301. Recent trends in the wind-driven California current upwelling system

Abstract

Long-term changes in the marine ecosystems of the Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS) are predicted due to anthropogenic climate change. In particular, global ocean acidification is having a profound effect on the coastal waters of the EBUS, affecting the entire trophic chain, net primary production (NPP) and related economic activities such as fisheries. Another predicted change related to human activity is that of upwelling dynamics with expected long-term changes in upwelling winds as proposed by Bakun (1990), Bakun et al. (2015) and Rykaczewski et al. (2015). Although these predicted long-term changes may emerge only later in the 21st century, this has fueled many studies using historical data. Long-term increase in upwelling winds has thus been a much debated topic, showing that there is considerable uncertainty depending on the EBUS considered, the effect of natural climate fluctuations, the choice of wind dataset, the time period considered, and the methodologies and significance tests applied. Therefore, there is an immediate interest in being able to monitor upwelling using verified and self-consistent wind data sets. This work focused on a sensitivity study of the estimated trends in upwelling winds in the California Current Upwelling System (CCUS), for the most recent period 1996–2018, using the two state-of-the-art satellite wind analyses and two atmospheric model re-analyses. Embedded into the strong modulation by natural climate fluctuations on interannual and decadal time scales, we do see an increase in upwelling-favorable winds in the core of the CCUS, with a local increase of more than 25% in seasonal upwelling transport for the period considered. In this central upwelling zone, a good agreement on stronger equatorward winds for the winter and spring seasons is found between the different datasets, although with different significance levels. Abstract

BackgroundIn unresectable metastatic rectal cancers, the surgery of the primitive tumor remains highly debated. Chemoradiotherapy (CRT) of the primitive could allow sufficient local control in order to avoid major and sometimes mutilating surgery. Dose escalation during CRT could increase this local control. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and tolerance of a CRT with radiation dose escalation delivered in intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with simultaneous integrated boost (SIB), in metastatic low and middle rectal cancers.MethodsThis multicenter phase I study included six patients treated for unresectable synchronous metastatic low and middle rectal adenocarcinoma in two dose levels. Radiotherapy was delivered using IMRT with SIB. The dose escalation was 52.5 Gy (level 1) and 56.25 Gy (level 2) in the primary tumor, in 25 fractions of 2.1 Gy and 2.25 Gy, respectively. High-risk clinical target volume (CTV) and low-risk CTV received respectively 50 Gy and 45 Gy in 25 fractions in the two levels. Concomitant chemotherapy was oral capecitabine and CRT was performed after four cycles of mFOLOX6 chemotherapy. The dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) was defined by a toxicity requiring the interruption of radiotherapy for more than five consecutive fractions.ResultsAll six patients received the full course of treatment at scheduled doses. No patients had acute toxicity requiring interruption of radiotherapy therefore no DLT has been reported. No patients had acute toxicity ≥ 3. Concerning late toxicity, three patients experienced grade 3. After CRT, four patients had a partial response and one patient had a complete clinical response. Two patients were considered in local progression at 9.4 months and 20.4 months of inclusion.ConclusionsDose escalation at 56.25 Gy in the tumor lesion was possible with good acute tolerance. It needs to be evaluated in a larger study. It could allow sufficient local control in order to avoid mutilating surgery in these metastatic patients.Trial registrationNCT03634202. Abstract

