The article describes a subsystem of exercises and tasks for the formation of English language lexical competence in professionally oriented active reading for students of the field of knowledge 19 Architecture and construction, specialty 192 Construction and civil engineering. The stages of the formation of English-language lexical competence in professionally oriented active reading are determined and characterized: 1) acquaintance, 2) automation, 3) application. To form this competence, we consider effective the following methods of active reading: Know- Want-Learn (KWL), SQ3R (Survey, Questions, Read, Recall, Review) and examples of exercises and tasks performed at each stage of working with authentic texts. The subsystem of exercises and tasks is described and implemented at the pre-text, text and post-text stages of work. All educational information for the formation of lexical competence in English reading is accompanied by an authentic visualization which we understand as conditionally technical (drawings, figures, photographs, diagrams, charts, graphs, videos, etc.). Authentic visualization of educational information is developed as a supplement to textual material for better understanding and perception information on the specialty and complements it. The organization of the stages of lexical competence formation is taken into account during the developing the exercises and tasks.

This research was motivated by low ability in English subject, reading comprehension in particular among students in Mechanical Engineering study program. Politeknik Harapan Bersama. Based on some related studies, SQ3R technique is as one of learning techniques that proved to enhance reading skills. This research was conducted with the assumption that the technique was able to improve reading comprehension. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to determine the effect of SQ3R technique on students' reading comprehension. The research presented 2 variables namely SQ3R technique (X) and reading comprehension (Y). Pre-Experimental method of One Group Pretest-Posttest Design was implemented with one class of Mechanical Engineering consisting 26 male and 1 female student involved during the study. Data were gained through cloze test and observation sheet. All data were then processed and analyzed quantitatively to determine the effect of the SQ3R technique on the students' ability to comprehend the passage. The results showed that tcount (5.001) was greater than ttable (2.080). Thus, this can be concluded that SQ3R technique has positive effect (54.4%) on the students' reading comprehension.

The objectives of the research were to investigate whether there was a statistically significant difference of the students’ reading comprehension achievement after the implementation of DRTA strategy and SQ3R strategy. Furthermore, the approach used in this research was quantitative. The subjects were 32 students for DRTA group and 31 students for SQ3R group of Junior High school 9 Bandar Lampung. The reading tests were used as the research instrument. In addition, the data were analyzed by using Repeated Measure t-test. The result showed that there was a statically significant difference of students’ reading comprehension with the significant level 0.05. From the result, it is suggested that SQ3R strategy can facilitate students better to improve their achievement in reading comprehension. Identifying learning of the information in explanatory text requires creativity in its implementation. One of the things that affect identifying learning of the information in explanatory text is the students’ reading intensity. Therefore, it takes the most effective learning method to be applied and the learning method chosen is the SQ3R method. The purpose of this study was to explain the effectiveness of identifying learning of information in explanatory text by using the SQ3R method based on the reading intensity of the XI grade students at Madrasah Aliyah. The method used in this study was an experimental research design with a quasi-experimental factorial. The sample of this research is students of class IX MAN 2 Kudus. The collection of data uses identifying learning of the explanatory text information and reading intensity test to determine high or low reading intensity. Non-test data collection uses observation and photo documentation. The results of this study were (1) The SQ3R learning method was effective in identifying information in explanatory text for class XI students of Madrasah Aliyah with an increase of 12.23, from an average of 66.51 to 78.74. This is evidenced by the sign value=0.000

SQ3R is a method to get knowledge from reading sources. Thus, the contents of a reading source will become effective as a knowledge, in this case the knowledge instructed by the lecturer in the "English for Specific Purpose" Course. The desired knowledge obtained is the knowledge of "ISO" (International Organization for Stadardization) . After getting the contents of a reading about the "ISO", the lecturer will form a group for a conversation simulation in a company meeting by using the "Role Play" method, where students in the group will act as managers in a company. The limitation of this research is to only focus on the role of the SQ3R method on the "Role Play" method as one of the methods for teaching students' Speaking Skills at STIA Banten, especially students of the "English for Specific Purpose" class. In conducting this research, the author used the Action Research method or take certain actions or treatments to see the success of students to be able to communicate. Then, the data used is observation data with recording techniques and also the value of student learning outcomes. The results achieved in this study are that there is a close relationship between SQ3R conducted by students to find out about "ISO" and then practice it in the classroom using the "Role Play" method. From the results obtained by students, there is also visible progress before using the SQ3R method with students' speaking ability after using the SQ3R method.

