Clean eating as a dietary form of 'good food' has grown in popularity in the last decade. This article explores how it has come to be associated with certain ingredients and a general discourse of wellbeing. Whilst being largely discredited as psuedo-science, many of these ingredients have found their ways into recipes in the cookery books of those who declare a clear opposition to clean eating. In particular, the cookery books of Nigella Lawson will be explored as she states a preference for new ingredients that are typically associated with clean eating. This case shows how such contestable notions of good food become normalized in culture.

Seeds of the genus Nigella plants as folk medicine are often used to prevent and treat asthma, diarrhea, dyslipidemia, and other diseases around the world. Pharmacological researches showed that seed extract and seed oil have antibacterial, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and hepatoprotective effects which attributed to their bioactive constituents such as alkaloids, saponins, flavones, and phenols. This paper has covered recent progresses on chemical and pharmacological researches on these plants, including their compounds and pharmacological effects. It was found that the chemical component researches were focused on the seed oil. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the profile of the whole constituents in the seeds.

The study of intracellular gene transfer may allow for the detection of interesting evolutionary processes such as ancient polyploidization. We compared 24 plastid genomes (plastomes) from tribe Delphinieae, one from tribe Nigelleae and one from tribe Ranunculeae, including five newly sequenced genomes. The functional transfers of the plastids rpl32 and rps16 to the nucleus in tribe Delphinieae were identified. Unexpectedly, we discovered multiple divergent copies of the nuclear-encoded plastid rpl32 in the genus Aconitum. Phylogenetic and synonymous substitution rate analyses revealed that the nuclear-encoded plastid rpl32 underwent two major duplication events. These ancient gene duplication events probably occurred via multiple polyploidization events in Aconitum between 11.9 and 24.7 Mya. Furthermore, our sequence rate analysis indicated that the eight plastid-encoded rpl subunits in Aconitum had a significantly accelerated evolutionary rate compared to those in other genera, suggesting that highly divergent paralogs targeted to the plastid may contribute to an elevated rate of evolution in plastid rpl genes. In addition, heteroplasmy of the plastid matK from two Aconitum species suggested the existence of potentially functional plastid maturases in its plastome. Our results provide insight into the evolutionary history of the tribe Delphinieae.

We examined the seed morphology of Nigella, Garidella and Komaroffia to aid systematics and taxonomy. The seeds of 21 taxa in 20 species from Mediterranean and West Asian countries were studied using both zoom stereo and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and unweighted average linkage analysis (UPGMA) were performed to assess the contribution of seed characters to the taxonomy of the tribe. Representative pictures from zoom stereo microscopy and SEM studies and measurement of seeds are presented. Most studied species showed unique seed surface sculpturing features, and seed shape, size and surface sculpturing separated the studied taxa into five main groups. However, the variation in seed shape and color were found to be in conflict with the generic taxonomy while macromorphological characters were found more congruent with the sectional taxonomy than with the generic taxonomy. Five main types of seed ornamentations – rugulose + striate, granulate, smooth, rugulose and mucronulate – were identified. Patterns in seed micromorphology strongly supported the sectional level taxonomy of Nigella. Two of the three sections of the genus were found to be well differentiated in terms of seed characters. Furthermore, seed morphology alone provide good support to Garidella as a distinct genus, but shows less taxonomic value for Komaroffia.

Background: Radiation induced brain and cerebellum injury is common in patients receiving radiotherapy for head and neck tumors. Administration of antioxidants before radiation as vitamin E, nigella sativa oil and melatonin could be valuable in limiting this injury.Material and Methods: 40 rats were divided into five different groups. Group Ι: served as the control group and subdivided into 4subgroups. subroup Ia: negative control, subgroup Ib: animals received vitamin E only (300 mg/kg orally once, subgroup Ic: animals received nigella sativa oil only (1ml/kg orally once and subgroup Id: animals received melatonin only 100 mg/kg intraperitoneally once: Group ΙΙ: animals were exposed to x ray irradiation (XRI) (8 Gy whole body). Group ΙΙΙ: animals were pretreated with vitamin E (300 mg/kg orally once 1h before XRI. Group ΙV: animals were pretreated with nigella sativa oil(1ml/kg orally once1h before XRI). Group V: animals were pretreated with melatonin (100 mg/kg intraperitoneally once 1h before XRI). Animals were sacrificed 48h after irradiation. Brain and cerebellum were dissected, formalin fixed and processed for histological and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunostainig. The number of GFAP positive astrocytes were counted and statistically analyzed using SPSS program.Results: Radiation induced loss of lamellar pattern in the cerebral cortex with degeneration and necrosis of cortical nerve cells. In the cerebellum, purkinje cell degeneration was observed. Radiation induced a significant increase in the number of GFAP positive astrocytes in both cerebral and cererbellar cortices compared to the control group. In groups treated with vitamin E, nigella sativa oil and melatonin, there was partial improvement in cerebral and cerebellar changes with a significant decrease in the number of GFAP positive astrocytes.Conclusion: The use of antioxidants such as vitamin E, nigella and melatonin could limit radiation induced injury in brain and cerebellum.

One of the most promising nanostructures, core/shell structured co-axially electrospun nanofibers have been widely used in many applications such as self-healing, wound dressing/healing, drug and gene delivery and tissue engineering. Core/shell structured nanofibers have generally been produced using the coaxial electrospinning method. In this study, the coaxial electrospinning using the double injectors technique was applied for investigating the processing parameters for the PVA/Nigella seed oil solutions affecting the core/shell nanofiber morphology. Results showed that the processing parameters, such as the flow rate, voltage difference and solution concentration had significant effects on the core/shell nanofiber morphology. Nanofiber morphologies were characterized using SEM-Scanning Electron Microscopy techniques. The symptoms of Parkinsonism and oral dyskinesia have been showing to be induced by neuroleptics that significantly affect its clinical use. In this study, we investigate whether Nigella sativa-oil (NS) (black cumin seeds)-a traditional medicine used for the seizure treatment in eastern country-may reduce the haloperidol (HAL)-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS)-like behavior in rats. After combine treatment with HAL (1 mg/kg) on NS (0.2 ml/rat), rats displayed a significant decreased EPS-like behavior including movement disorders and oral dyskinesia as compared to controls. Immunohistochemical analysis indicates that NS reduced astrogliosis in caudate and accumbens nuclei. These results suggest that NS may consider as an adjunct to antipsychotics to reduce the EPS-like side effect.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease, which affects large number of population all over the world. Diabetes is associated with many complications as dyslipidemia, coronary heart diseases and non alcoholic fatty liver diseases. More than 400 traditional medicinal plants have been recorded for helping in controlling such disease. This review discusses the effects of most common plants (Foenugreek, Nigella and Termis) used in Saudi Arabia and some other Arab countries as antidiabetic agents. The usage of the mixture or each plant alone corrected the blood glucose level and increase insulin secretion with definite increase in the number and diameter of beta pancreatic cells in the diabetic rats. Also, improve the associated dyslipidemia, and ameliorated most of all damage effects of Alloxan on hematological parameters present in diabetic rats. So, it can control most of the metabolic risk factors of coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetic. Finally, it appeared to be a useful agent in improving fatty changes in the liver texture associated with DM. It can be concluded that, water extract of the mixture of Foenugreek, Nigella and Termis is the most powerful in amelioration hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and most of all damage effects of Alloxan on the liver and hematological parameters.

