Abstract: International audience; Memory size limits the number of instances available in memory at a single time. This limitation affects applications that require large graphs of objects. Moose is an example of such applications. Moose is a tool used in software analysis. It parses and models software code in an object graph. Later it performs multiple operations (i.e., measuring, querying, mining and analysing the code) on such models. However, not all the information in the model is present, as the model is intended to be used with different applications and programming languages (not all applications or programming languages uses the same elements). Analysis of different models shows that between 30 and 50% of memory is wasted. Analysis models produced in an industrial context reveals that models composed of several millions of instances used up to 2Gb memory. In this work, we propose new slots and their combination to transparently optimize memory consumption: NilAwareS-lot optimizes automatically nils and LazyInitializationSlot handles the case where an empty collection is required and use by many clients. We show that performing a limited amount of changes, we improved the memory footprint of Moose models in around 30%. We also show that our solution has comparable performance with an ad hoc solution, but without the need for boilerplate code. To implement this solution, we leverage the existing Pharo support of slots, write barriers and efficient forwarders.

Abstract: In uncontrolled settings occlusions occur and interfere with facial expressions recognition task. It is interesting to limit the number of regions required for face expression recognition task in order to moderate the occlusion interference. We propose a weighting scheme that ranks the facial regions needed to recognize expressions. Weights are calculated based on the contribution of each region to boost recognition in presence of various occlusions. Intelligent facial frameworks, based on region ranks are computed in presence of static occlusions (such as glasses, hair, hand on the face). Evaluations conducted using motion information as the underlying descriptor show that our approach maintains, per expression, very good recognition rates under various static occlusions occurring in uncontrolled settings.

Abstract: International audience; This paper introduces an original video dataset containing dynamic index finger gestures in a mobile context. The dataset consists of 746 video sequences of 6 index finger gestures: left, right, up, down, tap, circle. The video sequences are obtained from a mobile phone's rear camera equipped with a wide angle lens, thus the dataset features particular challenges due to background motion and the distorted field of view. We present a baseline method that uses optical flow features in the form of a histogram to represent the motion information in the video sequences.

Abstract: Objective We lack consensus in assessing patient performance during exercises. This assessment is currently left to the physiotherapist's personal judgement. We aimed to study the agreement among physiotherapists in rating patient performance during exercises recommended for chronic low back pain (LBP). Material/Patients and methods A vignette-based method was used. We first identified in the literature 10 exercises recommended for LBP, including 6 strengthening and 4 stretching exercises. Then, 42 patients with chronic LBP participating in a rehabilitation program were videotaped during their performance of 1 of the 10 exercises. A vignette was an exercise video preceded by clinical information. Ten physiotherapists from primary and tertiary care viewed the 42 vignettes, and rated patient's performance from 0 (worse performance) to 10 (excellent performance) by considering the position and duration of the contraction or stretching. Participants were asked 1 month later to rate the same vignettes in another random order and with blinding to their first answers. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were computed to assess inter- and intra-rater agreement. Results The overall inter-rater agreement was fair (ICC 0.48 [95% CI: 0.33–0.56]) but was better for stretching exercises (0.55 [0.35–0.64]) than strengthening exercises (0.42 [0.20–0.52]) and for tertiary care physiotherapists (0.66 [0.54–0.76]) than primary-care physiotherapists (0.28 [0.09–0.37]). During the second scoring of the vignettes, the agreement increased to 0.70 [0.58–0.77]. The intra-rater agreement was overall good (0.72 [0.57–0.81] to 0.88 [0.79–0.94]). It was better for stretching exercises (from 0.68 [0.46–0.81] to 0.96 [0.91–0.98]) than strengthening exercises (from 0.68 [0.38–0.84] to 0.82 [0.56–0.92]). Discussion/Conclusion The agreement in rating patient performance of exercises for LBP is good among physiotherapists trained in managing LBP but is low among non-trained physiotherapists. This method of assessment can be used to assess patients’ performance in clinical studies evaluating the effectiveness of exercise therapy in LBP, but also in real life to determine the adequate number of physiotherapy sessions required and to help better understand the unlearning phenomenon of exercises.

Abstract: International audience; Virtual machines, besides the interpreter and just-in-time compiler optimization facilities, also include a set of primitive operations that the client language can use. Some of these are essential and cannot be performed in any other way. Others are optional: they can be expressed in the client language but are often implemented in the virtual machine to improve performance when the just-in-time compiler is unable to do so (start-up performance, speculative optimizations not implemented or not mature enough, etc.). In a hybrid runtime, where code is executed by an interpreter and a just-in-time compiler, the implementor can choose to implement optional primitives in the client language , in the virtual machine implementation language (typically C or C++), or on top of the just-in-time compiler back-end. This raises the question of the maintenance and performance trade-offs of the different alternatives. As a case study, we implemented the String comparison optional primitive in each case. This paper describes the different implementations , discusses the maintenance cost of each of them and evaluates for different string sizes the execution time in Cog, a Smalltalk virtual machine.