The ability of students to read comprehension is relatively low, especially in understanding the reading text of the report of observations, so we need a learning innovation that can improve students' ability to read comprehension through the application of the SQ3R strategy. The formulation of the problem in this study are (1) How is the ability to read text comprehension reports on students' observations? (2) What is the ability to read understanding text reports of students' observations after using the SQ3R strategy? (3) Is the application of the SQ3R learning strategy effective in learning to read the text of the observation report? The purpose of this study is (1) to describe the ability of students to read the understanding of the text of the observation report. (2) describe the ability of students to read the text of the observation report after using SQ3R. (3) describe the effectiveness of the use of SQ3R in learning to read the text of the observation report. This study uses the Pre Experiment research method with the One-Group Pretest-Postest design. The results of the study showed that there was an increase in the ability to read comprehension in the text of the student's observation report. This is indicated by an increase in the average reading comprehension value of 15.98 from the average results before the implementation of the SQ3R learning strategy by 55.83 and after the implementation of the SQ3R strategy by 71.81. So that the SQ3R strategy is effectively applied to the learning of reading comprehension of the observation report text.

Dokkai or reading understanding in Japanese is one of the lessons that combines several skills such as kanji, sentence pattern, translation, and culture. From all those several skills dokkai is a lesson that need accuracy. The obstacles in learning dokkai as the error understanding and error translation is a problem that must be overcome. This research is using the method of SQ3R, that are survey, question, read, recite, and review. These stages can describes reading or discourse into several part that can be easily understood. This research is the action research that using two cycle, each cycle consists of 2 meetings. The object of the research is the students of the 7thsemester that took Jyoukyuu Dokkai as the lesson. The result of the research from the action that using this method is the skills of the students in understanding discourse become increase, finish is study and the activities become better than before. The student has the new method in understanding new reading and discourse.

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying SQ3R method in reading comprehension. Experimental research design is used as the research method. This research took place at SMPN 1 Mila. There was1 class chose as the sample with 24 students in class. The class was taught by using SQ3Rmethod.The instrument used to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which divided as pre test and post test. The result of the research was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that post -test was higher than pre-test Key Words: reading, SQ3Rmethod.

This service aims to increase reading interest in tsanawiah madrasah students or equivalent to junior high schools (SMP) with SQ3R reading techniques that can be applied in reading textbooks. The method of activities used in this service in the form of training/workshops and training results are simulated directly to each student through stages (1) Survey (2) Questions/questions (3) Read/read (4) Recite/Recall/Repeat/Retell and (5) Review/review/review. The trainees were 26 students from Tsanawiah Raudhatusyuban Madrasah and involved two teachers. The results of this service show that the reading ability of students of the Tsanawiah madrasah or equivalent to junior high school is still deficient so that the existence of reading training with the SQ3R method is expected to increase students' interest and reading skills.

This study aims to determine the effect of learning to read students using SQ3R method with student who don’t use the SQ3R method. The problem in this research is the difficulty of students in identifying a problem in a narrative reading text to determine the character, character, and setting in a story. In this study using a true experimental design research design with two classes in the control class and experimental class and two different treartment namely using treatment and not using treatment. In the control class in order to determine the effect on the two classes of researcher. On the result of the calculation of the classes in the control and experimental class there is a significant effect of students reading learning after being taught using the SQ3R method. Thus Ha: there is no significant effect of students reading learning after being taught using the SQ3R method. Ho: there is a significant effect of students reading learning after being taught using SQ3R method. In this explanation, it is evident that there is an influence of learning to read using the SQ3R method.

The article deals with the applying of active methods in reading and the formation of linguistic competence for teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) to future bachelors in the field of Civil Engineering.Purpose of the research is to describe linguistic competence as an important component of the process of teaching active methods in reading to future engineers, to define some active methods in reading that can be implemented in the teaching of ESP in the process of training future civil engineers.Methods. Reviewing the studies on linguistic competence in reading in the process of teaching ESP and methods of active reading.Results. Prospects for teaching methods of active reading (KWL and SQ3R) to future engineers in the ESP teaching process are described. The definition of lexical competence and its components in the process of teaching methods of active reading is given. The difficulties of teaching active reading in ESP for students of technical specialties are determined.Conclusion. Taking into account that creativity and active participation are important factors in motivating students to learn ESP, we consider it appropriate to use methods of active reading (KWL and SQ3R) in combination with other intensive methods and technologies to train future engineers. We believe that exercises and tasks with different forms and models of authentic visualization of educational information (AVEI) for learning English vocabulary in professionally oriented reading are effective. AVEI, taken from professional articles and other authentic materials in the field of civil engineering, can contribute to the formation of lexical competence of students.

This study is based on a novel conceptual framework, precision education, and takes a blended Python programming course as an example to explore how to implement precision education that includes diagnosis, prediction, prevention and treatment. Precision education follows the principles of personalized services for precision medicine. Its purpose is to strengthen the learning risk prediction and early intervention mentioned in emerging learning analytics through big data, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, thereby improving teacher teaching quality and student learning efficiency. This study is based on the design of the e-book learning dashboard, so that teachers can quickly understand students’ learning status, and improve the e-book through students’ feedback on the dashboard to achieve precision diagnosis. Next, this study uses machine learning algorithms to predict students' learning performance, and thus determine whether students are at-risk to achieve precision prediction. Finally, through the correspondence between reading strategy and reading sequence, and then clearly distinguish the types of students by grouping, and use it as a treatment target for precision treatment and prevention. It is hoped that this empirical study can be used as a case study for implementing precision education.

