Excessive doses of paracetamol have the potential to cause acute kidney injury and even death. Gynura procumbens has been traditionally used as folk-medicine for kidney disease. This study aimed to examine the nephroprotective effect of Gynura procumbens leaf extract against paracetamol-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Twenty-five male wistar rats (150-200 g) were divided into 5 groups. Healthy control group, placebo group, and 3 extract treatment groups that received either 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg or 300 mg/kg dose. The placebo (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) or extract was given 4 consecutive days prior to paracetamol (2400 mg/kg) administration on day 5. Blood samples were withdrawn before treatment initiated (day 0), after treatment before paracetamol administration (day 5) and 24-hour after paracetamol administration (day 6). Blood samples were analyzed to obtain urea and creatinine levels. In addition, histopathological analysis was performed on the renal tissue. Paracetamol administration was shown to significantly increase the urea and creatinine levels, and the extract at 300 mg/kg dose was able to significantly prevent the elevation of the renal biomarkers. The histopathological analysis also revealed a significant reduction in renal histopathological injury in 300 mg/kg extract group. It can be concluded that the ethanolic extract of the Gynura procumbens at a dose of 300 mg/kg has a good protective effect on kidney function and tissue structure. Hypertension is closely related to vasodilation disorders because of the decreased availability of nitrogen monoxide (NO). The purpose of this study was to determine the decrease in blood pressure and nitrogen monoxide (NO) levels in rats after administration of Gynura procumbens leaves extract. Gynura procumbens is one of the most common medicinal plants with extensive pharmacological properties. Light intensity and nitrogenous fertilisers are two main limiting factors in primary and secondary metabolism in plants. Information on the effects of shade levels and nitrogenous fertiliser rates on phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of G. procumbens is much scarce. This justifies an in-depth study to determine the effects of phytochemical content and antioxidant activity. This study was conducted with four levels of shade (0, 30, 50, and 70%) and four nitrogen fertilizer rates (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg N ha-1). Data measurements were performed on protein content, C:N ratio, total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant activity (DPPH, FRAP) and flavonoid acids. The results showed that decreases in total phenol, flavonoid contents, C:N ratio and antioxidant activity were recorded with increasing shade levels and nitrogen rates. Protein content was increased with increases in shade levels and nitrogen fertilizer supplement. The highest flavonoid acids contents were observed from higher light intensity (no shade) and no nitrogen application. Enhancement in production of secondary metabolites and antioxidant activity were associated with high C:N ratio and low protein contents. The study demonstrated that high light intensity (0% shade) with a low N fertilizer rate (0 kg N ha−1) was suitable for both phenolic compounds and antioxidants activity. The present study suggested that G. procumbens can achieve higher production of polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity under low nitrogen availability and open field conditions

Plants are important source of traditional medicine that can be used to aid many type of illness. Gynura procumbens is one of the plants that are often used by Indonesian people as traditional medicine. Gynura procumbens exhibits antibacterial, anticancer, anti-hyperglycemic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardioprotective, fertility enhancement, organ protective activity. This review aims to provide an overview on the relatedness of the identified bioactive compounds with the reported biological activities of Gynura procumbens leave and on the herbal therapy with leave of Gynura procumbens. Literature search is carried out with the help of two searching engines: PubMed and Science Direct. The searching was carried out with keyword: Gynura procumbens. From PubMed and Science Direct, 42 and 94 results were obtained respectively. There were 45 full text articles that meet systematic review criteria. The relevant information is compiled to illustrate that leave of Gynura procumbens is a potential natural source of compounds with various pharmacological actions. Polar, semi and nonpolar solvent can be used to extract the bioactive compounds from the leave of Gynura procumbens. The identified bioactive compounds belong to phenolic, flavonoid, coumaric acids, essential oils, carbohydrates and proteins. Most of the extracts show potent antioxidative activity. The bioactivities of the leave extract are associated with many diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, obesity, etc. The herbal therapy with leave of Gynura procumbens can be appropriately applied in oral administration and topical application. PurposeTraditional Malaysian vegetables, also known as ulam, are believed to have healing properties among the local community. Ulam is commonly reported to have high antioxidant content which makes it a popular food. The purpose of this paper is to determine the teratogenic potential of eight ulam, using zebrafish model. The tested ulam were Cosmos caudatus, Gynura procumbens, Labisia pumila var. alata, Phaleria macrocarpa, Polygonum minus, Piper sarmentosum, Premna foetida and Sauropus androgynous.Design/methodology/approachMethanol extract of ulam was prepared using the maceration method. Various concentrations of extracts were tested against fish embryo short-term toxicity test. The lethal concentration (LC50) and teratogenic effect of the ulam were determined.FindingsAmong all tested species, L. pumila, P. foetida and S. androgynous showed 100% lethal effect towards zebrafish embryos at concentrations of 10 µg/mL, 1,000 µg/mL and 100 µg/mL, respectively. The three ulam have exhibited teratogenic effect on zebrafish embryos after 72 h post-fertilization. L. pumila had induced yolk sac edema at 1.0 µg/mL for normalized measurement of 108.3 ± 2.0% (which is higher than negative control, p P. foetida had induced pericardial edema at 100 µg/mL for normalized measurement of 124.0 ± 4.6% (which is higher than negative control, p S. androgynus induced curve trunk at 30 µg/mL for the presence of 70.9 ± 4.2%.Originality/valueThe teratogenic effect of L. pumila, P. foetida and S. androgynous suggests the possible disruption in the embryogenesis in zebrafish, namely Notch, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and retinoic acid pathways. The results of ulam gave possible implications and insights on the cancer pathways involved, which could be a useful target for cancer research. This is the first report on teratogenicity evaluation of Malaysian ulam showing relationship to cancer pathways by using zebrafish embryo model.

