Apart from northern and central China, the fossil record of the latest Miocene and Early Pliocene of Asia is not well documented and the record of South China during this interval is especially poor. Shuitangba, a site in Yunnan Province, offers a rare window into the paleoenvironment of the latest Miocene in southwestern China. Over 2400 vertebrate and macrobotanical specimens have been recovered from the site. The faunal assemblage is dominated by aquatic avian taxa and many of the mammalian taxa are those that indicate densely vegetated, water-margin habitats. Pollen and carpological remains indicate a temperate to subtropical, broad-leaved/coniferous forest around standing water, with more open areas containing grasses and herbs. Analyses of clay minerals, chemical weathering, and enamel stable isotopes suggest that Shuitangba was warmer and more humid than today, possibly with more pronounced seasonality. Results of community structure analysis indicate that the Shuitangba mammalian community was different from those of other Late Miocene Chinese sites in the high proportions of aquatic-dependent mammalian taxa. While Shuitangba shared mammalian faunal elements with other Late Miocene sites in Yunnan, it was still faunally distinct. Further, Shuitangba was depauperate in its mammalian fauna, which may have been a result of the depositional setting rather than a true reflection of regional faunal diversity. • Shuitangba is a unique window into the Late Miocene. • Shuitangba sampled a densely vegetated water-margin habitat. • Shuitangba mammal community differed from those of other Late Miocene Chinese sites. Accurate determination of wind load is of great importance for the wind-resistant design of building structures. Despite the fact that air density varies systematically with altitude, and somewhat less so with barometric pressure, air temperature, and latitude, there is a lack of studies on the dependence of wind load on air density especially for highrise buildings. This article presents a special study on this topic. The dependence of air density on latitude, season and altitude is investigated first, based on meteorological records at several national stations in China. The height-dependence of air density in the inner region of a tropical cyclone (TC) is highlighted, since there is a fast development of highrise buildings in TC-prone areas and TC wind load dominates the design wind loads for such slender wind-sensitive structures. A data-driven model for the height-dependence of TC air density is established. It is shown that the measured TC air density is reduced by 8 % –10% compared with the values recommended in the wind load codes. The dependence of wind load and wind-induced structural response on air density for a supertall building is then analyzed through a combined usage of the proposed TC air density model and wind tunnel testing. Results suggest that the wind load and wind-induced response of the building obtained by considering the height-dependence of air density can be decreased by as much as ~12 % compared with those without considering such effects. A high cell-surface hydrophobic bacterium, strain A18 T , was isolated from a waste digestion system in Chaozhou, China. Cells of strain A18 T were Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile, and rod-shaped. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene showed that strain A18 T shared less than 94.2% sequence similarity to all validated species in the family Chitinophagaceae, and formed a distinct lineage close to genera Niabella and Terrimonas in the neighbor-joining tree, indicating that strain A18 T is a novel species. Genome-based phylogenetic analyses revealed that strain A18 T is affiliated to the genus Niabella. The cellular components, including iso-C 15:0 and iso-C 15:1 G as the major fatty acids, menaquinone-7 as the respiratory quinone and a DNA G + C content of 40.54% supported strain A18 T as a member of the genus Niabella. However, the physiological and biochemical properties, such as enzyme activities, carbon source utilization and C 18:0 3-OH as another major fatty acids, distinguished strain A18 T from its close related species. The extinction risk of the giant panda has been demoted from "endangered" to "vulnerable" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, but its habitat is more fragmented than ever before, resulting in 33 isolated giant panda populations according to the fourth national survey released by the Chinese government. Further comprehensive investigations of the genetic background and in-depth assessments of the conservation status of wild populations are still necessary and urgently needed. Here, we sequenced the genomes of 612 giant pandas with an average depth of ~26× and generated a high-resolution map of genomic variation with more than 20 million variants covering wild individuals from six mountain ranges and captive representatives in China. We identified distinct genetic clusters within the Minshan population by performing a fine-grained genetic structure. The estimation of inbreeding and genetic load associated with historical population dynamics suggested that future conservation efforts should pay special attention to the Qinling and Liangshan populations. Releasing captive individuals with a genetic background similar to the recipient population appears to be an advantageous genetic rescue strategy for recovering the wild giant panda populations, as this approach introduces fewer deleterious mutations into the wild population than mating with differentiated lineages. Background:  This study aims to analyze breast cancer burden attributable to high body mass index (BMI) and high fasting plasma glucose (FPG) in China from 1990 to 2019., Methods: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2019. Deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were used for attributable burden, and age-period-cohort (APC) model was used to evaluate the independent effects of age, period and birth cohort., Results: In 2019, the age-standardized mortality and DALY rates of breast cancer attributable to high BMI were 1.107 (95% UI: 0.311, 2.327) and 29.990 (8.384, 60.713) per 100 000, and mortality and DALY rates attributable to high FPG were 0.519 (0.095, 1.226) and 13.662 (2.482, 32.425) per 100 000. From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized mortality and DALY rates of breast cancer attributable to high BMI increased by 1.192% and 1.180%, and the trends of high FPG were not statistically significant. The APC results showed that the age effects of high BMI and high FPG-mortality and DALY rates increased, with the highest rates in the age group over 80 years. The birth cohort effects of high BMI showed "inverted V" shapes, while high FPG showed downward trends., Conclusions: Age was the main reason for the increase of attributable burden, and postmenopausal women were the high-risk groups. A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, nonmotile, rod-shaped, and yellow-pigmented bacterium, designated strain JXAS1 T , was isolated from a freshwater sample collected from Poyang Lake in China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the isolate belonged to the genus Flavobacterium , being closest to Flavobacterium pectinovorum DSM 6368 T (98.61 %). The genome size of strain JXAS1 T was 4.66 Mb with DNA G+C content 35.7 mol%. The average nucleotide identity and in silico DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain JXAS1 T and its closest relatives were below the threshold values of 95 and 70 %, respectively. The strain contained menaquinone 6 (MK-6) as the predominant menaquinone and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified glycolipid, and one unidentified polar lipid. The major fatty acids (>5 %) were iso-C 15 : 0 , summed feature 3 (C 16 : 1  ω 7 c and/or C 16 : 1  ω 6 c ), C 15 : 0 , iso-C 17 : 0 3OH, iso-C 15 : 0 3OH, and summed feature 9 (iso-C 17 : 1  ω 9 c and/or 10-methyl C 16 : 0 ). Based on phylogenetic, genotypic, and phenotypic evidence, the isolated strain represents a new species in the genus Flavobacterium , and the name Flavobacterium poyangense is proposed. Background: Identification is the first step for treatment of hypertension. However, the awareness rate of hypertension was not high globally. This study aimed to examine the potential role of health insurance for early-identifying hypertension among urban older residents in China., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, urban residents aged 60+ years were chosen from Nanjing municipality of China in 2018. The outcome measure was hypertension status ("no hypertension," "diagnosed hypertension" or "un-diagnosed hypertension"). Independent variable was health insurance ("Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance scheme, UEBMI" or "Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance scheme, URBMI"). Logistic regression models were introduced to estimate odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to examine the association between health insurance and hypertension., Results: Totally, 19,742 participants completed the study. Among overall, URBMI and UEBMI participants, 47.2% (95%CI = 46.5, 47.9%), 38.4% (95%CI = 37.3, 39.6%) and 52.1% (95%CI = 51.2, 53.0%), separately, were diagnosed with hypertension, while the prevalence of un-diagnosed hypertension was 12.7% (95%CI = 12.2, 13.2%), 18.5% (95%CI = 17.6, 19.4%) and 9.6% (95%CI = 9.1, 10.1%), respectively. For overall participants, those with UEBMI were more likely to have hypertension identified (OR = 1.20; 95%CI = 1.11, 1.29) and at lower odds to experience un-diagnosed hypertension (OR = 0.68; 95%CI = 0.61, 0.76) compared to their counterparts with URBMI after control for potential confounders. Moreover, such associations of health insurance with diagnosed and un-diagnosed hypertension were also observed among participants stratified by age and gender., Conclusion: Favorable health insurance may be a pathway for identifying hypertension among urban older residents in China. Objective: Develop and psychometrically test the physiopsychological disorders scale for medical rescuers fighting epidemics (PDS-MRFE)., Method: A three-phase approach was used to develop and test the physiopsychological disorders scale: (1) creating the item pool, (2) preliminarily evaluating items, and (3) refining the scale and estimating the psychometric properties. The items of the instrument were generated based on a comprehensive literature review and a qualitative study conducted with 31 medical rescuers (18 nurses and 13 doctors) fighting epidemics. A preliminary evaluation of items was conducted using content validity which was evaluated by a panel of 15 experts. Validity and reliability examinations were conducted to refine the scale and evaluate its psychometric properties. This was done using two different samples. Specifically, Sample A (360 medical rescuers) was employed for item reduction and exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and Sample B (287 medical rescuers) was employed for the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and determination of other psychometric properties (i.e., reliability, concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity), which further confirmed the structure of the scale and evaluated its final psychometric properties., Results: The final scale has 39 items with three subscales, including before, during, and after rescue. The exploratory factor analysis result indicated that the before-rescue scale of four items, during-rescue of 21 items, and after-rescue of 14 items explained 52.07%, 69.75%, and 52.30% of the cumulative variance, respectively. The confirmatory factor analysis result indicated that model fit indices of three subscales were acceptable and showed evidence of adequate content, convergent, discriminate, and concurrent validity. The Cronbach's α coefficients for each subscale and all dimensions ranged from 0.81 to 0.92, indicating good reliability for the PDS-MRFE., Conclusions: The physiopsychological disorders scale is a psychometrically valid and reliable instrument and can be used in both clinical practice and research to evaluate different physiopsychological disorders at different medical rescue stages among medical rescuers fighting epidemics., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Background: Studies on various thrombopoietic agents for cancer treatment-induced thrombocytopenia (CTIT) in China are lacking. This study aimed to provide detailed clinical profiles to understand the outcomes and safety of different CTIT treatment regimens., Methods: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, 1664 questionnaires were collected from 33 hospitals between March 1 and July 1, 2021. Patients aged >18 years were enrolled who were diagnosed with CTIT and treated with recombinant interleukin 11 (rhIL-11), recombinant thrombopoietin (rhTPO), or a thrombopoietin receptor agonist (TPO-RA). The outcomes, compliance, and safety of different treatments were analyzed., Results: Among the 1437 analyzable cases, most patients were treated with either rhTPO alone (49.3%) or rhIL-11 alone (27.0%). The most common combination regimen used was rhTPO and rhIL-11 (10.9%). Platelet transfusions were received by 117 cases (8.1%). In multivariate analysis, rhTPO was associated with a significantly lower proportion of platelet recovery, platelet transfusion, and hospitalization due to chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) than rhIL-11 alone. No significant difference was observed in the time taken to achieve a platelet count of >100 × 10 9 /L and chemotherapy dose reduction due to CIT among the different thrombopoietic agents. The outcomes of thrombocytopenia in 170 patients who received targeted therapy and/or immunotherapy are also summarized. The results show that the proportion of platelet recovery was similar among the different thrombopoietic agents. No new safety signals related to thrombopoietic agents were observed in this study. A higher proportion of physicians preferred to continue treatment with TPO-RA alone than with rhTPO and rhIL-11., Conclusions: This survey provides an overview of CTIT and the application of various thrombopoietic agents throughout China. Comparison of monotherapy with rhIL-11, rhTPO, and TPO-RA requires further randomized clinical trials. Background: The parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are under great pressure and experience discrimination in their daily lives, which affects their family quality of life (FQOL)., Objective: METHODS: A total of 237 parents of children with ASD were recruited in a university-affiliated hospital in Guangzhou, China, from October 2020 to April 2021 by convenience sampling. As a member of Aceratheriinae, the genus Plesiaceratherium in Europe is widely distributed and highly diverse. However, only one species of Plesiaceratherium ( i.e. , P. gracile ) exists in China with a discontinuous distribution range. Recently, we have discovered new materials of Plesiaceratherium in the lower layers of the Zhang'enbao Formation exposed in Miaoerling in Tongxin County, China. The new materials are well-preserved and can be separated from other Plesiaceratherium species by the following combination of features: the long and generally flat skull, with closed frontoparietal crests; the deep nasal notch at the level of P4; the high supraorbital margin, with its anterior margin at the level of the M1/M2 boundary; the medium-sized upper I1, with an oval abraded surface; the semi-molarized upper premolars with the protocone and hypocone joined by a lingual bridge; the strong constrictions of protocone on the upper molars; the absent buccal cingulum on upper cheek teeth; the cheek teeth are covered by cement on the buccal walls; the convex base of mandibular corpus; the inclined backward ramus; and the mandibular foramen above the teeth neck. Based on the combination of characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, we herein establish the new species as Plesiaceratherium tongxinense sp. nov. living in the late Early Miocene. Background: The rising burden of thyroid cancer (TC) is a public health problem in Asia. Predicting the future burden of TC in Asian countries is essential for disease prevention., Methods: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 for five Asian countries. We applied Bayesian age-period-cohort models to predict morbidity and mortality to 2035 and calculated age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR). Furthermore, the estimated annual percentage change was calculated to evaluate the variation of ASIR and ASMR., Results: By 2035, predictions suggest that cases of TC will reach 75.56 × 10 3 in China, 70.22 × 10 3 in India, 15.78 × 10 3 in the Republic of Korea, 9.01 × 10 3 in Japan and 5.55 × 10 3 in Thailand, respectively. Except Japan, a significant upward trend of ASIR of TC will be observed in five Asian countries. The deaths from TC will increase in five countries and India will become the highest reaching 14.07 × 10 3 . The ASMR will rise to 0.83/100 000 in India and 1.06/100 000 in the Republic of Korea, while it will drop to 0.35/100 000 in China, 0.43/100 000 in Japan and 0.50/100 000 in Thailand. In further predictions projected by sex, the growth rate of ASIR is reported higher in males than in females among most countries. ASMR of male will exceed that of females in China and Thailand by 2035., Conclusion: The disease burden caused by TC will further increase in five Asian countries, especially for men. Background: Detection and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are prerequisites for early interventions. However, few studies focused on this topic., Aim: This study aims to characterize the timing from symptom detection to intervention in children with ASD and identify predictors of age at ASD diagnosis, presence of intervention, and the time lag between detection and diagnosis., Methods and Procedures: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 303 parents (111 fathers and 192 mothers, 21-54 years) of children with ASD in Guangzhou, China., Outcomes and Results: The median time from symptom observation to the first doctor visit was 3 months, while the time to ASD diagnosis averaged 6 months. Most children (76.24 %) were diagnosed within one year after detection, and 25.58 % had no intervention after diagnosis. Predictors of earlier ASD diagnosis included ASD-related symptoms identified at an older age, less serious symptoms, and initial symptoms with atypical motor development and sensory anomalies. ASD-related symptoms observed at an older age, initial symptoms with social deficits, sensory anomalies, and without language impairment, primary caregivers other than parents, families with lower income, and less social support utilization increased the odds of a time lag between detection and diagnosis. Children with fathers having lower education were less likely to receive interventions., Conclusions and Implications: Earlier ASD identification and intervention might be facilitated by health education on typical symptoms of ASD for parents with young children and incorporating ASD screening during routine health examinations for children. For children whose primary caregivers are not their