Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different mixing techniques on the pH and solubility of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM)., Methods and Materials: Five samples were prepared from each biomaterial with different mixing techniques including hand-, amalgamator- or ultrasonic-mixing and were then placed in pre-weighted plastic tubes to determine their pH values. Each tube was then incubated in 10 mL deionized distilled water for 1 h at 37(º)C. An electrode was placed in the fluid in each flask at 24(º)C and the pH was recorded. In the next stage, six samples from each mixing technique/material were separately placed in glass bottles containing 50 mL of distilled water at 37(º)C for 1 h and were let dry for 1 h at 37(º)C. The samples' weights were measured and recorded twice. The procedure was repeated at 1-, 7- and 21-day intervals. Data were analyzed with the repeated measures ANOVA (for solubility) and two-way ANOVA (for pH) and then the post-hoc Tukey's test was done., Results: The pH of the materials was not significantly affected by mixing methods. (P=0.8 for CEM and P=0.1 for MTA). The solubility of all test groups was within the acceptable range (=3%). However, the solubility of CEM at 1- and 21-day intervals was significantly different (P=0.03 for 1 day and P=0.001 for 21 days). Different mixing techniques had significant effects on the solubility of MTA at the three time points (P=0.004, 0.003 and 0.002 for 1-, 7- and 21-day intervals, respectively)., Conclusion: The pH of biomaterials was not influenced by the mixing technique and their solubility was within the acceptable range.

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is defined as three or more consecutive spontaneous abortions before the 20th week of gestation. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the association between a functional single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the interleukin (IL)-23 receptor gene (IL-23R; rs11209026, 1142 G wild type → A reduced function, Arg381Gln, R381Q) and RSA. For the study, 200 RSA patients (confirmed using established diagnostic criteria) and 200 normal individuals in fertility and infertility centers in the cities of Yazd and Isfahan were recruited during a period from 2012-2013. Using PCR-RFLP, the R381Q variant was screened for in the IL-23R gene of the patients and controls. The results indicated there were significant differences in the frequency of this genetic variant in the patients versus the healthy controls, i.e. 2% and 7.5%, respectively (p value = 0.01; odds ratio = 0.25; CI = 95%). No significant difference was found for the G allelic frequency in patients with RSA and in the control group (p = 0.60). The A allelic frequency was significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.01). Based on these findings, it is concluded that the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphism in the IL-23 receptor (R381Q) in patients with recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is less than that found in normal control women.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to compare the coronal seal of different thicknesses of MTA with gutta-percha after post space preparation., Materials and Methods: A total of 50 maxillary central incisors randomly divided into 5 experimental groups (n = 8). After preparation of the root canals with step back technique, in groups 1 and 2, post spaces were prepared and 4 or 5 mm gutta-percha remained in the apical, respectively. In groups 3, 4, and 5, there was 1-2 and 3 mm MTA in the apical, respectively. The ten teeth serve as control groups. The teeth were connected to a bacterial microleakage evaluation system. The study period was 120 days and the samples were evaluated on ten-day intervals; Meier-Kaplan technique was used for estimation of the mean time of microleakage to occur. Log-rank test was used for comparison of microleakage., Results: Number of samples exhibiting microleakage in MTA was less than those of gutta-percha at all intervals. Means of days with no microleakage were maximum and minimum with 3 mm MTA and 4 mm gutta-percha, respectively., Conclusion: Obturation of root canals using the MTA technique provides a proper seal with the minimum thickness of MTA in teeth requiring post space preparation.

Introduction: This in vitro study was designed to evaluate the effect of smear layer removal on push-out bond strength of white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) and calcium-enriched mixture cement (CEM)., Materials and Methods: Dentin discs with 3 mm thicknesses were divided into 4 groups (n=15): group 1: irrigation of the canal with normal saline and filling with WMTA; group 2: irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and then filling with WMTA; group 3: same as group 1 but the lumens were filled with CEM; group 4: same as group 2 but the lumens filled with CEM. The samples were incubated at 37(°)C for 3 days after wrapping in gauze pieces moistened with distilled water. The push-out bond strengths were then measured by the universal testing machine and the failure modes were examined under a stereomicroscope at 40× magnification. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey's test for bond strength. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05., Results: The greatest and lowest mean standard deviation for push-out bond strength were observed for groups 4 (3.13±1.46 MPa) and group3 (1.44±0.96 MPa), respectively. The effect of smear layer removal on push-out bond strength of CEM was significant (P=0.01), however, it was not significant for WMTA (P=0.52). The failure mode for all the groups was of mixed type., Conclusion: Under the limitations of this study, smear layer removal is recommended for CEM in order to gain higher push-out strength.

Statement of the Problem: Determining the crown-root ratio is crucial in many dental clinical decisions. There are no reliable data presented for Iranian population., Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the root-crown ratio of permanent teeth with regards to the relationship of gender and jaw type using panoramic radiographs. The reliability of method was also assessed., Materials and Method: The crown and root lengths of teeth were measured by a digital caliper on panoramic radiographs of 185 individuals except for the third molars. A total of 1994 teeth was studied and 50.8% of the teeth belonged to males and 49.2% belonged to females. The modified Lind method was applied., Results: The highest mean root-crown ratios in both arches of both genders were obtained in the second premolars, followed by the first premolars and canines. In both genders, the lowest root-crown ratios were found in the maxillary central incisors. In male patients, the mean root-crown ratio was higher (p= 0.003) than that of females. Using Bland-Altman analysis, a non-significant difference of 0.006 (95% CI: -0.012-0.024) and 0.0002 (95% CI: -0.011-0.011) were found for intra-observer and inter-observer agreement, respectively., Conclusion: Assessment of the root-crown ratio in permanent dentition could be performed on panoramic radiographs with acceptable reproducibility in an Iranian Population. Considering observed differences, our findings suggest that for the accurate assessment, this ratio must be calculated for male and female patients and also for the upper and lower jaws, separately.

