Tezde, feminist bilimin, iktisat disiplini içerisinde yer alan kadın istihdamına yansımaları ele alınmaktadır. Ataerkil zihniyetde bu bağlamda incelenmektedir. Tez, kadın istihdamının yanı sıra, eğitimin kadın istihdamındaki önemi hakkında da bilgi vermektedir.Tezin amacı, feminist iktisadın eleştirdiği ataerkil zihniyetin kadın istihdamına dair görüşlerini ve eğitimin kadın istihdamındaki önemini incelemektir. Bu amaçla, Zonguldak ili özelinde bir anket çalışması yapılmış; hem kadın hem de erkeklere ataerkil zihniyete dair görüşleri ve eğitimin kadın istihdamındaki rolü hakkında sorular yöneltilmiştir. Anket konuları Zonguldak ili özelinde kadın ve erkek olarak toplumda yer alan iki gruba yöneltilmektedir. Sadece kadınları kapsayan erkekleri dışlayan bir çalışma olmamaktadır. Bu yönüyle feminist iktisat çalışmalarına uygun olmaktadır. Farklı demografik özelliklere sahip kadın ve erkeklerin görüşlerinden yararlanarak bir neticeye varılmaya çalışılmaktadır. Ankete katılan farklı demografik özelliklere sahip 522 kişinin görüşlerinin istatistiksel testler ile değerlendirilmesi sonucunda, bu kişilerin kadın istihdamına ilişkin ataerkil zihniyeti yansıtan konulara katılmadığına ve eğitimin, kadının işgücüne katılmasında önemli bir faktör olduğuna ulaşılmaktadır. The thesis focuses on the reflections of feminist science on women employment that take place in the discipline of economics. Patriarchal mentality is also examined in this context. The thesis gives information not only on women employment, but also the importance of education on women employment as well.The purpose of the thesis is to examine the views of patriarchal mentality on women employment that have been criticized by feminist economics and the importance of education on female employment. For this purpose, a survey had been conducted in the Zonguldak province where both women and men are asked about their views on patriarchal mentality and the importance of education on female employment. Survey subjects are directed to two groups in Zonguldak province as women and men. There is no study that excludes men who only cover women. This is in line with feminist economics studies. Trying to reach a conclusion by taking advantage of the views of men and women with different demographic characteristics. The evaluation of the views of 522 people surveyed who have different demographic characteristics using statistical tests show that those people disagree with the issues that reflect patriarchal mentality and education appears to be one of the most important factors for female labor force participation. 170

Bu çalışmada 1997 yılında Türkiye'de gerçekleştirilen Zorunlu Eğitim Reformu'nun kadının ailedeki statüsüne olan etkilerini inceledik. Reformla zorunlu eğitimin süresi 5 yıldan 8 yıla çıkarıldı. 1987 ve sonrasında doğan bireyler politikadan etkilenirken önceki kuşaklar 5 yıl sonunda okulu bırakma hakkına sahipti. Bu çerçeve Regression Discontinuity (RD) Tasarımı kullanmak ve politikanın kadınların aile içinde güçlendirilmesi ve statüsü ile ilgili nedensel etkilerini incelemek açısından uygundur. TNSA 2013 verilerini kullanarak önce politikanın kadınların eğitimleri üzerinde artışa yol açan anlamlı etkilerini gösterdik. Sonra politikanın bazı durumlar için kadınların cinsiyet eşitliğine dair yaklaşımlarını güçlendirdiğini ve ideal evlenme yaşını artırdığını gördük. Politikanın, kadınların küçük çocukları olduğunda çalışmayı savunmalarına yol açtığını güçlü delillerle ortaya koyduk. Ayrıca, politikanın kadınların eşleri/partnerleri tarafından para ile ilgili kontrol edici davranışa maruz kalma sıklığını azalttığını ve harcayacak paraları olma durumunu arttırdığını gösterdik. Fakat politikanın kadınların mal sahibi olması ve hane içindeki iş bölümü üzerindeki etkilerine rastlayamadık. Genel olarak, sonuçlar kadının aile içindeki statüsünün önemli değişimlere uğramadığına işaret etse de politikanın kadınların maddi özgürlüklerini ve bu konudaki bilinçlerini arttığından söz edilebilir. In this study we investigate the impacts of 1997 Compulsory Education Reform in Turkey on women's status in the family. With the reform, the duration of compulsory schooling was extended to 8 years from 5 years. Individuals born in 1987 and after were affected by the policy while previous birth cohorts were not. This setting is suitable to implement a Regression Discontinuity (RD) Design and we can infer the causal effects of the policy on women's empowerment and status in the family. Employing data from TDHS 2013, we first document a significant increase in the mean years of schooling of women. Then, we show that the policy leads women to change their views on certain gender roles and increase their ideal age of marriage. There is a strong evidence that policy leads women to support working when they have little children. Moreover, policy decreases the frequency of controlling actions faced by women about money and increases the rate of women who have money to spend. However, there is no evidence of policy effect on asset holdings and share of household responsibilities. Although the results do not indicate substantial changes in women's status in the family, they suggest that the policy leads women to improve their financial independence and awareness of the benefits of paid work. 86

