Crop yields are adversely affected by climate change; therefore, it is crucial to develop climate adaptation strategies to mitigate the impacts of increasing climate variability on the agriculture system to ensure food security. As one of the largest potato-producing provinces in Canada, Prince Edward Island (PEI) has recently experienced significant instability in potato production. PEI's local farmers and stakeholders are extremely concerned about the prospects for the future of potato farming industries in the context of climate change. This study aims to use the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) potato model to simulate future potato yields under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) climate scenarios (including SSP1–1.9, SSP1–2.6, SSP2–4.5, SSP3–7.0, and SSP5–8.5). The study evaluates the combined effects of changing climatic conditions at local scales (i.e., warming temperature and changing precipitation patterns) and increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere. The results indicate future significant declines in potato yield in PEI under the current farming practices. In particular, under the high-emission scenarios (e.g., SSP3–7.0 and SSP5–8.5), the potato yield in PEI would decline by 48% and 60% in the 2070s and by 63% and 80% by 2090s; even under the low-emission scenarios (i.e., SSP1–1.9 and SSP1–2.6), the potato yield in PEI would still decline by 6–10%. This implies that it is important to develop effective climate adaptation measures (e.g., adjusting farming practices and introducing supplemental irrigation plans) to ensure the long-term sustainability of potato production in PEI. Common scab (CS) is a potato disease that significantly decreases the market value of potato tubers after the development of necrotic lesions on their surface. Streptomyces scabiei is the main causal agent of CS; however, other closely related species, including S. acidiscabies and S. turgidiscabies, have also been shown to cause the disease. In this study, we characterized the genetic and phenotypic diversity of Streptomyces spp. causing CS in Prince Edward Island, the main potato-producing province in Canada. Two hundred and ninety-six pathogenic Streptomyces spp. isolates were retrieved from diseased tubers harvested from six fields located across a longitudinal geographical gradient. Genome fingerprinting analyses using repetitive elements PCR (ERIC- and BOX-PCR) revealed 14 distinct genetic groups. Thirteen groups were taxonomically affiliated with S. scabiei, whereas the fourteenth group was affiliated with S. acidiscabies. Their geographical distribution was characterized and revealed that on average between six and eight different genetic groups were detected per field, with variable abundance. Virulence assays showed strong differences in virulence between the genetic groups, ranging from low to highly virulent. Interestingly, pathogenic Streptomyces spp. populations in each field seem to be dominated by the most virulent genetic groups. The results obtained will contribute to better understanding of the population dynamic of pathogenic Streptomyces spp. causing CS of potato and promoting the development of more efficient detection and intervention tools to manage this important potato disease. The Atlantic provinces of Canada – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador – face persistent social and economic challenges, including low labour productivity, high levels of public debt and a declining workforce. There are persistent issues of low wages and high levels of underemployment and seasonal/part-time work. The policy responses proposed to tackle these challenges have focused on innovation clusters in science and technology fields, the attraction and retention of skills and unskilled immigrants to the region, and some upskilling of the local workforce. Absent is a consideration of the role of employers and businesses, and the quality of jobs available in addressing these challenges. Decent jobs have implications for individual, societal and organizational outcomes, including innovative work behaviours. This article argues that there is a need to consider job quality and how good quality jobs can support organizational and business innovation outcomes, as part of these policy debates for local economic development. Gender portrayal in advertising has been the focus of researchers for decades. In previous research, females were portrayed as being more submissive and playful than their male counterparts. This study builds on previous research by focusing on gender portrayal in tourism advertising in Maritime Canadian travel directories. A random sample was drawn from each of the travel directories for the three Maritime Provinces in Canada: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. The results revealed that differences in gender portrayal in the print ads were minimal. Gender portrayal was consistent across genders and generally involved positive imagery without negative female stereotypes. The only statistically significant difference between males and females portrayed in ads were a higher percentage of females who were smiling in ad images. There is strong evidence for climate change leading to a rise in temperatures and a change in precipitation trends. These environmental changes pose a threat to pavement infrastructure worldwide. Therefore, it is necessary to modify pavement design procedures to consider climate change. In addition, it is necessary to consider suitable pavement materials for future climate. The objective of this study is to develop a framework for selecting an appropriate adaptation strategy to mitigate climate change impact. To fulfill this, the influence of climate change on long-term pavement performance in Canada has been quantified over sixteen Canadian pavement sections located over various provinces in Canada. In addition, the fundamental causes of pavement deterioration due to climate change were determined using ten different climate change models. Various adaptation strategies such as upgrading asphalt binder grade, increasing the thickness of asphaltic concrete layer, increasing the base layer thickness, and using stabilized base layers were analyzed to reduce pavement deterioration and to extend the service life of the pavement. Unlike the other studies, pavement temperatures were determined using Enhanced Integrated Climate Model (EICM) to determine the change in binder grade for the future climate in the adaptation process. The study found that by 2070 all examined locations will require an upgrade in binder grade and the majority will require an upgrade in mixture gradation. Furthermore, the east and west coast will be more vulnerable to climate change and require additional measures in comparison to Central Canada. Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island are the only locations that will need to consider a change in asphalt thickness while British Columbia is the only location eventually requiring a stabilized base. Canada is a large multicultural counter with ten provinces and two territories. Education is a provincial responsibility and therefore there is no federal office of education. This results in varied approaches to practice. The majority of the provinces in Canada have educational policies that support inclusive education practices. Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in the poorest region in Canada. It has been implementing inclusive education practices for over a decade and has seen significant success. This paper presents the situation in Canada and highlights the success of one province. One significant reason the province has been successful in implementing inclusive education practices has been the commitment of many partners, the province, schools, university and community. Background: The emergency department (ED) sensitive hospital standardized mortality ratio (ED-HSMR) measures risk-adjusted mortality for patients admitted to hospital with conditions for which ED care may improve health outcomes. This study aimed to describe in-hospital mortality across Canadian provinces using the ED-HSMR.Methods: Hospital discharge data were analyzed from April 2009 to March 2012. The ED-HSMR was calculated as the ratio of observed deaths among patients with emergency-sensitive conditions in a hospital during a year (2010-11 or 2011-12) to the expected deaths for the same patients during the reference year (2009-10), multiplied by 100. The expected deaths were estimated using predictive models fitted from the reference year. Aggregated provincial ED-HSMR values were calculated. A HSMR value above or below 100 respectively means that more or fewer deaths than expected occurred within a province.Results: During the study period, 1,335,379 patients were admitted to hospital in Canada with an emergency-sensitive condition as the most responsible diagnosis. More in-hospital deaths (95% confidence interval) than expected were respectively observed for the years 2010-11 and 2011-12 in Newfoundland [124.3 (116.3-132.6); & 117.6 (110.1-125.5)] and Nova Scotia [116.4 (110.7-122.5) & 108.7 (103.0-114.5)], while mortality was as expected in Prince Edward Island [99.9 (86.5-114.8) & 100.7 (87.5-115.3)] and Manitoba [99.2 (94.5-104.1) & 98.3 (93.5-103.3)], and less than expected in all other provinces and territories.Conclusions: Our study revealed important variation in risk-adjusted mortality for patients admitted to hospital with emergency-sensitive conditions among Canadian provinces.