Background: Many evidences showed that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of prostaglandins, has an important role in carcinogenesis. It has been observed in experimental models that selective COX-2 inhibitors suppress the formation of tumors including tongue carcinoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of COX-2 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) compared to normal oral mucosa and oral dysplasia., Materials and Methods: A total of 60 paraffined blocks (20 cases of OSCC, 20 cases of oral epithelial dysplasia and 20 cases of normal oral mucosa were included in this study and immunohistochemical staining was done for COX-2 expression. From each sample, 5 high power fields were assessed to determine the percentage of stained cells and staining intensity. Immunoreactivity was obtained by multiplying the above two cases. Data were analyzed with using the Kruskal-Wallis test ANOVA, Mann-Whitney test and least significant difference and P<0.05 was declared as significant., Results: High level of COX-2 expression was found in OSCC and dysplasia compared to normal mucosa. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between COX-2 expression and severity of dysplasia. However, no significant difference between low grade and high grade tumors was found., Conclusion: The result of the present study supports from the role of COX-2 in carcinogenesis and progression of premalignant lesion to malignancy.

SYCP3 (Sinaptonemal complex protein 3) plays a critical role in pairing and recombination of homologous chromosomes in meiosis 1. It has been shown that lack of this gene leads to infertility in male and weakened fertility in female mice. In a case-control study, we investigated the SYCP3T657C polymorphism in the genome of 100 Iranian women with recurrent pregnancy losses of unknown causes as well as 100 control samples of normal fertile women having at least one healthy child. The general aim of our study was to determine whether there is a relationship between genetic changes in the SYCP3 gene and recurrent pregnancy loss in human or not. Frequency of the heterozygous genotype and mutated allele C were significantly higher in women with recurrent pregnancy losses (P-value < 0.005). Our findings suggest that the T657C polymorphism of the SYCP3 gene is possibly associated with recurrent pregnancy loss of unknown cause in human.

Introduction: The aim of the present experimental study was to evaluate the push-out bond strength of Dorifill, Epiphany and MTA-Fillapex sealers to root canal dentin in presence and absence of smear layer (SL)., Methods and Materials: Sixty human single-rooted teeth were selected and divided into six groups (n=10). The canal irrigation protocol in groups 1, 3 and 5 consisted of 2.5% NaOCl during instrumentation and normal saline at the end of preparation plus a 5-min irrigation with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). In the remaining groups, normal saline was used for canal irrigation. The root canals were filled with Epiphany/Resilon (groups 1 and 2), Dorifill/gutta-percha (groups 3 and 4) and MTA-Fillapex/gutta-percha (groups 5 and 6). After two weeks of storage in 95% relative humidity at 37(º)C, 2 mm-thick dentin disks were prepared from coronal third of each root. The push-out bond strength test was carried out using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed with the two-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's tests. Statistical significance was defined at 0.05., Results: The highest (3.06±0.38 MPa) and lowest (1.16±0.32 MPa) push-out bond strength values were recorded in Epiphany/Resilon-NaOCl/EDTA and Dorifill/gutta-percha/normal saline groups, respectively. There were significant differences in the bond strength of sealers (P<0.05). In addition, elimination of the SL significantly increased the bond strength of all sealers (P<0.05)., Conclusion: The Epiphany/Resilon group exhibited the highest push-out bond strength in the presence and absence of the SL. Elimination of the SL resulted in a significant increase in the bond strength of all the sealers to dentin.

Microorganisms play a major role in initiation and perpetuation of pulpal and periapical diseases. Therefore, elimination of the microorganisms present in the root canal system is the fundamental objective of endodontic treatment. The use of mechanical debridement, chemical irrigation or other antimicrobial protocols and intra-canal medicaments are critical to attain this goal. The aim of this article was to review the antimicrobial agents and their properties in endodontics.

Diagnosis of subclinical and early stage clinical periodontal dysfunction could prevent from further socioeconomic burden. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic applicability of nitric oxide and its end-metabolites in periodontal tissue health and disease. Forty-two patients were enrolled and divided into three groups according to gingivitis (GI) and clinical attachment level (CAL) indices: a healthy group (GI<1, CAL<1), b: gingivitis (GI>1, CAL>1) and c: periodontitis (CAL>1) with 14 patients in each group. Unstimulated saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) were collected. Samples were evaluated for nitrite, nitrate and total nitric oxide contents with the ELISA method. In addition, CAL, GI, plaque index (PI), decay, missing, filling (DMFT) and bleeding index (BI) scores were also recorded. Except for GCF nitrite content (P= 0.89), there was an increasing trend for measured biomarkers in both saliva and GCF (Periodontitis> gingivitis> healthy periodontium, P< 0.05). Data remained stable after simultaneous adjustment for DMFT and BI scores as confounding factors. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, cut point and p- value were as the followings: GCF nitrate (0.71, 0.11, 0.29,0.43, 4.97, P= 0.04), nitric oxide GCF ( 0.64, 0.18, 0.28, 0.5, 10.12, P= 0.04), nitrite saliva (0.93, 0.96,0.93,0.96,123.48, P< 0.001), salivary nitrate (0.93, 0.96, 0.93, 0.96, 123.6, P< 0.001), salivary nitric oxide (0.93, 0.96, 0.93, 0.96, 246.65, P <0.001). Our results revealed that NO plays an important role in the process of destruction of periodontal tissues. Within the limitation of our study, detecting NO biomarker and its end metabolites in saliva is of more value to assess the periodontal health comparing to GCF.

Introduction: One of the hypotheses regarding the calcification induction by mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is the involvement of transforming growth factor-Beta (TGF-β) super family. Calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement is one of the endodontic biomaterials with clinical applications similar to MTA. The aim of the present in vitro study was to compare the induction of bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2) by a combination of disodium hydrogen phosphate (DSHP) and tooth colored ProRoot MTA (WMTA), to that of CEM cement and WMTA., Methods and Materials: Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were obtained from the attached gingiva of human premolars. HGFs were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's medium, supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum, penicillin, and streptomycin. Cells in groups 1, 2 and 3 were exposed to WMTA, CEM and WMTA+DSHP discs, respectively. The fourth group served as the control. After 72 h of exposure, HGF viability was determined by Mosmann's tetrazolium toxicity (MTT) assay. BMP-2 levels in cell-free culture media were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Statistical analysis was performed using the one-way ANOVA, followed by the post hoc Games-Howell test for BMP-2 and post hoc Tukey's test for the results of MTT assay., Results: Cellular viability was significantly higher in group 3 compared to the other groups (P<0.05); however, CEM and WMTA did not exhibit significant differences (P=0.08). The control group exhibited significantly higher cellular viability in comparison to the other groups of the study (P<0.05). The highest and lowest protein production rates were observed in the WMTA (3167±274.46 pg/mL) and WMTA+DSHP (1796±839.49 pg/mL) groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between the control, WMTA and CEM groups (P>0.05)., Conclusion: WMTA and CEM did not exhibit any significant differences in terms of inducing BMP-2 production; however, incorporation of DSHP into WMTA resulted in a decrease in the induction of this protein.

