Abstract: 28 p.; This paper presents mathematical modeling and simulation of thin free surface flows of viscoplastic fluids with a Herschel-Bulkley rheology over complex topographies. Using asymptotic expansion method, depthaveraged models (lubrication and Shallow Water type models) are derived for three-dimensional multi-regime flows on non-flat inclined topographies with varying basal conditions. Starting from the reference solutions (zeroth-order ones), flow models are calculated as perturbations of these reference solutions. Two flow regimes corresponding to different balances between shear and pressure forces are presented. The classical flow models in the literature (corresponding to the first regime) are recovered by considering their respective cases on a flat-inclined surface. In the second regime case, a pressure term is non-negligible. Mathematically it leads to a corrective term to the classical regime equations. Using dimensionless parameters, the two regimes flow solutions are compared; the differences appear in the vicinity of sharp changes of slopes. Comparisons of numerical results with dam-break experiments in different geometries are presented for validation.

Abstract: International audience; We exploit the three-dimensional (3D) character of the strain field created around InGaN islands formed within the multilayer structures spaced by a less than 1-nm-thick GaN layer for the creation of spatially correlated electronically coupled quantum dots (QDs). The laterally inhomogeneous vertical out-diffusion of In atoms during growth interruption is the basic mechanism for the formation of InGaN islands within as-deposited 2D layers. An anisotropic 3D strain field created in the first layer is sufficient to justify the vertical correlation of the islands formed in the upper layers spaced by a sufficiently thin GaN layer. When the thickness of a GaN spacer exceeds 1 nm, QDs from different layers under the same growth conditions emit independently and in the same wavelength range. When extremely thin (less than 1 nm), a GaN spacer is formed solely by applying short GI, and a double wavelength emission in the blue and green spectral ranges evidences the electromechanical coupling. With k→·p→ calculations including electromechanical fields, we model the optoelectronic properties of a structure with three InGaN lens-shaped QDs embedded in a GaN matrix, with three different configurations of In content. The profiles of the band structures are strongly dependent on the In content arrangement, and the quantum-confined Stark effect is significantly reduced in a structure with an increasing gradient of In content from the top to the bottom QD. This configuration exhibits carrier tunneling through the QDs, an increase of wave functions overlap, and evidence emerges of three distinct peaks in the spectral range.

Abstract: Let $L$ be a linear differential operator acting on functions defined over an open set $\mathcal{D}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$. In this article, we characterize the measurable second order random fields $U = (U(x))_{x\in\mathcal{D}}$ whose sample paths all verify the partial differential equation (PDE) $L(u) = 0$, solely in terms of their first two moments. When compared to previous similar results, the novelty lies in that the equality $L(u) = 0$ is understood in the sense of distributions, which is a powerful functional analysis framework mostly designed to study linear PDEs. This framework enables to reduce to the minimum the required differentiability assumptions over the first two moments of $(U(x))_{x\in\mathcal{D}}$ as well as over its sample paths in order to make sense of the PDE $L(U_{\omega})=0$. In view of Gaussian process regression (GPR) applications, we show that when $(U(x))_{x\in\mathcal{D}}$ is a Gaussian process (GP), the sample paths of $(U(x))_{x\in\mathcal{D}}$ conditioned on pointwise observations still verify the constraint $L(u)=0$ in the distributional sense. Abstract: We derive quantitative bounds on the rate of convergence in $L^1$ Wasserstein distance of general M-estimators, with an almost sharp (up to a logarithmic term) behavior in the number of observations. We focus on situations where the estimator does not have an explicit expression as a function of the data. The general method may be applied even in situations where the observations are not independent. Our main application is a rate of convergence for cross validation estimation of covariance parameters of Gaussian processes.

Abstract: The estimation of metabolic fluxes in photosynthetic organisms represents an important challenge that has gained interest over the last decade with the development of 13C-Metabolic Flux Analysis at isotopically non-stationary steady-state. This approach requires a high level of accuracy for the measurement of Carbon Isotopologue Distribution in plant metabolites. But this accuracy has still not been evaluated at the isotopologue level for GC-MS, leading to uncertainties for the metabolic fluxes calculated based on these fragments. Here, we developed a workflow to validate the measurements of CIDs from plant metabolites with GC-MS by producing tailor-made E. coli standard extracts harboring a predictable binomial CID for some organic and amino acids. Overall, most of our TMS-derivatives mass fragments were validated with these standards and at natural isotope abundance in plant matrices. Then, we applied this validated MS method to investigate the light/dark regulation of plant TCA cycle by incorporating U-13C-pyruvate to Brassica napus leaf discs. We took advantage of pathway-specific isotopologues/isotopomers observed between two and six hours of labeling to show that the TCA cycle can operate in a cyclic manner under both light and dark conditions. Interestingly, this forward cyclic flux mode has a nearly four-fold higher contribution for pyruvate-to-citrate and pyruvate-to-malate fluxes than the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPc) flux reassimilating carbon derived from some mitochondrial enzymes. The contribution of stored citrate to the mitochondrial TCA cycle activity was also questioned based on dynamics of 13C-enrichment in citrate, glutamate and succinate and variations of citrate total amounts under light and dark conditions. Interestingly, there was a light-dependent 13C-incorporation into glycine and serine showing that decarboxylations from pyruvate dehydrogenase complex and TCA cycle enzymes were actively reassimilated and could represent up to 5% to net photosynthesis.

Abstract: We describe a theoretical proposal of a nanofibre-based trap for a Rb$_2$ molecule prepared in the metastable state $(1)^3\Sigma^+_u$. The trapping potential results from the combination of a travelling and a standing-wave fields, both carried by the fundamental guided mode HE$_{11}$ of the fibre. We show that, with an experimentally realistic choice of laser frequencies and powers, one can implement a $\approx 200$ $\mu$K-deep well at $\approx 140$ nm from the fibre surface accomodating for $\approx 500$ translational molecular states.

Abstract: International audience; Atom-based quantum simulators have had tremendous success in tackling challenging quantum many-body problems, owing to the precise and dynamical control that they provide over the systems' parameters. They are, however, often optimized to address a specific type of problems. Here, we present the design and implementation of a $^6$Li-based quantum gas platform that provides wide-ranging capabilities and is able to address a variety of quantum many-body problems. Our two-chamber architecture relies on a robust and easy-to-implement combination of gray molasses and optical transport from a laser-cooling chamber to a glass cell with excellent optical access. There, we first create unitary Fermi superfluids in a three-dimensional axially symmetric harmonic trap and characterize them using in situ thermometry, reaching temperatures below 20 nK. This allows us to enter the deep superfluid regime with samples of extreme diluteness, where the interparticle spacing is sufficiently large for direct single-atom imaging. Secondly, we generate optical lattice potentials with triangular and honeycomb geometry in which we study diffraction of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates, and show how going beyond the Kapitza-Dirac regime allows us to unambiguously distinguish between the two geometries. With the ability to probe quantum many-body physics in both discrete and continuous space, and its suitability for bulk and single-atom imaging, our setup represents an important step towards achieving a wide-scope quantum simulator.

