Abstract

Posthumanism has seen a surge across the humanities and offers a unique perspective, seeking to illuminate the role that more-than-human actors (e.g., affect, artifacts, objects, flora, fauna, other materials) play in the human experience . This book challenges the field of social studies education to think differently about the precarious status of the world (i.e., climate crisis, ongoing fights for racial equity, and Indigenous sovereignty). By cultivating a greater sense of attunement to the more-than-human, educators and scholars can foster more ethical ways of teaching, learning, researching, being, and becoming. In an effort to push the boundaries of what constitutes social studies, chapter authors engage with a wide range of disciplines and offer unique perspectives from various locations across the globe. This volume asks: How can thinking with posthumanism disrupt normative approaches to social studies education and research in ways that promote imaginativeness, speculation, and nonconformity? How can a posthumanist lens be used to interrogate neoliberal, systemic, and oppressive conditions that reproduce and perpetuate in-humanness? Book Features: (1) a collection of essays that explore the phenomenon of posthuman approaches to social studies scholarship; (2) contributions by many prominent social studies education scholars representing seven countries--Canada, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States; (3) a foreword by Boni Wozolek and an afterword by Nathan Snaza, both of who have made significant contributions to critical posthumanism in education; (4) provocation chapters that push readers' thinking about the various ways that posthumanism connects to teaching and learning social studies; and (5) images of more-than-human entanglements (i.e., artwork, photography, poetry). Abstract

The Index is a compilation of materials to support schools in the process of inclusive school development and is organized around the three dimensions of inclusive schools: cultures, policies, and practices. Part 1 provides an introduction to the manual, discusses the Index process as an approach to inclusion of special needs students, and specifies what schools can hope to achieve by using the Index process. Part 2 explains the five phases of the Index process, which are: (1) starting the Index process; (2) finding out about the school; (3) producing an inclusive school development plan; (4) implementing the plan; and (5) reviewing the Index process. Part 3 describes the hierarchical Index system, which involves the three dimensions of inclusive schools, develops sections under each dimension, and provides indicators/questions to determine whether section goals are being achieved. Part 4 provides additional information including several questionnaires, a description of the Disability Equality in Education training for inclusion program, and suggestions for further reading. Abstract

Immigration has been a prominent political issue for decades, but particularly so with rising national populism. To understand current anti‐immigration opinion, we turn to the concept of relative deprivation, which, we argue, is fundamentally about entitlement and is at the heart of popular backlash against immigration. Examining the United Kingdom context, we predicted that immigration attitudes would be contingent on immigrant group status, with immigrants from low‐status or poorer countries (Poland, India) more likely to be perceived as encroaching on the majority group's entitlements than those from high‐status or richer countries (Germany, Australia). We further proposed moral devaluation (dehumanization and distrust) as a novel mechanism (over and above prejudice) underlying the conditional effects of relative deprivation on support for formal (anti‐immigration policies) and informal (hate crime) means of immigrant exclusion. A pilot study (n = 245) and cross‐sectional survey (n = 490) results supported our main prediction that status matters: participants felt more deprived relative to low‐ than high‐status immigrants, and this predicted stronger support for anti‐immigration policies both directly and through higher distrust (but not dehumanization). This research highlights the need to unpack the generic 'immigrant' category and study anti‐immigration sentiment in terms of group status and moral devaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
