Tunable piezoelectric metasurfaces have been proposed as a means of adaptively steering incident elastic waves for various applications in vibration mitigation and control. Bonding piezoelectric material to thin structures introduces electromechanical coupling, enabling structural dynamics to be altered via tunable electric shunts connected across each unit cell. For example, by carefully calibrating the inductive shunts, it is possible to implement the discrete phase shifts necessary for gradient-based waveguiding behaviors. However, experimental validations of localized phase shifting are challenging due to the narrow bandgap of local resonators, resulting in poor transmission of incident waves and high sensitivity to transient noise. These factors, in combination with the difficulties in experimental circuitry synthesis, can lead to significant variability of data acquired within the bandgap operating region. This paper presents a systematic approach for extracting localized phase shifts by taking advantage of the inherent correlation between the incident and transmitted wavefronts. During this procedure, matched filtering greatly reduces noise in the transmitted signal when operating in or near bandgap frequencies. Experimental results demonstrate phase shifts as large as −170° within the locally resonant bandgap, with an average 28% reduction in error relative to a direct time domain measurement of phase, enabling effective comparison of the dispersive behavior with corresponding analytical and finite element models. In addition to demonstrating the tunable waveguide characteristics of a piezoelectric metasurface, this technique can easily be extended to validate localized phase shifting of other elastic waveguiding metasurfaces. Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (FINCH) can achieve high-precision and non-scanning 3D imaging. However, as a holographic imaging technology, the huge bandwidth requirements and the amount of holographic data transmitted have always been one of the important factors limiting its application. In addition, the hardware cost of pixel array-based CCD or CMOS imaging is very high under high resolution or specific wavelength conditions. Accordingly, a single-pixel Fresnel incoherent correlation holography (SP-FINCH) compressed imaging method is proposed, which replaces pixel array detector with single-pixel detector and designs a Trumpet network to achieve low-cost and high-resolution imaging. Firstly, a modified FINCH imaging system is constructed and data acquisition is carried out using a single-pixel detector. Secondly, a Trumpet network is constructed to directly map the relationship between one-dimensional sampled data and two-dimensional image in an end-to-end manner. Moreover, by comparing the reconstructed images using neural network with that using commonly used single-pixel reconstruction methods, the results indicate that the proposed SP-FINCH compressed imaging method can significantly improve the quality of image reconstruction at lower sampling rate and achieve imaging without phase-shifting operation. Grating (moiré) interferometry is one of the well-known methods for full-field in-plane displacement and strain measurement. There are many design solutions for grating interferometers, including systems with a microinterferometric waveguide head. This article proposes a modification to the conventional waveguide interferometer head, enabling the implementation of a polarization fringe phase shift for automatic fringe pattern analysis. This article presents both the theoretical considerations associated with the proposed solution and its experimental verification, along with the concept of in-plane displacement/strain sensing using the described head. Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) has become a vital tool in bioimaging, offering precise measurements of wavefront distortion and, thus, of key cellular metabolism metrics, such as dry mass and density. However, only a few QPI applications have been demonstrated in optically thick specimens, where scattering increases background and reduces contrast. Building upon the concept of structured illumination interferometry, we introduce Gradient Retardance Optical Microscopy (GROM) for QPI of both thin and thick samples. GROM transforms any standard Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) microscope into a QPI platform by incorporating a liquid crystal retarder into the illumination path, enabling independent phase-shifting of the DIC microscope's sheared beams. GROM greatly simplifies related configurations, reduces costs, and eradicates energy losses in parallel imaging modalities, such as fluorescence. We successfully tested GROM on a diverse range of specimens, from microbes and red blood cells to optically thick (~ 300 μm) plant roots without fixation or clearing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cloud shadows can be detected in the radiance measurements of the TROPOMI instrument on board the Sentinel-5P satellite due to its high spatial resolution, and could possibly affect its air quality products. The cloud shadow induced signatures are, however, not always apparent and may depend on various cloud and scene parameters. Hence, the quantification of the cloud shadow impact requires the analysis of large data sets. Here we use the cloud shadow detection algorithm DARCLOS to detect cloud shadow pixels in the TROPOMI absorbing aerosol index (AAI) product over Europe during 8 months. For every shadow pixel, we automatically select cloud- and shadow-free neighbour pixels, in order to estimate the cloud shadow induced signature. In addition, we simulate the measured cloud shadow impact on the AAI with our newly developed 3D radiative transfer algorithm MONKI. Both the measurements and simulations show that the average cloud shadow impact on the AAI is close to zero (0.06 and 0.16, respectively). However, the top-of-atmosphere reflectance ratio between 340 and 380 nm, which is used to compute the AAI, is significantly increased in 95 % of the shadow pixels. So, cloud shadows are bluer than surrounding non-shadow pixels. Our simulations explain that the traditional AAI formula intrinsically already corrects for this cloud shadow effect, via the lower retrieved scene albedo. This cancellation of cloud shadow signatures is not always perfect, sometimes yielding second order low and high biases in the AAI which we also successfully reproduce with our simulations. We show that the magnitude of those second order cloud shadow effects depends on various cloud parameters which are difficult to determine for the shadows measured with TROPOMI. We conclude that a potential cloud shadow correction strategy for the TROPOMI AAI would therefore be complicated if not unnecessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variations in the coupling coefficient of loosely coupled transformers and dynamic loads have a significant impact on the overall performance of bidirectional inductive power transfer (BIPT) systems. However, a wide range of load and coupling coefficient variations are common in the actual charging process, which may cause the converter on both sides to operate in a hard switching state, resulting in switching noise, reduced efficiency, and potential safety concerns. In this paper, a triple-phase-shift control (TPSC) strategy is proposed to study the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operating range and constant-voltage output (CVO) characteristics of the double-side-LCC (DS-LCC) topology. To ensure a CVO over the wide range of coupling coefficient variations, a dual-phase-shift control is introduced for AC voltage matching. Based on this, the third phase-shift angle control between the converters on both sides is introduced to ensure the ZVS realization. Meanwhile, the time-domain model is developed to analyze the rationality of the proposed third phase-shift angle and the ZVS operating range. