251. The SU(3)-invariant sector of new maximal supergravity

Abstract

We investigate the SU(3)-invariant sector of the one-parameter family of SO(8) gauged maximal supergravity that has been recently proposed. To this end, we construct the N=2 truncation of this theory and analyse its full vacuum structure. The number of critical point is doubled and includes new N=0 and N=1 branches. We numerically exhibit the parameter dependence of the location and cosmological constant of all extrema. Moreover, we provide their analytic expressions for cases of special interest. Connections with three-dimensional RG-flows are pointed out. Finally, while the mass spectra are found to be parameter independent in most cases, we show that the novel non-supersymmetric branch with SU(3) invariance provides the first counterexample to this., Comment: 47 pages, 8 figures and 3 tables. v3: references added, published version

We perform an exhaustive classification of G_2 invariant extrema of the most general gauged N=8 supergravity in four dimensions. They comprise four branches of Anti-de Sitter solutions labelled by a single parameter. Interestingly, while the gauge groups vary with the parameters, the mass spectra are invariant. Abstract

We construct a one-parameter family of five-dimensional N=2 supergravity Lagrangians with an SU(2,1) / U(2) hypermultiplet. For certain values of the parameter, these are argued to describe the dynamics of scalar modes of superstrings on AdS_5 x T^{1,1}, and therefore to be dual to specific chiral primary operators of Klebanov-Witten superconformal field theory. We demonstrate that, below a critical temperature, the thermodynamics is dominated by charged black holes with hair for the scalars that are dual to the operator of lowest conformal dimension 3/2. Abstract

We discuss a general bound on the possibility to realise inflation in any minimal supergravity with F-terms. The derivation crucially depends on the sGoldstini, the scalar field directions that are singled out by spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The resulting bound involves both slow-roll parameters and the geometry of the K\"ahler manifold of the chiral scalars. Abstract

In this paper, the effect of a non-linear dielectric gate stack on the short-circuit performance of a 1.2 kV SiC MOSFET was analyzed through TCAD simulations. Starting from the TCAD model of a commercial 1.2 kV, its standard gate oxide was replaced with a stack formed by oxide and a non‑linear dielectric, characterized by a temperature dependent permittivity. This variation on temperature can be exploited to reduce the current conducted during short-circuit events, lowering the temperature reached through the device by about 30%, without affecting its static and dynamic performance.

This paper provides an experimental investigation through infrared thermography of the steady-state temperature imbalance arising in parallel SiC MOSFETs. A switched-mode boost power converter based on two arrays of 4 parallel 1.2 kV MOSFETs is selected as a case-study. The analysis aims at proving that a proper device arrangement can minimize the thermal imbalance in the absence of circuit layout optimization.

258. A Geometry-Scalable Physically-Based SPICE Compact Model for SiC MPS Diodes Including the Snapback Mechanism

Abstract

In this paper, a simple compact model for the static behavior of SiC MPS diodes is developed in the form of a SPICE-compatible subcircuit. The model is suited to describe the undesired snapback mechanism likely to occur in unoptimized high-voltage MPS structures with narrow width of the PiN portion and/or very thick drift layer; in particular, the model accounts for the snapback mechanism both as the cell extension varies and as individual portions of Schottky and PiN vary. Sentaurus TCAD simulations of a 10-kV MPS diode are used as a reference for the calibration of the model parameters and accuracy verification.

Abstract

Recently, it has been shown that maximal supergravity allows for non-supersymmetric AdS critical points that are perturbatively stable. We investigate this phenomenon of stability without supersymmetry from the sGoldstino point of view. In particular, we calculate the projection of the mass matrix onto the sGoldstino directions, and derive the necessary conditions for stability. Indeed we find a narrow window allowing for stable SUSY breaking points. Abstract

We study the Brownian motion (BM) of optically trapped graphene flakes. These orient orthogonal to the light polarization, due to the optical constants anisotropy. We explain the flake dynamics, measure force and torque constants and derive a full electromagnetic theory of optical trapping. The understanding of two dimensional BM paves the way to light-controlled manipulation and all-optical sorting of biological membranes and anisotropic macromolecules.

Abstract

The demonstration of enhanced spontaneous emission of nanoscaled optical emitters near metallic nanoparticles and the recent realization of a nanolaser based on surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (spaser) encourage the search for strong coupling regime at the nanoscale. Here we propose the concept of nanopolaritons. We demonstrate with accurate scattering calculations that the strong coupling regime of a single quantum emitter (a semiconductor quantum dot) placed in the gap between two metallic nanoparticles can be achieved. The largest dimension of the investigated system is only 36 nm. Nanopolaritons will advance our fundamental understanding of surface plasmon enhanced optical interactions and could be used as ultra-compact elements in quantum-information technology., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures.