Abstract: International audience; Industry 4.0 refers to new production methods to meet current societal challenges, notably the improvement of working conditions and the optimization of flows with remote process monitoring. It requires engineering schools to be able to train in new transversal skills. This article presents the experience on international virtual mobility with a Brazilian (UFRJ) and a French (INSA Toulouse) School of Engineering in the area of additive manufacturing. The objective was to develop a collaborative project in distance with a defined technical objective. The project was conducted with weekly meetings during the scheduled classes. An extruder to produce FDM filaments was installed in INSA Toulouse by the French students advised by the Brazilian students, which allowed the production of poly(lactic acid)-PLA/carbon fiber composite filaments. Specimens for mechanical resistance tests and 3D workpieces were designed and FDM printed using the produced filament. The project required multidisciplinary profiles and planning, organizing, and communication skills. As a result, both technical results and educational challenges are presented.

Abstract: International audience; Quantum cloning is a fundamental protocol of quantum information theory. Perfect universal quantum cloning is prohibited by the laws of quantum mechanics, only imperfect copies being reachable. Symmetric quantum cloning is concerned with case when the quality of the clones is identical. In this work, we study the general case of $1 \to N$ asymmetric cloning, where one asks for arbitrary qualities of the clones. We characterize, for all Hilbert space dimensions and number of clones, the set of all possible clone qualities. This set is realized as the nonnegative part of the unit ball of a newly introduced norm, which we call the $\mathcal{Q}$-norm. We also provide a closed form expression for the quantum cloner achieving a given clone quality vector. Our analysis relies on the Schur-Weyl duality and on the study of the spectral properties of partially transposed permutation operators.

Abstract: TREXIO is an open-source file format and library developed for the storage and manipulation of data produced by quantum chemistry calculations. It is designed with the goal of providing a reliable and efficient method of storing and exchanging wave function parameters and matrix elements, making it an important tool for researchers in the field of quantum chemistry. In this work, we present an overview of the TREXIO file format and library. The library consists of a front-end implemented in the C programming language and two different back-ends: a text back-end and a binary back-end utilizing the HDF5 library which enables fast read and write operations. It is compatible with a variety of platforms and has interfaces for the Fortran, Python, and OCaml programming languages. In addition, a suite of tools has been developed to facilitate the use of the TREXIO format and library, including converters for popular quantum chemistry codes and utilities for validating and manipulating data stored in TREXIO files. Abstract: International audience; Scope: High red and processed meat consumption is associated with several adverse outcomes such as colorectal cancer and overall global mortality. However, the underlying mechanisms remain debated and need to be elucidated.Methods and results: Urinary untargeted LC-MS metabolomics data from 240 subjects from the French cohort NutriNet-Santé were analysed. Individuals were matched and divided into 3 groups according to their consumption of red and processed meat: high red and processed meat consumers, non-red and processed meat consumers and an at random group. Results were supported by a preclinical experiment where rats were fed either a high red meat or a control diet. Microbiota derived metabolites, in particular indoxyl sulfate and cinnamoylglycine, were found impacted by the high red meat diet in both studies, suggesting a modification of microbiota by the high red/processed meat diet. Rat microbiota sequencing analysis strengthened this observation. Although not evidenced in the human study, rat mercapturic acid profile concomitantly revealed an increased lipid peroxidation induced by high red meat diet.Conclusion: Novel microbiota metabolites were identified as red meat consumption potential biomarkers, suggesting a deleterious effect, which could partly explain the adverse effects associated with high red and processed meat consumption.

Abstract: We consider a model of an intelligent surfer moving on the Ulam network generated by a chaotic dynamics in the Chirikov standard map. This directed network is obtained by the Ulam method with a division of the phase space in cells of fixed size forming the nodes of a Markov chain. The goal quest for this surfer is to determine the network path from an initial node A to a final node B with minimal resistance given by the sum of inverse transition probabilities. We develop an algorithm for the intelligent surfer that allows to perform the quest in a small number of transitions which grows only logarithmically with the network size. The optimal path search is done on a fractal intersection set formed by nodes with small Erd\"os numbers of the forward and inverted networks. The intelligent surfer exponentially outperforms a naive surfer who tries to minimize its phase space distance to the target B. Abstract: International audience; We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the dissociative ionisation of clusters of pyrene. We measured the experimental appearance energies in the photon energy range 7.2–12.0 eV of the fragments formed from neutral monomer loss for clusters up to the hexamer. The results obtained show a deviation from statistical dissociation. From electronic structure calculations, we suggest that the role of excited states must be considered in the interpretation of experimental results, even in these relatively large systems. Non-statistical effects in the dissociative ionization process of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) clusters may have an impact on the assessment of mechanisms determining the stability of these clusters in astrophysical environments.

Abstract: We report the coupling of dynamic light scattering (DLS) in microfluidics, using a contact-free fibre-optic system, enabling the under-flow characterisation of a range of solutions, dispersions, and structured fluids. The system is evaluated and validated with model systems, specifically micellar and (dilute) polymer solutions, and colloidal dispersions of different radii (∼1-100 nm). A systematic method of flow-DLS analysis is examined as a function of flow velocity (0-16 cm s-1), and considerations of the relative contribution of 'transit' and 'Brownian' terms enable the identification of regions where (i) a quiescent approximation suffices, (ii) the flow-DLS framework holds, as well as (iii) where deviations are found, until eventually (iv) the convection dominates. We investigate practically relevant, robust setups, namely that of a capillary connected to microdevice, as well as direct measurement on a glass microdevice, examining the role of capillary dimensions and challenges of optical alignment. We conclude with a demonstration of a continuous flow measurement of a binary surfactant/salt solution, whose micellar dimensions vary with composition, characterised with hundreds of data points (every ∼5 s) and adequate statistics, within a few minutes.

Abstract: International audience; We consider the controllability of an abstract parabolic system by using switching controls. More precisely, we show that under general hypotheses, if a parabolic system is null-controllable for any positive time with N controls, then it is also null-controllable with the property that at each time, only one of these controls is active. The main difference with previous results in the literature is that we can handle the case where the main operator of the system is not self-adjoint. We give several examples to illustrate our result: coupled heat equations with terms of orders 0 and 1, the Oseen system or the Boussinesq system.

