COLOSTRUM , *OROPHARYNX , *PREMATURE infants , *C-reactive protein , *SEPTICEMIA in children - Abstract
Background: The administration of colostrum through its absorption at the oropharyngeal level stimulates the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, providing a local immunological protection barrier. The study aimed to investigate the association of oropharyngeal colostrum administration with the reduction of inflammatory indices. Materials and methods: This was an observational, ambispective, analytical study of newborns < 32 weeks of gestation at risk of sepsis. Oropharyngeal colostrum was administered at 0.2 mL every 4 h for 5 days. Inflammatory indices were analyzed. Statistical analysis included frequencies, percentages, mean and Standard deviation, contingency coefficient, and Kolmogorov--Smirnov test for the distribution curve of the numerical data. Results: There were 50 patients, 33 (66%) female and 17 (34%) male, with a median gestational age of 30-31 weeks (95% confidence interval [CI]). Nineteen patients had sepsis. A lower positivity rate in C-reactive protein was found, with a median of 0.5-0.6 (95% CI) at 5 days of colostrum administration versus 0.5-1.1 (95% CI) as the initial C-reactive protein. Analysis with χ² yielded a p = 0.13, and the contingency coefficient showed a p = 0.196, indicating an association. Conclusion: Oropharyngeal colostrum administration was associated with a lower C-reactive protein positivity rate and clinical improvement in premature newborns at risk of sepsis. - Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the main causes of blindness in children in Latin America. This retinopathy characterized by abnormal vascular proliferation of the retina due to proangiogenic factors, which imply a formation of structurally deficient new vessels that generate tractional retinal detachment. Since ROP is a sequentially progres-sive pathology, it requires the implementation of screening systems. The importance of screening in patients with risk factors will be described to detect it in opportune stages that allow to grant a better prognosis. Currently, tools such as Retcam, developed by Clarity Medical Systems, consists of a computer image acquisition system with five lenses to collect characteristics of the anterior segment, retina, and optic nerve in real time, being a valuable resource for ROP screening. Preterm newborns (PNEB) present anatomo-physiological characteristics that predispose them to the development of respiratory complications leading to the need of special care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) for monitoring vital functions and performing specialized procedures. The Thoracoabdominal Rebalancing (TOR) method promotes improvement in pulmonary ventilation and restores the balance of respiratory mechanics by normalizing muscle tone, playing an important role in the recovery of the newborn. The objective of this research was to verify the effects of the Thoracoabdominal Rebalancing Method on the cardiorespiratory parameters of premature newborns under non-invasive ventilation admitted to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This is a cross-sectional, observational and quantitative clinical study, in which the sample consisted of 6 PIs admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Values of Respiratory Rate (RR), Heart Rate (HR) and Oxygen Saturation (SpO2) were checked before, during and after the application of the TOR Method during a single visit to each newborn. The data were distributed in Microsoft Office Excel 2010 spreadsheets, where they were organized according to the established objectives, and later submitted to Friedman's test to measure significant changes between the analyzed values. According to the variables analyzed, it was found that the HR was statistically lower after 10 minutes when compared to during the procedure (p=0.030); the RR was statistically lower 10 minutes later when compared to minutes before the procedure (p=0.003); and Sp02 was statistically higher after 10 minutes when compared to 5 minutes earlier (p=0.023). It is concluded, then, that the TOR Method produced positive effects in relation to the cardiorespiratory parameters (HR, RR and SpO2) of premature newborns under Noninvasive Ventilation and did not cause harmful intercurrences to the hemodynamics of PIs. - Abstract
BACKGROUND: Currently, speech therapists in Colombia do not have standardized tests that allow them to clearly establish the right time to start oral feeding of the newborn; For this reason, the international test POFRAS (Preterm Oral Feeding Readiness Assessment Scale), could be of great help in this evaluation process if it is validated in this country. OBJECTIVE: To establish the interobserver reliability of the POFRAS instrument, in the evaluation of the initiation of oral feeding in premature infants, in the NICU of Hospital San José. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative descriptive concordance study, in which 2 speech therapists participated from the San José de Popayán Hospital participated, evaluating twenty premature infants, selected by non-probabilistic sampling, with prior establishment of ethical aspects. RESULTS: An agreement proportion of 74% was obtained, indicating a good coincidence between the two evaluators in the rating of the items in premature infants. To determine concordance, weighted Kappa was used in each item; it was found in the evaluation of behavioral organization, the general tone with value k=0, 76, state of consciousness k=0, 53 and global posture k=0, 51, with an excellent and good concordance. In oral reflexes, sucking reflex was k=0, 74, rooting reflex k=0, 59, bite k=0, 55 and gag k=0, 57; here the concordance was good. In non-nutritive sucking and in signs of stress, the kappa values showed good agreement. In oral posture, a concordance with values regular was observed. The Kappa Coefficient of the instrument was k=0, 52 classified as "good" concordance. CONCLUSION: The POFRAS test has a "good" reliability to establish the initiation of oral feeding in the neonatal population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluated the effect of prematurity and the infant's temperament on the mother-infant behaviors in the Face-to-Face Still-Face Paradigm (FFSF). The study included 75 mothers and their infants (37 preterm and 38 term) between three and four months of age (corrected age for preterm infants). The mothers responded to a perception scale of the infants' temperament and the dyads were observed in a structured condition (FFSF). The FFSF Paradigm, divided into three episodes, made it possible to analyze the behaviors of: Positive Social Orientation, Negative Social Orientation and Self-comfort. The averages recorded for these categories were analyzed in a Multivariate ANOVA (factors: prematurity and temperament). Temperament had more effect on maternal and infant behaviors, suggesting that this factor may influence mother-infant interaction. The results can guide possible interventions with families. - Abstract
INTRODUCTION: A premature birth represents a nutritional emergency. An immediately available or standardized parenteral nutrition is an essential tool to offer an adequate nutritional input of macro and micronutrients to this group of patients. In this article we resume and compare the nutritional components of standardized and personalized parenteral nutrition, and we report a clinical case where we successfully used the standardized parenteral nutrition within the first two hours of life. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30.5 gestational weeks premature female entered the neonatal intensive care unit. We initiated standardized parenteral nutrition within the first 2 hours of life through an umbilical venous catheter. She had an adequate nutritional evolution until week 42 of corrected age, where she presented weight localized in 10th percentile according to lntegrowth-21. The present work aims to review the usefulness of standardized parenteral nutrition in premature newborns. Its arrival in Mexico is recent, the case of a patient in which it was used with positive results is reported. CONCLUSIONS: Every neonatal unit should consider a premature birth as a nutritional emergency, where a prompt start of parenteral nutrition is crucial for maintaining an optimal nutrition and growth. Standardized parenteral nutrition is until now the best way for the premature newborn to receive the required nutritional requirement early after birth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the neuropsychological characteristics of development in the first year of premature infants compared to full term infants through a literature review methodology. The search was conducted in the MEDLINE, APAPsycNet, Science Direct and SciELO databases, from 2004 to 2021, with the keyword "neuropsychology" combined with "infant premature" and "premature birth". Only four studies met the inclusion criteria, which were: samples of at least ten premature infants, compared to full-term infants up to one year of age; studies with at least a cognitive or language, motor and socio-emotional testing. The studies found reported the following results: a higher reactivity for anger in the premature, but lower reactivity for fear and play; motor impairment, difference in cognitive development index (considering chronological age), as well as lower scores in audiovisual, cognitive and language performance. In this sense, the studies suggest that preterm infants present distinct impairments when compared to full-term infants. With few longitudinal studies, it is argued that further studies focusing on integral development are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aimed to survey national and international scientific literature on the impact and management of luminosity for premature newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. By searching the Virtual Health Library, 89 articles were selected, 15 of which constituted the final sample. The study showed that although there is a recognition that ambient light interferes with the sleep/rest pattern, negatively impacting the development of preterm infants, measures to minimize the effect of light are not valued or applied in practice. Factors such as physical structure, cost, unit design and re-adaptation of professional conduct are described as barriers to proper light management. On the other hand, the offer of cycled light using covers on the incubators; reduction of the direct light on the baby's eyes and the grouping of care have positive impact on this management. The importance of knowing the care of the nursing team to prevent injury in neonates occurs due to the high risk of these patients developing skin lesions, with