A-63-year-old woman underwent gamma knife surgery (GKS) for acoustic neuroma. Six years later, she suffered sudden onset of severe headache followed by a disturbance of consciousness and subarachnoid haemorrhage due to a ruptured aneurysm originating from the distal anterior inferior cerebellar artery. The aneurysm was not located at a branching site and was included within the radiation field. The aneurysm was treated by endovascular embolization, and now, 15 months later, the patient has recovered satisfactorily. Abstract: Now that YBCO-coated conductors have been commercialized, a number of YBCO coils have been developed. However, their basic performances have not been systematically investigated so far. Here, we demonstrate that of a YBCO double pancake coil. The critical current of an epoxy impregnated YBCO double pancake coil was substantially degraded, i.e. the normal voltage appears above 8A, only 18% of that for the dry coil. It was inferred that degradation occurs if the cumulative radial stress developed during cool down exceeds the critical transverse stress for the YBCO-coated conductor (typically 10MPa). Under these conditions, the conductor was debonded at the interface between the buffer layer and YBCO layers, or fractured in the YBCO layer itself, causing cracks on the YBCO layer, resulting in a significant decline of the critical current. These negative effects are suppressed if the coils are dry wound or impregnated with paraffin, as the bonding strengths between turns are negligible and therefore turns are separated if the cumulative radial stress tends to be tensile. For non-circular coils in which epoxy impregnation is inevitable, degradation due to cumulative tensile transverse stress is still the major problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

REBCO coated conductors are now available from several industrial manufacturers and are expected to be promising conductors for high-field-magnet applications. Using these conductors, the development of solenoids capable of generating high magnetic fields of 20–30 T is ongoing in major high-field laboratories in the world. In addition, CERN recently launched a conceptual design study for the Future Circular Collider, in which a 20-T dipole magnet is listed as a candidate for the bending magnet of the main ring. However, there has been limited research published on the electrical transport properties of commercially available REBCO conductors in a high-field, low-temperature environment. For magnet designers, the transport properties are of the highest importance in choosing a suitable conductor, and the data form the bases for high-field magnet development. Therefore, in this work, a new sample holder, which allows the measurements of full-width conductors to be carried out relatively easily, was developed, and the transport properties of commercial REBCO conductors from seven manufacturers (AMSC, Fujikura, Shanghai Superconductor, SuNAM, SuperOx, SuperPower, and SWCC Showa) were investigated at 4.2 K in perpendicular fields of up to 18 T. The results show that the I c values at 4.2 K clearly vary to some extent among these commercial conductors and the higher-current 4-mm-wide conductors have I c values in the range of 230–305 A at 18 T and in the range of 320–424 A at 12 T. Use of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) inner coils in combination with conventional low-temperature superconducting (LTS) outer coils for an NMR magnet, i.e. a LTS/HTS NMR magnet, is a suitable option to realize a high-resolution NMR spectrometer with operating frequency >1 GHz. From the standpoint of creating a compact magnet, (RE: Rare earth) Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7 − x (REBCO) HTS inner coils which can tolerate a strong hoop stress caused by a Lorentz force are preferred. However, in our previous work on a first-generation 400 MHz LTS/REBCO NMR magnet, the NMR resolution and sensitivity were about ten times worse than that of a conventional LTS NMR magnet. The result was caused by a large field inhomogeneity in the REBCO coil itself and the shielding effect of a screening current induced in that coil. In the present paper, we describe the operation of a modified 400 MHz LTS/REBCO NMR magnet with an advanced field compensation technology using a combination of novel ferromagnetic shimming and an appropriate procedure for NMR spectrum line shape optimization. We succeeded in obtaining a good NMR line shape and 2D NOESY spectrum for a lysozyme aqueous sample. High-temperature superconductors (HTS) are the key technology to achieve super-high magnetic field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers with an operating frequency far beyond 1 GHz (23.5 T). (RE)Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7− x (REBCO, RE: rare earth) conductors have an advantage over Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10− x (Bi-2223) and Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8− x (Bi-2212) conductors in that they have very high tensile strengths and tolerate strong electromagnetic hoop stress, thereby having the potential to act as an ultra-compact super-high field NMR magnet. As a first step, we developed the world’s first NMR magnet comprising an inner REBCO coil and outer low-temperature superconducting (LTS) coils. The magnet was successfully charged without degradation and mainly operated at 400 MHz (9.39 T). Technical problems for the NMR magnet due to screening current in the REBCO coil were clarified and solved as follows: (i) A remarkable temporal drift of the central magnetic field was suppressed by a current sweep reversal method utilizing ∼10% of the peak current. (ii) A Z2 field error harmonic of the main coil cannot be compensated by an