We introduce an innovative specimen preparation method employing the selectivity of a wet-chemical etching step to improve data quality and success rates in the atom probe analysis of contemporary semiconductor devices. Firstly, on the example of an SiGe fin embedded in SiO 2 we demonstrate how the selective removal of SiO 2 from the final APT specimen significantly improves accuracy and reliability of the reconstructed data. With the oxide removal, we eliminate the origin of shape artefacts, i.e. the formation of a non-hemispherical tip shape, that are typically observed in the reconstructed volume of complex systems. Secondly, using the same approach, we increase success rates to ∼90% for the damage-free, 3D site-specific localization of short (250 nm), vertical Si nanowires at the specimen apex. The impact of the abrupt emitter radius change that is introduced by this specimen preparation method is evaluated as being minor using field evaporation simulation and comparison of different reconstruction schemes. The Ge content within the SiGe fin as well as the 3D boron distribution in the Si NW as resolved by atom probe analysis are in good agreement with TEM/EDS and ToF-SIMS analysis, respectively., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. In this work we present the fabrication and characterization of a diamond film which can be utilized in the construction of optical sensors for the investigation of biological samples. We produced a nitrogen-doped diamond (NDD) film using a microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MWPECVD) system. The NDD film was investigated with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectroscopy. The NDD film was used in the construction of the fiber optic sensor. This sensor is based on the Fabry-Pérot interferometer working in a reflective mode and the NDD film is utilized as a reflective layer of this interferometer. Application of the NDD film allowed us to obtain the sensor of hemoglobin concentration with linear work characteristics with a correlation coefficient (R²) equal to 0.988., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Controlling the molecular organization of organic self-assembled monolayers (SAM) is of utmost importance in nanotechnology, molecular electronics, and surface science. Here we propose two well-differentiated approaches, double printing based on microcontact printing (μ-cp) and molecular backfilling adsorption, to produce complex alkanethiol films. The resulting films on model Au surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle measurements. Double printing alkanethiols results in clear coexisting regions where no molecular displacement is observed, highlighting the slow diffusion rates of long alkanethiols and large attractive interaction between long alkyl chains. Exposing a single-print μ-cp Au substrate to an additional alkanethiol solution yields the formation of differently ordered domain boundaries with different thickness and micrometer lateral size. The high order is a result of enhanced molecular mobility and restructuring during solution backfilling. The formed molecular assemblies constitute an excellent testing ground for nanoscale phenomena that strongly depend on the nanoscale geometrical and chemical features of the surface such as designed functionality or corrosion initiation and inhibition.

Nanoporous gold (np-Au) is a nanostructured metal with many desirable attributes. Despite the growing number of applications of nanoporous materials, there are still open questions regarding their fabrication and subsequent surface functionalization. For example, the hydrophobic nature of gold surfaces makes the formation of planar supported lipid layers challenging. Here, the authors engineer the interface between np-Au and 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine lipid layers using well-differentiated approaches based on vesicle adsorption and solvent exchange methods. The results reveal that the nanotopography of the np-Au surface plays a clear role in the vesicle adsorption process. Compared to vesicle adsorption, the solvent exchange method proves successful in the formation of planar supported lipid bilayers in both np-Au and planar Au surfaces, being less sensitive to the surface morphological features. The influence of nanostructured surfaces on lipid layer formation is determined by the driving mechanisms behind each process, i.e., the balance of adhesion and cohesion forces in vesicle adsorption and lyotropic lipid phase transitions in solvent exchange, respectively. A better understanding of such interactions will contribute to the development of a variety of applications, from electrochemical biosensors to drug screening and delivery systems, using nanoporous gold coated with stimuli-responsive lipid layers.

Silver (Ag) ions are implanted in ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) films to enhance the electron field emission (EFE) properties, resulting in low turn-on field of 8.5 V/μm with high EFE current density of 6.2 mA/cm 2 (at an applied field of 20.5 V/μm). Detailed nanoscale investigation by atomic force microscopy based peak force-controlled tunneling atomic force microscopy (PF-TUNA) and ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) based current imaging tunneling spectroscopy (CITS) reveal that the UNCD grain boundaries are the preferred electron emission sites. The two scanning probe microscopic results supplement each other well. However, the PF-TUNA measurement is found to be better for explaining the local electron emission behavior than the STM-based CITS technique. The formation of Ag nanoparticles induced abundant sp 2 nanographitic phases along the grain boundaries facilitate the easy transport of electrons and is believed to be a prime factor in enhancing the conductivity/EFE properties of UNCD films. The nanoscale understanding on the origin of electron emission sites in Ag-ion implanted/annealed UNCD films using the scanning probe microscopic techniques will certainly help in developing high-brightness electron sources for flat-panel displays applications.

Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter that plays a major role in the pathogenesis of a variety of conditions, including psychiatric disorders. The detection of serotonin typically relies on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), an expensive technique that requires sophisticated equipment and trained personnel, and is not suitable for point-of-care applications. In this contribution, we introduce a novel sensor platform that can measure spiked neurotransmitter concentrations in whole blood samples in a fast and low-cost manner by combining synthetic receptors with a thermal readout technique-the heat-transfer method. In addition, the design of a miniaturized version of the sensing platform is presented that aims to bridge the gap between measurements in a laboratory setting and point-of-care measurements. This fully automated and integrated, user-friendly design features a capillary pumping unit that is compatible with point-of-care sampling techniques such as a blood lancet device (sample volume-between 50 µL and 300 µL). Sample pre-treatment is limited to the addition of an anti-coagulant. With this fully integrated setup, it is possible to successfully discriminate serotonin from a competitor neurotransmitter (histamine) in whole blood samples. This is the first demonstration of a point-of-care ready device based on synthetic receptors for the screening of neurotransmitters in complex matrices, illustrating the sensor's potential application in clinical research and diagnosis of e.g., early stage depression., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

In searching for alternative oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for acidic water splitting, fast screening of the material intrinsic activity and stability in half-cell tests is of vital importance. The screening process significantly accelerates the discovery of new promising materials without the need of time-consuming real-cell analysis. In commonly employed tests, a conclusion on the catalyst stability is drawn solely on the basis of electrochemical data, for example, by evaluating potential-versus-time profiles. Herein important limitations of such approaches, which are related to the degradation of the backing electrode material, are demonstrated. State-of-the-art Ir-black powder is investigated for OER activity and for dissolution as a function of the backing electrode material. Even at very short time intervals materials like glassy carbon passivate, increasing the contact resistance and concealing the degradation phenomena of the electrocatalyst itself. Alternative backing electrodes like gold and boron-doped diamond show better stability and are thus recommended for short accelerated aging investigations. The key steps of a transfer of two-dimensional (2D) materials are the delamination of the as-grown material from a growth substrate and the lamination of the 2D material on a target substrate. In state-of-the-art transfer experiments, these steps remain very challenging, and transfer variations often result in unreliable 2D material properties. Here, it is demonstrated that interfacial water can insert between graphene and its growth substrate despite the hydrophobic behavior of graphene. It is understood that interfacial water is essential for an electrochemistry-based graphene delamination from a Pt surface. Additionally, the lamination of graphene to a target wafer is hindered by intercalation effects, which can even result in graphene delamination from the target wafer. For circumvention of these issues, a direct, support-free graphene transfer process is demonstrated, which relies on the formation of interfacial water between graphene and its growth surface, while avoiding water intercalation between graphene and the target wafer by using hydrophobic silane layers on the target wafer. The proposed direct graphene transfer also avoids polymer contamination (no temporary support layer) and eliminates the need for etching of the catalyst metal. Therefore, recycling of the growth template becomes feasible. The proposed transfer process might even open the door for the suggested atomic-scale interlocking-toy-brick-based stacking of different 2D materials, which will enable a more reliable fabrication of van der Waals heterostructure-based devices and applications.

By ultrasonic spray deposition of precursors, conformal deposition on 3D surfaces of tungsten oxide (WO₃) negative electrode and amorphous lithium lanthanum titanium oxide (LLT) solid-electrolyte has been achieved as well as an all-solid-state half-cell. Electrochemical activity was achieved of the WO₃ layers, annealed at temperatures of 500 °C. Galvanostatic measurements show a volumetric capacity (415 mAh·cm -3 ) of the deposited electrode material. In addition, electrochemical activity was shown for half-cells, created by coating WO₃ with LLT as the solid-state electrolyte. The electron blocking properties of the LLT solid-electrolyte was shown by ferrocene reduction. 3D depositions were done on various micro-sized Si template structures, showing fully covering coatings of both WO₃ and LLT. Finally, the thermal budget required for WO₃ layer deposition was minimized, which enabled attaining active WO₃ on 3D TiN/Si micro-cylinders. We present atom probe analysis of 40nm wide SiGe fins embedded in SiO 2 and discuss the root cause of artefacts observed in the reconstructed data. Additionally, we propose a simple data treatment routine, relying on complementary transmission electron microscopy analysis, to improve compositional analysis of the embedded SiGe fins. Using field evaporation simulations, we show that for high oxide to fin width ratios the difference in evaporation field thresholds between SiGe and SiO 2 results in a non-hemispherical emitter shape with a negative curvature in the direction across, but not along the fin. This peculiar emitter shape leads to severe local variations in radius and hence in magnification across the emitter apex causing ion trajectory aberrations and crossings. As shown by our experiments and simulations, this translates into unrealistic variations in the detected atom densities and faulty dimensions in the reconstructed volume, with the width of the fin being up to six-fold compressed. Integration of electronic circuit components onto flexible materials such as plastic foils, paper and textiles is a key challenge for the development of future smart applications. Therefore, conductive metal features need to be deposited on temperature sensitive substrates in a fast and straightforward way. The feasibility of these emerging (nano-) electronic technologies depends on the availability of well-designed deposition techniques and on novel functional metal inks. As ultrasonic spray coating (USSC) is one of the most promising techniques to meet the above requirements, innovative metal organic decomposition (MOD) inks are designed to deposit silver features on plastic foils. Various amine ligands were screened and their influence on the ink stability and the characteristics of the resulting metal depositions were evaluated to determine the optimal formulation. Eventually, silver layers with excellent performance in terms of conductivity (15% bulk silver conductivity), stability, morphology and adhesion could be obtained, while operating in a very low temperature window of 70 °C-120 °C. Moreover, the optimal deposition conditions were determined via an in-depth analysis of the ultrasonically sprayed silver layers. Applying these tailored MOD inks, the USSC technique enabled smooth, semi-transparent silver layers with a tunable thickness on large areas without time-consuming additional sintering steps after deposition. Therefore, this novel combination of nanoparticle-free Ag-inks and the USSC process holds promise for high throughput deposition of highly conductive silver features on heat sensitive substrates and even 3D objects.