Recently, in different countries of the world, attention has been paid towards exploitation of higher plant products as novel chemotherapeutants in plant protection. The antifungal activity of aqueous extracts of Garlic (Allium sativum, L.); Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.); Black cumin (Nigella) (Nigella sativa L.); Cinnamon (Cinnamum zeylanicum);Clove bud (Dianthus caryphlus L.); and Ginger (Zingber officinalis, L.) was investigated for controlling Monosporascus cannonballus sudden wilt disease of watermelon plants at two concentrations i.e., 1 and 5%. The pathogenic fungus isolates have been isolated from infected plant parts and identified on the basis of their morphological and cultural characteristics. All the plant extracts showed considerable diminution of sudden wilt disease infection on watermelon plants under greenhouse conditions. Garlic followed by Clove bud extracts were the most effective in disease control. Significant differences were noticed between all tested plant extracts and their used concentrations in infested pots by three highly pathogenic isolates. Also, essentialoil of Garlic, Cinnamon bud, Marjoram (Origanum majorana L.), and Black pepper were used in controlling the same disease of watermelon plants. Drenching soil with plant oils suspension in all used concentrations decreased sudden wilt disease parameters of watermelon plants cv. Giza 1 that sown in pots infested with one of the three virulent isolates of M. cannonballs in comparison to control. Suspensions of Garlic oil followed by Black pepper oil were affected and decreased disease parameters as well as the inhibition of disease were increased by increasing of plant oil concentrations. Comparative studies were done in controlling sudden wilt disease of watermelon plants using three chemical fungicides, i.e. Rizolex T., Rofral and Bellis. The fungicide Bellis was more effective in controlling disease infection; also increasing fungicide concentration up to 1000 ppm was more effective in disease control. The application of botanical extracts for disease management could be less expensive, easily available, nonpolluting and eco-friendly.

The study involved the investigation of the antioxidant and antihypertensive properties of the phenolic–protein complexes obtained from isolated protein fractions from Nigella damascena and Nigella arvensis. Protein fractions from flours made from the seeds of Nigella species were isolated and included albumin, globulin, glutelin-1, glutelin-2 and prolamin. Albumin and glutelin-1 fractions were the predominant proteins in the two Nigella species studied in terms of protein content and percent protein yield. Free phenolics were extracted from the isolated protein fractions by methanol treatment at either 25 °C or 60 °C followed by acid and base hydrolysis to obtain bound phenolics. The free and bound phenolic composition was assessed by RP-HPLC. The highest phenolic content was observed in the free phenolic extract at 25 °C (FP-25 °C) in glutelin-2 of both Nigella species. The free and bound phenolics of the protein fractions were tested for angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory and antioxidant activities. The greatest ACE inhibitory activities were seen for the free and bound phenolic extracts obtained from glutelin-2 and globulin fractions of both Nigella species. The highest antioxidant activities were observed in the extracted phenolics from glutelin-1 and globulin from N. damascena and albumin from N. arvensis. Only a weak correlation was seen between the phenolic content of the isolated protein fractions and the ACE inhibitory and antioxidant activities. The present study indicates that phenolic–protein complexes in the Nigella species have significant antioxidant and ACE inhibitory properties although the bioactivities of the protein fractions are not closely related to their total phenolic content. Background: Dermatophytosis constitutes a major public health problem in different countries. The most common factors affecting the distribution and transmission of dermatophyte infections are climatic conditions, general hygiene, and animal contact. In Egypt, the prevalence of dermatophytosis has not been well clarified. Several antifungal agents are available to manage these infections but drug resistance, severe side effects and its very poor penetration can result in treatment failure. Objectives: This study aimed to detect the prevalence of dermatophyte infections in Assuit University Hospital and to screen for anti-dermatophytic activity of some plant essential oils to discover their medicinal potential for future applications as antifungal agents. Methodology: Samples were collected from 50 patients attending dermatology clinic at Assuit University Hospital and clinically diagnosed as tinea infections. Isolation and laboratory identification of dermatophytes were performed by direct microscopic examination, Sabouraud , s dextrose agar and rice grains medium culture. Extracellular enzymatic activities (urease, lipase and protease) were tested. Some natural oils (dill seed, garlic, ginger, nigella seed, olive, peppermint and riccinus) were screened for their anti-dermatophytic activities by disc diffusion methods. Result: Dermatophytosis was diagnosed in 40 (80%) of all patients examined, the prevalence of dermatophytosis in male (57.5%) was higher than in female (42.5%), the most common dermatophyte infection diagnosed was tinea capitis (65%), followed by tinea pedis (17.5%). Four species belonging to two genera were identified, 20 (50%) T. violaceum, 14 (35%) M. canis, 3 (7.5%) T. mentagrophytes and 3 (7.5%) T. rubrum. All tested oils have dermatophytic activities except dill and olive oils. Nigella oil was the most active against growth of T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum. Ginger oil was the most active against T. violaceum and M. canis. Garlic and ginger oils had active effect against T. rubrum . Conclusion: Nigella, ginger and garlic oils had proved a promising effectiveness against dermatophytes and can be used in the development of new anti-dermatophytic preparations.