The aim of the research was to reveal the effectiveness of the use of the Robinson Strategy (SQ3R) in the development of reading absorption among middle-class second-grade students in the course of my timeless language course in Mecca. There are statistically significant differences at the level of significance (α≤0.05) between the average scoring of reading absorption skills (literal, inference, and monetary) in application (tribal-dimensional) in favor of the experimental group, and between the effect of the Robinson Strategy (SQ3R) in the development of reading absorption among middle-school students, the researcher recommended several recommendations, the most important of which is the use of the Robinson Strategy (SQ3R) in the teaching of Arabic language for the purposes of achieving effective learning.

Reading is one of the basic English skills which should be mastered by the students. This study was intended to explore the use of SQ3R technique to improve students` reading comprehension and to find out the students` perception toward the use of SQ3R technique. The method in this study is mixed method with Quan-qual model. The quantitative method used quasi-experimental design with control and experimental group. The population in this research used purposive sampling technique with the number of sample are 24 students as respondent; 12 students in control group and 12 students in experimental group. This study was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Saluputti from the eighth grade students in academic year 2016/2017. The instrument that the writer used are reading test and questionnaire and the data were analyzed through SPSS 20. The research findings shows that the implementation of SQ3R technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension ability especially the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Saluputti and the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Saluputti have good perception towards the use of SQ3R technique. This research shows the improvement in students` reading comprehension, for that reason, it is recommended that the English teacher apply certain effective technique in teaching reading to enhance student`s comprehension.

Penggunaan model dan metode sangat berpengaruh dalam proses pembelajaran. Di SDN 1 Bojong masih banyak siswa yang kurang mengerti akan pentingnya membaca, siswa menganggap bahwa membaca itu membosankan khususnya dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Pelaksanaan penelitian tindakan dilakukan di SDN 1 Bojong untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar dan pemahaman membaca siswa dalam pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian dilakukan pada kelas 4 dengan jumlah siswa 27, 11 laki-laki dan 16 perempuan. Setelah penelitian dilaksanakan maka peneliti memperoleh adanya peningkatan hasil belajar dan pemahaman membaca siswa dengan menerapkan SQ3R sebagai model pembelajaran dengan berbantuan Reka Cerita Gambar. Peningkatan tersebut ditunjukkan dalam pencapaian hasil belajar siswa yang dapat lebih dari atau sama dengan KKM yang sudah ditentukan dalam mata pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia yaitu 75. Pada siklus 1 siswa yang dapat mencapai nilai ≥75 berjumlah 17 dari 27 siswa atau sebanyak 63% dari 100% dan pada siklus 2 siswa yang telah mencapai nilai ≥75 berjumlah 21 dari 27 siswa atau sebanyak 78% dari 100%. Maka terlihat adanya peningkatan hasil belajar dan pemahaman membaca siswa dari siklus 1 ke siklus 2 dan penelitian menggunakan model pembelajaran SQ3R dinyatakan berhasil.

Coventional technique of reading is commonly used by Senior Hugh School Students that this may due to their low interest and achievement in reading. However, there are more effective reading-techniques such as SQ3R and PQRST and also another factor influencing students'achievement, family-learning way model. The study presents a comparison between reading ability for Seniro High School students using authoritative and democratic way, being taught by using SQ3R and PQRST models. It is an experimental study using students of SMA N 5 Purworejo by factorial design. For the experiment, we selected two classes consisting of the class X-1 as the first experiment group while the class X-2 as the second one. Based on family-learning way model, each group of experiment is devided into two sub-groups, the one getting authoritative while the other getting democratic treatment. The result shows that (1) reading ability of Senior High School students using authoritative family-learning who are taught using SQ3R model, is better than those being taught by using PQRST; (2) reading ability of Senior High School students using democratic way who are taught by using PQRST model, is better than those being taught by using SQ3R; and (3) there is interaction between reading technique using family-learning way model and the students' achievement. In short, technique of reading using family-learning way model has influenced students' achievement of reading.Key words: achievement, family-learning model, authoritative, SQ3R, and PQRST

The reading skill is one of the language skills that must be developed, cause reading is knowledge key in human life and it is most needed for human learning and education, as confirmed by the Koran, In it’s verse: read the name of your Lord who created. Many modern strategies such as: the SQ3R strategy, PQ4R strategy, strategy of 3P.A.S for quick reading, strategy of K.W.L.H To observe the cognitive development. These modern strategy can develope reading skill with its steps which are different from old reading steps. These modern strategies can be applied in school level to university level to enable students on reading comprehension.إن مهارة القراءة إحدى المهارات اللغوية التي لابد من تطويرها، وذالك لأن القراءة لاتزال مفتاح المعارف في الحياة البشرية، وأن الحاجة إليها ماسة لأنها أساس تعلم الإنسان وتعليمهم كما أكّدها القرآن الكريم بقوله الله تعالى : ﴿اقرأ باسم ربك الذي خلق …﴾. فاستراتيجياتها الحديثة كثيرة وهي: استراتيجية الخطوات الخمس (SQ3R)، إستراتيجية PQ4R ، إستراتيجية (3P.A.S) للقراءة السريـعة، إستراتيجية (K.W.L.H) لمراقبة النّمو المعرفي. وهذه الإستراتيجية الحديثة تستطيع أن تطوّر مهارة القراءة بخطواتها التي تختلف بخطوات القراءة القديمة. وهذه الإستراتيجية الحديثة يمكن تطبيقها للمرحلة المدرسية حتى المرحلة الجامعية لتمكين الطلاب على فهم المقروء.