Abstract: Most of the articles in the literature based on hedonic analysis focus on the private characteristics provided by accommodations. And if the area where is located the hotel is taken into account with the identification of public good, it is exclusively on the positive side. The use of Geolocalized Data Information (GIS) with a hedonic analysis permits to measure both negative and positive effects on prices. The aim of this article is to provide an indirect assessment of the detrimental impact of industrial legacy on the tourism attractiveness of a region by studying its effect on hotel rates. The hedonic method has been used to decompose hotel prices in Nord-Pas de Calais, an old industrial region in north of France, into the implicit prices of a set of attributes, both private and public, including the repellent public attributes inherited from the industrial past of that region.

Abstract: International audience; Object-oriented modelling languages such as EMOF are often used to specify domain specific meta-models. However, these modelling languages lack the ability to describe behavior or operational semantics. Several approaches have used a subset of Java mixed with OCL as executable meta-languages. In this experience report we show how we use Smalltalk as an executable meta-language in the context of the Moose reengineering environment. We present how we implemented EMOF and its behavioral aspects. Over the last decade we validated this approach through incrementally building a meta-described reengineering environment. Such an approach bridges the gap between a code-oriented view and a meta-model driven one. It avoids the creation of yet another language and reuses the infrastructure and run-time of the underlying implementation language. It offers an uniform way of letting developers focus on their tasks while at the same time allowing them to meta-describe their domain model. The advantage of our approach is that developers use the same tools and environment they use for their regular tasks. Still the approach is not Smalltalk specific but can be applied to language offering an introspective API such as Ruby, Python, CLOS, Java and C#.

Abstract: International audience; VMs are complex pieces of software that implement programming language semantics in an efficient, portable, and secure way. Unfortunately, mainstream VMs provide applications with few mechanisms to alter execution semantics or memory management at run time. We argue that this limits the evolvability and maintainability of running systems for both, the application domain, e.g., to support unforeseen requirements, and the VM domain, e.g., to modify the organization of objects in memory. This work explores the idea of incorporating reflective capabilities into the VM domain and analyzes its impact in the context of software adaptation tasks. We characterize the notion of a fully reflective VM, a kind of VM that provides means for its own observability and modifiability at run time. This enables programming languages to adapt the underlying VM to changing requirements. We propose a reference architecture for such VMs and present TruffleMATE as a prototype for this architecture. We evaluate the mechanisms TruffleMATE provides to deal with unanticipated dynamic adaptation scenarios for security, optimization, and profiling aspects. In contrast to existing alternatives, we observe that TruffleMATE is able to handle all scenarios, using less than 50 lines of code for each, and without interfering with the application's logic.

Abstract: International audience; In mobile touchscreebn interaction, an important challenge is to find solutions to balance the size of individual widgets against the number of widgets needed during interaction. In this work, to address display space limitations, we explore the design of invisible off-screen toolbars (ether-toolbars) that leverage computer vision to expand application features by placing widgets adjacent to the display screen. We show how simple computer vision algorithms can be combined with a natural human ability to estimate physical placing to support highly accurate targeting. Our ether-toolbar design promises targeting accuracy approximating on-screen widget accuracy while significantly expanding the interaction space of mobile devices. Through two experiments, we examine off-screen content placement metaphors and off-screen precision of participants accessing these toolbars. From the data of the second experiment, we provide a basic model that reflects how users perceive mobile surroundings for ether-widgets and validate it. We also demonstrate a prototype system consisting of an inexpensive 3D printed mount for a mirror that supports ether-toolbar implementations. Finally, we discuss the implications of our work and potential design extensions that can increase the usability and the utility of ether-toolbars.

Abstract: International audience; VMs are complex pieces of software that implement programming language semantics in an efficient, portable, and secure way. Unfortunately, mainstream VMs provide applications with few mechanisms to alter execution semantics or memory management at run time. We argue that this limits the evolvability and maintainability of running systems for both, the application domain, e.g., to support unforeseen requirements, and the VM domain, e.g., to modify the organization of objects in memory. This work explores the idea of incorporating reflective capabilities into the VM domain and analyzes its impact in the context of software adaptation tasks. We characterize the notion of a fully reflective VM, a kind of VM that provides means for its own observability and modifiability at run time. This enables programming languages to adapt the underlying VM to changing requirements. We propose a reference architecture for such VMs and present TruffleMATE as a prototype for this architecture. We evaluate the mechanisms TruffleMATE provides to deal with unanticipated dynamic adaptation scenarios for security, optimization, and profiling aspects. In contrast to existing alternatives, we observe that TruffleMATE is able to handle all scenarios, using less than 50 lines of code for each, and without interfering with the application's logic.

