In immediate fire deaths, pulmonary injury may be the main source of mortality, being important to document the histologic findings for the purpose of excluding other modes of death, such as from asphyxia with no gross findings. In this context, a group of morphologic determinants have been targeted with useful makers of pulmonary injury. To facilitate the determination of whether an individual was deceased before the start of a fire and validate the importance of parenchymal alterations in pulmonary injury in fire deaths, we studied lungs in victims of fire (N = 28) and suffocation (N = 40), creating a mathematical model using cluster analysis. For this purpose, a semiquantitative analysis of the distal parenchyma was performed to evaluate the amount of bronchiolar dilatation, overinsufflation (ductal and alveolar), collapse (ductal and alveolar), passive congestion, alveolar edema, and hemorrhage (interstitial and alveolar). These 7 histologic determinants were useful to discriminate fire (bronchiolar dilatation, ductal overinsuflation, alveolar overinsuflation, alveolar hemorrhage) from suffocation lung injuries (alveolar collapse, congestion, and edema). We conclude that these determinants should be included in the routine of forensic pathology.

Background: Interstitial lung disease is a well-recognized prognostic factor in systemic sclerosis (SSc). As the prognosis in nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) has been described to be better in collagen vascular disorders compared to the idiopathic forms, we hypothesize that the mechanisms of repair and remodeling are different between these 2 forms of the disease. Objectives: To compare the mechanisms of repair and remodeling between SSc-associated NSIP and the idiopathic form, its impact on pulmonary function tests and survival rates. Methods: We analyzed 18 biopsies from patients with NSIP associated with SSc and 22 with idiopathic NSIP and compared the epithelial and vascular densities as well as vascular activity. Results: Epithelial cell density was lower in SSc-NSIP when compared with idiopathic NSIP (p < 0.0001). Type II pneumocytes and Clara cells were reduced in idiopathic NSIP (p = 0.02). A decrease in microvessel density was found in SSc-NSIP compared to idiopathic NSIP (p < 0.0001). The vascular activity measured by VCAM expression was higher in NSIP-SSc when compared to the idiopathic group (p < 0.0001). The DLCO/VA in SSc-NSIP was more compromised. A direct association between vascular density and DLCO/VA was found (p = 0.02). There was no difference in the survival rate between the 2 groups after a follow-up of 36 months. Conclusions: Alterations in the epithelium and vasculature seem to differ in the pathogenesis of SSc-NSIP when compared to the idiopathic form of the disease. Further studies may be required to assess the significance of these findings and explore if they can provide prognostic and/or treatment information.

The aim was to examine extracellular matrix repair and remodelling in 12 cases of idiopathic OP and compare these with 11 cases of secondary OP. Malignancy of pulmonary large cell carcinomas (LCC) increases from classic LCC through LCC with neuroendocrine morphology (LCCNM) to large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC). However, the histological classification has sometimes proved to be difficult. Because the malignancy of LCC is highly dependent on proteins with functions in the cell cycle, DNA repair, and apoptosis, p53 has been targeted as a potentially useful biological marker. p53 mutations in lung cancers have been shown to result in expression and protein expression also occurs in the absence of mutations. To validate the importance of both p53 protein expression (by immunostaining) and p53 gene mutations in lung LCC (by PCR-single strand conformational polymorphism analysis of exons 5, 6, 7, and 8) and to study their relationships with clinical factors and sub-classification we investigated the correlation of p53 abnormalities in 15 patients with LCC (5 classic LCC, 5 LCNEC, and 5 LCCNM) who had undergone resection with curative intent. Of these patients, 5/15 expressed p53 and none had mutant p53 sequences. There was a negative survival correlation with positive p53 immunostaining (P = 0.05). After adjustment for stage, age, gender, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and histological subtypes by multivariate analysis, p53 expression had an independent impact on survival. The present study indicates that p53 assessment may provide an objective marker for the prognosis of LCC irrespective of morphological variants and suggests that p53 expression is important for outcome prediction in patients with the early stages of LCC. The results reported here should be considered to be initial results because tumors from only 15 patients were studied: 5 each from LCC, LCNEC and LCCNM. This was due to the rarity of these specific diseases.

