Handwriting recognition systems usually rely on static dictionaries and language models. Full coverage of these dictionaries is generally not achieved when dealing with unrestricted document corpora due to the presence of Out-Of-Vocabulary (OOV) words. We propose an approach which uses the World Wide Web as a corpus to improve dictionary coverage. We exploit the very large and freely available Wikipedia corpus in order to obtain dynamic dictionaries on the fly. We rely on recurrent neural network (RNN) recognizers, with and without linguistic resources, to detect words that are non-reliably recognized within a word sequence. Such words are labeled as non-anchor words (NAWs) and include OOVs and In-Vocabulary words recognized with low confidence. To recognize a non-anchor word, a dynamic dictionary is built by selecting words from the Web resource based on their string similarity with the NAW image, and their linguistic relevance in the NAW context. Similarity is evaluated by computing the edit distance between the sequence of characters generated by the RNN recognizer exploited as a filler model, and the Wikipedia words. Linguistic relevance is based on an N-gram language model estimated from the Wikipedia corpus. Experiments conducted on a word-segmented version of the publicly available RIMES database show that the proposed approach can improve recognition accuracy compared to systems based on static dictionaries only. Learning is becoming increasingly self-directed and often occurs away from schools and other formal educational settings. The development of a myriad of new technologies for learning has enabled people to learn anywhere and anytime. Web 2.0 technology allows researchers to shed a new light on the importance and prevalence of informal learning. However, there are few empirical studies that support the claim that this technology facilitates informal learning. The present study investigates the relationship between Web 2.0 levels and the evaluation of informal learning websites. For this purpose, 287 informal learning websites were selected and their Web 2.0 levels were rated based upon eight criteria proposed in the Web 2.0 exploratory literature. In addition, previously examined informal learning evaluation results were employed. The results showed that current informal learning websites have moderately adopted the most heavily promoted features of Web 2.0. Correlation analyses showed a positive relationship between Web 2.0 features and informal learning website ratings. Natural Language Generation (NLG) is concerned with transforming given content input into a natural language output, given some communicative goal. Although this input can take various forms and representations, it is the semantic/conceptual representations that have always been considered as the 'natural' starting ground for NLG. Therefore, it is natural that the Semantic Web (SW), with its machine-processable representation of information with explicitly defined semantics, has attracted the interest of NLG practitioners from early on. We attempt to provide an overview of the main paradigms of NLG from SW data, emphasizing how the Semantic Web provides opportunities for the NLG community to improve their state-of-the-art approaches whilst bringing about challenges that need to be addressed before we can speak of a real symbiosis between NLG and the Semantic Web. The web-based, Java-written SOCR (Statistical Online Computational Resource) toolshave been utilized in many undergraduate and graduate level statistics courses for sevenyears now (Dinov 2006; Dinov et al. 2008b). It has been proven that these resourcescan successfully improve students' learning (Dinov et al. 2008b). Being rst publishedonline in 2005, SOCR Analyses is a somewhat new component and it concentrate on datamodeling for both parametric and non-parametric data analyses with graphical modeldiagnostics. One of the main purposes of SOCR Analyses is to facilitate statistical learn-ing for high school and undergraduate students. As we have already implemented SOCRDistributions and Experiments, SOCR Analyses and Charts fulll the rest of a standardstatistics curricula. Currently, there are four core components of SOCR Analyses. Linearmodels included in SOCR Analyses are simple linear regression, multiple linear regression,one-way and two-way ANOVA. Tests for sample comparisons include t-test in the para-metric category. Some examples of SOCR Analyses' in the non-parametric category areWilcoxon rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Friedman's test, Kolmogorov-Smirno testand Fligner-Killeen test. Hypothesis testing models include contingency table, Friedman'stest and Fisher's exact test. The last component of Analyses is a utility for computingsample sizes for normal distribution. In this article, we present the design framework,computational implementation and the utilization of SOCR Analyses.