Rationale: Cerebrovascular function is critical for brain health, and endogenous vascular protective pathways may provide therapeutic targets for neurological disorders. S1P (Sphingosine 1-phosphate) signaling coordinates vascular functions in other organs, and S1P 1 (S1P receptor-1) modulators including fingolimod show promise for the treatment of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. However, S1P 1 also coordinates lymphocyte trafficking, and lymphocytes are currently viewed as the principal therapeutic target for S1P 1 modulation in stroke. Objective: To address roles and mechanisms of engagement of endothelial cell S1P 1 in the naive and ischemic brain and its potential as a target for cerebrovascular therapy. Methods and Results: Using spatial modulation of S1P provision and signaling, we demonstrate a critical vascular protective role for endothelial S1P 1 in the mouse brain. With an S1P 1 signaling reporter, we reveal that abluminal polarization shields S1P 1 from circulating endogenous and synthetic ligands after maturation of the blood-neural barrier, restricting homeostatic signaling to a subset of arteriolar endothelial cells. S1P 1 signaling sustains hallmark endothelial functions in the naive brain and expands during ischemia by engagement of cell-autonomous S1P provision. Disrupting this pathway by endothelial cell-selective deficiency in S1P production, export, or the S1P 1 receptor substantially exacerbates brain injury in permanent and transient models of ischemic stroke. By contrast, profound lymphopenia induced by loss of lymphocyte S1P 1 provides modest protection only in the context of reperfusion. In the ischemic brain, endothelial cell S1P 1 supports blood-brain barrier function, microvascular patency, and the rerouting of blood to hypoperfused brain tissue through collateral anastomoses. Boosting these functions by supplemental pharmacological engagement of the endothelial receptor pool with a blood-brain barrier penetrating S1P 1 -selective agonist can further reduce cortical infarct expansion in a therapeutically relevant time frame and independent of reperfusion. Conclusions: This study provides genetic evidence to support a pivotal role for the endothelium in maintaining perfusion and microvascular patency in the ischemic penumbra that is coordinated by S1P signaling and can be harnessed for neuroprotection with blood-brain barrier-penetrating S1P 1 agonists.

Abstract

Coal samples of different ranks were investigated through various compositional, morphological/structural, and textural experiments prior to their electrochemical implementation in Na-ion half-cells. The purity of coals proved insignificant while distinctions in the flake size, pore width, pore distribution, ID/IG ratio, crystallite parameters (La and Lc) along with adjacent parameters, such as the R-empirical parameter, i.e., limited parallel graphene stacking proved more relevant for Na+ storage into the negative host electrodes. Coal powders were identified via a two-step TGA analysis technique displaying the overall carbon content of the coals and the impurities. Coal-based anode materials were prepared from raw and pyrolyzed coals (at 800 °C under argon gas-flow) and cycled in Na-ion half-cells to further investigate the impact of the coal rank on the energetic properties. High volatile bituminous coal with lower graphene stacking and augmented nanoscopic pores delivered higher reversible capacity in comparison with semi-anthracite coal, whether in their raw (67 vs. 54 mAh/g) or pyrolyzed (214 vs. 64 mAh/g) states, respectively vs. Na/Na+. The dominance of HVBC over SAC due to enhanced properties as R-empirical parameter, ID/IG ratio, and internal porosity. This study provides an exhaustive methodology to assess other carbonaceous anode materials further to evaluate their energy storage capabilities.

310. Chemical Production of Graphene Oxide with High Surface Energy for Supercapacitor Applications

Abstract

The chemical exfoliation of graphite to produce graphene and its oxide is undoubtedly an economical method for scalable production. Carbon researchers have dedicated significant resources to developing new exfoliation methods leads to graphene oxides with high quality. However, only a few studies have been dedicated to the effect of the starting graphite material on the resulting GO. Herein, we have prepared two different GOs through chemical exfoliation of graphite materials having different textural and structural characteristics. All samples have been subjected to structural investigations and comprehensive characterizations using Raman, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, TGA, N2 physisorption, and FTIR spectroscopy. Our results provide direct evidence of how the crystallite size of the raw graphite affects the oxidation degree, surface functionality, and sheet size of the resulting GO. Building on these significant understandings, the optimized GO achieves a highly specific capacitance of 191 F·g−1 at the specific current of 0.25 A·g−1 in an aqueous electrolyte. This superior electrochemical performance was attributed to several factors, among which the specific surface area was accessible to the electrolyte ions and oxygenated functional groups on the surface, which can significantly modify the electronic structure of graphene and further enhance the surface energy.