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel algorithm, the Perturbed Proximal Preconditioned SPIDER algorithm (3P-SPIDER), designed to solve finite sum non-convex composite optimization. It is a stochastic Variable Metric Forward-Backward algorithm, which allows approximate preconditioned forward operator and uses a variable metric proximity operator as the backward operator; it also proposes a mini-batch strategy with variance reduction to address the finite sum setting. We show that 3P-SPIDER extends some Stochastic preconditioned Gradient Descent-based algorithms and some Incremental Expectation Maximization algorithms to composite optimization and to the case the forward operator can not be computed in closed form. We also provide an explicit control of convergence in expectation of 3P-SPIDER, and study its complexity in order to satisfy the epsilon-approximate stationary condition. Our results are the first to combine the composite non-convex optimization setting, a variance reduction technique to tackle the finite sum setting by using a minibatch strategy and, to allow deterministic or random approximations of the preconditioned forward operator. Finally, through an application to inference in a logistic regression model with random effects, we numerically compare 3P-SPIDER to other stochastic forward-backward algorithms and discuss the role of some design parameters of 3P-SPIDER., Statistics and Computing, In press

Abstract: International audience; Aeronautics for military or civil applications effectively pushed scientists, engineers and industrial leaders to invent and produce increasingly efficient materials. Aluminium alloys are among the most important strategic materials used in aircraft manufacturing. Consequently, so are the protective coatings (primers and paints). After decades of burial, World War II (WWII) wrecks provide a tremendous amount of archaeological information on this period of intense technological research. In this article, the original protective coatings of ten samples collected on WWII wrecks and one collection aircraft were studied. Information was retrieved thanks to a multi-techniques approach: SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy and XRD to identify the nature of the mineral compounds (fillers and pigments) and FTIR, Py-GC-MS and NMR to identify the organic binders of the paints and primers. This information will help conserve this valuable 20 th century Industrial Heritage.

Abstract: A detailed modeling of N$_2^+$ transport properties in helium gas has been performed by employing Monte Carlo calculations based on ab initio collision cross-sections reported by our group in a preceding paper (S Paláček et al 2022 Plasma Sources Sci. Technol. 31 105004). A broad range of the reduced electric field ($E/N$) is considered to provide data directly usable in macroscopic modeling of processes in cold helium plasmas. The N$_2^+$ mobility in helium gas at room temperature (T = 300 K), the characteristic energies of its longitudinal and transversal diffusion, and the rate constant of the N$_2^+$ dissociation induced by collisions with helium atoms have been calculated. The effect of the N$_2^+$ initial rotational-vibrational excitation is investigated as well as the effect of the rotational alignment of the N$_2^+$ molecule. A direct comparison with N$_2^+$/He mobility experimental data is performed as well as indirect tests of theoretical estimates of the characteristic diffusion energies by comparing the latter with pseudo-experimental data obtained from mobility experiments via an inverse-method approach

Abstract: Assessing non-negativity of multivariate polynomials over the reals, through the computation of {\em certificates of non-negativity}, is a topical issue in polynomial optimization. This is usually tackled through the computation of {\em sums-of-squares decompositions} which rely on efficient numerical solvers for semi-definite programming. This method faces two difficulties. The first one is that the certificates obtained this way are {\em approximate} and then non-exact. The second one is due to the fact that not all non-negative polynomials are sums-of-squares. In this paper, we build on previous works by Parrilo, Nie, Demmel and Sturmfels who introduced certificates of non-negativity modulo {\em gradient ideals}. We prove that, actually, such certificates can be obtained {\em exactly}, over the rationals if the polynomial under consideration has rational coefficients and we provide {\em exact} algorithms to compute them. We analyze the bit complexity of these algorithms and deduce bit size bounds of such certificates., Comment: 24 pages, 2 tables

Abstract: International audience; We review the history of the self-gravitating Fermi gas in Newtonian gravity and general relativity. We mention applications to white dwarfs, neutron stars and dark matter halos. We describe the nature of instabilities and phase transitions in the self-gravitating Fermi gas as energy (microcanonical ensemble) or temperature (canonical ensemble) is reduced. When $NN_{\rm OV}$, a new turning point appears at an energy $E"_c$ below which the system experiences a gravitational collapse towards a black hole [P.H. Chavanis, G. Alberti, Phys. Lett. B 801, 135155 (2020)]. When $N_{\rm OV}N'_*$, the condensed branch disappears and the instability at $E_c$ directly leads to a black hole. We discuss implications of these results for dark matter halos made of massive neutrinos.

Abstract: The family of Green's function methods based on the $GW$ approximation has gained popularity in the electronic structure theory thanks to its accuracy in weakly correlated systems combined with its cost-effectiveness. Despite this, self-consistent versions still pose challenges in terms of convergence. A recent study \href{https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0089317}{[J. Chem. Phys. 156, 231101 (2022)]} has linked these convergence issues to the intruder-state problem. In this work, a perturbative analysis of the similarity renormalization group (SRG) approach is performed on Green's function methods. The SRG formalism enables us to derive, from first principles, the expression of a naturally static and Hermitian form of the self-energy that can be employed in quasiparticle self-consistent $GW$ (qs$GW$) calculations. The resulting SRG-based regularized self-energy significantly accelerates the convergence of qs$GW$ calculations, slightly improves the overall accuracy, and is straightforward to implement in existing code., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures (supporting information available)

Abstract: International audience; Microalgae are a promising resource for biofuel production, although the lack of effective harvesting techniques limits their industrial use. In this context, flotation, and in particular dissolved air flotation (DAF), is an interesting separation technique that could drastically reduce harvesting costs and make biofuel-production systems more economically viable. But because of the repulsive interaction between cells and bubbles in water, the efficiency of this technique can be limited. To solve this problem, we propose here an original DAF process where bubbles are functionalized with a bio-sourced polymer able to specifically bind to the surface of cells, chitosan. In a first part, we modify chitosan by adding hydrophobic groups on its backbone to obtain an amphiphilic molecule, PO-chitosan, able to assemble at the surface of bubbles. Then, using a recently developed technique based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) combined with microfluidics, we probe the interactions between PO-chitosan coated bubbles and cells at the molecular scale; results show an enhanced adhesion of functionalized bubbles to cells (from 3.5 to 12.8 nN) that is pH-dependent. Separation efficiencies obtained in flotation experiments with functionalized bubbles are in line with AFM data, and a microalgae separation efficiency of approximately 60% could be reached in a single step. In addition, we also found that PO-chitosan could be used efficiently as a flocculant (nearly 100% of cells removed), and in this case AFM experiments revealed that the flocculation mechanism is based on hydrophobic interactions between cells and PO-chitosan. Altogether, this comprehensive study shows the interest of PO-chitosan to harvest cells in flotation or flocculation/flotation processes.

Abstract: International audience; In this report, a catalytic enhanced-conventional process production background was employed to determine the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly techniques to improve the catalytic production of toluene and other aromatic compounds from propane aromatization. 2 wt% of zinc was co-impregnated with 1–3 wt% of cobalt on HZSM-5. Characterizations and analysis showed that catalysts are crystalline and microporous. Propane conversion was carried out at 540 °C, 1200 ml/g-h gas hourly space velocity and atmospheric pressure over Zn–Co/ZSM-5 bimetallic catalysts. Toluene selectivity in the aromatic products was greatly improved and sustained significantly together with other aromatic products. Catalytic conversion of propane and aromatic yield over Zn–Co/ZSM-5 was improved and stabilized due to metallic collaboration on HZSM-5. Aromatic yield averaged 46, 32, and 36%, respectively, for 1–3 wt% Co in Zn–Co/ZSM-5 bimetallic catalyst. Average toluene selectivity in the aromatic products for 12 h time on stream from 60, 50 and 51% for 1–3 wt% Co loading. The threshold loading of cobalt with zinc was 2% above which the general aromatic selectivity declined. A decrease in conversion from 73 to 15% was observed for flowrate increase from 6 to 35 ml min−1 and an increase in aromatic selectivity from 80 to 87%. An increase in temperature of 500–560 °C increased catalytic performance, 32–47% for propane conversion, and 79–86% aromatic selectivity.