Two distinct lipase inhibitor cocktails RAYstat4ns and SHAMstat3pg have been purified from seeds of Nigella sativa and Punica granatum respectively. Structural characterization has shown RAYstat4ns to be a mixture of 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and one saturated fatty acid while SHAMstat3pg is a triglyceride mixture comprising of three different kinds of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Ethanol extracted fractions of seeds of Nigella saliva and Punic a granatum having high lipase inhibitory activity were purified by HPLC followed by TLC to yield respectively RAYstat4ns and SHAMstat3pg . These plant based lipase inhibitors have shown good lipase inhibitory activity against pancreatic lipase with mixed type of inhibition. RAYstat4ns and SHAMstat3pg have also shown inhibition of hormone sensitive lipase. The experimental IC50 of the purified lipase inhibitors RAYstat4ns and SHAMstat3pg was found to be respectively 4.02μg/μl and 7.35 μg/μl for pancreatic lipase and 6.31 μg/μl and 11.45 μg/μl respectively for hormone sensitive lipase. Hence ,these plant-based lipase inhibitors can be used in controlling lipolysis and insulin resistance in addition to inhibiting absorption of dietary lipid into the living system. In vivo studies could help confirm the potency of these plant based isolates as efficient lipase inhibitors. Bio-inspired silver nanoparticles were synthesized with the aid of a novel method, using leaves of the plant Nigella sativa. After drying the leaves in air, they were first sweltered in boiling distilled water and the liquid was filtered subsequently. The result was the brothused to reduce solutions including various concentrations of silver nitrate in a proper amount of pH. The displayed UV–visible spectra identified formation of silver nanoparticles whenever the colorless initial acclimated mixture turned brown. The centrifuged powder samples were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction analysis (EDX) methods. The results clearly revealed that the final particles of precipitated powder are high purity agglomerates of silver nanoparticles. Besides, the effects of various amounts of the silver salt on particle size of nano silver were studied, using a particle size analyzer. FTIR results also indicated the role of different functional groups in the synthetic process.

Elaborate petals are present in many flowering plants lineages and have greatly promoted the success and evolutionary radiation of these groups. How elaborate petals are made, however, remains largely unclear. Petals of Nigella (Ranunculaceae) have long been recognized as elaborate and can thus be an excellent model for the study of petal elaboration. Here, by conducting detailed morphological, micromorphological, anatomical, developmental and evolutionary studies on the petals of Nigella species, we explored the processes, general patterns and underlying mechanisms of petal elaboration. We found that petals of Nigella are highly complex, and the complexity can be reflected at various levels. We also found that evolutionary elaboration of the Nigella petals is a gradual process, involving not only modifications of pre-existing structures but also de novo origination of new characters. Further investigations indicated that the elaboration and diversification of Nigella petals were accomplished by modifying the ancestral trajectory of petal development, a process known as developmental repatterning. Our results not only provide new insights into the development and evolution of elaborate petals, but also highlight the necessity of conducting multiple-level investigations for understanding the processes, patterns and underlying mechanisms of plant evolution.