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed TPSC strategy is validated through a 1.5 kW experimental prototype with an air gap of 100–150 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phase-shifting interferometry is one of the optical measurement techniques that improves accuracy and resolution by incorporating a controlled phase shift into conventional optical interferometry. In this study, a four-step phase-shifting interferometer is developed to measure the spatiotemporal distribution of acoustic density oscillations of the gas next to a rigid plate. The experimental apparatus consists of a polarizing Mach–Zehnder interferometer with a polarization camera capable of capturing four polarization directions in one shot image and it is used to measure the magnitude and the phase of density fluctuations through a duct of rectangular cross section connected to a loudspeaker. The results are compared with the well-established thermoacoustic theory describing the thermal coupling between acoustic oscillations and rigid boundaries, and the results show a very good agreement for various ratios of the (frequency-dependent) thermal boundary layer thickness to the plate spacing. This measurement technique could be advantageously employed to analyze more complex heat transfer processes involving the coupling of acoustic oscillations with rigid boundaries. In this paper, a genetic‐based synthesis approach for an impedance matching section based on a composite right‐/left‐handed (CRLH) transmission line model called CRLH transmission line impedance matching section (CRLHTLIMS) in viewpoint of transmission phase shift and noise figure is newly presented. To find the unknown values of right‐/left‐handed inductances and capacitances of a CRLHTLIMS, a type of global optimization algorithm called continuous parameter genetic algorithm is used. The length, transmission phase shift, and noise figure of the CRLHTLIMS are computed by using simple equations. Different examples for a uniform CRLHTLIMS are given. According to the results, this approach is an easy and effective way for the synthesis of transmission line impedance matching sections in viewpoint of transmission phase shift and noise figure. Multi-level inverters are widely employed to generate new energy because of their huge capacity and benefits in sound control performance. One of the critical areas of study for multi-level inverters is control strategy research. In this study, the control strategy for a multi-level inverter—which is frequently employed in HVDC and FACTS systems—is designed. An asymmetrical D.C. voltage source is supplied to create the appropriate output voltage waveform with fewer total harmonic distortions (THDs) at the output voltage and current waveforms. In this work, the pulse width modulation techniques of POD (phase opposition disposition) and APOD (alternative phase opposition disposition) MC PWM are applied to a multi-level inverter to generate the seven-level output voltage waveform. This study presents an enhanced variable carrier frequency APOD control approach that can successfully lower the overall harmonic distortion rate. The design and completion of the phase-shifting POD and APOD control strategies are followed by an analysis and comparison of the THD situation under various switching frequencies and a simulation and verification of the control strategy using MATLAB simulation. The TI DSP-based control approach has been programmed. The APOD technique increases the output voltage's THD to 18.27%, while the output current waveform's THD is reduced to 15.67% by utilizing the APOD PWM technique. Using the POD PWM approach increases the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the voltage waveform by 18.06% and the output current waveform's THD by 15.45%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid live-cell hyperspectral imaging at large fields of view (FOVs) and high cell confluency remains challenging for conventional vibrational spectroscopy-based microscopy technologies. At the same time, imaging at high cell confluency and large FOVs is important for proper cell function and statistical significance of measurements, respectively. Here, we introduce phase-shifting mid-infrared optothermal microscopy (PSOM), which interprets molecular-vibrational information as the optical path difference induced by mid-infrared absorption and can take snapshot vibrational images over broad excitation areas at high live-cell confluency. By means of phase-shifting, PSOM suppresses noise to a quarter of current optothermal microscopy modalities to allow capturing live-cell vibrational images at FOVs up to 50 times larger than state of the art. PSOM also reduces illumination power flux density (PFD) down to four orders of magnitude lower than other conventional vibrational microscopy methods, such as coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), thus considerably decreasing the risk of cell photodamage. Objective. To enable practical interferometry-based phase contrast CT using standard incoherent x-ray sources, we propose an imaging system where the analyzer grating is replaced by a high-resolution detector. Since there is no need to perform multiple exposures (with the analyzer grating at different positions) at each scan angle, this scheme is compatible with continuous-rotation CT apparatus, and has the potential to reduce patient radiation dose and patient motion artifacts. Approach. Grating-based x-ray interferometry is a well-studied technique for imaging soft tissues and highly scattering objects embedded in such tissues. In addition to the traditional x-ray absorption-based image, this technique allows reconstruction of the object phase and small-angle scattering information. When using conventional incoherent, polychromatic, hard x-ray tubes as sources, three gratings are usually employed. To sufficiently resolve the pattern generated in these interferometers with contemporary x-ray detectors, an analyzer grating is used, and consequently multiple images need to be acquired for each view angle. This adds complexity to the imaging system, slows image acquisition and thus increases sensitivity to patient motion, and is not dose efficient. By simulating image formation based on wave propagation, and proposing a novel phase retrieval algorithm based on a virtual grating, we assess the potential of a analyzer-grating-free system to overcome these limitations. Main results. We demonstrate that the removal of the analyzer-grating can produce equal image contrast-to-noise ratio at reduced dose (by a factor of 5), without prolonging scan duration. Significance. By demonstrating that an analyzer-free CT system, in conjuction with an efficient phase retrieval algorithm, can overcome the prohibitive dose and workflow penalties associated grating-stepping, an alternative path towards realizing clinical inteferometric CT appears possible. The transport of sulfate-bearing brines is closely relevant to mineralization of sulfide deposits as metal-sulfate complexes exist in hydrothermal fluids. Liquid-liquid phase separation evidently occurs in various metal-sulfate systems with transport and precipitating different from homogeneous fluids. Previous studies have revealed a new species with a Raman peak at ~1020 cm-1 in rich concentration phase of liquid-liquid phase separated MgSO4 solution, and it was interpreted as chain structure polymers. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) and autocorrelation functions for frequency calculation have been performed to disclose the speciation. The results show that more Mg2+ ions surrounding a SO42- anion lead to higher wavenumber of Raman peaks, which indicates the formation of complicate clusters with ion associations similar to kieserite. Besides, the splitting peaks of v-980 Raman bands at ~980, 990, and 1005 cm-1 in homogeneous solution represent more monodentate Mg-Os (Os: O of SO42-) associations instead of certain species, which favors the formation of prenucleation clusters. Furthermore, bidentate Mg-SO4 ligand is less stable than monodentate ligands at 543 K by applying free energy calculations. Our findings give atomic level recognition of concentrated phase in liquid-liquid phase separated MgSO4 fluids and theoretical explanation of the 980 cm-1 Raman peak shifting, which will further inspire understandings on nucleation processes of hydrated sulfate minerals and Raman spectra resolving of other sulfate systems. A correlation holography technique for quantitative phase imaging from scattered depolarized light is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To implement this technique, we exploit the depolarization of scattered light with the higher-order Stokes correlation. The higher-order Stokes correlation along with the two-step phase-shifting method is utilized to retrieve the complex Fourier coefficient, this subsequently supports the recovery of the phase in the correlation holography with the fourth-order correlation. A detailed theoretical framework is developed and is also supported by numerical simulation and experimental tests. The applicability of the proposed technique is experimentally demonstrated by quantitatively reconstructing different phase objects from the scattered depolarized light. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel z‐scanning‐free epi‐detected super‐resolution two‐photon fluorescence tomography (TPFT) technique enabling super‐resolution deeper tissue 3D imaging is reported. To accomplish this, a unique method is conceived by generating the phase‐shifted optical beatings of Bessel beams (PS‐OB3) with a spatial light modulator (SLM) to break the diffraction limit for enhancing both the lateral and axial resolutions as well as improving the penetration depth in TPFT for super‐resolution deeper tissue imaging. By electronically varying the optical beating frequency and the phase shifts of the beating patterns through SLM, the depth‐resolved TPF signals about the volumetric tissue are encoded in the spatial frequency domain and hence, a series of depth‐resolved TPF images can be retrieved by implementing inverse fast Fourier transform without a need of mechanical depth‐scanning. PS‐OB3 TPFT provides ≈1.3‐ and 2‐fold improvements in lateral and axial resolutions in comparison with conventional point‐scan TPF imaging. It is also illustrated that the epi‐detected PS‐OB3 TPFT imaging with inherent scattering‐resilient properties of the Bessel beams employed gives over 2‐fold improvement in imaging depth in porcine brain tissue compared to conventional point‐scan Gaussian beam TPF imaging. The z‐scanning‐free optical sectioning ability of PS‐OB3 method developed in TPFT is universal, which can be readily extended to practically any other nonlinear optical imaging modalities for super‐resolution deeper 3D imaging in biological and biomedical tissues. The conventional two-beam interferometry adopts only one expression about plasma density and thickness because only fringe shift is recognized from the recorded fringes. Therefore, the prior hypotheses that the plasma is thickness-uniform or circular symmetry have to be introduced to separate them, which limits the applied range and accuracy of the conventional method. This paper found that the laser beam will be deflected if the thickness changes, leading the recorded fringes to be defocused. As a result, a new expression relying on recognizing the defocus parameter of the recorded fringes is derived, and a pointwise separation algorithm to separate density and thickness is proposed based on the two expressions. The heuristic homogenization approach is intensively employed to characterize electromagnetic metamaterials (MMs). The effective parameters are extracted within this framework using the Nicolson–Ross–Weir (NRW) method. Special attention must be devoted to handling this procedure because of the branch ambiguity issue affecting it, i.e., the lack of uniqueness in the evaluation of the effective refractive index n e f f rooted in the use of the multivalued complex logarithm to invert the Airy–Fresnel relation. Over the years, several techniques based on the phase-unwrapping approach have been introduced, but without any theoretical justification. In this paper, we aim to clarify the theoretical connection between the phase unwrapping method and the analytic continuation theory framework. Furthermore, three-phase-unwrapping approaches, which descend directly from the theory we discussed, are compared to identify which approach is best suited to reconstruct the complex refractive index of metamaterials when the NRW method is applicable. To assess the thickness homogeneity of a mask blank using wavelength-modulating interferometry, novel methods for determining and verifying the thickness homogeneity using triple-surface interferometry are proposed. First, based on the optical path difference in triple-surface interferometry, the phases of main harmonics were defined, and the determination method of the back thickness variation was derived. Next, a verification method for thickness assessment was derived using the theoretical formula of the triple-surface interferometry. And then, the thickness assessment of the mask blank was conducted by wavelength-modulating Fizeau interferometer. The thickness homogeneity of the mask blank was determined by the phases of main harmonics extracted using harmonic interferometric-iterative analysis. Detuning errors limit the accuracy of phase extraction in phase-shifting interferometry (PSI). To improve this accuracy, the systems to control the phase shifter dispositive must be highly accurate, involving high technology, exhaustive calibration, high cost, and constant maintenance. This manuscript presents a method for improving the accuracy of the phase step generated at the Fourier plane by rotating and displacing the grating in a