A very simple and direct radioactive isotope method has been described for the quantitative determination of reducing sugars. The method can be adapted to give any degree of sensitivity desired. The procedure is of general applicability to the determination of a large class of sugars. The stoichiometry of the reaction makes it a comprehensive procedure which greatly facilitates the analysis of sugars, oligosaccharides, and glycoproteins after acid and enzymic hydrolysis. Examples of the versatility of the method are given.

It is, however, Saudi Arabia and Iran's dire economic conditions, worsened by the 1998-99 oil price collapse, that forces them to cooperate. The main vehicle for Saudi-Iranian cooperation is the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The Saudi-Iranian detente holds vast implications for oil and stability in the region. Their cooperation ensures higher oil prices, which adversely affect the world economy. These higher prices, however, salvage both countries' economies, improving their domestic stability. The reemergence of Iran onto the Gulf political landscape also serves to lessen tensions in the region. The resulting improvement in inter-Gulf relations creates possibilities for establishing a stable regional security framework that may affect the United States' role in the region.

This document presents a long range strategic plan for the National PDES Testbed project at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The Testbed was initiated in 1988 under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Defense Computer-aided Acquisition and Logistic Support (CALS) program. A major goal of the Testbed is to provide technical leadership in a national effort to implement a complete and useful specification for the exchange of Product Model Data (STEP). The STEP efforts is led by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) TC184/SC4. This plan also outlines a number of supporting project threads that have been established for the Testbed: initiation of the Testbed, development of configuration management systems and services, development of testing systems to validate the proposed standard, specification and testing of application protocols, construction of a prototype STEP-based manufacturing cell, establishment of a product data exchange network, development of conformance testing systems, and management/ technical support activities....