Daha çok anı türünde eser veren Münevver Ayaşlı, 1968-1969 yıllarında tefrika edilmiş nehir romanını Pertev Bey'in Üç Kızı adı altında toplamış, 1987'de de okuyucuların karşısına Vaniköyü'nde Fazıl Paşa Yalısı romanı ile çıkmıştır. Boğaziçi ve Türk Edebiyatı dergilerinde 1985 ve 1986 yıllarında tefrika edilen iki de öyküsü bulunan yazar, bu eserlerini oluştururken anılarından ve gözlemlerinden fazlasıyla yararlanmıştır.Sağ siyasî duruşu ile dikkati çeken Münevver Ayaşlı'nın roman ve öykülerinde, Cumhuriyet'le birlikte gözden düşmüş bir çevrenin, Boğaziçi çevresinde kümelenmiş Osmanlı aristokrasisinin geçmiş, parlak günlerine özlem ve bu düşüşten sorumlu tuttuğu Ankara ve genç Cumhuriyet'e yönelik sitemli ve beğenmeyen bir tavır hâkimdir. `Boğaziçi Medeniyeti` olarak adlandırılan ve buradaki konak/yalı/köşklerde sürdürülen Batılı ve seçkin yaşam tarzının I. Yazar, sosyal yaşama uyum sağlayamayan kadınlar, ahlâksız bir yaşam tarzına yönelenler, zararlı ideolojilerin peşinde ailelerini ve millî kimliklerini reddedenler ile bu kimselerin aldıkları eğitim ve bu eğitimin içeriği arasında ilişki kurmuş ve karşılaşılan olumsuzlukların altındaki nedenleri aramıştır. Eğitim içeriklerini ele alırken dinî ve millî eğitimin önemi üzerinde özellikle durmuştur.Münevver Ayaşlı, öykü ve romanlarında bir yandan Osmanlı yaşamının aile içerisinde sürdürülmesi taraftarı olmuş, bir yandan da laik düzenlemeleri nedeniyle Cumhuriyet kadrolarına yönelik eleştirilerini dile getirmiştir. Daha çok kendi sınıfının sözcüsü konumundaki yazar, anı ve yorumlarıyla desteklediği kurmaca eserlerinde unutulmaya yüz tutmuş bazı değerleri anımsatma ve yaşatma yoluna giderken eğitim konusundaki görüşlerini de dile getirmiştir. She, who also had two stories serialized in various monthy reviews in 1985 and 1986, made good use of her memoirs and observations while writing her fictions.Münevver Ayaşlı, who was a popular name of right-wing politics, had a nostalgia for the glorious history of Ottoman aristocracy living in Boğaziçi, which fell from grace with the foundation of Republic and she also had a reproachful and captious attitude of Ankara and young Republic, which were responsible for the downfall. The ending of `Boğaziçi Civilization`, the Western and elite lifestyle that was seen in `konak` (mansion), `yalı` (seaside mansion) and `köşk` (wooden villa), within the process begun with World War I, is the topic of her both novels.Münevver Ayaşlı had her education as `konak eğitimi`, a private tuition giving by foreigner governesses in mansions, and also her education got supported by the private foreign schools she attended. She got her fictional women, who had a resembling education with herself, came face to face with poverty, war circumstances, different social classes and the political and social wilderness of new Turkey alone and she told her women's struggle in life. Her both novels has women of all ages, who lost her fathers and/or husbands early, trying to find their places in the changing society. Ayaşlı prefered women of Boğaziçi as the center of her novels, but women from other social classes also features in her fictions. The author mentions the superior and inferior sides of the other social classes' women to the Boğaziçi women, while comparing them to each other. She usually used her characters from other classes to compare them to women of Boğaziçi.Ayaşlı gives the education of her all female characters of all classes in her fictions, some were given detailed and some were slightly mentioned. The author directly associated women's success and failures in social life to the education they had. She also associated women who couldn't harmonize to the social life, the ones who engaged in prostitution, the ones who denied their family and national identity because of the insidious ideologies they believed to the contents of the education they had and she seeked for the reasons of the complications her women run across. She especially emphasizes the importance of religious and natianol education while considering the contents of various education systems. Münevver Ayaşlı requires to sustain the Ottoman lifestyle within the family in her novels and stories while critisizing the secular reforms of the Republic. Türk tarihi içerisinde kadının sosyal ve siyasal konumu zaman içerisinde keskin değişmeler göstermiştir. Yaşanan din değişmeleri, farklı coğrafyaların kültürleri ile temaslar, bu değişmelerin ana sebepleri olmuştur. Bunun yanında Türk kadınının sahip olduğu haklar da her dönem aynı olmamıştır. Nitekim insanın en doğal haklarından birisi olan eğitim ve öğretim hakkı, Türk kadınlarının en büyük sorunlarından birisini oluşturmuştur.Bu çalışmada 1917-1953 yılları arasında Azerbaycan Türk kadınının eğitim durumu ele alınmıştır. Türk kadını, Türk dünyasının diğer coğrafyalarında olduğu gibi Azerbaycan'da da klasik eğitim metodu dediğimiz mektep ve medreselerde yeteri kadar kendine yer bulamamıştır. Fakat özellikle XIX. ve XX. YY'a gelindiği vakit bir taraftan Ceditci faaliyetlerin etkisiyle, diğer taraftan da Azerbaycan'da oluşan bilinçli aydın kesiminin çalışmalarıyla, kadınların eğitim durumları tartışılır hale gelmiştir. Aynı zamanda kadınlar için okullar açılırken, dergi ve gazetelerde de kadınlar kendilerine yer bulmaya başlamıştır. Bir taraftan da Çarlık tarafından açılan kız okullarında maddi durumu iyi olan ailelerin çocukları eğitim görmüştür. Fakat Ruslar tarafından açılan okullarda Çarlık insanı yaratma amacının olduğu da bir gerçektir. 1918-1920 yılları arasında kurulan Azerbaycan Milli Cumhuriyeti'nde de kadınların eğitimi başta gelen konulardan olmuş ve bu yönde çalışmalar yapılmıştır.Azerbaycan'da Sovyet hâkimiyetinin kurulmasından sonra kadınların eğitim süreci farklı bir yol izlemiştir. Çünkü Sovyet ideolojisinin yerleşmesi için eğitim, en etkin araç olarak kullanılmıştır. Bu sebeple zorunlu eğitim getirilmiş, kadın-erkek demeden okuma çağında olan herkese eğitim şart koşulmuştur. Ayrıca yaşları ileri olanlar için cahillikle mücadele kursları açılarak eğitim almaları amaçlanmıştır. Social and political position of woman in Turkish history has shown sharp changes over time. Experienced religious changes, contact with the cultures of different regions, has been main cause of this change. Besides Turkish woman's rights have not been the same in each period. Thus, the rights of education and training which is the most basic rights of human, constituted one of the biggest problems of the Turkish woman. In this study the state of education of Azerbaijan Turkish woman was discussed between the years 1917-1953. Turkish woman has not taken place enought either in Azerbaijan schools and madrasas in what we call classical training as in the other regions of Turkish World. But especially in the 19th and 20th century, both the influence of Jadeedism of activities and at the same time with the activities of consious intellectual occured in Azerbaijan the state of women's education has become questionable. Also opening schools for women, they began to find a place for themselves in magazines and newspapers. Besides in girls schools which opened by the tsarist, children of families that has good financial situation have been trained. But it is a fact that is the purpose of creating tsarist human at schools opened by Russian. In Azerbaijian national republic which stated between the years 1918-1920, women's education have been the first subject.After the establishment of Soviet domination in Azerbaijan, women's education process has followed a different path. Because for the settlement of Soviet ideology, education is used as the most effective tool. For this reason compulsory education has been brought and provided everyone who has the age of studying without distinguishing men and women. Also for those who are advanced in age were intented to receive education by opening training courses to combat illiteracy. 192

A imprensa feminina desempenha importante papel na educação de mulheres letradas. Nas décadas de 50 e 60 do século XX, as revistas femininas ocupavam um lugar de destaque na vida de suas leitoras, dialogando com elas sobre problemas cotidianos. Eram conselheiras e confidentes; companheiras de lazer. A partir disso é possível afirmar que tais periódicos podem colaborar para a manutenção de determinados padrões, veiculando papéis ditos tradicionais de mulher, de comportamento, de sexualidade e de relações de gênero. As fontes da pesquisa são compostas por 31 volumes da Revista Querida com exemplares que representam os anos compreendidos entre 1958 e 1968. O objetivo da pesquisa com tais revistas seria procurar compreender que modos de comportamento os discursos presentes na coluna Certo e Errado de Querida (1958-1968) teriam contribuído para sugerir e que representações de uma época esses discursos, veiculados nas páginas das revistas selecionadas, ecoaram. Women's press has an important role in the education of literate women. In the 50's and 60's of the twentieth century women's magazines occupied a prominent place in the lives of its readers, talking to them about everyday problems. They were counselors and confidants, entertainment partners. From this it can be said that such journals may contribute to the maintenance of certain standards, passing so-called traditional roles of women, behavior, sexuality and gender relations. The research sources are composed of 31 volumes of the Querida magazine with copies representing the years between 1958 and 1968. The objective of this research with such magazines is to seek to understand patterns of behavior that the speeches in the column Right and Wrong in Querida (1958-1968) would have contributed to suggest and what representations of a time these speeches, which appeared on pages of the selected magazines, echoed.

This study was carried out to determine the impact of nutrition given to women on their knowledge about osteoporosis over 90 woman trainees at the public education center of Cubuk, the governorship of Ankara. Questionnaire forms were used as pre and post tests. Variance analysis, t test, frequencies and percentages of data were computed. A significant difference was found between the groups in terms of knowledge levels of women concerning nutrition and osteoporosis after the training applied. Public education aims to gain adults the skills and knowledge towards interpretation of free times of social and cultural activities. With public education, people living in the region especially women contribute to production. In Amasya, there are courses provided for women in Public Education Centers and it is made sure that they attend theses courses. In this study, a section of said center and Yassıçal broadcloth weavings are analyzed. Motifs and product examples in Yassıçal weavings are examined. These motifs are Eminem, Tekke peşkürü, Suleyman, Sinekli, Mehmet Dede, Kara viran, Çift mekik and Deveci kesmesi. This traditional motifs began to weave again. A variety of woven products; living room sets, veil, curtains, runners, bags, doll clothes and women's clothes are produced by traniees.

