Two bacterial strains, designated 2DFWM-2 T and FW10M-9 T , were isolated from gut of larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis grown at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Wanju-gun, South Korea. 16S rRNA and rpoB gene sequences showed that strain 2DFWM-2 T formed a separate branch with Lactococcus allomyrinae 1JSPR-7 T in the genus Lactococcus, adjacent to a group of Lactococcus lactis subspecies. ANI and dDDH values between 2DFWM-2 T and Lactococcus allomyrinae 1JSPR-7 T were 93.30% and 53.20%, respectively. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain FW10M-9 T was classified into the genus Xylanimonas revealing 96.9-98.5% sequence similarities with the Xylanimonas species. The ANI values of strain FW10M-9 T with the closely species Xylanimonas pachnodae NBRC 107786 T , Xylanimonas allomyrinae 2JSPR-7 T , Isoptericola variabilis JCM 11754 T and Xylanimonas cellulosilytica DSM 15894 T was 81.5%, 81.2%, 81.0% and 84.1%, respectively, and the dDDH values estimated by GGDC was 24.3%, 24.3%, 29.3% and 28.1%, respectively. On the basis of the phenotypic and genotypic data, it is proposed that strain 2DFWM-2 T represents a novel species of the genus Lactococcus, for which the name Lactococcus protaetiae sp. nov. is proposed, and the type strain is 2DFWM-2 T (= KACC 19320 T  = NBRC 113069 T ). And, strain FW10M-9 T represents a novel species of the genus Xylanimonas, for which the name Xylanimonas protaetiae sp. nov. is proposed, and the type strain is FW10M-9 T (= KACC 19331 T  = NBRC 113053 T ).

The Lactobacillus genus is widely used for fermentation of plant materials and dairy products. These species are typically found in highly specialized environments, with the bee gut serving as one of the niche locations in which Lactobacillus is detected. Lactobacillus species isolated from the bee gut and bee-related habitats were phylogenetically classified into three distinct groups, Lactobacillus kunkeei, Firm-4, and Firm-5. The L. kunkeei group was clearly differentiated from other members of the Lactobacillus buchneri group isolated from non-bee habitats. In comparison with non-bee members of the L. buchneri group, three bee-symbiotic Lactobacillus groups had a small-sized genome with low G + C content and showed a sharp reduction in the number of genes involved in energy production, carbohydrate transport and metabolism, and amino acid transport and metabolism. In addition, all three groups lacked the mutY gene, which encodes A/G-specific adenine glycosylase. The phylogenetic dendrogram based on the presence or absence of 1,199 functional genes indicated that these bee-symbiotic groups experienced convergent evolution. The occurrence of convergent evolution is thought to stem from the three bee-symbiotic groups sharing a similar habitat, i.e., the bee gut. The causative factor underlying genomic reduction was postulated to be mutY, which was absent in all three groups. Here, a novel strain, BHWM-4 T , isolated from the gut of Bombus ignites was studied using polyphasic taxonomy and classified as a new member of the L. kunkeei group. The strain was Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, and rod-shaped. The 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence and genome analysis revealed that strain BHWM-4 T was clustered into the L. kunkeei group, forming a compact cluster with L. kunkeei and Lactobacillus apinorum. Biochemical, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic data of strain BHWM-4 T supports the proposal of a novel species, Lactobacillus bombintestini sp. nov., whose type strain is BHWM-4 T (= KACC 19317 = NBRC 113067 T ).

A Gram-stain-positive, strictly aerobic, polar flagellated, short rod-shaped bacterium, designated DFW100M-13 T , was isolated from gut of the larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis collected from Wanju-gun, South Korea. The growth range of NaCl concentration was 0-3 % (w/v) (optimally 0 % (w/v)), the temperature range for growth was 10-40 °C (optimally 28-30 °C), and the pH range for growth was pH 6.0-9.0 (optimally pH 7.0-8.0). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DFW100M-13 T had a high sequence similarity to members of the genus Microbacterium , having the highest similarity with Microbacterium luticocti DSM 19459 T (97.7 %), Microbacterium rhizosphaerae CHO1 T (97.1 %), and Microbacterium immunditiarum SK 18 T (97.0 %), and formed a distinct lineage with Microbacterium luticocti DSM 19459 T within the genus Microbacterium . A phylogenetic tree based on house-keeping genes also showed the result similar to the 16S rRNA gene-based tree. The main respiratory quinone (>10 %) was MK-11, MK-12 and MK-10, and the predominant cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso -C 16 : 0 , anteiso -C 17 : 0 and anteiso -C 15 : 0 . The polar lipids were composed of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an inidentified glycolipid and an unidnetified lipid. The peptidoglycan type was supposed to be the B2 ß with amino acids d-alanine, d-glutamic acid, glycine, l-homoserine and d-ornithine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 68.0 mol%. Based on the polyphasic taxonomic data, strain DFW100M-13 T is considered to represent a novel species, for which the name Microbacterium protaetiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DFW100M-13 T (=KACC 19323 T =NBRC 113120 T ).