Abstract: The sampling of the configuration space in diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) is done using walkers moving randomly. In a previous work on the Hubbard model [\href{https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.60.2299}{Assaraf et al.~Phys.~Rev.~B \textbf{60}, 2299 (1999)}], it was shown that the probability for a walker to stay a certain amount of time in the same state obeys a Poisson law and that the on-state dynamics can be integrated out exactly, leading to an effective dynamics connecting only different states. Here, we extend this idea to the general case of a walker trapped within domains of arbitrary shape and size. The equations of the resulting effective stochastic dynamics are derived. The larger the average (trapping) time spent by the walker within the domains, the greater the reduction in statistical fluctuations. A numerical application to the Hubbard model is presented. Although this work presents the method for finite linear spaces, it can be generalized without fundamental difficulties to continuous configuration spaces., 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: International audience; By introducing electron screening in the extended Koopmans' theorem we correctly describe the band gap opening in weakly as well as strongly correlated systems. We show this by applying our method to bulk LiH, Si, and paramagnetic as well as antiferromagnetic NiO. Although incorrect features remain in the full photoemission spectra, this is a remarkable result for an ab-initio electronic structure method and it opens the way to a unified description of photoemission spectra at weak and strong correlation.

Abstract: In this work, we develop a mathematical framework for a Selected Configuration Interaction (SCI) algorithm within a bi-orthogonal basis for transcorrelated (TC) calculations. The bi-orthogonal basis used here serves as the equivalent of the standard Hartree Fock (HF) orbitals. However, within the context of TC, it leads to distinct orbitals for the left and right vectors. Our findings indicate that the use of such a bi-orthogonal basis allows for a proper definition of the frozen core approximation. In contrast, the use of HF orbitals results in bad error cancellations for ionization potentials and atomization energies (AE). Compared to HF orbitals, the optimized bi-orthogonal basis significantly reduces the positive part of the second-order energy (PT2), thereby facilitating the use of standard extrapolation techniques of hermitian SCI. While we did not observe a significant improvement in the convergence of the SCI algorithm, this is largely due to the use in the present work of a simple three-body correlation factor introduced in a recent study. This correlation factor, which depends only on atomic parameters, eliminates the need for re-optimization of the correlation factor for molecular systems, making its use straightforward and user-friendly. Despite the simplicity of this correlation factor, we were able to achieve accurate results on the AE of a series of 14 molecules in a triple-zeta basis. We also successfully broke a double bond until the full dissociation limit while maintaining the size consistency property. This work thus demonstrates the potential of the BiO-TC-SCI approach in handling complex molecular systems.

Abstract: International audience; Methods to follow in real time complex processes occurring along living cell membranes such as cell permeabilization are rare. Here, the terahertz spectroscopy reveals early events in plasma membrane alteration generated during photodynamic therapy (PDT) protocol, events which are not observable in any other conventional biological techniques performed in parallel as comparison. Photodynamic process is examined in Madin-Darby canine kidney cells using Pheophorbide (Pheo) photosensitizer alone or alternatively encapsulated in poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(ε-caprolactone) micelles for drug delivery purpose. Terahertz spectroscopy (THz) reveals that plasma membrane permeabilization starts simultaneously with illumination and is stronger when photosensitizer is encapsulated. In parallel, the exchange of biological species is assessed. Over several hours, this conventional approach demonstrates significant differences between free and encapsulated Pheo, the latter leading to high penetration of propidium iodide, Na+ and Ca2+ ions, and a high level of leakage of K+, ATP, and lactate dehydrogenase. THz spectroscopy provides, in a single measurement, the relative number of defects per membrane surface created after PDT, which is not achieved by any other method, providing early, sensitive real-time information. THz spectroscopy is therefore a promising technique and can be applied to any biological topic requiring the examination of short-term plasma membrane permeabilization.

Abstract: International audience; We establish in this paper the logarithmic Bramson correction for Fisher-KPP equations on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}$. The level sets of solutions with step-like initial conditions are located at position $c_*t-\frac{3}{2\lambda_*}\ln t+\mathcal{O}(1)$ as $t\rightarrow+\infty$ for some explicit positive constants $c_*$ and $\lambda_*$. This extends a well-known result of Bramson in the continuous setting to the discrete case using only PDE arguments. A by-product of our analysis also gives that the solutions approach the family of logarithmically shifted traveling front solutions with minimal wave speed $c_*$ uniformly on the positive integers, and that the solutions converge along their level sets to the minimal traveling front for large times.

Abstract: The collective behavior of animals has been traditionally studied through observation, quantitative models of behavior, and devices of low intelligence. Nowadays, the advancements in the field of robotics allow for closed-loop experiments that occur in real-time, and for artificial agents that intelligently and autonomously blend into hybrid groups of animals and robots (i.e., biohybrid groups). Such systems provide scientists with the opportunity to study the social interactions that govern collective behavior from within the group of animals, either by mimicking them or by introducing precise stimuli to elicit and study their response. In this work, we introduce an open source Biohybrid Observation and Interaction (BOBI) platform for small animals, which consists of 3 main components: 1) an experimental setup; 2) a wheeled mobile robot called LureBot; 3) their software. We demonstrate the software and hardware design aspects that make BOBI stand out compared to our previous system and similarly purposed systems. Finally, we demonstrate our methodologies and the new robot’s agility, by conducting a set of preliminary experiments with rummy-nose tetra (Hemigrammus rhodostomus) fish, where we study: 1) the response of one fish swimming with a biomimetic and a non-biomimetic lure; 2) the robot behavior when the robot interacts biomimetically and in closed loop with the wall alone, with 1 fish, and with 4 fish. The experiments show that fish strongly prefer biomimetic lures, and that the robot is consistently successful in engaging in social interactions with the fish.

Abstract: International audience; Bell's inequality violation experiments are becoming increasingly popular in the practical teaching of undergraduate and master's degree students. Bell's parameter S is obtained from 16 polarization correlation measurements performed on entangled photons pairs. We first report here a detailed analysis of the uncertainty u(S) of Bell's parameter taking into account coincidence count statistics and errors in polarizers' orientation. We show using both computational modeling and experimental measurement that the actual sequence of the polarizer settings has an unexpected and strong influence on the error budget. This result may also be relevant to measurements in other settings in which errors in parameters may have non-random effects in the measurement.