Abstract

The optical trapping of polymeric nanofibers and the characterization of the rotational dynamics are reported. A strategy to apply a torque to a polymer nanofiber, by tilting the trapped fibers using a symmetrical linear polarized Gaussian beam is demonstrated. Rotation frequencies up to 10 Hz are measured, depending on the trapping power, the fiber length and the tilt angle. A comparison of the experimental rotation frequencies in the different trapping configurations with calculations based on optical trapping and rotation of linear nanostructures through a T-Matrix formalism, accurately reproduce the measured data, providing a comprehensive description of the trapping and rotation dynamics., Comment: (21 pages, 5 figures)

Abstract

In vitro digestion of isolated milk proteins results in milk peptides with a variety of actions. However, it remains unclear to what degree protein degradation occurs in vivo in the infant stomach and whether peptides previously annotated for bioactivity are released. This study combined nanospray LC separation with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, comprehensive structural libraries, and informatics to analyze milk from 3 human mothers and the gastric aspirates from their 4- to 12-d-old postpartum infants. Milk from the mothers contained almost 200 distinct peptides, demonstrating enzymatic degradation of milk proteins beginning either during lactation or between milk collection and feeding. In the gastric samples, 649 milk peptides were identified, demonstrating that digestion continues in the infant stomach. Most peptides in both the intact milk and gastric samples were derived from β-casein. The numbers of peptides from β-casein, lactoferrin, α-lactalbumin, lactadherin, κ-casein, serum albumin, bile salt-associated lipase, and xanthine dehydrogenase/oxidase were significantly higher in the gastric samples than in the milk samples (P < 0.05). A total of 603 peptides differed significantly in abundance between milk and gastric samples (P < 0.05). Most of the identified peptides have previously identified biologic activity. Gastric proteolysis occurs in the term infant in the first 2 wk of life, releasing biologically active milk peptides with immunomodulatory and antibacterial properties of clinical relevance to the proximal intestinal tract. Abstract

Background: pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) affects one in 3000 pregnancies, often presenting with aggressive features. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated a cohort of 282 young BC patients (≤45 years old) treated between 1995 and 2019, dividing them into three groups: nulliparous women, women with PABC (diagnosed within 2 years since last pregnancy) and women with BC diagnosed > 2 years since last pregnancy. This last group was further stratified according to the time between pregnancy and BC. The analysis encompassed histological factors (tumor size, histotype, grading, nodal involvement, multifocality, lympho-vascular invasion, hormone receptor expression, Ki-67 index, and HER2 expression), type of surgery and recurrence. Results: Age at diagnosis was younger in nulliparous than in parous women (p < 0.001). No significant differences were noticed regarding histological characteristics and recurrences. At univariate analysis, nodal involvement (OR = 2.4; p < 0.0001), high tumor grade (OR = 2.6; p = 0.01), and lympho-vascular invasion (OR = 2.3; p < 0.05), but not pregnancy (OR = 0.8; p = 0.30), influenced DFS negatively. Multivariate analysis confirmed nodal involvement as the only negative independent prognostic factor for a worse DFS (OR = 2.4; p = 0.0001). Conclusions: in our experience, pregnancy is not an independent adverse prognostic factor for BC DFS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the temporal relationship between objective measures of neighborhood crime and active transportation among children. A sample of 387 children aged 10–13 years from Kingston, Canada were studied between January 2015 and December 2016. Active transportation was measured over 7 days using Geographic Information System loggers. The number of crimes per capita were measured within a 1 km distance of participants' homes for the 24-month period prior to when their active transportation was measured. Abstract