Bu çalışmada, broyler civcivlerde çörek otu tohumu (ÇÖT) ve bunun farmasötik olarak etkin maddesi kabul edilen uçucu yağ asiti timokinonun (TQ), aflatoksinin (AF) biyotransformasyon mekanizmaları ve detoksifikasyonu üzerine olan etkinlikleri, histopatolojik ve immunohistokimyasal (İHK) olarak moleküler düzeyde araştırıldı. Çalışmada, her bir grupta 20'şer adet 1 günlük broyler civciv bulunan 6 grup oluşturuldu; kontrol grubu (normal yem), AF grubu (2mg/kg aflatoksin), TQ grubu (300mg/kg timokinon), ÇÖT grubu (%5 çörek otu tohumu), AF+TQ grubu (2mg/kg aflatoksin+300mg/kg timokinon) ve AF+ÇÖT grubu (2mg/kg aflatoksin+%5 çörek otu tohumu) içeren yemlerle 28 gün süreyle beslendi. Deneme süresi sonunda her bir gruptan rastgele 10'ar adet broyler civciv seçilerek, AST, ALT, ALP, GGT, bilirubin, total protein ve total kolesterol ölçümleri için kan alındı. Çalışmada kullanılan hayvanların canlı ağırlıkları belirlendikten sonra sistemik nekropsileri yapılarak karaciğerin ağırlığı ve makroskobik bulgular kaydedildi. Histopatolojik ve immunohistokimyasal (AFB1-DNA adüktü, PXR, AhR, CAR, CYP1A1, CYP2A6, glutatyon, GSTA3) incelemeler için örnekler alınarak %10'luk tamponlu formaldehit solüsyonunda tespiti ve rutin doku takibi yapıldı. Nigella Sativa ve Equisetum Arvense Bitki Ekstraktlarının Ratlarda Deneysel Olarak Oluşturulan Yaraların İyileşmesi Üzerindeki EtkileriAmaç: Yara iyileşmesi cerrahi operasyonlarda önemli bir basamaktır ve başarıda ana kriterlerden biridir. Fitoterapi son yıllarda cerrahide hem yumuşak hem de kemik doku iyileşmesine destek olabilecek bir alan haline gelmiştir. Bu çalışmada ratlarda deneysel olarak oluşturulmuş mukoza ve kemik yara dokusuna uygulanan EA ve NS ekstraktlarının iyileşmeye olan etkilerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.Materyal ve Metod: Çalışmada 84 adet erkek rat (Sprague Dawley) kullanılmıştır. Ratların sağ mandibulasına cerrahi frezle defektler oluşturulmuştur. Defekt bölgesine EA ve NS'nin etanolle elde edilen ekstraktları konularak primer kapatılmıştır. Kontrol grubunda defekte ekstrakt konulmadan bölge süture edilmiştir. Ratlar 1., 3. ve 5. haftalarda sakrifiye edilerek oluşturulan defektlerin iyileşmesi değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmada histopatolojik, immunohistokimyasal (BALP ve kemik sialoprotein) ve biyokimyasal (osteokalsin, NTX ve TOS/TAS) yöntemler kullanılmıştır. Biyokimyasal incelemeler ratların sol ventrikülünden alınan kan örnekleri üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sonuçlar istatistiksel yöntemlerle değerlendirilmiştir.Bulgular: EA ve NS ekstraktlarının kombine şekilde uygulandığı gruplarda, HKİS skorları, BALP, kemik sialoprotein ve osteokalsin düzeyleri istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılık göstermiştir (EA+NS 3. hafta HKİS: 7.00±0.46, EA+NS 5. hafta HKİS: 8.00±0.54). Biyokimyasal biyo-belirteç verilerinde ise BALP ve sialoprotein ekspresyonlarında olduğu gibi korele bir artış izlenmemiştir. Sonuç: Defekt bölgesine uygulanan ekstraktların akut enflamasyon sürecini kısalttığı, fibröz kallus formasyonuna geçişi hızlandırdığı ve osteoblastik aktiviteye katkıda bulunduğu saptandı. Tüm haftalarda ekstrakt uygulanan gruplarda kontrol grubuna kıyasla daha iyi iyileşme skorları elde edilmiştir. Kemik doku iyileşmesinde EA ve NS'nin kombine kullanımının iyileşme sürecini hızlandırdığı gözlenmiştir. Bu bitki ekstraktlarının cerrahi tedavilerde etkili bir uygulama yöntemi olabileceği düşünülmektedir. In recent years, phytotherapy has become a treatment of choice which can support both soft and bone tissue healing. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of EA and NS extracts applied to experimentally performed bone defects.Material and Method: 84 male rats (Sprague Dawley) were used in the present study. Surgical defects were performed on the right mandible. Groups were divided into four as; control, EA,NS,EA+NS (combined). Extracts were applied to the defect area in all experimental groups. In control group, bone defect was closed without any application. Rats were sacrificed in the 1.,3. and 5. weeks and the healing scores of the defects were examined histopathologically. Biochemical (osteocalcin, NTX and TOS/TAS), immunohistochemical (BALP, bone sialoprotein) parameters were determined. The results were evaluated by statistical methods.Results: In the combined theraphy group HPBS, BALP, bone sialoprotein and osteocalcin levels were significantly different (EA+NS 3.week HKIS:7.00±0.46, EA+NS 5.week HKIS:8.00±0.54). There was no increase reported in biochemical marker scores as in the BALP and sialoprotein expression.Conclusion: The extracts applied to the defect area reduced the process of acute inflammation and accelerated formation of fibrous callus and contributed to osteoblastic activity. Combined therapy was accelerated the healing process in all weeks compared to control group. Plant extracts can be used as an effective method in surgical treatment. Giriş ve Amaç: Üreteropelvik bileşke (ÜPB) obstrüksiyonu çocuklardaki hidronefrozun (HN) en sık sebebidir. Bu çalışmada sıçanlarda unilateral tam ÜPB obstruksiyonu oluşturularak, ipsilateral ve kontralateral böbrek dokusu üzerinde timokinonun antioksidan etkinliğinin incelenmesi amaçlandı.Gereç ve Yöntem: Nisan 2018-Mayıs 2018 tarihleri arasında Bezmialem Üniversitesi Deney Hayvanları Etik Kurulu'ndan onay alınarak aynı merkezde yapıldı. Ağırlıkları 90 ile 120 gram arasında değişen 34 adet erkek Wistar sıçan kullanıldı. Randomize 4 grup oluşturuldu. MY: Mısır yağı verilen grup (n=8), TK: Timokinon verilen grup (n=8), HNMY: HN yapılan ve mısır yağı verilen grup (n=9), HNTK: HN yapılan ve timokinon verilen grup (n=9). Çalışma gruplarında sol ÜPB kılavuz tel ile birlikte 4/0 ipek kullanılarak bağlandı. 21 gün beklendi. Timokinon 1 ml mısır yağında çözünerek 40 mg/kg/gün dozunda oral yoldan verildi. Böbrek dokularında biyokimyasal olarak malondialdehit (MDA), süperoksit dismutaz (SOD), glutatyon redüktaz (GR), total oksidan ve antioksidan seviyeleri (TAS ve TOS) ve KIM-1 (böbrek hasar molekülü) çalışıldı. Histopatolojik olarak hematoksilen eozin ve Masson trikrom boya kullanılarak pelvisin epitelyum hasarı, glomerüler büzüşme ve skleroz, tübül hasarı, interstisyel ödem, inflamasyon, fibrozis ve damarsal konjesyon açısından değerlendirildi. Çalışma verileri Shapiro-Wilk testi, Kruskal-Wallis testi, Dunn-Bonferroni testi, Wilcoxon testi, Fisher-Freeman-Haltonexact testi kullanılarak istatiksel analiz yapıldı.Bulgular: Çalışmaya 33 wistar sıçan dahil edildi. 21. günde sakrifikasyon sonrası ÜPB oluşturulan böbreklerde makroskobik HN olduğu görüldü. Bu araştırma, 2016-2017 yıllarında Konya ekolojik şartlarında kuru- sulu koşullarda ve farklı ekim zamanlarına göre yetiştirilen çörekotu türlerinin (Nigella sativa ve Nigella damascena) verim ve bazı kalite özellikleri üzerine etkilerini tespit etmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Araştırmada tarla denemeleri Konya ilinde çiftçi koşullarında ve kalite analizler S. Ü. Ziraat Fakültesi Tıbbi Bitkiler Laboratuvarında yürütülmüştür. Bu araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlara göre; kuru-sulu koşulların ve farklı ekim zamanlarının çörekotu türlerinin verim ve bazı kalite özellikleri üzerine önemli etkilerinin olduğu söylenebilir. En yüksek bitki boyu sulu koşullarda 3. ekim zamanında yetiştirilen bitkilerde ortalama N. sativa'da 47.07 cm ve N. damascena'de 36.87 cm olmuştur. Kuru koşullarda yetiştirilen N. sativa bitkisinde en yüksek bitki boyu 36.50 cm iken, N. damascena bitkisinde 25.60 cm olmuştur. En yüksek tohum verimi her iki türde de sulu şartlarda ve 3. ekim zamanında yetiştirilen N. sativa'da 83.32 kg/da ve N. damascena 84.15 kg/da elde edilmiştir. Uçucu yağ bileşenlerinden en yüksek timokinon içeriği sulu şartlarda ve 3. ekim zamanında yetiştirilen N. sativa tohumlarından %17.98 tespit edilmiştir. N. damascena tohumlarının uçucu yağlarında timokinon bileşeni tespit edilememiştir. Bu araştırma sonuçlarına göre; Konya ve benzer ekolojilerde verim bakımından kültürü yapılan çörekotu türlerinin erken ekim zamanında ve sulu koşullarda yetiştirilmesi kuru koşullara göre daha uygun olduğu söylenebilir., This research was carried out to in order to determine the effects of different sowing dates and dry-irrigated agriculture conditons cultivated black cumin species (Nigella sativa and Nigella damascena) under Konya ecological conditions in 2016-2017 on yield and some quality properties. In the study, The field trial studies were carried out farmer conditions in Konya and quality analyzes at the Medical Plants Research laboratory in Agricultural Faculty of Selcuk University. According to the results obtained from this research; It can be said that black cumin varieties cultivated according to different sowing dates and irrigated-dry conditions have significant effects on yield and some quality characteristics. The average of highest plant height was 47.07 cm in N. sativa and 36.87cm in N. damascena in plants cultivated at the 3. sowing date and under irregated conditions. Under the dry conditions, ıt was 36.50 cm in N. sativa (3. sowing date), while it was 25.60 cm in N. damascena (3.sowing date). The highest seed yield was 83.32 kg / da in N. sativa and 84.14 kg/ da in N. damascena cultivated at the 3. sowing date and irregated conditions. The highest thymokinone content of the essential oil components was determined 17.98 % from N. sativa seeds cultivated under irrigated conditions and at the 3.sowing date. The thymokinone component was not determined in the essential oils of N. damascena seeds. According to the results of this research; In terms of yield in Konya and similar ecologies, the cultivation of black cumin species in the early sowing date and in irregated conditions may be more appropriate than dry conditions.