outer correction coil and therefore an additional ferromagnetic shim was used. (iii) Large tesseral harmonics emerged that could not be corrected by cryoshim coils. Due to those harmonics, the resolution and sensitivity of NMR spectra are ten-fold lower than those for a conventional LTS NMR magnet. As a result, a HSQC spectrum could be achieved for a protein sample, while a NOESY spectrum could not be obtained. An ultra-compact 1.2 GHz NMR magnet could be realized if we effectively take advantage of REBCO conductors, although this will require further research to suppress the effect of the screening current. This work investigates current transport characteristics of soldered lap joints of YBCO coated conductors with Cu stabilizers subjected to repeated uni-axial tensile stresses in the longitudinal direction. Data of influence of repeated stresses on transport characteristics clearly show fatigue effect causing damages in YBCO layer. Study Design:This was a retrospective observational study.Objectives:The objectives were to describe the prognosis of upper extremity function following cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI), and to identify prognostic factors for functional recovery.Setting:Spinal Injuries Center, Japan.Methods:Sixty patients with C3-4 CSCI without major bone injury participated in the study. Patients were treated nonsurgically and evaluated using the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) scales for the upper and lower extremities, their residual cervical motor functions, the modified Frankel grade and an upper extremity function scale. We compared the findings for the upper extremity function scale at 6 months with those for the residual cervical motor functions and modified Frankel grade obtained 3 days after injury.Results:Most patients with CSCI who could flex their hip and knee from a supine position (95%) or who showed some active elbow extension (86%) 3 days after their injury could use a spoon at 6 months. We compared patients who used their fingers at 6 months to those who could not, and observed significant differences in age and ASIA scores for the upper and lower extremities obtained 3 days after injury. A strong correlation was observed between the initial motor scores and the extent of functional recovery at 6 months.Conclusion:Hip and knee flexion from the supine position and elbow extension 3 days after injury significantly predicted a positive prognosis for upper extremity function. Abstract: Degradation of the epoxy impregnated YBCO coil performance is due to tensile radial stress concentration on the outer edge of the conductor during cool down. This stress acts as a cleavage stress and opens the conductor edge, fracturing the YBCO layer. The fracture propagates to another edge of the conductor, resulting in degradation of the coil performance. Degradation of the epoxy impregnated YBCO coil is eliminated, if we use a polyimide-electrodeposited YBCO-coated conductor: tensile radial stress concentration on the outer edge of the conductor is reduced due to plastic deformation of the ductile polyimide. Polyimide electrodeposition onto the YBCO-coated conductor is reliable, uniform, easy to apply, and can be extended to larger YBCO magnets, removing the risk of coil degradation. Abstract: Cleavage strength for an YBCO-coated conductor at 77K was investigated with a model experiment. The nominal cleavage strength for an YBCO-coated conductor is extremely low, typically 0.5MPa. This low nominal cleavage strength is due to stress concentration on a small part of the YBCO-coated conductor in cleavage fracture. Debonding by the cleavage stress occurs at the interface between the buffer layer and the Hastelloy substrate. The nominal cleavage strength for a slit edge of the conductor is 2.5-times lower than that for the original edge of the conductor; cracks and micro-peel existing over the slit edge reduce the cleavage strength for the slit edge. Cleavage stress and peel stress should be avoided in coil winding, as they easily delaminate the YBCO-coated conductor, resulting in substantial degradation of coil performance. These problems are especially important for epoxy impregnated YBCO-coated conductor coils. It appears that effect of cleavage stress and peel stress are mostly negligible for paraffin impregnated YBCO-coated conductor coils or dry wound YBCO-coated conductor coils. Abstract: Ferredoxin (Fd) is the primary soluble acceptor at the end of the photosynthetic electron transport chain, and is known to directly transfer electrons to a wide range of proteins for use in metabolism and regulatory processes. We have conducted a screen to identify new putative Fd interaction partners in the cyanobacteria Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 using Fd-chromatography in combination with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Many novel interactions were detected, including several redox enzymes, which are now candidates for further experiments to investigate electron transfer with Fd. In addition, some proteins with regulatory activity related to photosynthesis were identified. We cloned and expressed one such protein, known as RpaA, which is a specific regulator of energy transfer between phycobilisomes and PSI. Using the recombinant protein we confirmed direct interaction with Fd, and discovered that this was dependent on redox state. The screen for putative Fd-binding proteins was repeated, comparing oxidizing and reducing conditions, identifying many proteins whose interaction with Fd is redox dependent. These include several additional signaling molecules, among them the LexA repressor, Ycf53 and NII, which are all involved in interpreting the redox state of the cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The