parents and from lower-income families, additional support may be required for timely diagnosis after reporting ASD-related symptoms. Moreover, more intervention supports are expected for children whose fathers have lower education levels. Objectives: To investigate the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components with socioeconomic status (SES) among general and gender-specific adult population in Nanjing municipality, China., Design: Cross-sectional study., Participants: 13287 participants completed the survey. A participant: (1) must be a local registered resident, (2) aged 18+ years, (3) had no literal or physical/mental problems and (4) was not pregnant., Study Measures: MetS was the outcome variable, which was defined based on the diagnostic criteria released by the Chinese Diabetes Society. SES was the main explanatory measure, which was indicated with educational attainment and family average income (FAI), separately., Results: The prevalence of MetS was 19.7% (95% CI=19.0% to 20.4%) among overall participants, and 24.6% (95% CI=23.5% to 25.6%) and 15.5% (95% CI=14.7% to 16.4%) for men and women, respectively. After controlling for potential confounders, participants with either college level (OR=0.51, 95% CI=0.43 to 0.60) or high school level education (OR=0.78, 95% CI=0.70 to 0.90) were at lower odds to experience MetS compared with those with primary education, while only those within upper FAI tertile were at significantly lower risk of MetS relative to their counterparts within lower FAI category (OR=0.85, 95% CI=0.76 to 0.97) among overall participants. Meanwhile, with respect to the five components of MetS, higher educational level predicted lower waist circumference (WC), triglycerides, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and fasting glucose concentration among all participants. And higher FAI was associated with lower WC and SBP and DBP in women, and with lower SBP and DBP in men., Conclusions: Education and FAI each were inversely associated with MetS and its components at the present stage of economic development in Nanjing Municipality of China. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the longitudinal circulating eosinophil (EOS) data impacted by the COVID-19 vaccine, the predictive role of circulating EOS in the disease severity, and its association with T cell immunity in patients with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 variant infection in Shanghai, China., Methods: We collected a cohort of 1,157 patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron/BA.2 variant in Shanghai, China. These patients were diagnosed or admitted between Feb 20, 2022, and May 10, 2022, and were classified as asymptomatic (n = 705), mild (n = 286) and severe (n = 166) groups. We compiled and analyzed data of patients' clinical demographic characteristics, laboratory findings, and clinical outcomes., Results: COVID-19 vaccine reduced the incidence of severe cases. Severe patients were shown to have declined peripheral blood EOS. Both the 2 doses and 3 doses of inactivated COVID-19 vaccines promoted the circulating EOS levels. In particular, the 3rd booster shot of inactivated COVID-19 vaccine was shown to have a sustained promoting effect on circulating EOS. Univariate analysis showed that there was a significant difference in age, underlying comorbidities, EOS, lymphocytes, CRP, CD4, and CD8 T cell counts between the mild and the severe patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis and ROC curve analysis indicate that circulating EOS (AUC = 0.828, p = 0.025), the combination of EOS and CD4 T cell (AUC = 0.920, p = 0.017) can predict the risk of disease severity in patients with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.2 variant infection., Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccine promotes circulating EOS and reduces the risk of severe illness, and particularly the 3rd booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine sustainedly promotes EOS. Rice-rape rotation is a widely practiced cropping system in China. However, changes in soil properties and management could change the bioavailability of Cd, In order to explore the occurrence state, transportation and transformation characteristics of heavy metals Cd and Zn in rice-rape rotation system in Guizhou karst area with high background value of Cd. In the karst rice-rape rotation area, the physical and chemical properties of soil, chemical specifications and activities of Cd and Zn at different soil depths and during various crop growth stages, and the bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn in different tissues of rice and rape were studied by field experiment and laboratory analysis. The bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn and the effects of physical and chemical soil properties on the activities and bioavailabilities of Cd and Zn during rice-rape rotation were explored. The findings revealed that soil particle size, composition, pH, redox potential, soil organic matter, and Cd and Zn contents varied dramatically, especially in deep soils. The physical and chemical properties of the deep and surface soils were significantly related to the bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn. Cd and Zn are activated during crop rotation. Cd was easier to be enriched in rice, while Zn was easier to be enriched in rape. The correlation between Cd and Zn contents in Brassica campestris L and their enrichment abilities were not significant, but that in Oryza sativa L were significant. During rice-rape rotation, the chemical speciations and activities of Cd and Zn changed with the changes of soil properties and waterlogging environment. Black carbon (BC) is a vital climate forcer in the atmosphere, but measurements of BC vertical profiles near the surface remain limited. This study investigates time-resolved vertical profiling of BC in both dry (December 2017) and wet (August 2018) seasons in Shenzhen, China, at a 356-m meteorological tower. In the dry season, five micro-aethalometers were deployed at different heights (2, 50, 100, 200, and 350 m), while four heights (2, 100, 200, and 350 m) were measured in the wet season. The concentrations of equivalent BC (eBC) showed a decreasing trend with altitude in the dry season, while a weaker vertical gradient was observed in the wet season. The diurnal variability of eBC in the dry season is also more significant than in the wet season. Correlation analysis between eBC concentrations at the ground and those at the upper levels suggest a better vertical mixing of eBC in the wet season than in the dry season. In the wet season when south wind prevailed, eBC concentration at ground level was likely reduced by the large amount of vegetation cover south to the sampling site. In the dry season, eBC concentrations at 350 m show little dependence on wind speed, implying that local emissions have a limited effect on eBC concentrations at 350 m. In the wet season when brown carbon influence was weak, higher wind speed leads to a higher Ångström exponent (AAE) at 350 m, likely associated with more aged BC particles. Cluster analysis of backward trajectories suggests that high eBC concentration was associated with air masses from Central China in both seasons. Background: Previous studies have found that the dissemination pattern and delivery mechanism of information can provide crucial resources and empowerment for individuals to the promotion of health literacy. The present study investigates how health information sources are associated with health literacy among older adults in west China, and tries to explain the mechanisms underlying the link between health information sources and health literacy in the Chinese context., Methods: The cross-sectional study employed a representative sample of 812 urban citizens aged 60 and older in 2017 in Western China., Results: We found that health information sources including healthcare practitioners (B = 4.577, p < 0.001), neighbors (B = 2.545, p < 0.05), newspapers (B = 4.280, p < 0.001), and television (B = 4.638, p < 0.001) were positively associated with health literacy. Additionally, age (B = -1.781, p < 0.001) was negatively associated with health literacy, and the socio-economic status factors including minority (B = -10.005, p < 0.001), financial strain status of perceived very difficult (B = -10.537, p < 0.001), primary school (B = 11.461, p < 0.001), junior high school (B = 18.016, p < 0.001), polytechnic school or senior high school (B = 21.905, p < 0.001), college and above (B = 23.433, p < 0.001) were significantly linked to health literacy, and suffering from chronic diseases (B = 3.430, p < 0.01) was also positively related to health literacy., Conclusions: Health information sources including healthcare practitioners, neighbors, newspapers, and television have a strong influence on health literacy, which implies that the four main types of sources are the important patterns of health information dissemination in the reinforcement of health literacy. In addition, the present findings also indicate age, minority and disease differences in health literacy and confirm the influence of enabling factors including educational attainment and financial strain on health literacy. Based on these findings and their implications, specific evidence is presented for the reinforcement of health literacy in interpersonal and mass communication, and in the educational and financial settings in the Chinese context. The present results also suggest that the age-specific, minority-specific and disease-specific measures should be taken to promote health literacy among older adults.