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, leaf-associated bacterium, designated JS23 T , was isolated from surface-sterilized leaf tissue of an oil palm grown in Singapore and was investigated by polyphasic taxonomy. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and 180 conserved genes in the genome of several members of Burkholderiaceae revealed that strain JS23 T formed a distinct evolutionary lineage independent of other taxa within the family Burkholderiaceae . The predominant ubiquinone was Q-8. The primary polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, and an unidentified aminophospholipid. The major fatty acids were C 16 : 0 , summed feature 3 (C 16 : 1  ω 7 c /C 16 : 1  ω 6 c ) and summed feature 8 (C 18 : 1  ω 7 c /C 18 : 1  ω 6 c ). The size of the genome is 5.36 Mbp with a DNA G+C content of 66.2 mol%. Genomic relatedness measurements such as average nucleotide identity, genome-to-genome distance and digital DNA-DNA hybridization clearly distinguished strain JS23 T from the closely related genera Burkholderia , Caballeronia , Mycetohabitans , Mycoavidus , Pandoraea , Paraburkholderia , Robbsia and Trinickia . Furthermore, average amino acid identity values and the percentages of conserved proteins, 56.0-68.4 and 28.2-45.5, respectively, were well below threshold values for genus delineation and supported the assignment of JS23 T to a novel genus. On the basis of the phylogenetic, biochemical, chemotaxonomic and phylogenomic evidence, strain JS23 T is proposed to represent a novel species of a new genus within the family Burkholderiaceae , for which the name Chitinasiproducens palmae gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed with the type strain of JS23 T (= DSM 27307 T =KACC 17592 T ).

A bacterium that was Gram-staining-positive, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, rod- or filamentous-shaped, designated as strain 2JSPR-7 T , was isolated from a gut of larvae of Allomyrina dichotoma which were raised at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Wanju-gun, Republic of Korea. 2JSPR-7 T had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Xylanibacterium ulmi XIL08 T (98.1 %), Xylanimicrobium pachnodae NBRC 107786 T (97.8 %) and Xylanimonas cellulosilytica DSM 15894 T (97.5 %). Optimum growth conditions were at 28-30 °C, pH 7-8 and 0 % salt concentration. The cellular fatty acids mainly consisted of anteiso-C 15 : 0 , C 14 : 0 and C 16 : 0 . The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, four unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified glycophospholipids. The major menaquinones were MK-8(H 4 ) and MK-9(H 4 ). The peptidoglycan structure was suggested to be the type A3 α (A11.14) l-Lys-l-Ser with the presence of d-Ala, l-Ala, d-Glu, l-Ser and l-Lys. Whole cell sugars were rhamnose, ribose and glucose. The DNA G+C content was 72.7 mol%. We encountered difficulty in selecting a suitable genus to accommodate strain 2JSPR-7 T from any of the genera Xylanimonas , Xylanimicrobium and Xylanibacterium based on the polyphasic approach including phylogenetic and phenotypic characterization. Therefore, it is proposed to combine the genera Xylanimicrobium and Xylanibacterium with the genus Xylanimonas considering the priority of publication and to classify strain 2JSPR-7 T in the genus as Xylanimonas allomyrinae sp. nov. The type strain of the novel species is 2JSPR-7 T (=KACC 19330 T =NBRC 113052 T ). In addition, the description of the genus Xylanimonas is emended, and Xylanibacterium ulmi and Xylanimicrobium pachnodae are reclassified as Xylanimonas ulmi comb. nov. and Xylanimonas pachnodae comb. nov., respectively.