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are a desirable stem cell source in neurodegenerative diseases treatment due to their ability to differentiate into different cell lineages. In this study, we transplanted human ADSCs (hADSCs) into a lysophosphatidylcholine (lysolecithin) model of multiple sclerosis (MS) and determined the efficiency of these cells in remyelination process. Forty adult rats were randomly divided into control, lysolecithin, vehicle, and transplantation groups, and focal demyelination was induced by lysolecithin injection into spinal cord. To assess motor performance, all rats were examined weekly with a standard EAE scoring scale. Four weeks after cell transplantation, to assess the extent of demyelination and remyelination, Luxol Fast Blue staining was used. In addition, immunohistochemistry technique was used for assessment of the presence of oligodendrocyte phenotype cells in damaged spinal cord. Our results indicated that hADSCs had ability to differentiate into oligodendrocyte phenotype cells and improved remyelination process. Moreover, the evaluation of rat motor functions showed that animals which were treated with hADSC compared to other groups had significant improvement (P < 0.001). Our finding showed that hADSCs transplantation for cell-based therapies may play a proper cell source in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as MS.

Background: Testosterone may be an important factor causing depression in the elderly men. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between testosterone levels and depressive symptoms in older men in Amirkola, Iran., Methods: This cross- sectional study is a part of the Amirkola Health and Aging Project (AHAP) that involves people aged 60 and above living in Amirkola, a small town in northern Iran. The testosterone levels were measured using ELISA on morning blood samples (ngr / ml) and depressive symptoms were identified using Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). The data were collected and analyzed., Results: Eight hundred thirty elderly men with the mean age of 70.02±7.7 years were included. On the basis of GDS criteria, 593 individuals had no depressive symptoms and 237 had at least one of these symptoms. The mean serum testosterone level in men without symptoms of depression (4.94±4.22) ngr/ml and was higher than in those with such symptoms (4.19±3.65) ngr/ml (P=0.011). Also, there was a significant inverse correlation between the testosterone levels and number of depressive symptoms (P=0.015, r=-0.084). After adjusting with age and educational levels, and living alone (OR=2.6, 95% CI: 1.17-5.82, P=0.02), testosterone levels (OR=1.67, 95% CI: 1.03-2.72, P=0.038) had the greatest impact on the development of depression., Conclusion: The results of this study showed a significant inverse relationship between serum testosterone levels and depressive symptoms in elderly men.

Purpose: One of the most common problems in reproductive medicine is recurrent miscarriage (RM). There is increasing evidence showing genetic susceptibility of women is an important risk factor in the occurrence of RM. In recent years, there is a growing interest in sulfate and its role in fetal development. A novel mechanism of SULF1 has been demonstrated for modifying the activities of some growth factors and signalling molecules that have major roles during embryogenesis. The aim of present study was to evaluate the association of SULF1 gene polymorphism (rs6990375 G > A) in Iranian patients with RM., Methods: We established a case-control study of 200 Iranian women: 100 patients with the history of two or more RM as cases and 100 healthy women with at least two cases of successful pregnancy and no history of miscarriage as controls. The polymorphism was examined by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method., Results: The genotypic analysis between case and controls showed significant differences (p-value = 0.000). Allelic analysis showed no significant correlation (Χ2 = 3.36, p-value = 0.066). The heterozygous genetic variant was significantly higher among healthy women (OR = 12.67, 95% CI = 6.47-24.79)., Conclusions: Our data showed that rs6990375 polymorphism of SULF1 gene could be among one of the factors related to RM in Iranian women. Further evaluation of this polymorphism may be important and need further studies.

Ovarian cancer is one of the most prevalent malignancies in women. Screening of the disease is done using variety of biomarkers. Diagnostic performance of current biomarkers of the disease such as human epididymis protein (HE4) and CA125 shows contradiction in previous studies. The goal of this study was to evaluate serum levels of CA125 and HE4 in Iranian patients with ovarian cancer and compare specificity and sensitivity of HE4, CA125 and HE4 + CA125 in patients with different stages and diverse histology. To evaluate CA125 and HE4, 32 patients and 34 healthy women were selected. Origin of ovarian cancer was verified by expert gynecological oncologist. Significance and diagnostic performance were determined by ANOVA and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) and areas under the curve (AUC), respectively. Serum levels of CA125 and HE4 were significantly increased in patients in comparison with control group, especially for tumor cells originated from epithelium (p < 0.001). ROC-AUC for HE4, CA125 and HE4 + CA125 were 0.91, 0.86 and 0.91, respectively. Specificity of HE4 was more than CA125 (85 vs. 80 %). Conversely, sensitivity of CA125 was higher in comparison with HE4 (90 vs. 80 %). It is being noticed that cutoff point of HE4 and CA125 was 150 pmol/L and 38 U/mL, respectively. HE4 is slightly more specific for diagnosis of early stages of the disease, but the difference is not remarkable. CA125 and HE4 + CA125 have some diagnostic performance for prediction of advanced stages. Generally, the data of present study suggest that combining of HE4 and CA125 is a better screening tool for diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Introduction: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of smear layer on the push-out bond strength of white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) with and without disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4)., Materials and Methods: Dentin discs with standard cavities were obtained from extracted human single-rooted teeth and divided to 4 groups (n=15) according to the irrigation regimen and the canal filling material. In groups 1 and 3, canals were irrigated with normal saline; in groups 2 and 4, irrigation method included sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and then ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA). The canals were filled with WMTA in first and second groups and with WMTA+Na2HPO4; in groups 3 and 4. The samples were wrapped in wet gauze and incubated in 37°C for 3 days. The push-out bond strength was then measured by means of the Universal Testing Machine and the failure modes were examined under stereomicroscope at 40× magnification. Tow-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the effect of material type and smear layer removal. Post hoc Tukey test was used for the two-by-two comparison of the groups., Results: The greatest and lowest mean±standard deviation for push-out bond strength were observed in groups 4 (4.54±1.14 MPa) and 1 (1.44±0.96 MPa), respectively. The effect of removing the smear layer on the push-out bond strength of WMTA+Na2HPO4 was significant (P=0.01), but not for WMTA (P=0.52). Interestingly, there was significant difference between groups 1, 3 and 2, 4 (P<0.05). The failure mode for all experimental groups was of mixed type., Conclusion: Under circumstances of this in vitro study, removal of smear layer increases push-out bond strength when Na2HPO4 is added to WMTA.