A novel Gram-negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterium, designated J26 T , was isolated from the sediment of a river in Ronggui, Foshan city, China. Strain J26 T grew optimally at 0 % (w/v) NaCl, pH 6.5-7.5, and 30 °C, and it formed milky white irregular colonies on Reasoner's 2A agar medium. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain J26 T had the highest similarity to Tabrizicola aquatica RCRI19 T (97.1 %) and formed a distinct clade in the genus Tabrizicola . Cellular components of J26 T supported this strain as a member of the genus Tabrizicola . The predominant fatty acids were C 18 : 1  ω 7 c , C 18 : 1  ω 7 c -11 methyl and C 16 : 0 . Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphorylethanolamine. Ubiquinone Q-10 was the major respiratory quinone, and the DNA G+C content was 64.2 mol%. However, low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and average nucleotide identity (73.56 % for ANIb between strain J26 T with RCRI19 T ) demonstrated that strain J26 T should be assigned to a novel species. Moreover, the differences between J26 T and RCRI19 T in terms of physiological and biochemical properties, such as carbon, nitrogen and sulphur metabolism, further supported that J26 T represents a novel species, for which the name Tabrizicola rongguiensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is J26 T (=GDMCC 1.2843 T =KCTC 92112 T ).

The purpose of this paper was to better understand the long-term care preferences of older people based on intergenerational demonstration effects and social exchange theory, derived from the literature on intergenerational family relationships. The authors relied on the 2014 China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey database to test the study hypotheses. The results indicated that living with grandchildren was negatively related to the institutional care preferences of older people. Family members' attitudes and older people's life satisfaction significantly mediated the relationship between living with grandchildren and their institutional care preferences. Gender and marital status had potentially diverse effects on institutional care preferences. Therefore, in the context of China's culture of filial piety, social exchange, and intergenerational demonstration, motivation may help foster intergenerational exchange and reciprocity in eldercare arrangements.

In bilingual word recognition, cross-language activation has been found in unimodal bilinguals (e.g., Chinese-English bilinguals) and bimodal bilinguals (e.g., American Sign language-English bilinguals). However, it remains unclear how signs' phonological parameters, spoken words' orthographic and phonological representation, and language proficiency affect cross-language activation in bimodal bilinguals. To resolve the issues, we recruited deaf Chinese sign language (CSL)-Chinese bimodal bilinguals as participants. We conducted two experiments with the implicit priming paradigm and the semantic relatedness decision task. Experiment 1 first showed cross-language activation from Chinese to CSL, and the CSL words' phonological parameter affected the cross-language activation. Experiment 2 further revealed inverse cross-language activation from CSL to Chinese. The Chinese words' orthographic and phonological representation played a similar role in the cross-language activation. Moreover, a comparison between Experiments 1 and 2 indicated that language proficiency influenced cross-language activation. Low molybdenum (Mo) bioavailability in acidic soil obstructs vegetable nitrogen assimilation and thus increases the health risk of vegetable ingestion due to nitrate accumulation. Constantly providing available Mo in acidic soil is a challenge for decreasing nitrate accumulation in vegetables. In this study, three Mo application methods, including biochar-based Mo slow-release fertilizer (Mo-biochar), seed dressing, and basal application, were investigated to enhance Mo bioavailability in acidic soil and nitrogen assimilation in Chinese flowering cabbage (Brassica parachinensis). The results showed that Mo-biochar constantly and sufficiently supplied Mo nutrients throughout the growing period of Brassica parachinensis, as evidenced by the soil available Mo, plant Mo uptake, and Mo values. The improved Mo supply was attributed to the alleviation of acidic soil (pH from 5.10 to 6.99) and the slow release of Mo adsorbed on biochar. Mo-biochar increased the nitrate reductase (NR) activity by 238.6% and glutamate dehydrogenase activity by 27.5%, indicating an enhancement of the rate-limiting steps of nitrogen assimilation, especially for nitrate reduction and amino acid synthesis. The increase in Mo-containing NR could be directly ascribed to the high level of Mo in Brassica parachinensis. Compared with the control, the nitrate content of Brassica parachinensis decreased by 42.9% due to the nitrate reduction induced by increased NR. Additionally, Mo-biochar was beneficial to vegetable growth and quality. In contrast, the transformation from NO 3 - to NH 4 + was blocked with Mo seed dressing and basal application because of low Mo bioavailability in the soil, resulting in a high nitrate content in Brassica parachinensis. Conclusively, Mo-biochar can slowly release Mo and improve the neutral environment for Mo bioavailability, which is an effective strategy to mitigate the high nitrate accumulation of vegetables planted in acidic soil., (Copyright © 2022. Wetland vegetation classification using deep learning algorithm and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images have attracted increased attentions. However, there exist several challenges in mapping karst wetland vegetation due to its fragmentation, intersection, and high heterogeneity of vegetation patches. This study proposed a novel approach to classify karst vegetation in Huixian National Wetland Park, the largest karst wetland in China by fusing single-class SegNet classification using the maximum probability algorithm. A new optimized post-classification algorithm was developed to eliminate the stitching traces caused by SegNet model prediction. This paper evaluated the effect of multi-class and fusion of multiple single-class SegNet models with different EPOCH values on mapping karst vegetation using UAV images. Finally, this paper carried out a comparison of classification accuracies between object-based Random Forest (RF) and fusion of single-class SegNet models. The specific conclusions of this paper include the followings: (1) fusion of four single-class SegNet models produced better classification for karst wetland vegetation than multi-class SegNet model, and achieved the highest overall accuracy of 87.34%; (2) the optimized post-classification algorithm improved classification accuracy of SegNet model by eliminating splicing traces; (3) classification performance of single-class SegNet model outperformed multi-class SegNet model, and improved classification accuracy (F1-Score) ranging from 10 to 25%; (4) Fusion of single-class SegNet models and object-based RF classifier both produced good classifications for karst wetland vegetation, and achieved over 87% overall accuracy., (© 2022. Of the many peculiarities that enable the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), a member of the order Carnivora, to adapt to life as a dedicated bamboo feeder, its extra "thumb" is arguably the most celebrated yet enigmatic. In addition to the normal five digits in the hands of most mammals, the giant panda has a greatly enlarged wrist bone, the radial sesamoid, that acts as a sixth digit, an opposable "thumb" for manipulating bamboo. We report the earliest enlarged radial sesamoid, already a functional opposable "thumb," in the ancestral panda Ailurarctos from the late Miocene site of Shuitangba in Yunnan Province, China. However, since the late Miocene, the "thumb" has not enlarged further because it must be balanced with the constraints of weight bearing while walking in a plantigrade posture. This morphological adaptation in panda evolution thus reflects a dual function of the radial sesamoid for both bamboo manipulation and weight distribution. The latter constraint could be the main reason why the panda's false thumb never evolved into a full digit. The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected people's daily lives, including their dietary behaviors. Using a panel data set of 31 provinces from 2015 to 2020, this study employed two-way fixed effects (FE) models to examine the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on dietary consumption among Chinese residents. The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic positively affected residents' consumption of grain, eggs, dairy, and white meat (poultry and aquatic products), while it had a negative effect on individuals' red meat consumption in both urban and rural areas. These results were robust to different measures of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the number of confirmed cases, suspect cases, and dead cases. Comparatively, the changes in food consumption induced by the COVID-19 pandemic were more prominent for Chinese residents who lived in rural areas than urban areas. In addition, compared to their counterparts, the dietary consequences of the pandemic were more pronounced for residents living in the eastern region and regions with a high old-age dependency ratio and low illiteracy rate. Furthermore, the estimation results of the quantile regression model for panel data suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic had relatively larger impacts on the dietary consumption of Chinese residents at lower quantiles of food consumption compared with those at higher quantiles. Overall, the results of this study suggested that Chinese residents had a healthier diet after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. We discussed possible mechanisms, including health awareness, income, food supply and prices, and other behavioral changes during COVID-19 (e.g., physical activity and cooking). To further improve residents' dietary behaviors and health, our study proposed relevant measures, such as increasing residents' dietary knowledge, ensuring employment and income, and strengthening the food supply chain resilience during the pandemic.

