Expertise in pediatric arrhythmia management is lacking in most low- and middle- income countries (LMIC). Strategies to disseminate education in pediatric electrophysiology are essential to meet this need. Children’s Heartbeat was created to meet the growing demand for pediatric electrophysiologic consultation in LMIC. Children’s Heartbeat is a virtual video-conferencing program that uses the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes model to disseminate knowledge about pediatric arrhythmia management from pediatric electrophysiologists to clinicians in medically under-resourced regions worldwide. Monthly virtual case-based sessions are held with pediatric electrophysiologists and clinicians in medically under-resourced settings to discuss pediatric electrophysiology management. Since its inception, Children’s Heartbeat viewership has grown exponentially to include 181 total registrants, 64 average monthly participants, and an additional 121 average viewers of recorded sessions. Attendees have expressed increased confidence in pediatric arrhythmia management. Children’s Heartbeat has successfully provided pediatric electrophysiology consultation to medically under-resourced regions globally and have increased clinicians’ confidence in caring for children with arrhythmias. Future directions include spreading the program to general pediatric and pediatric cardiology trainees and practicing pediatricians in rural parts of high-income countries and evaluating the direct impact of Children’s Heartbeat on the management of arrhythmias in pediatric patients in LMIC. 216. Are we nearing cattle sector expansion?
- Subjects
ANIMAL herds ,MARKET prices ,PRICES ,SUPPLY & demand ,UNIVERSITY extension - Abstract
The U.S. beef cow herd inventory has been historically low due to market prices and drought conditions, leading producers to sell. Cow slaughter during contraction phases and drought periods can provide insight into producers' intentions to rebuild and market prices. Cow slaughter peaked in 2011 and 2022, but declined by 12% in 2023 compared to 2022. It is projected that total cow slaughter in 2024 will be lower than in 2023, potentially marking the second consecutive year of lower beef cow slaughter volumes. The CME Feeder Cattle Index indicates that prices are impacted by supply and demand dynamics, with prices likely to be supported by tightening feeder supplies during the contraction period. It is possible that there will be another 1-2 years of contraction before entering the expansion phase, but factors such as elevated interest rates and higher input costs may impact the timeline. The expansion phase may unfold more slowly than it did in 2014 due to these factors. [Extracted from the article]

The article discusses the need for a change in deworming practices due to changing weather patterns. Lice, a common winter parasite, over-summer instead of over-winter, which means that applying deworming products early in the fall may not be effective in combating them. The article recommends applying deworming products in December or January to protect against lice during the critical period of February or March. It also emphasizes the importance of strategically balancing lice control and feed intake to maintain economic balance and ensure that cattle can utilize their feed resources during the winter. The article advises consulting with a veterinarian to develop a strategic delousing plan based on the specific parasite load in the region. [Extracted from the article]

Many universities implemented pandemic-related tenure timeline extensions in response to productivity disruptions. However, little is known about the availability, nature, or uptake of these extensions, including which faculty were most likely to extend their timeline. Tenure-track faculty in the United States (n = 385, 64.4% women, 35.3% identifying with a National Institutes of Health-designated racial/ethnic minority group, 73.0% with children, 33.8% with non-child caregiving) completed a survey about their personal/career/institution characteristics, their institution's pandemic extension policy (if any), and whether they extended their timeline. Overall, 94.0% reported that their institutions provided either an extension, unless faculty opted out, or an extension that could be requested. Most respondents (60.0%) elected to extend their tenure timeline due to the pandemic. Significantly greater proportions of respondents taking an extension were men (77.2%), identified with a NIH-designated racial/ethnic minority group (75.7%), reported non-child caregiving (86.3%), and had previously taken at least one timeline extension (82.4%). Pandemic-related extensions in tenure and promotion dossiers will be common, though they may not fully account for more than a year of disruption and may exacerbate disparities. Consequently, effective preparation for evaluating dossiers and other mitigation strategies are needed, to prevent the loss of faculty members who offer great value to their institutions. This article is aimed to problematize a discussion that took place during the first decade of the20th century about the need for mutualism to acquire a more scientific character. It has been shown that democratic mutualism was not articulated only on feelings such as solidarity or fraternity, but that at the same time, the multiple dimensions that it encompassed, such as health insurance, life insurance, education and extension, pensions and resistance, can only be understood as an expression of the social solidarity economy. In this sense, bureaucratic mutualism was aimed to more specific purposes, though during the research time was not the most important in Chile. The research has been essentially carried out from original documents found in the archives of the Directorate of Labor, in the National Archive of the Administration, Santiago, Chile. MASSIVE open online courses ,UNIVERSITY extension ,DISTANCE education ,DISTANCE education students ,TEACHING ,LEARNING - Abstract