Abstract: In this study, the activity of 18 non-carbapenem antibiotics was evaluated against 100 extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-Ec) and 50 ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-Kp) isolated from urinary tract infections and bacteraemia in 2016. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined using reference methods and the susceptibility profiles were defined according to European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) 2017 recommendations. All of the ESBL-Ec isolates were susceptible to ceftazidime/avibactam and a great majority of them were susceptible to fosfomycin (98%), piperacillin/tazobactam (97%), amikacin (97%) and nitrofurantoin (96%). Mecillinam, cefoxitin and ceftolozane/tazobactam remained active against 92%, 83% and 78% of the ESBL-Ec isolates, respectively. Moreover, 100%, 94% and 90% of the ESBL-Kp tested were susceptible to ceftazidime/avibactam, amikacin and mecillinam, respectively. This study showed that there are non-carbapenem options (including orally administrable drugs) for the treatment of all of the situations of ESBL-Ec or ESBL-Kp infections, with ceftazidime/avibactam being the most efficient alternative.

Abstract: This paper relates social mobility and social stratification to the structure of higher education. We develop an intergenerational model which shows that a two-tier higher education characterised by a division between elite and standard universities can be a key factor in generating permanent social stratification, social immobility and self-reproduction of the ‘elite’. In our approach, low mobility at the top is essentially explained by the differences in quality and in selection between elite and standard universities. A key result is that the wider the quality gap and the difference in per-student expenditures between elite and standard universities, the less social mobility. This is because a larger quality gap reinforces the weight of family backgrounds at the expense of personal ability. Our simulations show that this impact can be large. These findings provide theoretical bases for the differences in social mobility at the top observed between advanced countries.

Abstract: International audience; The recent crisis has given rise to proposals for the creation of a European unemployment insurance system. We simulate an EU-wide mechanism under various scenarios, varying methods of financing (common or country-specific contribution rates) and triggers for pay-outs (all time or contingent clauses). We analyse the impact of the system using different measures of stabilization under different fiscal multipliers. A system operating during bad times (periods where the increase in unemployment is large) would reduce GDP growth variability but also growth correlation among member countries. Hence, there is a trade-off between stabilization and synchronization of national business cycles.

Abstract: International audience; Face alignment is an essential task for many applications. Its objective is to locate feature points on the face, in order to identify its geometric structure. Under unconstrained conditions, the different variations that may occur in the visual context, together with the instability of face detection, make it a difficult problem to solve. While many methods have been proposed, their performances under these constraints are still not satisfactory. In this article, we claim that face alignment should be studied using image sequences rather than still images, as it has been done so far. We show the importance of taking into consideration the temporal information under unconstrained conditions.

