The title compound, C8H13NO2Se, crystallizes as a non-merohedral twin with an approximate 9:1 component ratio with two symmetry-independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. Our density-functional theory (DFT) computations indicate that the carb-oxy C atom is expected to be slightly pyramidal due to an n→ π* inter-action, wherein the lone pair (n) of the Se atom overlap with the anti-bonding orbital (π*) of the carbonyl group. Such pyramidalization is observed in one mol-ecule of the title compound but not the other.

A modular synthetic method has been developed for the preparation of Ru polypyridyl complexes bearing a terminal alkyne. This method proceeds through a readily accessible intermediate with a silyl-protected alkyne and allows access to a variety of five- and six-coordinate Ru complexes. These complexes can be easily attached to azide-functionalized electrode surfaces with only slight perturbation of the redox properties of the parent complex.

The properties of p-phenylenediamine- (PD-) based systems substantially depend on the molecular topology. The singly bridged PD analogues HMPD and OMPD in which the PD rings are connected by a flexible linker reveal particular electronic properties in their radical cations and dications. The EPR and UV-vis spectra of HMPD(2+••) were found to be exceptionally temperature-sensitive, following a change from the extended conformation (doublet-doublet state) predominant at room temperature to the π-stacked conformation (singlet state) prevailing at dry-ice temperature. Changing the single bridge from (CH(2))(3) to dimethylated CH(2)CMe(2)CH(2) in OMPD(2+••) causes considerably less of the π-stacked conformation to be present at low temperature as a result of the steric interactions with the methyl groups of the bridge. In contrast to HMPD(2+••) and OMPD(2+••), in which the positive charges are localized separately in each PD(+•) ring, in the extended conformation, exchange of the electron ("hole hopping") between the two PD units (fast at the time scale of EPR experiments) was observed for HMPD(+•) and OMPD(+•). This process slows in a reversible manner with decreasing temperature, thus forming the radical cation with the unpaired electron spin density predominantly on one PD core, at low temperatures. Accordingly, a subtle balance between conformational changes, electron delocalization, and spin states could be established.

The title compound, [PdCl(2)(C(21)H(17)N(3))], is a member of a sequence of Pd, Pt and Co dichloride complexes bearing polysubstituted (pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)pyridine ligands. It is shown that there is a correlation between the steric bulkiness of the bidentate (pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)pyridine ligands and the Pd-N(pyrazole) distances, i.e. the larger the ligand, the longer the bond. In contrast, no trend is observed between the steric properties of the ligand and the Pd-N(pyridine) bond lengths.

We have developed two different types of tandem reactions for the synthesis of highly functionalized cyclohexenones from cyclopropyl substituted propargyl esters. Both reactions were initiated by rhodium-catalyzed Saucy-Marbet 1,3-acyloxy migration. The resulting cyclopropyl substituted allenes derived from acyloxy migration then underwent [5 + 1] cycloaddition with CO. The acyloxy group not only eased the access to allene intermediates but also provided a handle for further selective functionalizations.

The angles within the benzene ring in the title compound, C(30)H(49)N(3)O, ranging from 116.34 (16) to 124.18 (16)°, reflect the presence of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents. The angles at the two electron-donating tert-butyl substituents are smaller than 120°, at the electron-withdrawing eth-oxy substituent larger than 120°, and at the imine substituent equal to 119.59 (16)°. The latter does not reflect the electron-donating nature of the imine group due to the presence of other substituents.

The title compound, C(38)H(30)N(4), a potentially mono- and bidentate ligand, does not seem to form palladium complexes similar to other poly(pyrazol-1-ylmeth-yl)benzenes due to the large steric size of the phenyl substituents on the pyrazole rings. The pyrazole rings have a 21.09 (5)° angle between their mean planes and exhibit a trans-like geometry in which the in-plane lone pairs of electrons on the 2-N nitrogen atoms point in opposite directions.

Nitrogen-containing stereotriads, compounds with three adjacent stereodefined carbons, are commonly found in biologically important molecules. However, the preparation of molecules bearing these motifs can be challenging. Herein, we describe a modular oxidation protocol which converts a substituted allene to a triply functionalized amine of the form C-X/C-N/C-Y. The key step employs a Rh-catalyzed intramolecular conversion of the allene to a strained bicyclic methylene aziridine. This reactive intermediate is further elaborated to the target products, often in one reaction vessel and with effective transfer of the axial chirality of the allene to point chirality in the stereotriad.

The title compound, [Ni(C(45)H(28)N(4)O)], crystallizes in the space group I ̅42d and resides on a crystallographic fourfold rotoinversion axis with only a quarter of the complex in the asymmetric unit. The complex displays positional disorder as the one aldehyde group on the ligand can be located at four different positions. It was necessary to model this as compositional disorder to obtain a correct model and refinement. The practical approach to the refinement is explained.

