Abstract

Recently, organic radicals in solid state have attracted much current interests with regard to photoinduced phase transitions, Peierls transitions, molecular Mott insulators, synthetic metals, and so on. They are expected to play a major role in novel materials research because of their potential in future applications to molecular magnetic and optical devices. In photoinduced phenomena, light irradiation stimulates the macroscopic phase transition between the ground state and a metastable state, and may control various properties including, e.g., magnetic and chromic properties of materials. Abstract

Observation of transient behavior of excited states at different frequencies is essential and of great importance in studying ultrafast photochemical and photophysical processes, such as photosynthesis, energy transfer, photochromic reaction, and carrier dynamics, of nano- and micromaterials. To investigate such phenomena, femtosecond laser spectroscopy has been extensively utilized for the last two decades [1]. In this review, we pay attention to three types of new femtosecond laser spectroscopy: optical Kerr gate (OKG) luminescence spectroscopy, transient grating spectroscopy combined with a phase mask, and real-time pump-probe imaging spectroscopy, which are applicable to the observation of transient behavior of excited states and the evaluation of optical functional properties of nano- and micromaterials. Abstract

We have prepared DPP-hematin (DPP=2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20-dodecaphenylporphyrin), and characterized it by Mössbauer and magnetic measurements. It is concluded that DPP-hematin is most likely a monomer, as is expected from the distorted nonplanar structure of the porphyrin, in contrast to usual hematins: hematins derived from usual porphyrins are μ-oxo dimers. Abstract

At present, the limitation of Phenotype-based genetic screening in embryonic stem cells (ESCs) is the diploid nature of the genome. Since it is known that cells deficient in the Bloom's syndrome gene (Blm) show an increased rate of homologous recombination, we have developed a new system to conditionally regulate the Blm allele for introduction of bi-allelic mutations across the genome. Transient deficiency of Blm induces homologous recombination not only between sister chromatids but also between homologous chromosomes, resulting in a high rate of loss of heterozygosity (LOH). Introduction of genome-wide mutations in ESCs can be achieved by retroviral vector. In combination, using genome-wide mutagenesis and transient loss of Blm expression, we have generated ES libraries with bi-allelic mutations. These results show that this new system is very efficient for identifying gene functions in ESCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Formation of the antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) ordering in YbSb (NaCl-type structure) was evidenced microscopically with the 121Sb and 123Sb nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. We have observed in the NMR linewidth below TQ=5 K the appearance of an additional field-independent contribution that is proportional to the nuclear electric-quadrupole moment. Thus, the field-independent contribution can be addressed not to any long-range magnetic orderings but to a broken symmetry of the charge distribution associated with the AFQ ordering. The AFQ ordering also gives rise to a large anisotropic Knight shift broadening caused by the anisotropy in the transferred hyperfine field and/or magnetic susceptibility. Fluctuations of the Yb 4f moments are also investigated by using the 121,123Sb spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements

Abstract

Doxapram is the only dedicated respiratory stimulant used to aid recovery of breathing after major surgery. Doxapram acts on peripheral chemoreceptors and although the central action of doxapram has been suggested, its detailed neuronal mechanism is unknown. We assessed doxapram-induced changes in spontaneous cervical nerve (C4) inspiratory activity and the firing of action potentials in pre-inspiratory and inspiratory neurones in the medulla. Experiments were performed in neonatal rat brainstem-spinal cord preparations, which can produce respiratory rhythm for several hours under in vitro conditions. Doxapram application (for 15 min) increased the frequency and amplitude of C4 activity dose-dependently. Doxapram induced changes in the electrophysiological properties of pre-inspiratory and inspiratory neurones. Our results suggest that respiratory activity enhancement was likely to be induced via effects on the potassium channels of pre-inspiratory and inspiratory neurones and indicate the central actions of doxapram.