Abstract: In this paper, we explore a novel application domain for SMT solvers: configuration problems. Configuration problems are everywhere and particularly in product lines, where different yet similar products (e.g., cars or customizable software) are built from a shared set of assets. Designing a product line requires enumerating the different product features and the constraints that determine their valid combinations. Various categories of constraint solvers exist, but SMT solvers appear to be a solution of choice for configuration problems. This is mostly due to their high efficiency and expressiveness which have already proved useful in a variety of practical applications. In this paper, we recall what configuration problems are, describe a language to represent them, and map from configuration problems to the satisfiability problem over SMT theories. 1 Variability Modelling and Configuration Problem Product lines have become an integral part of modern industry, be it in the manufacturing, the service or the software sectors [20]. Many kinds of products such as cars, insurance contracts or operating systems are developed as assemblies and customizations of reusable components, called configurations. Some configurations are valid, some are not, depending on numerous constraints including physical, mechanical, business, legal and design constraints. Moreover, manufacturers have an economic incentive, often dubbed with a legal obligation, in making sure that every possible configuration will result in a viable, safe, secure and useable product. Languages exist in which configuration problems can be encoded. These are often called variability modeling languages. Software tools have been built to automate all sorts of reasoning on variability models so as to uncover errors and inconsistencies [2]. Cars are probably the most well-known example of a configurable product. Cars can be equipped with different types of engines, transmissions and gearboxes. Similarly, different bodyworks (sedan, break, sport, cabriolet, etc.), paints, wheel types, and dozens of other options are available for most recent models. When designing a new car model, the manufacturer has to establish a list the various possible options and all the applicable configuration constraints. Some options are obviously incompatible (e.g. a cabriolet cannot have a moonroof), but dependencies among certain options can be subtle (e.g. an integrated GPS requires a color screen, which in turn requires a multifunction steering wheel). To build a car configurator similar to those found on the websites of car manufacturers, all these constraints need to be taken into account in order to guarantee that the final configuration Pascal Fontaine, Amit Goel (eds.); SMT 2012, pp. 107–117 107 An SMT-based Approach to Automated Configuration R. Michel et al. will correspond to a car (1) that can actually be built and (2) that the manufacturer wishes to sell. When the variability model of a new car has been produced, the manufacturer can use it to verify properties of the products that can be derived, e.g., “Do all LPG cars also include a regular gas tank?”, “Is there any equipment presented to the buyer as an option that is in fact available in all models by default anyways?”, etc. Configurators are interactive software tools that record user choices and compute their implications automatically, e.g. update the price of the car, or automatically select / disable related options. For example, if the user selects ‘cabriolet’, the moonroof option should be either hidden or grayed out. Some configurators even provide a short explanation telling why the option is unavailable. All this needs to be done efficiently in order not to annoy users. The aforementioned configurator features are often referred to as choice propagation and conflict explanation. Systematic solutions based on constraint solvers exist to handle these problems. However, constraint handling in configurators is still often developed in ad-hoc manner, i.e. without the help of a solver. This is time-consuming and error-prone. Moreover, maintaining ad-hoc configurators is difficult as the constraints evolve and these are often scattered in many different parts of the code. Variability modelling languages can be seen as high-level constraint programming languages that address this challenge. They allow one to describe components and constraints in a declarative and natural way. Variability models are then handled by provably reliable constraint solvers to check that the requested configurations are valid. Over the years, researchers have come up with different approaches to that problem using different types of solvers (SAT, BDD, CSP, etc.) and techniques which we describe in the next section. To the best of our knowledge, SMT solvers have never been used for interactive configuration. Most configuration problems are decisional, i.e., users have to decide whether a given option should be selected or not. However, sometimes configuration problems also involve objective functions for optimizing a certain feature or attribute, e.g., minimize the memory footprint of an operating system running on a mobile device. This paper only sets out to build the foundation for SMT-based decisional configuration and leaves the possible extensions thereof (e.g., SMT with optimization [19]) for future work. 2 Motivation for an SMT-based Approach Over the years, different technologies have been studied to reason about configuration problems. The simplest forms of decisional configuration problems are defined as sets of binary decisions governed by basic constraints such as implication and exclusion. Given their nature, these problems are usually modelled and encoded in plain propositional logic. As a result, their verification and the propagation of decisions during interactive configuration can be very efficiently handled by modern SAT solvers [3]. However, casting configuration problems into purely Boolean formulas is often too restrictive. Many problems actually impose constraints over integer, real or string types. Using the higher expressiveness of constraint satisfaction problem solvers (CSPs) [22] is a very common way to address this issue. Standard CSP solvers allow to use several variable types, including Boolean and numerical variables, but some also implement string constraints using regular expressions [12]. Moreover, configuration problems often include variables which can either be activated or deactivated depending on the value of other variables. This need led to the use of Conditional CSPs [7]. Abstract: Significance Vision is paramount for motor actions directed toward objects. Vision allows not only the identification of objects and their shape and spatial location, but also the adaptation of our movement when it arrives on the object. These findings show that vision deficits, as in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), can lead to reaching and grasping deficits. Purpose Few studies have investigated reaching and grasping in patients with AMD. They showed a deficit in the execution of motor actions in people with AMD, even though these people do not mention difficulties in their daily lives. The purpose of this study was to understand the nature of impairments in motor actions in patients. Methods We compared performance in two reach-and-grasp tasks determined by whether the participants (16 people with wet AMD and 17 age-matched control subjects) had time to look at the object before reaching and grasping it. Results The results show that the kinematic parameters of reach-and-grasp movements do not differ between groups when participants are provided time to look at the object before the movement. In contrast, performance in terms of movement duration, acceleration time, time to reach the maximum grip aperture, and the maximum velocity differ between patients and control subjects when the object is displayed immediately before the movement. Conclusions The motor perturbations observed in people with AMD in previous studies seem to result from difficulties in target identification rather than from visuomotor deficits.

Abstract: International audience; Legacy software systems are valuable assets for organisations. From time to time, renewing legacy software system architecture becomes necessary in order to offer them a new future. Rearchitecting a complex legacy software system is a difficult task. It involves understanding and aggregating a large set of data (the entire source code, dependencies , etc.). Understanding a software system is a matter of identifying the concepts that are implemented in the source code and organizing these concepts in a shared logical view of the system (e.g. an architectural view). This paper presents the approach used in a real industrial rearchitecting project of a complex legacy software system. We explain how concepts were modelled and mapped to the source code through entities called tags. We show how these tags were used by engineers and what tools were created to help them.