The emergent medicinal plant Gynura procumbens to the greatest extent familiar in Bangladesh, India, Thailand and Southeast Asia. The plant usually used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of various diseases along with diabetes mellitus. The present investigation was try to display screen qualitative and quantitative phytochemical compositions of ethanol extract of Gynura procumbens leaves as an instance soluble sugar, total amino acids, protein, chlorophyll, flavonoids, tannins, phenol as standard techniques and antioxidant activity as DPPH radical scavenging assay and compare the antibacterial activity by using agar well diffusion method. Qualitative evaluation exhibit present of most of the phytochemicals and quantitative evaluation revealed primary chemical constituents consisting of amino acids (16.34 mg/g), soluble sugar (1.81 mg/g), total chlorophyll (0.52 mg/g), chlorophyll-a (0.34 mg/g), chlorophyll-b (0.145 mg/g) and lowest amount of phytochemical turned into protein (0.12 mg/g). Secondary chemical constituents together with flavonoids (30.32 mg/g), phenols (10.17 mg/g) and tannin (0.96 mg/g). The observation also confirmed great antioxidant activity in a concentration dependent manner via the scavenging of 1, 1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). Result confirmed that, the studied sample has high antioxidant efficacy. The antibacterial interest confirmed as negative effects in all bacteria’s tested. Background: Development of medical plants as an alternative treatment needs support in terms of scientific evidence to increase public confidence to ensure the safety of its use. Recent research on Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f) Ness and Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr showed that the combination of these extracts has a potential to be developed into antihyperglycemic agent and there’s no any potential toxicity for each extract. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity level of these two extracts combination. From this research, it is expected that information can be obtained regarding the safety of extracts to support the further development of the extract combination. Method : The method that used in this research is based on OECD 423. Observation was intensively done to animal behavior 4 h after acute exposure and continued up to 14 days after acute exposure to evaluate whether there were animal died. After the 15 days, all the animals were sacrificed and the vital organ was isolated for histological study. Results: The results showed that the exposure of these combination didn’t caused any to toxicity symptoms and there’s no animals died. Histological study on hepar showed that there’s no mayor damage in the hepar even after exposure of 2000 mg/kgBW dose. Conclusion: The combination of ethanol extract of A. paniculata herbs and G. procumbens leaves was categorized as unclassified (>2000 mg/kgBW) in term of toxicity levels based on Globally Harmonized Classification System . Metode: Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini mengacu pada panduan OECD 423. Pengamatan yang dilakukan termasuk pada tingkah laku hewan uji tikus betina galur Wistar berjumlah 15 ekor, secara intensif terhadap gejala toksisitas selama 4 jam awal setelah paparan sediaan uji kemudian dilanjutkan hingga 14 hari pasca paparan untuk melihat ada/tidaknya hewan uji yang mati. Pada hari ke-15, seluruh hewan uji dikorbankan dan dibedah untuk diisolasi, ditimbang organ vitalnya dan dilakukan pengamatan histologi. Hasil: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi ekstrak tersebut tidak menyebabkan gejala toksik terhadap hewan uji dan tidak ada satupun hewan uji yang mati. Hasil histopatologi organ hepar menunjukkan bahwa kombinasi ekstrak ini tidak menunjukkan efek berbahaya pada organ hepar hewan uji yang telah diberi paparan akut dengan dosis 2000 mg/kgBB. Kesimpulan: Ketoksikan kombinasi ekstrak larut etanol herba sambiloto dan daun sambung nyawa masuk dalam kategori unclassified (>2000mg/kgBB) menurut Globally Harmonized Classification System . Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that often affected fertility health, specifically in men. Gynura procumbens (G. procumbens) has been used as traditional medicine due to its ability in treating various types of illness. Hence, this study was carried out to determine the potential beneficial effect of G. procumbens as anti-hyperglycaemia, pro-fertility and libido agent towards diabetes-induced male rats. A total of 42 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned into six groups; normal, negative, and positive control, and three treated groups of different dosages of G. procumbens aqueous extract (GPAE); 150 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg and 450 mg/kg. Each group was given treatment via oral gavage for seven consecutive days. The rats were sacrificed on day eighth for further analysis. The fasting blood glucose (FBG) level in all GPAE treated group showed significant decrease, and 450 mg/kg treated group showed significant reduction to a normal blood glucose level compared to all groups. There were significant increases in the sperm quality of GPAE treated groups after seven days of treatment compared to the negative and positive control group, specifically in 450 mg/kg treated group. Testis histology showed that GPAE treated groups produced a significant result whereby the seminiferous tubules were seen packed with sperm and successive stage of spermatogenesis were shown compared to control groups. Hormone analysis suggested that the luteneizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone hormone of the treated groups were elevated after seven days of treatment compared to the negative and positive control groups. Libido analysis of seven days treatment showed that GPAE treated groups, significantly improved in 450 mg/kg dose compared to other groups, with the highest number of mounting frequency and shortest mounting latency. Fertility test revealed a significant increase in number of implantation sites produced in GPAE treated groups compared to positive and negative control groups. In conclusion, GPAE exhibited a potential beneficial effect as an anti-diabetic and also as fertility agent in diabetic-induced male rats.