high rates of incidence and prevalence. To know the scientific evidence available in the literature on the main measures to prevent skin lesions in premature newborns. Integrative review of national and international literature. The collection was carried out in the databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature Health Sciences, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System online, Public Medline and the virtual libraries Scientific Electronic Library Online. With descriptors: Skin, Prevention, Premature, Premature newborn. The sample consisted of 8 articles, after analysis of the selection. The knowledge of nursing professionals, who work in the care of preterm infants, about the measures to prevent skin injuries is essential to identify risk factors and promote safe care. - Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical outcome of a newborn (NB) with unilateral pulmonary interstitial emphysema (PID) who required selective ventilation of the contralateral lung. Case presentation: This is a 32-week gestation female newborn, who presented respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), requiring mechanical ventilation. On the second day of life, she presented left unilateral interstitial PID. Highfrequency oscillatory ventilation was used as treatment for this complication, as well as positioning of the newborn on the affected side, but there was no improvement. Subsequently, after selective ventilation of the contralateral lung was used for 48 hours total resolution of the emphysema was achivied. Conclusion: PID is a serious complication in newborns. The use of selective ventilation to the contralateral lung is a therapeutic alternative for its resolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infants who experience sensitive caregiving are at lower risk for numerous adverse outcomes. This is especially true for infants born preterm, leading them to be more susceptible to risks associated with poorer quality caregiving. Some research suggests that preterm and full‐term infants differ on temperament, which may contribute to these findings. This study aimed to investigate associations between infant temperament (negative emotionality, positive affectivity/surgency, and orienting/regulatory capacity) and maternal sensitivity among infants born preterm (M = 30.2 weeks) and full term. It was hypothesized that mothers of infants born preterm and mothers of infants with more difficult temperaments would display lower sensitivity, indicated by lower responsiveness to nondistress, lower positive regard, and higher intrusiveness. Videotaped play interactions and a measure of temperament (Infant Behavior Questionnaire) were coded for 18 preterm and 44 full‐term infants at 9 months (corrected) age. Results suggest that mothers of preterm and full‐term infants differed significantly in responding to their infants, but these results cannot be explained by infant temperament. Preterm status and sociodemographic risk emerged as correlates of maternal behavior, such that mothers of infants born preterm and mothers with greater sociodemographic risk displayed lower levels of maternal sensitivity. - Abstract
The objective of this study was evaluating the pain of premature newborns during a minimum handling protocol. Seven newborns from both genders participated in the study, all of whom were hospitalized in a Neonate Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and had an age from 3 to 27 days. There was a single observational evaluation carried out during the handling procedures at 8 a.m. The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) was filled in and the vital signs were collected, including heart and respiratory rates (HR and RR) and partial oxygen saturation (PaO2) presented in the monitor connected to the newborn. Data observed indicated signs of pain, with a statistical difference in the NIPS variables "facial expression" (Z=2.271, p=0.023), "movements in the extremities" (Z= 2.00, p=0.046), "state of arousal" (Z=2.236, p=0.025) and total score (Z=2.236, p=0.025), during their handling. Regarding their vital signs, there was a significant increase in heart rate (Z= 2.366 e p=0.018) during the intervention. The results allow one to infer that even with the minimum handling protocol there is pain, and it is important to be careful during procedures involving the newborn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this article is to conduct an integrative literature search, pointing out the gains obtained by implementing the kangaroo method in premature newborns, highlighting the nurse's performance and its relevance during this process. The method used was to perform a research of articles related to the theme, reading and analysis of the obtained data. With the kangaroo method of premature babies, they are more developed and, in less time, compared to those who do not receive this care. We concluded that the method studied has benefits in several areas of child development and because this method does not require complex infrastructure and is easy to apply, it is essential to implement it in treatment units for preterm infants. - Abstract