Recently, we discovered that New Zealand rabbits immunized with human type V collagen plus Freund's adjuvant present fibrosis and vasculitis of organs usually affected by systemic sclerosis. In this way, we studied the fibrillogenesis process to identify possible factors involved in altered remodeling observed in this scleroderma-like model. Additionally, we have done a very preliminary comparison with human skins obtained from scleroderma patients (n=3). Female New Zealand rabbits (n=10) were immunized subcutaneously with two doses of 1 mg collagen V (COL V) plus complete Freund's adjuvant for a 30-day interval, followed by two additional intramuscular booster immunizations in incomplete Freund's adjuvant for a 15-day interval. Animals from control group (n=10), were only inoculated with complete and incomplete Freund's adjuvant given at same conditions of COL V. Histological analysis of skins from animals and patients were done by Masson's trichrome staining, and immunofluorescence method to detect collagen fibers and interactions of types I, III and V collagen in the remodeling process. The analysis of animal skins showed collagen fibril deposits in the dermis after 7 days of sensibilization and an increase in these deposits after 75 and 120 days, respectively. Skin thickness and atrophy of sebaceous and sweat glands were progressively more intense in late sacrificed animals and correlated with increased amount of collagen deposition. Surprisingly, type V collagen was overexpressed both in animals and patients, forming dense and atypical collagen fibers in the dermis. We suggest that this anomalous expression of morphologically different type V collagen could justify the remodeling observed in scleroderma plaque.

Aims : Structural remodelling in acute and chronic idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) has been extensively investigated, but little attention has been directed to the elastic tissue in these situations. The aim of this study was to determine whether elastic deposition accompanies collagen deposition in the four major histological patterns of IIP: diffuse alveolar damage (DAD), organizing pneumonia (OP), non-specific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) and usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP). Methods and results : We measured, by image analysis, the content of fibres of the collagenous and elastic systems of the alveolar septum in histological slides of open lung biopsies, using the picrosirius-polarization method and Weigert's resorcin–fuchsin stain, respectively. Five groups were studied: 10 cases of DAD; nine cases of OP; nine cases of NSIP; and 10 cases of UIP. Four normal lungs were used for comparison. The content of collagen fibres was significantly higher in UIP when compared to DAD, NSIP, OP and normal lung. The content of elastic fibres was increased in comparison with normal lungs but this was not significantly different among the histological patterns. Conclusion : Acute and chronic IIP cause a similar increase in the collagen and elastic contents of the lungs, representing a process of ‘fibroelastosis’ rather than an exclusive process of fibrosis. A profibrogenic mechanism is responsible for the unparallelled collagen augmentation observed in UIP subjects, the nature of which is yet to be determined.