Gynura procumbens and Cleome gynandra are two herbs commonly used in Malaysia to treat various ailments and are also consumed as salads (ulam) and vegetables. The present study aims to evaluate the relationship between the chemical compositions of both herbs and their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics approach, which is being reported for the first time. Different ethanolic extracts of both herbs were tested for DPPH scavenging and inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) via RAW 264.7 macrophage cell induction. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed a good separation between the extracts and the corresponding metabolites identified via 1H NMR spectroscopy. The 100% ethanolic extract from both herbs and 20% ethanolic extract of C. gynandra were found to have the best antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Kaempferol, quercetin, caffeoylquinic, dicaffeoylquinic acids, gallic acid, mallic acid, citric acid, phenylalanine, and choline are among the metabolites that contributed to bioactivities. The partial least square (PLS) model for both herbs have an overall acceptable goodness of fit and predictive power, which further strengthens the validity of this study. The present study provides a preliminary reference for the selection of optimum extract and will shed some light on the potential use of G. procumbens and C. gynandra as a phytomedicinal preparation.

Introduction: Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. (Family: Asteraceae) is mainly popular in South-East Asian countries for its traditional medicinal properties. It is usually used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of eruptive fevers, rash, kidney disease, migraines, constipation, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cancer. It is commonly used as a traditional medicine in Vietnam for the treatment of many diseases. Methods: The leaves and trunks of G. procumbens were collected, macerated with methanol. The extracts from MeOH-soluble extract were processed by the column chromatographic technique to give pure compounds and the nuclear magnetic resonance methods were applied to determine their chemical structures. The inhibitory activities of these extracts against α-glucosidase were conducted and compared with acarbose. Results: Seven organic compounds were isolated and determined the structures, including syringic acid (1), quercetin (2), N,N-dimethylanthranilic acid (3), dehydrovomifoliol (4), β-sitosterol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5), schottenol (6), montanic acid (7). The inhibition of α-glucosidase test results the IC50 values of the four extracts which were lower than those of acarbose. Conclusion: Seven pure compounds were identified from the leaves and trunks of G. procumbens, including two compounds being isolated from G. procumbens for the first time. The test results showed that the the parts of G. procumbens were active as α-glucosidase inhibitor, which would be useful to support the treatment for diabetes.