Balıkesir Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, Kimya Ana Bilim Dalı, Aktif karbon, geniş gözenekli yüzey alanına, ayarlanabilir gözenek yapısına ve yüzey kimyasına, inert veya indirgenmiş atmosferlerde yüksek sıcaklıklarda iyi ısıl dayanıklılığa ve düşük asit-baz reaktivitesine sahip bir malzeme olduğundan dolayı birçok alanda kendisine kullanım alanı bulmaktadır. Son zamanlarda, aktif karbon eldesi için hammadde olarak hem doğrudan biyokütle hem de atık biyokütle kullanılmaktadır. Biyokütleden elde edilen aktif karbon, adsorpsiyon kapasitesinin iyi olması yanında yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklardan elde edilmesi gibi önemli bir özelliğe de sahiptir. Bu çalışmada, metilen mavisinin atık sulardan uzaklaştırılması için çörek otu küspesi atık biyokütlesinden geliştirilen biyosorbentin etkinliğini araştırılmıştır. Çörek otu küspesi atık biyokütlesi, kimyasal aktivasyon (ağırlıkça farklı oranlarda ZnCl2 ile) ve karbonizasyon (800 ºC ) teknikleriyle biyosorbent olarak geliştirilmiştir. Geliştirilen biyosorbent, BET, FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDX, XRD ve TGA cihazları ile karakterize edilmiştir. Çeşitli şartlarda sentezlenen bu biyosorbentler arasından BET ile belirlenen en yüksek yüzey alanına sahip olan aktif karbon örneği ile sulu çözeltilerden boyar maddelerin giderimine ait çalışma yapılmıştır. Sulu çözeltilerden metilen mavisi adsorpsiyonu, pH ve sıcaklık parametreleriyle incelenmiştir. Adsorpsiyon prosesinde aktif karbon yüzeyinde metilen mavisinin adsorplanmış miktarının artan pH ve sıcaklıkla arttığı deneysel veriler sonucu bulunmuştur. Deneysel veriler Langmuir ve Freundlich adsorpsiyon izotermleri kullanılarak analiz edilmiş ve adsorpsiyon verilerinin Langmuir izotermi ile oldukça iyi bir şekilde uyum gösterdiği sonucuna varılmıştır. Adsorpsiyon ölçümleri adsorpsiyon prosesinin çok hızlı ve fiziksel bir proses olduğunu göstermektedir. Boyar maddelerin giderim hızının pH ve sıcaklıktaki artış ile arttığı bulunmuştur. Metilen mavisinin adsorpsiyonu için entalpi değeri (ΔH⁰) 30,63 kj/mol, entropi değeri (ΔS⁰) 0,21 kj/mol K olarak hesaplanmıştır. Adsorpsiyona ait bu termodinamik parametreler, adsorpsiyon işleminin endotermik doğasını doğrulamaktadır., Since activated carbon has a wide porous surface area, adjustable pore structure and surface chemistry, good heat resistance at high temperatures in inert or reduced atmospheres and low acid-base reactivity, it finds its use in many areas. Recently, both direct biomass and waste biomass are used as raw materials for the production of activated carbon. Activated carbon derived from biomass has an important feature such as good adsorption capacity, as well as obtaining renewable energy sources. In this study, the efficacy of biosorbent developed from black seed meal waste biomass for the removal of methylene blue from waste waters was investigated. Black seed meal waste biomass has been developed as a biosorbent by chemical activation (with different ZnCl2 by weight) and carbonization techniques (800 ⁰C). The developed biosorbent was characterized by BET, FTIR-ATR, SEM-EDX, XRD and TGA devices. Among the biosorbents synthesized under various conditions, the study of removal of dyestuffs from aqueous solutions was made with the activated carbon sample having the highest surface area determined by BET. The methylene blue adsorption from the aqueous solutions was examined by the pH and temperature parameters. In the adsorption process, the adsorbed amount of methylene blue on the activated carbon surface increased with increasing pH and temperature. The experimental data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms and it was concluded that the adsorption data were quite well matched with the Langmuir isotherm. Adsorption measurements show that the adsorption process is a very fast and physical process. It was found that the rate of removal of dyes increased with the pH and temperature increase. The enthalpy value (ΔH⁰) for the adsorption of methylene blue was calculated as 30.63 kj/mol and the entropy value (ΔS⁰) was calculated as 0.21 kj/mol K. These thermodynamic parameters of adsorption confirm the endothermic nature of the adsorption process.

