Abstract: International audience; The aim of this note is to introduce a subdifferential in the spirit of the limiting Fréchet subdifferential. Chain rules are established and several properties are given. We use this subdifferential to compute the subdifferential of subanalytic functions and the value function. An application to discrete infinite horizon dynamic programming is provided.

Abstract: We propose a further development in the theory of packing arborescences. First we review some of the existing results on packing arborescences and then we provide common generalizations of them to directed hypergraphs. We introduce and solve the problem of reachability-based packing of matroid-rooted hyperarborescences and we also solve the minimum cost version of this problem. Furthermore, we introduce and solve the problem of matroid-based packing of matroid-rooted mixed hyperarborescences.

Abstract: The family of generalized Petersen graphs $G(n, k)$, introduced by Coxeter et al. [4] and named by Mark Watkins (1969), is a family of cubic graphs formed by connecting the vertices of a regular polygon to the corresponding vertices of a star polygon. The Kronecker cover $\mathrm{KC}(G)$ of a simple undirected graph $G$ is a a special type of bipartite covering graph of $G$, isomorphic to the direct (tensor) product of $G$ and $K_2$. We characterize all the members of generalized Petersen graphs that are Kronecker covers, and describe the structure of their respective quotients. We observe that some of such quotients are again generalized Petersen graphs, and describe all such pairs.

Abstract: We study the question of uniqueness of minimisers of the standard Ginzburg-Landau functional for R^n-valued maps with a boundary data that is non-negative in a fixed direction. We link the question of uniqueness on the one hand with the " escaping " phenomenon of minimizers, and on the other hand with a stability condition for critical points of the Ginzburg-Landau functional. In particular, we show that, when minimisers are not unique, they " escape " out of the range of the boundary condition and the set of minimisers is generated from any of its elements using appropriate orthogonal transformations of R^n.

Abstract: International audience; Air traffic is generally characterized by simple indicators like the number of aircraft flying over a given area or the total distance flown during a time window. As an example, these values may be used for estimating a rough number of air traffic controllers needed in a given control center or for performing economic studies. However, this approach is not adapted to more complex situations such as those encountered in airspace comparison or air traffic controllers training. An innovative representation of the traffic data, relying on a sound theoretical framework, is introduced in this work. It will pave the way to a number of tools dedicated to traffic analysis. Based on an extraction of local covariance, a grid with values in the space of symmetric positive definite matrices is obtained. It can serve as a basis of comparison or be subject to filtering and selection to obtain a digest of a traffic situation suitable for efficient complexity assessment.

Abstract: International audience; Principal component analysis (PCA) is a method of choice for dimension reduction. In the current context of data explosion, online techniques that do not require storing all data in memory are indispensable to perform the PCA of streaming data and/or massive data. Despite the wide availability of recursive algorithms that can efficiently update the PCA when new data are observed, the literature offers little guidance on how to select a suitable algorithm for a given application. This paper reviews the main approaches to online PCA, namely, perturbation techniques, incremental methods and stochastic optimisation, and compares the most widely employed techniques in terms statistical accuracy, computation time and memory requirements using artificial and real data. Extensions of online PCA to missing data and to functional data are detailed. All studied algorithms are available in the package onlinePCA on CRAN.

Abstract: We provide a norm on the space of signed Radon measures with finite mass, based on the generalized Wasserstein distance for measures of different mass. We explain precisely what is a converging sequence for this norm, in particular, it may be not uniformly bounded and not uniformly tight. This norm enables us to obtain existence and uniqueness of non local and non linear transport equations with source term when initial condition is a signed measure, as the unique limit of a convergent scheme.