Abstract: This research confronts the concerns surrounding the professionalisation of psychiatric and mental health nurses. It takes place in a financed context through its implementation as a CIFRE programme (research and training agreement). As its sponsor, the mental health care facility of the Lille Metropolitan area has set up a plan called “professionalisation and tutoring” in order to complete nurses’ initial training, judged insufficient since the psychiatric nurses’ degree and its associated training were shut down in 1992. The plan’s significance is analysed through three levels and from a comprehensive approach. The first level regards its situation in the historical and cultural evolution of the professional group. The second, that which concerns the plan’s actors getting involved to make it work. The final level refers to the neo-nurses appropriation of the educative work instituted by the plan. It is shown that the plan expresses an intention of (re)professionalising the social group by establishing a relation between work and training. This third level is used as an analytical line allowing the study of how, in neo-nurses’ experience, the relationship with the craft is built. The theme of violence in psychiatry is also examined through the relation between work and training to study how it is taken into account in the nurses’ practices. Finally, the typicality of this research, financed by a sponsor’s funds, implies that it has to deal with a system of expectations composed of different levels. Here, the researcher is made to consider its involvement and give an interventionist dimension by training some actors of the field.; Cette recherche traite des préoccupations de professionnalisation des infirmiers en psychiatrie et santé mentale. Elle s’inscrit dans un contexte commandité via sa mise en œuvre en convention industrielle de formation par la recherche (CIFRE). Commanditaire de ce travail, l’établissement public de santé mentale Lille-Métropole a développé un dispositif dit de « professionnalisation et tutorat » pour compléter une formation initiale jugée insuffisante après que le diplôme d’infirmier de secteur psychiatrique, et la formation y conduisant, aient été supprimés en 1992. La portée de ce dispositif est analysée à trois échelles, à partir d’une démarche compréhensive. D’abord, celle de son inscription dans l’évolution historico-culturelle du groupe professionnel. Ensuite, celle des acteurs mobilisés pour son fonctionnement. Enfin, celui de son appropriation par les néo-infirmiers destinataires de ce travail éducatif institué par le dispositif. Il est montré que le dispositif exprime une intention de (re)professionnalisation du groupe social par l’institution d’une relation entre travail et formation. Celle-ci est mobilisée comme axe analytique permettant d’examiner comment, dans l’expérience des néo-infirmiers, se construit le rapport au métier. La question de la violence en psychiatrie est aussi examinée à l’aune de cette relation pour étudier la manière dont elle est prise en compte dans les pratiques infirmières. Enfin, le caractère commandité de cette recherche la positionne dans un système d’attentes à plusieurs niveaux. Le chercheur est alors conduit à penser son implication et lui donner une dimension interventionniste, ceci par la formation de certains acteurs du terrain.

Abstract: International audience; The Thompson Sampling exhibits excellent results in practice and it has been shown to be asymptotically optimal. The extension of Thompson Sampling algorithm to the Switching Multi-Armed Bandit problem, proposed in [13], is a Thompson Sampling equiped with a Bayesian online change point detector [1]. In this paper, we propose another extension of this approach based on a Bayesian aggregation framework. Experiments provide some evidences that in practice, the proposed algorithm compares favorably with the previous version of Thompson Sampling for the Switching Multi-Armed Bandit Problem, while it outperforms clearly other algorithms of the state-of-the-art.

Abstract: We aimed to determine whether a 5-day intensive inpatient spa and exercise therapy and educational program is more effective than usual care in improving the rate of returning to work at 1 year for patients with subacute and chronic low back pain (LBP) on sick leave for 4 to 24 weeks. We conducted a 12-month randomized controlled trial. LBP patients were assigned to 5-day spa (2 hr/day), exercise (30 min/day) and education (45 min/day) or to usual care. The primary outcome was the percentage of patients returning to work at 1 year after randomization. Secondary outcomes were pain, disability and health-related quality of life at 1 year and number of sick leave days from 6 to 12 months. The projected recruitment was not achieved. Only 88/700 (12.6%) patients planned were enrolled: 45 in the spa therapy group and 43 in the usual care group. At 1 year, returning to work was 56.3% versus 41.9% (OR 1.69 [95% CI 0.60–4.73], p = 0.32) respectively. There was no significant difference for any of the secondary outcomes. However, our study lacked power.

Abstract: International audience; This paper addresses a fine in-plane (roll) face orientation estimation for a perspective face analysis algorithm that requires normalized frontal faces. As most of the face analysers (e.g., gender, expression, and recognition) need frontal up-right faces, there is a clear need for the precise roll estimation, as precise face normalization has an important role in classification methods. The in-plane orientation estimation algorithm is constructed on top of regular Viola-Jones frontal face detector. When a face is detected for the first time, it is rotated with respect to the face origin to find the boundaries of the detection. Mean value of these angles is said to be the measurement of the in-plane rotation of the face. Since we only need a face detection algorithm, the proposed method can work effectively on very small sized faces where traditional landmark (eye, mouth) or planar detection based estimations fail. Experiments on controlled and unconstrained large-scale datasets (CMU Rotated, YouTube, Boston University Face Tracking, Caltech, FG-NET Aging, BioID and Manchester Talking-Face) showed that the proposed method is robust to various settings for in-plane face orientation estimation in terms of RMSE and MAE. We achieved less than ±3.5 ∘ mean absolute error for roll estimation which proves that the accuracy of the proposed method is comparable to that of the state-of-the-art tracking based approaches for the roll estimation.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper an iterated local search (ILS) is embedded with a variable neighborhood Descent (VND) hyper-heuristic. The proposed hyper-heuristic combines low-level heuristics. Several variants from the literature within the proposed ILS were implemented and tested. This article conducts an empirical study involving hard combinatorial optimization problems, permutation flowshop scheduling problem (PFSP) with the objectives of minimizing makespan and the total flowtime of jobs. The proposed ILS based hyper-heuristic proved its general and applicable across the studied problems.