Distance learning is any type of education that occurs while location, time, or both separate the participants. In distance learning, the teacher, through the use of technology, delivers instructions to a student at a separate location (Siddiqui, H. M, 2004). The term open and distance learning represents approaches that focus on opening access to education and training provision, freeing learners from the constraints of the time and place, and offering flexible learning opportunities to individuals and groups of the learners (Talesra, 2004). Distance education, structure learning in which the student and instructor are separated by time and space, is currently the fastest growing form of domestic and international education (McIsaac, M. S & Gunawardena, C. N, 1996). Bu tez Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun son döneminde ve Cumhuriyet'in ilk yıllarında İstanbul Amerikan Kız Koleji'nde toplumsal cinsiyet ve kimlik inşasını ele almaktadır. Kurumun, ülkenin kızlarını eğitmekteki amaçları ve hedeflenen kadın tipinin özellikleri de bu çerçevede incelenmektedir. Bu çalışma aynı zamanda ülkedeki birçok tarihi, siyasi ve toplumsal gelişmeye paralel olarak kurumun değişen kimlik ve amaçlarına da ışık tutmaktadır. Osmanlı sön döneminde Halide Edib ve Cumhuriyet ilk döneminde Yıldız Sertel olmak üzere kolejin tanınmış iki mezunu örnek olarak işlenmektedir. Amerikan Kız Koleji'nin, bağımsız bir karakter, liberal bir bakış açısı, yüksek bir zihinsel kapasite ve zihinsel becerilerin yanı sıra güçlü bir feminist farkındalığa sahip kadın yetiştirme hedefleri örnekleriyle bu tezde yer almaktadır. Okulun, sunduğu uluslararası geçerlilikte eğitimle, hem öğrencilerin akademik, sosyal ve ahlaki gelişimine hem de yeni bir Türk kadını imajının oluşumuna yaptığı katkılar da bu çalışmanın konusudur. Kolejin eğitim programı öğrencilerin düşünce yapılarını şekillendirmede o kadar etkili olmuştur ki, bunun sonucu olarak mezunlardan birçoğu kadınların özgürleşmesi ve ülkenin gelişmesi yolunda çalışmalarda bulunmuş ve yalnızca Türkiye'de değil yurt dışında da etkili isimler olmuşlardır.Anahtar kelimeler: Toplumsal cinsiyet, Kimlik, Kızların eğitimi, Kadınların özgürleşmesi, Feminist bilinç, Halide Edib This thesis examines gender and identity construction at the American College for Girls in Istanbul in late-Ottoman and early-Republican era. The objectives of the institution in educating women in the country as well as the characteristics of the woman envisioned by the college are also handled in this frame. Besides, the analysis sheds a light on the evolving identity and goals of the institution which underwent changes that were in many ways parallel to the historical, political and social changes in the country. It also gives two notable examples of the alumnae; Halide Edib in late-Ottoman era and Yıldız Sertel in early-Republican era. The college's goals to raise women with an independent character, a liberal spirit, a high feminist consciousness, and strong mental power and skills are covered with examples. The college's contributions in the students' academic, social and moral development by offering an education of universal applicability as well as in the formation of a new image of Turkish woman are explored in this study. Erken Cumhuriyet döneminde, Cumhuriyetin kurucularının `Muasır Medeniyetler seviyesine ulaşmak` ideali olan batılılaşma ve modernleşme projesi, Türkiye için büyük öneme sahiptir. Bu dönemde önemli yer tutan eğitim, imkanlar ölçüsünde geliştirilmiştir ve bu bağlamda kadınlara çok önemli görevler ve sorumluluklar yüklenmiştir. Çalışmada Kız Teknik Okulların üretimleri, 1945-1975 arasına tarihlenen dönem kapsamında incelenmiştir. Bunun başlıca sebebi; 1940'lı yıllardan sonra ikinci dünya savaşı ile ülkenin gelişimi ve kalkınması bakımından mesleki ve teknik eğitime önem verilmesidir. Cumhuriyetin kuruluşu ile birlikte devlet, mesleki ve teknik eğitimin durumuyla sistemsel olarak ilgilenmeye başlamıştı ve bu bağlamda Kız Teknik Okullarının yaygınlaştırılması öngörülmüştü.Çalışmanın temelinde, kadınların dahil edildiği üretime yönelik kız teknik eğitimi ele alınmıştır. Kız Teknik Okulları kuruluş süreçleri, eğitim programları ve üretimleri açısından incelenmiştir.Kız Teknik Okulları Müfredatı kapsamında yapılan üretimler, tezin temel araştırma konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Cumhuriyet döneminde `rasyonel üretim` kavramının anlamı ve müfredattaki yeri araştırılmıştır. Geleneksel Türk el sanatları ve geleneksel Türk giyiminden esinlenilerek Kız Teknik Okullarında çok çeşitli üretimler yapılmaktaydı. Tezde geleneksel Türk el sanatlarında ve geleneksel Türk giyiminde kullanılan motiflerin `modernleştirme` ve `stilizasyon` çalışmaları yapılmasıyla oluşturulan işleme, biçki-dikiş, moda-çiçek, resim ve mobilya dersleri üretimleri seçilen çalışmalar üzerinden incelenmektedir. Bu üretimler Cumhuriyet modernleşme politikaları bağlamında da irdelenmekte ve ilişkilendirilmektedir. Çalışmada `sergi` ve `defile` kavramının, Kız Teknik Okullarındaki anlamı, yurt içinde ve yurt dışında düzenlenen sergiler ve defileler üzerinden işlenmektedir ve sergilerin işlevleri de yorumlanmaktadır. Ayrıca okullarda üretimler için kurulan sipariş ve gelişim atölyeleri ve bu atölyelerin ekonomik katkıları ele alınmaktadır.Çalışmanın yöntemi nitel araştırmadır ve çalışmanın temel veri toplama yöntemi doküman incelemesine dayanmaktadır. Araştırma sorusunun kapsadığı dönemdeki dergi ve gazetelerde yer alan makaleler, yazılar, bazı haber ve reklamlar, resmi belgeler ve edebi metinler yazılı doküman kısmını oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma sürecinde görsel ve yazılı veri toplama aşamasından sonra betimsel veri analizi ve yorumlama yapılarak sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır.Çalışmanın birinci bölümünde, araştırmanın amacı, kapsamı ve yöntemi hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Bununla birlikte, Kız Teknik Okulları müfredatı kapsamındaki üretimin incelenmesi konusunun seçilmesinin önemi açıklanmıştır.Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde, cumhuriyet döneminde kadın ve kadına yönelik gelişmeler; eğitim, çalışma, hukuk, siyaset, sosyal alanlar üzerinden ele alınmaktadır. Böylece Cumhuriyet'in modernleşme projesi bağlamında Cumhuriyet yönetimi tarafından atılan önemli adımların kadınlara yansıyan yönleri anlatılmaktadır.Çalışmanın üçüncü bölümünde Cumhuriyet döneminde `rasyonel üretim` konusu; rasyonel üretim bağlamında kadın ve rasyonel üretim bağlamında hijyen ve sağlıklı nesil yetiştirme kavramları üzerinden işlenmektedir.Çalışmanın dördüncü bölümünde, Kız Teknik Eğitimi; Cumhuriyet öncesi dönem ve Erken Cumhuriyet dönemi olmak üzere incelenmektedir. Erken Cumhuriyet Dönemi Kız Teknik Eğitimi; Kız Sanat Ortaokulları, Kız Enstitüleri, Akşam Kız Sanat Okulları, Kız Teknik Öğretmen Okulları, Köy Kadınları Gezici Kursları ve Olgunlaşma Enstitülerinden oluşmaktadır. Ayrıca, bu eğitim yapılarının ülke içinde dağılımı belirtilmiştir. Ayrıca Kız Teknik Okullarında mesleki ve teknik eğitimin işlevleri yorumlanmaktadır. Burada Kız Teknik Okulları müfredat programı üretimler bakımından incelenmektedir.Çalışmanın beşinci bölümünde, Kız Teknik Okullarının üretimleri, sergiler ve defileler incelenmektedir. Geleneksel Türk el sanatları ve geleneksel Türk giyiminden esinlenilerek Kız Teknik Okullarında yapılan üretimler, seçilen çalışmalar üzerinden incelenmektedir. Bu bölümde 1943-1944 yıllarında yayınlanan Kadın-Ev ve 1953-1970 yılları arasında yayınlanan Mesleki ve Teknik Öğretim dergilerinden yararlanılarak Kız Teknik Okullarının üretimleri ve sergileri seçilen örnekler üzerinden ele alınmıştır. Bununla beraber sergi ve defile kavramının, Kız Teknik Okullarındaki anlamı, yurt içinde ve yurt dışında düzenlenen sergiler ve defileler üzerinden işlenmekte ve sergilerin işlevleri yorumlanmaktadır. Ayrıca müfredat kapsamında yapılan üretimler için kurulan atölyeler ve bu atölyelerin ekonomik katkıları incelenmektedir. Çalışmanın altıncı bölümünü oluşturan sonuç bölümünde, araştırmadan elde edilen veriler birbirleriyle oluşturduğu ilişki örüntüleri göz önünde bulundurularak sentezlenmiş ve tezin amaçları doğrultusunda genel olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Kız Teknik Okulları Müfredatı kapsamındaki üretimlerin gündelik hayattaki çıktıları, yürütülen Cumhuriyet modernleşme projesiyle ilişkili olarak tartışılmaktadır. In the early (Turkish) Republic period, the idea of the founders of (Turkish) Republic is `to achieve the level of contemporary civilizations` as westernization and modernization project has great importance for Turkey. During this period, education which took a very important role, developed according to the possible opportunities. Moreover, in this context very important duties and responsibilities are assumed to women.In the study, the productions of Girls' Technical Schools were examined within the period from 1945 to 1975. The main reason for this, after the years of 1940s with second world war, in terms of the development of the country, vocational and technical education had been given importance. With the establishment of Turkish Republic, the government started dealing with the circumstance of vocational and technical education systemically. In addition, within this context the idea to make Girls' Technical Schools widespread was proposed.In the basis of the study, girls' technical education was oriented with the inclusion of women into production is discussed. Moreover, Girls' Technical Schools are analyzed in terms of organizational processes, educational programs and productions.The productions made under the Curriculum of Girls' Technical Schools constitute the basic research subject of the thesis. Moreover, the meaning of `rational production` concept in the Republican Period and its place in the curriculum has been studied. Furthermore, a great variety of productions were created in the Girls' Technical Schools inspired by traditional Turkish handicrafts and traditional Turkish clothing. In the thesis, the productions of embroidery, cut-stitch, fashion-flower, painting and furniture lessons which were created through the studies of `modernization` and `stylization` of motifs which were used in traditional Turkish handicrafts and traditional Turkish clothing examined through the selected works. These productions are scrutinised and linked together in the context of modernization of (Turkish) Republic. In addition, the meaning of the `exhibition` and `fashion show` concepts in Girls' Technical Schools is discussed on the basis of exhibitions and fashion shows which are held in and out of the country and the functions of exhibitions are interpreted as well. Additionally the order and progress ateliers which have been founded for the productions of schools and their economic contributions are analysed.In this study, Girls' Technical Schools are discussed in terms of organizational processes, educational programs and productions.The method of this study is qualitative research and the method of fundamental data collection is based on document analysis. Essays, critiques, news and advertisements that take place in the periodicals and newspapers, formal documents and literary texts in the period of this study constitute the printed document of this research. In this study process; after collecting visual and printed data, the conclusions are figured out by descriptive data analysis and interpretation.In the first section of this study, aim, scope and method of the research is explained. Moreover, the importance of the subject `the production under the curriculum of Girls' Technical Schools` is explicated within the scope of the research. In the second section of this study, the change of social roles of women in education, employment, law, politics and social areas are discussed. Moreover, within the context of the modernization project of the Republic, reflections of the significant steps over the women taken by Republican administration are stated. In the third section of this study, the subject of `rational production` in the Republic period is discussed through the concepts of `woman in the context of rational production` and `hygiene and growing healthy generation in the context of rational production`. In the fourth section of this study, Girls' Technical Education is examined in the Pre-Republican Period and Early Republic Period. Girls' Technical Education in the Early Republic Period consisted of Secondary Schools for Girls, Girls' Institutes, Evening Trade Schools for Girls, Girls' Technical Teacher Training Schools, Travelling Courses for Village Women and Institutes of Maturity (Further Training Institute for Girls). Furthermore, the distribution of the educational buildings in the country is pointed out. In addition, the functions of vocational and technical education in Girls' Technical Schools are interpreted. Additionally, the curriculum of Girls' Technical Schools is investigated with regards to productions.In the fifth section of this study, the productions, exhibitions and fashion shows of Girls' Technical Schools are studied. Furthermore, the creation of productions in the Girls' Technical Schools was inspired by traditional Turkish handicrafts and traditional Turkish clothing is examined through the selected works. Moreover, in this section, Kadın-Ev (Woman-Home) periodicals which were published between 1943 and 1944 and Mesleki ve Teknik Öğretim (Vocational and Technical Education) periodicals which were published between 1953 and 1970 are benefited from so as to exemplify productions and exhibitions of Girls' Technical Schools. In addition, the meaning of the `exhibition` and `fashion show` concepts in Girls' Technical Schools is discussed on the basis of exhibitions and fashion shows which are held in the country and abroad and the functions of exhibitions are interpreted as well. Additionally, founded ateliers for the productions of schools and the economic contributions of these ateliers are analysed.In the sixth section of this study which constitutes the conclusion of this study, the research findings are synthesized together by taking into consideration the contact patterns and they are evaluated generally in accordance with the aims of this thesis. The daily life outcomes of the productions under the Curriculum of Girls' Technical Schools in relation with perfoming the modernization project of Republic are discussed. Thesis study sets ground for future studies related to the productions of Girls' Technical Schools which were founded in parallel with the modernization of (Turkish) Republic. 289