Chemogenomics data generally refers to the activity data of chemical compounds on an array of protein targets and represents an important source of information for building in silico target prediction models. The increasing volume of chemogenomics data offers exciting opportunities to build models based on Big Data. Preparing a high quality data set is a vital step in realizing this goal and this work aims to compile such a comprehensive chemogenomics dataset. This dataset comprises over 70 million SAR data points from publicly available databases (PubChem and ChEMBL) including structure, target information and activity annotations. Our aspiration is to create a useful chemogenomics resource reflecting industry-scale data not only for building predictive models of in silico polypharmacology and off-target effects but also for the validation of cheminformatics approaches in general.

Few-layer graphene (FLG) was catalytically formed on vertically aligned diamond nanorods (DNRs) by a high temperature annealing process. The presence of 4-5 layers of FLG on DNRs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopic studies. It enhances the field electron emission (FEE) behavior of the DNRs. The FLG-DNRs show excellent FEE characteristics with a low turn-on field of 4.21 V μm -1 and a large field enhancement factor of 3480. Moreover, using FLG-DNRs as cathode markedly enhances the plasma illumination behavior of a microplasma device, viz not only the plasma current density is increased, but also the robustness of the devices is improved.

The identification, fine-tuning, and process optimization of appropriate hole transporting layers (HTLs) for organic solar cells is indispensable for the production of efficient and sustainable functional devices. In this study, the optimization of a solution-processed molybdenum oxide (MoOx) layer fabricated from a combustion precursor is carried out via the introduction of zirconium and tin additives. The evaluation of the output characteristics of both organic photovoltaic (OPV) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices demonstrates the beneficial influence upon the addition of the Zr and Sn ions compared to the generic MoOx precursor. A dopant effect in which the heteroatoms and the molybdenum oxide form a chemical identity with fundamentally different structural properties could not be observed, as the additives do not affect the molybdenum oxide composition or electronic band structure. An improved surface roughness due to a reduced crystallinity was found to be a key parameter leading to the superior performance of the devices employing modified HTLs.

Highly ordered nanopatterns are obtained at sub-5 nm periodicities by the graphoepitaxial directed self-assembly of monodisperse, oligo(dimethylsiloxane) liquid crystals. Introduction: During maximal, sustained contractions, persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) show higher motor fatigability in comparison with healthy persons. It is not known if motor fatigability is also different between PwMS and healthy persons during low-intensity exercises. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the difference in hand grip fatigability between healthy persons and PwMS for both hands during low-intensity hand grip exercises., Methods: 19 PwMS and 19 healthy controls performed 18min of hand grip exercises at a maximum of 25% of the maximal voluntary strength, with an electronic hand dynamometer. Perceived fatigability, maximal hand grip strength and muscle activity (electromyography) of the wrist flexors and extensors were recorded in between these exercises for the dominant and non-dominant hand., Results and Discussion: There was a significant decrease in maximal hand grip strength after exercising in both groups and for both hands, mainly situated in the first 6min. In contrast to what was hypothesized, PwMS did not show more decline in strength than healthy controls, neither in the dominant nor the non-dominant hand. There was no group difference in the increase of the perceived fatigability in the dominant hand. However, for the non-dominant hand, the perceived fatigability after exercising increased more in PwMS than in healthy controls. Nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) membranes are promising candidates for use as sensitive pressure sensors. NCD membranes are able to withstand harsh conditions and are easily fabricated on glass. In this study the sensitivity of heavily boron doped NCD (B:NCD) pressure sensors is evaluated with respect to different types of supporting glass substrates, doping levels and membrane sizes. Higher pressure sensing sensitivities are obtained for membranes on Corning Eagle 2000 glass, which have a better match in thermal expansion coefficient with diamond compared to those on Schott AF45 glass. In addition, it is shown that larger and more heavily doped membranes are more sensitive. After fabrication of the membranes, the stress in the B:NCD films is released by the emergence of wrinkles. A better match between the thermal expansion coefficient of the NCD layer and the underlying substrate results in less stress and a smaller amount of wrinkles as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and 3D surface imaging.