Background: Medicinal plants are important source of drugs with pharmacological activities. Therefore, there is always rising demands to discover more therapeutic agents from various species. Orthosiphon stamineus, Gynura procumbens and Ficus deltoidea are high valued medicinal plants of Malaysia contain rich source of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. The aims of the present study were to evaluate anti-oxidant, antimicrobial and anti-proliferative effects on A549, HeGP2 and MCF7 cell lines of four different extracts of Orthosiphon stamineus, Gynura procumbens and Ficus deltoidea. Methodology: The leaves of all selected plants were extracted with methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol separately with simple cold maceration. Antioxidant activity of all crude extracts were quantitatively measured against DPPH and Ferric Reducing Assay. Antimicrobial evaluation was done by Microdilution and MTT assay and antipoliferative activity of all extracts of selected plant were evaluated against A549, HePG2 and MCF7 cell lines. Results: Results showed that methanol extract exhibited highest percentage free radical scavenging activity of almost all extracts of selected plants. Antimicrobials results showed chloroform and methanol extracts of O. stamineus extract were the two most active extracts against resistant MRSA but not S. aureus. Only methanol extract of G. procumbens showed antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogens. Chloroform and methanol extracts of F. deltoidea elicited antimicrobial activity against S. aureus but not MRSA. Antiproliferative activity against three tested cell lines results showed that ethyl acetate extract of O. stamineus showed good effect whereas methanol extract of F. deltoidea and G. procumbens exhibited good antiproliferative activity. Conclusions: The results of the present investigation demonstrated significant variations in the antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiproliferative effects of different solvent extracts. These data could be helpful in isolation of pure potent compounds with good biological activities from the extracts of plants. The aim of this research was to study the effect of extract of the sambung nyawa (Gynura procumbens (Lour.)Merr.)) leaf on hemoglobin concentration of rats blood. The research method is experimental used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) that consists of 6 treatments and 3 replications. The treatment of this research was induced rats with E. coli then given 0.5 mL of sambung nyawa leaf extract with doses 0.0 mg/kgBW; 300 mg/kgBW; 600 mg/kgBW and 900 mg/kgBW . The data was analyzed using Analysis of Variance. The results showed that the giving extract of the sambung nyawa leaves gives effect on on hemoglobin concentration of rats blood. Giving sambung nyawa leaf extract at dose 0.00 mg/kgBW; 300 mg/kgBW; 600 mg/kgBW and 900 mg/kgBW to rats gave the average of hemoglobin concentration in a row in each treatment is 10,5 g/dL; 11,7 g/dL; 12,3 g/dL and 13,7 g/dL.

Azadirachta indica A.Juss. and Gynura procumbens (Merr.) are medicinal herbs widely used in traditional medicine. Recent research on the combination of these two plants showed aggressive antioxidant activity. The combination results can improve insulin and beta-cell morphology and can increase insulin expression. The variety of activities performed is the basis for conducting acute toxicity tests on the ethanol extract of Azadirachta Indica A. Juss. and Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. to increase public confidence in its efficacy and ensure the safety of its use. The acute toxicity test on the ethanol extract of Azadirachta Indica A. Juss. and Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. was carried out on female Wistar rats by following the 423 procedures of OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) Guideline with five groups of experimental animals, namely normal treatment, aquadest solvent treatment and 0.5 Na-CMC 0.5%, a separate treatment of the ethanol extract of Azadirachta Indica A. Juss., a separate treatment of the ethanol extract of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr., and combination treatment of the ethanol extract of Azadirachta Indica A. Juss. and leaves of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. Furthermore, it was proceeded by observing the liver of the experimental animals histopathologically. The acute toxicity test results utilizing the 423 procedures of the OECD did not confirm any death or signs of toxicity in the experimental animals, and histopathological observations did not show any major histopathological damage. Based on these results, according to Globally Harmonized Classification System (GHS), the combination of the ethanol extract of Azadirachta Indica A. Juss. and Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. is included in the unclassified category ( 2,000 mg/kg BW.

A new cerebroside (1), along with three known steroidal compounds, β-sitosterol (2), daucosterol (3), and stigmasterol (4), were isolated from the roots of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. The structure of 1 was determined to be 1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(2R,6E,9R,12E)2-[(2′R)-2′-hydroxypentacosaneoyl-amino]-6,12-heptadecene-1,9-diol on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence.

Constipation is a symptom of a problematic, non-smooth and irregular defecation process. While laxative is a substance that stimulates intestinal peristalsis as a reflex of direct stimulation of the intestinal wall that can cause or facilitate defecation. This study aimed to determine the ethanol extract of the leaves of Gynura procumbens (L.) Merr. effect as a laxative in white male mice induced by loperamide. The methods used for laxative testing are defecation patterns and intestinal transit methods. The parameters observed included frequency of defecation, stool consistency, stool weight every 30 minutes for 4 hours, and the length of the activated carbon in the mice's intestine. The extract was administered orally at a dose of 75 mg/kg BW, 150 mg/kg BW and 300 mg/kg BW, as a comparison used negative control (Na CMC). This research was aimed to create aromatic candle, infused with cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) bark essential oil, which is a potential repellant for house fly (Musca domestica). The distillation of akar wangi samples was carried out at the Spice and Aromatic Research Unit by vapor distillation method for 9-12 hours. The aromatic candles were based on a mixture of solid paraffin and stearin in a 2:8 proportion, respectively, enriched with fragrant root bark essential oils with 5 formulas, namely F1 (placebo), F2 (fixative), F3 (1% essential oil), F4 (2% essential oil), and F5 (3% essential oil). The repellency test was carried out by inserting 20 house flies in a of 50x50x50 cm container that contains a lighted aromatic candle according to the doses mentioned above, and shrimp scalps located 15 cm from the candle that functions as a bait. The calculated parameters were the hourly number of flies that were allured to the bait for 6 hours, which were related to the candle’s repellency and the house fly’s preference of candle. The repulsion ability result were 89.724%, 75.28%, 68.06%, 49.17%, 9.72% for F5, F4, F3, F2, and F1, respectively. The result also showed that the F4 sample was the most preferred sample.