Background: Infertility is accompanied by numerous psychological and social problems. Infertile couples are more anxious and emotionally distressed than other fertile people. Previous studies suggested that infertility is more stressful for women than men., Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the status of general health of infertile couples., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated general health of 150 infertile couples attending to Yazd Research and Clinical Center for Infertility that were selected consequently. The data were gathered by the researchers, based on face to face interview before and after three months of treatment by two questionnaires. The first questionnaire had questions on demographic information and the second one was the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28). This questionnaire has four sub- scales areas. All data were transferred directly to SPSS 15 and analyzed., Results: The mean age of women was 28.3 and men were 32.4 years. The scores for all sub- scales of GHQ in women were more than men. There was significant difference between age and general health at physical symptoms scales (p=0.002), anxiety and sleep disorders (p=0.003). The age group 25-29 years had higher scores (more than 7) than other age groups. There was significant difference between the scale of social dysfunction and results of treatment., Conclusion: Our results, similar to the previous studies have revealed negetive social and mental effects of infertility on women is more than men, so there is need that they be educated specially.

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of blood contamination on retention characteristics of white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) in reconstructions of the furcation area., Methods: Furcal perforations, measuring 1.3 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height, were produced in 180 human mandibular first molars. The teeth were divided into 12 groups of 15. WMTA and CEM were used in groups 1-6 and 7-12, respectively, for perforation repair. In groups 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 the walls of the perforated area were contaminated with blood; normal saline was injected in the remaining groups. Push-out test was carried out in groups 1, 2, 7, and 8 after 24 hours, in groups 3, 4, 9, and 10 after 72 hours, and in the remaining groups 7 days after placement of the materials by using a Universal test machine. To evaluate the failure modes, the samples were sectioned at furcation floor area, divided in two in the vertical direction, and evaluated under a stereomicroscope at × 40 magnification. Data were analyzed with multivariate analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey tests., Results: The highest (6.75 MPa) and lowest (1.77 MPa) bond strength values were recorded in groups CEM/no blood contamination at 7 days and MTA/blood contamination at 24 hours, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in bond strength between MTA and CEM (P < .05). However, there were significant differences in bond strength between blood-contaminated and uncontaminated groups in both materials (P < .05); time had exerted a significant effect on the bond strength of the study groups (P < .05). Failure patterns were of the mixed type in all the samples., Conclusions: Resistance of both WMTA and CEM to displacement was similar, and elapse of time from 24 hours to 7 days and contamination resulted in an increase and decrease in bond strength of these 2 materials to dentin, respectively., (Copyright © 2013 American Association of Endodontists. Knowledge regarding the anatomic morphology of maxillary molars is absolutely essential for the success of endodontic treatment. The morphology of the permanent maxillary first molar has been reviewed extensively; however, the presence of two canals in a two-rooted maxillary first molar has rarely been reported in studies describing tooth and root canal anatomies. This case report presents a patient with a maxillary first molar with two roots and two root canals, who was referred to the Department of Endodontics, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

Background: Long-term tunneled catheters are used for the hemodialysis or chemotherapy in many patients. Proper placement of the catheter tip could reduce early and late catheter related complications. Aim of the present study was to evaluate a new formula for proper placement of tunneled hemodialysis or infusion port device by using an external anatomic landmark., Materials and Methods: A total of 64 adult patients undergoing elective placement of tunneled Central Venous Catheter (CVC) requiring hemodialysis or chemotherapy were enrolled in this prospective study during 2011-2012 in the university hospital. The catheter length to be inserted in the right internal jugular vein (IJV) was calculated by adding two measurements (the shortest straight length between the insertion point of the needle and the suprasternal notch plus and half of sternal length). The catheter position was considered correct if the tip was positioned in the right atrium (RA) or Superior vena cava (SVC)-RA junction., Results: The patients were 55.28 ± 19.85 years of age, weighed 5.78 ± 16.62 kg and were 166.07 ± 10.27 cm tall. Catheters were inserted successfully in 88% of patients (n = 56). Catheter tip positions in the failures were SVC (n = 5), tricuspid valve (n = 2), and right ventricle (n = 1) in our patients., Conclusion: Long-term hemodialysis or port CVC could easily insert in the right IJV by using half of the sternal length as an external land marks among adult patients.

Purpose: This is a case- control study to determine whether G1733A polymorphism of androgen receptor gene is associated with an increased risk for recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA)., Method: A total of 85 women with at least two recurrent spontaneous abortion before 20th week of gestation composed the study group. Subjects were genotyped by the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism method., Results: The observed frequencies of GG, GA and AA genotypes of the G1733A polymorphism were 5.89 %, 82.35 % and 11.76 %, respectively, for the patient group and 71.76 %, 23.51 % and 4.71 %, respectively, for the control group. Allele frequencies of the G1733A polymorphism among patients and controls were 0.47 and 0.84, respectively, for the dominant allele (G) (wild type) and 0.53 and 0.16, respectively, for the A allele (mutant type)., Conclusions: These results indicated that the androgen receptor G1733A polymorphism is strongly associated with increased risk for RSA.

Background: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) caused by various genetic and non-genetic factors. After chromosome abnormality, thrombophilia is one of the most important genetic factors that could cause RPL. Factor V Leiden and factor II G20210A mutation were the most common mutations cause thrombophilia in the world., Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of factor V Leiden and prothrombine gene mutations in women with RPL compared with women who had uneventful pregnancies., Materials and Methods: This case control study evaluates the frequency of factor V-Leiden and factor II G20210 genotypes in 80 women with two or more pregnancy losses, compared with 80 women without adverse pregnancy outcome. The mutations were assessed by PCR-RFLP., Results: Frequency of the factor V Leiden among cases was 2.5%, which was higher than controls (1.25%), but the difference was not significant. No factor II G20210 mutation was found among cases and controls., Conclusion: These data did not confirm that factor V Leiden and factor II G20210 mutation might play a role in recurrent pregnancy loss in Iranian women.