Critical literacy (CL) is an area that remains under-researched regardless of the growing acknowledgement on its importance. Previously published works on CL have provided depictions of classroom implementations but they appeared to be lacking a guiding framework thus tended to be haphazard. This study addressed the gap by exploring the implementation of CL using a prototype model that combines the Four Resources Framework (FRF) as a theoretical frame and Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review (SQ3R) as a working model. The study aims at uncovering how CL could be infused into regular EFL Reading class using the model and how students developed their CL. The investigation involved 39 university students in Indonesia. The data were collected using multiple methods: observation, tests, interview, artifact, and questionnaire. Quantitative and qualitative data were concurrently analyzed by using statistical pack and interactive model, respectively. The study confirmed that questions and materials played key roles in turning a conventional Reading class into a CL class. Having exposed to critical questions, the students indicated progress in their practice as text users and text analysts. The analysis revealed that the students at differing baselines addressed the four roles differently in terms of the extent and consistency. Students with high proficiency tended to be more consistent in addressing the text user and text analyst roles either individually or as part of the group. In contrast, students with lower proficiency indicated inconsistent engagement with the two roles, particularly in individual work. Generally, the students’ ability to build critical stance to text was also determined by the complexity of the material. The easier the text was comprehended, the more critical the students were toward the text. The study suggests that it be necessary to include explicit teaching and sufficient provision of time in CL teaching to produce an automated critical response to texts.

This study is aimed to know the students respond the use SQ3R method in reading comprehension with the help of technology. This traditional method combined with some activities using technology in the pre-, during-, and post-reading activities. All of them were the steps to increase students' understanding. The survey was conducted to 105 Indonesian EFL learners who enrolled a reading classroom. The result of the survey indicates that the majority of students stated that the method of SQ3R combined with technology is beneficial for them to achieve their goal in reading.

The purpose of the current study is to present a class model of SQ3R instruction, which consists of 5 stages of reading strategy, Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review for foreign language learning and to investigate its effects on learners’ self-efficacy and their reading comprehension. Five reading steps of reading strategy were instructed associated with skill practices, annotating, note-taking and summary outlining. A total of 23 students in a college academic reading class participated in the study. Students’ self-selected academic reading materials were used for the course. Reading self-efficacy survey and the academic reading part of IELTS practice test were conducted before and after the instruction. Student products such as annotated texts and reaction writing as well as portfolios were collected and analyzed. The survey and academic reading test results indicated that the learners’ reading self-efficacy and their reading ability were improved and that the students seemed to have gained more confidence in academic reading.

Reading English text as a basic language skill has a complicated process to be absorbed by second language learners. In practice, Text-based has enlarged students to the complicated of reading comprehension. Therefore, various kinds of teaching reading strategies appropriate to students’ characters and needs are determined. This study aimed to identify teaching reading strategies that English teachers frequently use and identify students’ reading achievement by applying certain recommended strategies and identifying its effect in the teaching and learning process. The subject was thirty students in the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Jereweh, Academic Year 2019/2020. Data collection procedures were FGD, In-depth Interview, Observation, and a reading test. The reading test was distributed toward the Pre-test and Post-test. While the data analysis was a qualitative and inferential statistic. The findings showed two kinds of teaching reading strategies that were frequently applied by English teachers in SMPN 1 Jereweh, namely, SQ3R and QAR. By designing a new combination between both of those strategies, students reading comprehension achievement showed that dominantly students’ categorized in “Good “level. The mean score was significantly different (Pre-test= 55.83, while Post-Test= 78.92). In addition, the r = 0.00 < 0.05 meant that there were significant effects before and after implementing SQ3R and QAR strategies. Thus, this design was recommended for teaching reading comprehension.

Reading is an essential part of language instruction at all levels because it supports learning in innumerable ways. This study was undertaken to encourage the teachers in using SQ3R technique to improve students' reading comprehension and to find out the student' perception towards the use of SQ3R technique. Quan-qual model was adapted. The researcher has used 40 respondents for the study. This study was conducted for the first year undergraduate students of Government Arts and Science College, Rajapalayam, Virudhunagar District, Tamil Nadu in the academic year 2017-18. The methodology that the writer used are reading test before and after implementing SQ3R technique and the data were analyzed. Hence the research findings suggests that the implementation of SQ3R technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension ability especially the first year undergraduate students of Government Arts and Science College, Rajapalayam and they have good perception towards the use of SQ3R technique. The research, however, shows the improvement in students' reading comprehensive skill. There is a difference in their score after using the SQ3R technique. It is highly recommended that the English teacher could apply certain effective technique like the one used by the researcher in teaching reading to enhance student's comprehension.