Abstract: International audience; The content of total lipids and fatty-acid methyl esters (FAMEs) identified by GC MS analysis was followed during composting of date palm waste (DPW) alone or mixed with couch-grass clippings (DPGC). The DPGC compost contained more fats and FAMEs (FAs) than did the DPW compost. Total lipid content decreased during both composting processes with an increase towards the end of DPW composting. The initial fatty acid composition in both composts showed that the DPGC mixture was richer in microbial biomass than the DPW compost. The lignocellulose nature of the date palm substrate probably obstructed the proliferation and development of a broad category of microbial biomass. The appearance of a series of odd-numbered carbon and branched FAMEs was recorded only toward the end of DPW composting. This confirms the low level of biodegradation of date palm substrate rich in substrates that presented difficult access to micro-organisms, as confirmed by a slower degradation. DPW compost required longer to reach similar maturity to DPGC that of the mixture. Calculating the relationship between the various bacterial groups showed that bacteria strongly prevailed over fungi during both DPW and DPGC composting. The follow-up of these ratios in both composts showed that the stabilization phase was not complete in DPGC compost, but that it reached a very advanced stage during DPGC composting after the 8-month trial. An increase in G(+)/G(-) and G(+)/fungus ratios toward the end of DPW composting indicated that composting had just started in the DPW. The variations in the levels of the different steroid compounds identified in the two composts showed that dehydration was stronger in the DPGC mixture than in DPW. An increase of the level of stigmastanol acetate (24-ethylcholestanol), methyl cholestadiene (campestadienes), and cholestanol acetate (cholestanol) in DPGC compost suggests the stimulation of microbial organisms and/or micro-fauna capable of performing the hydrogenation of the corresponding sterols. This microbial activity fluctuated during DPW composting following the bioavailability of substrate that was steadily degraded. The appearance of stigmastadienone toward the end of DPW composting confirmed that composting had just started after the full 8 months.

Abstract: Children with specific language impairment frequently encounter difficulties in learning to read and in particular, in word recognition. The present study set out to determine the precise impact of language impairment on word reading skills. We investigated single-word reading in 27 French children with specific speech and language impairment (2SLI). Precise quantification of reading levels in the 2SLI group showed an average delay of 3.5 years. Approximately 90% of these children were affected by a reading disorder, whereas for the remaining 10%, reading performance was within normal limits. Word reading procedures are analyzed using the so-called ‘dual route model’, which proposes that reading is achieved through two processes, the phonological and the orthographic procedures. Group comparison analyses of 27 reading level-matched control children, revealed an increased lexicality effect in the 2SLI group, indicating a specific deficit in the phonological procedure. Moreover, multiple case analyses revealed interindividual differences among the children with 2SLI, with four reading subtypes. Approximately 60% of these children reached the standard levels expected of younger children with identical reading levels (delayed reading profile) in both procedures. Twenty percent displayed qualitatively different reading mechanisms, with a greater deficit in the phonological procedure (phonological profile). These children showed a severe impairment in language production at the phonological level. Ten percent exhibited a greater orthographic deficit (surface profile) and 10% had normal reading skills (normal profile). Further research is required to improve our understanding of the relationships between 2SLI or specific language impairment and reading acquisition. The present results suggest that in clinical practice, both reading procedures should be exercised, with emphasis on the phonological procedure for children with more severe deficits in phonological production. 35;12

Our approach is at the crossroads of parallel cooperative computation, objective space decomposition, and adaptive search. Given a number of computing nodes, we self-coordinate them locally, in order to cooperatively search different regions of the Pareto front. This offers a trade-off between a fully independent approach, where each node would operate independently of the others, and a fully centralized approach, where a global knowledge of the entire population is required at every step. More specifically, the population of solutions is structured and mapped into computing nodes. As local information, every node uses only the positions of its neighbors in the objective space and evolves its local solution based on what we term a 'localized fitness function'. This has the effect of making the distributed search evolve, over all nodes, to a high quality approximation set, with minimum communications. We deploy our distributed algorithm using a computer cluster of hundreds of cores and study its properties and performance on rhoMNK-landscapes. Through extensive large-scale experiments, our approach is shown to be very effective in terms of approximation quality, computational time and scalability.

Abstract: Bootstrapping is a technique commonly known by its usage in language definition by the introduction of a compiler written in the same language it compiles. This process is important to understand and modify the definition of a given language using the same language, taking benefit of the abstractions and expression power it provides. A bootstrap, then, supports the evolution of a language. However, the infrastructure of reflective systems like Smalltalk includes, in addition to a compiler, an environment with several self-references. A reflective system bootstrap should consider all its infrastructural components. In this paper, we propose a definition of bootstrap for object-oriented reflective systems, we describe the architecture and components it should contain and we analyze the challenges it has to overcome. Finally, we present a reference bootstrap process for a reflective system and Hazelnut, its implementation for bootstrapping the Pharo Smalltalk-inspired system. We studied the way a Smalltalk system evolves traditionally.We studied the properties and challenges of bootstrapping a Smalltalk system.Bootstrapping provides reproducibility to the system.Bootstrapping allows the application of changes atomically.We validate our studies bootstrapping two different Smalltalk systems in Pharo.