Nowadays, the use of medicinal plants increased significantly for the aim of producing more effective drugs with fewer side effects. Gynura procumbens (family Asteraceae) is a high value medicinal plant with different properties that are considered less, regardless of having great therapeutic potential in traditional medicine. Many pharmacological studies have established the ability of this plant to exhibit antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepatoprotection, antigenotoxic, antiplasmodial, cytotoxic, cardioactive, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, etc. The aim of this study was to review the updated phytochemical, pharmacological investigations as well as the traditional and therapeutic uses of G. procumbens. Important and different experimental data have been addressed along with a review of most of the phytochemicals identified in this plant.

The present study was designed to evaluate the preliminary phytochemical profiles and pharmmacological activities of different extractives (methanol and chloroform) of the leaves and stems of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. Preliminary phytochemical screenings demonstrated the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, gums and amides and reducing sugar in leaves and stems. Significant α-amylase inhibitory activities were found by the methanol (66.67%) and chloroform (70.63%) extracts of leaves of G. procumbens as compared to the standard drug acarbose (95.45%) at a concentration of 400 μg/ml. In the castor oil-induced diarrhea, the maximum inhibition of defecation was found by the chloroform fraction. During the anxiolytic activity test which was performed by open field and hole cross method, different extractives of leaves and stems of G. procumbens (500 mg/kg bw) reduced the total count of square crossed and hole crossed to a considerable extent in comparison to the control groups. A pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of various organic manures on the growth performance and biomass production of Gynura procumbens in the net house of the Department of Soil, Water and Environment, University of Dhaka. Seven types of manures, viz. ACI, BGF-1, Mazim, Vermicompost, Sufola, GTS and Poultry litter composts were used separately at the rate of 15 ton/ha. Highest height (78cm) in poultry litter compost, leaf number (208.33 no./plant) in sufola manure, leaf area (53.64 cm2/plant) in vermicompost, and branch (3.67 no./plant), girth (3.07cm/plant), fresh weight (202.28g/plant) and dry weight (22.44g/plant) were recorded in poultry litter compost treatment at harvest. Height, leaf area, and fresh and dry weights of leaf varied significantly (p≤ 0.5) and increased with time. Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. is a well-known plant used in folkloric medicine in tropical Asian countries. The plant is prevalently employed by traditional healers in the treatment of diabetes, cancer, hypertension, inflammation, fever, and skin disorders. Several scientific studies reported that Gynura procumbens possesses considerable therapeutic value for the development of emerging treatment options. The diverse pharmacological effects of this plant are attributed to its vast phytoconstituent content. Different chemical classes, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, steroids, proteins, and polysaccharides, have been isolated from this plant. In this review, we tried to explore the different aspects of Gynura procumbens as an established medicinal plant. The data gathered here give an indication that the plant Gynura procumbens is a good natural source of chemical compounds with different types of pharmacological actions, and these chemical compounds can be used as models for the development of de novo therapeutic agents.

This study aimed to determine the total phenolic content, DPPH scavenging, α-glucosidase, and nitric oxide (NO) inhibition of Gynura procumbens and Cleome gynandra extracts obtained with five different ethanolic concentrations. The findings showed that the 100% ethanolic extract of G. procumbens had the highest phenolic content and the lowest IC50 values for DPPH scavenging and NO inhibition activity compared to the properties of the other extracts. For C. gynandra, the 20% and 100% ethanolic extracts had comparably high total phenolic contents, and the latter possessed the lowest IC50 value in the NO inhibition assay. In addition, the 20% ethanolic extract of C. gynandra had the lowest IC50 value in the DPPH scavenging assay. However, none of the extracts from either herb had the ability to inhibit α-glucosidase enzyme. Pearson correlation analysis indicated a strong relationship between the phenolic content and DPPH scavenging activity in both herb extracts. A moderately strong relationship was also observed between the phenolic content and NO inhibition in G. procumbens extracts and not in C. gynandra extracts. The UHPLC-ESI-Orbitrap-MS revealed major phenolics from the groups of hydroxycinnamic acids, hydroxybenzoic acids, and flavonoid derivatives from both herbs, which could be the key contributors to their bioactivities. Among the identified metabolites, 24 metabolites were tentatively assigned for the first time from both species of studied herbs. These two herbs could be recommended as prospective natural products with valuable medicinal properties.