This research aimed at investigating whether or not there is a different effect between PQRST and SQ3R strategies based on the text types upon the eighth grade students’ reading competency. This research was an experimental research with 2 X 2 factorial designs. The population was 6 classes (179 students) of grade VIII in SMPN 4 Singaraja in the academic year 2012/2013, in which 4 classes were sample of this research which was assigned into two groups, two classes with 60 students were PQRST strategy group, and two classes with 60 students were SQ3R strategy group determined by using a Multistage Random Sampling. The data were collected through reading comprehension test that were analyzed by using Statistical Two-Way ANOVA. The result shows that, first, FA = 31.533 with the significant value was 0.000 which was less than 0.5, therefore, there is a significance difference between the students who were taught by PQRST strategy than those who were taught by SQ3R strategy. Second, FAB = 2.624 with the significant value was 0.107 which was higher than 0.5, therefore, there is no interactional effect of teaching reading strategies (PQRST and SQ3R) and text types (narrative and recount) on students’ reading competency.

To learn a lesson well, we need to hear, see, ask questions about it, and discuss it with others. Not only that, teachers need to "do it", that is to describe something in their own way, to show their example, to try to practice their skills and to do tasks that demand the knowledge they have gained. Problems to be studied in this research are: Does using SQ3R model can improve student learning result of SD N 30 Timbulun in Indonesian language lesson? Steps taken in using the SQ3R learning model? The location of this research is SD Negeri 30 Timbulun. Subjects and Characteristics of students. Improved subjects are Indonesian subjects, while the number of students who became the target of research in class I as many as 27 people consisting of 15 women and 12 men. This research is in the form of process (observation and field note) and result of test. Observation is used to get data about students in following the learning of Indonesian language. This research indicates that the application of SQ3R model can improve comprehension comprehension if applied properly and in accordance with the implementation stage. Implementation of SQ3R model that is not perfect, less improve student learning result read comprehension. This is seen in classroom action research in cycle I to cycle III. Based on the research objectives, it can be concluded that the efforts of teachers to apply SQ3R model in reading comprehension learning can improve students' understanding of the reading. the details are as follows. 1) Increased reading progress through SQ3R model, every cycle I average score 56,44%, cycle II average value 66,11%, cycle III achievement result 88,11%. 2) The atmosphere of teaching and learning process goes well. All students do the job actively. This is seen when students strive to implement the stages of the strategy. Students can mention things that are known to the topic topics, can recount in their own words as well as summarize the content of the reading. 3) Activity of students in learning to run well because of its motivation to learn.

The study is aimed at improving the students’ reading comprehension ability in reading English class using SQ3R strategy, which refers to a reading technique covering a five step system developed by Francis P Robinson. Each of the steps stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. The study employed Classroom Action Research design. The subjects of the study were four of third semester students of the English Department of Palangka Raya State Islamic College of 2009/ 2010 academic year. The study was carried out in two cycles by following the four steps of action research: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Each cycle consisted of one meeting focusing pre-reading, whilst reading and post reading. The data of the study are taken from the results of observation checklists, field notes, and the students’ reading score. The result of the study showed that SQ3R strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension ability. It could be seen from the improvement of the students’ reading scores. The students were actively involved in reading class and they were highly motivated to attend the SQ3R reading class. Keywords: improving, SQ3R strategy, reading comprehension ability

The purpose of the quantitative study with a factorial experimental approach was to examine the significant increase and difference of students’ achievement in reading literacy and vocabulary mastery after being taught through the SQ3R with authentic texts and simplified texts at one English Study Program Public University in Jambi, Indonesia. The sample of this study was 56 six semester student teachers at one public university in Jambi. To collect the data, pre-test and post-test techniques were used. The result of paired sample t-test showed that there was a significant progress in students’ achievement of reading literacy and vocabulary mastery of both experimental groups. Moreover, the result of independent sample t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference in students’ achievement of reading literacy and vocabulary mastery between both experimental groups as well as level of achievement. The factorial analysis showed that there was an interaction between the kind of texts and students’ level of achievement both high and low achievers. Implications of findings and suggestions are discussed

In fall 2012, an interdisciplinary team of science, English, and library faculty embedded reading, writing, and information literacy strategies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curricula as a first step in improving student learning and retention in science courses and aligning them with the Next Generation Science and Common Core State Standards. The authors present their reading, writing, and information literacy contributions, explaining the importance of introducing these concepts and strategies into science courses.