Protein disulfide isomerase family A member 3 (PDIA3) is a multifunctional protein, and it plays a vital role in modulating various cell biological functions under physiological and pathological conditions. Our previous study on Mediterranean buffalo demonstrated that PDIA3 is a potential candidate gene associated with milk yield based on genome-wide association study analysis. However, the genetic effects of the PDIA3 gene on milk performance in dairy cattle and the corresponding mechanism have not been documented. This study aims to explore the genetic effects of PDIA3 polymorphisms on milk production traits in 362 Chinese Holstein cattle. The results showed that 4 SNPs were identified from the 5' untranslated region of the PDIA3 gene in the studied population, of which 2 SNPs (g.-1713 C>T and g.-934 G>A) were confirmed to be significantly associated with milk protein percentage, whereas g.-434 C>T was significantly associated with milk fat percentage. Notably, linkage disequilibrium analysis indicated that 3 SNPs (g.-1713 C>T, g.-934 G>A, and g.-695 A>C) formed one haplotype block, which was found to be significantly associated with milk protein percentage. The luciferase assay demonstrated that allele C of g.-434 C>T exhibited a higher promotor activity compared with allele T, suggesting that g.-434 C>T might be a potential functional mutation affecting PDIA3 expression. Furthermore, overexpression of the PDIA3 gene was found to induce higher levels of triglyceride and BODIPY fluorescence intensity. In addition, PDIA3 overexpression was also found to positively regulate the synthesis and secretion of α-casein, β-casein, and κ-casein, whereas knockdown of this gene showed the opposite effects. In summary, our findings revealed significant genetic effects of PDIA3 on milk composition traits, and the identified SNP and the haplotype block might be used as genetic markers for dairy cow selected breeding., (© 2022, The Authors. Astroviruses are a non-enveloped virus with large host range breadth. AstV-associated gastroenteritis in human and animal, nephritis in chicken, gout in gosling and hepatitis in duckling pose great threats to public health and poultry industry. Since early 2020, continuous emergence of fatal goose astrovirus (GAstV) infections characterized by articular and visceral gout was reported in China. Here, we described two outbreaks of emerging gout disease in two different goose farms of central China. Two virulent GAstV strains, designated as HNKF-1/China/2020 and HNSQ-6/China/2020, were isolated, and the fifth passage of the isolates could cause urate crystals accumulated in the allantoic fluid and even deposited around great vessels and embryo bodies. Meanwhile, the source of these GAstV outbreaks was tracked to goose hatcheries. The prevalence of GAstV in the goose embryos with hatch failure was confirmed, and embryo-origin HNXX-6/China/2020 was further isolated. The complete genome of these three newly isolates was then sequenced and analysed. The results showed that Chinese GAstVs have formed two distinct groups, and the three GAstV isolates, as well as most of the Chinese GAstVs, belong to the G-I group. There are several amino acid mutations in the three newly identified GAstVs, such as A520T, S535R, V555I and A782T in ORF1a and Q229P in ORF2, suggesting the field stains, HNKF-1/China/2020 and HNSQ-6/China/2020, might derive from the weak goose embryo via vertical transmission. Moreover, the phylogenetic analysis of the complete viral genome and individual viral proteins revealed that Chinese GAstV strains have been constantly evolving towards more complicated and various directions. Objectives: We analyzed the clinical features and outcomes of children with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis in Northwestern China., Methods: We retrospectively recruited 33 pediatric patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis in Northwestern China from December 2013 to April 2020. The demographics, clinical features, treatments, and outcomes were reviewed., Results: 33 patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis were enrolled in this study (a median age of 6.8 years, 20 females and 13 males). The initial symptoms included seizures (42.4%), psychiatric symptoms (39.4%), speech dysfunction (12.1%), and paralysis (6.1%). During the course of the disease, 31 patients (93.9%) presented with psychiatric symptoms, 29 patients (87.9%) presented with speech dysfunction, 25 patients (75.8%) presented with movement disorders and 24 patients (72.7%) presented with sleep disorders followed by seizures, consciousness disturbance, autonomic nervous dysfunction, paralysis, and hypoventilation. 12 patients (36.4%) had abnormal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings, 10 patients (30.3%) exhibited abnormal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results, and 29 patients (87.9%) showed abnormal Electroencephalography (EEG) findings. None of the patients had tumors. All patients received first-line immunotherapy and 8 patients both received first and second-line immunotherapy. 30 of the 33 patients achieved good outcomes (score on the modified Rankin Scale [mRS] of 0-2), whilst the other 3 patients had poor outcomes (mRS score of 3-6)., Conclusions: Patients with higher CSF anti-NMDAR body titer were more likely to develop sleep disorders, consciousness disturbances and more severe disease states.

Two strains designated as c1 T and c7 T , were isolated from the landfill leachate of a domestic waste treatment plant in Huizhou City, Guangdong Province, PR China. The cells of both strains were aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile and formed yellow colonies on Reasoner's 2A agar plates. Strain c1 T grew at 10-42 °C (optimum, 30 °C), pH 4.5-10.5 (optimum, pH 7.0) and 0-2.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0-0.5 %). Strain c7 T grew at 10-42 °C (optimum, 30 °C), pH 4.5-10.5 (optimum, pH 6.0) and 0-2.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0-0.5 %). Phylogenetic analyses revealed that strains c1 T and c7 T belong to the genus Novosphingobium . The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of strains c1 T and c7 T to the type strains of Novosphingobium species were 94.5-98.2 % and 94.3-99.1 %, respectively. The calculated pairwise average nucleotide identity values among strains c1 T , c7 T and the reference strains were in the range of 75.2-85.9 % and the calculated pairwise average amino acid identity values among strains c1 T , c7 T and reference strains were in the range of 72.0-88.3 %. Their major respiratory quinone was Q-10, and the major cellular fatty acids were C 18 : 1  ω 7 c , C 18 : 0 , C 16 : 1  ω 7 c , C 16 : 0 and C 14 : 0 2OH. The major polar lipids of strains c1 T and c7 T were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, sphingoglycolipid, unidentified lipids and unidentified phospholipid. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic results from this study, strains c1 T and c7 T should represent two independent novel species of Novosphingobium , for which the names Novosphingobium percolationis sp. nov. (type strain c1 T =GDMCC 1.2555 T =KCTC 82826 T ) and Novosphingobium huizhouense sp. nov. (type strain c7 T =GDMCC 1.2556 T =KCTC 82827 T ) are proposed. The gene function annotation results of strains c1 T and c7 T suggest that they could play an important role in the degradation of organic pollutants.

SignificanceOwls, with their largely nocturnal habits, contrast strikingly with the vast majority of diurnal birds. A new spectacular late Miocene owl skeleton from China unexpectedly preserves the oldest evidence for daytime behavior in owls. The extinct owl is a member of the clade Surniini, which contains most living diurnal owl species. Analysis of the preserved eye bones documents them as consistent with diurnal birds, and phylogenetically constrained character mapping coincides with a reconstruction of an early evolutionary reversal away from nocturnal habits in this owl group. These results support a potential Miocene origin of nonnocturnal habits in a globally distributed owl group, which may be linked to steppe habitat expansion and climatic cooling in the late Miocene.