328. Effect of MnO on the Dielectric Properties of Nb-SrTiO3Ceramics for Capacitor Applications

Abstract

Nb-SrTiO3perovskite ceramics, without and with the addition of 3 mol % MnO, were synthesized by an organic gel-assisted process, sintered under argon/hydrogen, and annealed under oxygen. For both series, colossal permittivity (>104), low loss tangent (<0.1), and high resistivity (109Ω cm) at 1 kHz were obtained. Furthermore, the dielectric measurements exhibit good frequency stability regardless of the grain size of the ceramics. Indeed, the Nb-SrTiO3samples show a small grain size (2 μm), and the addition of MnO leads to a strong increase in grain size up to about 40 μm. The mechanism responsible for the colossal permittivity and low dielectric loss is discussed on the basis of analyses of impedance spectroscopy and EPR data. EPR measurements reveal the existence of oxygen vacancies and different oxidation states of Mn in the grains. The grain boundaries and grains resistance were deduced from a fit of an RC element model to the impedance spectroscopy data. From all of these results, it was shown that the grains are semiconducting and the grain boundaries are insulating. The correlation between permittivity as a function of grain size and grain boundary capacity validates the barrier layer model between the grains and grain boundaries. Thus, the electrical behavior of the grain boundaries is one of the key factors to obtain ceramic capacitors useful for industrial applications.

Abstract

Despite type I haemochromatosis (HC) is mainly associated with the HFE C282Y/C282Y genotype, a second genotype -C282Y/H63D- has mostly been described in other patients. Its association with HC, apart from any associated co-morbid factors, remains unclear and complex to interpret for physicians. This study assesses the weight of this genotype and the role of co-morbid factors in the occurrence of iron overload. This prospective study included the C282Y/C282Y (n = 172) and C282Y/H63D (n = 58) patients enrolled in a phlebotomy program between 2004 and 2007 in a blood centre of western Brittany (Brest, France), where HC is frequent. We compared prevalence of these two genotypes, as well as patients' profile regarding degree of iron overload and prevalence of co-morbid factors. First, we confirmed the obvious deficit of C282Y/H63D compound heterozygotes among patients cared by phlebotomies. This genotype was 3.0 times less frequent than the C282Y/C282Y genotype among those patients (18.9% vs. 56.0%) whereas it was 4.9 times more frequent in the general population (4.3% vs. 0.9%; p

Abstract

Highly branched dendritic swarming of B. subtilis on synthetic B-medium involves a developmental-like process that is absolutely dependent on flagella and surfactin secretion. In order to identify new swarming genes, we targeted the two-component ComPA signalling pathway and associated global regulators. In liquid cultures, the histidine kinase ComP, and the response regulator ComA, respond to secreted pheromones ComX and CSF (encoded by phrC) in order to control production of surfactin synthases and ComS (competence regulator). In this study, for what is believed to be the first time, we established that distinct early stages of dendritic swarming can be clearly defined, and that they are amenable to genetic analysis. In a mutational analysis producing several mutants with distinctive phenotypes, we were able to assign the genes sfp (activation of surfactin synthases), comA, abrB and codY (global regulators), hag (flagellin), mecA and yvzB (hag-like), and swrB (motility), to the different swarming stages. Surprisingly, mutations in genes comPX, comQ, comS, rapC and oppD, which are normally indispensable for import of CSF, had only modest effects, if any, on swarming and surfactin production. Therefore, during dendritic swarming, surfactin synthesis is apparently subject to novel regulation that is largely independent of the ComXP pathway; we discuss possible alternative mechanisms for driving srfABCD transcription. We showed that the phrC mutant, largely independent of any effect on surfactin production, was also, nevertheless, blocked early in swarming, forming stunted dendrites, with abnormal dendrite initiation morphology. In a mixed swarm co-inoculated with phrC [sfp.sup.+] and [phrC.sup.+] sfp (GFP), an apparently normal swarm was produced. In fact, while initiation of all dendrites was of the abnormal phrC type, these were predominantly populated by sfp cells, which migrated faster than the phrC cells. This and other results indicated a specific migration defect in the phrC mutant that could not be trans-complemented by CSF in a mixed swarm. CSF is the C-terminal pentapeptide of the surface-exposed PhrC pre-peptide and we propose that the residual PhrC 35 aa residue peptide anchored in the exterior of the cytoplasmic membrane has an apparently novel extracellular role in swarming.

