Clarireediajacksonii causes dollar spot disease of cool‐season turfgrasses in the United States and produces the phytotoxin oxalic acid. The role of oxalic acid in host–pathogen interactions of C. jacksonii is unknown and there are multiple challenges to studying these interactions in natural turfgrass hosts. Consequently, identification of model plants to study C. jacksonii–host interactions and the role of oxalic acid in pathogenesis is necessary. Controlled environment inoculation assays were used to evaluate pathogenesis of C. jacksonii in various model plants and investigate the role of oxalic acid in symptom development. Observations at microscopic and macroscopic levels demonstrated that infection progressed similarly in all monocots tested (creeping bentgrass, wheat, barley, rice, Brachypodiumdistachyon) but not in the dicot Arabidopsisthaliana. Plant oxalic acid content increased from near zero to around 0.2–0.4 mM following inoculation with C. jacksonii in creeping bentgrass, barley, and wheat. Conversely, oxalic acid content remained near zero in A. thaliana and was not well correlated with inoculation in rice and B. distachyon, both of which had higher endogenous oxalic acid levels than other monocots. Time‐course oxalic acid quantification experiments with creeping bentgrass and B. distachyon further supported a link between symptom development and in planta oxalic acid content and identified 48 hr postinoculation as a critical time‐point for investigating the role of oxalic acid in C. jacksonii pathogenesis. These studies demonstrate that various monocots can serve as tractable model systems for studying C. jacksonii–host interactions and that increases in oxalic acid content are associated with C. jacksonii symptom development. Roughstalk bluegrass (Poa trivialis L.) contamination is problematic on golf course fairways from the Midwest to the mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Bispyribac-sodium and sulfosulfuron have potential to selectively control roughstalk bluegrass. Our objectives were to determine the most effective herbicide treatments for short- and long-term roughstalk bluegrass control and to determine if interseeding with creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) after herbicide treatments will improve long-term control of roughstalk bluegrass or conversion to creeping bentgrass. Plots were treated with bispyribac-sodium or sulfosulfuron and then half of each plot was interseeded with creeping bentgrass in early August, 2 weeks after the final herbicide application in 2006, 2007, and 2008 in Indiana. Roughstalk bluegrass cover reduction was highest when treated with bispyribac-sodium at 56 or 74 g ⋅ ha-1 a.i. applied four times or sulfosulfuron at 27 g ⋅ ha-1. applied three times, lnterseeding with creeping bentgrass improved long-term roughstalk bluegrass control and quickened conversion to creeping bentgrass. Furthermore, bispyribac-sodium and sulfosulfuron appeared to be more effective in the first 2 years of the study when seasonal heat stress was greater, which appeared to improve long-term roughstalk bluegrass control and promoted creeping bentgrass establishment. As restrictions on water use, fertilization, and pesticide applications continue to increase, golf course superintendents will need to use grass species that require reduced inputs. The objective of this study was to evaluate alternative turfgrass species under low-input fairways conditions. In 2005, 17 species were established on native soil in St. Paul, MN. Each species was evaluated at three levels of traffic (zero, three, or six passes per week using a drum-type traffic simulator) and two mowing heights (1.90 and 2.54 cm). Data collected included turfgrass quality and percent living stand density. In 2006, velvet bentgrass (Agrostis canina L.), colonial bentgrass (Agrostis capillaris L.), and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) maintained acceptable quality in all treatment combinations. In 2007, Chewings fescue (Festuca rubra L. ssp.fallax) and sheep fescue (Festuca ovina L.) were the top-performing species regardless of treatment. Hard fescue (Festuca brevipila Tracey) performed poorly in Year 1 and well in Year 2. All other species did not perform at an acceptable level during the study. The results of this study indicate that sheep fescue, Chewings fescue, colonial bentgrass, and velvet bentgrass should be studied further for use on low-input golf course fairways in the northern United States. Taxonomic diversity of bacteria associated with golf course putting greens is a topic that has not been widely explored. The purpose of this project was to isolate and identify culturable bacteria from the rhizosphere of creeping bentgrass (Agrostris palustris Huds.) at two sites (Alabama and North Carolina) and hybrid bermudagrass [Cynodon dactyion (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] at two sites (Florida and South Carolina) for a minimum of 