A novel strain S29 T with high nitrogen fixing ability was isolated from surface-sterilized leaf tissues of oil palm ( Elaeis guineensis ) growing in Science Park II, Singapore. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene analysis and multilocus sequence typing with the rpoB, gyrB, infB and atpD genes, strain S29 T was a member of the genus Phytobacter , with Phytobacter ursingii ATCC 27989 T and Phytobacter diazotrophicus LS 8 T as its closest relatives. Unique biochemical features that differentiated strain S29 T from its closest relatives were the ability to utilize melibiose, α -cyclodextrin, glycogen, adonital, d-arabitol, m -inositol and xylitol. The major fatty acids were C 14 : 0 , C 16 : 0 , C 17 : 0 , C 16 : 1 ω 5c and summed feature 2 containing C 16 : 1 ω 7c and/or C 16 : 1 ω 6c. The polar fatty acid profile consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified aminophospholipid and aminolipids. The draft genome of strain S29 T comprised 5, 284, 330 bp with a G + C content of 52.6 %. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain S29 T and the phylogenetically related Enterobacterales species were lower than 95 % and 70 %, respectively. Thus, the polyphasic evidences generated through the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic methods confirmed that strain S29 T represents a novel species of the genus Phytobacter , for which we propose the name Phytobacter palmae sp. nov. with the type strain of S29 T (=DSM 27342 T =KACC 17598 T ).

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, endospore-forming and motile bacterium with peritrichous flagella was isolated from a gut sample of the larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Wanju-gun, Republic of Korea. Growth was observed at 15-50 °C (optimum, 28-37 °C), pH 6.0-8.0 (pH 7.0) and only without NaCl. 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons indicated that strain FW100M-2 T had the highest similarity to type strains of Paenibacillus thailandensis S3-4A T (96.8 %) and Paenibacillus agaridevorans DSM 1355 T (96.3 %), and had sequence similarity values less than 96.0 % to all other taxa. The phylogenetic tree showed that strain FW100M-2 T fell into the genus Paenibacillus , and formed a cluster with P. thailandensis S3-4A T independent from other Paenibacillus species. Antesio-C 15 : 0 , iso-C 16 : 0 and anteiso-C 17 : 0 were detected as the major fatty acids. The only isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. Polar lipids of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified aminophospholipid, two unidentified phospholipids and an unidentified lipid were present. The meso -diaminopimelic acid was present in the cell-wall peptidoglycan. The genomic DNA G+C content was 51.5 mol%. Hence, strain FW100M-2 T represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus , for which the name Paenibacillus protaetiae sp. nov. is proposed, with FW100M-2 T (=KACC 19327 T =NBRC 113071 T ) as the type strain.

A bacterial strain, designated 2DFW10M-5 T , was isolated from gut of the larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis collected in the Republic of Korea. Cells of the strain were Gram-stain-positive, non-motile and rod-shaped. The strain grew at the range of 10-37 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C) and pH 4.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and tolerated up to 1 % NaCl (w/v; optimum, 0 %) on Reasoner's 2A medium. It was catalase-positive and oxidase-negative. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain 2DFW10M-5 T showed the highest similarity to Gryllotalpicola daejeonensis RU-04 T (98.4 %), Gryllotalpicola soli KIS12-7 T (98.2 %), Gryllotalpicola kribbensis PU-02 T (97.5 %), Gryllotalpicola koreensis RU-16 T (97.4 %) and Gryllotalpicola reticulitermitis TS-56 T (97.2 %). The phylogenetic tree based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain 2DFW10M-5 T fell into the radius of the genus Gryllotalpicola . The predominant fatty acid was ω-cyclohexyl-C 17:0 . The polar lipids of strain 2DFW10M-5 T were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid and two unidentified lipids. The detected isoprenoid quinones were MK-11 (61.0 %), MK-10 (33.7 %) and MK-12 (5.3 %). The peptidoglycan contained d- and l-alanine, d-glutamic acid, glycine, l-serine and d-lysine with l-lysine as the diamino acid. The DNA G+C content calculated from the genome sequence of strain 2DFW10M-5 T was 69.2 mol%. On the basis of its genomic, phylogenetic and phenotypic properties and distinctiveness, strain 2DFW10M-5 T represents a novel species of the genus Gryllotalpicola , for which the name Gryllotalpicola protaetiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 2DFW10M-5 T (=KACC 19316 T =NBRC 113049 T ).