Background: Meiotic genes are very important candidates for genes contributing to female and male infertility. Mammalian MutL homologues have dual roles in DNA mismatch repair (MMR) after replication errors and meiotic reciprocal recombination. The MutL homologs, MLH1 and MLH3, are crucial for meiotic reciprocal recombination and human fertility. In this study the functional polymorphisms of MLH3 C2531T was investigated in Iranian women with unexplained infertility., Objective: Investigating the association between a common SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) C2531T in the MLH3 gene and female infertility., Materials and Methods: In total, 105 women with unexplained infertility as case group and 100 women with at least one child and no history of infertility or abortion as controls were recruited for this association study. The MLH3 C2531T polymorphism was tested by tetra-amplification refractory mutation system-PCR (4P-ARMS-PCR) method., Results: The MLH3 2531C and T alleles frequencies were 43.33% and 56.67% among infertile patients, and 61.5% and 38.5% among normal controls, respectively. In the patient and control subjects the CC (Pro 844 Pro) genotype frequency of MLH3 C2531T was 4.76% and 25%, the CT (Pro 844 Leu) genotype was 77.15% and 73%, and the TT (Leu 844 Leu) genotype was 19% and 2%, respectively (p=0.0001)., Conclusion: The presence of the polymorphic allele T leads to an increased risk of 2.09 times (OR=2.09, 95% CI=1.38-3.16; p=0.0001) for developing infertility in relation to the control group. Therefore, our data suggest that the MLH3 C2531T polymorphism can be associated with the risk of unexplained infertility in Iranian women.

Background: Several factors may cause infertility and fetal loss. Blood groups antigens seem to be implied in the mechanisms of infertility and fetal loss. Maternal natural antibody can react against father's blood group antigens on spermatozoa. The effects of parental blood group system on infertility and fetal surveillance perceived by its manifestation in prezygotic (caused infertility) and postzygotic (caused fetal loss) stages. Objective of the present study is to determine the effect of parental ABO blood group on fetal surveillance and men infertility., Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective, cross sectional study. Our study was carried out in fertility and infertility center of Yazd city. Blood group of 118males (group1:100 males with infertility and group 2: 18 males with abortion history in female partners) that referred to this center was evaluated based on medical document's patients. Data were analyzed with SPSS 16 software using chi-square test. The results were considered significant when P-value was <0.05, CI: 0.95., Results: Results indicated that overall distribution of blood groups in group 1 was:50%, 25%, 16% and 9% and in group 2: 56%,27%,11%,6% for blood groups O, A, B and AB respectively. There is a significant relationship between male infertility and blood group O (P value = 0.01). There is also a significant relationship between parental blood group O and fetal loss in group 2 (P value =0.03)., Conclusion: The present study revealed that there is a significant relationship between father's blood group O and fetal loss, so that appropriate intervention strategies can be followed.

Background and aims. An ideal root canal filling material should completely seal the entire root canal space and block communication between the root canal system and its surrounding tissues; it should also be nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, non-genotoxic, biocompatible, insoluble in tissue fluids and dimensionally stable. Bonding to dentin is a promising property, which can prevent leakage and improve the sealing ability of root canal filling materials. Resilon was developed and rec-ommended initially because the existing rootcanal filling materials did not bond to root canal dentin. Since its introduction in 2004, numerous reports have been published regarding various aspects of this material. The aim of this literature review is to present investigations regarding Resilon's physical and chemical properties and leakage studies. Materials and methods. A review of the literature was performed by using electronic and hand searching methods for Resilon from May 2004 to April 2012. Results. There are many published reports regarding Resilon. The searchshowed that Resilon is composed of a parent polymer, polycaprolactone or Tone, which is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester, with filler particles consisting of bioactive glass, bismuth oxychloride and barium sulfate. It possesses some antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is a promising material for root canal filling. Despite the presence of numerous case reports and case series regarding these applications, there are few designed research studies on clinical applications of this material. Resilon has some drawbacks such as high cost. Conclusion. Resilon seals well and is a biocompatible material. However, more clinical studies are needed to confirm its efficacy compared with other materials.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of MTAD as final rinse on removal of the smear layer subsequent to primary irrigation with 1.3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) during 10-minute instrumentation periods., Methods: Forty teeth were divided into 2 experimental groups, each containing 15 teeth, and 1 positive control group of 10 teeth. The canals were prepared with hand and rotary instruments. In the MTAD group, the root canals were flushed with 1.3% NaOCl solution during 10-minute instrumentation, and MTAD was used as the final rinse. In other experimental group, 5.25% NaOCl was used during instrumentation, and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used as the final rinse. In the positive control group, sterile distilled water was used for irrigation. The overall instrumentation period for each canal was 10 minutes. The amount of the smear layer and degree of erosion qualified according to the study by Torabinejad et al by using a scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. All statistical analyses were set with a significance level of α = 0.05., Results: In the positive control group, debris and heavy smear layer covered the root canal surface and the tubules. In MTAD group, moderate smear layer covered the root canal surface and the tubules. In EDTA group, there was no smear layer on surface of canals. There were significant differences between groups (α < 0.0001). Mann-Whitney test showed significant difference between experimental groups (α = 0.01)., Conclusions: In 10-minute instrumentation period, the use of 5.25% NaOCl during instrumentation and 17% EDTA as the final rinse is more effective than using 1.3% NaOCl as primary irrigation and MTAD as final rinse on removal of the smear layer., (Copyright © 2012 American Association of Endodontists. Background and Aims: This survey was conducted to provide statistical data regarding publications in PubMed-indexed journals from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences Faculty of Dentistry., Materials and Methods: The database used for this study was PubMed. The search was conducted using key words including the names of the heads of the departments. Papers published between January 1, 2005 and April 31, 2012 were considered. The retrieved abstracts were reviewed and unrelated articles were excluded. Data were transferred to Microsoft Excel software for descriptive statistical analyses., Results: A total of 158 papers matched the inclusion criteria, with the majority from the Department of Endodontics (49 articles). The highest proportion (48.3%) of papers was related to in vitro studies, followed by clinical trials, in vivo studies, and case reports. The number of publications showed a considerable increase over the studied period., Conclusion: PubMed-indexed publications from different departments have increased steadily, suggesting that research has become an essential component in the evaluated institute.