Background: We recently reported that co-occurring genetic events constitute major determinants of the molecular diversity of KRAS-mutant lung adenocarcinoma (LUAC) (Skoulidis et al., Cancer Discovery, 2015). However, comprehensive evaluation of the functional impact of KRAS co-mutations on key cancer hallmarks is thus far lacking. Here, we find that inactivating mutations in NLRC5, a major transactivator of MHC class I molecules, are significantly enriched in KRAS-mutant LUAC and examine the impact of NLRC5 loss on the composition of the tumor immune microenvironment. Methods: Our cohorts consist of 513 LUACs from the TCGA (145 KRAS-mutant), 152 chemotherapy-naïve surgically resected LUAC from the PROSPECT cohort, 20 platinum-refractory KRAS-mutant LUAC from the BATTLE-2 clinical trial, as well as a panel of 31 KRAS-mutant NSCLC cell lines. Analysis of immune cell sub-population was performed using automated IF-based enumeration. Antigen presentation score was defined as the geometric mean mRNA expression of HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C and β2M. Results: In an unbiased analysis for genes significantly co-mutated with KRAS in LUAC (TCGA cohort) we identified NLRC5 (NLR family, CARD domain containing 5), encoding a recently discovered major transactivator of MHC class I genes (~11% of KRAS-mutant LUAC, odds ratio 2.99, P=0.0197).The spectrum of NLRC5 somatic mutations includes several nonsense and frameshift mutations, as well as missense mutations, many of which are predicted to abrogate normal NLRC5 function. In the TCGA cohort, KRAS/NLRC5 co-mutated tumors exhibited lower antigen presentation score compared to KRAS-mutant NLRC5 wild-type tumors (P=0.0369, t-test). Among KRAS-mutant LUAC from the TCGA, PROSPECT, BATTLE-2 cohorts expression of NLRC5 mRNA correlated tightly with the expression of core antigen presentation pathway components including HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C, β2M, TAP1, TAP2, PSMB8 and PSMB9 [in BATTLE-2: HLA-A r=0.7616, P=9.572e-05, HLA-B r=0.834, P=4.884e-06, HLA-C r=0.8029, P=2.036e-05, TAP1 r=0.8189, P=1.009e-05 ]. Similar results were obtained in a panel of 31 KRAS-mutant NSCLC cell line. Thus, both mutational and non-mutational mechanisms can account for NLRC5 inactivation. Finally, in a tumor microarray encompassing surgically resected, chemotherapy naïve LUAC (PROSPECT), NLRC5-low tumors (lower tertile for NLRC5 mRNA expression, N=34), exhibited reduced density of infiltrating CD3+ (P Conclusions: Co-mutations in NLRC5, are enriched in KRAS-mutant LUAC and are associated with immune exclusion. Background: OX-40 expression on tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes correlates with better survival in several human cancers, suggesting that OX-40 signals may play a critical role in establishing an antitumor immune response. To better understand the prognostic role of OX-40 expression on the tumor immune infiltrate in non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), we have profiled 100 surgically resected tumor specimens from patients with stage I-III NSCLC with known clinico-pathological characteristics using a panel of several markers of immune suppression and activation by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and correlated them with survival outcomes and gene expression profiles. Methods: 100 formalin fixed paraffin embedded NSCLC specimens (61 adenocarcinoma, 31 squamous cell carcinoma) were stained by IHC using an automated stainer with a panel of antibodies targeting the following immune markers: OX-40, PD-L1, PD-1, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD45RO, CD57, CD68, FOXP3, Granzyme B, ICOS. PD-L1 expression was evaluated in the tumor cells using H-score (range 0-300) taking into consideration the percentage of positive cells showing membrane staining pattern (0 to 100) and intensity of the staining (0 to 3+). The remaining markers were evaluated as density of cells, defined as the number of positive cells per area regardless of the intensity. The final score for each marker was expressed as the average score of the five areas analyzed within the tumor region. mRNA expression was determined in the tumors by Illumina microarray and correlated with the IHC score by Spearman correlation test. Results: OX-40 IHC expression was localized in the membrane of the tumor immune infiltrate (median value 271, range 56 to 1246). No statistical correlation was observed in tumor immune infiltrate with high versus low OX-40 IHC expression (by median value) and gender, age, race, smoking status, stage, EGFR and KRAS-mutation status. In contrast, high OX-40 expression levels in the tumor immune infiltrate correlated with better overall survival (OS) by IHC median score (p = 0.002) and by quartile distribution analysis (p = 0.001). This statistical association was maintained in the squamous cell carcinoma subgroup by median value (p = 0.04) and quartile distribution (p = 0.001). To understand the prognostic role of the OX-40 expression in relationship with the CD3+/CD8+ immune infiltrate, we analyzed the prognostic significance of CD3+/CD8+ with or without OX-40 positivity. The patients whose tumors showed high levels of CD3, CD8 and OX-40 IHC staining in the tumor immune infiltrate had a statistically significant better OS than the counterpart with high CD3+/CD8+ but low OX-40 expression (p = 0.007). OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of COX-1 and COX-2 in the remodeled lung in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients, correlating that expression with patient survival.METHODS: We examined open lung biopsy specimens from 24 SSc patients and 30 IPF patients, using normal lung tissue as a control. The histological patterns included fibrotic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) in SSc patients and usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) in IPF patients. We used immunohistochemistry and histomorphometry to evaluate the expression of COX-1 and COX-2 in alveolar septa, vessels, and bronchioles. We then correlated that expression with pulmonary function test results and evaluated its impact on patient survival.RESULTS: The expression of COX-1 and COX-2 in alveolar septa was significantly higher in IPF-UIP and SSc-NSIP lung tissue than in the control tissue. No difference was found between IPF-UIP and SSc-NSIP tissue regarding COX-1 and COX-2 expression. Multivariate analysis based on the Cox regression model showed that the factors associated with a low risk of death were younger age, high DLCO/alveolar volume, IPF, and high COX-1 expression in alveolar septa, whereas those associated with a high risk of death were advanced age, low DLCO/alveolar volume, SSc (with NSIP), and low COX-1 expression in alveolar septa.CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that strategies aimed at preventing low COX-1 synthesis will have a greater impact on SSc, whereas those aimed at preventing high COX-2 synthesis will have a greater impact on IPF. However, prospective randomized clinical trials are needed in order to confirm that.