An actinobacterial strain, designated FW100M-8 T , was isolated from a gut sample of larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Wanju-gun, South Korea. Cells were Gram-stain-positive, microaerophilic to aerobic, non-spore forming and non-motile. It grew at pH 7.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 8.0), at 15-35 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and 0-3.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). According to the 16S rRNA gene analysis, strain FW100M-8 T shared the highest sequence similarity with Agromyces mediolanus DSM 20152 T (98.4 %), Agromyces ulmi XIL01 T (98.3 %), Agromyces indicus NIO-1018 T (98.3 %), Agromyces soli MJ21 T (98.3 %), and Agromyces arachidis AK-1 T (97.9 %). Phylogenetic trees showed that strain FW100M-8 T fell into the lineage of the genus Agromyces . The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid and an unidentified lipid. The menaquinones of strain FW100M-8 T were MK-12 (46 %), MK-11 (36 %), MK-10 (14 %) and MK-13 (4 %). The major fatty acids were anteiso-C 15 : 0 , anteiso-C 17 : 0 and iso-C 16 : 0 . The peptidoglycan type was supposed to be the type B1, comprising d-Ala, d-Glu, Gly and l-A 2 bu. The G+C content of the genomic DNA is 70.5 mol%. On the basis of the genotypic and phenotypic data, we conclude that strain FW100M-8 T represents a novel species of the genus Agromyces , for which the name Agromyces protaetiae sp. nov. is proposed with strain FW100M-8 T (=KACC 19308 T =NBRC 113048 T ) as the type strain.

Strain 1JSPR-7 T , a facultatively anaerobic bacterium isolated from the gut of larvae of Allomyrina dichotoma raised in Wanju-gun, Republic of Korea, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Comparative analysis of 16S rRNA gene and rpoB gene sequences showed that strain 1JSPR-7 T fell within the genus Lactococcus , forming a compact cluster with the type strain of four subspecies of Lactococcus lactis and Lactococcus taiwanensis . The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain 1JSPR-7 T revealed the highest homology with L. lactis subsp. lactis JCM 5805 T (97.3 %) and L. lactis subsp. hordniae NBRC 100931 T (97.1 %), and the rpoB gene sequence showed the highest similarity to L. lactis subsp. cremoris DSM 20069 T (91.4 %) and L. lactis subsp. tructae L105 T (91.4 %). The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values indicated that strain 1JSPR-7 T was a novel species of the genus Lacococcus . The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were summed feature 7 (unknown 18.846, C 19 : 1 ω6 c and/or C 19 : 0 cyclo ω10 c ), C 16 : 0 and C 14 : 0 , and the predominant menaquinone was MK-8 with MK-7 as a minor one. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified phospholipid and three unidentified glycolipids with diphosphatidylglycerol as the major one. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A4 α type with an interpeptide bridge comprising l-Lys-d-Asp. The DNA G+C content based on the whole genome sequences was 37.4 mol%. Based on the data obtained, strain 1JSPR-7 T represents a novel species of the genus Lactococcus , for which the name Lactococcusallomyrinae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 1JSPR-7 T (=KACC 19319 T =NBRC 113068 T ).

A taxonomic study of a Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming, catalase-negative bacterium, isolated from the gut of an insect, Cryptocercus kyebangensis collected from the mountainous area of Seoraksan, Yangyang-gun, Republic of Korea, was conducted. Its 16S rRNA gene sequence showed high similarity values to Weissella ghanensis LMG 24286 T (95.9 %), Weissella beninensis 2L24P13 T (95.9 %), Weissella fabalis M75 T (95.7 %) and Weissella fabaria 257 T (95.7 %). The phylogenetic tree indicated that the novel organism formed a cluster with W. ghanensis LMG 24286 T , W. beninensis 2L24P13 T , W. fabalis M75 T and W. fabaria 257 T . The G+C content was 41.1 mol% on the basis of the whole-genome sequence. Polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified aminophospholipids, one unidentified phospholipid and four unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were C 18 : 1 ω 9 c , C 16 : 0 , C 14 : 0 , summed feature 8 (C 18 : 1 ω7 c and/or C 18 : 1 ω6 c ) and summed feature 8 (C 16 : 1 ω 7 c and/or C 16 : 1 ω 6 c ). The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of A4 α type with the interpeptide bridge of Gly-d-Glu. Based on these results, strain 26KH-42 T could be classified as a novel species of the genus Weissella , for which the name Weissellacryptocerci sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 26KH-42 T (=KACC 18423 T =NBRC 113066 T ).