The leaves of Annona muricata (sirsak), Gynura procumbens (sambung nyawa), and Typhonium flagelliforme (keladi tikus) have been used as traditional medicines in Indonesia. This study aims to determine the antioxidant capacity and putatively identified phenolics from the leaves of three medicinal plants forementioned above. We used the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method for measuring radical scavenging (antioxidant assay) while the phenolics profiling was determined using UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS. The results showed that the percentage of radical scavenging activity of G. procumbens leaves extract in ethanol was higher than the other two plants. Phenolics profiling of the three medicinal plants was identified with 38 compounds belonging to flavones and flavanols hydroxycinnamic acid, and several other groups. The number of metabolites identified putatively was 12, 31, and 19 metabolites in the extracts of A. muricata, G. procumbens, and T. flagelliforme, respectively. The results confirmed the correlation between the phenolics presence and the antioxidant capacity of three plants used in this study.

Nonhealing wounds are major socioeconomic challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. Therefore, there is a substantially unmet need to develop new drugs for wound healing. Gynura procumbens, a herb found in Southeast Asia, may be an effective therapeutic for nonhealing diabetic wounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of G. procumbens on wound healing in the diabetic milieu. G. procumbens extract was obtained using 95% ethanol and its components were determined by thin layer chromatography. Diabetes was induced in mice using streptozotocin. We found that G. procumbens extract contained stigmasterol, kaempferol and quercetin compounds. Topical application of G. procumbens on the wounded skin of diabetic mice accelerated wound healing and induced the expression of angiogenin, epidermal growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, transforming growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor. Furthermore, G. procumbens promoted in vitro wound healing and enhanced the migration and/or proliferation of human endothelial cells, fibroblasts, keratinocytes and mast cells cultured in diabetic conditions. Finally, G. procumbens promoted vascular formation in the diabetic mice. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that evaluates in vivo wound healing activities of G. procumbens and activation of cells involved in wound healing process in diabetic conditions. The findings that G. procumbens accelerates wound healing and activates cells involved in the wound healing process suggest that G. procumbens might be an effective alternative therapeutic option for nonhealing diabetic wounds.

Gynura procumbens is a medicinal plant commonly used in Asian countries such as China, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. G. procumbens content flavonoids and glycosides and have bacteria activity and anti-fungal activity such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger. The purpose of this study was to obtain empirical data about the effect of using the G. procumbens leaves extract on reducing dandruff on the scalp. The extract was obtained by the maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent. The phytochemical compound content is determined with spectrophotometry ultraviolet. Two observers observe the scalp by using observation sheets and grating instruments assisted by a skin and hair analyzer. The reduction of scalp dandruff was the difference between the initial the results and the final test (after treatment). The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique totaling ten people and divided into two groups (experimental and control groups). The results showed that the calculation of hypothesis testing after analyzing the data obtained a value of t count (5.817)>t table (1.86). This showed an effect of using the G. procumbens leaves extract as a shampoo for reducing dandruff on the scalp. The use of G. procumbens leaves extract as shampoo can reduce dandruff.

Sambung Nyawa leaves (Gynura Procumbens [Lour].Merr) have been used as a traditional medicine. Sambung Nyawa leaves contain flavonoid compounds, its functional as a natural antioxidant. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of Sambung Nyawa leaves extract addition as an antioxidant and ability to preserve the quality of coconut oil. Firstly, flavonoids were extracted from Sambung Nyawa leaves with combination of raw material to solvent ratio (w/v) and extraction temperature. The extracts which gave the highest total flavonoids contents were mixed into the coconut oil for 3 days, 6 days, 9 days, 12 days, and 15 days. Total flavonoids contents of Sambung Nyawa leaves extracts were analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The analyses for coconut oil were the value of acid, iod, and peroxide number. The results showed that the highest total flavonoids contents of 1,32 % be obtained with raw material to solvent ratio of 1:10 (w/v) and extraction temperature of 55 oC. The lowest acid number of 0.45%, the highest iod number of 7.90 gr I2/100 gr, and the lowest peroxide number of 4.40 mg O2/100 gr be obtained with stored time of 3 days for coconut oil which mixed with the Sambung Nyawa leaves extracts.