Objective: To determine the incidence and the clinical, bacteriological and cerebrospinal fluid characteristics of neonatal meningitis in Lima hospitals. Materials and methods: An observational, multicenter study was conducted in six hospitals in the city of Lima during 1 year of epidemiological surveillance. Results: The cumulative hospital incidence was 1.4 cases per 1000 live births. A total of 53 cases of neonatal meningitis were included, 34% (18/53) were early and 66% (35/53) late. The associated maternal factors were meconium-stained amniotic fluid and urinary tract infection. Insufficient prenatal checkups were found in 58.8% (30/51). The most associated neonatal factor was sepsis. The main symptoms were fever, irritability, hypoactivity and respiratory distress. Pleocytosis in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was significant, without predominance of polymorphonuclear lymphocytes (PMN), hypoglycorrhagia and proteinorrhagia. The most frequent pathogens isolated were Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. Conclusions: The hospital incidence of neonatal meningitis was 1.4 per 1000 live births, being ten times higher in preterm infants. Breathing difficulty was the most frequent symptom in the early stage, while fever and irritability in the late stage. CSF showed pleocytosis without predominance of PMN. The most frequent germs were Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. Ventriculitis and hydrocephalus were the most common neurological complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the structural ocular sequelae of retinopathy of prematurity in children at risk for the disease in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Methods: A prospective, cohort-type, observational study was conducted. Fifty-seven children at risk for this retinopathy, who were born in the public health system facilities, were referred for ophthalmic evaluation at a secondary eye hospital. Inclusion criteria were gestational age = 32 weeks and/or birth weight = 1500 g. Results: Eighteen (31.6%) children were diagnosed with any stage of retinopathy of prematurity during the study period, and four (7.0%) of them needed treatment. Structural ocular sequelae were identified in 3 of 56 children (5.3%), consisting of peripheral retinal detachment with macular dragging in 3 eyes of 3 children and macular involving retinal detachment in 2 eyes of 2 children. Associations between occurrence of retinopathy of prematurity and birth weight, gestational age at birth and days in oxygen were observed (p<0.05). Indication of treatment was associated with birth weight (p<0.05). Conclusion: Retinopathy of prematurity stands out as an important cause of avoidable blindness in Amazonas, affected 31.6 % of children at risk in the present paper, which in this same context, led to ocular strucutral sequelae in about 5.3% of these infants, either peripheral or macular involving retinal detachment. A local program for screening and treatment of the population at risk is necessary in order to avoid blindness from this disease, providing care to the public health system users that contemplates equality and universality of access. Objective: To determine maternal and fetal risk factors associated with the birth of late preterm infants in comparison to those born at term. Methods: A case-control study was carried out in a tertiary center for high-risk pregnancies. For the cases, the study enrolled post-partum mothers and their respective newborns with gestational ages equal or greater than 34 weeks and less than 37 weeks. As controls, the post-partum mothers and their newborns with gestational ages of 37 weeks or greater were selected. The sample was calculated with a ratio of two controls for each case, resulting in 423 patients. Association studies were performed using the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test and logistic regression analysis. Results: The variables associated with late prematurity were inadequate prenatal (Odds Ratio [OR] 1.23; confidence interval of 95% [95%CI] 1.12-1.34; p≤0.001), premature rupture of membranes (OR 4.98; 95%CI 2.66-9.31; p≤0.001), length of hospital stay ≥24 hours until birth (OR 0.18; 95%CI 0.06-0.52; p<0.001), cesarean section (OR 2.74; 95%CI 1.69-4.44; p≤0.001) and small for gestational age newborn (OR 3.02; 95%CI 1.805.05; p≤0.001). Conclusions: Inadequate prenatal care and membranes' premature rupture were found as factors associated with the late preterm birth. It is important to identify the factors that allow intervention with adequate prenatal care in order to reduce poor outcomes due to late prematurity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: to analyze a correlation between self-efficacy and social support of mothers of preterms in early postpartum. Methods: cross-sectional study, carried out with 120 mothers of preterm infants from a Maternity School, from June to September 2018. Sociodemographic, reproductive and scales were used to assess the Maternal Self-Efficacy and Social Support. A descriptive analysis was carried out and the MannWhitney Test, Kruskal Wallis Test and Spearman correlation were applied. Results: there was a positive correlation between self-efficacy, parity (p=0.017), years of schooling (p=0.017) and Social Support (p=0.002). An unexpected finding was a high self-efficacy among mothers up to eight years of schooling, in the countryside of the State and with low income. Conclusion: social support, in all dimensions: material, affective, emotional, information and social interaction, proven to be a predictor of maternal self-efficacy.

