Ron Capps won the NHRA U.S. Nationals driving a Don Prudhomme-Hot Wheels tribute Funny Car. Don Prudhomme, a successful drag racer, added a Funny Car to his racing operation in the 1960s and formed a partnership with Tom McEwen, creating the iconic "Snake and Mongoose" legacy. Prudhomme's performance at the 1973 NHRA US Nationals was a pivotal moment in his Funny Car career, as he won the event and set records. Fifty years later, Ron Capps honored Prudhomme's win by designing his NAPA-sponsored Funny Car to resemble Prudhomme's 1973 entry. Capps went on to win the U.S. Nationals, continuing the legacy. Gaps exist in archival practices, and developments are in progress to decolonise and transform archives by supplementing existing archival collections with oral history accounts. This is a recent development in the archival field, requiring archivists and records managers to become aware of how oral history collections should be undertaken to preserve testimonies related to socio-economic, sociopolitical, and cultural events not yet captured by South African public archivists. An open educational resource (OER) was developed in 2022 as part of an engaged scholarship initiative to instruct archivists on oral history research techniques and how to apply research ethics when undertaking such projects. The research paradigm for this study was a postmodernist qualitative study. Action-based research was used in the research design. Action research is a flexible methodology uniquely suited to research and support change. It integrates social research with exploratory actions to promote development. Action research outcomes are both practical and theoretical. The knowledge it generates directly and continuously impacts the changing practices of the participants. Data from participants were collected through recorded project workshops and meetings. The content for the OER was developed from observing online videos showcasing oral history interviews, consulting literature on OER development, and discussions with archivists and heritage collectors at the South African National Film, Video and Sound Archives, the South African National Parks Board, and the Gauteng Provincial Archives. The OER was developed to enable collaboration to ensure that the oral narratives of postcolonial Africa, particularly post-apartheid South Africa, are not lost but captured by the public archives' services for the benefit of South Africans and other interested stakeholders. Purpose: South African public archives have not been able to transform into active documenters of society. As a result, they cannot carry out their mandate of collecting non-public records of lasting value and national significance and recording aspects of the country's experience that have previously been ignored by archives repositories. This paper aims to discuss efforts by the Gauteng Provincial Archives to transform the archival landscape in South Africa by collecting sports memories. This is because, in democratic South Africa, the archival landscape was expected to change and reflect the nation's diversity, despite the fact that it still largely reflected the Western-dominated global mainstream. Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on the authors' personal experiences with the development and operation of the Gauteng Provincial Archives. The authors are also involved in the Gauteng Provincial Archives' oral history project, which aims to build an inclusive archive by recording oral histories of sports memories across the province. Findings: The construction of the Gauteng Archives Repository has ushered in a chance to decolonise South African archives by collecting sports memories. These are windows of opportunity through which ordinary people can include their own experiences, filling in the gaps left by colonial and apartheid archives. Originality/value: This paper offers practical experience in transforming and decolonising archives through collecting sports memories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sporting events are arenas of emotional bursts, and social media is a place where such emotional irruptions of fans are encoded in their words and button clicks. This study investigates the use of Facebook reactions by sports fans during the most significant world-class sporting events in 2016: the UEFA Euro, the men's football championship of Europe, and the Summer Olympics Games, a major international multi-sport event. Our research challenge is to find out how people react to sports content and underscore the importance of emotional processes in shaping collective outcomes. In the paper, we propose a model for measuring the intensity of emotional charge, in terms of Facebook reactions and virality, and the results show what Facebook users think and feel about both sports events. According to our findings, the Olympics are the sporting arena of "emotions of peace", and the Euro is the sporting arena of "war of emotions". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article seeks to examine the current dynamism of biographical approaches that explore the history of PE teachers in France through the prism of gender. To this end, the first section examines the historiographical filiations of the history of female PE teachers, where it intersects with the history of women and gender, gender in the history of sport, and the history of education, coeducation and female teachers. The second section focuses on the theoretical and methodological shifts brought about by gender within the wider biographical transformation of the history of PE teachers. Here I will discuss the shift from a male profession to a mixed-gender profession, from the study of groups to that of individuals, and from the use of official sources to that of oral sources. This contribution will conclude by considering possible next steps for the social history of female teachers and arguing for a history from below of women in PE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reviews the participation of Indian females in international sports over time. Despite representing about half of India's population, female participation in sports, particularly at the international level, has been lower than desired. However, female athletes have achieved significant success in international competitions. The study analyzes the participation and achievements of Indian females in the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Olympic Games. At the Rio Olympics in 2016, India had 120 participants, with 54 males and 66 females, making female representation 45%. At the Tokyo Olympics 2020, women made up 53 of the 121 participants, securing 3 out of India's 7 medals (approximately 43%), including one silver and two bronze. The Tokyo Paralympics 2020 was India's most successful, with 19 medals (5 – gold, 8 – silver, and 6 – bronze). Female athletes also excelled, with Bhavina Patel winning India's first Paralympic medal in table tennis, and shooter Avani Lekhara becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal and multiple medals in the Paralympics. The analysis shows that sports like archery and badminton have higher female participation, while athletics, golf, shooting, and wrestling have more male participants. There is no female representation in judo, rowing, and boxing, and no male representation in gymnastics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Urgency of the research. Noticeable socio-economic and socio-political transformations in Ukrainian society, caused by external military aggression, actualized the topic of rethinking the known and searching for new guidelines in human development. For philosophy and pedagogy, the question of researching the reliable foundations of moral education of the individual remains important. Target setting. The problem of the research is the lack of scientific works on the relationship between the socio-cultural phenomena of sports and Christianity. The topic of finding an educational ideal in a multicultural environment and in the conditions of the growth of individual opportunities for person self-identification needs to turn to the history and current features of sports and Christianity, which turn out to be important factors in the production of moral and educational potential for personality formation. Actual scientific researches and issues analysis. In the conceptual plan, the works of leading Ukrainian philosophers are important for solving the research tasks: V. Andrushchenko, V. Bondarenko, V. Yelenskyi, M. Ibragimov, A. Kyslyi, V. Kremen, O. Sagan, P. Saukha, L. Filipovych, Y. Chornomorets; teachers: M. Bulatova, S. Bubka, O. Vatseby, M. Vizytei, Zh. Kozina, I. Oleksyn, V. Platonova, E. Prystupy; foreign authors: Andrew Parker, David Asa Schwartz, Duke Taber, Earle F. Zeigler, Joseph Price, Kathleen M Armour, Kevin Lixey, Michael Novak, Nick J. Watson, Robert Higgs, Shirl Hoffman, Stuart Weir and others. The research objective. The purpose of the study is to analyze the factors of convergence the socio-cultural phenomena of sports and Christianity in the history of the development both thehuman culture and the modern understanding the possibility of the moral and educational influence of their relationship on the formation of personality. The statement of basic materials. It is considered the formation of organized sports activities, which arose on the basis of Olympic ideals in ancient Greece. Sports competitions had a deeply religious and cult character and contributed to the education of the individual. With the advent of Christianity, the relationship between sports and the Christian church acquired anthropological dimensions. Sports and Christianity appear as a natural result of the centuries-old history of mankind, as a multifunctional cultural phenomenon, where the physical and spiritual qualities of a person are most clearly manifested and the valuable assets of civilization are expressed, which in unity represent a powerful moral and educational resource in the formation of personality. Conclusions. Sports and Christianity as special socio-cultural phenomena have a rich history of mutual relations. By determining the phenomena of the subjective order, they make it possible to acquire such competences that deepen individual perception and motivating motives, construct an appropriate education system that promotes the harmonious development of the individual in the unity of the intellectual, spiritual and physical qualities of a person. HISTORY of sports , *WORLD history , *MILITARY sports , *HOCKEY , *ATHLETIC clubs , *CRIME - Abstract
South African popular and formal sport history has over-emphasised rugby, soccer and cricket during the nineteenth century. To date, no formal South African study has covered a history of hockey. The game emerged in South African newspapers during the mid-to late-nineteenth century. The present article conveys this history within a socio-historical context, starting with an historical narrative about the origins of the game in England. It is worth noting that these origins came to Britain through African and other routes. In England, hockey developed around issues of class and gender and was exported to its colonies in this manner. In the Cape Colony the game emerged initially in schools and later in military garrisons and sport clubs. Not surprisingly, the early officials of these clubs were also leading members in other social areas of society, and, as with all things in colonial society, black people were usually only mentioned in the press in relation to crime and menial activities. This was also true of hockey. In the Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek, for example, where earliest documentation exists from 1897 onwards, they were recorded acting as groundsmen at white sporting venues. This article pivots around the work of Robertha Park who argues that sports are cultural artefacts, reflecting dominant social structures and salient values of societies. The best we can do is explain the origins of South African hockey as a fraction of world history. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study employs descriptive and regression analyses of the National Sports and Society Survey (N = 3,993) to examine the patterns and implications of sexual stigma and prejudice in sports contexts by focusing on U.S. adults' reports of sports-related mistreatment and involvement. Results indicate that about 1/3 of adults perceive sports as unwelcoming to LGBT athletes and nearly 40% report experiencing sports-related mistreatment; adults who identify as a sexual minority are particularly likely to perceive sports as unwelcoming and to report personal mistreatment. They are also less likely than self-identified heterosexuals to play, spectate, and talk about sports; sports-related mistreatment and childhood sports histories do not explain these patterns. Overall, the findings suggest that more action is needed to offset the presence and influence of sexual stigma and prejudice and to provide more welcoming sports environments for all. COMMUNICATION in sports , *WEIMAR Republic, 1918-1933 , *LOBBYING , *ENVY , *HISTORY of sports , *NEWS agencies , *SOCIAL classes , *CULTURAL history , *ACTIVE medium - Abstract
Organized sport in the Weimar Republic was dominated by three strands—so-called bourgeois sport, the gymnastics movement (Turnen) and the workers' sports movement (Arbeitersport). While scholarship has rightly pointed out the differences between their federations, it has neglected a significant feature they had in common: the struggle to communicate key messages to their members. For the first time, this article examines debates about and developments in the communications of Weimar's leading sports organizations. It shows that through the 1920s producing journals, running news services and lobbying the press became as important as competing in or watching sport itself, as the organizations sought to raise their profile, gain new members and retain the members they already had. Each of them, while envying the others, failed to meet its goals for similar reasons: inadequate internal structures, poor decision-making and the allure of commercialized sport and the papers and magazines it fed and produced. While scholarship has often noted the high level of sports coverage in the mainstream press, it has not explored the dynamic pull of such reporting on readers. By examining the effects of the professional media on the active members of the three main federations, this article therefore also sheds light on the power of new forms of writing and entertainment to influence individuals as the shift to consumer habits increased in all social classes throughout the Weimar Republic. In doing so, it bridges between empirically orientated forms of sports history and cultural histories of the press. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we aimed to analyze the development process of physical education and teaching in Türkiye during the Second Constitutional Period by examining the visual contents in the “Terbiye ve Oyun” (Physical Education and Games) magazine published by Selim Sırrı Tarcan, who pioneered the development of physical education culture in our sports history. In this article, considering the historical process, the change in sports culture in the Ottoman Empire was examined in the context of “physical education.” All visual content related to sports and physical education was analyzed by the content analysis method in 30 issues of “Terbiye ve Oyun,” which was published by Selim Sırrı Tarcan in two different periods in 1911 and 1922. When all the visual content featured in the magazine is examined, it is seen that the magazine did not only provide its readers with content related to physical education and gymnastics but also featured informative content about children’s favorite games, entertainment activities, and different sports branches. In this context, it has been tried to reflect the visual content that the magazine offers to its readers in order to contribute to physical education and sports culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The text discusses the banning of rugby league during the Vichy regime in France. Rugby league was considered too similar to rugby union and was therefore banned, despite being a separate sport with a long history. Other sports were allowed to continue, but rugby league was suppressed entirely. The ban was justified under the pretext of merging the two federations and promoting robust competition, but this reasoning is questionable. The author argues that the ban was a deliberate attempt to remove rugby league from the French sporting scene. The text also highlights the importance of considering the wider context of the Occupation and the impact it had on French society. [Extracted from the article]

In this article, the author responds to Keith Rathbone's analysis of the death of Rugby League in Vichy France. The author argues that Rathbone's analysis overlooks important aspects and fails to consider the context of pre-war Rugby League in France. They highlight the independent nature of the Comité National des Sports (CNS) and the opposition faced by Rugby League from the Fédération Française de Rugby (FFR) within the inner circles of the state. The author also discusses the fear and actions of the FFR to prevent the establishment and development of Rugby League in France. They argue that Vichy's ban on Rugby League was unjust and influenced by the FFR's desire to eradicate the sport. The author concludes by emphasizing the need to consider the historical context when analyzing these events. [Extracted from the article]