The conventional Ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF), which is now widely used to calibrate emission inventories and to improve air quality simulations, is susceptible to simulation errors of meteorological inputs, making accurate updates of high temporal-resolution emission inventories challenging. In this study, we developed a novel meteorologically adjusted inversion method (MAEInv) based on the EnKF to improve daily emission estimations. The new method combines sensitivity analysis and bias correction to alleviate the inversion biases caused by errors of meteorological inputs. For demonstration, we used the MAEInv to inverse daily carbon monoxide (CO) emissions in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. In the case study, 60% of the total CO simulation biases were associated with sensitive meteorological inputs, which would lead to the overestimation of daily variations of posterior emissions. Using the new inversion method, daily variations of emissions shrank dramatically, with the percentage change decreased by 30%. Also, the total amount of posterior CO emissions estimated by the MAEInv decreased by 14%, indicating that posterior CO emissions might be overestimated using the conventional EnKF. Model evaluations using independent observations revealed that daily CO emissions estimated by MAEInv better reproduce the magnitude and temporal patterns of ambient CO concentration, with a higher correlation coefficient (R, +37.0%) and lower normalized mean bias (NMB, -17.9%). Since errors of meteorological inputs are major sources of simulation biases for both low-reactive and reactive pollutants, the MAEInv is also applicable to improve the daily emission inversions of reactive pollutants., (Copyright © 2021. Here, we report well-preserved skulls and postcranial specimens of genus Hippotherium from the Linxia Basin, Gansu, China. Based on morphological comparison, the species of Hippotherium in China, Hippotherium weihoense and Hippotherium chiai, should be ascribed to the same species, H. weihoense. We also reviewe other Old World hipparion species in the very early Late Miocene and figure out two evolutionary routes: the Hippotherium and Cormohipparion lineages. Analysis of locomotive ability indicates that H. weihoense likely lived in an open habitat, whereas other species of Hippotherium likely lived in closed habitats. This result shows a palaeoecological pattern in the early Late Miocene in Eurasia influenced by a series of geological events as aridification of mid-latitude Asia progressed, whereas Europe and North Africa remained relatively humid. To explore a new marker which can detect bacterial vaginosis (BV) with high sensitivity and specificity quantitatively. According to the Nugent Score, vaginal secretions from study participants were divided into BV, healthy, and BV-intermediate groups. First, we compared the obvious differences and high abundance of bacteria in the three groups using 16S rRNA-sequencing, and screened out candidate markers. Then, quantitative detection of these candidate markers from the three groups was done using real-time reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), followed by evaluation of the sensitivity and specificity. Finally, we verified the new markers using clinical cases. Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, Lactobacillus, Megasphaera were screened out by 16S rRNA-sequencing. RT-qPCR data were transformed and analyzed through ROC curves. PCR results for these bacteria were log-transformed using Lactobacillus crispatus as the numerator and other BV-related bacteria as the denominator. Four new indicators were found. Of these, log L. crispatus / G. vaginalis (L/G) <0 was the best indicator. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of our system were 93.5%, 97.2%, 96.6 and 94.6%, respectively. Combination of data for 16S rRNA-sequencing and RT-qPCR revealed four indicators for BV detection. Of these, log L/G < 0 was the best indicator. Creating a molecular-diagnostic system independent of the Nugent Score for BV could have an important impact on the clinical management of BV. Identification of selection signature is important for a better understanding of genetic mechanisms that affect phenotypic differentiation in livestock. However, the genome-wide selection responses have not been investigated for the production traits of Chinese crossbred buffaloes. In this study, an SNP data set of 133 buffaloes (Chinese crossbred buffalo, n = 45; Chinese local swamp buffalo, n = 88) was collected from the Dryad Digital Repository database (https://datadryad.org/stash/). Population genetics analysis showed that these buffaloes were divided into the following 2 groups: crossbred buffalo and swamp buffalo. The crossbred group had higher genetic diversity than the swamp group. Using 3 complementary statistical methods (integrated haplotype score, cross population extended haplotype homozygosity, and composite likelihood ratio), a total of 31 candidate selection regions were identified in the Chinese crossbred population. Here, within these candidate regions, 25 genes were under the putative selection. Among them, several candidate genes were reported to be associated with production traits. In addition, we identified 13 selection regions that overlapped with bovine QTLs that were mainly involved in milk production and composition traits. These results can provide useful insights regarding the selection response for production traits of Chinese crossbred buffalo, as identified candidate genes influence production performance., (The Authors. Existing studies on vertical profiling of black carbon (BC) and ozone (O 3 ) were mainly conducted in the rural areas, leading to limited knowledge of their vertical distributions in the urban area. To fill this knowledge gap, vertical profiling (0-500 m and 0-900 m, AGL) of BC and O 3 was conducted in a highly urbanized area of Shenzhen in subtropical South China using a multicopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform. In total 32 flights were conducted from the 10th to 15th, December 2017 (winter campaign) and 42 flights from the 19th to 28th, August 2018 (summer campaign) with 4 time slots per day, including morning, afternoon, evening, and midnight. In general, equivalent BC (eBC) concentration decreased as the height increased with an overall slope of -0.13 μg m -3 per 100 m in the winter campaign and -0.08 μg m -3 per 100 m in the summer campaign. On the contrary, an increase of O 3 level with altitude was observed (7.8 ppb per 100 m). Absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) exhibits a slightly increasing trend with height. Seasonality of eBC vertical profiles was observed in morning, afternoon and midnight flights, but not for evening flights. The analysis showed the shape of vertical profiles of eBC and O 3 can be affected by planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) and air mass origin. In late September 2019, the longest and most extensive ozone (O 3 ) pollution process occurred at Pearl River Delta. Base on the observational data, surface-level O 3 , vertical distribution characteristics boundary layer O 3 as well as its effect on surface-level O 3 are thoroughly analyzed. The O 3 lidar results showed similar vertical O 3 profiles both in pollution episodes and clean periods, from which a high O 3 concentration layer between 300 and 500 m and a sub-high O 3 concentration layer between 1300 and 1700 m (near the top of the mixing layer) can be found. Besides, the downward O 3 transport paths from the high/sub-high O 3 concentration layers could be observed along with the boundary layer evolution: At nighttime, large amounts of O 3 were effectively stored into the residual layer (RL). Due to the upward development of Mixing layer (ML) in early morning, atmospheric vertical mixing carried the O 3 inside the RL down to the surface, which led to a rapid increase in the surface-level O 3 . The sub-high O 3 layer began the downward mixing at noon, and became well-mixed after the boundary layer was fully developed in the afternoon, by which the near surface O 3 pollution deteriorated again. Further analysis of the heavy O 3 pollution episodes show that, the high O 3 concentration inside the RL contributed 54% ± 6% of the surface-level O 3 at 9:00 LT and the average contribution of O 3 in the sub-high concentration layer to the surface-level O 3 at 14:00 LT was 26% ± 9%. Twelve Gram-stain-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, rod-shaped and motile strains (CY7W T , CY18W T , CY22W T , FT31W T , FT137W T , FT147W T , BYS50W, BYS107W T , LFS511W T , LX15W T , LX22W T and NL8W T ) were isolated from streams in China. Comparisons based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these strains take species of genus Undibacterium as close neighbours. The reconstructed phylogenetic and phylogenomic trees also showed that these strains cluster with species of genus Undibacterium together. The genome G+C contents of these strains were in the range of 45.3 to 53.3 mol%. The calculated pairwise OrthoANIu values and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values among these strains and related strains were in the range of 70.4 to 94.1% and 19.3 to 55.3% except that the values between strains CY7W T and BYS50W were 99.0 and 91.8 %, respectively. Q-8 was their predominant respiratory quinone. C 16 : 1  ω7 c and C 16 : 0 were their major fatty acids. Their polar lipids profiles were similar, including phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified phospholipid and two kinds of unidentified aminolipids. Combining polyphasic taxonomic