We evaluated the effect of prematurity and the infant’s temperament on the mother-infant behaviors in the Face-to-Face Still-Face Paradigm (FFSF). The study included 75 mothers and their infants (37 preterm and 38 term) between three and four months of age (corrected age for preterm infants). The mothers responded to a perception scale of the infants’ temperament and the dyads were observed in a structured condition (FFSF). Breast milk, in addition to being the best food for babies, contributes to a reduction of up to 13% in infant mortality. Among the strategies to intensify breast feeding and maintenance e of lactation is the extraction of human milk in a neonatal environment. With the pandemic, new obstacles emerged, such as the distancing of mothers in neonatal units, resulting in losses, such as the reduction in milk extraction at the bedside in the neonatal environment. The purpose of this article was to report the experience of strategies and actions that favor the maintenance of lactation in mothers of premature newborns, with emphasis on milk extraction at the bedside in neonatal units. This es an Experience Report that used the Arco de Maguerez methodology, in the neonatal units of a tertiary hospital, in Fortaleza/Ceará, from February to August 2022. Was based on strategies for maintaining lactation in mothers of premature newborns with emphasis on milk extraction at the bedside. The challenges of maintaining lactation in mothers of premature newborns stand out as interruption of milking at the bedside, absence of a defined protocol, lack of awareness of the team, overcrowding, difficulty in the mother’s free access due to the worsening of the pandemic, low adherence of professionals to training. From the identified aspects, Standard Operating Procedure and Milk Expression Flow were developed in a neonatal environment, meetings, training, and sensitization with the teams, also involving the multiprofessional residency. Good neonatal practices are still a challenge, seen more clearly in the pandemic. This experience made it possible to identify gaps. With the work, it was possible to identify gaps, develop strategies, intensify knowledge, and direct actions to improve neonatal care., O leite materno além de ser a melhor alimentação para bebês, contribui para redução de até 13% da mortalidade infantil.

Introduction: There are few studies on acute kidney injury (AKI) in preterm infants; currently, there are no criteria for its definition and management. Objective: To determine the incidence of AKI in preterm infants hospitalized in a neonatal care unit (NICU). material and methods: Descriptive cohort study of newborns weighing ≤ 1,500 grams admitted to the NICU of a university hospital in Bogotá, over a period of one year. All the patients were sampled serum creatinine at 24 and 72 hours of life. ARI was defined as an increase of creatinine ≥ 0.3 mg/mL or increased 150% of the initial value. Results: 53 patients were included. Eleven patients were excluded because they died before 72 hours after birth. Ten patients met the definition of ARI and correspond to an incidence of 23.8% (95% CI 11.7 to 34.6%). There were three cases that also presented oliguria. Conclusions: Our definition shows a high incidence of AKI in premature newborns. More studies are needed to confirm these findings and establish risk factors associated with AKI. The early years of life are central to child development. The aim of the study was to evaluate sensory and motor development in high-risk premature infants through ITSP and AIMS. The sample consisted of 48 premature infants who were born in the University Hospital of Western Paraná (HUOP). Divided into two groups of both sexes: the preterm group with normal motor performance (> 25%) (G1 - 24 infants) and the preterm group with suspect and abnormal motor performance (between 25 and 5% and < 5%, respectively) (G2-24 infants). Comparing ITSP scores, G2 showed significantly lower scores than G1 for low-register indicative behaviors (p <0.0001), sensory sensitivity (p <0.0001) and sensory aversion (p <0.0001). G1 remained in the ITU and ICU for less days when compared to G2, but they did not have significant relevance when compared to the ITSP and AIMS. It is important to evaluate the motor and sensory profile of preterm infants because the integrity of the sensory system is essential for the proper development of motor function, since motor skills are refined through sensory experiences. This study suggests that the ITSP is a useful, practical scale and assists in the early identification of sensory information processing problems and that, if not diagnosed and treated, can lead to life-long impairment. Objective: Identify the primary cause of the hospital admission and readmission of premature infants and evaluate the costs of the readmission between the years 2000 and 2011 in the Comunidade Foral de Navarra hospital in Pamplona, Spain. Methods: This is a descriptive, retrospective study involving analysis of 297 premature infants who were admitted to the neonatal Intensive Care Unit and were subsequently readmitted at another division of the aforementioned hospital, at least once, during the sixty days after discharge. Results: The majority of the cases studied (91.25%) were re-hospitalized only once, with an average stay of 4.61 days. Bronchiolitis and asthma were the most common cause for patient readmission. Conclusion: The author highlights the importance of parental presence during the child's hospitalization, as they can provide detailed information on the normal characteristics of their child and the potential health issues associated with prematurity. If the child presents any symptoms, the parents will know to seek medical help in the early stages, reducing the risk of complications and future hospitalizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT The aim of this quantitative and qualitative descriptive study was to consider the experience of the mothers of premature newborns hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews of 20 mothers at a public maternity facility in João Pessoa, Paraíba, in November and December 2010, and analyzed in the light of the collective subject discourse technique. Results showed that being a mother of a newborn premature is a very difficult experience, which leaves mothers emotionally fragile, afraid of losing their child, but recognizing the need for treatment. Accordingly, bonding and touch between mother and child are important to strengthen affection, attachment and acceptance. When they realize they can provide care for their child, even though hospitalized, they become more confident and able to overcome difficulties and fears.