Abdülhamid Dönemi eğitim politikalarını tüm imparatorluk sınırları içinde incelenmek uzun bir zaman ve daha fazla maddi kaynak gerektirdiğinden dolayı tezi Selanik Vilayeti'ne bağlı Selanik merkeziyle sınırlandırdık. Selanik merkezini seçmemizin en önemli nedenlerinden biri, uzun yıllar boyunca Osmanlı İmparatorluğu hakimiyetinde kalan kentin farklı etnik ve kimliklere sahip cemaatlerden (Musevi-Müslüman-Hristiyan) oluşmasıydı. Kentin çok dinlilik ve çok dillilik özelliğinin yanı sıra, Selanik, eğitim açısından getirilen yeniliklerin uygulanmaya çalışıldığı bir kenttir. Eğitimli ve zengin insanların bu şehirde bulunması nedeniyle reformların ve yeniliklerin uygulanması kozmopolit olan bu kentte meydana gelmesi birçok modern okulun kurulmasında etkili olmuştur. Bunun dışında Selanik'teki okullar hem eğitim hem de donanım açısından mutlakıyet devrinin önemli okulları arasında bulunmaktaydı. Bu durum Selanik'in sahip olduğu konumu, sosyo-ekonomik açıdan gelişmişlik düzeyi ve diğer topluluklarla daha yakın iletişim içinde bulunmasından kaynaklanmaktadır.Yahudi ve Hristiyan cemaatlerin eğitimi kısmında kullanılan temel kaynaklar Yunanistan ve İsrail'deki üniversitelerde bulunan akademisyenlerin değerli çalışmalarından oluşmaktaydı. Tezin asıl eksik olan kısmı ise (Müslüman tebaanın eğitimi) Osmanlı arşivinden alınan belgeler, salnameler ve döneme ait gazete ve dergilerin yanı sıra ikincil kaynakların desteğiyle tamamlanmaya çalışıldı. Due to financial problems and time scarcity, in this study, I had to chose the city, surrounded with sanjak of Salonica, had a special significance in the Ottoman geography as it included people from various races, religions and culture ( Jews- Christian- Muslim). In addition to cosmopolitan features of the city, Salonica had modern- developed schools and methods of teaching thanks to having some characteristics such as being center of the sanjak and having educated–rich people. Furthermore, it was one of the most flourishing cities of the Empire in that time. In the sections of Christian and Jews education I tried to drawn up via mostly secondary sources taken by academicians from Tel- Aviv, Hebrew and Aristotle University. The missing chapter which was Muslim Girls' education was filled up by primary sources based on archival sources, newspapers and educational and provincial yearbooks. Türkiye'nin, Cumhuriyet'in ilanıyla birlikte toplumsal olarak büyük bir değişimin içerisine girdiği yadsınamayacak bir gerçektir. Bu süreçte kadının rolü ve gelişimi çok önemli olmuştur. Türk kadını, dünyada medenî addedilen pek çok ülkenin kadınından da önce birtakım haklara sahip olmuştur. Ancak bu haklar yoğun bir çaba sonucu elde edilmiş değildir. Bu sebeple kadınlar tarafından hemen içselleştirilemediği gibi erkekler tarafından da kabullenilememiştir. Dolayısıyla Türk kadınının toplumsal hayatta var olma gayretinde karşılaştığı güçlükler dikkat çekici olmuştur.Stendhal'ın `Roman sokağa tutulan bir aynadır.` sözünde işaret ettiği gibi Cumhuriyet kadınlarının değişimini, gelişimini, arzularını, sorunlarını tespit edebilmek açısından bu dönemde yazılmış olan romanlara kadınların ele alınışı bakımından yaklaşılmasının faydalı olacağı aşikârdır. Eserleri bu bakış açısıyla incelenen Pınar Kür; aile yapısı, eğitimi ve yaşam tarzı ile modern olarak adlandırılabilecek kadınlardan biridir. Eserlerinde de kadınlara ve kadınların hem toplumsal hayatta hem de iç dünyalarında yaşadıkları sıkıntılara geniş yer verdiği tespit edilmiştir. Yazarın incelenen yedi romanında özellikle çalışıp kendi ayakları üzerinde duran kadınların ön planda olduğu görülmüştür. Çalışmak, üretmek kadınların mutluluğu açısından bir ön koşul olarak sunulmuştur. Bununla birlikte çalışan kadınların da mutlu olmadığı görülmektedir. Pınar Kür'ün yaratmış olduğu kadınların en büyük ortak sorunlarından biri cinselliktir. Eserlerde yer alan kadınların bir kısmı ilk cinsel deneyimine büyük anlamlar yükleyerek hayal kırıklığına uğrarken bir kısmı da rızası dışında cinsel deneyimler yaşamak zorunda kalmıştır. Cinsel deneyim, romanlarda hangi açıdan işlenirse işlensin karakterlerin ruhsal durumlarına etkisi ile ele alınmıştır. Evlilik kurumu da yazarın üzerinde durduğu hususlardan biridir. Ancak eserlerde, evliliğe geleneksel Türk toplumundan farklı bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşıldığı görülmektedir. Pınar Kür'ün kadınları, eşlerine bağlı kalmak için atmış oldukları imzayı yeterli görmemektedir. Bir kadın ve bir erkeğin hayatı paylaşması için evliliğin şart olarak algılanmaması gibi.Eserlerindeki ana karakterlerini genellikle iyi eğitim almış bireyler olarak kurgulamış olan yazar, bu karakterlerin ailesine ve fiziksel özelliklerine yer verdiği gibi politik görüşlerine de yer vermiştir. Bu noktada dikkate değer olan husus, ana karakterlerin sosyalist bir dünya görüşüne sahip olmasıdır. Bu yönüyle romanda geniş yer tutan kadın karakterler yazarın görüşlerini yansıtır gibidir. Pınar Kür, tüm bunların yanı sıra eserlerinde roman yazma tekniklerine de yer vermiş olan bir yazardır. Bir insanı yazmaya iten sebepleri irdelediği satırlarda aynı zamanda yazma süreçlerini de aktarmıştır. Kadın özgürlüğü hareketine yazdıklarıyla destek olan bir kadın yazarın roman yazma yöntemini aktardığı postmodern romanlar dikkat çekicidir. It's an undeniabled truth that Turkey experienced a major social evolution with the declaration of Republic. Women's role and development were very important in this process. Turkish women possessed various rights before most of the women living in countries which were accepted as civilized. But these rigths weren't possessed after a big struggle. For this reason they weren't internalized by women immediately and weren't accepted by men easily. In consequence the complicacies against the existance struggle of Turkish women in society became invincible.When we look at the way Sthendal points with the line `Novel is a mirror reflecting the street.` İt becomes obvious that analyzing the novels through women characters will be useful to determine the evolution, alternation, lust and problems of Republican women. Pınar Kür, whose novels we've studied from this point of view, is named to be a modern women because of her family's properties, her education and her lifestyle. It's determined that she featured women and their distress in both social and internal livings in her novels widely.It's observed in seven novels we've analyzed, espacially working women standing alone in life were loomed large. Working and producing were suggested as a pre-condition for women's happiness. But also it's recognized that working women were not happy too. Sexuality is one of the major and mutual problems of women in Pınar Kür's novels. Some women in novels were disappointed bacause of their expectations about the first sexual exprience and some experienced undesired sexual intercourse. However sexual experience is discussed, it's always revealed with the effects on women's spiritual states.Marriage is one of the author's focus points. But she approaches marriage differently than the Turkish society's traditional point of view. Pınar Kür's ladies don't accept the signature enough for being committed to a spouse. Just like it's not obligatory to be married for men and women to share a living.Pınar Kür, who formed her leading characaters as well educated indivudials, reflects their political opinions adding to their physical and parental properties. It's an invincible point that the main characaters have socialist political views. The women characters reflects author's political thoughts with their socialist personalities.Adding to these Pınar Kür also used various novel technics in her creations. She told her writing processes in the lines where she was discussing the reasons heading one to write. The female author who supports the women freedom movement with her works of art has admirable postmodern novels in which she reveals her methods of novel writing. 216