Despite the environmentally friendly reputation of ionic liquids (ILs), their safety has been recently questioned given their potential as cytotoxic agents. The fundamental mechanisms underlying the interactions between ILs and cells are less studied and by far not completely understood. Biomimetic films are here important biophysical model systems to elucidate fundamental aspects and mechanisms relevant for a large range of biological interaction ranging from signaling to drug reception or toxicity. Here we use dissipative quartz crystal microbalance QCM-D to examine the effect of aqueous imidazolium-based ionic liquid mixtures on solid-supported biomimetic membranes. Specifically, we assess in real time the effect of the cation chain length and the anion nature on a supported vesicle layer of the model phospholipid DMPC. Results indicate that interactions are mainly driven by the hydrophobic components of the IL, which significantly distort the layer and promote vesicle rupture. Our analyses evidence the gradual decrease of the main phase transition temperature upon increasing IL concentration, reflecting increased disorder by weakening of lipid chain interactions. The degree of rupture is significant for ILs with long hydrophobic cation chains and large hydrophobic anions whose behavior is reminiscent of that of antimicrobial peptides., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Field electron emission (FEE) properties of vertically aligned hexagonal boron nitride nanowalls (hBNNWs) grown on Si have been markedly enhanced through the use of nitrogen doped nanocrystalline diamond (nNCD) films as an interlayer. The FEE properties of hBNNWs-nNCD heterostructures show a low turn-on field of 15.2 V/μm, a high FEE current density of 1.48 mA/cm(2) and life-time up to a period of 248 min. These values are far superior to those for hBNNWs grown on Si substrates without the nNCD interlayer, which have a turn-on field of 46.6 V/μm with 0.21 mA/cm(2) FEE current density and life-time of 27 min. Cross-sectional TEM investigation reveals that the utilization of the diamond interlayer circumvented the formation of amorphous boron nitride prior to the growth of hexagonal boron nitride. Moreover, incorporation of carbon in hBNNWs improves the conductivity of hBNNWs. Such a unique combination of materials results in efficient electron transport crossing nNCD-to-hBNNWs interface and inside the hBNNWs that results in enhanced field emission of electrons. The prospective application of these materials is manifested by plasma illumination measurements with lower threshold voltage (370 V) and longer life-time, authorizing the role of hBNNWs-nNCD heterostructures in the enhancement of electron emission.

Using modern wide-angle atom probes, it is possible to acquire atomic scale 3D data containing 1000 s of nm(2) of interfaces. It is therefore possible to probe the distribution of segregated species across these interfaces. Here, we present techniques that allow the production of models for interfacial excess (IE) mapping and discuss the underlying considerations and sampling statistics. We also show, how the same principles can be used to achieve thickness mapping of thin films. We demonstrate the effectiveness on example applications, including the analysis of segregation to a phase boundary in stainless steel, segregation to a metal-ceramic interface and the assessment of thickness variations of the gate oxide in a fin-FET., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Over the last three decades, phage display technology has been used for the display of target-specific biomarkers, peptides, antibodies, etc. Phage display-based assays are mostly limited to the phage ELISA, which is notorious for its high background signal and laborious methodology. These problems have been recently overcome by designing a dual-display phage with two different end functionalities, namely, streptavidin (STV)-binding protein at one end and a rheumatoid arthritis-specific autoantigenic target at the other end. Using this dual-display phage, a much higher sensitivity in screening specificities of autoantibodies in complex serum sample has been detected compared to single-display phage system on phage ELISA. Herein, we aimed to develop a novel, rapid, and sensitive dual-display phage to detect autoantibodies presence in serum samples using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring as a sensing platform. The vertical functionalization of the phage over the STV-modified surfaces resulted in clear frequency and dissipation shifts revealing a well-defined viscoelastic signature. Screening for autoantibodies using antihuman IgG-modified surfaces and the dual-display phage with STV magnetic bead complexes allowed to isolate the target entities from complex mixtures and to achieve a large response as compared to negative control samples. This novel dual-display strategy can be a potential alternative to the time consuming phage ELISA protocols for the qualitative analysis of serum autoantibodies and can be taken as a departure point to ultimately achieve a point of care diagnostic system.

The interest in solid-supported biomimetic membranes stems from their utility in nanotechnology and biosensing. In particular, supported lipid vesicles (SLVs) have become popular in both fundamental biophysical studies and pharmaceutical screening applications. It is thus essential to gain information on the structural properties and phase behavior of SLVs. Here we report on a study on the influence of cholesterol on the phase behavior of SLVs of saturated phospholipids by using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, a label-free and nonintrusive surface-sensitive technique. Two complementary approaches have been used, a Voigt-based viscoelastic model yielding shear viscosity temperature profiles and the first-order derivative of the frequency (mass-sensitive) shifts. Anomalies in the shear viscosity and extrema in the first-order derivative frequency curves stand as a token of the main phase transition and provide information on its gradual suppression upon addition of cholesterol. This method proves convenient for its small sample volume needed, its short temperature equilibration time and the non-necessity of external labels. This work can be regarded as a starting point for further studies on more rare lipid systems and different geometries, such as tethered SLVs or biologically relevant vesicles produced by living cells.