double-aperture common-path interferometer. It is demonstrated that both the detuning errors and the phase extraction uncertainty decrease with the grating rotation angle. The experimental implementation is very simple, as it does not require any sophisticated mechanical system to improve the accuracy, no exhaustive calibration, and no additional mechanical and optical dispositive. With the present approach, the PSI method could be achieved very simply and with high accuracy by using a low-accuracy actuator. Taking advantage of multimaterial additive manufacturing, this work demonstrates a kind of polarization‐maintaining metasurface (MS) for spin‐decoupled beam shaping. The wavefronts of the two spin states, i.e., the left‐hand circular polarization (LHCP) and the right‐hand circular polarization (RHCP), can be independently manipulated while the output spin state remains the same as the input. The meta‐atom is implemented with dual‐polarized antennas at the top and the bottom with phase delay lines connecting them. The dual‐polarized antenna on the receiving side is fixed to receive the LHCP/RHCP incident waves, while the dual‐polarized transmitting antenna is rotated, providing the opposite phase shifts for the LHCP and RHCP. The absolute value of the phase shift is the same as the transmitting antenna's rotation angle. Meanwhile, varying the length of phase delay lines introduces 2π phase shifts for both LHCP and RHCP inputs. Thus, combining the two phase‐shifting degrees of freedom, the LHCP and RHCP wavefronts can be independently controlled while the polarization is not flipped after transmitting through the MS. One MS produces vortex beams with different topological charges for LHCP and RHCP. The other achieves spin‐decoupled focusing. Complex structure formation inside or through turbid media is a challenging task due to refractive index inhomogeneity, random light scattering, and speckle noise formation. In this article, we have coupled the data regression model in the R-squared metric and used its advantages as a fitness function in the genetic algorithm to advance the resolution and structural uniformity. As a compatible system with the binary genetic algorithm, we have presented a cost-effective iterative wavefront shaping system-design with binary phase modulation using an affordable ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) based binary-phase spatial light modulator (SLM). R-squared metric in the genetic algorithm is analyzed to optimize the binary phase mask, and the prototype system based on iterative binary phase modulation has been validated with a 120-grit ground glass diffuser and fresh chicken tissues of thickness 307 μ m and 812 μ m . The detailed results show that the proposed cost-effective wavefront shaping system with data regression model assisted R-squared fitness function can construct high-resolution multiple complex hetero-structures simultaneously in 3D volume using an optimized single phase-mask. High-speed train noise remains a wayside environmental issue. For accurate noise prediction, the characteristics of a moving sound source must be revealed. In this work, the frequency modulation of sound waves emitted from a high-speed moving sound source was experimentally investigated. In the experiment, the sound field around a running train model emitting a 40 kHz pure tone was measured by an optical measurement technique, parallel phase-shifting interferometry, which can visualize instantaneous sound fields. For quantitative evaluation, a lens distortion correction was also developed and adopted for the visualization results. From the measured result of a sound source moving at a running speed of 280 km/h, the frequency modulation, known as the Doppler effect, was observed, and the measured frequency agreed well with the theoretical values. A brief review of known digital speckle pattern interferometry methods for retrieving the surface displacement and deformation fields under dynamic loads is presented. A new nondestructive test method of three-step phase-shifting correlation speckle pattern interferometry to study the dynamic loads of structural materials is proposed. In this method three speckle interferograms (SIs) of the specimen surface, differing only by arbitrary unknown phase shifts, are recorded before the loading and one SI is recorded under the dynamic load. The surface displacement field under dynamic loading is determined using the obtained SIs. Two algorithms for the implementation of the method are proposed. They use an integrating bucket technique to record SIs and make it possible to determine the phase maps of the surface displacement fields at any moment of applying the dynamic load. This paper presents a differential complementary metal oxide semiconductor inductor‐capacitor voltage controlled oscillator (LC‐VCO). The VCO is adopted from the gate‐to‐source capacitor feedback Colpitts VCO which has the advantage of large value of negative conductance. Due to the large negative conductance, the VCO has a more reliable startup oscillation at the lower currents. The main characteristics of the VCO such as negative conductance, oscillation frequency and phase noise are discussed and analysed. The value of parameters in this circuit have been determined using Non‐dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA‐II) to have the optimum performance. The designed VCO oscillates at 2.76 GHz under a supply voltage of 1.4 V. Power dissipation of the proposed VCO is 873 μW which is significantly lower than that of some other VCOs. Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has been widely used for 3D reconstruction, surface measurement, and reverse engineering. However, if the surface of an object has a high reflectivity, overexposure can easily occur. Image saturation caused by overexposure can lead to an incorrect intensity of the captured pattern images, resulting in phase and measurement errors of FPP. To address this issue, we propose a phase retrieval method for the 3D shape measurement of high-reflectivity surfaces based on π phase-shifting fringes. Our method only requires eight images to be projected, including three single-frequency three-step phase-shifting patterns and one pattern used to provide phase unwrapping constraints, called conventional patterns, as well as the π phase-shifting patterns corresponding to the four conventional patterns, called supplemental patterns. Saturated pixels of conventional fringes are replaced by unsaturated pixels in supplemental fringes to suppress phase retrieval errors. We analyzed all 16 replacement cases of fringe patterns and provided calculation methods for unwrapped phases. The main advantages of our method are as follows: (1) By combining the advantages of the stereo phase unwrapping (SPU) algorithm, the number of projected fringes is reduced. (2) By utilizing the phase unwrapping constraint provided by the fourth fringe pattern, the accuracy of SPU is improved. R-squared metric in the genetic algorithm is analyzed to optimize the binary phase mask, and the prototype system based on iterative binary phase modulation has been validated with a 120-grit ground glass diffuser and fresh chicken tissues of thickness 307 μ m and 812 μ m . Interferometric techniques are widely used to obtain