Bu çalışmada, 8 Eylül 2008 ve 8 Eylül 2012 tarihleri arasında ülke genelindeuygulanan Ana-Kız Okuldayız Okuma-Yazma Kampanyası (AKOK)değerlendirilmiştir. Betimsel tarama modeli niteliğinde olan araştırmanın evrenini,çalışmanın alt problemlerine ilişkin olarak Türkiye'de AKOK kapsamında 2008-2012yılları arasında uygulanmış olan tüm okuma-yazma kursları oluşturmaktadır.Türkiye'de yetişkin okuryazarlığını yaygınlaştırma çalışmalarının uzun bir geçmişivardır. Cumhuriyet'in ilanından günümüze yetişkinlere yönelik birçok okuma-yazmaprogramı uygulanmış, kampanya ve seferberliklerle sorunun çözümüne çalışılmıştır. Bugeniş kapsamlı çabaların günümüz itibariyle sonuncusu `Ana-Kız Okuldayız Okuma-Yazma Kampanyası`dır. Kampanya, Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK) Adrese DayalıNüfus Kayıt Sistemi (ADNKS) 2008 yılı verilerine göre ülkemizde okuryazar olmayantoplam 4.876.892 yetişkin bireyin % 60'ını oluşturan yaklaşık 3 milyon okumazyazmaznüfusu dört yılda okuryazar duruma getirmeyi hedeflemiştir. In this study, the literacy campaign Mothers and Daughters are at School (MDAS),which applied countrywide between 8 September 2008 and 8 September 2012, has beenevaluated. All the literacy courses opened in the context of MDAS between the years of2008-2012 has formed the target population of the study which is in descriptive surveymodel.In Turkey the efforts for extending adult literacy have a long history. Many literacyprograms for adults have been applied since the foundation of the Republic, the problemhas been tried to solve by campaigns and mobilisations. The recent one of these farreachingefforts is `Mothers and Daughters are at School Campaign`. The campaignaimed to make literate % 60 of the adults in the whole illiterate adult population of thecountry, which was in total 4.876.892 according to the address-based populationregistration system of Turkish Statistical Institute, in four years. % 80 of these illiterateadults in the target of the campaign is illiterate women in 2008. Although these existingdata that shows illiteracy is a women issue no plan and programme has been preparedfor women and for all the illiterate people and no different approach different from theprevious campaigns has been developed. However it has been expected to be moresuccessful than the previous campaigns. So that in order to reach the aimed number atthe end of four years, comparatively in the first year % 15, in the second year % 30, inthe third year % 45 and in the fourth year which was the last year of the campaign % 60of the population has been aimed to get literate and to direct all the participants for thenext upper education programme.Ministry of National Education (MONE) didn't do any incentive study devoted tothe adults in order to reach the two aims of the campaign and in this process manyproblems occurred in all sub-dimensions (introduction, organization, financing,educators, etc.) of the campaign. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar son yüzyılımızın önemli şair ve yazarlarından biridir. Onun edebiyat hayatımız için önemi hem verdiği eserlerden hem de yaptığı çalışmalardan kaynaklanmaktadır. Tanpınar yazdığı şiir, roman, deneme ve hikâyelerle yazın hayatında kendisinden sonraki yazarları etkileyecek kalıcı eserler bırakmasının yanında, edebiyat alanındaki makaleleri ve edebiyat tarihi yazıcılığıyla da öne çıkmıştır.Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar'ın romanlarında imgesel yönden yaratıcı şiirsel bir anlatımın yanı sıra toplumsal değişimin izlerini de görmek mümkündür. Ahmet Hamdi bu iki noktaya değinirken büyük ölçüde 'kadın' mefhumundan yola çıkar. Çünkü romanlarda 'kadın' ferdî yönüyle var olurken şiirsel üslubun, imge ve analojilerin kaynağı; toplumsal varlığıyla ele alınırken dönemin sosyal hayatının yapı taşıdır.Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar'ın romanlarındaki kadın karakterler işlevlerine göre ön plana çıkar. Çoğunlukla erkek başkişinin hayatında 'değiştirici-dönüştürücü' etkisi olan kadın karakterler diğerlerine göre daha ayrıntılı ele alınmıştır. Bunlar eserdeki 'norm karakter'leri oluşturur. Bu kadınlar romandaki olayların gelişimini yönlendirir. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar bu kadınları erkek anlatıcı gözünden anlatır. Fakat anlatıcının anlattığı karakter, erkek başkişinin gözünde daha masalsı bir anlatıma bürünerek değişir. Kadın karakterlerin bazıları ise tek bir özelliğiyle öne çıkan ve bu özellikle kurguya katkıda bulunan karakterlerdir. Bu kişilerin, eserin olay örgüsüne katkısı daha azdır. Bu karakterler daha ziyade romanın 'sosyal ortamını' oluşturur.Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar'ın kadın karakterleri tek başlarına var olmaktan öte kültür, tabiat ve sanata ilişkin pek çok unsurla iç içe geçerek anlatılmıştır. In addition to permanent effects of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's poems, novels, essays and histories on writers after him, he also came to the front by his articles about literature and literature history writings.We started our study from Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's novels, then we analyze his other works. In addition to observ able imaginative creativeness and lyrical discourse in his novels, it's possible to observe social changes. Ahmet Hamdi uses 'Woman' as a concept while mentioning this topics. Because while 'Woman' is existing with her personality, she is the source of image ryandanalogy; but while mentioning by her social existence, she is the fundamental part of her period's social life.Woman characters in the Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's novels are coming to the front by their functions. Woman characters which are the modifiers of the main man character's life, are more analyzed in more detail. These are the norm characters of the creation. These women control the progress of happening in the novel. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, narrates these women from man's point of view. But the character which is narrated by narrator, become fabulous in the point of main man character's view.Some of the woman characters comes to the front with just one explicit characteristic. These women have less effect on the story then the others. These women are used for creating the `social environment`.More than existing on their own, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's women characters are narrated telescopically with the elements related to culture, nature and art. These women who generally have an intellectual knowledge are holder of the culture rather than a regular education system put forward with all its aspects. Bu çalışma, Arap feminizminin öncüsü olarak tanınan Kasım Emin ve kadının özgürlüğü bağlamında eğitimle ilgili görüşlerini ele almak üzere hazırlanmıştır. Çalışmanın amacı 19. yüzyılda ve 20. yüzyılın hemen başlarında Mısır kadınının eğitim durumunu ve bu durumun onun toplumsal statüsüne etkisini ayrıntıyla inceleme konusundaki ihtiyacı gidermektir.Çalışma nitel bir araştırma olduğundan tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini Kasım Emin'in tüm eserleri, örneklemini ise Kasım Emin'in Tahriru'l Mer'e ve el-Mer'etu'l Cedîde eserleri oluşturmaktadır.Çalışma bir giriş ve üç bölümden oluşmaktadır. Giriş bölümünde dönemin Mısır toplumunda kadının durumu ile ilgili bilgiler verilmiştir. Birinci bölümde çalışmayı daha iyi kavrayabilmek adına 19. yüzyıl ve 20. yüzyıl aralığında Mısır'ın tarihsel arka planı incelenmiş ve kadın hareketlerinin diğer toplumlardaki başlangıcı ve gelişimine kısaca değinilmiştir.İkinci bölümde Kasım Emin'in hayatına dair biyografik bilgilere yer verilmiş ve eserleri kısaca tanıtılmıştır.Üçüncü bölümde Tahrîru'l Mer'e ve el-Mer'etu'l Cedîde kitapları çerçevesinde Kasım Emin'in kadının özgürlüğü bağlamında eğitime dair görüşlerine yer verilmiştir.Sonuçta ise kısa ömrünü özgürlük ve eğitim için fikir mücadelesiyle geçirmiş bir entelektüel olan Kasım Emin'in görüşleri çerçevesinde genel çıkarımlarda bulunulmuştur. This study is prepared to discuss Qasim Amîn, who is known as the pioneer of Arabic feminism, and his opinions on education within the context of women's liberation. The objective of this study is to fulfil the need of an analysis that reviews the education status of Egyptian women in the 19th century and in the early 20th century, as well as the effects of this situation on the social status of Egyptian women. Screening model is used since the study is a qualitative research. Research population of the research is comprised of the entire works of Qasim Amîn, and research sample is comprised of the works of Qasim Amîn titled Tahrir'al Mar'ah and al-Mar'atu'l Jadidah.The study is comprised of a preamble and three chapters. In the preamble, information is given in relation with the status of women in the Egyptian society of the era. In the first chapter, historical background of Egypt is analysed within the context of the era between 19th century and 20th century, and beginning and development of women's movement in other societies are assessed in brief in order to have a better grasp of the subject. In the second chapter, biographical information in relation with the life of Qasim Amîn is presented and his works are introduced briefly. In the third chapter, Qasim Amîn's opinions on education are presented as part of women's liberation within the framework of the books titled Tahrir'al Mar'ah and al-Mar'atu'l Jadidah.In the conclusion chapter, general inferences are presented within the framework of the opinions of Qasim Amîn, who is an intellectual who spent his short life fighting for liberalism and education. 81