In this work we examine the role of lateral phase separation in cholesterol-containing biomimetic membranes on the disrupting action of melittin using a label-free surface-sensitive technique, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). Melittin disruption mechanisms depend strongly on the geometry of the lipid layer; however, despite the interplay between layer geometry/thickness and melittin activity, results indicate that the presence of lipid heterogeneity and lateral phase separation greatly influences the disrupting efficiency of melittin. In homogeneous non-raft forming membranes with high cholesterol content, melittin spontaneous activity is strongly delayed compared to heterogeneous raft-forming systems with the same amount of cholesterol. These results confirm the importance of lateral phase separation as a determinant factor in peptide activity. The information provided can be used for the design of more efficient antimicrobial peptides and the possibility of using a label-free approach for tailored-membranes and interactions with other types of peptides, such as amyloid peptides., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. To advance our understanding of the functioning of neuronal ensembles, systems are needed to enable simultaneous recording from a large number of individual neurons at high spatiotemporal resolution and good signal-to-noise ratio. Moreover, stimulation capability is highly desirable for investigating, for example, plasticity and learning processes. Here, we present a microelectrode array (MEA) system on a single CMOS die for in vitro recording and stimulation. The system incorporates 26,400 platinum electrodes, fabricated by in-house post-processing, over a large sensing area (3.85 × 2.10 mm 2 ) with sub-cellular spatial resolution (pitch of 17.5 μm). Owing to an area and power efficient implementation, we were able to integrate 1024 readout channels on chip to record extracellular signals from a user-specified selection of electrodes. These channels feature noise values of 2.4 μV rms in the action-potential band (300 Hz-10 kHz) and 5.4 μV rms in the local-field-potential band (1 Hz-300 Hz), and provide programmable gain (up to 78 dB) to accommodate various biological preparations. Amplified and filtered signals are digitized by 10 bit parallel single-slope ADCs at 20 kSamples/s. The system also includes 32 stimulation units, which can elicit neural spikes through either current or voltage pulses. The chip consumes only 75 mW in total, which obviates the need of active cooling even for sensitive cell cultures.

The effect of a wave with a varying traveling component on the bubble activity as well as the physical force generated by microbubbles on a surface has been studied. The acoustic emission from a collection of bubbles is measured in a 928 kHz sound field. Particle removal tests on a surface, which actually measures the applied physical force by the bubbles on that surface, indicate a very strong dependence on the angle of incidence. In other words, when the traveling wave component is maximized, the average physical force applied by microbubbles reaches a maximum. Almost complete particle removal for 78 nm silica particles was obtained for a traveling wave, while particle removal efficiency was reduced to only a few percent when a standing wave was applied. A previously reported diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-phenyl copolymer is modified by adding methoxy or octyloxy side chains on the phenyl spacer. The influence of these alkoxy substitutions on the physical, opto-electronic properties, and photovoltaic performance were investigated. It was found that the altered physical properties correlated with an increase in chain flexibility. Well-defined oligomers were synthesized to verify the observed structure-property relationship. Surprisingly, methoxy substitution on the benzene spacer resulted in higher melting and crystallization temperatures in the synthesized oligomers. This trend is not observed in the polymers, where the improved interactions are most likely counteracted by the larger conformational possibilities in the polymer chain upon alkoxy substitution. The best photovoltaic performance was obtained for the parent polymer: fullerene blends whereas the modifications on the other two polymers result in reduced open-circuit voltage and varying current densities under similar processing conditions. The current densities could be related to different polymer: fullerene blend morphologies. These results show that supposed small structural alterations such as methoxy substitution already significantly altered the physical properties of the parent polymer and also that oligomers and polymers respond divergent to structural alterations made on a parent structure.

