches, we have identified not only single genes but also entire gene clusters, potentially involved in niche adaptation. Although being sometimes present in only one or a few sequenced strains, they occur in a large part of the population in specific ecological niches and thus constitute precious targets for elucidating the biochemical function of yet unknown niche-related genes.

Abstract: International audience; The outbreak of extraordinary disruptive events, e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic, has greatly impacted the orderly operation in global supply chains (SCs), and may lead to the SC breakdown. Regulatory actions, such as government interventions during the pandemic, can greatly mitigate the disruption propagation (i.e., the ripple effect) and improve SC viability. However, existing works that focus on the disruption propagation management have not considered the possibility of such interventions. Motivated by the fact, in this study, we investigate a new disruption propagation management problem in a multi-echelon SC with limited intervention budget. The aim is to minimize disruption risk measured by the disrupted probability of target participants in the SC. For the problem, a novel approach, combining the Causal Bayesian Network (CBN), the do-calculus and the mathematical programming, is developed. Specially, two mixed-integer non-linear programming models are constructed to determine appropriate interventions. To enhance the proposed mathematical models, two valid inequalities are proposed. Then, a problem-specific genetic algorithm (GA) is developed for handling large-scale problem instances. Numerical experiments on a case study and randomly generated instances are conducted to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed models, the valid inequalities and the GA. Based on experiment analysis, managerial insights are drawn.

Abstract: This paper investigates the effects of firm-level gender equality bargaining on the motherhood penalty using French administrative data. To tackle the endogeneity issue, we exploit the 2010 reform that introduced financial penalties for firms with 50 employees or more not complying with their obligation of negotiating on gender equality. This change led to a strong acceleration of gender equality bargaining after 2010 but only for firms with 50 employees or more. As a consequence, women who had their first child in concerned firms after 2010 are more likely to be employed in firms covered by a text related to gender equality. Controlling for firms' size effect and time trends as well as a set of other individuals' and firms' characteristics, we identify the causal effect of gender equality bargaining on earnings impact of motherhood. Our estimates show that forcing firms to promote measures related to gender equality has reinforced the motherhood penalty. While the causal effect of this reform is close to zero just after the first child birth, it turns out to be significantly negative 5 years after. Our results suggest that some measures mentioned in GE texts, especially those favouring work-life balance, may act as an indirect discrimination towards mothers.

Abstract: International audience; Many gene regulatory networks have periodic behavior, for instance the cell cycle or the circadian clock. Therefore, the study of formal methods to analyze limit cycles in mathematical models of gene regulatory networks is of interest. In this work, we study a pre-existing hybrid modeling framework (HGRN) which extends René Thomas' widespread discrete modeling. We propose a new formal method to nd all limit cycles that are simple and deterministic, and analyze their stability, that is, the ability of the model to converge back to the cycle after a small perturbation. Up to now, only limit cycles in two dimensions (with two genes) have been studied; our work lls this gap by proposing a generic approach applicable in higher dimensions. For this, the hybrid states are abstracted to consider only their borders, in order to enumerate all simple abstract cycles containing possible concrete trajectories. Then, a Poincaré map is used, based on the notion of transition matrix of the concrete continuous dynamics inside these abstract paths. We successfully applied this method on existing models: three HGRNs of negative feedback loops with 3 components, and a HGRN of the cell cycle with 5 components.

Abstract: International audience; Two recent results on earthquake control are summarized. A simplified model of an earthquake phenomenon is addressed by means of a cascade system of a 1D wave equation, representing the fault slip and wave propagation, and a 1D diffusion equation, representing the actuator dynamics as a diffusion process. In order to avoid a fast slip (earthquakelike behaviour), the control is designed to follow a slow reference. The control strategies are presented separately for both Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). For the wave PDE, a homogeneous boundary tracking control is developed to achieve exponential Input to State Stability (eISS) of the error closedloop dynamics. For the diffusion PDE, Proportional Integral (PI) and a discontinuous integral term are coupled to exponentially stabilize the error origin despite model uncertainties and perturbations. Simulations are additionally conducted to support the robustness and stability properties of the proposed control algorithms, by separately, obtaining critical remarks that will lead to the design of the single control for the cascade system in a future stage.