An asymmetric synthesis of two new diastereomeric γ-amino acids is described. Both molecules contain a cyclohexyl ring to limit conformational flexibility about the Cα-Cβ bond; they differ in having cis vs trans stereochemistry on the ring. Residues derived from the cis γ isomer are shown to support helical secondary structures in α/γ-peptide oligomers.

The title compound, C(21)H(17)N(3), crystallizes with the phenyl ring in the 3-position coplanar with the pyrazole ring within 4.04 (5)°, whereas the phenyl ring in the 5-position forms a dihedral angle of 50.22 (3)° with the pyrazole ring. There is no ambiguity regarding the position of pyridine N atom, which could have exhibited disorder between the ortho positions of the ring.

An efficient asymmetric synthesis of the 22nd amino acid L-pyrrolysine has been accomplished. The key stereogenic centers were installed by an asymmetric conjugate addition reaction. A Staudinger/aza-Wittig cyclization was used to form the acid-sensitive pyrroline ring. Pyrrolysine was synthesized in 13 steps in 20% overall yield.

Nitrogen-containing stereotriads occur in a number of biologically active compounds, but general and flexible methods to access these compounds are limited mainly to the manipulation of chiral olefins. An alternative approach is to employ a highly chemo-, regio-, and stereocontrolled allene oxidation that can install a new carbon-heteroatom bond at each of the three original allene carbons. In this paper, an intramolecular/intermolecular allene bis-aziridination is described that offers the potential to serve as a key step for the construction of stereotriads containing vicinal diaminated motifs. The resultant 1,4-diazaspiro[2.2]pentane (DASP) scaffolds contain two electronically differentiated aziridines that undergo highly regioselective ring openings at C1 with a variety of heteroatom nucleophiles to give chiral N,N-aminals. Alternatively, the same DASP intermediate can be induced to undergo a double ring-opening reaction at both C1 and C3 to yield vicinal diaminated products corresponding to formal ring opening at C3. The chirality of a propargyl alcohol is easily transferred to the DASP with good fidelity, providing a new paradigm for the construction of enantioenriched nitrogen-containing stereotriads.

A Rh-catalyzed 1,3-acyloxy migration of propargyl ester followed by intramolecular [4+2] cycloaddition of vinylallene and unactivated alkyne was developed. This tandem reaction provides access to bicyclic compounds containing a highly functionalized isotoluene or cyclohexenone structural motif, while only aromatic compounds were observed in related transition metal-catalyzed cycloadditions., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012)

Quasiracemic crystallization has been used to obtain high-resolution structures of two variants of the villin headpiece subdomain (VHP) that contain a pentafluorophenylalanine (F(5)Phe) residue in the hydrophobic core. In each case, the crystal contained the variant constructed from l-amino acids and the native sequence constructed from d-amino acids. We were motivated to undertake these studies by reports that racemic proteins crystallize more readily than homochiral forms and the prospect that quasiracemic crystallization would enable us to determine whether a polypeptide containing a noncanonical residue can closely mimic the tertiary structure of the native sequence. The results suggest that quasiracemic crystallization may prove to be generally useful for assessing mimicry of naturally evolved protein folding patterns by polypeptides that contain unnatural side-chain or backbone subunits.

The title compound, C(28)H(30)N(2), is a symmetrical 2:2 product from the condensation of indole and cyclo-hexa-none. It is the only reported 5,11-dihydro-indolo[3,2-b]carbazole compound in which the spiro atoms are quaternary C atoms. Crystals were grown by vapor diffusion in a three-zone electric furnace. The mol-ecule resides on a crystallographic inversion center. The cyclo-hexyl rings are in a slightly distorted chair conformation, whereas the indole units and the spiro-carbons are coplanar within 0.014 Å.

The title compound, [Fe(C(5)H(5))(C(17)H(16)N(3)O(2))], crystallizes with an essentially eclipsed conformation of the cyclo-penta-dienyl (Cp) rings. The unsubstituted ring is disordered over two positions with the major component being present 90 (1)% of the time. The substituted Cp ring, the pyrazole ring and three atoms of the eth-oxy-carbonyl group form a conjugated π-system. These 13 atoms are coplanar within 0.09 Å.

The title zinc complex, [ZnCl(2)(C(18)H(22)N(4))], contains a bidentate 1,2-bis(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-ylmeth-yl)benz-ene ligand that binds to the zinc atom, forming a nine-membered metallocyclic ring. The geometry about the Zn atom is distorted tetra-hedral, with the largest deviation observed in the magnitude of the Cl-Zn-Cl angle. Similar distortions are observed in the cobalt analogue and related zinc compounds containing metallocyclic rings with more than six members. The copper analogue exhibits a more severe distortion of the metal coordination sphere than is observed in the title compound.