Various industrial processes such as sonochemical processing and ultrasonic cleaning strongly rely on the phenomenon of acoustic cavitation. As the occurrence of acoustic cavitation is incorporating a multitude of interdependent effects, the amount of cavitation activity in a vessel is strongly depending on the ultrasonic process conditions. It is therefore crucial to quantify cavitation activity as a function of the process parameters. At 1 MHz, the active cavitation bubbles are so small that it is becoming difficult to observe them in a direct way. Hence, another metrology based on secondary effects of acoustic cavitation is more suitable to study cavitation activity. In this paper we present a detailed analysis of acoustic cavitation phenomena at 1 MHz ultrasound by means of time-resolved measurements of sonoluminescence, cavitation noise, and synchronized high-speed stroboscopic Schlieren imaging. It is shown that a correlation exists between sonoluminescence, and the ultraharmonic and broadband signals extracted from the cavitation noise spectra. The signals can be utilized to characterize different regimes of cavitation activity at different acoustic power densities. When cavitation activity sets on, the aforementioned signals correlate to fluctuations in the Schlieren contrast as well as the number of nucleated bubbles extracted from the Schlieren Images. This additionally proves that signals extracted from cavitation noise spectra truly represent a measure for cavitation activity. The cyclic behavior of cavitation activity is investigated and related to the evolution of the bubble populations in the ultrasonic tank. It is shown that cavitation activity is strongly linked to the occurrence of fast-moving bubbles. The origin of this "bubble streamers" is investigated and their role in the initialization and propagation of cavitation activity throughout the sonicated liquid is discussed. Finally, it is shown that bubble activity can be stabilized and enhanced by the use of pulsed ultrasound by conserving and recycling active bubbles between subsequent pulsing cycles., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Megasonic cleaning as applied in leading edge semiconductor device manufacturing strongly relies on the phenomenon of acoustic cavitation. As the occurrence of acoustic cavitation is incorporating a multitude of interdependent effects, the amount of cavitation activity in the cleaning liquid strongly depends on the sonication conditions. It is shown that cavitation activity as measured by means of ultraharmonic cavitation noise can be significantly enhanced when pulsed sonication is applied to a gas supersaturated liquid under traveling wave conditions. It is demonstrated that this enhancement coincides with a dramatic increase in particle removal and is therefore of great interest for megasonic cleaning applications. It is demonstrated that the optimal pulse parameters are determined by the dissolution time of the active bubbles, whereas the amount of cavitation activity depends on the ratio between pulse-off and pulse-on time as well as the applied acoustic power. The optimal pulse-off time is independent of the corresponding pulse-on time but increases significantly with increasing gas concentration. We show that on the other hand, supersaturation is needed to enable acoustic cavitation at aforementioned conditions, but has to be kept below values, for which active bubbles cannot dissolve anymore and are therefore lost during subsequent pulses. For the applicable range of gas contents between 100% and 130% saturation, the optimal pulse-off time reaches values between 150 and 340 ms, respectively. Full particle removal of 78 nm-diameter silica particles at a power density of 0.67 W/cm(2) is obtained for the optimal pulse-off times. The optimal pulse-off time values are derived from the dissolution time of bubbles with a radius of 3.3 μm and verified experimentally. The bubble radius used in the calculations corresponds to the linear resonance size in a 928 kHz sound field, which demonstrates that the recycling of active bubbles is the main enhancement mechanism. The optimal choice of the pulsing conditions however is constrained by the trade-off between the effective sonication time and the desire to have a sufficient amount of active bubbles at lower powers, which might be necessary if very delicate structures have to be cleaned., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Modulation of resonance modes of plasmonic nanostructures at a single nanostructure level is of great importance for the development of integrated photonic chips. Recent progress of the fabrication techniques including double electron beam lithography, direct laser printing, and electron beam induced deposition has allowed the local fabrication of sub-50 nm size nanoparticles (NPs) of various materials, which provides a potential experimental realization of local impact on plasmonic behaviors of single nanostructures. In this article, we theoretically investigate that the presence of a single NP in the midgap may give rise to the excitation of new resonance modes and/or large spectral shifts of resonance modes for different plasmonic dimers (gold bowtie, nanodisk and nanorod dimers), therefore resulting in the modification of the far-field and near-field optical properties. The modification can be controlled by changing the deposition position, particle size, and material composition of the single NP. Moreover, our calculations imply that the plasmonic dimers perturbed locally by a single NP of the metal-insulator phase transition material (vanadium dioxide) in the gap can potentially act as very effective optical switch components in future photonic chips.

To cope with the growing needs in research towards the understanding of cellular function and network dynamics, advanced micro-electrode arrays (MEAs) based on integrated complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) circuits have been increasingly reported. Although such arrays contain a large number of sensors for recording and/or stimulation, the size of the electrodes on these chips are often larger than a typical mammalian cell. Therefore, true single-cell recording and stimulation remains challenging. Single-cell resolution can be obtained by decreasing the size of the electrodes, which inherently increases the characteristic impedance and noise. Here, we present an array of 16,384 active sensors monolithically integrated on chip, realized in 0.18 μm CMOS technology for recording and stimulation of individual cells. Successful recording of electrical activity of cardiac cells with the chip, validated with intracellular whole-cell patch clamp recordings are presented, illustrating single-cell readout capability. Further, by applying a single-electrode stimulation protocol, we could pace individual cardiac cells, demonstrating single-cell addressability. This novel electrode array could help pave the way towards solving complex interactions of mammalian cellular networks., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012)

Detailed understanding of the underlying mechanisms of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) remains challenging for different experimental conditions. We report on an excitation wavelength dependent SERS of 4-aminothiophenol molecules on gold nanorings. SERS and normal Raman spectra, combined with well-characterized surface morphology, optical spectroscopy and electromagnetic (EM) field simulations of gold nanoring substrates indicate that the EM enhancement occurs at all three excitation wavelengths (532, 633 and 785 nm) employed but at short wavelengths (532 and 633 nm) charge transfer (CT) results in additional strong enhancements of particular Raman transitions. These results pave the way to further understanding the origin of the SERS mechanism.

The occurrence of acoustic cavitation in the cleaning liquid is a crucial precondition for the performance of megasonic cleaning systems. Hence, a fundamental understanding of the impact of different parameters of the megasonic process on cavitation activity is necessary. A setup capable of synchronously measuring sonoluminescence and acoustic emission originating from acoustically active bubbles is presented. The system also includes a high-speed-stroboscopic Schlieren imaging system to directly visualize the influence of cavitation activity on the Schlieren contrast and resolvable bubbles. This allows a thorough characterization of the mutual interaction of cavitation bubbles with the sound field and with each other. Results obtained during continuous sonication of argon-saturated water at various nominal power densities indicate that acoustic cavitation occurs in a cyclic manner, during which periods of stable and inertial cavitation activity alternate. The occurrence of higher and ultraharmonics in the acoustic emission spectra is characteristic for the stable cavitation state. The inertial cavitation state is characterized by a strong attenuation of the sound field, the explosive growth of bubbles and the occurrence of broadband components in the acoustic spectra. Both states can only be sustained at sufficiently high intensities of the sound field. At lower intensities, their occurrences are limited to short, random bursts. Cleaning activity can be linked to the cavitation activity through the measurement of particle removal on standard 200 mm silicon wafers. It is found that the particle removal efficiency is reduced, when a continuous state of cavitation activity ceases to exist.