The study aims at analyzing the development of students’ reading skill on Islamic texts in EFL class in Indonesia through SQ3R method. The research was designed as a collaborative classroom a ction research which was carried out at TBI-4 FTIK IAIN Palu. The subject of the research was the third semester students of TBI-4 FTIK IAIN Palu consisting of 2 4 students. The research was conducted in one cycle through stages of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The cycle consists of three meetings. The researcher with h is collaborator collected the data by using observation checklists, field notes, camera recording, and test. The result showed that the SQ3R method could develop students’ reading skill. This fact was supported by the result of achievement test. There were 19 students ( 75 %) who got score greater than 80 of 24 students, there were 6 students who could not reach the score. The research was stopped after the third meeting of cycle 1 in which the result of students’ achievement test have met the criteria of success. Based on this finding, the researcher concluded that the implementation of SQ3R method in teaching and learning process can develop students’ reading skill on Islamic texts. Reading bestows enjoyment and enlightenment. It unlocks the unknown. It is a complex cognitive activity that is indispensable for the kind of knowledge society. So the students of today's world must know how to learn from reading and to enter the present literate society. One who reads can lead others to light. People who read can be free because reading banishes ignorance and superstition. Reading has the power to revolutionize everyone's ways of thinking and living. It makes everyone think critically and creatively. Teachers must emphasize all kinds of reading, especially critical reading which is not just reading on the lines but it deals with reading between and beyond the lines. A critical reader challenges the author's assumptions, inferences, and conclusions, and judges the accuracy, reliability, quality and value of what he reads on the basis of sound criteria or standards developed through previous experiences. This kind of reading paves clear path for students to acquire better comprehensive ability through SQ3R techniques, computer multimedia and other activities such as skimming and scanning. Although there are ways and means to acquire reading skill, there are a few factors which affect it severely. Teachers must be careful in avoiding these hindrances and make their wards' reading easy, effective and successful. Teachers are the prime source for students in cultivating their reading habit. Their advice and encouragement will help the students move a step further in developing their attitude towards reading. Teachers can teach phonetics to readers of initial stage and help them pronounce the sounds of letters and words properly. They should also emphasize writing task in the primary grade as it is directly associated with reading programme. They can teach them syllabication to recognize new words. Special assistance may be given to students with regard to the selection of materials for reading based on their age, time and capacity and determine their reading levels. They must realize that they have to play major role in encouraging and engaging the students to become voracious readers.

Minimal research to date has evaluated the impact of Survey–Question–Read–Recite–Review (SQ3R) implementation (i.e., surveying prior to reading, generating questions, reading to answer said questions, reciting, and reviewing information) on content retention and student performance. Existing research is anecdotal or lacks ecological validity. The current research shows the impact of SQ3R implementation, as demonstrated by note packet completion, on student comprehension and retention. Results from the current study indicate that when students use SQ3R strategies, they retain more information, as demonstrated by higher achievement on course exams. Because students are not apt to utilize their textbooks in an effective manner independently, the author provides suggestions regarding the incorporation of these findings into course design.

This research entitled “Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension Through SQ3R Technique”. This research has purpose to figure out the use of SQ3R strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension. The population of this research is students of SMA Negeri 1 Cipongkor including eleventh grade of IPS class and IPA class. The number of population is 60 students. The sample of this research is only one class that is IPS class consists 30 students. The quantitative research method is used in this research, and specifically the one group pre-test post-test design as research design. The instrument of this researches is pretest and posttest and the writers also use t-test formula for collecting data. The result of the research shows that tobs is 2.42, the ttable with degrees of freedom (df) 29 and level of significance at 0.05 was 1,69. Based on the data, the t-test result was 2.42, it was higher that t-table (2.42 > 1.69). It means the alternative hypothesis was accepted. According to the data analysis which is collected, it can be concluded that the test is reliable. And the research showed that teaching students’ reading comprehension using SQ3R technique is very useful. Peserta didik kelas VIII F SMPN 7 Kediri merasa kesulitan dengan banyaknya hafalan dan maksud dari pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. Peserta didik juga tidak terlalu memperhatikan penjelasan dari guru ketika di kelas.Ditambah dengan jadwal pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia yang berada di akhir pelajaran.Hal ini membuat konsentrasi peserta didik menurun dan tidak semangat untuk belajar. Dari data yang didapat oleh peneliti, nilai rata-rata ulangan harian peserta didik kelas VIII F SMPN 7 Kediri hanya mencapai 74,4 atau masih di bawah KKM yang telah ditentukan. Peneliti memilih sebuah metode pembelajaran Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review. Metode SQ3R merupakan suatu metode membaca yang sangat baik untuk kepentingan membaca secara intensif dan rasional. Langkah pembelajaran untuk metode SQ3R adalah guru meminta siswa untuk mengamati atau mengidentifikasi seluruh teks. Siswa diminta untuk menyusun pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang relevan dengan teks. Guru membimbing siswa mencari ide pokok dan jawaban atas pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang telah dibuat pada langkah kedua. Siswa menyebutkan, siswa meninjau ulang seluruh pertanyaan dan jawaban secara singkat.Guru bersama siswa membuat kesimpulan bersama. Keberhasilan penelitian ini dapat dilihat dari peningkatan prestasi belajar siswa hingga 75% dengan nilai KKM minimal 78. Hasil peningkatan dapat terlihat dari data sebagai berikut: prasiklus 53%; siklus pertama 69%; siklus kedua 81%. Hasil tersebut dikatakan berhasil karena sudah melebihi indikator keberhasilan penelitian sebesar 75%.Hasil peningkatan dapat terlihat dari nilai rata-rata siswa sebagai berikut: prasiklus 74,4; siklus pertama79,1; siklus kedua82,2. Hasil tersebut dikatakan berhasil karena sudah melebihi indikator keberhasilan.