Abstract: This paper studies a periodic optimal control problem governed by a one-dimensional system, linear with respect to the control \begin{document}$ u $\end{document} , under an integral constraint on \begin{document}$ u $\end{document} . We give conditions for which the value of the cost function at steady state with a constant control \begin{document}$ \bar u $\end{document} can be improved by considering periodic control \begin{document}$ u $\end{document} with average value equal to \begin{document}$ \bar u $\end{document} . This leads to the so-called "over-yielding" met in several applications. With the use of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we provide the optimal synthesis of periodic strategies under the integral constraint. The results are illustrated on a single population model in order to study the effect of periodic inputs on the utility of the stock of resource.

Abstract: This paper is devoted to the analysis of bifurcations of limit cycles in planar polynomial near-Hamiltonian systems. It is motivated by the second part of the sixteenth Hilbert's problem. We introduce a class of Hamiltonian systems which admit a high number of non-degenerate centers that can be arbitrarily located in the plane. We study several perturbations of those Hamiltonian systems, and analyze their effect by using the Melnikov method. One of those perturbations is defined along the gradient of the initial Hamiltonian.

Abstract: We extend the classical Reed Muller codes by using non commu-tative iterated skew polynomial rings instead of classical commutative polynomial rings. This involves the construction of iterated skew polynomial rings and the definition of the notion of points and evaluation at those points for iterated skew polynomials. Our approach is based on the notion of a left module Gröbner basis in iterated skew polynomial rings.

Abstract: Approximating the solution of Helmholtz problems is a tricky task, especially at high frequency. Indeed, because of the numerical dispersion, it is mandatory to increase the number of discretization points per wavelength for higher frequencies. Using high degree polynomial shape functions on a coarse mesh is an interesting approach because it contributes to reduce such numerical dispersion as compared to linear functions set on a fine mesh. While this solution is very efficient for wave propagation in homogeneous media, it is not obvious how the variations of the medium inside a cell have to be taken into account. Recently the Multiscale Medium Approximation method (MMAm) has been proposed to overcome this difficulty. High-order shape functions are used with a coarse mesh to reduce dispersion and hence, the pollution effect. Then, the key idea is to introduce a multiscale approximation of the medium to take into account fine scale heterogeneities on the coarse mesh. This approach has proven to be efficient on academic test cases and a convergence theory has been developed. In this work, we further validate the MMAm by demonstrating its efficiency on geophysical benchmarks. Abstract: Barreto, Lynn and Scott elliptic curves of embedding degree 12 denoted BLS12 have been proven to present the fastest results on the implementation of pairings for the high security levels (Barbulescu and Duquesne in Updating key size estimations for pairings, 2017. http://eprint.iacr.org/2017/334 ). In particular, BLS12 curves may presently be preferable for the 128 bits security level compared to the well known BN curves (Duquesne and Ghammam in Groups Complex Cryptol 8(1):75–90, 2016). The computation of pairings in general involves the execution of the Miller algorithm and the final exponentiation. In this paper, we propose new parameters that allow us to reduce the number of operations in the Miller loop and in the final exponentiation for BLS12 and extend the study to BLS24 curves. This improvement is up to $$8\%$$ , of multiplications in the finite field $$\mathbb {F}_p$$ . Furthermore, as pairings can be implemented on memory constrained devices such as SIM or smart cards (Duquesne and Ghammam in Groups Complex Cryptol 8(1):75–90, 2016), we describe in our work an efficient algorithm for the computation of the final exponentiation which is more efficient and less memory intensive with an improvement up to $$25\%$$ in memory. Our new algorithm can be useful for implementations in a restricted environment.

Abstract: The simple $GL(n,\mathbb {C})$ -modules are described by using semistandard Young tableaux. Any semistandard skew tableau can be transformed into a well defined semistandard tableau by a combinatorial operation, the Schutzenberger jeu de taquin. Associated to the classical Lie groups $SP(2n,\mathbb {C})$ , $SO(2n+1,\mathbb {C})$ , there are other notions of semistandard Young tableaux and jeux de taquin. In this paper, we study these various jeux de taquin, proving that each of them has a simple and explicit formulation as a step-by-step sliding. Any of these jeux de taquin is the restriction of the orthogonal one, associated to $SO(2n+1,\mathbb {C})$ .