Massive open online courses (MOOCs) face the ongoing problem of low pass rates. A number of MOOC learners engage in most or all course activities but fail to pass the course. To improve participation and thereby increase successful completion, this study explores the behavioural differences between certificate achievers and explorers that lead to their different learning outcomes. Eleven behaviours were extracted from more than 80,000 behaviour records for 215 certificate achievers and 456 explorers, which were categorized into four types of activities: graded assessment, content-related, course-related, and interactive activities. Random forest classifier, independent-sample t-testing, and lag sequential analysis were used. The results showed six important behaviours that are highly related to certificate achievement. Certificate achievers engaged in more course-related and graded assessment activities during the course, while explorers engaged in more content-related and interactive activities, and graded assessment activities occurring at the end of the course. Compared to explorers, certificate achievers exhibited more bidirectional behaviours in terms of interactive and course-related activities and more repeated behaviours in terms of course-related and graded assessment activities. The study has significant implications for MOOC learners and instructors in improving learning and teaching performance by implementing appropriate behavioural interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the advent of the Information Society, organizing and selecting knowledge has become essential to stand out and keep up with social trends and the market's innovation processes. The University, in this context, can be an essential actor from its tripod Teaching, Research, and Extension. In this sense, the motivation of this work is to present a Research Observatory, as an option for university extension, that is, an approach to society and the market. This article explains the concept of the Observatory as a space for diffusion and development, lists the essential premises for the reproduction of the model and presents the case study of the creation of the Research Observatory "Digital Older Person - Confronting ICT Illiteracy" in Brazil. As observed, the advantages of creating a Research Observatory range from the possibility of organizing information focused on the improvement and development of a theme to social transformation through information accessible to companies and individuals. The essential points for the enterprise's success are the unity of the multidisciplinary team, the focus for action, and the constant updating of the base using a planned schedule. Finally, the activity also provides an opportunity for the encounter between the University and society, fostering innovation and transforming reality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kansas State University and University of Missouri Extension educators have been providing training and information on agricultural water microbial quality to help produce growers reduce risk. However, we recognized the need to determine knowledge gaps among Kansas and Missouri growers related to agricultural water quality and best practices. A survey was developed to determine future extension outputs and activities to encourage growers to improve their practices related to water quality. The survey was distributed to Kansas and Missouri produce growers attending in-person or online produce-related events in late 2020 and early 2021 and was also distributed through email lists of produce growers from both states. Survey results (n = 101) indicate that 13.9% of the respondents tested their water for generic Escherichia coli more than once a year, whereas 38.6% of the participants had never tested their water. Approximately half (59.3%) of respondents indicated they used municipal water for postharvest uses, whereas 6.7% indicated the use of untreated surface water for postharvest activities. To address potential water contamination risks, researchers suggest that further training and educational resources would help growers improve practices related to water quality and produce safety. GROWTH regulators , *GLYPHOSATE , *HERBICIDE application , *HERBICIDES , *AGRICULTURAL education , *NUTRITIONAL status , *UNIVERSITY extension - Abstract
Nitrogen (N) is one of the promising nutrients for lawn growth and is required for the lawn's proper growth and development, but it also increases mowing frequency. Glyphosate herbicide application in sub-doses, as a growth regulator, can reduce the maintenance costs without any adverse reduction in the density and nutritional status of grasses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influences of nitrogen and glyphosate doses on the growth, aesthetic quality and nutritional status of emerald grass (Zoysia japonica Steud.). The experiment was conducted at the Research and Extension Education Farm of São Paulo State University (UNESP), Ilha Solteira, SP, Brazil, in an Ultisol. The experiment was designed as a randomized block with 12 treatments arranged in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme with 4 replications, comprised of a control (without N), 15 and 30 g N m−2 of urea, applied in five splits annually, and glyphosate doses (0, 200, 400 and 600 g ha−1 of the active ingredient, a.i.). The split N fertilization at the rate of 15 g m−2 and glyphosate at the dose of 400 g ha−1 maintained nutritional status of emerald grass. Nitrogen at the rate 15 g N m−2 (in five splits per year) was observed to produce lower growth traits, an adequate aesthetic quality and longer stability of the nutrients in emerald grasses through lower exportation, with removal of "clipping" after mowing. In addition, glyphosate, at the dose of 400 g a.i. ha−1, was efficient in reducing the leaf area, plant height, shoot dry matter and total dry matter by 18.3, 14.7, 6.8 and 8.1%, respectively, as compared to the control. However, this dose did not impair the coloration and resulted in a lower exportation of nutrients by reducing the need to replenish by fertilization. Therefore, fertilization with 15 g N m−2, associated with application of 400 g a.i. ha−1 of glyphosate, is recommended for emerald grass in the tropical savannah of Brazil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 pandemic , *COMPUTER assisted instruction , *ONLINE education , *MEDICAL education , *UNIVERSITY extension - Abstract