the real-time phenomena in a majority of applications considering its advantages of non-intrusively, mapping changes in path length as small as the wavelength of the light source used, etc. Interferometers often recorded the changes in the path length in the form of fringe orientation. Depending upon the complexity of the phenomena under observation, interferometric fringes are formed from simple fringe ordinations to complex fringe structures. Extracting phase map from these fringe patterns are highly crucial to evaluate the phase change and the corresponding property change. In order to use the interferometers in its full potential, it is necessary to develop robust and accurate algorithms for phase extraction. In this paper, we discuss 2-D Hilbert transforms (HT) and 2-D continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) techniques to analyze fringe patterns of different orientation and inter-fringe spacing. Simulated interferograms were used to generate implemented fringe patterns with different orientation and spacing. MATLAB software is used to generate these simulated image. In order to check the efficiency of the mentioned algorithm, a white Gaussian filter with different noise levels (0%, 5%, 10%) has been added to the simulated interferograms. Interferometric fringes with noise is a common phenomenon in many transient and turbulent processes. Moreover, the in-build noise in optical configuration and external noises in the testing environment also adds to the noise. Hence, it is necessary to test the accuracy of algorithm for enhanced noises. The results show that the HT algorithm was difficult to implement on complex patterns and was also difficult to implement for a high degree of noise interference. The two-dimensional CWT, on the other hand, has good performance on complex striped patterns and can handle noise disturbances with a good degree of accuracy. The continuous wavelet transform is insensitive to noise interference patterns and gives accurate results. The processing time is very short and it can handle both simple and complex fringe patterns within a very short period of time. In this work, a wavefront division interferometry method for determining the topological charge (l) of vortex beams (VB) is proposed and utilized for the detection of beam displacement. The method uses Fresnel biprism as a single element to determine vortex charge for up to l = ±10. Additionally, the interference pattern configuration is utilized to detect beam displacement in orthogonal directions. To accurately determine the shift in pattern due to beam displacement, a fringe scanning algorithm based on image correlation is proposed. The algorithm quantifies the fringe shift in terms of pixel units that is used to estimate the beam displacement. Sensitivity of 80 px/0.5 mm beam displacement along the x-direction is achieved with the system. The proposed method is single ended that can be integrated with optical assemblies for fast VB recognition. The acquisition of precise deformation data, including the entirety of the subsidence basin resulting from subterranean mining operations, assumes critical significance in the context of surface impairment monitoring during the course of mining activities. In light of the constraints associated with InSAR technology when applied to the surveillance of expansive deformation gradient mining regions, an innovative approach is advanced herein for InSAR deformation phase retrieval. This approach integrates a reference phase, derivable through a variety of means, including pre-existing models or measurements. Initially, the reference deformation phase is subjected to subtraction from the wrapped InSAR deformation phase, culminating in the derivation of the wrapped phase indicative of the residual phase. Notably, it is posited that the fringe density characterizing the wrapped phase of the residual phase is theoretically diminished in comparison to that of the InSAR wrapped phase. This reduction in complexity in phase unwrapping ensues as a direct consequence. Subsequent to this, the phase retrieval process is effectuated through the summation of the reference phase and the unwrapped phase pertaining to the residual phase. The study harnesses Sentinel-1A and ALOS PALSAR-2 data, employing the PIM-predicted outcomes and GNSS-RTK monitoring outcomes as reference phases for the execution of phase retrieval experiments in two designated study areas. The computation of subsidence is subsequently realized through the combination of the displacement vector depression angle model and the retrieved phase, with the accuracy thereof corroborated through the utilization of leveling data. We propose a method to map the conventional optical interferometry setup into quantum circuits. The unknown phase shift inside a Mach–Zehnder interferometer in the presence of photon loss is estimated by simulating the quantum circuits. For this aim, we use the Bayesian approach in which the likelihood functions are needed, and they are obtained by simulating the appropriate quantum circuits. The precision of four different definite photon-number states of light, which all possess six photons, is compared. The measurement scheme that we have considered is counting the number of photons detected after the final beam splitter of the interferometer, and photon loss is modeled by using fictitious beam splitters in the arms of the interferometer. Our results indicate that three of the four definite photon-number states considered can have better precision than the standard interferometry limit whenever the photon loss rate is in a specific range. Traditional Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometry, insensitive to photons phase mismatch, proved to be a rugged single-photon interferometric technique. By introducing a post-beam splitter polarization-dependent delay, it is possible to recover phase-sensitive fringes, obtaining a temporal quantum eraser that maintains the ruggedness of the original HOM with enhanced sensitivity. This setup shows promising applications in biological sensing and optical metrology, where high sensitivity requirements are coupled with the necessity to keep light intensity as low as possible to avoid power-induced degradation. In this paper, we developed a highly sensitive single photon birefringence-induced delay sensor operating in the telecom range (1550 nm). Ground-based radar interferometry is capable of measuring target displacement to sub-mm accuracy. W-band ground-based radar has recently been investigated as a potential application for structural health monitoring. On the other hand, the application of W-band ground-based radar for natural slope monitoring is considered in this study due to its advantages in portability and recent cost-effective solutions. In radar interferometry, atmospheric phase screen (APS) is the most relevant phase disturbance that should be corrected for accurate displacement measurement. However, the APS effects in W-band radar interferometry have rarely been discussed. In this context, we study and evaluate the impacts of APS and its potential correction methods for 79 GHz ground-based radar interferometry using multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar. This paper presents an experimental investigation