The unrelenting threat of climate change and extreme weather events on human settlements has prompted urban planners and public policymakers to develop robust climate mitigation and adaptation strategies for their cities. As part of these measures, they may identify existing or proposed infrastructure that could serve residents during a public emergency (e.g. as shelters). One such candidate is the modern professional sports stadium, which has demonstrated its versatility over the past several years by serving as field hospitals, COVID-19 testing and mass vaccination sites, and municipal voting centers. In this commentary, we consider the essential contribution sports stadiums may make to cities and regions impacted by extreme weather and climate change. Specifically, we examine the utility of a publicly funded stadium as a shelter in response to large-scale disasters. As part of our analysis, we identify the structural, geographical, organizational, and logistical factors that impact the feasibility of this proposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Many authors have noted the lack of knowledge on the causal relationship between the degree of physical activity, the dynamics, and outcomes of diseases, as well as the influence of sports history on the rehabilitation potential of former athletes.Purpose: Assessment of the functional state of the cardiovascular system according to the indicators of electrocardiography, polycardiography, echocardiography and the level of physical performance in masters athletes.Patients and Methods: The study included a main group consisting of 100 athletes, who had undergone electrocardiography, poly-electrocardiography, ultrasound echocardiography, heart rate and blood pressure measurement to determine their level of physical performance. The subjects were then divided into 2 groups. The first group included 75 people who continue to be active in regular sports activities. The second group consisted of 25 people who completely stopped training or had only occasional, unsystematic physical activities. A control group of 31 people, consisting of people of the same age who had not been involved in sports earlier, was examined according to the same program. Results: The data obtained by us show that sports activities do contribute to the increasing stability of the body and maximize the deployment of the capabilities of the circulatory system, including their long-term preservation in masters athletic. Athletes who have stopped training have signs of age-related changes in the heart and blood vessels, which seem to be more frequent and earlier than those who continue training. A higher degree of myocardial contractility (in 90.67% of cases) can also be seen in the main group. Conclusion: Masters athletes and those who stopped training after completing their sports career, should have notably thorough medical supervision and undergo regular annual in-depth examination. This study explores the intersections between the study of sport and the study of the city through the extension of sport history to themes traditionally explored by geography—notably urban planning scholars. Its focus is two case studies related to urban planning decisions in early millennial Sydney, Australia. Through an examination of public submissions in response to building development applications made by two community-owned professional sports organizations competing in the National Rugby League, the study explores how modern sporting fandom complicates ideas about place and locality through forms of delocalization and glocalization. The authors conclude that when exploring the phenomenon of place protection, the built environment is not necessarily the primary factor informing a sense of place attachment in an urban environment. Background: The degree of deterioration in sarcopenia parameters may be affected by a person's level of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB). Our study focused on examining the PA and SB of active older adults including those with and without history of sports in youth. Methods: Forty-four participants (20 men and 24 women, mean age of total sample 76.1 ± 5.2 years) were included in analysis of PA, SB habits and sarcopenia parameters, determined by skeletal muscle index, hand-grip strength, gait speed, Timed Up and Go tests (TUG). PA and SB were recorded with accelerometers. Our primary aim was to compare participants with (AH) or without a sport history in youth (NAH), in their sarcopenia parameters and PA and SB habits. Results: When divided participants in two groups (AH and NAH) and adjusting for age, we have detected the differences for skeletal muscle index (p = 0.007) and hand-grip strength (p = 0.004) in favor of participants who were engaged in sports in youth. We did not find any differences in PA and SB habits between the AH and NAH groups. After adjusting for age, participants with a higher number of daily steps, longer moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) bouts, a higher number of MVPA bouts in a day and higher overall MVPA engagement achieved better results in hand-grip strength and TUG. Participants with lower SB had better TUG and gait speed results. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that engaging in sports activities in youth can make a difference with sarcopenia parameters. Although we found no differences in PA and SB habits between participants with AH and NAH, participants with an athlete history performed better results in sarcopenia parameters. The new urban sporting territory in Edmonton's city center was constructed within the framework of continued settler colonialism. The main catalyst for this development was sport-related gentrification: a new, publicly financed ice hockey arena for the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers, and a surrounding sport and entertainment district. This two-year ethnography explores this territory, in particular the changing interactions between preexisting, less affluent city-center residents and police, private security, crisis workers, and hockey fans. It reveals how residents navigate the physical and spatial changes to a downtown that are not only structured by revanchism, but by what Rai Reece calls "carceral redlining," or the continuation of White supremacy through regulation, surveillance, displacement, and dispossession. Between 2000 and 2018, the number of fights in professional hockey decreased by more than half, reflecting rule changes intended to preserve player health. A 2019 playoff fight ignited debate on social media over the place of fighting in hockey. This research involved a content analysis of an incendiary tweet and the 920 replies it solicited. Content analysis confirmed that cultural backlash exists in sport and provided insight into manifestations of backlash. Comments exhibiting backlash varied by subject (i.e., what or who is being discussed in the tweet) and attitude (i.e., positive approval for fighting and negative attitude toward change), with many defending hockey masculinity. Connections are drawn to manifestations of backlash in the political realm, the extant hockey masculinity literature, and implications for sociological theory and the sport of hockey are discussed. The Pakistan Super League launched in 2016 with massive enthusiasm in its "cricket-mad" nation. However, safety concerns stemming from a 2009 terrorist attack in Lahore, Pakistan, meant all matches were played in the United Arab Emirates until the tournament's final game in 2017—the ultimate test in seeing if top-level cricket could return to Pakistan. In this study, the authors examine framing of the creation in 2013 and first 2 years of the Pakistan Super League from news sources in Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. This study offers an opportunity to understand how Middle Eastern sport and the sport's connection to national identity are framed in the media across multiple countries during a pivotal time for cricket in Pakistan. American collegiate sport participation has been linked with psychosocial and career-related benefits as well as with mental and physical health risks, with extant research revealing mixed results. The study purpose, informed by the Health through Sport Conceptual Model, was to describe and compare associations among health-related quality of life and psychosocial measures of former U.S. collegiate athletes (n = 594) and non-athletes (n = 742) from four university graduation cohorts. Results suggest on aggregate former collegiate athletes report more positive outcomes than their non-athlete peers. Study findings were, in some instances, mitigated/reversed when participants endorsed concussion, career ending injury or revenue sport participation histories or were female. Results provide some support for protective associations/benefits of collegiate athletics participation and inform the work of practitioners working with athletes during and after the collegiate sport experience. This study also provides a theoretical bridge from intercollegiate athletics to broader sport promotion literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"War Football: World War I and the Birth of the NFL" by Chris Serb explores the connection between World War I and the rise of American football. Serb argues that the sport gained popularity during the war due to the mass mobilization of former college football players into the military. Football became a way to whip newly enlisted men into shape and prevent moral corruption. The book provides personal accounts and newspaper articles to tell the story of how football stars were drawn into the military, played in charity matches, and toured the country on the government's dime. Serb's work is well-told and well-argued, providing a comprehensive history of this period of American sporting history. However, the book could have delved deeper into topics such as race and wider cultural shifts during this time. Overall, "War Football" is an enjoyable and informative read for both general readers and academics interested in American football. [Extracted from the article]

"Religion and the Rise of Sport in England" by Hugh McLeod is a comprehensive exploration of the interactions between sport, religion, and the churches in England from 1790 to the present. The book examines the role of different branches of Christianity, particularly the evangelicals, in relation to sport, with a focus on the Sabbath question. McLeod argues that social class has been more influential than faith in shaping divisions in sport, but also acknowledges the increasing significance of faith and ethnicity in amateur clubs and teams from the 1970s onwards. The book provides a nuanced understanding of the transition from sport defining class identity to becoming a dimension of personal theology. However, it could have delved further into the impact of professional sports and the clash between wealth, class, and culture. Overall, "Religion and the Rise of Sport in England" offers a state-of-the-art account of the complex relationship between religion and sport in England since the industrial revolution.