We have resolved the enantiomers of a series of chiral modified metallophthalocyaninato complexes of nickel bearing alkoxy groups at the 14 and 28 positions on what would otherwise be a normal phthalocyaninato ligand and conforming to the general formula [14,28-(RO)(2)Pc]Ni(ii), where R = Me, Et, or n-Pr. The complex for which R = n-Pr is reported here for the first time. Resolution of the enantiomers of these complexes was accomplished via HPLC utilizing an immobilized carbohydrate-based stationary phase, resulting in baseline resolution of peaks corresponding to enantiomers of the complexes, with R(s) values in excess of five. Isolation of milligram quantities of the complexes bearing methoxy and n-propoxy groups in high enantiomeric excess has been achieved via semi-preparative-scale HPLC on the same stationary phase. Resolved samples of these compounds do not appear to racemize at an appreciable rate, nor do they readily exchange alkoxy groups with alcohols while stirring in alcoholic solution. The spectroscopic details and the crystallographically-determined solid-state structure for the complex where R = n-Pr are reported, and are highly similar to those that have been observed for the previously reported analogues. It has been shown by NMR that the chirality and C(2) molecular symmetry of the complex bearing n-propoxy groups is maintained in solution.

In the title compound, [Au(2)(C(6)H(8)N(2)S(4))(C(18)H(15)P)(4)]·2CHCl(3), the digold complex resides on a crystallographic inversion center and co-crystallizes with two mol-ecules of chloro-form solvent. The piperazine-1,4-dicarbodithio-ate linker has an almost ideal chair conformation. The geometry about the gold atoms is severely distorted tetra-hedral punctuated by a very acute S-Au-S bite angle.

The para-aminobiphenyl compound [(η(6)-C(6)H(5))(C(6)H(4)-4-NH(2))]Cr(CO)(3) (1) has an arene-phenyl dihedral angle of 38.01(6)°, as determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and 34.7(11)°, as determined by DFT calculations. It undergoes haptotropic rearrangement at 140 °C in solution to form [(η(6)-C(6)H(4)-4-NH(2))(C(6)H(5))]Cr(CO)(3) (2), even though previous reports have suggested that such rearrangements should not be observed in compounds with arene-phenyl dihedral angles greater than 22°. NMR analysis gave a rate constant of k = 5.0 × 10(-5) s(-1) for the rearrangement of 1 to 2. The ortho-substituted analog [(η(6)-C(6)H(5))(C(6)H(4)-2-NH(2))]Cr(CO)(3) (3) has an arene-phenyl dihedral angle of 67.70(7)°, as determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and 51.9(10)°, as determined by DFT calculations. Surprisingly, even though it displays a more extreme canting of arene rings, 3 rearranges to [(η(6)-C(6)H(4)-2-NH(2))(C(6)H(5))]Cr(CO)(3) (4) at 140 °C in solution with a rate constant of k = 2.6 × 10(-4) s(-1). This approximately five-fold rate enhancement likely results from the ortho-amino group providing intramolecular stabilization for intermediates formed during the rearrangement.

Peptoids, or oligomers of N-substituted glycines, are a class of foldamers that have shown extraordinary functional potential since their inception nearly two decades ago. However, the generation of well-defined peptoid secondary structures remains a difficult task. This challenge is due, in part, to the lack of a thorough understanding of peptoid sequence-structure relationships and, consequently, an incomplete understanding of the peptoid folding process. We seek to delineate sequence-structure relationships through the systematic study of noncovalent interactions in peptoids and the design of novel amide side chains capable of such interactions. Herein, we report the synthesis and detailed structural analysis of a series of (S)-N-(1-naphthylethyl)glycine (Ns1npe) peptoid homo-oligomers by X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Four of these peptoids were found to adopt well-defined structures in the solid state, with dihedral angles similar to those observed in polyproline type I (PPI) peptide helices and in peptoids with α-chiral side chains. The X-ray crystal structure of a representative Ns1npe tetramer revealed an all cis-amide helix, with approximately three residues per turn, and a helical pitch of approximately 6.0 Å. 2D-NMR analysis of the length-dependent Ns1npe series showed that these peptoids have very high overall backbone amide K(cis/trans) values in acetonitrile, indicative of conformationally homogeneous structures in solution. Additionally, CD spectroscopy studies of the Ns1npe homo-oligomers in acetonitrile and methanol revealed a striking length-dependent increase in ellipticity per amide. These Ns1npe helices represent the most robust peptoid helices to be reported, and the incorporation of (S)-N-(1-naphthylethyl)glycines provides a new approach for the generation of stable helical structure in this important class of foldamers.