Objectives: The success of endodontic surgery has been shown to depend partly on the apical seal. Grey mineral trioxide aggregate (GMTA) produces hydroxyapatite twice as often as white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) when suspended in a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the microleakage phenomenon of gray and white mineral trioxide aggregates as root-end filling materials after immersion in synthetic tissue fluid (STF)., Methods: 55 single-rooted extracted maxillary anterior human teeth were divided into two experimental groups of 20 teeth each, plus 3 groups of 5 teeth each as two negative and one positive control groups. The root canals were cleaned, shaped, and laterally compacted with gutta-percha. The root ends were resected and 3 mm deep cavities were prepared. The root-end preparations were filled with GMTA or WMTA in the experimental groups. Leakage was determined using a dye penetration method. Data were analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 0.05 level of significance., Results: The mean dye leakage was 0.40 ± 0.1 mm for GMTA and 0.50±0.1 mm for WMTA groups, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two experimental groups (P = 0.14)., Conclusion: Despite the different properties and behaviours of GMTA and WMTA in STF, there were no significant differences in microleakage when using GMTA or WMTA.

Background: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is defined as two or more consecutive pregnancy losses before twenty weeks of gestation. It is caused by a variety of genetics and non-genetics factors. Thyroid autoimmunity could associate with pregnancy loss., Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of Levothyroxine in treatment of RPL in women with high auto-thyroid antibodies., Materials and Methods: In this observational cross sectional study, 900 women who had a history of recurrent pregnancy loss were studied. All women with high anti-TPO antibody without any other problems entered in this study. Levothyroxine was given to them two months before pregnancy till the end of pregnancy. The doses of levothyroxine were depended on the anti-TPO levels, which were decided by endocrinologist. Women followed for the results of pregnancies., Results: The success rate of pregnancy in women with abnormal anti-TPO with Levothyroxine therapy was 82.85%. Mean of anti-TPO in women with treatment before taking medication was 488.35 and after that it was 123.35 UI/ml. This difference was significant (p<0.05). The mean of the antibodies was not significantly different in women without treatment., Conclusion: This study showed that Levothyroxine reduces the incidence of spontaneous abortions in women with high Anti-TPO antibody. It decreased anti-TPO antibody levels after 2-3 months treatment.

The aim of this study was to examine the possible relationship between sperm DNA integrity and chromatin packaging evaluated by cytochemical assays, traditional sperm parameters and recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) of unknown origin. In this cohort study, 40 couples with a history of RSA and 40 couples with proven fertility were considered as case and control groups respectively. The semen samples of all husbands were analysed for sperm parameters and also sperm chromatin and DNA integrity assessed using cytochemical tests including aniline blue (AB), chromomycin A3 (CMA3), toluidine blue (TB), acridine orange (AOT) and nuclear chromatin stability assay. Among different sperm parameters, only slow motility was significantly different between the two groups. In sperm chromatin evaluations, there were significant differences between the two groups in all of the tests. In addition, the majority of semen samples in RSA patients exhibited upper percentages of abnormal spermatozoa than the cut-off values regarding different cytochemical assays. Our study showed that in the cases of RSA, slow motility had a significant reduction in comparison with controls and also spermatozoa of men from RSA group had less chromatin condensation and poorer DNA integrity than spermatozoa that obtained from fertile men with no history of RSA., (© 2011 Blackwell Verlag GmbH.)

Early diagnosis and management of strabismus is needed to avoid complications such as amblyopia. In this retrospective cohort study we reviewed the profile and surgical outcome of vertical strabismus patients attending a clinic in Yazd city in the Islamic Republic of Iran. From the medical files of 265 patients, 19.2% were found to have pure vertical deviation and 80.8% had combined horizontal and vertical strabismus. Congenital causes were recorded for 83.0% of cases and 24.9% had a family history of strabismus. Hypertropia (91.7%) was more common than hypotropia (8.3%). There was a statistically significant relationship between age at onset and vertical strabismus. Female patients had a higher rate of congenital vertical strabismus than did male patients. There was no significant association between surgery outcomes and sex or age of onset of strabismus. Early diagnosis and management in affected families and screening ofpatientswith strabismus family history is needed.

Background: The prevalence of infertility is variable between 5-30% around the world. In Iran, more than 2 million couples suffer from infertility. Infertility causes depression, anxiety, social isolation and sexual dysfunction., Objective: This descriptive study was undertaken to determine general health in infertile couples., Materials and Methods: One hundred and fifty infertile couples attending Yazd Research and Clinical Center for Infertility were randomly selected during March till September 2009. The GHQ-28 questionnaires were completed by researchers, based on face to face interview. It contains 28 items, which have been divided to four sub- items. The results come out by scoring the patients answer from 0 to 84. All data were analyzed by Chi-square and t-test in SPSS software., Results: GHQ scores of all sub-scales and total in women were more than men, which shows general health condition in women is worse than men. There was no relation between the duration of infertility and general health scores., Conclusion: This study suggests that the infertility has significant effect (p=0.001) on health situation of infertile couples, especially infertile women. They are at risk of somatic symptoms (p=0.0001), social dysfunction (p=0.0001) and severe depression (p=0.0001). GHQ could provided help and support in order to improve the health situation of infertile couples.

It has been reported that latex and extracts of different species of Ficus are cytotoxic to some human cancerous cell lines. In this study, cytotoxicity of fruit and leaf extracts as well as the latex of Ficuscarica L. on HeLa cell line were evaluated. ethanolic extracts of leaves and fruits were prepared through percolation and ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts were prepared by reflux method. Cytotoxic effects of these extracts and latex against HeLa cell line were then examined. Briefly, He Lacells were seeded at 2 × 10(4) cells/mL in 96-well plates. After 24 h incubation at 37(°)C, the cells were treated with different concentrations of the extracts or latex. The viability of the cells was determined by the reduction of 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) from formazan following 48 h incubation and the absorbance was measured at 540 nm using an ELISA plate reader. The results indicated that the latex and different extracts of Ficus carica could reduce the viability of the He Lacells at concentrations as low as 2 µg/mL in a dose dependent manner. The approximate IC50 values of the ethanolic, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts of the leaves and fruits were 10, 19, 12 µg/mL and 12, 12, 11.5 µg/mL, respectively. The IC50 for the latex was about 17 µg/mL.