Abstract: Very recently, Thomass\'e, Trotignon and Vuskovic [WG 2014] have given an FPT algorithm for Weighted Independent Set in bull-free graphs parameterized by the weight of the solution, running in time $2^{O(k^5)} \cdot n^9$. In this article we improve this running time to $2^{O(k^2)} \cdot n^7$. As a byproduct, we also improve the previous Turing-kernel for this problem from $O(k^5)$ to $O(k^2)$. Furthermore, for the subclass of bull-free graphs without holes of length at most $2p-1$ for $p \geq 3$, we speed up the running time to $2^{O(k \cdot k^{\frac{1}{p-1}})} \cdot n^7$. As $p$ grows, this running time is asymptotically tight in terms of $k$, since we prove that for each integer $p \geq 3$, Weighted Independent Set cannot be solved in time $2^{o(k)} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ in the class of $\{bull,C_4,\ldots,C_{2p-1}\}$-free graphs unless the ETH fails., Comment: 15 pages

Abstract: In this work, we consider several approaches for the control of the classical Lotka-Volterra prey-predator model. Our aim is to maintain the system in a subset $K(\ul x)$ for which the number of preys is above a given threshold $\ul x$. In the case where the viability kernel of $K(\ul x)$ is non-empty, we provide an analytic description of this set and we compute an optimal feedback control for the minimum time problem to reach this set. We also provide an optimal feedback control for the so-called {\it{time crisis problem}} (see \cite{bayen,DSP}). We point out that for a large set of initial conditions, the duration time spent outside $K(\ul x)$ by the solution of the time crisis problem isless than the one for the minimum time control problem.

Abstract: International audience; We study the problem of master-slave synchronization and control of totalistic cellular automata (CA) by putting a fraction of sites of the slave equal to those of the master and finding the distance between both as a function of this fraction. We present three control strategies that exploit local information about the CA, mainly, the number of nonzero Boolean derivatives. When no local information is used, we speak of synchronization. We find the critical properties of control and discuss the best control strategy compared with synchronization.

Abstract: Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero. Let $f\in k[x_{0},y_{0}]$ be an irreducible polynomial. In this article, we study the space of polynomial partial differential equations of order one in the plane, which admit $f$ as a solution. We provide algebraic characterizations of the associated graded $k[x_{0},y_{0}]$-module (by degree) of this space. In particular, we show that it defines the general component of the tangent space of the curve $\{f=0\}$ and connect it to the $V$-filtration of the logarithmic differential operators of the plane along $\{f=0\}$.

Abstract: International audience; In this note, we will show that for a closed subanalytic subset $A \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, the Clarke tangential regularity of $A$ at $x_0 \in A$ is equivalent to the coincidence of the Clarke's tangent cone to $A$ at $x_0$ with the set \\$$\mathcal{L}(A, x_0):= \bigg\{\dot{c}_+(0) \in \mathbb{R}^n: \, c:[0,1]\longrightarrow A\;\;\mbox{\it is Lipschitz}, \, c(0)=x_0\bigg\}.$$Where $\dot{c}_+(0)$ denotes the right-strict derivative of $c$ at $0$. The results obtained are used to show that the Clarke regularity of the epigraph of a function may be characterized by a new formula of the Clarke subdifferential of that function.

