In Taiwan, firefighters are responsible for transporting confirmed coronavirus cases to hospitals or epidemic prevention hotels. During the epidemic, in order to reduce the chance of cross-infection between the general public and the fire brigade, traditional collective mobilization training was limited. As a solution, this study combines a fire command course (C1) and a VR simulation for training fire station captains (VRST) and then applies the pre- and post-test evaluation approaches and the after-class questionnaire to summarize the learning effectiveness. The results show that, from a total of 244 captains that were trained, the after-training scores are significantly better when compared with the scores before training (p < 0.05, Cohen’s d > 0.8). Additionally, the post-test scores collected during the epidemic (n = 158) have no significant difference compared to the ones taken before the outbreak (2019, n = 86) in terms of sizing up, decision making, and safety management. The training results are still improving. The after-class questionnaire showed that most trainees believed that VRST helped to improve their confidence as incident commanders (ICs) (mean = 4.63, top box = 66.98%), with the novice and suburban groups exhibiting more significant improvements in command ability after the training. After the pandemic, VRST can continue as a regular training method for ICs. Because of the intervention of VRST, the differences in the command experience between different IC groups can be compensated for.

Firefighters searching in dark and complex environments might lose their orientation and endanger themselves at the fireground. This study conducted experiments in the Training Facility of the New Taipei City Fire Department (NTFD), Taiwan. The objective of the experiments was to analyze the profile of each firefighter by a 13-factor self-report survey and their wayfinding time in dark and complex environments (DCEs). The results showed that age might be a marginally significant factor, and fear of confinement might be a significant factor that could affect firefighters' wayfinding time in the DCEs. The findings could provide strategies for improving the safety of firefighters working in such environments.

Emission factor and removal efficacy of PCNs are evaluated via the flue gas sampling of two MWIs equipped with different air pollution control devices (APCDs) in Taiwan. MWI-A is equipped with ESP, wet scrubber (WS) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), while cyclone (CY), semi-dry absorber (SDA), activated carbon injection (ACI) and baghouse (BH) are employed in MWI-B. The average concentrations of PCNs measured at stacks of MWI-A and MWI-B are 2.1 ng Nm -3 (0.218 pg TEQ Nm -3 ) and 23.2 ng Nm -3 (0.425 pg TEQ Nm -3 ), respectively. The emission factors of PCNs calculated from feeding rates of waste and stack sampling results range from 6.7 to 6.95 μg t -1 (0.790-1.45 ng TEQ t -1 ). PCNs are formed in ESP via chlorination, while SCR and SDA + ACI + BH are effective in removing PCNs with the overall efficacies of 97.6% and 94.3%, respectively. PCN removal efficiencies achieved with SCR and SDA + ACI + BH increase as chlorination level increases. Specifically, around 72% and 82% of Mono-CN are removed by SCR and SDA + ACI + BH, respectively. The removal efficacies of other homologues achieved with SCR are consistently high (96-100%). Dominances of Mono-to Tri-CNs in scrubbing liquid collected from WS and higher removal efficacies of these homologues achieved with WS + ESP compared with ESP alone indicate that WS can capture low chlorinated PCNs to some extent. The results suggest that CY + SDA + ACI + BH should be equipped in MWI for effective removal of PCNs, while ESP, WS and SCR should be utilized with precaution to eliminate PCNs formation and enhance the PCNs removal efficiency., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. This study investigated the characteristics of dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs emitted from two typical secondary copper metallurgical plants processing copper sludge equipped with different sets of air pollution control devices (APCDs). Results indicated that the emission factors of dl-PCNs and PCDD/Fs of plant A are 0.00775 and 1.09 μg TEQ/ton, respectively, which are remarkably lower than those of plant B (3.12, 181 and 25.5 μg TEQ/ton for dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, respectively). Dl-PCNs contributed 0.7-2.7% of total TEQ for flue gases and up to 2.6% of TEQ for ash samples. The TEQ concentration of dl-PCNs in fly ash individually exceeds the regulated level of 1 ng TEQ/g regulated by Taiwan EPA, indicating that emission and discharge of dl-PCNs should be regulated. The combination of semidry scrubber and activated carbon injection (ACI) + baghouse (BH) is effective for simultaneous removals of dl-PCNs and PCDD/Fs in plant A; while the combination of cyclone, secondary combustion chamber, ACI + BH and wet scrubber (WS) is not optimal for removing dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. Memory effect occurring within BH and WS is responsible for low removal efficiencies of these POPs in plant B. A new sesterterpene, erinacine S, and one cyathane diterpene xyloside, erinacine A, were isolated from the ethanol extract of the mycelia of Hericium erinaceus. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic and X-ray analysis. A 30-day oral course of erinacines A and S attenuated Aβ plaque burden in the brains of 5-month-old female APP/PS1 transgenic mice. Moreover, erinacines A and S significantly increased the level of insulin-degrading enzyme in cerebral cortex.

Background: Our primary objective was to detect malignant hyperthermia (MH)-susceptible persons and thereby prevent MH episodes. We identified variants in the ryanodine receptor isoform 1 using molecular pedigree analysis., Methods: Nineteen exons covering major hotspots were chosen for the primary screening by polymerase chain reaction, denaturing high performance liquid chromatography, and confirmed by direct sequencing., Results: Three novel variants involving amino acid changes were identified in two unrelated families as Met2698Arg, Glu2724Lys in exon 51 and Leu2785Val in exon 53., Conclusions: Three novel ryanodine receptor isoform 1 variants located either near or within the central domain might predispose carriers to MH.

Three new compounds, 19-hydroxylabda-8(17)-en-16,15-olide (1), 3beta,19-dihydroxylabda-8(17),11E-dien-16,15-olide (2), and 13-epi-3beta,19-dihydroxylabda-8(17),11E-dien-16,15-olide (3), together with four known compounds, 19-hydroxylabda-8(17),13-dien-16,15-olide (4), 14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide (5), 14-deoxyandrographolide, and pinusolidic acid, were isolated from the fruiting bodies of Antrodia camphorata. The structures of compounds 1-3 were elucidated by the analysis of their spectroscopic data. The in vitro neuroprotective activity of all compounds was evaluated, and compounds 1-5 protected neurons from Abeta damage by 39.2, 35.0, 36.7, 30.6, and 27.0%, respectively, at concentrations between 5 and 20 microM.