Rholling in the bicycles: a rhodium(I)-catalyzed cycloisomerization for the synthesis of bicyclic compounds containing a cycloheptatriene ring from linear alkenynes (see scheme; cod=1,5-cyclooctadiene) is proposed to proceed through 1,2-acyloxy migration, 6 π electrocyclization, migratory insertion, and reductive elimination. The amine title complex, [ZnCl(2)(C(7)H(13)N(3))], resulted from imine hydrolysis in a Schiff base compound. The Zn metal atom has a distorted tetra-hedral geometry with the most significant deviation identified in the magnitude of the N-Zn-N angle. This deviation stems from the participation of the Zn and N atoms in a six-membered metallocyclic ring. The latter is in an approximate screw-boat conformation. Two strong N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into ribbons propagating along the b-axis direction. The ribbons contain two second-order hydrogen-bonded motifs: a chain and a ring. The chain described by the graph set notation C(2) (2)(6) is formed by one hydrogen bond going in the forward direction (donor to acceptor) and the other in the backward direction (acceptor to donor). In the ring motif R(2) (2)(8), both hydrogen bonds propagate in the forward direction.

Photocatalytic reactions of enones using metal polypyridyl complexes proceed by very different reaction manifolds in the presence of either Lewis or Brønsted acid additives. Previous work from our lab demonstrated that photocatalytic [2+2] cycloadditions of enones required the presence of a Lewis acidic co-catalyst, presumably to activate the enone and stabilize the key radical anion intermediate. On the other hand, Brønsted acid activators alter this reactivity and instead promote reductive cyclization reactions of a variety of aryl and aliphatic enones via a neutral radical intermediate. These two distinct reactive intermediates give rise to transformations differing in the connectivity, stereochemistry, and oxidation state of their products. In addition, this reductive coupling method introduces a novel approach to the tin-free generation of β-ketoradicals that react with high diastereoselectivity and with the high functional group compatibility typical of radical cyclization reactions.

N-hydroxy amides can be found in many naturally occurring and synthetic compounds and are known to act as both strong proton donors and chelators of metal cations. We have initiated studies of peptoids, or N-substituted glycines which contain N-hydroxy amide side chains to investigate the potential effects of these functional groups on peptoid backbone amide rotamer equilibria and local conformations. We reasoned that the propensity of these functional groups to participate in hydrogen bonding could be exploited to enforce intramolecular or intermolecular interactions that yield new peptoid structures. Here, we report the design, synthesis, and detailed conformational analysis of a series of model N-hydroxy peptoids. These peptoids were readily synthesized, and their structures were analyzed in solution by 1D and 2D NMR and in the solid-state by X-ray crystallography. The N-hydroxy amides were found to strongly favor trans conformations with respect to the peptoid backbone in chloroform. More notably, unique sheet-like structures held together via intermolecular hydrogen bonds were observed in the X-ray crystal structures of an N-hydroxy amide peptoid dimer, which to our knowledge represent the first structure of this type reported for peptoids. These results suggest that the N-hydroxy amide can be utilized to control both local backbone geometries and longer-range intermolecular interactions in peptoids, and represents a new functional group in the peptoid design toolbox.

EuS nanocrystals (NCs) were doped with Gd resulting in an enhancement of their magnetic properties. New EuS and GdS single source precursors (SSPs) were synthesized, characterized, and employed to synthesize Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs by decomposition in oleylamine and trioctylphosphine at 290 °C. The doped NCs were characterized using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy, which support the uniform distribution of Gd dopants through electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed the dopant ions in Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs to be predominantly Gd(3+). NCs with a variety of doping ratios of Gd (0 ≤ x < 1) were systematically studied using vibrating sample magnetometry and the observed magnetic properties were correlated with the Gd doping levels (x) as quantified with ICP-AES. Enhancement of the Curie temperature (T(C)) was observed for samples with low Gd concentrations (x ≤ 10%) with a maximum T(C) of 29.4 K observed for NCs containing 5.3% Gd. Overall, the observed T(C), Weiss temperature (θ), and hysteretic behavior correspond directly to the doping level in Eu(1-x)Gd(x)S NCs and the trends qualitatively follow those previously reported for bulk and thin film samples.

In the title compound, (C(2)H(8)NO)(2)[PdCl(4)], 2-hy-droxy-ethanaminium cations and tetra-chloridopalladate(II) dianions crystallize in a 2:1 ratio with the anion residing on a crystallographic inversion center. The cations and anions are linked in a complex three-dimensional framework by three types of strong hydrogen bonds (N-H⋯O, N-H⋯Cl, and O-H⋯Cl), which form various ring and chain patterns of up to the ternary graph-set level.