We have made major advances in the treatment of melanoma through the use of targeted therapy and immune checkpoint blockade; however, clinicians are posed with therapeutic dilemmas regarding timing and sequence of therapy. There is a growing appreciation of the impact of antitumor immune responses to these therapies, and we performed studies to test the hypothesis that clinical patterns and immune infiltrates differ at progression on these treatments. We observed rapid clinical progression kinetics in patients on targeted therapy compared to immune checkpoint blockade. To gain insight into possible immune mechanisms behind these differences, we performed deep immune profiling in tumors of patients on therapy. We demonstrated low CD8+ T-cell infiltrate on targeted therapy and high CD8+ T-cell infiltrate on immune checkpoint blockade at clinical progression. These data have important implications, and suggest that antitumor immune responses should be assessed when considering therapeutic options for patients with melanoma.

The aim of this study was to evaluate extracellular matrix components in articular cartilage, ligaments and synovia in an experimental model of diabetes. Young Wistar rats were divided into a streptozotocin-induced (STZ; 35 mg/kg) diabetic group (DG; n=15) and a control group (CG; n=15). Weight, blood glucose and plasma anti-carboxymethyllysine were measured 70 days after STZ infusions. Knee joints, patellar ligaments, and lateral and medial collateral ligaments were isolated and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Picrosirius. The total collagen content was determined by morphometry. Immunofluorescence was employed to evaluate types I, III, and V collagen in ligaments and synovial tissues and types II and XI collagen in cartilage.Higher blood glucose levels and plasma anti-carboxymethyllysine were observed in DG rats when compared to those in CG rats. The final weight was significantly lower in the DG rats than in the CG rats. Histomorphometric evaluation depicted a small quantity of collagen fibers in ligaments and articular cartilage in DG rats, as well as increased collagen in synovial tissue. There was a decrease in cartilage proteoglycans in DG rats when compared with CG rats. Immunofluorescence staining revealed an increase of collagen III and V in ligaments, collagen XI in cartilage, and collagen I in synovial tissue of DG rats compared with CG rats.The ligaments, cartilage and synovia are highly affected following STZ-induced diabetes in rats, due the remodeling of collagen types in these tissues. This process may promote the degradation of the extracellular matrix, thus compromising joint function. Our data may help to better understand the pathogenesis of joint involvement related to diabetes.