characteristics and phylogenetic relationships, twelve strains should represent eleven independent novel species of genus Undibacterium , for which the names Undibacterium baiyunense sp. nov. (type strain BYS107W T =GDMCC 1.2453 T =KCTC 82653 T ), Undibacterium curvum sp. nov. (type strain CY22W T =GDMCC 1.1906 T =KACC 21951 T ), Undibacterium fentianense sp. nov. (type strain FT137W T =GDMCC 1.2456 T =KCTC 82656 T ), Undibacterium flavidum sp. nov. (type strain LX15W T =GDMCC 1.1910 T =JCM 34286 T ), Undibacterium griseum sp. nov. (type strain FT31W T =GDMCC 1.1908 T =KACC 21953 T ), Undibacterium hunanense sp. nov. (type strain CY18W T =GDMCC 1.1904 T =KACC 21949 T ), Undibacterium luofuense sp. nov. Background: By implementing aggressive control measures, China has rapidly and effectively controlled the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. However, the neglected homeless population may become victims of that perceived success. Due to political sensitivity, we know little about them. Aims: This study aimed to investigate how the pandemic and the pandemic control strategies of the government affected the lives of the homeless people in mainland China. Methods: A total of 103 eligible participants experiencing absolute homelessness were recruited from Guangzhou City during July and August 2020. Surveys measured demographic characteristics including health status, changes in daily living, and actions of the government toward the homeless during the pandemic. Sankey diagrams and ordered logit regression models were used to examine the impact on the homeless of inhumane government efforts to drive the homeless away. Qualitative materials were analyzed by using an inductive approach to provide more details. Results: First, the homeless people in Guangzhou tended to be male, aged 40 to 64 years, less well-educated, and they originated from outside Guangdong although they were living in the city center. Most had little connection with their families. After a long period of homelessness, almost half of the participants were in poor health with various conditions, which made them extremely vulnerable to COVID-19. Second, the pandemic caused a substantial decline in incomes of homeless people, had less of a negative impact on their food intake, and affected sleep time in different ways. Third, during the COVID-19 pandemic, humanitarian aid from local governments of China decreased, whereas inhumane efforts to drive the homeless away intensified. Fourth, quantitative models and qualitative materials demonstrate the devastating effect of the strict pandemic control strategy of the government on the lives of homeless people, which may further cause their health problems. Conclusion: This study for the first time illustrated the characteristic features of the street homeless population in mainland China and their living situation during the COVID-19 pandemic, and most importantly demonstrated the devastating effect of the strict pandemic control of the government, which has been considered a great success in previous studies, on lives of homeless people. The coiled-coil domain containing protein members have been well documented for their roles in many diseases including cancers. However, the function of the coiled-coil domain containing 65 (CCDC65) remains unknown in tumorigenesis including gastric cancer. Methods: CCDC65 expression and its correlation with clinical features and prognosis of gastric cancer were analyzed in tissue. The biological role and molecular basis of CCDC65 were performed via in vitro and in vivo assays and a various of experimental methods including co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP), GST-pull down and ubiquitination analysis et al. Finally, whether metformin affects the pathogenesis of gastric cancer by regulating CCDC65 and its-mediated signaling was investigated. Results : Here, we found that downregulated CCDC65 level was showed as an unfavourable factor in gastric cancer patients. Subsequently, CCDC65 or its domain (a.a. 130-484) was identified as a significant suppressor in GC growth and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. Molecular basis showed that CCDC65 bound to ENO1, an oncogenic factor has been widely reported to promote the tumor pathogenesis, by its domain (a.a. 130-484) and further promoted ubiquitylation and degradation of ENO1 by recruiting E3 ubiquitin ligase FBXW7. The downregulated ENO1 decreased the binding with AKT1 and further inactivated AKT1, which led to the loss of cell proliferation and EMT signal. Finally, we observed that metformin, a new anti-cancer drug, can significantly induce CCDC65 to suppress ENO1-AKT1 complex-mediated cell proliferation and EMT signals and finally suppresses the malignant phenotypes of gastric cancer cells. Conclusion: These results firstly highlight a critical role of CCDC65 in suppressing ENO1-AKT1 pathway to reduce the progression of gastric cancer and reveals a new molecular mechanism for metformin in suppressing gastric cancer. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive factors of central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) and BRAF V600E mutation in Chinese patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC)., Methods: A total of 943 PTC patients who underwent thyroidectomy from 2014 to 2016 at our hospital were enrolled. Those patients were divided into PTC > 10 mm and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) groups by tumor size. The BRAF V600E mutation was examined by quantitative real-time PCR. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine risk factors associated with CLNM and the BRAF V600E mutation., Results: The frequency of CLNM was 53% (505/943). Both univariate and multivariate analyses suggested that the risk factors for CLNM in PTC patients were male, younger age, and larger tumor size (P < 0.05). Coexistent Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) was an independent protective factor against CLNM when the tumor was > 10 mm (P = 0.006). Stratified analysis revealed that male, age ≤ 30 years, and tumor size > 5 mm were independent risk factors for CLNM. The BRAF V600E mutation rate was 85%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age (P < 0.001) and coexistent HT (P = 0.005) were independent predictive factors of BRAF V600E mutation in PTC patients. Only age was a risk factor for the BRAF V600E mutation when the tumor was > 10 mm (P = 0.004). In the PTMC group, the BRAF V600E mutation was significantly correlated with tumor size (P < 0.001) and coexistent HT (P = 0.03). Stratified analysis revealed that age > 30 years and tumor size > 5 mm were independent predictive factors of BRAF V600E mutation. Furthermore, the incidence of CLNM was significantly higher in BRAF V600E mutation-positive patients (P = 0.009) when the tumor was ≤ 5 mm., Conclusion: The factors male, younger age (≤ 30 years), large tumor size (> 5 mm), and coexistent HT are independent predicative factors for CLNM. The BRAF V600E mutation is associated with both large size and without HT in PTMC patients, age > 30 years in the PTC > 10 mm group. The BRAF V600E mutation was an independent risk factor for CLNM when the tumor was ≤ 5 mm. Two Gram-stain-negative, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, rod-shaped, non-flagellated, non-spore-forming and non-motile strains (YJ13C T and H41 T ) were isolated from a mariculture fishpond in PR China. Comparisons based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that YJ13C T and H41 T shared 16S rRNA gene sequences similarities between 92.6 and 99.2 % with species of the genus Algoriphagus . YJ13C T only shared 93.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with H41 T . The reconstructed phylogenetic and phylogenomic trees indicated that YJ13C T and H41 T clustered closely with species of the genus Algoriphagus . The calculated pairwise orthologous average nucleotide identity with usearch (OrthoANIu) values between strains YJ13C T and H41 T and other related strains were all less than 79.5 %. The OrthoANIu value between YJ13C T and H41 T was only 69.9 %. MK-7 was the predominant respiratory quinone of YJ13C T and H41 T and their major cellular fatty acids contained iso-C 15 : 0 , C 16 : 1 ω7 c and C 17 : 1 ω9 c . The polar lipids profiles of YJ13C T and H41 T consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine and several kinds of unidentified lipids. Combining the above descriptions, strains YJ13C T and H41 T represent two distinct novel species of the genus Algoriphagus , for which the names Algoriphagus pacificus sp. nov. (type strain YJ13C T =GDMCC 1.2178 T =KCTC 82450 T ) and Algoriphagus oliviformis sp. nov. (type strain H41 T =GDMCC 1.2179 T =KCTC 82451 T ) are proposed.

As one of the largest land mammals, the origin and evolution of the giant rhino Paraceratherium bugtiense in Pakistan have been unclear. We report a new species Paraceratherium linxiaense sp. nov. from northwestern China with an age of 26.5 Ma. Morphology and phylogeny reveal that P. linxiaense is the highly derived species of the genus Paraceratherium, and its clade with P. lepidum has a tight relationship to P. bugtiense. Based on the paleogeographical literature, P. bugtiense represents a range expansion of Paraceratherium from Central Asia via the Tibetan region. By the late Oligocene, P. lepidum and P. linxiaense were found in the north side of the Tibetan Plateau. The Tibetan region likely hosted some areas with low elevation, possibly under 2000 m during Oligocene, and the lineage of giant rhinos could have dispersed freely along the eastern coast of the Tethys Ocean and perhaps through some lowlands of this region.