Yapılan bu tez çalışmasında, çörek otu (Nigella Sativa), tarçın (Cinnamomum), karanfil (Syzygium aromaticum), portakal (Citrus Sinensis), limon (Citrus Limon) ve yasemin (Jasminum Nudiflorum) bitkilerinin soxhlet ekstraksiyon yöntemiyle özütleri elde edilmiştir. Bitki özütlerinin antimikrobiyal aktivite çalışmalarında Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ve Streptococcus pneumoniae bakterileri kullanılmıştır. Antimikrobiyal aktivite belirleme çalışmalarında kuyu difüzyon metodu kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre, karanfil (Syzygium aromaticum) bitki özütünün bütün bakteri türlerinde yüksek zon çapı oluşturduğu görülmüştür. Çalışmada kullanılan ve antimikrobiyal etki gösteren bitki özütlerinin kozmetik el kremlerinde koruyucu yerine kullanılabilirliği test edilmiştir. Krem formülasyonuna göre belirlenen oranlarında alınan özütler kremlere eklenmiştir. Karşılaştırma amaçlı olarak sentetik koruyucu içeren ve içermeyen kremlerden birinci ayda, üçüncü ayda ve altıncı ayda örnekler alınmıştır. Örnekler günlük kullanıma uygun olarak krem numunelerenin kapağı her gün açılıp, el yardımıyla sürülmek üzere alınıp kapatıldıktan sonra altı ay boyunca bu şekilde muhafaza edilmiştir. Alınan örneklerin kullanılan besiyerlerdeki oluşan bakteri kolonileri sayılması esasına bağlı antimikrobiyal etkinlik testleri yapılmıştır. Altıncı ayın sonunda elde edilen sonuçlara, sentetik koruyucu yerine kullanılabilecek ve antimikrobiyal etki gösteren bitki türleri; çörek otu (Nigella Sativa), tarçın (Cinnamomum), karanfil (Syzygium aromaticum) ve yasemin (Jasminum Nudiflorum) bitkilerinin olduğu görülmüştür. In this study, black cumin (Nigella Sativa), cinnamon (Cinnamomum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum), orange (Citrus Sinensis), lemon (Citrus Lemon) and jasmine (Jasminum Nudiflorum) extracts were obtained by soxhlet extraction method. Antimicrobial activities of the plant extracts were tested against the bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus pneumoniae. In antimicrobial activity studies disc diffusion method was used. According to the results obtained clove (Syzygium aromaticum) plant extract had bigger zone diameters against all bacteria. Usability of the extracts of these plants that had antimicrobial effect in cosmetic handcreams was tested. The extracts taken at ratio determined according to cream formulation was added to the cream. Samples were taken from creams with and without synthetic preservatives in the first, third and sixth months. Samples were taken from cream samples in accordance with daily use by opening the cap of the cream everyday and after manually applying them their caps were closed. They were preserved for six months like this. For the samples taken, antibacterial activity tests were made by counting the bacteria colonies formed in the broth used. The results obtained at the end of the sixth month, plant species that can be used instead of synthetic preservatives and have antimicrobial effect; black cumin(Nigella Sativa), cinnamon (Cinnamomum), cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) and jasmine (Jasminum Nudiflorum) plants were seen. 93

Certain natural dietary spices, in addition to their use in food flavoring and preservation, have the ability to detoxify or degrade a wide range of chemical carcinogens. In the present study, aqueous extracts of judiciously selected natural dietary spices were evaluated for their ability to degrade aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). A total of 9 spices including garlic (Allium sativum), ginger (Zingiber officinale), black cumin (Nigella sativum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum), sacred basil (Ocimum basilicum), lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratusL. (DC)Stapf)), thyme (Thymus schimperi), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), and lemon traditionally used by the Ethiopian Community for food flavoring and preservation were considered. Aflatoxin degradation efficacy of the spice extracts was studied through determination of the toxin in extract-treated and nontreated samples using LC-MS/MS. The degradation was characterized by electrochemical methods based on the characteristic oxidation peak of phenolic hydroxyl resulting from the degradation of the toxin after treatment with the extracts. Of the various spices, garlic showed the highest 35.8% (30 min) to 61.7% (1 hr) in spiked and 46.7% (30 min) to 68.3% (1 hr) and real-sample (contaminated maize) treatment reduction followed by lemon 34.2% (30 min) to 56.0% (1 hr) in spiked and 41.1% (30 min) to 60.6% (1 hr) in real-sample treatment at 25°C. The level of reduction was higher in real-sample treatment than that in spiked. This suggests adsorptive contribution by the matrix in addition to the chemical degradation. The current findings revealed nonobvious benefits of the use of natural dietary spices as effective solution for AFB1 degradation and decontamination of food.