3 years with sampling initiated after the construction process. Randomly selected colonies were identified using gas chromatography for analysis of fatty acid methyl ester profiles. Over 9000 isolates were successfully analyzed. When a similarity index of 0.300 or higher was used, the average number of unidentifiable isolates was 38.6%. The two dominant genera in both bentgrass and bermudagrass rhizospheres were Bacillus and Pseudomonas with Bacillus dominant in bermudagrass and Pseudomonas dominant or equal to Bacillus in bentgrass. Other genera that comprised at least 1% of the isolates at all four sites were Clavibacter, Flavobacterium, and Microbacterium. Arthrobacter also comprised a significant portion of the bacterial isolates in the bentgrass rhizosphere, but not the bermudagrass rhizosphere. Overall, there were 40 genera common to all four sites. At the species level, there were five that comprised at least 1% of the isolates at each location: B. cereus, B. megaterium, C. michiganensis, F. johnsoniae, and P. putida. As has been reported for many grasses, we found considerable taxonomic diversity among the culturable bacterial populations from the rhizospheres of bentgrass and bermudagrass grown in sand-based putting greens. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.; CBG) is a common weed in home lawns and golf course roughs in many regions of the United States. Currently, no herbicides are registered for selective control of CBG in cool-season grasses. The objective of this field study was to evaluate the ability of mesotrione and triclopyr ester to selectively remove CBG from Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Mesotrione (0.14 and 0.21 kg⋅ha-1 a.i.) and triclopyr ester (0.56 and 1.12 kg⋅ha-1 a.i.) were applied on a 2-week interval two, three, or four times in Connecticut and Maryland in 2005, and three or four times in Maryland in 2006. Two applications of mesotrione at 0.21 kg⋅ha-1 a.i. provided marginally acceptable CBG control, but three or four applications at 0.14 or 0.21 kg⋅ha-1 a.i. provided excellent CBG control. Mesotrione elicited little or no injury to Kentucky bluegrass, but generally caused objectionable injury in tall fescue for about 7 to 14 d after each application. Triclopyr applied at 0.56 kg⋅ha-1 a.i. reduced CBG cover, but the level of control generally was unacceptable, regardless of application frequency. Three or four applications of triclopyr (1.12 kg⋅ha-1 a.i.) effectively controlled CBG in Connecticut in 2005 and Maryland in 2006. Triclopyr caused no visual injury to tall fescue, regardless of rate or application frequency. Four triclopyr applications to Kentucky bluegrass, however, were phytotoxic and reduced stand density, especially at the high rate (1.12 kg⋅ha-1 a.i.). Three summer applications of mesotrione (0.14 kg⋅ha-1 a.i.) or triclopyr (1.12 kg⋅ha-1 a.i.) provided the best combination of turfgrass safety and CBG control. Dollar spot (Scierotinia homoeocarpa FT. Bennett) causes one of the most important diseases faced by golf course superintendents throughout the USA. Fungicides are effective, but fungicide resistance and regulation have restricted their use. Site-specific application allows more judicious use of fungicides, but the spatial heterogeneity of dollar spot incidence has been unknown. An intensive study was designed to determine the spatial distribution of dollar spot incidence using geostatistical analysis. Dollar spot foci were manually counted every 2 to 3 d in 200 quadrats in 2000, and in 888 quadrats in 2001 and 2002. Variograms showed spatial aggregation of dollar spot foci on a small scale, and remained stable throughout the growing season despite increasing disease incidence. The range parameter of the variograms was stable within a season, with values ranging between 2.5 and 9.5, 1.3 and 1.9, and 1.2 and 2.2 m in 2000, 2001, and 2002, respectively. Kriged maps of dollar spot incidence also show a stable pattern of spatial aggregation remains throughout the growing season. The locations of dollar spot clusters changed between seasons, but the variograms from each season were similar, further suggesting stability of the spatial structure. It appears that limited secondary dispersal of S. homoeocarpa occurs during epidemics, as evidenced by the stable variograms observed throughout the three growing seasons. Concerns about genetically modified (GM) crops include transgene flow to compatible wild species and unintended ecological consequences of potential transgene introgression. However, there has been little empirical documentation of establishment and distribution of transgenic plants in wild populations. We present herein the first evidence for escape of transgenes into wild plant populations within the USA; glyphosate-resistant creeping bentgrass ( Agrostis stolonifera L.) plants expressing CP4 EPSPS transgenes were found outside of cultivation area in central Oregon. Resident populations of three compatible