Abstract: We derive an approximate analytical expression of the maximum mass of relativistic self-gravitating Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive or attractive $|\varphi|^4$ self-interaction. This expression interpolates between the general relativistic maximum mass of noninteracting bosons stars, the general relativistic maximum mass of bosons stars with a repulsive self-interaction in the Thomas-Fermi limit, and the Newtonian maximum mass of dilute axion stars with an attractive self-interaction [P.H. Chavanis, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 84}, 043531 (2011)]. We obtain the general structure of our formula from simple considerations and determine the numerical coefficients in order to recover the exact asymptotic expressions of the maximum mass in particular limits. As a result, our formula should provide a relevant approximation of the maximum mass of relativistic boson stars for any value (positive and negative) of the self-interaction parameter. We discuss the evolution of the system above the maximum mass and consider application of our results to dark matter halos and inflaton clusters. Abstract: International audience; Metabolome profiling in biological fluids is an interesting approach for exploring markers of methane emissions in ruminants. In this study, a multiplatform metabolomics approach was used for investigating changes in milk metabolic profiles related to methanogenesis in dairy cows. For this purpose, 25 primiparous Holstein cows at similar lactation stage were fed the same diet supplemented with (treated, n = 12) or without (control, n = 13) a specific antimethanogenic additive that reduced enteric methane production by 23% with no changes in intake, milk production, and health status. The study lasted 6 wk, with sampling and measures performed in wk 5 and 6. Milk samples were analyzed using 4 complementary analytical methods, including 2 untargeted (nuclear magnetic resonance and liquid chromatography coupled to a quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer) and 2 targeted (liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and gas chromatography coupled to a flame ionization detector) approaches. After filtration, variable selection and normalization data from each analytical platform were then analyzed using multivariate orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis. All 4 analytical methods were able to differentiate cows from treated and control groups. Overall, 38 discriminant metabolites were identified, which affected 10 metabolic pathways including methane metabolism. Some of these metabolites such as dimethylsulfoxide, dimethylsulfone, and citramalic acid, detected by nuclear magnetic resonance or liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods, originated from the rumen microbiota or had a microbial-host animal co-metabolism that could be associated with methanogenesis. Also, discriminant milk fatty acids detected by targeted gas chromatography were mostly of ruminal microbial origin. Other metabolites and metabolic pathways significantly affected were associated with AA metabolism. These findings provide new insight on the potential role of milk metabolites as indicators of enteric methane modifications in dairy cows.

Abstract: This paper presents a deep neural network called DIVA unfolding a baseline adaptive denoising algorithm (De-QuIP), relying on the theory of quantum many-body physics. Furthermore, it is shown that with very slight modifications, this network can be enhanced to solve more challenging image restoration tasks such as image deblurring, super-resolution and inpainting. Despite a compact and interpretable (from a physical perspective) architecture, the proposed deep learning network outperforms several recent algorithms from the literature, designed specifically for each task. Abstract: Application of nanocomposites in daily life requires not only small nanoparticles (NPs) well dispersed in a matrix, but also a manufacturing process that is mindful of the operator and the environment. Avoiding any exposure to NPs is one such way, and direct liquid reaction-injection (DLRI) aims to fulfill this need. DLRI is based on the controlled in situ synthesis of NPs from the decomposition of suitable organometallic precursors in conditions that are compatible with a pulsed injection mode of an aerosol into a downstream process. Coupled with low-pressure plasma, DLRI produces nanocomposite with homogeneously well-dispersed small nanoparticles that in the particular case of ZnO-DLC nanocomposite exhibit unique properties. DLRI favorably compares with the direct liquid injection of ex situ formed NPs. The exothermic hydrolysis reaction of the organometallic precursor at the droplet-gas interface leads to the injection of small and highly dispersed NPs and, consequently, the deposition of fine and controlled distribution in the nanocomposite. The scope of DLRI nanosynthesis has been extended to several metal oxides such as zinc, tin, tungsten, and copper to generalize the concept. Hence, DLRI is an attractive method to synthesize, inject, and deposit nanoparticles and meets the prevention and atom economy requirements of green chemistry.

Abstract: We consider a system of linear oscillators, or quantum states, described by Random Matrix Theory and analyze how its time evolution is affected by a nonlinear perturbation. Our numerical results show that above a certain chaos border a weak or moderate nonlinearity leads to a dynamical thermalization of a finite number of degrees of freedom with energy equipartition over linear eigenmodes as expected from the laws of classical statistical mechanics. The system temperature is shown to change in a broad range from positive to negative values and the dependence of system characteristics on the initial injected energy is determined. Below the chaos border the dynamics is described by the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser integrability. The format of the paper is that of a roundtable discussion, in which the participants express and exchange views on DFT in the form of 300 individual contributions, formulated as responses to a preset list of 26 questions. Supported by a bibliography of 776 entries, the paper represents a broad snapshot of DFT, anno 2022.

Abstract: The field of quantum simulation aims at emulating complex quantum systems on platforms that are easier to control and observe. In the last twenty years, ultracold atoms in optical lattices have established themselves as a versatile controllable system for quantum simulation. The three experimental studies presented in this manuscript take place in the development of this field. They are performed using Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a one-dimensional optical lattice that can be precisely controlled in amplitude and phase. In the first study, we use the optimal control formalism to compute the way in which to continuously shift the lattice in order to arbitrarily shape the BEC distribution in the phase space of the system. We apply this method to different targets, among which squeezed Gaussian states more than four times narrower in position than the ground state of the system, as well as the ideal Floquet state superposition to perform quantum simulation of dynamical tunneling is the modulated lattice. The second study concerns the realization of a non-diffusive Hamiltonian ratchet. The ratchet effect consists in the emergence of a directed current of particles in a system with no net force. In this second work, we correlate the amplitude and phase modulations of the lattice to produce, in the phase space of the system, a region of non-chaotic trajectories that travels between lattice sites, resting periodically in the center of each sites. We experimentally implement this system and observe non-diffusive ratchet transport of matter waves in the optical lattice. Finally, we show how short-range interactions between atoms in the BECs lead to the emergence of a supercrystalline order in a sinusoidally modulated optical lattice for a modulation frequency coupling two energy levels. We develop a two-band tight-binding model which predicts that collisions occuring between the atoms of the BECs can lead to the growth of unstable Bogoliubov modes in the vicinity of avoided crossings in the quasi-energy spectrum of the modulated system. Interestingly, we experimentally demonstrate that the periodicity of the emergent order can be tuned through Floquet engineering of these crossings.; Le domaine de la simulation quantique vise à émuler des systèmes quantiques complexes sur des systèmes plus simples à observer et à contrôler. Ces vingt dernières années, les gaz d’atomes ultrafroids sur réseau optique se sont démarqués comme une plateforme versatile et contrôlable pour la simulation quantique. Les trois études expérimentales présentées dans ce manuscrit s’inscrivent dans le développement de ce domaine. Elles sont réalisées avec des condensats de Bose-Einstein (CBE) placés dans un réseau optique unidimensionnel dont on peut contrôler finement la phase et l’amplitude. Dans la première étude, nous utilisons le formalisme du contrôle optimal pour calculer la phase variable que doit avoir le réseau optique au cours du temps afin de préparer des distributions arbitraires de CBE dans l’espace des phases du système. Avec cette méthode, nous réalisons différents états, parmi lesquels des états gaussiens jusqu’à quatre fois plus comprimés en position que l’état fondamental du réseau optique, ou encore la superposition idéale d’états de Floquet pour faire une simulation quantique d’effet tunnel dynamique dans le réseau optique modulé. La deuxième étude traite d’un effet ratchet (rochet) non-diffusif dans un système hamiltonien. L’effet ratchet est l’émergence d’un courant de particules dans un potentiel duquel aucune force nette n’est dérivée. Dans ce travail, nous corrélons les modulations d’amplitude et de phase du réseau afin de faire émerger, dans l’espace des phases du système, une région de trajectoires non-chaotiques qui transite d’un site au suivant en s’arrêtant périodiquement au centre du site. Nous réalisons expérimentalement ce système et observons le transport ratchet non-diffusif d’ondes de matière dans le réseau optique. La dernière étude présentée dans cette thèse démontre comment, dans un réseau optique modulé sinusoı̈dalement à une fréquence couplant deux bandes du système, les interactions à courte-portée entre atomes du CBE peuvent entraîner l’émergence d’un ordre supercristallin. Nous développons un modèle de bandes fortement liées à deux niveaux prédisant que les collisions interatomiques dans le CBE peuvent mener à la croissance de modes instables de Bogoliubov situés à proximité des croisements évités dans le spectre de quasi-énergie du système modulé. Notamment, nous montrons expérimentalement comment la périodicité de cet ordre émergent peut être accordée en procédant à l’ingénierie de Floquet de ces croisements.