Background & Aim: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the life and work of people worldwide. The present study aimed to evaluate the rhythm disruptions of life, work, and entertainment, and their associations with the psychological impacts during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic., Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted from the 10th to 17th March 2020 in China. A structured e-questionnaire containing general information, the Chinese version of Brief Social Rhythm Scale, and Zung's self-rating scales of depression and anxiety (SDS and SAS) was posted and collected online through a public media (i.e. EQxiu online questionnaire platform). Scores in sleeping, getting up, and socializing (SGS) rhythm and eating, physical practice, and entertainment (EPE) rhythm were compared among and between participants with different sociodemographic backgrounds including gender, age, education, current occupation, annual income, health status, and chronic disease status. Correlations of SDS and SAS with SGS-scale and EPE-scale were also analyzed., Results: Overall, 5854 participants were included. There were significant differences in the scores of SGS-scale and EPE-scale among people with different sociodemographic backgrounds. The scores were significantly higher in the groups with female gender, low education level, lower or higher than average income, poor health status, ages of 26-30 years or older than 61 years, nurses and subjects with divorce or widow status. There were also significant differences in SAS and SDS scores among people with different sociodemographic backgrounds (all P< 0.05). The overall prevalence of depression and anxiety was 24.3% and 12.6%, respectively, with nurses having the highest rates of depression (32.94%) and anxiety (18.98%) among the different occupational groups. SGS-scale was moderately correlated with SDS and SAS, and disruption of SGS rhythm was an independent risk factor for depression and anxiety., Conclusion: Social rhythm disruption was independently associated with depression and anxiety. Despite the large reduction in anthropogenic activities due to the outbreak of COVID-19, air quality in China has witnessed little improvement and featured great regional disparities. Here, by combining observational data and simulations, this work aims to understand the diverse air quality response in two city clusters, Yangtze River Delta region (YRD) and Pearl River Delta region (PRD), China. Though there was a noticeable drop in primary pollutants in both the regions, differently, the maximum daily 8 h average ozone (O 3 ) soared by 20.6-76.8% in YRD but decreased by 15.5-28.1% in PRD. In YRD, nitrogen oxide (NOx) reductions enhanced O 3 accumulation and hence increased secondary aerosol formation. Such an increment in secondary organic and inorganic aerosols under stationary weather reached up to 36.4 and 10.2%, respectively, which was further intensified by regional transport. PRD was quite the opposite. The emission reductions benefited PRD air quality, while regional transport corresponded to an increase of 17.3 and 9.3% in secondary organic and inorganic aerosols, respectively. Apart from meteorology, the discrepancy in O 3 -VOCs-NOx relationships determined the different O 3 responses, indicating that future emission control shall be regionally specific, instead of one-size-fits-all cut. Overall, the importance of regionally coordinated and balanced control strategy for multiple pollutants is highly emphasized.

The air purification potential of plants has been widely studied and recognized. However, their specific capacities in retaining water-soluble (WSPM) and water-insoluble (WIPM) atmospheric particulate matter (PM) are still unclear. In order to recommend tree species with high air phytoremediation ability, the retention characteristics for WSPM and WIPM of five tree species under different haze pollution levels and PM retention durations in Beijing were evaluated after introducing ultrasonic cleaning procedure to the conventional leaf cleaning methods. The daily PM amount retained these species in the six central districts in Beijing (SCBD) was roughly estimated based on the field tree survey data in 171 plots randomly distributed within the Fifth Ring Road. The updated leaf cleaning method improved the evaluation accuracy for WSPM and WIPM by 54% and 31%, respectively. The particles retained by the broadleaf and coniferous species were mainly composed of WSPM (71%) and WIPM (64%), respectively. The diameter distribution of PM varied markedly with species, PM retention duration, and pollution level. However, it always showed a unimodal pattern for WSPM and no uniform patterns for WIPM. The average relative capacities of different species in retaining WSPM of TSP (PM ≤ 100 μm) were more stable with time, and the corresponding rank was Sophora japonica > Salix babylonica > Ginkgo biloba > Pinus tabuliformis > Sabina chinensis. Whereas, as to the WIPM of TSP, their order changed to S. japonica > P. tabuliformis > S. babylonica > G. biloba > S. chinensis. During the study period, the TPM (WIPM+WSPM) of TSP retained by these species per day in the SCBD reached 132.6 t (76.1 t WSPM + 56.5 t WIPM), accounting for a considerable proportion of the daily dust-fall amount. To understand the characteristics and potential impacts of fungal aerosols in waste disposal treatments, we performed observations at a landfill and an incineration plants in Guangzhou, Southern China. Size-segregated airborne fungal concentrations were measured based on culture-dependent method, and fungal compositions in PM 2.5 were obtained using high-throughput sequencing method. Concentrations of airborne fungi varied from 376 to 9318 CFU/m 3 in the landfill plant and from 53 to 8491 CFU/m 3 in the incineration plant, respectively. The temporal and spatial variations of fungal aerosols indicate that waste disposal operation, garbage transport, air mixing, and meteorological factors can significantly influence the variations of airborne fungi in the outdoor environment in both plants. Among the meteorological factors, light/moderate rain could significantly increase the airborne fungal concentrations while heavy rain could decrease the concentrations due to wet scavenge. We observed that culturable fungal aerosols predominantly resided in the size range of 2.1-3.3 μm. Different fungal community structures in PM 2.5 were found between the landfill and the incineration plants, suggesting the influence of different waste sorts and treatment procedures. We further identified the pathogenic/allergenic fungal taxa (e.g., Alternaria, Epicoccum sp. and Stachybotrys sp.) in the two plants, implying the potential human health risks with long-term exposure for on-site workers and surrounding residents. The fungal genera producing microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs, e.g., Cladosporium, Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp. and Candida) were found in both plants. Background: As the incidence of secretory osteoporosis has increased, bone loss, osteoporosis and their relationships with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) have received increased attention. In this study, the role of TSH in bone metabolism and its possible underlying mechanisms were investigated., Methods: We analyzed the serum levels of free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), and TSH and the bone mineral density (BMD) levels of 114 men with normal thyroid function. In addition, osteoblasts from rat calvarial samples were treated with different doses of TSH for different lengths of time. The related gene and protein expression levels were investigated., Results: A comparison of the BMD between the high-level and low-level serum TSH groups showed that the TSH serum concentration was positively correlated with BMD. TSH at concentrations of 10 mU/mL and 100 mU/mL significantly increased the mRNA levels of ALP, COI1 and Runx2 compared with those of the control (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)2 activity was enhanced with both increased TSH concentration and increased time. The protein levels of Runx2 and osterix were increased in a dose-dependent manner., Conclusions: The circulating concentrations of TSH and BMD were positively correlated with normal thyroid function in males. TSH promoted osteoblast proliferation and differentiation in rat primary osteoblasts.

Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has resulted in serious concerns in China and abroad. To investigate clinical features of confirmed and suspected patients with COVID-19 in west China, and to examine differences between severe versus non-severe patients., Methods: Patients admitted for COVID-19 between January 21 and February 11 from fifteen hospitals in Sichuan Province, China were included. Experienced clinicians trained with methods abstracted data from medical records using pre-defined, pilot-tested forms. Clinical characteristics between severe and non-severe patients were compared., Results: Of the 169 patients included, 147 were laboratory-confirmed, 22 were suspected. For confirmed cases, the most common symptoms from onset to admission were cough (70·7%), fever (70·5%) and sputum (33·3%), and the most common chest CT patterns were patchy or stripes shadowing (78·0%); throughout the course of disease, 19·0% had no fever, and 12·4% had no radiologic abnormality; twelve (8·2%) received mechanical ventilation, four (2·7%) were transferred to ICU, and no death occurred. Compared to non-severe cases, severe ones were more likely to have underlying comorbidities (62·5% vs 26·2%, P = 0·001), to present with cough (92·0% vs 66·4%, P = 0·02), sputum (60·0% vs 27·9%, P = 0·004) and shortness of breath (40·0% vs 8·2%, P <  0·0001), and to have more frequent lymphopenia (79·2% vs 43·7%, P = 0·003) and eosinopenia (84·2% vs 57·0%, P = 0·046)., Conclusions: The symptoms of patients in west China were relatively mild, and an appreciable proportion of infected cases had no fever, warranting special attention.