effect of current sweep reversal on the temporal drift in magnetic field intensity for a Bi-2223 solenoid was investigated by experiment and using numerical simulation. Current sweep reversal, by as small as 1% of the peak current, was found to stabilize the drift in magnetic field intensity for a Bi-2223 tape solenoid. The field drift was due to flux creep in the Bi-2223 tape and the current sweep reversal formed a barrier for flux entrance at the upper and lower surface of the conductor, preventing flux creep. With a current reversal of several% of the peak current, the barrier formation extended over half of the solenoid and the magnetic field intensity became constant with time. The current sweep reversal technique should prove useful to stabilize an ultra-high field low/high-temperature superconducting nuclear magnetic resonance magnet operated at frequencies (field intensities) beyond 1GHz (23.5T). Abstract: Influence of copper layer and mechanical stress–strain on AC losses in copper-stabilized YBCO coated conductor (CC) was investigated. The uni-axial tensile stress–strain was applied to the sample CC in liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure, and the AC losses (transport, magnetization and total AC losses) were measured by an electric method. Experimental results showed that the stress–strain dependence of the AC losses can be estimated by knowing stress dependent critical current and magnetization losses in the non-stressed CC. Influence of the copper layer was investigated by measuring frequency dependence of the AC losses. The experimental results showed that there are some influences of the copper layer. However, the influence of the copper layer was not significant from the stand point of practice applications. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Superconductors carrying currents larger than several 10kA are required for magnetic confinement fusion systems. A cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC), which has about 1000 of twisted thin superconducting strands in a ridged conduit, is a promising candidate for such large and high magnetic field superconducting system. A specific phenomenon in the CICC is so called avalanche-like quench (AQ). When some strands become resistive due to current saturation at critical current and/or a mechanical disturbance, the current re-distributes from the strands into neighboring ones, which are electro-magnetically coupled more strongly than the others. This causes current saturation in the neighboring strands. Finally, the whole cable becomes normal. We call this phenomenon an avalanche-like quench. Small multi-strand cables were tested by induced-current methods. Quench behaviors of both Nb3Sn and NbTi cables are observed and compared. In the experiment, for the Nb3Sn cable, the critical current measurement was stably carried out at high field without quench. In contrast, for the NbTi cable, we observed a number of AQs during inductive energization. Consequently, we suspected that the reason is based on the difference of critical temperature (T C) between Nb3Sn and NbTi. The difference of T C is several Kelvins, however, their macroscopic behaviors differ significantly. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We reported about reduction of mechanical losses in AC superconducting coils. The method is the use of FRP bobbins fabricated with special fibers. Since their FRPs have negative thermal expansion coefficient to the fiber direction, the FRP bobbins expand to the circumferential direction during cooling down. In case of the superconducting coils with such FRP bobbins, the winding tensions do not decrease during cooling down. Therefore, the mechanical losses are reduced by the suppression of wire’s vibration. Their special FRPs are a Dyneema® fiber reinforced plastic (DFRP), a Dyneema and glass fiber reinforced plastic (DGFRP), and a Zylon® fiber reinforced plastic (ZFRP). These materials have negative thermal expansion coefficient to the fiber direction, however, the amplitudes of thermal expansion are various by the quantity or quality of the fiber. In this paper, the values of thermal expansion were actually measured, and it was discussed about the influence on the mechanical losses. At the experimental results, the mechanical loss was small, so that the thermal strain to the circumferential direction on the coil was large. Moreover, in case of the coils with sufficiently strong winding tensions at coil-operating temperature, the mechanical losses vanished. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We have demonstrated in our previous works that a use of the particular structural material for superconducting coils was effective to mechanical-loss reduction under AC operation. In this study, we measured losses to investigate influence of the mechanical losses in the coils having various fiber reinforced plastics (FRPs) with different thermal expansion coefficients. The losses were small in the coils whose winding tension at coil-operating temperature were strong, on the contrary, the losses of the coil having the weak winding tension were large. The coil having the strongest winding tension at liquid helium temperature showed the smallest loss in all coils, and the loss agreed with a value from the Norris''s analysis. We think that the mechanical loss becomes almost zero in this coil since the strong tension can prevent the periodic vibration of the superconducting wire. The dependence of the loss on the difference in surface conditions of the materials of the superconducting coil''s bobbins was not observed, however, the mechanical losses in AC coils strongly depended on the winding tensions at cryogenic temperature. When alternating