In this study, the purpose is to investigate the information use pattern of library resources and related issues among undergraduate (U.G) students of Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT) at Chennai. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed but 120 were returned duly filled in. A structured questionnaire was designed for collecting data from the chosen sample group. The study covers the students undergoing their first year of engineering education from four departments and the study was limited to students from Rajalakshmi Institute of Technology (RIT), in Chennai. We examined and found that 97.5% of students were using library for study activities while 2.5% do not feel so. 65.83 % of students were using the text books as the most consulted source whereas 34.17 % were using Lecture Notes, Central Library and other sources. Majority (95.0%) of students were aware of search engines, while only 5.0% do not know what it means. 91.67% of students have opined that 'Google & Yahoo' are the most sought after search engines they have used. Also, the results indicated that the library and its resources can be expected to be used by the coming day generations and they are eager to learn everything. The study was aimed at identifying the needs and the level of awareness of the student community on networks such as internet and the like. A study based on the same topic among various colleges and universities and comparative study can be carried out. The Web allows self-navigated education through interaction with large amounts of Web resources. While enjoying the flexibility of Web tools, authors may suffer from research and filtering Web resources, when they face various resources formats and complex structures. An adaptation of extracted Web resources must be assured by authors, to give reliability, satisfaction of learners and content quality of E-learning platform. This study has proposed Fusion of Web resources approach to this problem and organized resources to an Adaptive Learning Domain into E-learning platform. The focus was firstly, on searching tools and filtering methods to extract the most relevant educational Web resources and structuring them to create courses, secondly, on adaptation of extracted Web resources. Our approach explores a new process of fusion in creation and in adaptation to learner's profiles. That approach doesn't need much time and many efforts which can be taken and done by authors to create courses. It also finds direct way to Web resources which are needed, and the update of courses that can be done directly from the Web with the reuse of extracted resources. Evidence-based interventions (EBIs) are not broadly implemented, despite widespread availability of programs, policies, and guidelines. Systematic processes for integrating EBIs with community preference remain challenging for cancer control and prevention, as well as other areas. The Cancer Control P.L.A.N.E.T. (P.L.A.N.E.T) Web portal provides a platform to access data, EBIs, and resources to foster local partnerships and assist public health researchers and practitioners design, implement, and evaluate evidence-based cancer control programs. This article summarizes the evolution of P.L.A.N.E.T. and describes effective and innovative Web 2.0 strategies to increase Web visits, create more interactive platforms for researchers and practitioners to integrate evidence-based resources, community preferences, and the complex context in which programs and policies are implemented. Lessons learned could benefit public health settings and reach low-income, high-risk communities. Researchers, community practitioners, and government partnerships should continue to develop and test innovative ways to address pressing issues in cancer control, health disparities, and health delivery. The current progress of information technology, the more and more frequent use of new technologies in all domains of activity, the fact that the computer is part of pupil's everyday life, has determined us to introduce a multimedia course in the training curriculum for future teachers of French. This course has as objective to make the students aware of all the multimedia materials available on the internet and all the possibilities of using them within the French lessons. In our paper, we will present the objectives and the contents of this course, as well as the results of this didactical experience. This course has been organized in three unequal parts: a) teaching students how to use the technical means, especially the computer, with the principles and modalities of browsing the internet (if necessary); b) knowing the most important sites from a technical and methodological point of view, as well as those regarding multimedia elements; c) students' creating of a sample lesson based only on the exercises and materials found on the internet, which is the most consistent part of this activity. The explored sites are divided, according to the addresses, into two types: sites for training teachers and sites which contain materials (exercises, games, songs, authentic video documents, etc.) that can be used during the French lessons. All these activities are associated with brainstorming and discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of such lessons and about the role of the teacher during these lessons, given the fact that the multimedia exercises available on the internet are interactive and very frequently overtake the teacher's role when it comes to feedback in pupils' learning process. In April 2007, the University of Washington Libraries debuted WorldCat Local (WCL), a localized version of the WorldCat database that interoperates with a library's integrated library system and fulfillment services to provide a single-search interface for a library's physical and electronic content. This brief will describe how WCL incorporates a library's existing e-resource access methods into its interface and also discusses additional e-resource access services that are not typically found in the library catalog. The majority of online newspapers provide access to retrospective information through press archive services, a product of great interest for libraries and other information services. The aim of this study is to identify key indicators for the evaluation of digital press archives and also identify examples of good practices in Spain for each of them. We propose a list of twenty-seven indicators grouped into four main sections (general features, contents, query system, and presentation