The main issue discussed in this article is the students’ low interest in reading textbooks. In addition, students do not use various techniques. As a result, they feel bored, and less concentrated when reading. The theory used in this research is the reading theory proposed by Tarigan (2008), reading comprehension techniques by Agustina (2008) and SQ3R reading techniques by Ermanto (2008) and Agustina (2008). This type of research is quantitative research using experimental method with SQ3R reading techniques. The population of this study were Indonesian Language and Literature Education students of FKIP Bung Hatta University who took the Reading Teaching Skills course. The sample was elected purposively. Based on data analysis, it was found that students did not apply the SQ3R reading technique well in determining the theme, plot, background, characterization, point of view and mandate, with an average value of 80.5. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the use of SQ3R reading techniques towards students’ reading comprehension at FKIP of Bung Hatta University Padang.

This study is trying to find a solution to the problem the researcher found in her preliminary study about reading for understanding. SQ3R is an abbreviation of Survey, Question, Read, Recite dan Review. This technique can increase the students’ involvement on the text they read. This technique also helps to form information in the students’ mind and make it meaningful. This research is a kind of quantitaive research to find the effect of implementation of SQ3R in reading for understanding. The treatment is given after gathering the data that both classes are homogenous. After analyzing the post test result, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect on the implementation of SQ3R on the students’ undertanding. It is supported by the data from the questionannaire which show the students’ respond on the implememtation of SQ3R in reading for understanding an Islamic text written in English.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the combined and partial effects of the Integrated Reading/Study Strategy and Conceptual Physics Approach on ninth grade private high school students’ achievement in and attitudes toward optics. The Integrated Reading/Study Strategy is a new strategy which was developed by integrating previously existing reading strategies of the KWL and SQ3R with classroom lecturing. The Conceptual Physics Approach is an instructional strategy developed on the basis of Conceptual Physics suggested by Paul G. Hewitt. To investigate the partial and combined effects of methods, factorial design was used. The study was conducted with 124 students from two private high schools in the Cankaya district region of Ankara, Turkey. Various teaching/learning materials were developed and used for the study. Two measuring tools, Achievement Test about Optics and Attitude Scale about Optics were used as pre and post tests before and after instruction. The study continued for a two-month treatment period. The results of the study showed that the combined effect of the Integrated Reading/Study Strategy and Conceptual Physics Approach improved students’ achievement significantly compared to the separate individual methods. Although the product of the Integrated Reading/Study Strategy and Conceptual Physics Approach increased students’ attitudes more compared to the remaining methods, the result is not statistically significant.

The understanding of a text should be interpreted at different levels: literal, inferential and critical-evaluative. A literal level is to understand everything that the author explicitly com- municates through a text; understanding a text at an inferential level means to interpret everything that the author wants to communicate, but that sometimes he does not explicitly say or write; understanding a text at a critical- evaluative level means to value, project and judge both the content of what one author states in his writing as well as the inferences or relationships that can be established from what appears in the text produced by an author. Some researches consider that college student graduates are not necessarily good readers even though they read advanced academic material, for this reason they do not always com- prehend the information. Many strategies have been proposed to be developed both in class and at home, to improve reading comprehension. Instructors can improve comprehension through non-reading related information such as background knowledge or experiences, ho- mework and class work, and learning aides. Instructors can also teach students how to use other strategies including the SQ3R method, peer teaching, encoding, and reading flexibility.

The research is intended to establish the importance of background knowledge in reading process and suggest a revitalization plan for the schema for reading education. The reading process as fundamental research and the schema conception have been studied and the present situation of reading education in the school libraries has been inspected. This research reviewed the reading strategies which school libraries require for the revitalization of the schema and based on this data, a method of SQ3R reading has been applied and a class model developed. As an outcome, a guidance plan for instruction was proposed and learning-activity materials applying graphic organizer have been produced. Subsequently, a class in school library was conducted. Following the outcome of the class and an expert`s review of the class model, this research has developed a class model for the revitalization of the schema for reading education in school libraries.