Abstract: Today, more than ever, mobile robots and drones are roaming human workspaces. In particular, mobile robots are being deployed in many places, from airports to restaurants to streets. In a classical motion planning setting, everything is an obstacle, and the robot has to avoid all the obstacles and reach its destination. However, this cannot be directly employed in robot navigation planning in human environments. Humans may not be comfortable seeing a robot move very close to them or not knowing if the robot is ready to give them the way or not. Unless the humans are considered in navigation planning, the robot can confuse the humans and may not be accepted to be around them. Hence a new field of robot navigation concentrating on these aspects, called ‘Human-Aware Robot Navigation (HAN) (or Social Robot Navigation)’, is evolving at a rapid pace these days. This work explores HAN in the case of mobile robots and proposes some new factors and systems that can make a robot more ‘human aware’. The core idea behind this work is that the robot has to avoid or mitigate uncomfortable human-robot interactions that occur during the navigation. So, we explore situation assessment and proactive planning in HAN to plan legible and acceptable trajectories for the robot in the first part of the thesis. It was also shown how proactive planning could be a better alternative to reactive planning for HAN. We also introduce some new human-robot social constraints and a new human path prediction methodology. The proposed system has been validated under several settings, and a detailed analysis is presented. The next part elaborates on this idea and moves on to propose a HAN system that can handle static and dynamic humans under several circumstances. We propose a HAN system based on the ROS navigation stack to address the problem of multi-context navigation. This system is highly tunable and has a modality switching mechanism that allows the robot to mitigate several human-robot interaction settings. We introduce some more human-aware constraints pertaining to social norms to make the robot’s navigation vivid. Finally, it has been tested in several simulated and real-world scenarios and analyses are provided. When compared with an already existing HAN system, our system yielded better and more satisfactory results both qualitatively and quantitatively. Even though this system can handle more than one kind of scenario with visible humans, it cannot address the sudden human appearances or prepare the robot ready for such occurrences. So, in the next part of the thesis, a methodology to detect such possible appearances is proposed. These estimations are then integrated with the previous proposed HAN system to allow the robot to manoeuvre around the places of such possible emergences cautiously. The proposed algorithm has been extensively tested, and the advantages of this addition are shown through several experiments. Throughout the development of this thesis, the evaluation of the HAN system has been a challenge as there are no good enough and well accepted metrics currently. Therefore, we have used some existing ones and proposed some new metrics that could be pertinent to many human-robot contexts. The last part of this thesis presents these proposed metrics and their evaluations in different settings. Finally, we conclude this thesis with a discussion on the current state of the field, the challenges faced during the development of this thesis and the future perspectives.; Aujourd'hui, plus que jamais, des robots mobiles et des drones parcourent les espaces de travail et de vie des humains. En particulier, les robots mobiles sont déployés ou en voie de déploiement dans de nombreux endroits, des aéroports aux restaurants en passant par les rues. Dans un cadre classique de planification du mouvement, tout est obstacle que le robot doit éviter pour atteindre sa destination. Cependant, cette approche ne peut pas être directement utilisée pour la navigation des robots dans les environnements humains. Les humains peuvent ne pas être à l'aise de voir un robot se déplacer très près d'eux ou de ne pas savoir si le robot est prêt à leur céder le passage ou non. Si les humains ne sont pas pris en compte de manière explicite dans la planification de la navigation, le robot peut les perturber et ne pas être accepté. Ainsi, un nouveau domaine de la navigation robotique se concentrant sur ces aspects, appelé `Human-Aware Robot Navigation (HAN) (ou Social Robot Navigation)', se développe rapidement de nos jours. Ce travail explore l'approche HAN dans le cas des robots mobiles et propose quelques nouveaux facteurs et systèmes qui peuvent rendre un robot plus acceptable par les humains. L'idée centrale de ce travail est que le robot doit éviter ou atténuer les interactions homme-robot inconfortables qui se produisent pendant la navigation. Ainsi, dans la première partie de la thèse, nous explorons l'évaluation de situation et la planification proactive dans HAN pour planifier des trajectoires de robot lisibles et acceptables. Nous introduisons également de nouvelles contraintes sociales homme-robot et une nouvelle méthode de prédiction de la trajectoire des humains au voisinage du robot. Le système proposé a été validé dans plusieurs contextes, et une analyse détaillée en est présentée. La partie suivante développe cette idée et propose un système HAN qui peut gérer des humains aussi bien statiques qu'en mouvement dans plusieurs circonstances. Nous proposons un système HAN basé sur la pile de navigation ROS pour résoudre le problème de la navigation multi-contexte. Ce système est hautement ajustable et possède un mécanisme de changement de modalité qui permet au robot d'adapter, en fonction du contexte, plusieurs paramètres d'interaction homme-robot. Nous introduisons des contraintes plus sensibles à l'homme concernant les normes sociales pour rendre la navigation du robot plus vive et réactive. Enfin, le système a été testé dans plusieurs scénarios simulés et réels et des analyses en sont fournies. Comparé à un système HAN déjà existant, notre système a donné des résultats meilleurs et plus satisfaisants tant sur le plan qualitatif que quantitatif. Bien que ce système puisse gérer plus d'un type de scénario avec des humains visibles par le robot, il ne peut pas traiter les apparitions soudaines d'humains ou préparer le robot à de telles occurrences. Ainsi, dans une partie suivante de la thèse, une méthodologie pour détecter de telles apparitions potentielles est proposée. Ces estimations sont ensuite intégrées au système HAN proposé précédemment afin de permettre au robot de manœuvrer avec précaution autour des lieux de ces possibles apparitions. L'algorithme proposé a été largement testé, et les avantages de cet ajout sont démontrés par plusieurs expériences. Tout au long du développement de cette thèse, l'évaluation du système HAN a été un défi car il n'existe pas de métriques suffisamment bonnes et acceptée par la communauté. Par conséquent, nous avons utilisé certaines métriques existantes et en avons proposé de nouvelles qui pourraient être pertinentes dans de nombreux contextes humains-robots. La dernière partie de cette thèse présente ces nouvelles métriques et leur évaluation dans différents contextes. Enfin, nous concluons cette thèse par une discussion sur l'état actuel du domaine, les défis rencontrés au cours du développement de cette thèse et les perspectives futures.