Functional oxide films were obtained at low temperature by combination of aqueous precursors and a UV-assisted annealing process (aqueous photochemical solution deposition). For a PbTiO(3) model system, functional ferroelectric perovskite films were prepared at only 400 °C, a temperature compatible with the current Si-technology demands. Intrinsically photosensitive and environmentally friendly aqueous precursors can be prepared for most of the functional multimetal oxides, as additionally demonstrated here for multiferroic BiFeO(3), yielding virtually unlimited possibilities for this low-temperature fabrication technology.

We demonstrate strong spatial localization of SERS on single symmetry-reduced gold semishell and nanobowl particles. A ∼30 nm carbon nanoparticle acts as a Raman reporter and is placed on different locations on a single semishell or nanobowl by e-beam induced deposition method, and remarkably different SERS intensities are observed.

We observe the appearance of multiple dipole surface plasmon resonances in spherical Ag nanoparticles when embedded in an organic semiconductor that exhibits a highly dispersive permittivity. Comparing the absorption spectra of thin-films with and without Ag nanoparticles reveals the presence of two plasmon peaks. Numerical simulations and calculations based on an electrostatic model allow us to attribute both peaks to dipole resonances, and show that the strong dispersion of the organic permittivity is responsible for this behavior. The presence of these two plasmon resonances was found to enhance the absorption of the organic semiconductor over a broad wavelength range.

When designing DNA biosensors, the immobilization of specific DNA probes is one of the most essential parts. Unfortunately, many of the existing strategies (e.g., adsorption, complexation, and entrapment) can only be used on standard microscope slides, while for more tailored surfaces alternative strategies are still required. In the case of gold surfaces, the self-assembly of mixed DNA/alkanethiol films is a very common approach to directly couple single-stranded DNA probes. The quality of these mixed films greatly depends on different parameters including the sensitivity and the detection limit. We have shown a positive relation between the length of the used carbon spacer and the general performance of the DNA biosensor. In this chapter an extended protocol for the controlled immobilization and subsequent hybridization of DNA is described.

Controlling the morphology of soluble small molecule organic semiconductors is crucial for the application of such materials in electronic devices. Using a simple dip-coating process we systematically vary the film drying speed to produce a range of morphologies, including oriented needle-like crystals. Structural characterization as well as electrical transistor measurements show that intermediate drying velocities produce the most uniformly aligned films., (Copyright © 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The focusing of plasmons to obtain a strong and localized electromagnetic-field enhancement for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is increasing the interest in using plasmonic devices as molecular sensors. In this Full Paper, we report the successful fabrication and demonstration of a solid-state plasmonic nanoslit-cavity device equipped with nanoantennas on a freestanding thin silicon membrane as a substrate for SERS. Numerical calculations predict a strong and spatially localized enhancement of the optical field in the nanoslit (6 nm in width) upon irradiation. The predicted enhancement factor of SERS was 5.3 x 10(5), localized in an area of just 6 x 1.5 nm(2). Raman spectroscopy and imaging confirm an enhancement factor of approximately 10(6) for SERS from molecules chemisorbed at the nanoslit, and demonstrate the electromagnetic-field-enhancing function of the plasmonic nanoantennas. The freestanding membrane is open on both sides of the nanoslit, offering the potential for through-slit molecular translocation studies, and opening bright new perspectives for SERS applications in real-time (bio)chemical analysis.

The formation and properties of (110)-textured P-doped microcrystalline CVD diamond were studied. Based on several microscopy techniques, with a special emphasis on electron backscattered diffraction, a detailed determination of the grain orientations with respect to the exact [110] axis is given. The different orientations present in the film, in combination with low phosphine concentrations in the gas phase, lead to a variation in P incorporation that can vary over three orders of magnitude, as determined with cathodoluminescence mapping. The role of the surface morphology in the observation of these large incorporation differences is explained. Hall measurements confirm that the films are n-type conductive with a thermal activation energy of 0.56 eV. Based on B-doped substrates, pn junctions were created, showing a rectification ratio of nearly 10(4) at ± 25 V.

In this paper the magnetic field detection limits of microscopic Hall sensors are investigated as a function of their lateral size. Hall sensors fabricated from GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures and silicon are experimentally investigated at different temperatures using Hall effect and noise spectrum measurements. At room temperature a clear size dependence of the detection limit is observed, whereas at low temperatures this dependence is found to disappear. The results are explained using the theory of noise in semiconductors.

We describe a high sensitivity measurement setup for the determination of recombination parameters in semiconductors at low levels of carrier injection. The setup is based on a lock-in amplifier and on a commercially available contactless conductivity detector. The information on recombination is extracted through the analysis, assuming quasi-steady-state conditions, of the low frequency, sinusoidally modulated photoconductivity signal induced by the illumination of a 950 nm light emitting diode array. Experimental results show a substantial increase in sensitivity with respect to traditional transient or quasi-steady-state techniques based on the same detection principle. The sensitivity bonus can be exploited for the extension of the carrier injection range for which effective recombination lifetime is measurable, both in the case of p-type and n-type wafers.