Chlorogenic acid, a pharmacologically important compound, is a phenolic compound that occurs in certain commonly used medicinal herbs. We looked for the presence of this compound in the callus cultures of Varthemia persica DC (var. persica). We have evaluated the conditions for establishment of callus cultures of V. persica and the in vitro production of chlorogenic acid. Callus was initiated by culturing seedling of V. persica on MS basal medium supplemented with different concentrations of kinetin, naphthalene acetic acid and 2,4-diphenoxy acetic acid. Also, the influence of light, and phytohormones on the production of chlorogenic acid was examined. Kinetin stimulated the production of chlorogenic acid. Replacement of 2,4-diphenoxy acetic acid with naphthalene acetic acid did not alter the chlorogenic acid production. The ability to induce the accumulation of chlorogenic acid in the V. persica callus cultures offers an opportunity to produce a phenolic compound with therapeutic value.

Four molecular descriptors were selected from a pool of variables using genetic algorithm, and then used to built a QSAR model for a series of 1-(azacyclyl)-3-arylsulfonyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridines as 5-HT(6) receptor agonists or antagonists, useful for the treatment of central nervous system disorders. Simple multiple linear regression (MLR) and a nonlinear method, artificial neural network (ANN), were used to model the bioactivities of the compounds; while MLR gave an acceptable model for predictions, the ANN-based model improved significantly the predictive ability, being more reliable for the prediction and design of novel 5-HT(6) receptor ligands. Background: Studying women's quality of life, we come across some harmful effects that factor such as dysmenorrhea caused by endometriosis leaves on their lives, their ability to work, their familial relations, and their self-confidence. Due to the repeated medical follow-ups and the side effects of medical therapies and endometriosis surgeries, many patients tend to use less expensive, nonmedical, and nonaggressive methods. The present study aimed to assess the effects of massage therapy, one of the aforementioned methods on endometriosis caused dysmenorrhea., Methods: This was a semi-empirical clinical trial. Considering inclusion criteria, 23 patients suffering from endometriosis visited the Infertility Center of Isfahan, who were later confirmed by laparoscopy or laparotomy were picked as the sample through a simple method. The visual analog scale and McGill questionnaires were used once before and twice after the end of intervention for each patient. The data were analyzed using SPSS software., Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the intensity of pain before the intervention started, immediately after, and also six weeks after it (p < 0.001)., Conclusions: According to the results of this study and confirmations of other ones, it seems that massage therapy can be a fitting method to reduce the menstrual pain caused by endometriosis.

Aim of this study is to determine the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome by maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) level. We followed 295 pregnant women from MSAFP screening in the 14th to 22th week of gestation until the end of pregnancy and information on pregnancy outcome have been recorded in questionnaires. Of 295 pregnant women, 270 had term labor and 25 had preterm labor. The frequencies of pregnancy outcomes were as following: 3 (1.01%) stillbirths, 25 (8.47%) preterm labor, and 10 (3.4%) preterm rupture of membranous (PROM), 15 (5.1%) pre-eclampsia, 23 (7.8%) oligohydramnious, and 1 (0.33%) miscarriage. The mean of preterm labor was significantly associated with the higher level of MSAFP (P = 0.021). The mean was 55.1 ng/cc in preterm labor and 41.1 ng/cc in term labor. Also, second trimester MSAFP levels were higher in women with pre-eclampsia (P < 0.001). The significant association was found between higher level of MSAFP with oligohydramnious (P < 0.001) and low birth weight (P < 0.001). Pregnancies with an elevated MSAFP level are associated with adverse obstetric outcomes and need more prenatal care.

Polymorphisms of the TP53 gene codon 72 exhibit less effective function in tumor suppression and usually are associated with human cancer. To investigate the frequency of proline and arginine alleles of TP53 codon 72, the present study analyzed the DNA from blood samples of 30 Iranian women with endometrial cancer, in comparison with 32 healthy women. A Pro/Pro genotype was associated with increased endometrial cancer risk (odds ratio OR = 3.7, 95% confidence interval CI = 0.539-25.59). In patients, Pro allele frequency (68%) was higher than Arg frequency (32%), and higher also than Pro frequency in healthy control subjects (55%) (OR = 1.9, 95% CI = 0.903-3.893). It could be that the Pro allele is less apoptotic than the Arg allele, and that the Arg allele most probably activates transcription factors more efficiently than the Pro variant. These novel findings on the frequency of TP53 gene codon 72 polymorphism in endometrial cancer in Iranian women indicate that in this population the Pro allele might be associated with increased risk of endometrial cancer., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. This study was set to investigate whether the adverse effects of heat on spermatozoa and subsequent foetuses could be prevented by long-term zinc administration. The scrotums of animals were immersed in water at either 43 degrees C (heat group) or 23 degrees C (control group). Half of the heat and control mice were given 10 mg kg(-1) zinc every other day for 60 days and the others received sterile saline instead of zinc. Heat stress significantly reduced sperm motility, concentration, hypoosmotic swelling-water test (HOS-WT) positive and chromomycin A(3) (CMA(3)) negative spermatozoa at the first 15 days, and the greatest decrease occurred at 30 days (P < 0.05). Sperm motility, concentration and HOS-WT positive spermatozoa were also reduced initially in the zinc administered group, but we did not observe any further decrease in the above mentioned parameters on day 30 (P < 0.05). The weight of foetuses obtained from the females mated with paternal heat treatment males was significantly lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05) and long-term zinc therapy caused a partial recovery (P > 0.05). This study demonstrates that the adverse effects of hyperthermia on semen parameters may be prevented by zinc therapy. Likewise, long-term administration of zinc could improve quality of litter obtained from the females mated with scrotal heat treatment males.

DNA vaccination is a promising approach for inducing both humoral and cellular immune responses. The mode of plasmid DNA delivery is critical to make progress in DNA vaccination. Using human papillomavirus type 16 E7 as a model antigen, this study evaluated the effect of peptide-polymer hybrid including PEI600-Tat conjugate as a novel gene delivery system on the potency of antigen-specific immunity in mice model. At ratio of 10:50 PEI-Tat/E7DNA (w/w), both humoral and cellular immune responses were significantly enhanced as compared with E7DNA construct and induced Th1 response. Therefore, this new delivery system could have promising applications in gene therapy.