Giriş: Meme kanseri, kadınlarda görülen en sık kanser olmakla birlikte kadınlarda kanser ilişkili ölümlerin de en sık nedenidir. Son dönemlerde erken tanı ve tedavi ile mortalitede azalma izlenmektedir. Kullanılan kemoterapi ilaçlarının kanser hücrelerine selektivitesi düşüktür, büyük bir kısmının ciddi sitotoksik yan etkileri mevcuttur. Meme kanserinde uzun süredir kullanılan doksorubisinin de bazı yan etkileri bulunmaktadır. Bu yan etkiler içinde, uzun dönemde kognitif fonksiyonların bozulmasıyla kendisini gösteren kemobeyine pratikte sıklıkla karşılaşılmaktadır. Deneysel çalışmalarda kemobeyin üzerine etkisi araştırılan birçok molekül bulunmaktadır. Antioksidan özelliğe sahip Nigella sativa (çörekotu)'nın birçok hastalıkta olumlu etkisinin olduğu çeşitli çalışmalarda ortaya konulmuştur. Nigella sativa'nın doksorubisine bağlı oluşan kemobeyin üzerine etkisinin araştırıldığı çalışma bulunmamaktadır.Amaç: Çalışmamızda deneysel hayvan modelinde doksorubisin ilişkili kemobeyin üzerine Nigella sativa'nın etkisinin araştırılması amaçlanmıştır.Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmada 24 adet dişi Wistar Albino cinsi rat kullanıldı. Ratlar, her grupta 8 hayvan olacak şekilde rastgele kontrol, doksorubisin ve doksorubisin+Nigella sativa gruplarına dağıtıldı. Kemobeyin indüksiyonu doksorubisin ile yapıldı. Doksorubisin, intraperitoneal olarak 5 miligram/kilogram/gün dozunda, 1. 8. ve 15. günler olmak üzere 28 gün boyunca toplamda 3 defa verildi. Nigella sativa ekstraksiyonu etanol metoduyla yapıldı. Nigella sativa özütü oral olarak gavaj ile 400 miligram/kilogram/gün dozunda 28 gün boyunca hergün verildi. Ratlar, 1. 2. 3. 4. ve 5. haftalarda haftada bir defa tartıldı. Kemobeyin şiddeti 29. günde açık alan testi, 30. ve 31. günlerde pasif sakınma testi ile değerlendirildi. Açık alan testinde toplam aldıkları mesafe, hareketli ve hareketsiz süreler ile epizot sayıları, ortalama ve maksimum hızları, geçtikleri çizgi sayısı, merkez ve kenar alana giriş sayıları, bu alanlarda geçirdikleri toplam süre ile hareketli ve hareketsiz süreler, ortalama hızları ve aldıkları mesafeler kaydedildi. Pasif sakınma testinde birinci gün karanlık odada elektrik uyarısı verildi. İkinci gün karanlık odaya geçme süresi test edildi. Karanlık odaya geçmeyenler öğrenmiş kabul edildi. Ratlarda öğrenme oranları hesaplandı. Elde edilen sonuçlar istatistiksel olarak karşılaştırıldı. Anlamlı (p) değeri ˂0,05 olarak kabul edildi. Bulgular: Doksorubisin grubunda hareketli ve hareketsiz epizot sayıları ile aktif ve inaktif epizot sayıları kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı derecede azalmış (herbiri için p˂0,05), kenar ve merkez alanlara giriş sayıları ile merkez alanda alınan mesafe kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı derecede artmıştı (herbiri için p˂0,05). Kenar alanda alınan süre kontrol grubuna göre doksorubisin grubunda daha az, merkez alanda geçirilen toplam süre ile hareketli süre daha fazla olmasına rağmen fark anlamlı değildi (herbiri için p˃0,05). Doksorubisin+Nigella sativa grubunda kenar ve merkez alanlara giriş sayıları, merkez alanda alınan mesafe, merkez alanda geçirilen toplam süre ile hareketli süre doksorubisin grubuna göre anlamlı derecede azalmış (herbiri için p˂0,05), aktif ve inaktif epizot sayıları ile kenar alanda geçirilen süre ise anlamlı derecede artmıştı (herbiri için p˂0,05). Hareketli ve hareketsiz epizot sayıları doksorubisin grubuna göre doksorubisin+Nigella sativa grubunda daha fazla olmasına rağmen aradaki fark anlamlı değildi (p˃0,05). Doksorubisin+Nigella sativa grubu ile kontrol grubu arasında hiçbir parametrede anlamlı fark yoktu (p˃0,05). Bütün gruplarda, kenar alanda geçirilen süre ve alınan mesafe, merkez alandaki süre ve mesafeye göre anlamlı derecede daha fazlaydı (p˂0,05). Bütün gruplarda merkez alandaki ortalama hız, kenar alandaki ortalama hızdan, merkez alandaki hareketli süre merkez alandaki hareketsiz süreden, toplam aktif epizot sayısı da inaktif epizot sayısından anlamlı derecede daha fazlaydı (p˂0,05). Bütün gruplarda toplam hareketli süreler ile hareketsiz süreler, kenar alandaki hareketli süreler ile hareketsiz süreler, toplam hareketli epizot sayılar ile hareketsiz epizot sayıları ve kenar alana giriş sayıları ile merkez alana giriş sayıları benzerdi (herbiri için p˃0,05). Tartışma: Doksorubisin uygulanan ratlarda anksiyete azaltmaktadır. Doksorubisinin, normal ratlarda korunma içgüdüsü gereği doğal olarak belli düzeyde olması gereken anksiyeteyi daha düşük seviyelere indirmesi, doksorubisinin anksiyeteyi düzenleyen santral mekanizmaları bozucu etki gösterdiğini düşündürmektedir. Nigella sativa, bu hasara engel olarak anksiyete seviyesini korunma için hayvanların ihtiyaç duyduğu seviyede tutmaktadır. Doksorubisin ile kısa süreli indüksiyon ile bilişsel fonksiyonlarda bozulma oluşmamıştır. Bunun olması için doksorubisin ile uzun süreli uygulanması veya daha uzun süre geçtikten sonra ratlarda bu testlerin tekrarlanması gerekiyor olabilir. Bu nedenle, Nigella sativa'nın bilişsel fonksiyonlar üzerine etkisinin değerlendirilmesi için daha uzun süreli çalışmaların yapılmasının gerekli olduğu sonucuna varıldı. Sonuç: Nigella sativa, doksorubisinin neden olduğu emosyonel davranış değişiklikleri üzerine koruyucu etkiye sahiptir. Fakat bilişsel fonksiyonlar üzerine etkisinin gösterilebilmesi için uzun dönem doksorubisin kullanıldığı ve ratların uzun süreli takip edildiği çalışmalara ihtiyaç vardır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Doksorubisin, Kemobeyin, Nigella sativa, Rat Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the most common reason of cancer related mortality in women. Recently, the decrease in the mortality has been seen along with the early diagnosis and treatment. But, most of the chemotherapeudic drugs used in the treatment of breast cancer have severe cytotoxic side effects and have low selectivity to cancer cells. Doxorubicin used in the treatment of breast cancer for a long time, has also severe side effects. In these side effects, chemo-brain is frequently encountered in clinical practice. Chemo-brain manifests itself with the impairment of cognitive functions in the long term. In experimental studies, several molecules had been investigated their effects on the chemo-brain. Favourable effects of Nigella sativa on many diseases, that has an antioxidant property, have been revealed with the various studies. There is no study showing the efficacy of Nigella sativa, with proven effects on some diseases, on the doxorubicin induced chemo-brain. Objective: In our study we planned to research the efficacy of Nigella sativa on the doxorubicin induced chemo-brain in a murine model.Material and method: The study included 24 female Wistar Albino rats, randomly divided into control group, doxorubicin group and doxorubicin+Nigella sativa group, each containing eight rats. Chemo-brain induction was performed with doxorubicin. Doxorubicin was given intraperitoneally at the dose of 5 miligram/kilogram/day at the 1. 8. and 15. days, with totally three times during 28 days. Nigella sativa extraction was performed with ethanol methods. Nigella sativa extract was given with gavage everyday at the dose of 400 miligram/kilogram/day during 28 days. The severity of chemo-brain was assessed with open-field test at 29. day in terms of anxiety and passive-avoidence test at 30. and 31. days in terms of cognitive functions. In the open-field test, total distance travelled, mobil and immobile time, mobile and immobile episodes, mean and maximum speeds, crossed lines, number of enterance into center and border zones, total, mobile and immobile time spent, mean speeds and distance travelled in center and border zones were recorded. In the passive avoidance test, electrical stimuli was given to rats in the dark chamber at the first day. Latency time to first enterance into the dark chamber were recorded at the second day. The rats that did not enter the dark chamber assumed that it has learned. The rates of learning were recorded. The weight of the rats were evaluated at 1. 2. 3. 4. and 5. weeks. Karaciğer fibrozisi, viral enfeksiyonu, alkolik karaciğer hastalığı (ALD), nonalkolik karaciğer hastalığı (NASH) de içeren herhangi bir etyolojinin kronik karaciğer hasarından kaynaklanan ekstrasellüler matriksin birikimi ile karakterize edilen dinamik bir süreçtir. Karaciğer fibrozisi, tekrarlayan yaralanmalara karşı karaciğerin yara iyileşmesi tepkisinin bir sonucudur. Bu faktörler arasında, transforme edici büyüme faktörü-β (TGF-β) ve trombosit kaynaklı büyüme faktörü (PDGF) protein ailesinin üyeleri en etkili profibrojenik medyatörlerdir. Önceki çalışmalar, timokinonun hayvan modellerinde çörek otunun karaciğer fibrozisine karşı koruyucu etkisi olabileceğini göstermiştir. Ayrıca in vitro HSC'ler üzerinden yapılan bir çalışmada timokinonun antifibrotik etkisi gösterilmiştir. Fakat çörek otu ve ürünlerini antifibrotik etkilerinin detaylı mekanizması henüz bilinmemektedir ve bu alanda çörek otu ekstraktları, timokinon ve çörek otu yağının etkilerini birlikte inceleyen hücre kültürü çalışmaları bulunmamaktadır. Biz bu çalışmada bir tür hepatik stellat hücre (HSC) tipi olan LX2 hücrelerinde çörek otu ekstraktı, timokinon ve çörek otu yağının antifibrotik etkilerini belirlemeyi amaçladık. Bu bağlamda hücre canlılık testi (MTT) ile çörek otu ve ürünlerinin HSC üzerine olan koruyucu ve toksik etkilerini belirlendi. Dört grubumuz, her grupta bir kontrol grubu (DMEM) ve beş farklı konsantrasyonda ( 500 µg/mL, 250 µg/mL, 125 µg/mL, 62.5 µg/mL, 31.25 µg/mL ) çörek otu polar ve apolar ekstraktları, TQ ve çörek otu yağı ile 24 saat maruz bırakıldı sonra MTT testi yapıldı. Sonuçlarmızda çörek otu polar ekstraktı serum free (SF) ile karşılaştırildığında 31, 62, 125, 250 µg ekstrakt hücre canlığı anlamlı bir şekilde değiştirmemiştır. 500 µg'lık konsantrasyonda hücre canlılığı % 50'den fazla düşerek anlamlı olarak göstermiştir (p