Under some mild conditions on $R$, we construct a monoidal functor from $\mathbf{\mathsf{Cob}}_G$ to the category $\mathbf{\mathsf{pLagr}}_R$ consisting of "pointed Lagrangian relations" between skew-Hermitian $R$-modules. We call it the "Magnus functor" since it contains the Magnus representation of mapping class groups as a special case. Our construction is inspired from the work of Cimasoni and Turaev on the extension of the Burau representation of braid groups to the category of tangles. It can also be regarded as a $G$-equivariant version of a TQFT-like functor that has been described by Donaldson. The study and computation of the Magnus functor is carried out using classical techniques of low-dimensional topology. When $G$ is a free abelian group and $R = Z[G]$ is the group ring of $G$, we relate the Magnus functor to the "Alexander functor" (which has been introduced in a prior work using Alexander-type invariants), and we deduce a factorization formula for the latter., 36 pages; very minor changes

Abstract: Hammersley's Last-Passage Percolation (LPP), also known as Ulam's problem, is a well-studied model that can be described as follows: consider $m$ points chosen uniformly and independently in $[0,1]^2$, then what is the maximal number $\mathcal{L}_m$ of points that can be collected by an up-right path? We introduce here a generalization of this standard LPP, in order to allow for more general constraints than the up-right condition (a $1$-Lipschitz condition after rotation by $45^{\circ}$). We focus more specifically on two cases: (i) when the constraint is a $\gamma$-H\"older (local) condition, we call it H-LPP; (ii) when the constraint is a path-entropy (global) condition, we call it E-LPP. These generalizations also allows us to deal with non-directed LPP. For a positive integer $r$, they also defined $\sigma(G,w;r)$ as the minimum of $w(c)$ among all proper $r$-colorings $c$ of $G$. The complexity of determining $\sigma(G,w)$ when $G$ is a tree was open for almost 20 years, until Ara\'ujo et al. [SIAM J. Discrete Math., 2014] recently proved that the problem cannot be solved in time $n^{o(\log n)}$ on $n$-vertex trees unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) fails. The objective of this article is to provide hardness results for computing $\sigma(G,w)$ and $\sigma(G,w;r)$ when $G$ is a tree or a forest, relying on complexity assumptions weaker than the ETH. Namely, we study the problem from the viewpoint of parameterized complexity, and we assume the weaker hypothesis $FPT \neq W[1]$. Building on the techniques of Ara\'ujo et al., we prove that when $G$ is a forest, computing $\sigma(G,w)$ is $W[1]$-hard parameterized by the size of a largest connected component of $G$, and that computing $\sigma(G,w;r)$ is $W[2]$-hard parameterized by $r$. Abstract: In this paper, we study three classes of difficult non-linear optimization, problems with complementarity (MPCC), vanishing (MPVC) and cardinality constraints (OMCC). They all have in common degenerate constraints, which fail to satisfy classical constraint qualifications in a generic way. The feasible sets of these problems are non-convex, possibly non-connected, with an empty relative interior. This causes several difficulties in practice. In a recent work (Dussault et al. 2017), we propose a unified framework of methods that consider a regularization-penalization-active set method to solve the MPCC, which possesses the best-known convergence properties. In this paper, we extend this unified framework to MPVC and OMCC and consider some applications on optimal control problems.

Abstract: International audience; A nonbacktracking walk on a graph is a directed path such that no edge is the inverse of its preceding edge. The nonbacktracking matrix of a graph is indexed by its directed edges and can be used to count nonbacktracking walks of a given length. It has been used recently in the context of community detection and has appeared previously in connection with the Ihara zeta function and in some generalizations of Ramanujan graphs. In this work, we study the largest eigenvalues of the nonbacktracking matrix of the Erdős–Rényi random graph and of the stochastic block model in the regime where the number of edges is proportional to the number of vertices. Our results confirm the “spectral redemption conjecture” in the symmetric case and show that community detection can be made on the basis of the leading eigenvectors above the feasibility threshold.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the interactions between the multiple ecosystem services (ES) which can be delivered from a single landscape is essential. Most studies on ES relationships use spatial or temporal statistical analysis (for example: correlations between services). Methods from microeconomic theory have recently received attention for describing ES relationships. The nature and intensity of ES relationships can be assessed by fitting a production possibility frontier that indicates the maximum amount of one ES that can be produced by landscape, for different levels of another ES. This study estimates production frontiers empirically, and compares the ES relationships insights gained this way with those inferred from correlation approaches. InVEST software was used to model and map the provision of six ES in the Reventazón watershed in Costa Rica. Spatial and temporal ES correlation patterns were analyzed for four observed land uses/land covers (LULC). Production frontiers were constructed using a set of 32 simulated scenarios. Production frontier was the most sensitive method for detecting ES relationships. The nature and intensity of ES relationships revealed depended on the analytic methods used. In comparison with correlations, the production frontier approach provided additional information relating to tradeoff intensity and Pareto efficient LULC configurations.