Bu çalışma, bir bakıma bu eserler ile Jenkins'in hayatının ve yazıldıkları dönemin aynı bağlamda okunması olarak adlandırılabilir. Ayrıca Jenkins'in eserlerinin ve bu eserlerin yazıldığı döneme rastlayan diğer tarihi eserlerin ve seyahat yazılarının da paralel olarak okunmasına dayanmaktadır. This PhD dissertation aims to study Hester Donaldson Jenkins' texts, particularly the texts concerning with Turkish women, education (of women) and missionary activities in a New Historicist perspective. Therefore, the books Behind Turkish Lattices: The Story of a Turkish Woman's Life (1911) and Ibrahim Pasha, Grand Vizir of Suleiman the Magnificent (her thesis) (1911), An Educational Ambassador to the Near East: The Story of Mary Mills Patrick and an American College in the Orient (1925) and some of her articles gain importance. The study can be considered as a parallel reading of these texts and Jenkins' biography, of these texts and the time in which they were written. Moreover, it is also based on the parallel reading of the texts of Jenkins and the historical and travel writings written in the same period. This study addresses one main question: How were the Turkish women, their position, their education and their gender relations depicted in the texts of Hester Donaldson Jenkins? Thus, the historical side of the era will be dealt with especially taking the writings into consideration by the historians, such as İlber Ortaylı, Feroz Ahmad, Bernard Lewis, and Carter Findley.As for the background to the writings of Hester Donaldson Jenkins, the dissertation also analyzes accounts of other travel writings about Turkey and Turkish Women from the same period. These include the British writer Grace Ellison and the American travelers Anna Bowman Dodd (1855-1929), Mary Mills Patrick (1850-1940), a Greek Ottoman Demetra Vaka Brown (1877-1946) and also the Turkish women writers who travelled abroad, Zeyneb Hanoum (ca.1883-ca.1923), Halide Edib (1882-1964) and Selma Ekrem (1902-1986). After the period in which Jenkins had lived in the Ottoman Empire, there were a lot of important events in the Empire. On the one hand, Second Constitutionalism and the Young Turk movement, and, on the other hand, Balkan Wars and World War I were the incidents with high impact in the country. In this context, the underlying concepts of the New Historicism, textuality, intertextuality and historicity will be considered and Jenkins' texts will be evaluated from this perspective.To Jenkins, the education that the Turkish women need is vital for their emancipation. Therefore, in the fourth chapter the historical, religious and biographical bases of Jenkins will be disclosed with reference to other writings from the same period. By taking the case of the Village Institutes (VIs) experience in Turkey, 1940-1946 period in particular, this thesis aims to investigate and answer the question of whetherVIs' education (including its tools: pedagogy, curriculum, activities, methods and the system) contribute to the empowerment process of its women graduates by challenging the pressure and the gender norms of patriarchal society? 1940-1946 was the period that the foundational aims of the VIs were implemented despite the adverse impact of patriarchal society, which reinforced private/public dichotomy, subordination of women to men and disabled female education in rural Turkey. It was, also the time when the Republican project of modernization, nation building and democratization and its focal point of women's emancipation and education were in the foreground of the political sphere. By benefiting from the models of power, empowerment theory and critical theory in education, and by applying Rowlands'(1997) qualitative model as theoretical framework, this thesis examines whether the contribution of VIs' to education was sufficient to challenge patriarchal pressure and to empower its women graduates on personal, collective and relational levels. Based on evidence from the interviews, this thesis argues that VIs' education contributed to its women graduates' personal development and empowerment in personal level. However, it was not enough by itself in challenging gender norms, patriarchal obstacles and pressure of society, which limited women graduates' collective (social) empowerment and inhibited empowerment within close relationship level. 263