Pd-catalyzed C-H oxidation reactions often require the use of oxidants other than O(2). Here we demonstrate a ligand-based strategy to replace benzoquinone with O(2) as the stoichiometric oxidant in Pd-catalyzed allylic C-H acetoxylation. Use of 4,5-diazafluorenone (1) as an ancillary ligand for Pd(OAc)(2) enables terminal alkenes to be converted to linear allylic acetoxylation products in good yields and selectivity under 1 atm O(2). Mechanistic studies have revealed that 1 facilitates C-O reductive elimination from a π-allyl-Pd(II) intermediate, thereby eliminating the requirement for benzoquinone in this key catalytic step.

The title compound, [CoCl(2)(C(11)H(20)ClN(2))(2)], forms two intramolecular hydrogen bonds [graph set S(5)] between the N atoms of the pyrazole ligands and the chloride ligands. This hydrogen-bonding motif is uncommon among related compounds but occurs here because of the bulk of tert-butyl substituents on the pyrazole ligands which shield the central metal atom to a significantly larger extent than pyrazole ligands with smaller 3,5-substituents.

Helices are the most extensively studied secondary structures formed by β-peptide foldamers. Among the five known β-peptide helices, the 12-helix is particularly interesting because the internal hydrogen bond orientation and macrodipole are analogous to those of α-peptide helices (α-helix and 3(10)-helix). The β-peptide 12-helix is defined by i, i+3 C═O···H-N backbone hydrogen bonds and promoted by β-residues with a five-membered ring constraint. The 12-helical scaffold has been used to generate β-peptides with specific biological functions, for which diverse side chains must be properly placed along the backbone and, upon folding, properly arranged in space. Only two crystal structures of 12-helical β-peptides have previously been reported, both for homooligomers of trans-2-aminocyclopentanecarboxylic acid (ACPC). Here we report five additional crystal structures of 12-helical β-peptides, all containing residues that bear side chains. Four of the crystallized β-peptides include trans-4,4-dimethyl-2-aminocyclopentanecarboxylic acid (dm-ACPC) residues, and the fifth contains a β(3)-hPhe residue. These five β-peptides adopt fully folded 12-helical conformations in the solid state. The new crystal structures, along with previously reported data, allow a detailed characterization of the 12-helical conformation; average backbone torsion angles of β-residues and helical parameters are derived. These structural parameters are found to be similar to those for i, i+3 C═O···H-N hydrogen-bonded helices formed by other peptide backbones generated from α- and/or β-amino acids. The similarity between the conformational behavior of dm-ACPC and ACPC is consistent with previous NMR-based conclusions that 4,4-disubstituted ACPC derivatives are compatible with 12-helical folding. In addition, our data show how a β(3)-residue is accommodated in the 12-helix, thus enhancing understanding of the diverse conformational behavior of this flexible class of β-amino acids.

A variety of multinuclear NMR techniques, in combination with X-ray diffraction methods, were used to probe the solution structure of α-aryl lithium enolates of bis(4-fluorobenzyl) ketone (1-H), phenyl 4-fluorobenzyl ketone (2-H), and N,N-dimethyl 4-fluorophenylacetamide (3-H) in ethereal solvents and in the presence of cosolvent additives PMDTA, TMTAN, HMPA, and cryptand [2.1.1]. All three enolates were dimers in THF solution, and were converted to monomers by the triamine additives, PMDTA and TMTAN. The exchange of the triamine-solvated monomers with their ethereal-solvated dimer counterparts was probed by using dynamic NMR (DNMR). The cosolvent HMPA formed monomers along with minor amounts of lithiate species, (RO)(2)Li(-) and (RO)(3)Li(2-), which were also observed when cryptand [2.1.1] was used as a cosolvent, or when mixed lithium-phosphazenium enolate solutions were prepared. Dynamic exchange of lithiate species was investigated by DNMR spectroscopy. The barrier to rotation of the conjugated 4-fluorophenyl ring of these diverse enolate structures was measured and found to be consistent with a resonance picture where lower aggregation states lead to increased delocalization of negative charge. The lithium enolate aggregates identified were compared to the "naked" α-4-fluorophenyl enolates generated with the phosphazene base P4. The barrier to aryl ring rotation was 2.7 kcal/mol higher for the phosphazenium enolate 3-Li·P4H compared to the dimer (3-Li)(2). Structural characterization of a phosphazenium enolate through X-ray crystallography was obtained for the first time. Additional aspects of the Schwesinger base P4 were investigated which included characterization of the solution exchange behavior of the protonated and unprotonated forms as well as determination of the solid state structure by X-ray diffraction.