Abstract: Euler showed that there are infinitely many triangular numbers that are three times other triangular numbers. In general, it is an easy consequence of the Pell equation that for a given square-free m > 1, the relation P=mP' is satisfied by infinitely many pairs of triangular numbers P, P'. After recalling what is known about triangular numbers, we shall study this problem for higher polygonal numbers. Whereas there are always infinitely many triangular numbers which are fixed multiples of other triangular numbers, we give an example that this is false for higher polygonal numbers. However, as we will show, if there is one such solution, there are infinitely many. We will give conditions which conjecturally assure the existence of a solution. But due to the erratic behavior of the fundamental unit in quadratic number fields, finding such a solution is exceedingly difficult. Finally, we also show in this paper that, given m > n > 1 with obvious exceptions, the system of simultaneous relations P = mP', P = nP'' has only finitely many possibilities not just for triangular numbers, but for triplets P, P', P'' of polygonal numbers, and give examples of such solutions., 17 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables. Abstract: International audience; Precipitation amounts at daily or hourly scales are skewed to the right and heavy rainfall is poorly modeled by a simple gamma distribution. An important, yet challenging topic in hydrometeorology is to find a probability distribution that is able to model well low, moderate and heavy rainfall. To address this issue, we present a semiparametric distribution suitable for modeling the entire-range of rainfall amount. This model is based on a recent parametric statistical model called the class of Extended Generalized Pareto Distributions (EGPD). The EGPD family is in compliance with Extreme Value Theory for both small and large values, while it keeps a smooth transition between these tails and bypasses the hurdle of selecting thresholds to define extremes. In particular, return levels beyond the largest observation can be inferred. To add flexibility to this EGPD class, we propose to model the transition function in a non-parametric fashion. A fast and efficient nonparametric scheme based on Bernstein polynomial approximations is investigated. We perform simulation studies to assess the performance of our approach. It is compared to two parametric models: a parametric EGPD and the classical Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD), the later being only fitted to excesses above high threshold. We also apply our semiparametric version of EGPD to daily rainfall data recorded at Mont-Aigoual weather station in France.

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to study coupled networks of nonidentical instances of the PCR system (Panic-Control-Reflex), which is a geographical model for human behaviors during catastrophic events. We endow the subsequent graph with superposed linear and quadratic couplings, and explore the effect of the topology of the network on the dynamics of each node. Especially, we investigate the possibility of controlling the panic level in the network by a clever disposal of the connections. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for synchronization, without any reductive assumption on the nature of the network, and study the global stability of the trivial equilibrium. We illustrate our theoretical results by numerical simulations of randomly generated networks.

Abstract: We study semi-infinite Jacobi matrices $H=H_{0}+V$ corresponding to trace class perturbations $V$ of the "free" discrete Schr\"odinger operator $H_{0}$. Our goal is to construct various spectral quantities of the operator $H$, such as the weight function, eigenfunctions of its continuous spectrum, the wave operators for the pair $H_{0}$, $H$, the scattering matrix, the spectral shift function, etc. This allows us to find the asymptotic behavior of the orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ associated to the Jacobi matrix $H $ as $n\to\infty$. Abstract: In seismic probabilistic risk assessment, fragility curves are used to estimate the probability of failure of a structure or its critical components at given values of seismic intensity measures, e.g. the peak ground acceleration. However, the computation of the fragility curves requires a large number of time-consuming mechanical simulations with the finite element method (FEM). To reduce the computational cost, in this paper a statistical metamodel based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) is constructed to replace the FEM model. An adaptive ANNs learning strategy, aimed at prioritizing the data close to the limit state of the structures, is proposed in order to improve the design of experiments for the fragility analysis. The adaptive learning strategy is developed and tested on a nonlinear Takeda oscillator.