Abstract

Rising numbers of psychoactive tryptamine derivatives have become available on the drug market over the last decade, making these naturally occurring or synthetically manufactured compounds highly relevant for forensic analyses. One of these compounds is 5-methoxy- N,N -dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT), a constituent of the dried poison of Incilius alvarius (Colorado River toad), which has a history of ritual and/or recreational use. Still, comprehensive and validated qualitative as well as quantitative analytical data on the psychoactive components of this poison are scarce. In this study, samples of the poison of Incilius alvarius were collected from live toads in the Sonoran Desert, Arizona (USA), and analyzed with a set of complementary methods. Acetone/water (70/30, v/v) proved to be the solvent of choice for the extraction of tryptamine derivatives. Trace compounds were enriched, and overload with 5-MeO-DMT was prevented by chromatographic separation of 5-MeO-DMT prior to qualitative analyses. The method for quantification was validated. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was suitable to identify 5-MeO-DMT as the main tryptamine in samples of the poison. The combined evaluation of analytical data gained from gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), high-performance liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight high-resolution MS (HPLC–qToF-HRMS) and HPLC–MS-MS confirmed the presence of 5-MeO-DMT, 5-MeO- N -methyltryptamine, 5-MeO-tryptamine, 5-MeO-tryptophol, 2-(5-methoxy-1 H -indol-3-yl)-acetic-acid (5-MIAA), 5-HO- N -methyltryptamine, bufotenin, DMT and tryptophan. For the first time, 5-MeO-tryptamine and two positional isomers of hydroxylated MeO-DMT were detected in the poison of Incilius alvarius. The tryptamine present in the highest concentrations was 5-MeO-DMT (mean ± SD: 410,000 ± 30,000 μg/g). Mean concentrations of 5-MeO-tryptamine (490 ± 260 μg/g), 5-HO- N -methyltryptamine (270 ± 120 μg/g), bufotenin (2,800 ± 1,900 μg/g) and DMT (250 ± 80 μg/g) showed a relatively high variability between individual samples. The comprehensive analytical reference data of Incilius alvarius poison presented here might prove useful for forensic chemists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Therapies for metastatic SDHB-dependent pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGL) are limited and poorly efficient. New targeted therapies and identification of early non-invasive biomarkers of response are thus urgently needed for these patients. We characterized an in vivo allograft model of spontaneously immortalized murine chromaffin cells (imCC) with inactivation of the Sdhb gene by dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) and 18FDG-PET. We evaluated the response to several therapies: IACS- 010759 (mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I inhibitor), sunitinib (tyrosine kinase inhibitor with anti-angiogenic activity), talazoparib (poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) inhibitor) combined or not to temozolomide (alkylating agent), pharmacological inhibitors of HIF2a (PT2385 and PT2977 (belzutifan)) and molecular inactivation of HIF2a (imCC Sdhb-/- shHIF2a). Multimodal imaging was performed, including magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to monitor the level of succinate in vivo. The allografted model of Sdhb-/- imCC reflected SDHB-deficient tumors, with increased angiogenesis and a particular avidity for 18FDG. After 14 days of treatment, IACS-010759, sunitinib and talazoparib at high doses allowed a significant reduction of the tumor volumes. In contrast to the tumor growth inhibition observed in Sdhb-/- shHIF2a imCC tumors, pharmacological inhibitors of HIF2a (PT2385 and belzutifan) showed no antitumor action in this model, alone or in combination with sunitinib. 1H-MRS, but not DCE-MRI, enabled the monitoring response to sunitinib, which was the best treatment in this study, promoting a decrease in succinate levels detected in vivo. 338. Valence-controlled manganese oxide by solvent-assisted permanganate reduction for advanced aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Abstract

Manganese oxide-based cathodes (MnOx) play a pivotal role in advancing aqueous Zinc-Ion batteries (AZIB) due to their high theoretical capacity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, given the MnOx's diverse structural, valence and textural properties, it is challenging to pinpoint the ideal manganese oxide material type and optimize simple and tunable synthesis routes to achieve great capacity retention and rate capability properties. In this work, we develop for the first time a synthesis method controlling the crystallization pathways and valence properties of MnOxmaterials through permanganate reduction using different reducing agents (Ethanol and Propanal) followed by heat treatment under 500 °C, thus achieving the synthesis of multivalent E500-MnOx(MnO2) and Trivalent P500-MnOx(Mn2O3). As cathode materials in AZIB, P500-MnOxreached a specific capacity of 315 mAh·g−1without any apparent capacity decay, while E500-MnOxshowed a lower specific capacity of 150 mAh·g−1at 100 mA·g−1with a capacity retention of only 65 %. Through Ex-Situ XRD and SEM imaging, P500-MnOxexhibited a reversible cycling mechanism compared to its E500-MnOxcounterpart which had preoccupied insertion sites.