Yapılan araştırmada, KA.DER'in düzenlemiş olduğu ''Kadın Yurttaşların ve Aktivistlerin Seçmenler ve Aktif Yurttaşlar Olarak Güçlendirilmesi Projesi''ndeki katılımcı kadınların eğitime katılma dinamiklerinin, beklentilerinin ve kazanımlarının toplumsal cinsiyet bağlamında saptanması amaçlanmıştır.Çalışma grubunu; Aydın, Sinop ve Çanakkale'de düzenlenen eğitime katılan kadınlardan Aydın'dan 8, Sinop'tan 8 ve Çanakkale'den 7 olmak üzere toplam 23 katılımcı kadın oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma verileri, nitel yöntemle elde edilmiş ve araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen görüşme formu kullanılarak, çalışma grubunu oluşturan kişilerle görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Bununla birlikte, eğitim ortamına katılarak gözlem yapılmış, katılımcılarla informal sohbet yapılmış, araştırma konusu çerçevesindeki literatür taranmıştır. Veriler sayısallaştırma kaygısı olmaksızın, nitel veri analiz yöntemiyle çözümlenmiş, araştırmanın amacına uygun veriler öncelikle kodlanmış ve betimsel çözümlemesi yapılmış ardından; araştırma sorularına göre oluşturulan çerçevede veriler bir araya getirilip çözümlenerek yorumlanmıştır.Sonuç olarak, bu eğitimde kadınların verili toplumsal cinsiyet rollerini ve kadını kamusal alanın tepesinde olan siyasal katılımdan alıkoyan pratikleri eleştirel/sorgulayıcı bir bakışla analiz edip 'söylem' düzeyinde bir dönüşümün yaşandığı söylenebilir. Kadınların bu eğitime; bilgi edinmek, bilinçlenmek ve etrafındakileri bilinçlendirmek için katıldıkları ve bu konuda çoğunlukla beklentilerinin karşılandığı görülmüştür. Bu eğitimin cesaret, özgüven, farkındalık, motivasyon sağlayarak kendilerini güçlendirdiğini ve kadınların siyasal yaşama katılımda bu tarz eğitimlerin etkili olacağını belirtmişlerdir. Eğitim ortamının daha etkileşimsel, uygulama ağırlıklı olması önerilmiş ve en fazla klasik öğretmen tavrından rahatsız oldukları saptanmıştır. The aim of this research is to determine the dynamics of participation of the training, expectations and educational acquirements of women who participated in the Project of the 'Empowerment of Women Citizens'' conducted by KADER in the context of gender issue.The sample of the research is composed of 23 women who participated in the training activity 8 from Aydın, 8 from Sinop and 7 from Çanakkale. The research data was optained with qualitative methods and the interviews were conducted with the sample group by using the interview form developed by researcher. Besides observations and informal chat have been made in the training enviroment and done the literature review in terms of the research topic The data was analyzed by using the qualitative analysis method. The data which was fit for the purpose of the research was coded and first descriptive analysis was made, and it was interpreted by taking into consideration the research questions subsequently. As a result of the study, it has been found that the participants experienced critical learning about gender mainstreaming and the practice to overcome the ideas that blocked women for political participation. It was found out that the participants attended the training activities to get information, become conscious and raise awareness of those around. As for their expectations were mostly met. The participants remarked that the training activities provide courage, self reliance and motivation for women and contribute to raising awareness among women for political participation. They also suggested that the training should be more interactive, practical and eliminated the attitude of traditional teacher. 157

Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu tarafından 2012'de yapılan Hanehalkı İşgücü Anketi sonuçlarına göre Türkiye'de kadın işgücüne katılım oranı %29,5'tir. Bu oranla Türkiye'nin kadın işgücüne katılımı konusunda uluslararası karşılaştırmalarda geride kaldığı görülmektedir (Dünya Bankası 2013). Bunun yanı sıra, Türkiye'de kadın işgücüne katılım oranlarının farklı eğitim ve medeni durum sınıflandırmalarına göre değişkenlik gösterdiği görülmektedir. Eğitim seviyesi daha yüksek olan kadınların işgücüne katılımı daha fazla iken, evli kadınların, hiç evlenmemiş ve boşanmış kadınlara oranla daha düşük işgücüne katılım oranlarına sahip olduğu gözlenmektedir (TÜİK 2013).Bu tez, Türkiye'de kadın işgücüne katılımının yapısal özelliklerini dikkate alarak, kadın işgücü arzını, eğitim ve medeni durum ayrımları temelinde kurulan çok durumlu yaşam tablosu tekniğiyle incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Çalışma yaşam tabloları, varsayımsal bir nüfusun ölümlülük ve işgücü piyasası deneyimlerini özetleyen tekniklerdir. Bu bağlamda bu teknik, Türkiye'de kadınların işgücü piyasasındaki ortalama yaşam beklentileri ve bu yaşam beklentilerinin eğitim ve medeni duruma göre nasıl değiştiğini incelemek adına bu tezde kullanılmaktadır. Veri kaynağı olarak TÜİK tarafından 2009-2010 yıllarında yapılmış panel bir çalışma olan Gelir ve Yaşam Koşulları Anketi'nin iki dalgası kullanılmıştır.Sonuçlar göstermektedir ki, 15 yaşındaki ortalama bir Türk kadınının geri kalan hayatının %73'ünü işgücü dışında geçirmesi beklenmektedir. Beklendiği üzere, eğitim ile kadınların işgücündeki yaşam beklentisi arasında pozitif bir ilişki bulunmuştur; öyle ki, 20 yaşında az eğitimli bir kadının aynı yaştaki daha çok eğitimli bir kadına oranla ortalama olarak 9 yıl daha az işgücünde kalması beklenmektedir. Diğer taraftan, evli olmanın işgücündeki yaşam beklentisi üzerinde negatif bir etkisinin olduğu gözlemlenmiştir; öyle ki, 20 yaşında hiç evlenmemiş bir kadının aynı yaştaki evlenmiş bir kadına oranla ortalama 9.5 yıl daha fazla işgücünde kalması beklenmektedir. According to the results of Household Labor Force Survey conducted by TURKSTAT in 2012, female labor force participation rate in Turkey is 29.5%. International comparisons also reveal that female labor force participation rate is very low in Turkey (World Bank 2013). In addition, it is observed that labor force participation rates of women in Turkey show significant differences between education and marital status groups such that participation rate of married women is lower than never married and divorced women while participation rate of women into the labor force increases as educational attainment increases TURKSTAT 2013).This thesis aims to address the structure of female labor force participation in Turkey by constructing multistate working life tables by educational attainment and marital status. Working life table is a technique which summarizes mortality and labor market experience of a hypothetical population so this technique is employed to estimate working life expectancy of women in Turkey and how working life expectancy changes by education and marital status. The data source used for these estimations is two waves of Income and Living Conditions Survey conducted by TURKSTAT in 2009-2010.The findings suggest that an average Turkish woman at age 15 is expected to spend almost 73% of her remaining lifetime out of labor force. As expected, education has a positive impact on female working life expectancy such that being high educated increases active life expectancy of a woman at age 20 by almost 9 years. On the other hand, being married has a negative impact on active life expectancy of women such that a currently married woman at age 20 has 9.5 years shorter active life expectancy compared to a never married woman at the same age. When both of those variables are controlled, it is observed that the shortest working life expectancy belongs to low educated currently married women. 205

Patterns of education for family life for girls in convent schools (XVII – half of XIXth century) The paper aims to analyse the education and upbringing of girls in schools run by nuns in the period from the seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century. It shows the elements of upbringing and education that shaped the attitudes and values considered the most important in family life. It discusses issues related to the education of girls in how to run and manage a household, how to do household work, how to manage the household expenditure. On the basis of school curricula the range of intellectual education, the development of personal standards (attitudes, behaviours and features of character) of women in this period will be shown. These issues will be presented against a changing historical context, and will focus on girls from different social backgrounds.

This thesis aims to questioning women's role in transmission of tradition based on fieldwork conducted in Ankara and Trabzon Olgunlaşma Enstitüsü which are very important institutions on handcraft tradition. This thesis intends to clarify several issues such as how women describe tradition, how they evaluate their tradition transmission role, how they transform tradition, how they invent traditions, how they use women's knowledge as a power instrument, transmission problems of handcraft knowledge to the next generations, relations between technology and handcraft, national identity and handcraft. This thesis which seeks how women interpret tradition relies on matchings of formal education/Olgunlaşma Institute and tradition/handcraft. On the contrary literature relates tradition with rural, with this study, it has witnessed that tradition finds new ways and strategies to live and survive its existence in pulic space and modern institutions. It has also been observed that tradition is not only connection with past, but also a determiner to understand today and place in today's world. 443

State normal schools were sites of and contributors to a major shift in American society from 1870 to 1920. At the beginning of the period, women’s role in society was legally, socially, and educationally enforced to be separate from and subservient to men’s role. The literature focuses on social movements, women’s roles, and histories of women’s colleges and state universities. However, very little exists exploring state normal schools, let alone the connections between state normal schools, women, and society. This study, therefore, addresses to what extent state normal schools contributed or reflected women’s advancement in education and society. Colorado State Normal School and the University of Colorado provided a case for investigating the experiences of women students and extrapolating larger patterns. State normal schools, although established to address practical needs for additional, better-prepared teachers across the country, fostered a growing challenge to social mores by women students and faculty. Throughout the period, the state normal schools provided the space and resources for women to learn, share, and connect with one another. Compared to state universities, state normal schools provided more enrollment and employment opportunities, developing a sense of group consciousness. Created to enforce and continue the assumed role of women as teachers (and only that), state normal schools significantly contributed to the overall advancement of women in education and society.