Bitki yetiştiriciliğinin ilk adımı tohumla başlar. Yetiştirme ve bakım şartları ne kadar iyi olursa olsun, kaliteli bir tohum kullanılmadığı takdirde bitkisel üretimde yüksek verime ulaşmak mümkün olmayacaktır. Tohum kaplamacılığı son yıllarda büyük önem kazanmıştır. Ülkemizde son zamanlarda küçük çaplı tohumların kaplanarak ekime hazırlanması tarım sektöründe yeni çalışma alanları oluşturmuştur. Tohum kaplamada en etkili kriterlerin arasında kaplanan tohumun çimlenme gücü, kaplama materyali ve tohuma uygulanan kaplama materyalinin oranıdır. Bu çalışmada farklı boyutlarda ve bin tane ağırlıklarına sahip olan kekik "Origanum vulgare", haşhaş "Papaver somniferum", adaçayı "Salvia officinalis", kantaron "Hypericum perforatum", kimyon "Cuminum cyminum", susam "Sesamum inducum" ve çörekotuna "Nigella sativa" ait tohumlar kaplanmıştır. Kaplama materyalinin uygulamasında ise büyük çaplı tohumlardan küçük çaplı tohumlara göre kaplama materyalinin uygulama dozu arttırılmıştır. Çıplak ve kaplı tohumlarda ISTA normları dikkate alınarak tohumların çimlenmelerine bakılmıştır. Yapılan denemeler sonucunda kimyon, kekik, haşhaş, susam, adaçayı ve çörekotu tohumlarında %100 kantaron tohumunda ise %96 oranında kaplanmıştır. Çimlenme oranı olarak; kimyon çıplak tohum %70 kaplı tohum %69.5, kekik çıplak tohum %78 kaplı tohum %78, haşhaş çıplak tohum %97.25 kaplı tohum %95.5, susam çıplak tohum %97.25 kaplı tohum 96.5, adaçayı çıplak tohum %82.5 kaplı tohum %82.25, kantaron çıplak tohum %47.25 kaplı tohum %46.75, çörekotu çıplak tohum %97.25 kaplı tohum %96.5 oranında çimlenme başarısı görülmüştür. Araştırma sonucunda kaplanan tohumlar ekim makinesi ile ekime uygun olarak kaplandıkları görülmüştür. Araştırmada kullanılan kaplama materyali ise tohumların çimlenmesinde engelleyici bir faktör olmadığı görülmüştür., The first step of plant breeding starts with seed. No matter how good breeding and maintenance conditions are, it will not be possible to achieve high yield in plant production unless quality seed is used. Seed coating has gained high importance in recent years. One of the most effective criteria for seed coating is the germination power of the coated seed, the coating material and the amount of coating material applied to the seed. In this study, seeds of oregano "Origanum vulgare", poppy "Papaver somniferum", sage "Salvia officinalis", centaury "Hypericum perforatum", cumin "Cuminum cyminum", sesame "Sesamum inducum" and black seed "Nigella sativa" which have different sizes and thousand grain weights were covered. In the application of the coating material, the application dose of the coating material was increased of the large caliber seeds, compared to the small caliber seeds. Germinations of naked and coated seeds were observed by taking ISTA norms into consideration. As a result of the research, cumin, oregano, poppy, sesame, sage and black seed coated 100%, centaury seed were coated 96%. Germination rates are; cumin naked seed 70%, coated seed 69.5%, thyme naked seed 78%, coated seed 78%, poppy naked seed 97.25%, coated seed 95.5%, sesame naked seed 97.25%, coated seed 96.5%, sage 82.5% of the naked seed 82.5%, coated seed, centaury naked seed 47.25%, coated seed 46.75%, black seed naked seed 97.25%, coated seed germination success rate was 96.5%. As a result of the research, it is observed that seeds coated were coated suitable for sowing machine. The coating material used in the research was not a disincentive in germination of seeds.