Abstract

The combination of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal nanoparticles offers great prospects for improving the electrochemical properties of sensors. In this paper, silver (Ag) nanoparticle-doped metal-organic framework (MIL-101) composites (Ag-MIL-101) were prepared by ultrasonic treatment of MIL-101 and the reduction of the metal precursor (AgNO3) within the MIL-101 material. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of Ag-MIL-101(Cr). The resulting material was used to construct a new electrochemical sensor for the reliable detection of dopamine. The electrochemical response of the developed sensor toward dopamine was evaluated using differential pulse voltammetry. A Box-Behnken design was performed, and response surface methodology was used to study the influence of different parameters on dopamine detection. The response of the modified electrode for dopamine detection was linear in the range from 0.02 μM to 10 μM, and the detection limit was 0.02 μM (S/N = 3). Additionally, it showed high selectivity in the presence of urea, uric acid, ascorbic acid, and L-arginine. Due to its low cost, easy process, and great performance, this Ag-MIL-101/GCE electrode can be a good candidate for the fabrication of a non-enzymatic dopamine sensor.

Abstract

Introduction: Extracellular Vesicles (EV) recapitulate the benefits of cell therapy for heart repair. Their mechanism of action remains unsettled. Hypothesis: EV may contribute to heart repair by de novo cardiogenesis. Methods: To answer this question, we used 2 bi-transgenic mouse models: the fate-mapping MerCreMer/ZEG and the Mosaic Analysis With Double Markers (MADM). Myocardial infarction was induced by permanent coronary artery ligation. Those with a LVEF ≤ 45% were treated 3 weeks later with EV (from human iPS-derived cardiovascular progenitor cells; 10x10 9 particles) or PBS, injected under echo guidance in the peri-infarcted area (MerCreMer/ZEG: n=15/group and MADM: n=6/group). To track endogenous cardiomyocyte (CM) proliferation, we used EdU labeling in MerCreMer/ZEG delivered by osmotic pumps implanted for 7-10 days post-injection and biphoton microscopy in MADM models. Cardiac function was assessed 4-6 weeks after injection by echocardiography and MRI, blinded to treatment group. Hearts were then subjected to histological and transcriptomic analyses (qPCR and genome-wide microarray). Results: In PBS controls, EF remained stable over time in MerCreMer/ZEG mice and decreased from 34.5% ± 6.0% to 30.7% ± 7.5% in MADM mice by the end of the study. Conversely, EV injections increased EF from 32.1% ± 9.5% to 36.1% ± 7.45 % in MerCreMer/ZEG and from 36.2 %± 8.7% to 40.5% ± 8.9% in MADM mice. A significant difference in the change from baseline was found between EV and controls: 20.7% ± 10.5 % (p=0.048) and 28.0% ± 11.0 %, (p=0.045) for MerCreMer/ZEG and MADM groups, respectively. This improvement was confirmed by MRI in MerCreMer/ZEG mice (p=0.05). Improvement in EF was unrelated to the appearance of new CM, as shown by the absence of difference in TnT+/EdU+/GFP+ cell numbers and the lack of activation of the YAP/TAZ pathway between control and EV groups. However, EV reduced infarct size by 11.9% ± 5.75% (p=0.04), which was accompanied by decreased expression of 4 pro-fibrotic genes (Col1a2, Col3a1, Lox, Col1a2 by qPCR) in heart tissue and a 2.13X overexpression of the anti-fibrotic miRNA 133a-1 compared to controls (n=3/group; p=0.001). Conclusions: EV likely improve cardiac function by modulation of fibrosis rather than by de novo cardiogenesis.

Abstract

A core-shell synthesis is applied to CaCu3Ti4O12, a material that shows colossal permittivity. The objective was to test several bulk permittivity of the shell material in order to reach a large capacity of the grain boundaries after sintering. The permittivity is improved with certain shells while the bulk resistivity reaches levels approaching that of commercial grain boundary barrier layer (GBBL) ceramic capacitors. The highest permittivity is confirmed to be related to the highest capacity of grain boundaries. The bulk resistivity is related to that of grain boundaries. If one attaches the more important weight to a high bulk resistivity without need of permittivity larger than 15,000, as in commercial GBBL ceramic capacitors, several samples appear convenient. On the other hand, much higher permittivity can be reached like in CCTO with a shell of TiO2 but at the expense of dielectric losses, possibly due to oxygen departure from stoichiometry. Thermal post-treatment under various controlled atmosphere have been applied to reduce dielectric losses.