Cellular adhesion and growth on solid-state surfaces is the central theme in the development of cell-based biosensors and implantable medical devices. Suitable interface techniques must be applied to construct stable and well-organized thin films of biologically active molecules that would control the development of neuronal cells on chips. Peptides such as RGD fragments, poly-L-lysine (PLL), or basal lamina proteins, such as laminin or fibronectin, are often used in order to promote cellular adhesion on surfaces. In this paper we describe the characterization of several self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for their ability to anchor a laminin-derived synthetic peptide, PA22-2, a peptide known to promote neuronal attachment and stimulate neurite outgrowth. We have evaluated the immobilization of PA22-2 onto 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid, 4-maleimide-N-(11-undecyldithio)butanamide, and 2-(maleimide)ethyl-N-(11-hexaethylene oxide-undecyldithio)acetamide SAM functionalized Au substrates. The neuronal attachment and outgrowth have been evaluated in embryonic mouse hippocampal neuron cultures up to 14 days in vitro. Our results show that differences in the cell morphologies were observed on the surfaces modified with various SAMs, despite the minor differences in chemical composition identified using standard characterization tools. These different cell morphologies can most probably be explained when investigating the effect of a given SAM layer on the adsorption of proteins present in the culture medium. More likely, it is the ratio between the specific PA22-2 adsorption and nonspecific medium protein adsorption that controls the cellular morphology. Large amounts of adsorbed medium proteins could screen the PA22-2 sites required for cellular attachment.

Solid-state nanopores of only a few nanometres in size show a great potential for applications such as molecule detection and DNA sequencing. In most cases, the fabrication of such a nanopore requires the high energy beam of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) or focused ion beam (FIB) tool to drill or reshape a small hole in a freestanding membrane. Here, we present a novel method to reduce the size of existing nanopores using electron-beam-induced deposition (EBID) of carbon in a conventional scanning electron microscope (SEM). The existing nanopores are etched in a silicon membrane using anisotropic wet etching and can be shrunk down to a few nanometres using EBID. This paper discusses the parameters that influence the rate of shrinking and provides an insight into the underlying mechanism.

Nanoimprint lithography is used to directly pattern the conjugated polymer semiconductor poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). We obtain trenches with aspect ratios up to 2 and feature sizes as small as 50 nm in this polymer. The application to organic solar cells is shown by creating an interpenetrated donor-acceptor interface, based on P3HT and N,N'-ditridecyl-3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI-C(13)), deposited from the vapor phase to reduce shadow effects. A planarizing layer of spin-coated zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles is used to reduce the roughness of the layer stack. The response of the photovoltaic devices follows the increased interface area, up to a 2.5-fold enhancement.

The immobilization of DNA strands is an essential step in the development of any DNA biosensor. Self-assembled mixed DNA/alkanethiol films are often used for coupling DNA probes covalently to the sensor surface. Although this strategy is well accepted, the effect of introducing a spacer molecule to increase the distance between the specific DNA sequence and the surface has rarely been assessed. The major goal of this work was to evaluate a number of such spacers and to assess their impact on for example the sensitivity and the reproducibility. Besides the commonly used mercaptohexyl (C(6)) spacer, a longer mercapto-undecyl (C(11)) spacer was selected. The combination of both spacers with tri(ethylene)glycol (TEG) and hexa(ethylene)glycol (HEG) was studied as well. The effect of the different spacers on the immobilization degree as well as on the consecutive hybridization was studied using surface plasmon resonance (SPR). When using the longer C(11) spacer the mixed DNA/alkanethiol films were found to be more densely packed. Further hybridization studies have indicated that C(11) modified probes improve the sensitivity, the corresponding detection limit as well as the reproducibility. In addition two different immobilization pathways, i.e. flow vs. diffusion controlled, were compared with respect to the hybridization efficiency. These data suggest that a flow-assisted approach is beneficial for DNA immobilization and hybridization events. In conclusion, this work demonstrates the considerable impact of spacers on the biosensor performance but also shows the importance of a flow-assisted immobilization approach.

This paper describes the fabrication and in vitro testing of a device capable of chemically stimulating individual neurons. Electrophoretic actuation is used to locally induce the release of the neurotransmitter L-glutamate in a network of hippocampal neurons cultured on top of the device. Cell activation by the neurotransmitter is visualized using calcium imaging. Single-cell stimulation is demonstrated close to the release site after application of a voltage of 500 mV. Such a device could provide a useful tool in both basic and clinical neuroscience. In a broader context, this device can be used to locally release small amounts of chemical compounds in Lab-on-Chip and drug delivery applications.

The use of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) in sensorics is relatively new. Although electronic noses, electronic textiles and disposable biochemical sensors appear to be viable applications for this type of devices, the benefits of the technology still have to be proven. This paper aims to provide a review of the recent advances in the area of chemically sensitive field-effect devices based on organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs), with emphasis on bioanalytical applications. Detection principle, device configuration, materials and fabrication processes as well as sensor performances will be discussed, with emphasis on the potential for implementation in real applications and the important challenges ahead.