The ability to design foldamers that mimic the defined structural motifs of natural biopolymers is critical for the continued development of functional biomimetic molecules. Peptoids, or oligomers of N-substituted glycine, represent a versatile class of foldamers capable of folding into defined secondary and tertiary structures. However, the rational design of discretely folded polypeptoids remains a challenging task, due in part to an incomplete understanding of the covalent and noncovalent interactions that direct local peptoid folding. We have found that simple, peptoid monomer model systems allow for the effective isolation of individual interactions within the peptoid backbone and side chains and can facilitate the study of the role of these interactions in restricting local peptoid conformation. Herein, we present an analysis of a set of peptoid monomers and an oligomer containing N-aryl side chains capable of hydrogen bonding with the peptoid backbone. These model peptoids were found to exhibit well-defined local conformational preferences, allowing for control of the ω, ϕ, and ψ dihedral angles adopted by the systems. Fundamental studies of the peptoid monomers enabled the design and synthesis of an acyclic peptoid reverse-turn structure, in which N-aryl side chains outfitted with ortho-hydrogen bond donors were hypothesized to play a critical role in the stabilization of the turn. This trimeric peptoid was characterized by X-ray crystallography and 2D NMR spectroscopy and was shown to adopt a unique acyclic peptoid reverse-turn conformation. Further analysis of this turn revealed an n→π*(C═O) interaction within the peptoid backbone, which represents the first reported example of this type of stereoelectronic interaction occurring exclusively within a polypeptoid backbone. The installation of N-aryl side chains capable of hydrogen bonding into peptoids is straightforward and entirely compatible with current solid-phase peptoid synthesis methodologies. As such, we anticipate that the strategic incorporation of these N-aryl side chains should facilitate the construction of peptoids capable of adopting discrete structural motifs, both turnlike and beyond, and will facilitate the continued development of well-folded peptoids.

The title compound, [PdCl(C(14)H(23)N(5))]Cl·0.25H(2)O, is a pseudopolymorph of the previously reported compound [PdCl(C(14)H(23)N(5))]Cl·2H(2)O [de Mendoza et al. (2006 ▶). Acta Cryst. E62, m2934-m2936]. The cationic complex and chloride anion are disordered over two positions each in a 0.584 (4):0.416 (4) ratio. The geometry about the Pd atom is distorted square-planar. The pyrazole rings are almost perpendicular, forming a dihedral angle of 86.6 (6)° to each other, to mitigate steric conflict between their methyl groups.

Prolyl 4-hydroxylases install a hydroxyl group in the 4R configuration on the gamma-carbon atom of certain (2S)-proline (Pro) residues in tropocollagen, elastin, and other proteins to form (2S,4R)-4-hydroxyproline (Hyp). The gauche effect arising from this prevalent post-translational modification enforces a C(gamma)-exo ring pucker and stabilizes the collagen triple helix. The Hyp diastereomer (2S,4S)-4-hydroxyproline (hyp) has not been observed in a protein, despite the ability of electronegative 4S substituents to enforce the more common C(gamma)-endo ring pucker of Pro. Here, we use density functional theory, spectroscopy, crystallography, and calorimetry to explore the consequences of hyp incorporation on protein stability using a collagen model system. We find that the 4S-hydroxylation of Pro to form hyp does indeed enforce a C(gamma)-endo ring pucker but a transannular hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl moiety and the carbonyl of hyp distorts the main-chain torsion angles that typically accompany a C(gamma)-endo ring pucker. This same transannular hydrogen bond enhances an n-->pi* interaction that stabilizes the trans conformation of the peptide bond preceding hyp, endowing hyp with the unusual combination of a C(gamma)-endo ring pucker and high trans/cis ratio. O-Methylation of hyp to form (2S,4S)-4-methoxyproline (mop) eliminates the transannular hydrogen bond and restores a prototypical C(gamma)-endo pucker. mop residues endow the collagen triple helix with much more conformational stability than do hyp residues. These findings highlight the critical importance of the configuration of the hydroxyl group installed on C(gamma) of proline residues.