Aprendre una llengua, no es resumeix només a utilitzar una llengua. Així, vam decidir organitzar la nostra recerca sobre la intercomprensió de les llengües en un context de classe bilingüe, però també de classe monolingüe. A través d’un estudi teòric i pràctic, ens vam preguntar en quina mesura els aprenentatges en classe bilingüe poden afavorir els mecanismes de la intercomprensió de les llengües. A causa dels esdeveniments d’aquest any, la nostra part pràctica és només ara per ara un projecte d’observacions en classes monolingües i bilingües d’una sessió construïda a partir del manual Euromania dirigit per Escudé (2014). Aquesta sessió hauria permès observar i comparar els mecanismes i estratègies dels alumnes de les diferents classes, i també analitzar les pràctiques de classe favorables a la construcció de la competència plurilingüe.; Apprendre une langue, ne veut pas dire n’utiliser qu’une seule langue. Nous avons alors décidé d’organiser notre recherche autour de l’intercompréhension des langues dans un contexte de classe bilingue, mais également monolingue. À l’aide d’une étude théorique et pratique, nous nous sommes demandés dans quelles mesures les apprentissages en classe bilingue peuvent-ils favoriser les mécanismes et stratégies d’intercompréhension des langues. Au vue des évènements de cette année, notre partie pratique n’est pour le moment qu’un projet d’observations en classe bilingue et monolingue d’une séance construite à l’aide du manuel Euromania dirigé par Escudé (2014). Cette séance aurait permis d’observer et de comparer les mécanismes et stratégies des élèves de ces différentes classes, mais aussi analyser les pratiques de classes favorables à la construction de la compétence plurilingue.

343. Impact of fiducial markers placements on the delineation of target volumes in radiation therapy for oesophageal cancer: final results of the FIDUCOR study

Abstract

Purpose This prospective monocentric phase II study (FIDUCOR-study) aimed at the assessment of the impact of fiducial markers (FMs) implantation on conformal chemo-radiation therapy (CRT) planning in esophageal carcinoma (EC) patients. Methods/materials Fifteen EC patients were enrolled in the study. Each patient underwent two simulation CT-scans before (CT1) and after (CT2) FMs implantation, in the same position. FMs (3 mm length gold markers, preloaded in a 22G needle) were implanted after sedation, under EUS and X-Ray guidance, and were placed at the tumor’s extremities, and in the visible lymph nodes. Target delineation and treatment plan were both performed first on CT1 with the assistance of, diagnosis-CT, gastroscopy- and EUS-details, and second on CT2 using FMs and CT-data. The value of FMs implantation was assessed by the difference of growth-tumor-volume (GTV) and clinical-target-volume (CTV) between CT1-based and CT2-based delineation. A significant difference was defined as a ≥5 mm-difference on axial(x) or coronal(y) slices, a ≥10mm-difference on sagittal slices, or a ≥20%-difference in GTV. The impact on dose distribution in organs at risk (OAR) (lung, heart, liver) was also studied. Results Between 09/2014 and 12/2015, 15 patients could achieve fiducial procedures, without any complication. One FM migration occurred. We observed a significant modification of the GTV-dimension in 100% of the cases (15/15, 95%CI: [78.2;100.0]), mainly due to a difference in sagittal dimension with a mean variation of 11.2 mm and a difference> 10 mm for 8/15 patients (53.3%). One patient had a significant isocenter displacement as high as 20 mm. The esophagus tumor was not seen on the CT-scan in one patient due to its small size. One patient had a distant lymph node metastasis not visible on CT-scan. We observed no significant impact on OAR distribution. Conclusion In our study, FMs-implantation appeared to have positive impact on accurate volume definition in EC-patients. Abstract