of a 79 GHz radar system using two types of field experiments conducted in an open flat field and a quarry site. In addition to the W-band radar system, a Ku-band (17 GHz) ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) system was jointly tested to compare different operating frequency bands. As one of the common techniques for measuring coseismic deformations, optical image correlation techniques are capable of overcoming the drawbacks of inadequate coherence and phase blurring which can occur in radar interferometry, as well as the problem of low spatial resolution in radar pixel offset tracking. However, the scales of the correlation window in optical image correlation techniques typically influence the results; the conventional SAR POT method faces a fundamental trade-off between the accuracy of matching and the preservation of details in the correlation window size. This study regards coseismic deformation as a two-dimensional vector, and develops a new post-processing workflow called VACI-OIC to reduce the dependence of shift estimation on the size of the correlation window. This paper takes the coseismic deformations in both the east–west and north–south directions into account at the same time, treating them as vectors, while also considering the similarity of displacement between adjacent points on the surface. Herein, the angular continuity index of the coseismic deformation vector was proposed as a more reasonable constraint condition to fuse the deformation field results obtained by optical image correlation across different correlation window. Taking the earthquake of 2021 in Maduo, China, as the study area, the deformation with the highest spatial resolution in the violent surface rupture area was determined (which could not be provided by SAR data). Compared to the results of single-scale optical correlation, the presented results were more uniform (i.e., more consistent with published results). Single-pixel detecting is suitable for wavefront reconstruction in some special wavelengths where array detectors are immature or even unavailable and/or under low light conditions. However, most of the demonstrations are generally realized by multi-step phase-shifting interferometry with a liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) that has a slow modulation speed, which limits the reconstruction speed, thus restricting practical applications of the technique. Here, we propose to use a digital-micromirror-device-(DMD)-based single-pixel off-axis common-path interferometry (SOCI) for faster wavefront reconstruction. The method utilizes passive detection based on the DMD to realize SOCI for accelerating wavefront reconstruction. As compared to the LC-SLM-based phase-shifting techniques, since the modulation speed of the DMD is hundreds of times faster than that of the LC-SLM, the DMD-based SOCI accelerates several folds of reconstruction speed further, which, thus, makes the final wavefront reconstruction three orders of magnitude faster. This study proposes a closed-form solution for the two-dimensional (2D) transient heat conduction in a rectangular cross-section of an infinite bar with space–time-dependent Dirichlet boundary conditions and heat sources. The main purpose of this study is to eliminate the limitations of the previous study and add heat sources to the heat conduction system. The restriction of the previous study is that the values of the boundary conditions and initial conditions at the four corners of the rectangular region should be zero. First, the boundary value problem of 2D heat conduction system is transformed into a dimensionless form. Second, the dimensionless temperature function is transformed so that the temperatures at the four endpoints of the boundary of the rectangular region become zero. Dividing the system into two one-dimensional (1D) subsystems and solving them by combining the proposed shifting function method with the eigenfunction expansion theorem, the complete solution in series form is obtained through the superposition of the subsystem solutions. Three examples are studied to illustrate the efficiency and reliability of the method. For convenience, the space–time-dependent functions used in the examples are considered separable in the space–time domain. The linear, parabolic, and sine functions are chosen as the space-dependent functions, and the sine, cosine, and exponential functions are chosen as the time-dependent functions. The solutions in the literature are used to verify the correctness of the solutions derived using the proposed method, and the results are completely consistent. The parameter influence of the time-dependent function of the boundary conditions and heat sources on the temperature variation is also investigated. The time-dependent function includes exponential type and harmonic type. For the exponential time-dependent function, a smaller decay constant of the time-dependent function leads to a greater temperature drop. [Display omitted] Acoustic metamaterials (AMs) for sound wave manipulation have attracted significant attention due to their fascinating functionalities, such as anomalous reflection/refraction, acoustic cloaking, sound absorption, acoustic imaging, etc. The acoustic phase-gradient metamaterials possess the capability of wavefront manipulation, thus, are fundamental to designing these fascinating functionalities. The underlying mechanism is controlling the acoustic responses (the phase and/or amplitude) of the units by varying the parameters so that one can redirect the wavefront in the desired manner. In this article, we review the state-of-the-art on development of phase-gradient metamaterials for wavefront manipulation. The governing principles of the phase-gradient metamaterials for wave control in static and moving media are first introduced. Then, according to the unit type, the phase-gradient metamaterials are roughly classified into three categories: the locally resonant structures, the space-coiling structures and the material-filling structures. Afterwards, three representative functionalities of the gradient metamaterials are reviewed, including acoustic cloaking, sound absorption/isolation and acoustic lens. Developing effective intelligent nanocarriers is highly desirable for fluorescence imaging and therapeutic applications but remains challenging. Using a vinyl-grafted BMMs (bimodal mesoporous SiO2 materials) as a core and PAN ((2-aminoethyl)-6-(dimethylamino)-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-1,3(2H)-dione))-dispersed dual pH/thermal-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) as a shell, PAN@BMMs with strong fluorescence and good dispersibility were prepared. Their mesoporous features and physicochemical properties were extensively characterized via XRD patterns, N2 adsorption–desorption analysis, SEM/TEM images, TGA profiles, and FT-IR spectra. In particular, their mass fractal dimension (dm) features based on SAXS patterns combined with fluorescence spectra were successfully obtained to evaluate the uniformity of the fluorescence dispersions, showing that the dm values increased from 2.49 to 2.70 with an increase of the AN-additive amount from 0.05 to 1%, along with the red shifting of their fluorescent emission wavelength from 471 to 488 nm. The composite (PAN@BMMs-I-0.1) presented a densification trend and a slight decrease in peak (490 nm) intensity during the shrinking process. Its fluorescent decay profiles confirmed two fluorescence lifetimes of 3.59 and 10.62 ns. The low cytotoxicity obtained via in vitro cell survival assay and the efficient green imaging performed via HeLa cell internalization suggested that the smart PAN@BMM composites are potential carriers for in vivo imaging and therapy. Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) interferometry is a technique for very high resolution imaging and mapping of the seabed. In SAS interferometry, the seabed depth estimation performance is a function of the system, the geometry, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the filter size, equivalent to the achieved horizontal resolution. A strong driver for SNR is the imaging range and grazing angle. The variation of these parameters over a typical SAS swath gives rise to a large variation in the depth estimation performance. To mitigate the negative effect of this, we suggest to use an adaptive phase estimation filter size, such that the standard deviation of the depth estimate is proportional to the horizontal resolution. We demonstrate the suggested adaptive filter size method on long range data collected using a HUGIN Superior autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) equipped with a HISAS 1032 Dual receiver interferometric SAS. We report experimental results where a momentum entangled biphoton state with a Schmidt number of a few thousand is retrieved and manipulated when only one photon of the pair is transmitted through a thin scattering medium. For this purpose, the transmission matrix of the complex medium is first measured with a phase-shifting interferometry measurement method using a spatial light modulator (SLM) illuminated with a laser source. From this matrix, different phase masks are calculated and addressed on the SLM to spatially control the focusing of the laser through the complex medium. These same masks are used to manipulate the phase of the biphoton wave function transmitted by the thin diffuser in order to restore and control in the same way the momentum correlations between the far-field images of twin beams issued from strongly spatial-multi-mode spontaneous parametric down conversion. Quantitative phase imaging and measurement of surface topography and fluid dynamics for objects, especially for moving objects, is critical in various fields. Although effective, existing synchronous phase-shifting methods may introduce additional phase changes in the light field due to differences in optical paths or need specific optics to implement synchronous phase-shifting, such as the beamsplitter with additional anti-reflective coating and a micro-polarizer array. Therefore, we propose a synchronous phase-shifting method based on the Mach–Zehnder interferometer to tackle these issues in existing methods. The proposed method uses common optics to simultaneously acquire four phase-shifted digital holograms with equal optical paths for object and reference waves. Therefore, it can be used to reconstruct the phase distribution of static and dynamic objects with high precision and high resolution. In the experiment, the theoretical resolution of the proposed system was 1.064 µm while the actual resolution could achieve 1.381 µm, which was confirmed by measuring a phase-only resolution chart. Besides, the dynamic phase imaging of a moving standard object was completed to verify the proposed system's effectiveness. The experimental results show that our proposed method is suitable and promising in dynamic phase imaging and measurement of moving objects using phase-shifting digital holography. In this work, an integrated optofluidic phase-shifting element, along with an image processing algorithm, was proposed to enable quantitative analysis for microfluidic applications using a digital holographic microscopic configuration. The advantages of the proposed system lie in its compactness, that the phase-shifting element can be simultaneously fabricated with other microfluidic functional components on a single chip, its robustness to resist environmental vibrations as no mechanical movement is involved for phase-shifting, and its capability of capturing transient events of fluid dynamics for quantitative measurement. X-ray grating interferometry (XGI) provides complementary information to visualize the internal structure of an object better than conventional absorption-based imaging methods, thereby having the potential for future biomedical applications. In XGI, information retrieval is critical for qualitative and quantitative research. However, information retrieval based on the phase-stepping technique usually requires that the absolute spatial translations of these phase-stepping position series lie in the range of only a few hundred nanometers, making this technique prone to mechanical instabilities and motion artifacts. In this paper, trimodal radiography using sinusoidal phase modulating interferometry is studied. The theoretical analysis of the signal retrieval algorithm using four integrating buckets is derived, and numerical experiments are demonstrated. In the proposed method, the phase modulation is generated by shifting the grating following a sinusoidal curve while the signals are retrieved from the four frames obtained by integrating the time-varying intensity over the four quarters of the modulation period. Compared with the previously proposed method, this method is easier to implement due to relaxed requirements on the phase-shifting device; high speed and continuous data averaging will greatly promote the real applications of the X-ray grating interferometer. Interferometric imagers based on integrated optics have the advantages of miniaturization and low cost compared with traditional telescope imaging systems and are expected to be applied in the field of space target detection. Phase measurement of the complex coherence factor is crucial for the image reconstruction of interferometric imaging technology. This study discovers the effect of the phase of the complex coherence factor on the extrema of the interference fringes in the interferometric imager and proposes a method for calculating the phase difference of the complex coherence factor of two interference signals by comparing the extrema of the interferometric fringes in the area of approximate linear change in the envelope shape to obtain the phase information required for imaging. Experiments using two interferometric signals with a phase difference of π were conducted to verify the validity and feasibility of the phase difference measurement method. Compared with the existing phase measurement methods, this method does not need to calibrate the position of the zero optical path difference and can be applied to the integrated optical interferometric imager using a single-mode fiber, which also allows the imager to work in a more flexible way. In this study, a laser interferometric sensing measurement (ISM) system based on a 4R manipulator system is developed to achieve detection of mechanical targets, which aims to realize the real-time, online detection of workpieces with high precision during processing. The 