FUNDAMENTO: A sobrecarga ventricular direita aguda está associada a situações clínicas de elevada morbimortalidade, tais como: ressecções pulmonares extensas, tromboembolismo pulmonar, transplante pulmonar e edema pulmonar das altitudes. Alguns pontos de sua fisiopatologia permanecem obscuros. OBJETIVO: Avaliar os efeitos hemodinâmicos da sobrecarga ventricular direita aguda experimental em suínos. MÉTODOS: A sobrecarga ventricular direita foi induzida pela oclusão das artérias pulmonares através de ligaduras. Vinte porcos foram utilizados no estudo, sendo alocados em 04 grupos: um controle, não submetido à oclusão vascular pulmonar, e três de sobrecarga ventricular direita submetidos à oclusão das seguintes artérias pulmonares: SVD1 (artéria pulmonar esquerda); SVD2 (artéria pulmonar esquerda e do lobo inferior direito) e SVD3 (artéria pulmonar esquerda, do lobo inferior direito e do lobo mediastinal), obstruindo a vasculatura pulmonar em 42, 76 e 82,0% respectivamente. Variáveis de hemodinâmica foram medidas a cada 15 minutos durante a uma hora do estudo. Na análise estatística, foram utilizados ajustes de modelos lineares mistos com estrutura de variâncias e covariâncias. RESULTADOS: Nas comparações intergrupais, houve aumento significativo da frequência cardíaca (p = 0,004), pressão arterial pulmonar média (p = 0,001) e pressão capilar pulmonar (p < 0,0001). Houve redução significativa da pressão arterial média (p = 0,01) e do índice sistólico (p = 0,002). Não houve diferença significativa no índice cardíaco (p = 0,94). CONCLUSÃO: Apesar da intensa sobrecarga ventricular direita promovida pela obstrução de 82,0% da vasculatura pulmonar e pelo aumento significativo da pressão arterial pulmonar não houve disfunção cardiovascular severa e/ou choque circulatório no período estudado. BACKGROUND: Acute right ventricular overload is associated with high morbidity and mortality clinical situations such as: extensive lung resection, pulmonary thromboembolism, lung transplantation and high altitude pulmonary edema. Some points of its pathophysiology remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the hemodynamic effects of experimental acute right ventricular overload in pigs. METHODS: Right ventricular overload was induced through the occlusion of the pulmonary arteries using ligationss. Twenty pigs were used in the study, divided into 04 groups: one control group not subject to pulmonary vascular occlusion, and three right ventricular overload groups subject to occlusion of the following pulmonary arteries: SVD1 (left pulmonary artery); SVD2 (left pulmonary artery and right lower lobe) and SVD3 (left pulmonary artery, right lower lobe and mediastinal lobe), obstructing the pulmonary vasculature in 42, 76 and 82.0% respectively. Hemodynamic variables were measured every 15 minutes during one hour of study. The statistical analysis employed mixed linear models with variance and covariance structures. RESULTS: Group comparisons revealed significant increases in heart rate (p = 0.004), mean pulmonary artery pressure (p = 0.001) and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (p < 0.0001). There was no significant difference in cardiac index (p = 0.94). CONCLUSION: Despite the severe right ventricular overload promoted by 82.0% obstruction of the pulmonary vasculature and the significant increase in pulmonary arterial pressure, there was no severe cardiovascular dysfunction and/or circulatory shock during the study period. Veinte cerdos fueron utilizados en el estudio, siendo divididos en 4 grupos: uno control, no sometido a la oclusión vascular pulmonar, y tres de sobrecarga ventricular derecha sometidos a la oclusión de las siguientes arterias pulmonares: SVD1 (arteria pulmonar izquierda); SVD2 (arteria pulmonar izquierda y del lóbulo inferior derecho) y SVD3 (arteria pulmonar izquierda, del lóbulo inferior derecho y del lóbulo mediastinal), obstruyendo la vasculatura pulmonar en 42, 76 y 82,0% respectivamente. Variables de hemodinámica fueron medidas cada 15 minutos durante una hora del estudio. En el análisis estadístico, fueron utilizados ajustes de modelos lineares mixtos con estructura de variancias y covariancias. RESULTADOS:En las comparaciones intergrupales, hubo aumento significativo de la frecuencia cardíaca (p = 0,004), presión arterial pulmonar media (p = 0,001) y presión capilar pulmonar (p < 0,0001). Hubo reducción significativa de la presión arterial media (p = 0,01) y del índice sistólico (p = 0,002). No hubo diferencia significativa en el índice cardíaco (p = 0,94). CONCLUSIÓN:A pesar de la intensa sobrecarga ventricular derecha promovida por la obstrucción de 82,0% de la vasculatura pulmonar y por el aumento significativo de la presión arterial pulmonar no hubo disfunción cardiovascular severa y/o shock circulatorio en el período estudiado.