Background: Andrographis paniculata, Gynura procumbens, Ficus deltoidea and Curcuma xanthorrhiza are commonly consumed as herbal medicines. However their effects on human liver glucuronidation activity are not yet evaluated. Objective: In this study, we evaluate the inhibitory Effects of Andrographis paniculata, Gynura procumbens, Ficus deltoidea and Curcuma xanthorrhiza extracts and their constituents on human liver glucuronidation activity. Materials and Methods: Herbal extracts (aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic extracts) and their constituents were incubated with human liver microsomes with the addition of UDPGA to initiate the reaction. Working concentrations of herbal extracts and their constituents ranged from 10 μg/mL to 1000 μg/mL and 10 μM to 300 μM respectively. IC50 was determined by monitoring the decrement of glucuronidation activity with the increment of herbal extracts or phytochemical constituent's concentrations. Results: All herbal extracts inhibited human liver glucuronidation activity in range of 34.69 μg/mL to 398.10 μg/mL whereas for the constituents, only xanthorrhizol and curcumin (constituents of Curcuma xanthorrhiza) inhibited human liver glucuronidation activity with IC50 of 538.50 and 32.26 μM respectively. Conclusion: In the present study, we have proved the capabilities of Andrographis paniculata, Gynura procumbens, Ficus deltoidea and Curcuma xanthorrhiza to interfere with in vitro glucuronidation process in human liver microsomes. SUMMARY This study documented the capabilities of Andrographis paniculata, Gynura procumbens, Ficus deltoidea and Curcuma xanthorrhiza to inhibit human liver glucuronidation activity which may affect the metabolism of therapeutic drugs or hazardous toxicants that follow the same glucuronidation pathway. Herb is a famously used as medicinal plant as an alternative to chemicals based medicine since it is safer. Gynura Procumbens (sambung nyawa) is bicolor (green and red) herbal plant which is widely grown in Asia. Recent studies proved that this plant has anti-herpes simplex virus, anti-flammatory and antihyperglycaemic properties. This work investigated the extraction of chlorophyll a and b from gynura procumbens of green-leaf species. Optimization was done both by experiment and also Response Surface Method. Solid liquid extraction was used to extract the chlorophyll a and b. The solid to solvent ratio, temperature, solvent used and extraction time were varied to determine the optimum conditions for extraction. It was found that at 80C in 90 minutes with 2:5 solid to solvent ratio were the most favorable conditions to extract chlorophyll a and b. Five valuable compounds was found from GC-MS analysis which are 2-Hexanal, Phenol, Oleic Acid, Copaene and Phytol. This implies that Gynura Procumbens promises a good source of many useful bioactive compounds.

Background: In Southeast Asia, Gynura procumbens has been utilized as a traditional medicinal herb for many diseases. The nontoxic effects of the leaves of G procumbens can be consumed safely for the treatment of many diseases, especially diabetes mellitus. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic effects of G procumbens leaves through different extracts. Methods: Cold extraction was employed for G procumbens leaves. Disc diffusion, bovine serum albumin denaturation, brine shrimp lethality assays, and microscopic examination of tissues (ie, liver, kidney, and heart) were performed to measure antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities, and histopathologic analysis, respectively. Results: The distinct concentrations of aqueous, ethanol, and n-hexane extracts showed prominent antibacterial activity against four pathogenic bacterial strains (Chromobacterium sp, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, and Escherichia coli 0157:H7:LT). The aqueous extract of G procumbens at a concentration of 200 µg/mL showed potential antibacterial activities against S aureus and E faecium, with mean (SD) zones of inhibition of 15 (1.0) mm and 10 (0.55) mm, respectively. At a concentration of 40 µg/mL, the aqueous extract of G procumbens exhibited significant (P < 0.01) anti-inflammatory activity compared with that of the other 2 extracts in the bovine serum albumin denaturation assay. The n-hexane extract showed moderate cytotoxic activity compared with that of vincristine sulfate. The median lethal concentration values of the aqueous, ethanol, and n-hexane extracts were 427.66, 218.56, and 114.51 μg/mL, respectively. The aqueous extract exhibited lower cytotoxicity than that exhibited by the ethanol and n-hexane extracts. The histopathologic analysis results showed that the aqueous extract of G procumbens had no harmful effects on the different organs of the experimental mice. Introduction: Gynura procumbens (GP), otherwise known as longevity spinach or “Sambung Nyawa” in Malay, is an evergreen herb found in Africa and Southeast Asian countries (including Brunei) used traditionally to treat various diseases such as fever, diabetes and hypertension. We examined GP’s vasodilatory action to determine its possible role via the cholinergic-mediated pathway. Methods: GP leaves were prepared by filtration and evaporation to obtain the aqueous (AEGP) and methanol (MEGP) extracts followed by screening for phytochemical constituents. The total phenol, total flavonoid and flavonol contents were determined using the corresponding Folin–Ciocalteau, and aluminium colorimetric methods and the presence of kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside in the extracts was detected using HPLC analysis. Organ bath studies were conducted to determine the vasodilatory activity using intact and denuded isolated rat aortic rings by exposure to either increasing concentration of extracts (0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/mL) or 10 µg/mL kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside in the presence or absence of acetylcholine (ACh) after pre-contraction by noradrenaline (NA). Results: MEGP contained more phytochemical constituents and higher content of total flavonoid and total flavonol but less phenolic content than AEGP. Furthermore, MEGP yielded a 20% elevated amount of kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside than AEGP. Both extracts significantly amplified ACh-endothelium dependent vasodilation and mediated relaxation at 1 mg/mL in endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded aortic rings with MEGP as a more effective vasodilator than AEGP. Overall, these results imply the involvement of extracts in potentiating cholinergic pathway, which might be mediated by kaempferol, as shown by its vasorelaxation effects in endothelium-intact and –denuded aorta. Conclusions: The present findings demonstrate that the vasodilatory activities of the two Gynura procumbens extracts, AEGP and MEGP, in thoracic aorta rings isolated from rats are potentially mediated via a cholinergic pathway through the action of a flavonoid particularly kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside.

