As an interdisciplinary subject, design is the combination of art and techniques, humanity and sciences. However, there are still deviations in people's notion of design and unilateralism in people's understandings. Generally design is thought to be contained in all forms and levels of production activities, like artistic designing, mechanical designing, structural designing, marketing designing and so on, and these forms and levels are all independent from each other. With the development of times, people's systematic conscious become awaken, and people begin to realize that these forms and levels are different stages of the design systematic work. Through an analysis of the nature of design activity, this paper applies the concept of art and game to talk about that the essential attribute of design is artistic creation activity.

Art design cultivation is the teaching approach of innovation. No innovation, no vitality. The ability of innovation is not only performed by study and applying, but also is illustrated by the ability of creating new thoughts and new skills. Furthermore, it can be regarded as conscious behavior of innovation. Art and design education are put much emphasize on cultivation of innovation ability towards students, which needs to be put into social practice to a great extent. Changing the method of traditional teaching, combining with practice is the most efficient approach of talent cultivation.

By introducing a true “design team” in the teaching process, change the remaining one-way interaction between “education” and “learning” in the teaching of art design. This paper describes the design of an optical see-through head-mounted display (HMD) system for Augmented Reality (AR). Our goals were to make virtual objects “perfectly” indistinguishable from real objects, wherever the user roams, and to find out to which extent imperfections are hindering applications in art and design. For AR, fast and accurate measuring of head motions is crucial. We made a head-pose tracker for the HMD that uses error-state Kalman filters to fuse data from an inertia tracker with data from a camera that tracks visual markers. This makes on-line head-pose based rendering of dynamic virtual content possible. We measured our system, and found that with an A4-sized marker viewed from > 20? at 5m distance with an SXGA camera (FOV 108?), the RMS error in the tracker angle was < 0.5? when moving the head slowly. Our Kalman filters suppressed the pose error due to camera delay, which is proportional to the angular and linear velocities, and the dynamic misalignment was comparable to the static misalignment. Applications of artists and designers lead to observations on the profitable use of our AR system. Their exhibitions at world-class museums showed that AR is a powerful tool for disclosing cultural heritage.

Following the Bad Reichenhall ice-arena collapse, numerous expertises on the structural safety of wide-span timber structures were carried out at the Chair of Timber Structures and Building Construction. It became evident that inadequate structural design and detailing as well as inadequate manufacturing principles were the main reasons for observed failures. The design and manufacture of connections in wide-span timber structures are still amongst the most challenging tasks for both the structural engineer as well as the executing company. This paper will, on the basis of an exemplary expertise, discuss specific issues in the structural reliability of connections in wide- span timber trusses and give recommendations towards a state-of-the art design of such connections.

In the fi rst decades of the twentieth century, Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz invented the ‘ Vienna Method of Pictorial Statistics ’ (Wiener Bildstatistik). The method was renamed in the late 1930s as ISOTYPE ― ‘ I(nternational) S(ystem) O(f) TY(pographic) P(icture) E(ducation) ’ ― and was used in the 1940s and 50s in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Greece, the USA and the USSR. In this article, we explain the origins and basics of the Vienna Method/ISOTYPE, stressing Neurath’s aim of clarifying developments in society by means of pictorial statistics and of raising the awareness of the uneducated by displaying these pictorial statistics in a museumlike setting. In this educational aspect, the ISOTYPE philosophy can be linked to the Vienna Circle (Wiener Kreis) and the International Unity of Science movement. It is noted that while the concept of ISOTYPE retained its infl uence in the world of art and design, it completely lost its impact on statistical graphics during the second half of the twentieth century. Several explanations for the curtailment of ISOTYPE’s infl uence in statistics are given.

The fundamental premise of this article is that aesthetic theorists have a responsibility more clearly to delineate the parameters of aesthetic objects than has been done. It is concluded that these parameters are known but have not been systematically organized. Consequently, they are not known as distinct parameters except to aesthetics specialists, and certainly not to practitioners in applied aesthetics. Three well-known parameters are delineated; formal parameters, fidelity parameters, and content (message) parameters, Three applied situations in which aesthetics are employed are described. These are fashion apparel design, art design, art psychotherapy and product advertising. For each of these it is illustrated how knowledge of the three parameters might lead to better applications.

Recent developments in heat exchanger design for the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry are reviewed. Particular attention is placed on describing recent developments in heat transfer enhancement on the refrigerant side for evaporation and condensation applications. Both shell-side and tube-side refrigerant enhancement are covered. Data from a number of experimental studies are presented for commercially available surfaces.