Background Ultra High Dilutions (UHD) are diluted beyond the Avogadro limit with dynamization (dilution with succussion). The process of anuran amphibian metamorphosis is controlled by thyroid hormones, including the resorption of the tadpole tail. Methods A randomized and blinded study was performed to investigate the influence of triiodothyronine (T3) 5 · 10−24 M (10cH) on apoptosis induced by T3 100 nM in Rana catesbeiana tadpoles’ tail tips, in vitro. Explants were randomized to three groups: control: no T3 in pharmacological or UHD dose; test: T3 100 nM and challenged with T3 10cH (UHD); positive control: T3 100 nM, treated with unsuccussed ethanol. The apoptotic index and the area of explants of test and control groups at the first and final day of the experiment were compared by t-test. Materials and methods Remodelling of the pulmonary interstitium was evaluated based on the clinical data and open lung biopsies from 15 patients with SSc. Normal lung tissues obtained from eight individuals who died of traumatic injuries were used as control group. Immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, morphometry, tri-dimensional reconstruction and a real-time polymerase chain reaction were used to evaluate the quantity, structure and molecular chains of collagen V. INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Systemic sclerosis, or scleroderma, is a rheumatic disease characterized by autoimmunity, vasculopathy, and fibrosis of the skin and several internal organs. In the present study, our aim was to assess the skin alterations in animals with scleroderma during the first stages of disease induction. METHODS: To induce scleroderma, female New Zealand rabbits (n = 12) were subcutaneously immunized with 1 mg/ml of collagen V (Col V) in complete Freund's adjuvant, twice with a thirty-day interval. Fifteen days later, the animals received an intramuscular booster with type V collagen in incomplete Freund's adjuvant, twice with a fifteen-day interval. The control group was inoculated with 1 ml of 10 mM acetic acid solution diluted with an equal amount of Freund's adjuvant. Serial dorsal skin biopsies were performed at 7, 15, and 30 days and stained with H&E, Masson's trichrome and Picrosirius for morphological and morphometric analyses. RESULTS: Immunized rabbits presented a significant increase in collagen in skin collected seven days after the first immunization (p=0.05). CONCLUSION: The results from this experimental model may be very important to a better understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms involved in the beginning of human SSc. Therapeutic protocols to avoid early remodeling of the skin may lead to promising treatments for SSc in the future.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is a common cause of adult flat foot deformity, and its etiology is unknown. PURPOSE: In this study, we characterized the morphologic pattern and distribution of types I, III and V collagen in posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. METHOD: Tendon samples from patients with and without posterior tibial tendon dysfunction were stained by immunofluorescence using antibodies against types I, III and V collagen. RESULTS: Control samples showed that type V deposited near the vessels only, while surgically obtained specimens displayed type V collagen surrounding other types of collagen fibers in thicker adventitial layers. Type III collagen levels were also increased in pathological specimens. On the other hand, amounts of collagen type I, which represents 95% of the total collagen amount in normal tendon, were decreased in pathological specimens. CONCLUSION: Fibrillogenesis in posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is altered due to higher expression of types III and V collagen and a decreased amount of collagen type I, which renders the originating fibrils structurally less resistant to mechanical forces.

Background: Vascular remodelling has recently been shown to be a promising pathogenetic indicator in idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (IIPs). Aim: To validate the importance of the collagen/elastic system in vascular remodelling and to study the relationships between the collagen/elastic system, survival and the major histological patterns of IIPs. Methods: Collagen/elastic system fibres were studied in 25 patients with acute interstitial pneumonia/diffuse alveolar damage, 22 with non-specific interstitial pneumonia/non-specific interstitial pneumonia and 55 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis/usual interstitial pneumonia. The Picrosirius polarisation method and Weigert’s resorcin–fuchsin histochemistry and morphometric analysis were used to evaluate the amount of vascular collagen/elastic system fibres and their association with the histological pattern of IIPs. The association between vascular remodelling and the degree of parenchymal fibrosis in usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) was also considered. Results: The vascular measurement of collagen/elastic fibres was significantly higher in UIP than in the lungs of controls, and in those with diffuse alveolar damage and those with non-specific interstitial pneumonia. In addition, the increment of collagen/elastic fibres in UIP varied according to the degree and activity of the parenchymal fibrosis. The most important predictors of survival in UIP were vascular remodelling classification and vascular collagen deposition. Conclusion: A progressive vascular fibroelastosis occurs in IIP histological patterns, probably indicating evolutionarily adapted responses to parenchymal injury. The vascular remodelling classification and the increase in vascular collagen were related to survival in IIP and possibly play a role in its pathogenesis. Further studies are needed to determine whether this relationship is causal or consequential.

BACKGROUND: Ascorbic acid has shown promise in attenuation of intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. The aim of this study was to determine the protective effects of ascorbic acid on intestinal morphology during IR injury in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined morphological changes in the small intestine of Wistar rats after (i) 40 minutes of ischemia (I), (ii) ischemia followed by 30 min of reperfusion (IR), (iii) ischemia with ascorbic acid (IA), (iv) ischemia followed by reperfusion and ascorbic acid (IRA) and (v) in a sham group (S). We used morphometry to evaluate the amount of villous architecture, crypts, necrosis, hemorrhagic infarcts and inflammatory cells at the mesenteric and antimesenteric borders of the small intestine.