Sambung nyawa leaves (Gynura Procumbens [Lour]. Merr) is used as traditional medicine. Sambung nyawa leaves contain flavonnoid compound which can be used as natural antioxidant. This research was done to analyze the effect of the additon of Sambung Nyawa leaves extract as antioxidant and its ability to keep the quaity of coconut oil. The variables used in this research were the ratio of raw material to solvent (m/v) and extraction temperature. First, extraction was done to extract flavonoid compound from Sambung Nyawa leaves. The extract of Sambung Nyawa leaves with the highest flavonoid compound was mixed with coconut oil for 3 days, 6 days, 9 days, 12 days and 15 days. Total flavonoid level from Sambung Nyawa leaves was analyzed by UV-Vis Spectrophotometry. Acid number, iodine number and peroxide number of the coconut oil were also analyzed in this research. The highest total flavonoid level obtained was 1.32% at 55°C by using 1:10 (m/v) of raw material to solvent ratio. The lowest acid number, the highest iodine number and the lowest peroxide number in coconut oil with Sambung Nyawa leaves extract after it was kept for 3 days were 0.45%, 7.90g I2/100g and 4.40 mg O2/100g respectively.

Gynura procumbens, also known as sambung nyawa is a medicinal plant that belongs to Astereceae family. Many research and studies shows that Gynura procumbens is well known for its bioactive compounds and health benefits. Gynura procumbens leaves are often consumed raw or added in cooking. Gynura procumbens leaves are easily withered and rotten because of its high moisture. Therefore, the aim of this study was to make the Gynura procumbens as a powder that can be used and more applied, especially in the production of food and drinks as a form of food diversification and functional food. The making of Gynura procumbens powder consists of sorting, washing, blanching, drying, blending, sieving, packing and sealing, then analysing its moisture, total ash, and crude fibre. The powder was analysed using standard official methods and three replicates. The analysis results of the Gynura procumbens powder were moisture (6.6773%) which is lower than in the fresh leaves (82.4898%), total ash (6.3846%) which is higher than in the fresh leaves (4.3232%), and crude fibre (5.5527%) which is lower than in the fresh leaves (6.4458%).

Tiger Grouper is one of the sea water fish commodities that is quite popular with the community and has a high economic value. The problem faced by farmers is the attack of Vibriosis, one of which is caused by the Vibrio alginolyticus bacteria. The use of synthetic antibiotics has been widely used but has many adverse effects, so it needs new alternatives for the treatment of Vibriosis disease. One of them is by using the extract of lifelong leaf extract. Life-sustaining plants (Gynura procumbens) contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, tannins, and antibacterial saponins. This study aims to determine the best dosage of lifelong leaf extract for the treatment of Vibriosis disease in tiger grouper. The study was conducted in two stages, namely in vitro and in vivo. Before the fish were treated with feed that had been given a sambung deca leaf extract, the fish were challenged using Vibrio alginolyticus with a density of 108 CFU / mL as much as 0.1 mL / head and then fed with treatment and maintained for 21 days. The results of the in vitro study showed that the life of sambung leaf extract at a dose of 700 ppm had a broad inhibitory effect on V. alginolyticus, which amounted to 10.47 mm compared to other treatments. Whereas when continued for in vivo testing, a dose of 350 ppm in general has been applied for the treatment of attacks of Vibrio alginolyticus in tiger grouper.