Abstract: International audience; Implementing UIs is often a tedious task. To address this, UI Builders have been proposed to support the description of widgets, their location, and their logic. A missing aspect of UI Builders is however the ability to reuse and compose widget logic. In our experience, this leads to a significant amount of duplication in UI code. To address this issue, we built Spec: a UIBuilder for Pharo with a focus on reuse. With Spec, widget properties are defined declaratively and attached to specific classes known as composable classes. A composable class defines its own widget description as well as the model-widget bridge and widget interaction logic. This paper presents Spec, showing how it enables seamless reuse of widgets and how these can be customized. After presenting Spec and its implementation, we discuss how its use in Pharo 2.0 has cut in half the amount of lines of code of six of its tools, mostly through reuse. This shows that Spec meets its goals of allowing reuse and composition of widget logic.

Elle a pour objectif de lo-caliser des points caractéristiques sur le visage, dans le but d'identifier sa structure géométrique. En conditions non contrôlées, les différentes variations pouvant inter-venir dans le contexte visuel, associées à l'instabilité de la détection du visage, en font un problème difficile à ré-soudre. Bien que de nombreuses méthodes aient été propo-sées, leurs performances en présence de ces contraintes ne sont toujours pas satisfaisantes. Dans cet article, nous invi-tons à étudier l'alignement du visage à l'aide de séquences d'images et non d'images fixes, comme cela a pu être réa-lisé jusqu'à présent, et montrons l'importance de la prise en compte de l'information temporelle en conditions non contrôlées.

Abstract: International audience; Image-guided hepatic surgery is progressively becoming a standard for certain interventions. However, limited dose radiation requirements result in lower quality images, making it difficult to localize tumors and other structures of interest. In this paper we propose an automatic registration method exploiting the matching of the vascular trees, visible in both pre and intra-operative images. The graphs are automatically matched using an algorithm combining a Gaussian Process Regression and biomechanical model. This process is automatic, does not require any initialization and handles large intra-operative deformations.

Abstract: International audience; We aim at providing a social network such that users form groups to practice together some activities. In this paper, we present a formal framework for coalition formation which is suitable for our usecase. We restrict ourselves to additively separable preferences whose representation is linear with respect to the inputs. We propose here a distributed algorithm which aims at maximizing the egalitarian welfare of the resulting matching. Our experiments shows that: i) this algorithm reaches a better outcome than the classical local search techniques; and ii) the distribution of our algorithm speeds up its runtime.

Abstract: International audience; Modern virtual machines for object-oriented languages such as Java HotSpot, Javascript V8 or Python PyPy reach high performance through just-in-time compilation techniques, involving on-the-fly optimization and deoptimization of the executed code. These techniques require a warm-up time for the virtual machine to collect information about the code it executes to be able to generate highly optimized code. This warm-up time required before reaching peak performance can be considerable and problematic. In this paper, we propose an approach, Sista (Speculative Inlining SmallTalk Architecture) to persist optimized code in a platform-independent representation as part of a snapshot. After explaining the overall approach, we show on a large set of benchmarks that the Sista virtual machine can reach peak performance almost immediately after start-up when using a snapshot where optimized code was persisted.

Abstract: Part 4: Information on Demand, on the Move, and Gesture Interaction; International audience; Interfaces based on mid-air gestures often use a one-to-one mapping between gestures and commands, but most remain very basic. Actually, people exhibit inherent intrinsic variations for their gesture articulations because gestures carry dependency with both the person producing them and the specific context, social or cultural, in which they are being produced. We advocate that allowing applications to map many gestures to one command is a key step to give more flexibility, avoid penalizations, and lead to better user interaction experiences. Accordingly, this paper presents our results on mid-air gesture variability. We are mainly concerned with understanding variability in mid-air gesture articulations from a pure user-centric perspective. We describe a comprehensive investigation on how users vary the production of gestures under unconstrained articulation conditions. The conducted user study consisted in two tasks. The first one provides a model of user conception and production of gestures; from this study we also derive an embodied taxonomy of gestures. This taxonomy is used as a basis for the second experiment, in which we perform a fine grain quantitative analysis of gesture articulation variability. Based on these results, we discuss implications for gesture interface designs.

Abstract: This paper studies the entry of new competitors in public transport like long distance busses that compete with rail. A stylized model is used that analyzes the addition of a new more direct line in an existing network. We show that the introduction of the new line is only beneficial if there are relatively many users that want to use the new direct line. Our result raises serious concerns with respect to the decentralized management of transit systems.