of results), describe each one and include some examples of successful implementation. Methodologically, the indicators are the result of the review of the literature on evaluating web resources, databases and digital press archives, as well as the analysis of press archive services of newspapers from Spain and Catalonia. Due to the fragile characteristics of digital information, this study aims to address strategic, methodological and practical issues in archiving and managing digital preservation. Because the webpage may be described with the HTML edition and version, the support of the browser and long-term preservation must be considered, including standardization, format, data utilization, mining and restructured employment in the future. Based on these requirements, the main purpose of this study is analysis in probing the solution for long-term preservation of web resources; adopting the standardized method; and analyzing composition components and characteristics of web resources according to the perspective of the data structure. This study adopted the migration method to reorganize the structure but keep primitive information of web resources according to the Topic Maps metadata, in order to offer web resources integrity, management and application effectively with the whole information content. The purpose of this paper is to propose an evaluation method for measuring the quality of World Wide web reference resources (dictionaries and encyclopaedias) that Library of University of León make available through its Digital Library under the heading of "Resources on the internet". The project, undertaken by the Library Working Group on Electronic Resources, consists on evaluating all web resources included in each of the mentioned categories in order to determine their suitability. The results obtained after the quality assessment, will help us to select, among the list of proposals submitted at the beginning, those electronic reference resources that are more useful for the university community members, discarding those which fail to achieve the scoring proposed and recommending other that fulfill the parameters outlined. The aim of this paper is to reflect on sign language learning (as a first language to the Deaf or as a second language to the hearing) through virtual learning environments. Integration of ICT appears to be the latest trend among sign language classes. Numerous Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) material and websites constitute resources for sign language teachers and learners, since they are containing video or/and animating material accessible free of cost and vice versa and therefore, they can be used as teaching/learning tools in the classroom. Especially, the shift to Internet creates an environment suitable to learner's pace of learning a sign language. The classroom is more learner-centered, whereby learners learn the language at their speed, thereby having the control over the learning process. Tutors, on the other hand, play the role of the facilitator, who decides about the resources available to learners and consults them how to proceed with the material in order to learn the language. Accordingly, the computer can mediate the interaction between the learner and the tutor when they are spatially dispersed. Search engines’ capabilities are improved continually for enhancing the retrieved results and satisfying users’ needs. Despite the great efforts in the information retrieval field, the user spends long time in changing the search keywords; though the retrieved results may be out of user’s expectation. This may be due to the huge number of web resources, the lack of search keywords for specific domains, and the gap between the user and author in specific domain. This paper proposes a model for improving the search engines capabilities through adding level of awareness to the web resources. The model targets the human view about web resources in addition to author perception. This is through automatically extraction of the user’s perceptions and mapping them to the resources’ based on semantic aspects. The experimental studies realized 36% precision improvement compared to other search engines, and user satisfaction was up to 92%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Library staff created an online tutorial and resource Web page for Docutek electronic reserve (electronic reserve software) users at Philadelphia University. Created as part of a larger training initiative revision conducted by the Instructional Technology Specialist, the online resource supports a faculty-driven model of electronic reserve usage. Additionally, the revised training initiative places an emphasis on rising electronic reserve and BlackBoard as complementary tools better serving the educational needs of faculty and students. Library and Archives Canada (LAC) has capitalized on the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) potential for organizing Web resources in two projects. Since 1995, LAC has been providing a service that offers links to authoritative Web resources about Canada categorized according to the DDC via its Web site. More recently, LAC has partnered with the federal government Department of Canadian Heritage to manage Web Content related to Canadian culture in a DDC-based subject tree. The international ImMunoGeneTics information system® (IMGT; http://imgt.cines.fr), is a high quality integrated information system specialized in immunoglobulins (IG), T cell receptors (TR), major histocompatibility complex (MHC), and related proteins of the immune system (RPI) of human and other vertebrates, created in 1989, by the Laboratoire d’ImmunoGe´ne´tique Mole´culaire (LIGM; Universite´ Montpellier II and CNRS) at Montpellier, France. IMGT provides a common access to standardized data which include nucleotide and protein sequences, oligonucleotide primers, gene maps, genetic polymorphisms, specificities, 2D and 3D structures. The development of a set of subject specific resources by the Health Sciences Library (HSL), University at Buffalo (UB) to support the miniMedical School Program (MMS) lectures offered by UB's School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is detailed. A brief background of the MMS phenomenon is given. An Internet scan of miniMedical School Web sites to assess linkage to medical library resources was performed, and future improvements in the relationship between UB's MMS and HSL in terms of assessment, development of Web resources, and instructional support is discussed.