The implementation of spinel LiMn2O4 in lithium-ion batteries has been long established commercially and well-reported academically. Nowadays, most commercial spinel LiMn2O4 electrodes are synthesized by electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) precursors. However, using earth-abundant and inexpensive pyrolusite (β-MnO2) as reported in this work, offers several advantages. The synthesis of spinel LiMn2O4 using β-MnO2 precursors by solid-state reaction followed by thermal calcination under air generated micro rod-like lithium impregnated powders. Examining the electrochemical performance of these active materials upon Li-ion intercalation registered an initial specific discharge capacity of 95 ​mA ​h g-1. The synthesized cathode material was able to cycle at high rates (up to 9C) while retaining half of its initial discharge capacity, with just an overall drop reaching 7% of its capacity. Distinctive stability after 500 cycles at combined charge/discharge rates was recorded with a minute irreversible capacity loss and an overall capacity drop of 3%. This work authenticates the use of natural pyrolusite ingredients as a precursor for spinel LiMn2O4 synthesis besides providing economic and ecological assertions with the synthesis technique implemented.

Abstract

[EN] OBJECTIVES: Prevention of postischaemic ventricular dilatation progressing towards pathological remodelling is necessary to decrease ventricular wall deterioration. Myocardial tissue engineering may play a therapeutic role due to its capacity to replace the extracellular matrix, thereby creating niches for cell homing. In this experimental animal study, a biomimetic cardiopatch was created with elastomeric scaffolds and nanotechnologies. METHODS: In an experimental animal study in 18 sheep, a cardiopatch was created with adipose tissue-derived progenitor cells seeded into an engineered bioimplant consisting of 3-dimensional bioabsorbable polycaprolactone scaffolds filled with a peptide hydrogel (PuraMatrix (TM)). This patch was then transplanted to cover infarcted myocardium. Non-absorbable poly(ethyl) acrylate polymer scaffolds were used as controls. RESULTS: Fifteen sheep were followed with ultrasound scans at 6 months, including echocardiography scans, tissue Doppler and spectral flow analysis and speckle-tracking imaging, which showed a reduction in longitudinal left ventricular deformation in the cardiopatch-treated group. Magnetic resonance imaging (late gadolinium enhancement) showed reduction of infarct size relative to left ventricular mass in the cardiopatch group versus the controls. Histopathological analysis at 6 months showed that the cardiopatch was fully anchored and integrated to the infarct area with minimal fibrosis interface, thereby promoting angiogenesis and migration of adipose tissue-derived progenitor cells to surrounding tissues. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows the feasibility and effectiveness of a cardiopatch grafted onto myocardial infarction scars in an experimental animal model. This treatment decreased fibrosis, limited infarct scar expansion and reduced postischaemic ventricular deformity. A capillary network developed between our scaffold and the heart. Abstract

Coastal boulder deposits (CBD), transported by waves at elevations above sea level and substantial distances inland, are markers for marine incursions. Whether they are tsunami or storm deposits can be difficult to determine, but this is of critical importance because of the role that CBD play in coastal hazard analysis. Equations from seminal work by Nott (1997), here referred to as the Nott Approach, are commonly employed to calculate nominal wave heights from boulder masses as a means to discriminate between emplacement mechanisms. Systematic review shows that this approach is based on assumptions that are not securely founded and that direct relationships cannot be established between boulder measurements and wave heights. A test using an unprecedented dataset of boulders moved by storm waves (with associated sea-state data) shows a lack of agreement between calculations and actual wave heights. The equations return unrealistically large heights, many of which greatly exceed sea states occurring during the boulder-moving storms. This underscores the finding that Nott-Approach wave-height calculations are unreliable. The result is general, because although the field data come from one region (the Aran Islands, Ireland), they represent a wide range of boulder masses and topographic settings and present a valid test of hydrodynamic equations. This analysis demonstrates that Nott Approach equations are incapable of distinguishing storm waves from tsunami transport and that wave heights hindcast from boulder masses are not meaningful. Current hydrodynamic understanding does not permit reliable computation of wave height from boulder measurements. A combination of field, numerical, and experimental approaches is required to quantify relationships between wave power and mass transport onshore. Many CBD interpreted as tsunami deposits based on Nott-Approach analysis may in fact have been emplaced during storms and should therefore be re-evaluated. This is especially important for CBD that have been incorporated into long-term coastal risk assessments, which are compromised if the CBD are misinterpreted. CBD dynamics can be better determined from a combination of detailed field measurements, modeling, and experiments. A clearer understanding of emplacement mechanisms will result in more reliable hazard analysis.