Abstract: International audience; In the nanomedicine field, there is a need to widen the availability of nanovectors to compensate for the increasingly reported side effects of poly(ethene glycol). Nanovectors enabling cross-linking can further optimize drug delivery. Cross-linkable polyoxazolines are therefore relevant candidates to address these two points. Here we present the synthesis of coumarin-functionalized poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) block copolymers, namely, poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline)-block-poly(2-phenyl-2-oxazoline) and poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline)-block-poly(2-butyl-2-oxazoline). The hydrophilic ratio and molecular weights were varied in order to obtain a range of possible behaviors. Their self-assembly after nanoprecipitation or film rehydration was examined. The resulting nano-objects were fully characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cryo-TEM, multiple-angle dynamic and static light scattering. In most cases, the formation of polymer micelles was observed, as well as, in some cases, aggregates, which made characterization more difficult. Cross-linking was performed under UV illumination in the presence of a coumarin-bearing cross-linker based on polymethacrylate derivatives. Addition of the photo-cross-linker and cross-linking resulted in better-defined objects with improved stability in most cases.

Abstract: National audience; Interpretable Machine Learning models receive growing interest due to the increasing concerns in understanding the reasoning behind some crucial decisions made by modern Artificial Intelligent systems. Due to their structure, especially with small sizes, these interpretable models are inherently understandable for humans. Compared to classical heuristic methods to learn these models, recent exact methods offer more compact models or better prediction quality. In this thesis, we propose two novel exact methods via Maximum Boolean Satisfiability (MaxSAT) to learn optimal interpretable machine learning models.Our contribution starts with an original MaxSAT-based exact method to learnoptimal decision trees. This method optimizes the empirical accuracy to avoidoverfitting and also enriches the constraints to restrict the tree depth. Additionally,we integrate this MaxSAT-based method in AdaBoost, which is a classical Boostingmethod to improve the generalization performance. The experimental results showthe competitive prediction quality of this MaxSAT-based method compared to state-of-the-art heuristics and other exact methods. Additionally, clear improvements inprediction performance are observed after the integration in AdaBoost.Our second contribution is an original MaxSAT-based exact method to optimize binary decision diagrams. We introduce an initial Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) encoding to model binary decision diagrams in limited depth with perfect empirical accuracy. Next, we present how to adapt the SAT-based model into MaxSAT approach. Finally, we present a pre-processing for selecting some important features to increase the scalability of our MaxSAT-based method to optimize binary decision diagrams. The experimental results show clear advances of our MaxSAT-based method in prediction quality, compared to state-of-the-art heuristic methods. We also observe a huge shrink in encoding size and model size in comparison between our approach and state-of-the-art exact method without losing the prediction performance. In addition, great reductions in encoding size are displayed after the application of pre-processing, which boosts the scalability.; Les modèles d’apprentissage interprétables reçoivent un intérêt croissant en raisonde l’augmentation des préoccupations pour comprendre le raisonnement menantaux décisions cruciales prises par les systèmes modernes d’intelligence artificielle.En raison de leur structure, en particulier pour des petites tailles, ces modèlesinterprétables sont intrinsèquement compréhensibles pour les humains. Par rapportaux méthodes heuristiques classiques pour apprendre ces modèles, les méthodesexactes récentes offrent des modèles plus compacts ou atteingnent une meilleurequalité de prédiction. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons deux nouvelles méthodesexactes basées sur la Satisfiabilité Booléenne Maximale (MaxSAT) pour apprendredes modèles d’apprentissage interprétables optimaux.Notre contribution commence par une méthode exacte originale basée sur MaxSATpour apprendre des arbres de décision optimaux. Cette méthode optimise la précision empirique pour éviter le surapprentissage et prend également en compte des contraintes pour restreindre la profondeur de l’arbre. De plus, nous intégrons cette méthode basée sur MaxSAT à la méthode AdaBoost, qui est une méthode standard de Boosting pour améliorer les performances de généralisation. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent une qualité de prédiction compétitive de cette méthode basée sur MaxSAT par rapport à des méthodes heuristiques et exactes de l’état de l’art. En plus, des améliorations des performances de prédiction sont observées après intégration dans AdaBoost.Notre deuxième contribution est une méthode exacte originalebasée sur MaxSAT pour optimiser les diagrammes de décision binaire. Nous introduisons tout d’abord un encodage de Satisfiabilité Booléenne (SAT) pour modéliser des diagrammes de décision binaire de profondeur limitée avec une parfaite précision. Puis, nous présentons comment adapter le modèle en Satisfiabilité Booléenne Maximale. Finalement, nous présentons un pré-traitement pour la sélection de certaines caractéristiques importantes afin d’augmenter le passage à l’échelle de notre méthode MaxSAT pour optimiser les diagrammes de décision binaire. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent des avancées de notre méthode MaxSAT sur la qualité de prédiction, par rapport aux méthodes heuristiques. Nous observons également une réduction importante sur la taille d’encodage et la taille du modèle dans les comparaisons entre notre approche et une méthode exacte de l’état de l’art, sans perdre en performance de prédiction. De plus, une grande réduction sur la taille d’encodage est mise en évidence après application du pré-traitement, ce qui renforce le passage à l’échelle.