Recognizing our own learning strategies is an effective way to help ourselves to self evaluate for what we have done in our own learning. One among other factors leading to a successful learning is due to the effective learning strategies. However, not all learners are aware of what they have been doing in learning, or they even sometimes do not know how to learn. If this is the problem, learning strategy training can be very beneficial for the learners with this problem. Why should be through strategy training? The answer might lie on the fact that strategy is quite amenable to change, and by nature, teachable as well as learneable (Oxford, 1990). In addition, Nuswantara (2008) also found out that the successful learners (i.e. in learning English) were triggered by the courage of using various learning strategies, the more varied the learners are willing to try out, the broader the chance for success. Training is the way that can be selected to present to the learners’ various strategies that they can choose and at the same time employ when learning is taken place. Moreover, by means of training, learners are made aware of the strategy, and they can mend their own strategy, as a result, they become more self - directed rather than dependent. This article attempts to frame out from the perspective of how to bring reading strategies that are applicable for handling various reading content texts to the learners, and present the result of a one-group experimental study. Thus, training is prepared for college learners who are inevitably deal with various English content textbooks and the final aim of the training is to improve learners’ study skills. Then, one group experimental study using correlated sample provides some evidences supporting the effectiveness of the training. Specifying on reading strategies, SQ3R that is joined with other learning strategies involving writing activity, annotating a text and paraphrasing/summarizing is exposed to the learners. The effectiveness is assessed by means of reading comprehension test that assesses the ability of the learners to perceive information from a text they read. One group experimental study is aimed to measure the effectiveness of the treatment. Finally, the end product of the study is to give a support to the idea of strategy training for improving the quality of how to learn.

For courses in a marketing curriculum to be effective where traditional textbook-based teaching methods are used, students must have sufficient ability to comprehend assigned reading materials. In addition, marketing graduates will have to read proficiently to meet the expectations of employers and to satisfy their own need to be highly competent self-directed learners. Self-regulated reading training is put forth as a partial remedy, and implementation of the most popular of these methods—SQ3R—is explained.

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying SQ3R method in reading comprehension. Experimental research design is used as the research method. This research took place at MTS AMIN DARUSSALAM MEDAN. There were 2 classes chosen as the sample with 32 students in each class. The classes were divided into two groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group taught by using SQ3R method and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrument used to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which divided as pre test and post test. The result of the research was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that t-test was higher than t-table ( 3,93> 2,00 ) at the level of significant 0,05 with degree of freedom (df) 60. It means that hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted which shows that SQ3R method significantly improves the student’s reading comprehension. Learning of reading literature (in this concerning short story) in formal education scope (as in Islamic elementary school, especially at advanced grade) wasn’t maximal yet. In objective condition, learning of reading short story at advanced grade, generally still definite in structure analyzing, didn’t administer in activities that able to train students in reading and appraising literature critically. Thus, learning activities by applying some strategy to achieve learning objectives need to do. Some strategy which can be used are SQ3R strategy.SQ3R strategy is one of strategy in learning of reading to help reader understand whole and detail about content of the text. By using SQ3R strategy, reader (students) will be faster to find mind idea in the text. Steps of SQ3R application are survey, question, read, recite, dan review. To achieve learning objectives maximally, that steps should be apllied systematically.

E-book readers have the inherent advantage of affording learners both mobility and convenience. They can be considered ideal pedagogical tools for supporting learnersi¦ reading activities. In this study, the reading strategies SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Review) with the guidance mechanism were integrated into the e-book reading environment for assisting learners in their reading processes. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the reading guidance mechanism on the performance of English reading comprehension. The results show that learners who received reading guidance achieved better reading comprehension than those who didni¦t. Learners can get real benefits from the reading strategies only when they do carry through the strategies.

Use of a widely endorsed study technique, SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review), was investigated using secondary level students with specific learning disabilities. Results of three experiments indicated that even with direct teacher instruction throughout lessons, SQ3R did not produce a robust effect on literal comprehension, as measured by retelling after reading from expository texts. However, a functional relationship was demonstrated between length of material read and percentages of retelling. When retelling was assessed on an immediate recall task after short passages were read, percentages of retelling were higher than those obtained by students after reading longer passages.

Knowing the 'smart' way to approach academic and personal challenges can make a big difference in the undergraduate experience at a university. University Learning Skills (ULS), an optional First Year Experience (FYE) one-credit orientation course, was established at the University of Connecticut in an effort to help students modify their high school study habits to those needed for success in college. Data on retention shows an alarming figure of 20-30% of engineering students departing after the first year. The high number of students who either have academic difficulty or decide to change careers prompted the creation of the ULS course. The ULS course includes material on study skills such as time management, the Cornell note-taking method, and the SQ3R approach to textbook reading. It also introduces students to engineering facilities and university offices such as counseling services, career services, library, etc. Improved retention of these students who take the ULS course has occurred. Student evaluation of the course has been positive with 3 out of 4 feeling that it met or strongly met the objective of promoting a positive adjustment and assimilation into the university.

This article describes the results of a study in which college developmental reading students were taught how to use study techniques which involved self‐questioning. Over a nine‐week period, subjects were trained in the application of SQ3R (Robinson, 1961), REAP (Eanet & Manzo, 1976), and self‐questioning (Andre & Anderson, 1978‐79) to content area prose materials. Quantitative results indicated that the SQ3R group significantly outperformed the REAP group on a posttest measure of comprehension. No other significant differences were found. In addition, a qualitative analysis was conducted to determine how well subjects processed information during the application of their specific study techniques.