The reaction between NO and L(2)(H(2)O)Rh(2+) (L(2) = meso-Me(6)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) generates a sky-blue L(2)(H(2)O)RhNO(2+), a {RhNO}(8) complex. The crystal structure of the perchlorate salt features a bent Rh-N-O moiety (122.1(11)(o)), short axial Rh-NO bond (1.998(12) A) and a strongly elongated Rh-OH(2) (2.366(6) A) trans to NO. Acidic aqueous solutions of L(2)(H(2)O)RhNO(2+) are stable for weeks, and are inert toward oxygen. The complex is oxidized rapidly and reversibly with Ru(bpy)(3)(3+), k(f) = (1.9 +/- 0.1) x 10(5) M(-1) s(-1), to an intermediate believed to be L(2)(H(2)O)RhNO(3+). This unprecedented {RhNO}(7) species has a lifetime of about 90 s at room temperature at pH 0. The reverse reaction between L(2)(H(2)O)RhNO(3+) and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) has k(r) = (1.5 +/- 0.4) x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1). The kinetic data define the equilibrium constant for the L(2)(H(2)O)RhNO(2+)/Ru(bpy)(3)(3+) reaction, K = k(f)/k(r) = 0.13, and yield a reduction potential for the L(2)(H(2)O)RhNO(3+/2+) couple of 1.31 V. Both the redox thermodynamics of L(2)(H(2)O)RhNO(3+/2+) and the kinetics of the reactions with Ru(bpy)(3)(3+/2+) are quite similar to those of uncoordinated NO(+)/NO.

We report the first high-resolution structural data for the beta/gamma-peptide 13-helix (i,i+3 C=O...H-N H-bonds), a secondary structure that is formed by oligomers with a 1:1 alternation of beta- and gamma-amino acid residues. Our characterization includes both crystallographic and 2D NMR data. Previous studies suggested that beta/gamma-peptides constructed from conformationally flexible residues adopt a different helical secondary structure in solution. Our design features preorganized beta- and gamma-residues, which strongly promote 13-helical folding by the 1:1 beta/gamma backbone.

The title compound C(9)H(9)BrO(3), was synthesized by the regioselective bromination of 4-meth-oxy-phenyl-acetic acid using bromine in acetic acid in a 84% yield. In the mol-ecular structure, the meth-oxy group is almost coplanar with the phenyl ring within 0.06 Å; the acetic acid substituent is tilted by 78.15 (7)° relative to the ring. The C-C-C angles at the OMe, acetyl and Br substituents are 118.2 (2), 118.4 (2) and 121.5 (2)°, respectively, indicating that the Br atom is electron-withdrawing, whereas the other substituents possess electron-donating properties. In the crystal, the mol-ecules form centrosymmetric strongly O-H⋯O hydrogen-bonded dimers of the type R(2) (2)(8).

X-ray crystallographic structures are reported for 1(Me)(2+)(SbCl(6)(-))(2) x 2 CH(3)CN, 2(Et)(2+)(SbF(6)(-))(2) x 2 CH(3)CN x 2 CH(2)Cl(2), and 1(iPr)(2+)(SbF(6)(-))(2), which also contained unresolved solvent and is in a completely different conformation than the methyl- and ethyl-substituted compounds. A quite different structure of 1(Me)(2+)(SbF(6)(-))(2) than that previously published was obtained upon crystallizing it from a mixture rich in monocation. It does not contain close intramolecular PD(+),PD(+) contacts but has close intermolecular ones. Low temperature NMR spectra of 1(Me)(2+) and 1(Et)(2+) in 2:1 CD(3)OD/CD(3)CN showed that both contain three conformations of all-gauche NCCC unit material with close intramolecular PD(+),PD(+) contacts. In addition to the both PD(+) ring syn and anti material that had been seen in the crystal structure of 1(Me)(2+)(SbF(6)(-))(2) x 2 CH(3)CN published previously, an unsymmetrical conformation having one PD(+) ring syn and the other anti (abbreviated uns) was seen, and the relative amounts of these conformations were significantly different for 1(Me)(2+) and 1(Et)(2+). Calculations that correctly obtain the relative amounts of both the methyl- and ethyl-substituted material as well as changes in the optical spectra between 1(Me)(2+) and 1(Et)(2+), which contains much less of the uns conformation, are reported.

The mixed valence bishydrazine radical cation 6(+), obtained by oxidation of 2,6-bi-(2'-oxa-6'-azaadamantane-6'-yl)-2,6-diazaadamantane-2,6-diyl (6) with silver or nitrosonium salts, has been prepared and studied. 6 is obtained along with lesser amounts of the trishydrazine, some of the tetrahydrazine, and apparently traces of the pentahydrazine upon reaction of deprotonated 2-oxa-6-azaadamantane with 2,6-dichloro-2,6-diazaadamantane. The EPR spectrum of 6(+) shows that its charge is localized on one hydrazine unit on the EPR time scale. It shows a Hush-type Robin-Day class II mixed valence band in its optical spectrum despite the fact that the nitrogen lone pairs are held in a perpendicular geometry that would lead to no electronic interaction between the nitrogen atoms that are separated by only four sigma bonds if its nitrogens were planar. The electron transfer distance that is estimated from the calculated dipole moment of 6(+) is the same as that obtained using the average distance between the electrons of the triplet state of the dication 6(2+), calculated from its dipolar EPR splitting, as a model for the electron transfer distance of 6(+), 3.7 A. Using Hush's Gaussian approximation for the optical spectrum with this electron transfer distance produces an estimate of the electronic coupling V(ab) through the saturated bridge of about 400 cm(-1), which is consistent with the observed EPR spectrum of 6(+). From the observed dipolar splitting, the trishydrazine diradical dication has its remote hydrazine units oxidized, although the monocation presumably forms at the central hydrazine unit, which lacks substitution by the more electron-withdrawing oxygen atoms.