Objective: COVID-19 pandemic caused significant modifications in education of trainees who are in medical speciality training programs. Limiting the number of residents in the clinics, cancelling elective surgical procedures, stopping face to face practical education, and transforming theoretical education into distance learning platforms resulted in alterations in the curriculum. Limited number of studies in the literature surveyed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on specialty training in various medical disciplines. Methods: We addressed to assess the situation of trainees' education using an online questionnaire from the trainees' and directors' perspective during the pandemic. The survey platform SurveyMonkey® was used to distribute the survey and to collect responses. We generated a list of multiple-choice questions about how social distancing affected the delivery of medical education, potential compromise in core training and difficulties in conducting clinical research for the thesis. Results: A total of 364 trainees among 552 (65.9%) under training at our university hospital and 90% of the directors (37 of 41) responded the survey. Almost 78 percent of the trainees claimed that they have been negatively affected during the pandemic. Although majority of the trainees (60.3%) reported that extension of their education program is not necessary, most of the program directors were in tendency of extending the duration of the speciality training period. The participants predominantly considered that online training would keep on being a part of the training program after the pandemic. Conclusion: Education programs are negatively affected during pandemics. However, authorities should manage this deficiency by a new perspective since present trainees are familiar to use technology-driven virtual sources for their education. After the pandemic, computer-assisted online learning and webbased programs should be integrated into educational curriculum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New social norms and significant civic challenges were both brought about by the information age. In this situation, the role of States in promoting public policy is critical, with education serving as a key tenet of the fundamental structure. To improve the practice of cybernetic citizenship in young pupils, we applied the playful pedagogical technique in an original extension project from a series of theoretical/practical lessons. The extensionist action creates a new social reality by bringing the knowledge learned at the university to the community. It is confident that the interdependence of research, teaching, and extension drives the production of knowledge as it forges a trusting relationship between academics and civil society in an effort to change citizens' realities. The project "Audiovisual production and vital strategies" interwove art, life, academic research, and activism with decolonial feminist perspectives. It was carried out as part of an audiovisual laboratory with students from the Federal State University of Rio de Janeiro and Casa Nem, a squatters' settlement, cultural and educational project in Rio de Janeiro led by transgender people in situations of high social vulnerability. The audiovisual Lab was facilitated by a group of artists and educators, and the majority of project participants were Black people who identified as trans* or LGBTQIA+. We worked with critical and emancipatory pedagogies that allowed the impacts of each participants racialized and gendered life experiences to guide the entire creative processes. The project's creative processes were inspired by bodywork dynamics from the field of performance art, and focused on uncovering profound dialogues and depths in each participant's life narratives. In this essay, we reflect critically on aesthetic choices and modes of creation. Through our discussion of the images and processes as a whole, we discuss how reimagining the encounter between pedagogy and audiovisual production established new modes of mediating relationships inside and outside of the university, and connect these processes to broader questions of health promotion. This study emerges from the role of the university professor who must assume as a component of the new approach of the university in Latin America of the XXI century, for which the objective of the investigation is to carry out a reflection on the ethical-social commitments, which derive from the profession to meet the demand of society. For this, the documentary review was used as a methodology, seeking the hermeneutic analysis with criteria of evaluative criticality. The teaching ethical values are exposed, as a reason for the modeling of the students and the communities themselves through the research and extension work of the university professor, which converges in the third mission of the university, in order to face the social and ethical commitment of teaching work, underpinned in two directions: transfer of knowledge, and contribution of the university to the defense of human rights, peace and democracy [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we evaluate the efficiency of extension programmes in the adoption of chemical fertilizers in Ethiopia between 1994 and 2004 using matching techniques in a quasi-experimental setting. In addition to common factors, measures of culture, proxied by ethnicity and religion, aim to control for potential tensions between extension agents and peasants. We find considerable impact of extension services on the first fertilizer adoption. Although, there are several exercises of evaluation of extension services policies, this paper manages to disentangle the policy treatment from other confounding effects for two reasons. Firstly, we focus on the first adoption decision to isolate the effect of new information provided by the extension service. Secondly, we restrict the sample to villages characterized by late adoption, id est villages where adoption had not occurred before and its appearance can be associated with the policy action with more certitude. - Abstract