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of blood products, especilly red blood cells, is one of the most common interventions in daily medical practice and in neonatal units the target population of this intervention is greater than that of other premature risks and with low birth weight. OBJECTIVE: This review will be to generate the most important aspects of the use of erythrocyte package in the neonatal population and the available evidence in this regard. DESCRIPTION: Transfusions of blood products are multiple, especially in the neonatal population, among which include: necrotizing enterocolitis, retinopathy of prematurity, intraventricular hemorrhage, chronic lung disease, among others, so the decision to perform this procedure should be taken considering the indications and possible complications. CONCLUSIONS: New protocols have been developed to minimize the risks associated with this procedure, among which the use of single-donor aliquots is highlighted, to reduce the complications of incompatibility. - Abstract
The child's motor development is the result of biological influences as well as the physical and social environments and living. This interaction can encourage or limit the motor skills. The aim was to investigate the influence of cultural and socioeconomic differences of two Brazilian regions have on the motor development of infants preterm in the first year of life. Cross-sectional study comparison groups. The study included 429 premature infants of both sexes, selected in two Brazilian states and divided into two samples: babies born in Rio Grande do Sul (Southern Brazil) and babies born to Goiás (Midwest of Brazil). The development of babies was assessed by Alberta Infant Motor Scale in newborn age (RN) to 12 months and the results were compared according to age groups: newborn to 6 months and 7-12 months of chronological age corrected. As for the characterization of samples, significant differences were found between the groups only in the variables birth weight, head circumference, length of stay, maternal age and family income, with the southern group in Brazil featuring superior result. In relation to engine performance, the groups presented differences only in the age group of newborn to 6 months, the babies of the Midwest featuring latest findings in the overall score and in prone and sitting positions. Infants of Brazil's Midwest region had more delayed motor development than babies of southern Brazil, which may have been influenced by lower results in neonatal variables of birth weight and head circumference. Objective: To determine whether fat content and energy value change in colostrum according to gestational age and fetal growth. Methods: Cross-sectional study with mothers of preterm and term infants born in a tertiary center in 2015-2016. Inclusion criteria: single pregnancy, absence of diabetes, chorioamnionitis and mastitis, no use of illicit drugs or alcohol, without fetal congenital malformation or infection. Four groups were formed according to gestational age and fetal growth: preterm infants small for gestational age (PT-SGA; n=33) and appropriate for gestational age (PT-AGA; n=60), term infants small for gestational age (T-SGA; n=59) and appropriate for gestational age (T-AGA; control, n=73). Colostrum was collected between 24-72 hours postpartum. Gestational and birth variables were analyzed. Outcome variables were: fat content in colostrum (evaluated by crematocrit method) and estimated energy value. Chi-square or Fisher exact tests, ANOVA, and multivariable linear regression were used for comparison among groups. Results: Mean gestational age was 34 weeks in preterm infants and 39 weeks in term neonates. Crematocrit did not differ between groups, with mean values varying between 3.3 and 4.0%; estimated energy value was 52 to 56 kcal/dL. Crematocrit =4% was more frequent in the T-SGA group. Only in the PT-SGA group there was a correlation between crematocrit and body mass index of the mother. Conclusions: The fat content and energy value of colostrum did not change according to gestational age or fetal growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