Abstract: International audience; Context. An extension method is a method declared in a package other than the package of its host class. Thanks to extension methods, developers can adapt to their needs classes they do not own: adding methods to core classes is a typical use case. This is particularly useful for adapting software and therefore to increase reusability. Inquiry. In most dynamically-typed languages, extension methods are globally visible. Because any developer can define extension methods for any class, naming conflicts ocur: if two developers define an extension method with the same signature in the same class, only one extension method is visible and overwrites the other. Similarly, if two developers each define an extension method with the same name in a class hierarchy, one overrides the other. To avoid such " accidental overrides " , some dynamically-typed languages limit the visibility of an extension method to a particular scope. However, their semantics have not been fully described and compared. In addition, these solutions typically rely on a dedicated and slow method lookup algorithm to resolve conflicts at runtime. Approach. In this article, we present a formalization of the underlying models of Ruby refinements, Groovy categories, Classboxes, and Method Shelters that are scoping extension method solutions in dynamically-typed languages. Knowledge. Our formal framework allows us to objectively compare and analyze the shortcomings of the studied solutions and other different approaches such as MultiJava. In addition, language designers can use our formal framework to determine which mechanism has less risk of " accidental overrides ". Grounding. Our comparison and analysis of existing solutions is grounded because it is based on denotational semantics formalizations. Importance. Extension methods are widely used in programming languages that support them, especially dynamically-typed languages such as Pharo, Ruby or Python. However, without a carefully designed mechanism , this feature can cause insidious hidden bugs or can be voluntarily used to gain access to protected operations, violate encapsulation or break fundamental invariants. Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to highlight the potential productivity gains resulting from improvements in the (i) educational attainment and (ii) health status of the working‐age population. For that purpose, we develop a Generational Accounting Model applied to the French economy. Using the conventional methodology of generational accounting, we first estimate the adjustments that will be necessary to ensure the sustainability of French fiscal policy in the long term under the assumption that individual taxes and transfers grow at the same rate as labor productivity. However, this assumption does not account for the explicit determinants of individual productivity. Therefore, we then explain how productivity growth is partly due to the French population's skill level and its health level, which is approximated by the survival rate of adults. We estimate that the increased educational attainment and improved adult survival rate in France generate potentially important productivity gains that could significantly challenge the weight of the burden induced by aging. Therefore, we estimate that this change could reduce the tax burden bequeathed to future generations by 79 percent. Our results are robust to the main assumptions.

Abstract: International audience; Automatic Image Annotation (AIA) is a challenging problem in the field of image retrieval, and several methods have been proposed. However, visually supporting this important tasks and reducing the semantic gap between low-level image features and high-level semantic concepts still remains a key issue. In this paper, we propose a visually supporting image annotation framework based on visual features and ontologies. Our framework relies on three main components: (i) extraction and classification of features component, (ii) ontology's building component and (iii) image annotation component. Our goal consists on improving the visual image annotation by:(1) extracting invariant and complex visual features; (2) integrating feature classification results and semantic concepts to build ontology and (3) combining both visual and semantic similarities during the image annotation process.

Abstract: International audience; This paper considers a variant of the multiple depot Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows where skill constraints define the places that vehicles can visit. A difficulty faced here is that the special set of instances are highly constrained, due to tight skill and time window constraints. This induced a matheuristic approach, combining advantages of MIP exact approaches with constructive and local search heuristics. A first work furnishes matheuristics based on compact MIP formulation works. Then, a column generation scheme is developed, using previous work to solve subproblems generating aggressively multiple columns. The resulting column generation heuristic outperforms significantly the previous matheuristics.

Abstract: Emotional interactions have been considered dynamical processes involved in the affective life of humans and their disturbances may induce mental disorders. Most studies of emotional interactions have focused on dyadic behaviors or self-reports of emotional states but neglected the dynamical processes involved in family therapy. The main objective of this study is to quantify the dynamics of emotional expressions and their changes using the family therapy of patients with anorexia nervosa as an example. Nonlinear methods characterize the variability of the dynamics at the level of the whole therapeutic system and reciprocal influence between the participants during family therapy. Results show that the variability of the dynamics is higher at the end of the therapy than at the beginning. The reciprocal influences between therapist and each member of the family and between mother and patient decrease with the course of family therapy. Our results support the development of new interpersonal strategies of emotion regulation during family therapy. The quantification of emotional dynamics can help understanding the emotional processes underlying psychopathology and evaluating quantitatively the changes achieved by the therapeutic intervention. 253

Abstract: Summary Objective To study the association between the results of water samples and Pseudomonas aeruginosa healthcare-associated cases in a French university hospital. Methods Generalized Estimating Equations were used on complete case and imputed datasets. The spatial unit was the building and the time unit was the quarter. Results For the period 2004–2013, 2932 water samples were studied; 17% were positive for P. aeruginosa. A higher incidence of P. aeruginosa cases was associated with a higher proportion of positive water samples ( P =0.056 in complete case analysis and P =0.031 with the imputed dataset). The association was no longer observed when haematology and intensive care units were excluded, but was significant in analyses of data concerning intensive care units alone ( P Conclusion This study suggests that water outlet contamination in hospitals can lead to an increase in healthcare-associated P. aeruginosa cases in wards dealing with susceptible patients, but does not play a significant role in other wards.