Our aim is to extend previous results on existence and uniqueness of optimal transport maps to cases of sub-Riemannian structures which admit many singular minimizing geodesics. We treat here the case of sub-Riemannian structures of rank two in dimension four.

Abstract: In this thesis, we study and develop different families of time integration schemes for linear ODEs. After presenting the space discretisation methods and a review of classical Runge-Kutta schemes in the first part, we construct high-order A-stable time integration schemes for an arbitrary order with low-dissipation and low-dispersion effects in the second part. Then we develop explicit schemes with an optimal CFL number for a typical profile of spectrum. The obtained CFL number and the efficiency on the typical profile for each explicit scheme are given. Pursuing our aim, we propose a methodology to construct locally implicit methods of arbitrary order. We present the locally implicit methods obtained from the combination of the A-stable implicit schemes we have developed and explicit schemes with optimal CFL number. We use them to solve the acoustic wave equation and provide convergence curves demonstrating the performance of the obtained schemes. In addition of the different 1D and 2D validation tests performed while solving the acoustic wave equation, we present numerical simulation results for 3D acoustic wave and the Maxwell’s equations in the last part.; Dans cette thèse, nous étudions et développons différentes familles de schémas d’intégration en temps pour les EDO linéaires. Dans la première partie, après avoir introduit les définitions et propriétés utilisées pour construire les schémas en temps, nous présentons deux méthodes de discrétisation en espace et une revue des schémas de Runge-Kutta (RK) qui sont couramment utilisés dans la littérature. Dans la seconde partie on présente une méthodologie pour construire deux familles de schémas A-stable pour un ordre quelconque. Puis on fournit des schémas explicites, construits en maximisant leur nombre CFL pour un profil de spectre donné. Ces schémas explicites sont ensuite combinés aux schémas implicites A-stable, pour construire des schémas localement implicites que nous décrivons. En plus des tests de validations des schémas pour des problèmes en dimension un et deux de l’espace, nous présentons des résultats numériques obtenus en résolvant des problèmes de propagation d’ondes acoustiques et électromagnétiques en dimensions trois dans la troisième partie.

Abstract: International audience; Following the emergence of Kim and Barbulescu's new number field sieve (exTNFS) algorithm at CRYPTO'16 [21] for solving discrete logarithm problem (DLP) over the finite field; pairing-based cryptography researchers are intrigued to find new parameters that confirm standard security levels against exTNFS. Recently, Barbulescu and Duquesne have suggested new parameters [3] for well-studied pairing-friendly curves i.e., Barreto-Naehrig (BN) [5], Barreto-Lynn-Scott (BLS-12) [4] and Kachisa-Schaefer-Scott (KSS-16) [19] curves at 128-bit security level (twist and subgroup attack secure). They have also concluded that in the context of Optimal-Ate pairing with their suggested parameters , BLS-12 and KSS-16 curves are more efficient choices than BN curves. Therefore, this paper selects the atypical and less studied pairing-friendly curve in literature, i.e., KSS-16 which offers quartic twist, while BN and BLS-12 curves have sextic twist. In this paper, the authors optimize Miller's algorithm of Optimal-Ate pairing for the KSS-16 curve by deriving efficient sparse multiplication and implement them. Furthermore , this paper concentrates on the Miller's algorithm to experimentally verify Barbulescu et al.'s estimation. The result shows that Miller's algorithm time with the derived pseudo 8-sparse multiplication is most efficient for KSS-16 than other two curves. Therefore, this paper defends Barbulescu and Duquesne's conclusion for 128-bit security.
