The article discusses the claim that the word "England" was first used to describe that country by English King Egbert in the ninth century. It comments on the relation of this story in the chronicle the "Winchester Annals." The author considers the historiography on the subject and presents a theory that the name change may not have become permanent at that time. He analyzes conditions in Wessex, England in Egbert's reign and considers the later weakening of Egbert's power. The theory that England was named by the eleventh century English King Cnut is also noted.