George Eliot lived in the early Victorian age which witnessed a transformation in the social structure because of the Industrial Revolution. In Middlemarch, she analyzes the emergence of the capitalist paradigm, and the impact of the new system on individuals and institutions. To demonstrate the interaction among history, culture, industry, defined gender roles and the position of woman in the newly formed social strata, she creates a set of characters from all the layers of the society and weaves their stories in a web of relations. The stories of three women, Dorothea, Rosamond, and Mary from the main classes of the society (aristocracy, middle class, and working class), are rendered along with the expectations of the specific classes in society, with social and political changes, and with the institution of marriage and the moral values pertaining to each class. Eliot indicates that the classes, the products of the capitalist economy, shape the personality of the characters. In the male dominated socio-economic model, women are left outside the production mechanisms, and their efforts for self-development are hindered by the norms of patriarchal society. Appreciating the individual efforts of women who try to go beyond the limits, but seeing also that women suffer from the insufficiency of opportunities, Eliot attempts in her work to depict an ideal heroine. Hence, Middlemarch is the story revealing the evolution of the female identity in capitalist patriarchal order. 87

Aiming to make women apparent, the feminist theory tries to put forward the life style of women of previous times, her being compressed and the intellectual categories. Women?s effort to explain themselves, which started with the demand for right that belonged to enlightenment age, determined the characteristic of women?s studies with their transformation that refers to the fact that the difference has originated from cultural and social patterns. As for the developments of historical methodology provided various opportunities to the researchers on this point and led to creation of many books.Journals which insured mobilisation and spreading of intellectual richness are indispensible resources for making a sense of past. The structure of women?s movement which developed in the aftermath of Industrial Revolution changed with the increase of information, its production and spreading; and therefore, many journals were began to be published. Turkey was also affected from a similar process because of its concerns for modernisation and saving the Empire. Especially the publishing activities which revived after the Announcement of The Second Constitutional Period paved the way for various issues to be handled journals like Kadınlar Dünyası, Mahasin, Demet, Hanım, Genç Kadın, İçtihat, Sebirülreşat, Felsefe Mecmuası, Türk Yurdu which were published between 1908 and 1918; ?women? was one of these issues which were handled and analysed. In the modernising and changing modern world dynamics, women?s demand for right which radicalised with feminism and which also had an impact on the Ottoman Empire led to the development of a women?s movement in parallel to the condition of the Empire. In this new era when the social, political and economic transformation were so quick, intellectual journals and women?s magazines analysed women based on such concepts as feminism, femininity, working, economics, education, family, dressing, polygamy and political participation. Este artigo propõe a discussão do projeto educacional da Igreja Católica no Brasil, entre 1859 e 1919, tendo como objeto imediato de análise a instalação dos Colégios das Irmãs de São José de Chamberry na província de São Paulo, hoje Estado de São Paulo. A instalação do projeto educacional católico demonstra a ambigüidade da oligarquia paulista que, embora defensora de idéias liberais e positivistas, não hesitou em apoiar a doutrina conservadora do catolicismo ultramontano. A oligarquia brasileira em seu conjunto, apesar de projetar modernizações no âmbito da produção, como, por exemplo, a abolição da escravatura, no âmbito familiar e social temia a modernidade dos costumes e, principalmente, a modernidade no que dizia respeito à educação e profissionalização das mulheres The present article aims to discuss the educational project of the Brazilian Catholic Church, between 1859 and 1919, and its main object of analysis is the installation of the Sisters of San Joseph of Chamberry School in the province of São Paulo - now São Paulo State. The settling of the catholic educational project shows the ambiguity of the São Paulo oligarchy which, in spite of its support to liberal and positivist ideals, did not hesitate in supporting the conservationist doctrine of the ultramontanist Catholicism. The Brazilian oligarchy, as a whole, in spite of planning the modernization of the production, such as, for example, the abolition of slavery, concerning family and society, feared the modernity of habits and, mostly, the modernity which could lead to the education and professionalization of women

İslam öncesi tarihi süreçte bazı istisnai durumların dışında kadın aşağılanan, sosyal ve aile hayatının birçok kademesinde hiçbir zaman erkeğin konumuna yükselemeyen değersiz bir birey olagelimiştir. Son dinin tebliğcisi Hz. Peygamber'in (s.a) gelmesi ile birlikte kadının hak ettiği değere ulaştığını söylemek mümkündür. O, İslamı tüm insanlığa tebliğ etmiş ve asla kadın erkek ayrımı yapmamıştır. Nitekim Hz. Peygamber (s.a) kadının eğitimi, aile ve toplum içersindeki yeri ve konumunu hususunda İslam'ın öğretileri ışığında büyük bir gayret ve ihtimam göstermiştir. Ayrıca Hz. Peygamber (s.a) kadınlarda görmüş olduğu kusurları veya yanlış tutumları en güzel şekilde bertaraf etmiştir. Bunun yanında onların göstermiş oldukları güzel davranışları ve faaliyetleri övmüştür. Hz. Peygamber, (s.a) erkekleri kadınlara davranışları hususunda uyarmış ve onlara yapılan kötü muameleleri şiddetle kınamıştır. Hz. Peygamber (s.a) söylemiş olduğu hadislerle kadın ve erkeğe ortak mesajlar vermiştir. Söylemiş olduğu kadınlarla ilgili hadislerde hem onlara hem de erkeklere eğitsel değerler kazandırma amacında olmuştur. Bütün bunlar göstermektedir ki İslam, kadına insan olma münasebetiyle gerekli değeri vermiştir. Eğitim noktasında ise kadınlara en az erkekler kadar önem verilmiştir. Nitekim kadının anne olması münasebetiyle onun eğitilmesi demek tüm insanlığın eğitilmesi demektir. In pre-Islamic historical period, woman had been a humiliated character, except some exceptional cases. She has also never reached a position as man had in social and family life and she had been considered as an unworthy person. It may only be said that woman acquired her deserved place, together with the arrival of the preacher of the last religion. He preached the Islam to all human being and he never committed the gender discrimination. Hence, he strived and gave weight to the education of women and her place and position in family and community, in the light of Islamic doctrines. He also eliminated, by the most proper way, faults and wrong attitudes that were committed by women. In the meantime, he praised their good attitudes and acts. The Prophet warned men about their attitudes towards women and condemned strongly their bad behaviors. The Prophet gave common messages to women and men in his hadiths. He aimed to give educational values to them by his hadiths concerned with women. All these proofs indicate that Islam gives enough importance to women as a human being. Women have been considered in terms of education at least as much as man because to educate woman means to educate all human being because of her role as a mother. Yaşadıkları dönemin atmosferini; kendilerine özgü, yetenekli, belirgin ve etkileyici bir yazı diliyle yansıtırlar.Kemal Tahir, on dokuz romanını kaleme aldığı süre zarfında, yakından takip ettiği sosyal ve siyasî gelişmeleri kimi zaman eleştirel kimi zaman çözümcü bir şekilde eserlerinde ele almıştır. He also handles the situation of women who are arrested or imprisoned, sometimes feeling pity and sometimes in a criticizing approach for these ?drama lived? members of society.The novelist, aims to handle education system and evaluates the policy followed in education with the presence of Village Institute Schools in the country in his ?Bozkırdaki Çekirdek? book. He claims that these schools don?t attribute much for the education life of the country but they serve for the political aims of the government. Nonetheless, readers rarely come up with much information about education, or the components of education in his works. Especially in his village and prison groups of novels; the society is generally seen with its illiteracy and the misbelief in result. The author, generally gives place for educated people especially in his historical type of books, still the information about education of such characters is not detailed.In Kemal Tahir?s books, from a large variety of social life, very different women figures and the problems they live are described. According to the writer; the main reason for such problems is, the passive role of women they take both in their private and social life. Moreover not giving the deserved value to women in a man dominated society and the general view regarding them as a sexual object are also thought within the reasons of these problems. While reflecting this situation on women in his novels, it is explained by the importance of education for women, through the events and the reactions against the events. 283