Abstract Background A limitation of measuring sedentary time with an accelerometer is device removal. The resulting nonwear time is typically deleted from the data prior to calculating sedentary time. This could impact estimates of sedentary time and its associations with health indicators. We evaluated whether using multiple imputation to replace nonwear accelerometer epochs influences such estimates in children. Methods 452 children (50% male) aged 10–13 were tasked with wearing an accelerometer (15 s epochs) for 7 days. On average, 8% of waking time was classified as nonwear time. Sedentary time was derived from a “nonimputed” dataset using the typical approach of deleting epochs that occurred during nonwear time, as well as from an “imputed” dataset. In the imputed dataset, each nonwear epoch was re-classified as being as sedentary or not using multiple imputation (5 iterations) which was informed by the likelihood of a wear time epoch being classified as sedentary or not using parameter estimates from a logistic regression model. Estimates of sedentary time and associations between sedentary time and health indicators (cardiometabolic risk factor and internalizing mental health symptoms Z-scores) were compared between the nonimputed and imputed datasets. Results On average, sedentary time was 33 min/day higher in the imputed dataset than in the nonimputed dataset (632 vs. 599 min/day). The association between sedentary time and the cardiometabolic risk factor Z-score was stronger in the imputed vs. the nonimputed dataset (β = 0.137 vs. β = 0.092 per 60 min/day change, respectively). Abstract

Objective: To identify circulating miRNAs associated with ovarian endometriosis (OMA), and to analyze candidate genes targeted by these miRNAs. Methods: Putative regulating miRNAs were identified through an original bioinformatics approach. We first queried the miRWalk 2.0 database to collect putative miRNA targets. Then, we matched it to a transcriptomic dataset of OMA. Moving from gene expression in the tissue to possible alterations in the patient plasma, a selection of these miRNAs was quantified by qRT-PCR in plasma samples from 93 patients with isolated OMA and 95 patients surgically checked as free from endometriosis. Then, we characterized the genes regulated by more than one miRNA and validated them by immunohistochemistry and transfection experiments on endometrial cell primary cultures obtained from endometrial biopsies of 10 women with and without endometriosis with miRNA mimics. Stromal and epithelial cells were isolated and cultured separately and gene expression levels were measured by RT-qPCR. Results: Eight miRNAs were identified by bioinformatics analysis. Two of them were overexpressed in plasma from OMA patients: let-7b-5p and miR-92a-3p (p < 0.005). Three miRNAs, let-7b and miR-92a-3p, and miR-93-5p potentially targeted KIAA1324, an estrogen-responsive gene and one of the most downregulated genes in OMA. Transfection experiments with mimics of these two miRNAs showed a strong decrease in KIAA1324 expression, up to 40%. Immunohistochemistry revealed a moderate-to-intense staining for KIAA1324 in the eutopic endometrium and a faint-to-moderate staining in the ectopic endometrium for half of the samples, which is concordant with the transcriptomic data. Discussion and Conclusion: Our results suggested that KIAA1324 might be involved in endometriosis through the downregulating action of two circulating miRNAs. As these miRNAs were found to be overexpressed, their quantification in plasma could provide a tool for an early diagnosis of endometriosis.

Abstract

In this paper, the impact of the anode contact in SBDs, PiN, JBS and MPS diodes is analyzed through TCAD simulations. The focus of the investigation is the correct simulation of the Schottky barrier height on the different areas of the device to correctly simulate a JBS or MPS structure. It is found that the splitting of the anode contact and an accurate selection of the Schottky barrier height on pzone is necessary to allow the onset of the bipolar conduction in MPS devices. In this way, it is possible to correctly analyze the behavior of an MPS diode, including the snapback phenomenon.

In this paper, two implementations of a SPICE-based compact model for SiC MOSFETs are presented. The two versions rely on widely adopted LEVEL-3 and BSIM 4.6.1 models, respectively. The paper discusses the feasibility of adopting these two models for the description of SiC power MOSFETs. Furthermore, after calibrating the DC characteristics on target experimental data coming from 1.7 kV-60 A MOSFETs, a comparison between the accuracy of the two is presented.

Abstract

Time-based prospective memory (TBPM) is the ability to perform an intended action at a precise moment in the future, such as to go to the office at 9 a.m. for a meeting. In older adults’ everyday life, TBPM is very relevant as health-related intentions are often part of daily activities, such as taking medication regularly or going to appointments with the doctor; yet, it is unclear how TBPM is affected by aging. In fact, the empirical evidence suggested that, although there are age-related differences in the TBPM paradigm among studies that measured TBPM using laboratory tasks, it is still unclear how large the age effect is. Furthermore, it is still unclear which kind of task-related factors can potentially moderate the magnitude of the age-related differences in TBPM, such as duration of the PM target time, frequency of the TBPM tasks, and the interval chosen to compute PM accuracy. Thus, the aims of the present meta-analysis will be (1) to quantify age-related differences in TBPM among studies that measured TBPM (accuracy and time monitoring) using laboratory tasks, and (2) to measure whether and how specific task-related factors (duration and frequency of the PM target time, and interval chosen for correct PM responses), can affect age-related differences in TBPM.