Covalent bond tables are used to generate hydrogen-bond pattern designator symbols for the crystallographically characterized title compounds. 2-(Pyrazol-1-yl)ethylammonium chloride, C(5)H(10)N(3)(+).Cl(-), (I), has three unique, strong, charge-assisted hydrogen bonds of the types N-H...Cl and N-H...N that form unary through ternary levels of graph-set interactions. Diaquadichloridobis(2-hydroxyethylammonium)cobalt(II) dichloride, [CoCl(2)(C(2)H(8)NO)(2)(H(2)O)(2)]Cl(2), (II), forms five unique charge-assisted hydrogen bonds of the types O-H...Cl and N-H...Cl. These form graph-set patterns up to the quinary level. The Co complex in (II) resides at a crystallographic inversion center; thus the number of hydrogen bonds to consider doubles due to their G-equivalence, and the handling of such a case is demonstrated.

12-Crown-4 ether (12C4) and LiClO(4) combine to form the ionic title compound, [Li(2)(C(8)H(16)O(4))(3)](ClO(4))(2), which is com-posed of discrete Li/12C4 cations and perchlorate anions. In the [Li(2)(12C4)(3)](2+) cation there are two peripheral 12C4 ligands, which each form four Li-O bonds with only one Li(+) atom. Additionally there is a central 12C4 in which diagonal O atoms form one Li-O bond each with both Li(+) atoms. Therefore each Li(+) atom is penta-coordinated in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry, forming four longer bonds to the O atoms on the peripheral 12C4 and one shorter bond to an O atom of the central 12C4. The cation occupies a crystallographic inversion centre located at the center of the ring of the central 12C4 ligand. The Li(+) atom lies above the cavity of the peripheral 12C4 by 0.815 (2) Å because it is too large to fit in the cavity.

In the title compound, [Li(C(8)H(16)O(4))(CD(3)CN)]ClO(4), the Li atom is penta-coordinate. The O atoms of the 12-crown-4 ether form the basal plane, whereas the N atom of the trideutero-aceto-nitrile occupies the apical position. The Li(+) atom is displaced by 0.794 (6) Å toward the apical position from the plane formed by the O atoms because the Li(+) atom is too large to fit in the cavity of the 12-crown-4 ether, resulting in a distorted square-pyramidal geometry about the Li(+) atom.

A catalytic enantioselective syn-1,4-bromolactonization of conjugated (Z)-enynes was reported. Diastereomeric ratios >20:1 and up to 99% enantiomeric excesses were observed. Di-, tri-, and tetra-substituted bromoallenes were prepared together with lactone heterocycles efficiently and stereoselectively. Preliminary investigations suggest that the chiral catalyst may serve as a bifunctional reagent by interacting with both a carboxylic acid nucleophile and NBS electrophile.

The title compound, [AuCl(C(18)H(21)P)], a monomeric two-coordinate gold(I) complex, has been characterized at 100 K as two distinct monoclinic polymorphs, one from a single crystal, (Is), and one from a pseudo-merohedrally twinned crystal, (It). The molecular structures in the two monoclinic [P2(1)/n for (Is) and P2(1)/c for (It)] polymorphs are similar; however, the packing arrangements in the two lattices differ considerably. The structure of (It) is pseudo-merohedrally twinned by a twofold rotation about the a* axis.

Tripod amphiphiles are designed to promote the solubilization and stabilization of intrinsic membrane proteins in aqueous solution; facilitation of crystallization is a long-range goal. Membrane proteins are subjects of extensive interest because of their critical biological roles, but proteins of this type can be difficult to study because of their low solubility in water. The nonionic detergents that are typically used to achieve solubility can have the unintended effect of causing protein denaturation. Tripod amphiphiles differ from conventional detergents in that the lipophilic segment contains a branchpoint, and previous work has shown that this unusual amphiphilic architecture can be advantageous relative to traditional detergent structures. Here, we report the crystal structures of several tripod amphiphiles that contain an N-oxide hydrophilic group. The data suggest that tripods can adapt themselves to a nonpolar surface by altering the hydrophobic appendage that projects toward that surface and their overall orientation relative to that surface. Although it is not possible to draw firm conclusions regarding amphiphile association in solution from crystallographic data, trends observed among the packing patterns reported here suggest design strategies to be implemented in future studies.