Abstract: L-homoserine is a pivotal intermediate in the carbon and nitrogen metabolism of E. coli. However, this non-canonical amino acid cannot be used as a nitrogen source for growth. Furthermore, growth of this bacterium in a synthetic media is potently inhibited by L-homoserine. To understand this dual effect, an adapted laboratory evolution (ALE) was applied, which allowed the isolation of a strain able to grow with L-homoserine as the nitrogen source and was, at the same time, desensitized to growth inhibition by this amino acid. Sequencing of this evolved strain identified only four genomic modifications, including a 49 bp truncation starting from the stop codon of thrL. This mutation resulted in a modified thrL locus carrying a thrL* allele encoding a polypeptide 9 amino acids longer than the thrL encoded leader peptide. Remarkably, the replacement of thrL with thrL* in the original strain MG1655 alleviated L-homoserine inhibition to the same extent as strain 4E, but did not allow growth with this amino acid as a nitrogen source. The loss of L-homoserine toxic effect could be explained by the rapid conversion of L-homoserine into threonine via the thrL*-dependent transcriptional activation of the threonine operon thrABC. On the other hand, the growth of E. coli on a mineral medium with L-homoserine required an activation of the threonine degradation pathway II and glycine cleavage system, resulting in the release of ammonium ions that were likely recaptured by NAD(P)-dependent glutamate dehydrogenase. To infer about the direct molecular targets of L-homoserine toxicity, a transcriptomic analysis of wild-type MG1655 in the presence of 10 mM L-homoserine was performed, which notably identified a potent repression of locomotion-motility-chemotaxis process and of branched-chain amino acids synthesis. Since the magnitude of these effects was lower in a ΔthrL mutant, concomitant with a twofold lower sensitivity of this mutant to L-homoserine, it could be argued that growth inhibition by L-homoserine is due to the repression of these biological processes. In addition, L-homoserine induced a strong upregulation of genes in the sulfate reductive assimilation pathway, including those encoding its transport. How this non-canonical amino acid triggers these transcriptomic changes is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; $CoFe_2O_4$ and $NiFe_2O_4$ are well-known insulating and ferrimagnetic spinel ferrites with high Curie temperatures, an important characteristic for electronic and spintronic applications. We used first-principles calculations to investigate how their electronic and magnetic properties can be altered or tuned by the presence of structural point defects. We considered successively the effects of cation distribution in the spinel lattice for stoichiometric compounds and of atom substitutions or vacancies. Our calculations demonstrate that a deviation from the perfectly inverse distribution of cations increases the magnetization and decreases the width of the band gap at the Fermi level. In contrast to cation vacancies, oxygen vacancies are not expected to strongly affect the magnetization. We show that $NiFe_2O_4$ crystals with an excess of Ni cations can display a spin-polarized hole conductivity. We finally calculated the formation energy of the different defects and we give details on their gap states.

Abstract: Background Metabolic adaptation is a hallmark of cancer including acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Tumor microenvironment is also described as an essential support of leukemic metabolism. We explored how systemic and tissue metabolism was rewired in leukemia-bearing mice and upon chemotherapy. Methods Using AML cell line- and primary patient-derived xenograft models, we developed in vivo metabolomics to uncover the metabolic pattern of 10 tissues including plasma, bone marrow, spleen, liver, adipose tissue, lung, pancreas, kidney, heart and muscle. Results In vivo targeted mass spectrometry allowed metabolic characterization of tissues from naïve and AML-xenografted immunocompromised mice. AML xenotransplantation and cytarabine treatment induced AML cell type-dependent global changes in tissue metabolomes. Infiltration of high OxPHOS MOLM14 cells that are intrinsically chemoresistant, induced minor changes in tissue metabolomes. In contrast, low OxPHOS U937 xenograft led to major reprogramming of metabolic tissue niches for survival upon chemotherapy. Interestingly, plasma metabolite signatures could predict the oxidative phenotype of leukemic cells. Conclusion Major metabolic changes in host tissues play a crucial role in tumor xenotransplantation and define their OxPHOS state in AML. Since mitochondrial phenotype is an essential determinant of drug response in AML, plasma metabolite signatures might be novel biomarkers for patient stratification.

Abstract: We report on magneto-optical studies of the quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet FePS$_3$. Our measurements reveal an excitation that closely resembles the antiferromagnetic resonance mode typical of easy-axis antiferromagnets, nevertheless, it displays an unusual, four-times larger Zeeman splitting in an applied magnetic field. We identify this excitation with an $|S_z|=4$ multipolar magnon -- a single-ion 4-magnon bound state -- that corresponds to a full reversal of a single magnetic moment of the Fe$^{2+}$ ion. We argue that condensation of multipolar magnons in large-spin materials with a strong magnetic anisotropy can produce new exotic states., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures + supplement

Abstract: Background Plant floral nectars contain natural sugars such as fructose, which are a primary energy resource for adult mosquitoes. Despite the importance of carbohydrates for mosquito metabolism, a limited knowledge is available about the pathways involved in sugar assimilation by mosquitoes and their associated microbiota. To this end, we used 13C-metabolomic and stable isotope probing approaches coupled to high-throughput sequencing to reveal fructose-related mosquito metabolic pathways and the dynamics of the active gut microbiota following fructose ingestion. Results Our results revealed significant differences in metabolic pathways between males and females, highlighting different modes of central carbon metabolism regulation. Competitive and synergistic interactions of diverse fungal taxa were identified within the active mycobiota following fructose ingestion. In addition, we identified potential cross-feeding interactions between this. Interestingly, there is a strong correlation between several active fungal taxa and the presence of fructose-derived metabolites. Conclusions Altogether, our results provide novel insights into mosquito carbohydrate metabolism and demonstrate that dietary fructose as it relates to mosquito sex is an important determinant of mosquito metabolism; our results also further highlight the key role of active mycobiota interactions in regulating the process of fructose assimilation in mosquitoes. This study opens new avenues for future research on mosquito-microbiota trophic interactions related to plant nectar-derived sugars. Graphical Abstract

Abstract: Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) allows lateral edge epitaxy of transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures. Critical for carrier and exciton transport is the material quality and the nature of the lateral heterojunction. Important details of the optical properties were inaccessible in as-grown heterostructure samples due to large inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. Here we perform optical spectroscopy of CVD grown MoSe2-WSe2 lateral heterostructures, encapsulated in hBN. Photoluminescence (PL), reflectance contrast and Raman spectroscopy reveal optical transition linewidths similar to high quality exfoliated monolayers, while PL imaging experiments uncover the effective excitonic diffusion length of both materials. The typical extent of the covalently bonded MoSe2-WSe2 heterojunctions is 3 nm measured by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Tip-enhanced, sub-wavelength optical spectroscopy mapping shows the high quality of the heterojunction which acts as an excitonic diode resulting in unidirectional exciton transfer from WSe2 to MoSe2.

Abstract: International audience; A detailed insight behind the structure of absorption bands of the photochromic couple dimethyldihydropyrene (DHP)/metacyclophanediene (CPD) is studied employing vibronic coupling theory. Two separate model molecular Hamiltonians, including a maximum of four electronic states and 18 vibrational modes for DHP and five electronic states and 20 vibrational modes for CPD, are constructed in a diabatic electronic representation. The parameters of the Hamiltonians are estimated from the electronic energies obtained from extensive density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. Based on these Hamiltonians’ parameters, a detailed analysis of potential energy curves is performed in conjunction with positional and energetic locations of several stationary points in multi-dimensional potential energy surfaces. Based on the results of electronic structure calculations, quantum nuclear dynamics studies on the electronic excited states of DHP and CPD are performed to understand the impact of non-adiabatic effects on the formation of vibronic structures of absorption bands of these photo-isomers.