It related quasi-regular pattern evolution mechanism with textile pattern design to translate formerly invisible information in mathematic area into visible textile pattern of art design. So the visual field on design could be effectively expanded, and formed the new design concept and thinking.

In this paper, a pedagogical system to visualize the students' motivation states for learning programming is proposed. This system can be used in E-Learning environments so that the instructors can assess the students' motivation states in real-time. This system is based on the Systematical Information Education Method (SIEM) assessment standard proposed by Dohi [1], which is used to assess the students' motivation to learn programming. In order to visualize the students' motivation states, the correlations between the factors in the SIEM assessment standard are mapped on the width of the arcs of the graph whose nodes are the factors in the standard. As the preliminary experiments, the introductory programming courses were offered to the students in the art design and digital design faculties at two universities. It has been found that in order to maintain or raise students' motivation it is more important to allow students to enjoy viewing the final results (artwork) of the programming than to make them strive to create more beautiful artwork.

In the development of mobile and location-specific experience creation, artists, designers and researchers at the Ontario College of Art & Design are developing new approaches to creation and collaboration that take into account the realities of artistic, academic and technical cultures. These included iterative creation strategies, co-evolution of technical platforms and cultural content, and rapid prototyping through charettes.This paper will examine some of the strategies employed across several projects which all focused on creating new content and new types of content delivery for users of mobile devices, particularly cell phones. It will draw examples from games, sound compositions and virtual theatre experiences.

Meat and poultry processing facilities are an essential component of our food supply system. Like most agri-industrial production facilities, meat processing facilities have a number of unique design requirements. Design information, to date, has been limited. In an effort to summarize state of the art design procedures for meat processing facilities constructed in the United States, an overview of accepted standards and procedures has been assembled and discussed. With this paper engineers should become more familiar with specific design considerations for meat and poultry processing production facilities and develop appropriate references to expand their knowledge base. Educators may find this paper useful too. This paper discusses structural, layout, planning, construction, and sanitation of meat processing facilities and their effects on plant operation.

In the era of knowledge, the trans-boundary integration of knowledge is booming. New knowledge, new information and new application are continuously produced. However, it is more likely to see that existing developed theories and technologies will be replaced, marginalized or even eliminated. Therefore, application-oriented institutes must break the original teaching mode of simple courses and then employ new multi-perspective horizon course teaching method. From the perspective of the education orientation and objec-tive of art design in application-oriented institutes, this paper compares the multi-perspective horizon teaching and the interdisciplinary teaching. It proposes the teaching strategies of multi-perspective horizon teaching about art design in application-oriented institutes, as well as the professional skills needed during teaching of special-ized courses.

The autonomous learning ability plays an important role on the process of improving college or university students’ comprehensive qualities. For the college students majoring in Art Design, this kind of ability can help them master the professional skills of art and design effectively and contribute to the improvement of comprehensive quality and professional attainment. This paper mainly puts forward some effective measures to improve the college students’ autonomous learning ability through two ways: first, analyzing the problems during the process of forming the autonomous learning ability, which exists among the students majoring in Art Design; second, acknowledging the important meanings of cultivating this ability. These measures are conductive to the development of college students who study this major and their cultivation, and meeting the social demand for practical talents in this field.

Professional compositors who spend their days in dark rooms trying to create new realities out of unrelated background plates and color screen shots have many horror stories. No matter how clear they have been with the other people involved in the production, it is almost always the case that one or more shots has violated a basic rule of production for color keying, either in lighting or design, in costuming, or simply in poor execution. The director, producer, and director of photography (DP)— indeed all the production staff—must understand that color-based compositing is a nasty tightrope of compromises that must be respected in every shot. Breaking the rules costs money and time and may render the best acting take unusable in post.

Modern teaching has undergone academic reform through information technology. Given the specificity of art design, this field requires the use of multimedia resources and the popularization of teaching courseware. However, the development of teaching courseware remain problematic. The academic research results in this field are still rooted on theories and lack practical significance. This study adopts the perspective of visual communication design technology and combines it with computer-assisted instruction technology to discuss art courseware design making. The teaching courseware is designed with art design history as an example. The experimental tests reveal the effectiveness of the method. Unlike those in a traditional classroom, the learning effects of the proposed method are greatly optimized and promoted. Hence, this method has high application value.

This paper presents a new accurate method for generation of 1/f noise worst cases (WC) based on statistical measurement data. This is implemented in existing state of the art design simulators with a scaled flicker noise model for CMOS.