current superconducting coils having cable-in-conduit conductors are fabricated, non-metallic conduit materials are necessary to avoid eddy current losses in the conduits. Using two kinds of non-metallic tapes made of glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRPs) and Dyneema fiber reinforced plastics (DFRPs), we made the conductors with the GFRP conduits and DFRP conduits, and experimentally studied the total losses of the conductors. The measured results showed that the total loss of the conductor with the GFRP conduit was smaller than that with the DFRP conduit at the same value of the void ratio, the transport current, the external magnetic field, and so on. When the void ratios become high, the superconducting bundle cable can easily move in the conduit. Hence the measured total losses increased with the void ratios of the conductors. To make spacers from a plate made of the Dyneema fiber reinforced plastic (DFRP), a diamond cutter is generally used. When the plate is cut, the many agnail-like Dyneema fibers remain on the face. Hence we polished the face and measured the frictional coefficients on the faces with and without the agnail-like fibers. According to the experimental results the frictional coefficients on the surfaces with/without the Dyneema fibers showed almost the same value at the cryogenic temperatures (77 and 4 K). Therefore, during fabricating process of spacers made of DFRP, it is not necessary to polish the surfaces of DFRP spacers and to remove the agnail-like fibers after cutting the spacers from a viewpoint of the frictional coefficients. Background and Objectives: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is frequently characterized by chronic motor deficits. Therefore, this clinical trial assessed whether intracranial implantation of allogeneic modified mesenchymal stromal (SB623) cells can improve chronic motor deficits after TBI., Methods: Post hoc analysis of the double-blind, randomized, prospective, surgical sham-controlled, phase 2, STEMTRA clinical trial (June 2016 and March 2019) with 48 weeks of follow-up was conducted. In this international, multicenter clinical trial, eligible participants had moderate-to-severe TBI, were ≥12 months postinjury, and had chronic motor deficits. Participants were randomized in a 1:1:1:1 ratio to stereotactic surgical intracranial implantation of SB623 cells (2.5 × 10 6 , 5.0 × 10 6 , 10 × 10 6 ) or surgical sham-controlled procedure. The prespecified primary efficacy end point was significantly greater change from baseline of the Fugl-Meyer Motor Scale (FMMS) score, a measure of motor status, for the SB623 pooled vs control arm at 24 weeks., Results: A total of 211 participants were screened, 148 were excluded, and 63 underwent randomization, of which 61 (97%; mean age, 34 [SD, 12] years; 43 men [70.5%]) completed the trial. Single participants in the SB623 2.5 × 10 6 and 5.0 × 10 6 cell dose groups discontinued before surgery. Safety and efficacy (modified intent-to-treat) were assessed in participants who underwent surgery (N = 61; SB623 = 46, controls = 15). The primary efficacy end point (FMMS) was achieved (least squares mean [SE] SB623: +8.3 [1.4]; 95% CI 5.5-11.2 vs control: +2.3 [2.5]; 95% CI -2.7 to 7.3; p = 0.04), with faster improvement of the FMMS score in SB623-treated groups than in controls at 24 weeks and sustained improvement at 48 weeks. At 48 weeks, improvement of function and activities of daily living (ADL) was greater, but not significantly different in SB623-treated groups vs controls. The incidence of adverse events was equivalent in SB623-treated groups and controls. There were no deaths or withdrawals due to adverse events., Discussion: Intraparenchymal implantation of SB623 cells was safe and significantly improved motor status at 24 weeks in participants with chronic motor deficits after TBI, with continued improvement of function and ADL at 48 weeks. We established a qualified Madin-Darby canine kidney cell line (qMDCK-Cs) and investigated its suitability for source virus isolation to develop cell-based seasonal influenza vaccine viruses using vaccine manufacturer cells (Manuf-Cs). When inoculated with 81 influenza-positive clinical specimens, the initial virus isolation efficiency of qMDCK-Cs was exceeded 70%. Among the qMDCK-C isolates, 100% of the A/H1N1pdm09, B/Victoria and B/Yamagata strains and >70% of the A/H3N2 strains showed antigenicity equivalent to that of the contemporary vaccine or relevant viruses in haemagglutination inhibition (HI) or virus neutralization (VN) tests using ferret antisera. These qMDCK-C isolates were propagated in Manuf-Cs (MDCK and Vero cells) (Manuf-C viruses) to develop vaccine viruses. In reciprocal antigenicity tests, ferret antisera raised against corresponding reference viruses and Manuf-C viruses recognized 29 of 31 Manuf-C viruses and corresponding reference viruses, respectively at HI or VN titres more than half of the homologous virus titres, which is the antigenicity criterion for cell culture seasonal influenza vaccine viruses specified by the World Health Organization. Furthermore, ferret antisera against these Manuf-C viruses recognized ≥95% of the viruses circulating during the relevant influenza season with HI or VN titres greater than one-quarter of the homologous virus titres. No cell line-specific amino acid substitutions were observed in the resulting viruses. However, polymorphisms at positions 158/160 of H3HA, 148/151 of N2NA and 197/199 of B/Victoria HA were occasionally detected in the qMDCK-C and Manuf-C viruses but barely affected the viral antigenicity. These results indicated that qMDCK-Cs are suitable for isolating influenza viruses that can serve as a source of antigenically appropriate vaccine viruses.