During the self-evaluation processes of the Proyecto Curricular Arte Danzario, the need to establish some guidelines that can more clearly direct university extension efforts is identified. In this context, a qualitative research study is proposed to review what has been developed in this dimension within the curricular project, which can help identify who are the actors with whom a direct dialogue can be established within the specific field of dance and the needs to which it can respond, Dans le cadre des processus d'auto-évaluation du projet de cursus d'art de la danse, la nécessité de projeter des lignes directrices susceptibles d'orienter plus clairement les processus de vulgarisation est identifiée. - Abstract
Objective: The objective of this article is to identify the contributions and challenges of the University Extension to the process of empowerment of the popular classes in Brazil. Theoretical Reference: The authors studied point to the possibility of the University Extension proposing dialogs and transformations between the university and various sectors of society (Soares, 2011). Maciel (2010) clarifies that the University Extension contributes to the approximation of the university with society, which contributes to the democratization of knowledge and development of the critical sense of the population. However, there are still challenges and difficulties regarding the implementation of the extensionist actions, both in relation to the implementation of the actions, as well as the continuity of the proposals developed. Design/Methodology/Approach: We research and study the articles on University Extension, from its genesis to the present day. A survey of articles on education in the capitalist society model was also carried out. The research was carried out from academic sites and periodicals. Results: Although there is a significant contribution of the University Extension to the process of empowerment of the popular classes in Brazil, there are still difficulties as to the continuous and effective execution in this process. Both as regards long-term actions, as well as the impact of the contradictions that exist in this model of society, which still persists inequalities, injustices and arbitrariness. Research, Practical and Social Implications: We suggest researches and in-depth studies on the theme, that make possible strategies for the Extension dialog with the community and be effective in a continuous and democratic manner. Originality/Value: The studies point to significant importance of the University Extension in terms of a dialogical relationship with society, as well as collaboration in the process of empowerment of the popular classes in B

247. Sociomathematical Norms and Automated Proof Checking in Mathematical Education: Reflections and Experiences

Carl, Merlin and Carl, Merlin
- Abstract
According to a widely held view, mathematical proofs are essentially (indications of) formal derivations, and thus in principle mechanically checkable (this view is defended, for example, by Azzouni [3]). This should in particular hold for the kind of simple proof exercises typically given to students of mathematics learning to write proofs. If that is so, then automated proof checking should be an attractive option for math education at the undergraduate level. An opposing view would be that mathematical proofs are social objects and that what constitutes a mathematical proof can thus not be separated from the social context in which it arises. In particular, such “sociomathematical norms” play a role in teaching situations, see, for example, Stephan [37]. There thus seems to be a tension between the inherent social nature of “natural” mathematical proofs and attempts at their automated verification. In this paper, we explore this tension both theoretically and on the basis of our experiences with developing the Diproche system, a program for the automated verification of natural language proofs in college-level introduction to proof classes (modelled after the example of the Naproche system by Cramer, Koepke et al. [14]) and its use at the Europa-Universität Flensburg during the winter term 2020/2021.

- Abstract
This essay explores university cultural management from a transcomplex perspective, analyzing its role in integrating university functions and social responsibility. Based on the positions of authors such as Schavino (2012); Morin (2000, 2002); and Tünnerman (2003); it examines how the transcomplex vision allows addressing the complexity of university and social reality, promoting an interdisciplinary and holistic approach. The text highlights, following Polo, Lobatón and Arredondo (2014); the importance of cultural extension as a bridge between the university and the community. The concept of University Social Responsibility (USR) is analyzed based on Correia (2015); and Diez (2015); emphasizing its relationship with ethics and institutional values. Drawing on Molina, Colorado, Barradas and Fowler (2015); and Tommasino and Cano (2016); the essay argues that cultural management, through extension, can constitute a transversal axis of knowledge. It concludes, in line with Lanz (2001); and Alarcón (2015); that universities must adopt a systemic and transcomplex perspective to address current challenges, promoting convergence between science, humanities, technology and art, and strengthening university-society links., Este ensayo explora la gerencia cultural universitaria desde una perspectiva transcompleja, analizando su rol en la integración de las funciones universitarias y la responsabilidad social.