Agrostis species were sampled in nonagronomic habitats outside the Oregon Department of Agriculture control area designated for test production of glyphosate-resistant creeping bentgrass. CP4 EPSPS protein and the corresponding transgene were found in nine A. stolonifera plants screened from 20 400 samples (0.04 ± 0.01% SE). CP4 EPSPS-positive plants were located predominantly in mesic habitats downwind and up to 3.8 km beyond the control area perimeter; two plants were found within the USDA Crooked River National Grassland. Spatial distribution and parentage of transgenic plants (as confirmed by analyses of nuclear ITS and chloroplast matK gene trees) suggest that establishment resulted from both pollen-mediated intraspecific hybridizations and from crop seed dispersal. These results demonstrate that transgene flow from short-term production can result in establishment of transgenic plants at multi-kilometre distances from GM source fields or plants. Selective pressure from direct application or drift of glyphosate herbicide could enhance introgression of CP4 EPSPS transgenes and additional establishment. Obligatory outcrossing and vegetative spread could further contribute to persistence of CP4 EPSPS transgenes in wild Agrostis populations, both in the presence or absence of herbicide selection. Sclerotinia homoeocarpa is responsible for causing significant damage on a wide variety of different grass species. Because it is an asexual fungus, the study of its population structure can be difficult. Previous research has determined that S. homoeocapra has anywhere from three to 20 vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) within localized geographic ranges in the United States. However, a survey of a large geographic area has yet to be undertaken. The present study examined 25 isolates of S. homoeocarpa from the United Kingdom, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Ohio, Illinois and Oregon. Among the 25 isolates, eight VCGs were identified. Other researchers have reported that there are seven VCGs in temperate North America on amenity turfgrasses. Dead spot (Ophiosphaerella agrostis) is a relatively new disease of young creeping bentgrass and hybrid bermudagrass putting greens in the United States. Little is known about the biology or genetic diversity of the pathogen. O. agrostis is unusual in that it produces prodigious numbers of pseudothecia in the field throughout the summer months and has no known asexual state. A total of 77 O. agrostis isolates were collected from 21 different bentgrass putting greens and one hybrid bermudagrass green in 11 states. DNA fingerprint analysis revealed that 78 out of 97 markers were polymorphic (80.4%), providing 57 unique profiles. Genetic variation of O. agrostis was diverse, and isolates separated into three distinct clades with ≥69% similarity. Analysis of molecular variance indicated that the geographic origins of the isolates and the ability to produce pseudothecia were the best indicators for genetic similarity among O. agrostis isolates. Colony color varied among the isolates, but generally was similar for isolates residing within two clades (B and C). Colony color of isolates within clade A appeared to be a mixture of the colony colors exhibited by clades B and C. Isolates examined within each clade generally had varying levels of pseudothecia production and varying colony colors when grown on PDA. The culture of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) at low mowing heights on putting greens in the hot humid region of the USA presents numerous water management problems. Frequent irrigation of greens to prevent water stress has been credited with producing shallow rooted turf with reduced tolerance to environmental stress. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship between irrigation frequency and turf quality, shoot density, and root length density for five cultivars of creeping bentgrass grown on a sand-based root zone and maintained to putting green standards. A total of 81 plots, 1.5 by 1.5 m each, were established on a USGAtype root zone mixture and organized into nine irrigation cells of nine plots each. Each irrigation cell could be irrigated individually. One plot in each irrigation cell was planted to the following bentgrass cultivars: A-4, Crenshaw, Mariner, L-93, and Penncross. The remaining four plots in each irrigation cell were also planted with bentgrass but were not a part of this study. Irrigation frequency treatments of 1-, 2-, and 4-d were imposed on three irrigation cells each. After establishment, measurements of turf quality, shoot density and root length density were made over a 2-yr period. In both years, Crenshaw and L-93 had the best turf quality. At the end of the study, shoot densities for Crenshaw, L-93, and A-4 were 37 to 42% greater than Mariner and Penncross. Because of frequent rainfall events in 1997, there were no significant (P ≤ 0.05) effects of irrigation frequency on shoot density or root length density. However, in 1998, turf was more dependent on irrigation and bentgrass irrigated every 4 d had significantly greater turf quality, shoot density, and root length density than that watered every 1 or 2 d. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) is well adapted to golf course greens, tees, and fairways but may become a weed in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) roughs and lawns. The objectives of this study were to determine effects of sulfosulfuron rate and application date on control of creeping bentgrass and safety on Kentucky bluegrass. Field experiments were initiated in 2003 and 2004 in Ames, IA, and West Lafayette, IN. Single applications of sulfosulfuron at 0.011 or 0.022 kg&mdot;ha-1 were applied over a 9-week period during the fall of each year. Phytotoxicity on Kentucky bluegrass was recorded weekly and control of creeping bentgrass was determined in the spring after fall treatments. No treatment provided greater than 31% control, and there were few differences in control between the two rates of sulfosulfuron. In West Lafayette, late fall applications were the most effective providing up to 31% control of creeping bentgrass. Sulfosulfuron provided less than 18% control in Ames in either year. Kentucky bluegrass was tolerant of all sulfosulfuron applications. Late fall applications of sulfosulfuron may be useful in partially removing creeping bentgrass from a heavily contaminated sward of Kentucky bluegrass. Use of creeping bentgrass [Agrostis stoloniferous L. var. palustris (Huds.)] on golf greens has expanded into the hotter, more humid regions of the United States where its quality is often low during summer months. The summer decline in bentgrass quality may be partially attributed to respiration rates exceeding photosynthesis during periods of supraoptimal temperatures and adverse soil conditions, such as excessive CO2 and inadequate O2 levels. The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of high temperature, high soil CO2, and irrigation scheduling on creeping bentgrass growth. A growth chamber study was conducted using 'A-1' creeping bentgrass. Treatments included all combinations of three day/night temperature regimes (26.5/21 °C, 29.5/24 °C, and 32/26.5 °C), three irrigation schedules (field capacity daily, field capacity every two d, and half field capacity daily), and four soil CO2 injection levels (10%, 5%, 0.03%, and a noinjection control). Creeping bentgrass shoot and root dry weights and net photosynthetic rates were greater for day/night temperatures <32/26.5 °C. High temperatures (32/26.5 °C) and 10% CO2 reduced bentgrass net photosynthesis by 37.5 µmol CO2/m²/s. Shoot and root total nonstructural carbohydrates also were lowest for highest temperature regime. Respiration exceeded gross photosynthesis at 32/26.5 °C when 5% and 10% CO2 injection levels were used, indicating a carbon deficit occurred for these conditions. Past experiments on sand-based putting greens have frequently used randomized complete blocked designs (RCBD), even though these experimental areas are relatively uniform with regard to external variables. Consequently, completely randomized designs (CRD) may have had better precision with which to estimate treatment effects compared with RCBD. The objective of this study was to estimate the relative efficiency (ERE) of a RCBD compared with a CRD when evaluating common parameters on sand-based putting greens. Uniformity trials were conducted in Arkansas and Nebraska on sandbased putting greens established with creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). Estimated relative efficiency values were calculated for varying blocking schemes when measuring canopy temperature, soil temperature, soil moisture, clipping yield, and macronutrient content in plant tissues. Since canopy temperatures were time dependent, when those measurements were collected by a blocking scheme, the associated RCBD was approximately nine times more efficient than a CRD. For the remaining parameter and blocking scheme combinations, ERE values indicated that the precision between RCBD and CRD was similar. The control of dollar spot by paclobutrazol applied as a growth regulator on a creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) and annual bluegrass (Poa annua) fairway turf was compared with two standard fungicide treatments in Minnesota during two growing seasons. Paclobutrazol wasapplied every 3 weeks, staggered by about 10 days with fungicide treatments (chlorothalorlil or propiconazole), also applied every 3 weeks. Paclobutrazol alone significantly reduced the number of dollar spot infection centers during both summers, often by as much as 80%. Chlorothalonil or propiconazole were usually more effective in controlling dollar spot than paclobutrazol. Paclobutrazol improved disease control by fungicides when tested in combination with various rates of chlorothalonil or propiconazole.