4R mobile manipulator (MM) system is flexible and can move in the workshop, aiming to preliminarily track the position of the workpiece to be measured and locate it at millimeter level. The reference plane of the ISM system is driven by piezoelectric ceramics with the spatial carrier frequency realized and the interferogram obtained by a charge coupled device (CCD) image sensor. The subsequent processing of the interferogram includes fast Fourier transform (FFT), spectrum filtering, phase demodulation, tilt elimination for wave-surface, etc., so as to further restore the surface shape of the measured surface and obtain the surface quality indexes. A novel cosine banded cylindrical (CBC) filter is used to improve the FFT processing accuracy, and a bidirectional extrapolation and interpolation (BEI) technique is proposed for the preprocessing operation of real-time interferograms before FFT processing. Compared with the results from a ZYGO interferometer, the real-time online detection results show the reliability and practicability of this design. The relative error of peak–valley value reflecting the processing accuracy can reach about 0.63%, with the root-mean-square value reaching about 1.36%. This article presents a method for determining the acoustic center of a microphone from a sound field measured by optical interferometry. The acoustic center defines the equivalent point source position of a microphone serving as a sound source where the spherical waveform starts to diverge. The value is used to determine the effective distance between microphones for free-field reciprocity calibration. Conventionally, it is determined from the inverse distance law properties of a point source using the transfer function method. In this study, the acoustic center was determined from the projection of the sound field of the microphone. Parallel phase-shifting interferometry was used to measure the line integration of the sound pressure from a microphone. The acoustic center is determined as the position where the squared error between the measured data and the projection model of a point source is minimized. Experiments with the B&K 4180 (Brüel & Kjær, Nærum, Denmark) microphone were performed for frequencies from 10 to 50 kHz. The best acoustic center estimation was obtained at a microphone distance of 0 mm, with a difference of 0.17 mm to the IEC 61094-3 value and 0.36 mm to the Barrera-Figueroa et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. This paper demonstrates how to implement a vortex electromagnetic wave generation system with beam steering using only delay lines as phase-shifting elements. The system is based on uniform circular array and phased array technology. A detailed theoretical derivation is presented, which yields an input frequency matrix corresponding to each target case. Furthermore, considering the random initial phase problem of the actual phase-locked source, the above scheme is further improved in this paper. By cleverly setting the circuit structure, the influence of the initial phase inconsistency on the phase control system is filtered out. The performance is verified by analytical calculations and fullwave electromagnetic simulations, which are in good agreement with the proposed theory. The scheme proposed in this paper can completely get rid of the phase shifter and realize the free adjustment of the topological charge number/beam steering angle. The adjustment accuracy depends on the tuning accuracy of the phaselocked source, which can achieved an accuracy over 1Hz at a cost of less than six dollars, which makes it an interesting and flexible low-cost vortex electromagnetic wave generation scheme. Late sleep timing is prevalent in early childhood and a risk factor for poor behavioral and health outcomes. Sleep timing is influenced by the phase of the circadian clock, with later circadian timing linked to delayed sleep onset in young children. Light is the strongest zeitgeber of circadian timing and, in adults, evening light produces circadian phase delay in an intensity-dependent manner. The intensity-dependent circadian phase-shifting response to evening light in children, however, is currently unknown. In the present study, 33 healthy, good-sleeping children aged 3.0 to 4.9 years (M = 4.14 years, 39% male) completed a 10-day between-subjects protocol. Following 7 days of a stable sleep schedule, an in-home dim-light circadian assessment was performed. Children remained in dim-light across 3 days (55 h), with salivary melatonin collected in regular intervals throughout each evening. Phase-shifting effects of light exposure were determined via changes in the timing of the dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO) prior to (Day 8) and following (Day 10) a light exposure stimulus. On Day 9, children were exposed to a 1 h light stimulus in the hour before their habitual bedtime. Each child was randomly assigned to one intensity between 5 and 5000 lux (4.5-3276 melanopic EDI). Across light intensities, children showed significant circadian phase delays, with an average phase delay of 56.1 min (SD = 33.6 min), and large inter-individual variability. No relationship between light intensity and magnitude of the phase shift was observed. However, a greater percentage of melatonin suppression during the light exposure was associated with a greater phase delay (r = −0.73, p < 0.01). These findings demonstrate that some young children may be highly sensitive to light exposure in the hour before bedtime and suggest that the home lighting environment and its impact on circadian timing should be considered a possible contributor to behavioral sleep difficulties. A method for detecting the surface defects of high reflection objects using phase deflection is proposed. The abrupt change in the surface gradient at the defect leads to the change in the fringe phase. Therefore, Gray code combined with a four-step phase-shift method was employed to obtain the surface gradients to characterize the defects. Then, through the double surface illumination model, the relationship between illumination intensity and phase was established. The causes of periodic error interference were analyzed, and the method of adjusting the fringe width to eliminate it was proposed. GaN single crystal samples were cleaned and passivated with ruthenium solution. Photoluminescence (PL) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) were used to characterize the passivated surface. PL study showed an effective increase in band edge emission after passivation. I–V (current–voltage) and dI/dV (differential conductance) spectra measurements of GaN single crystal samples using ambient STS revealed the variation in the density of states (local), shifting of Fermi-level position, and onset/offset of valence and conduction bands. We found a significant change in I–V and dI/dV measurements after surface treatment, which means modification in surface electronic properties. The ruthenium solvent passivates the surface states, converting the surface into a highly ordered and air oxidation-resistant state. Finally, Ni/GaN Schottky diodes were fabricated to demonstrate improved device characteristics after passivation, which was a direct indication of improved GaN interface due to ruthenium passivation.