Background: The p53 tumour suppressor gene is a well-known factor regulating apoptosis in a wide variety of cells. Alterations in the p53 gene are among the most common genetic changes in human cancers. Several polymorphisms of the p53 tumour suppressor gene have been associated with recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)., Aims: To evaluate the association of polymorphisms p53 codon 72 with the response to in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment and occurrence of repeated miscarriages., Methods: The homozygous and heterozygous genotypes and allelic frequencies of Arg and Pro p53 at codon 72 were identified by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique in 70 infertile women with more than two IVF failures. Each comparison was made with 97 women experiencing RPL and 32 fertile women each with at least two healthy children as the control group., Results: The frequency of homozygous Pro/Pro genotypes was found significantly higher among the women with RPL than the other two groups (P = 0.041). Whereas, Arg/Arg genotype was significantly different in the recurrent implantation failure (RIF) group (P = 0.005)., Conclusion: It is concluded that p53 codon 72 polymorphism may serve as a susceptible factor affecting the chances of RPL and RIF.

Aim: To determine the prevalence of celiac disease (CD) in children with idiopathic short stature (ISS) and the diagnostic value of immunoglobulin (Ig) A G antigliadin antibodies (AGA) and transglutaminase (TTG) antibodies for CD., Methods: A total of 104 children (49 male, 55 female) with ISS without a specific etiology were studied. Extensive endocrine investigations had shown no abnormalities in any subject. Anthropometric parameters and IgA AGA and IgA TTG antibodies were evaluated in this study group. These antibodies were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All patients were referred for an endoscopic intestinal biopsy. The biopsy samples were classified according to revised Marsh criteria (UEGW 2001)., Results: We detected positive IgA TTG antibodies in 36 and IgA AGA in 35 of these patients. Thirty one IgA TTG antibody positive and 28 IgA AGA positive subjects showed histological abnormalities compatible with celiac disease (33.6%). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value for IgA AGA were found to be 80%, 88.4%, 77.8% and 89.7%, respectively. Sensitivity, specificity and PPV for IgA TTG antibodies were 88.6%, 94.2% and 88.6%, respectively., Conclusion: We conclude that the prevalence of celiac disease is high in patients with ISS and it is important to test all children with ISS for celiac disease by measuring serologic markers and performing an intestinal biopsy.

A new ultraviolet spectrophotometric method has been developed for the direct qualitative determination of captopril in pharmaceutical preparation and biological fluids such as human plasma and urine samples. The method was accomplished based on parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and partial least squares (PLS). The study was carried out in the pH range from 2.0 to 12.8 and with a concentration from 0.70 to 61.50 microg ml(-1) of captopril. Multivariate calibration models PLS at various pH and PARAFAC were elaborated from ultraviolet spectra deconvolution and captopril determination. The best models for this system were obtained with PARAFAC and PLS at pH = 2.04 (PLS-PH2). The applications of the method for the determination of real samples were evaluated by analysis of captopril in pharmaceutical preparations and biological (human plasma and urine) fluids with satisfactory results. The accuracy of the method, evaluated through the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), was 0.58 for captopril with PARAFAC and 0.67 for captopril with PLS-PH2 model. Acidity constant of captopril at 25 degrees C and ionic strength of 0.1 M have also been determined spectrophotometrically. The obtained pKa values of captopril are 3.90 +/- 0.05 and 10.03 +/- 0.08 for pKa. and pKa2, respectively.

The simultaneous determination of manganese(II) and iron(II) mixtures by using spectrophotometric methods is a difficult problem in analytical chemistry, due to spectral interferences. By multivariate calibration methods, such as partial least squares (PLS), it is possible to obtain a model adjusted to the concentration values of the mixtures used in the calibration range. Orthogonal signal correction (OSC) is a preprocessing technique used to remove the information unrelated to the target variables based on constrained principal component analysis. OSC is a suitable preprocessing method for partial least squares calibration of mixtures without loss of prediction capacity using spectrophotometric method. In this study, the calibration model is based on absorption spectra in the 450-600 nm range for 21 different mixtures of manganese(II) and iron(II). Calibration matrices were containing 0.05-1.2 and 0.1-2.3 microg mL(-1) Mn(II) and Fe(II), respectively. The RMSEP for manganese(II) and iron(II) with OSC and without OSC were 0.0316, 0.0291, and 0.0907, 0.115, respectively. This procedure allows the simultaneous determination of manganese(II) and iron(II) in synthetic and real matrix samples with good reliability of the determination.

Background: Fetal growth is the result of interactions between various factors and can be estimated by ultrasonic measurements. Fetal femur length is a scale for estimating the fetal weight in individual races because fetal growth patterns differ among different races., Subjects and Methods: This was a prospective study involving 500 pregnant women at 36 weeks of gestational age. Real-time sonography was done to measure the femoral length and then the weight of the fetus was estimated by the Honarvar 2 equation. The correlation between estimated fetal weight (EFW) and real weight was tested by Pearson correlation coefficient and relationships with the age and BMI of the mother, the sex of the neonate and parity were tested by multiple regression., Results: EFW by the Honarvar 2 equation correlated significantly with the actual birthweight. Therefore, this equation is valid for fetal weight estimation. It also does not depend on the age and BMI of the mother, sex of neonate, or parity., Conclusion: Ethnicity potentially plays an important role in the fetal weight estimation. The Honarvar formula produced the best estimate of the actual birthweight for Iranian fetuses, and its use is recommended.

A heterogeneous group of 10 male and 15 female judo players are utilized in this study. The subjects complete a standardized maximal treadmill exercise test. Urine samples are collected at the pre- and postexercise stages. The urine steroids are measured using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry instrument. In rest and after exercise, significantly higher testosterone and epitestosterone concentrations in males (p < 0.01) are found. The etiocholanolone-dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) ratio is significantly lower in males than females (p < 0.05). In both males and females, etiocholanolone concentration significantly decreases with the effect of exercise (p < 0.05). 11-OH etiocholanolone concentration also significantly decreases, but only in females (p < 0.05). Positive correlation is found between the changes of the etiocholanolone and epitestosterone concentration caused by exercise.