RecQ, which encodes a DNA helicase, was selected in searching for a marker gene of Bacillus subtilis and related species via genome mining. RecQ gene sequence similarity of type strains among Bacillus species used in this study ranged from 66.2% to 96.6%, whereas orthologous average nucleotide identity ranged from 72.6% to 95.8%. According to the phylogenetic tree based on recQ sequences, each type strain of all Bacillus species or subspecies used in this study was placed in a unique taxonomic position. Four B. subtilis subspecies, Bacillus tequilensis and Bacillus vallismortis were grouped in one cluster (cluster A). Strains of B. subtilis subsp. subtilis were classified into A1 cluster, and divided into subgroups. Isolates from Natto, Japanese fermented bean food, were classified into one subgroup, whereas those from Cheonggukjang, Korean fermented bean food, were divided into several subgroups within A1. Type strains of Bacillus halotolerans and Bacillus mojavensis were grouped into another cluster (cluster B), related to cluster A. Bacillus siamensis, Bacillus velezensis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens were grouped into an independent cluster (cluster E). Sequencing of recQ was useful for the classification or differentiation of B. subtilis and closely related species. An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, polar-flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium, designated as SC2-7 T , was isolated from the dust collector at a pig farm located in Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea. Growth occurred at 10-37 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum, 7.0-8.0) and in the presence of 0-3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %) on Reasoner's 2A medium. The phylogenetic tree based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SC2-7 T was a member of the family Comamonadaceae, forming a robust cluster with the genera Alicycliphilus, Oryzisolibacter and Melaminivora. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of strain SC2-7 T showed the highest sequence similarities to Alicycliphilus denitrificans K601 T (97.2 %), Oryzisolibacter propanilivorax EPL6 T (97.0 %), Melaminivora alkalimesophila CY1 T (96.9 %), Diaphorobacter polyhydroxybutyrativorans SL-205 T (96.6 %), Diaphorobacter nitroreducens NA10B T (96.6 %) and Melaminivora jejuensis KBB12 T (96.5 %). The tree based on the gyrA gene sequences also showed that strain SC2-7 T fell into a phylogenetic position similar to that based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences. The polar lipids present were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified aminolipid and an unidentified phospholipid. The predominant quinone was ubiquione-8. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (including C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), C16 : 0 and summed feature 8 (including C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c). The genomic DNA G+C content was 69.1 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data presented here, strain SC2-7 T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Pulveribacter suum gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain of Pulveribacter suum is SC2-7 T (=KACC 19309 T =NBRC 113102 T ).

A Gram-stain-positive, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming, non-motile bacterium, designated strain 2DFWR-13 T , was isolated from gut of the larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, in the Republic of Korea. Strain 2DFWR-13 T showed high sequence similarities to Lysinimonas kribbensis MSL-13 T (97.7 %), Homoserinibacter gongjuensis 5GH26-15 T (97.2 %), Microbacterium deminutum KV-483 T (97.1 %) and Herbiconiux ginsengi CGMCC 4.3491 T (97.1 %). The predominant fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The major menaquinones were MK-13 and MK-12. The peptidoglycan type was type B2 with the diagnostic amino acid d-DAB. The N-acyl type of the murein was glycolyl. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid and an unidentified lipid. The DNA G+C content was 71.5 mol%. Based on its phylogenetic distinctiveness and distinguishing phenotypic characteristics, we conclude that strain 2DFWR-13 T represents a novel genus and species of the family Microbacteriaceae, for which the name Protaetiibacter intestinalis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Protaetiibacter intestinalis is 2DFWR-13 T (=KACC 19321 T =NBRC 113050 T ). In addition, an emended description of the genus LysinimonasJang et al. 2013 and the reclassification of Lysinimonas kribbensisJang et al. 2013 as Pseudolysinimonas kribbensis gen. nov., comb. nov. are proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, aerobic bacterium, designated M2T2B2 T , was isolated from fermented bovine products in Suwon, Republic of Korea. The strain displayed growth at 15-45 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-10.0 (pH 7.0) and 0-2 % (w/v) NaCl (0 %). Colonies were light pink-coloured, round and convex. The cells were positive for oxidase and weakly positive for catalase. The major fatty acids in whole cells of strain M2T2B2 T were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c), followed by summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c/C16 : 1ω6c), summed feature 2 (C12 : 0 aldehyde/unidentified 10.928/C14 : 0 3-OH/iso-C16 : 1 I), C16 : 0, C18 : 1 2-OH, C16 : 0 3-OH and C17 : 1ω6c. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, and three unidentified aminolipids. Ubiquinone 10 was the predominant ubiquinone. The DNA G+C content was 68.0 mol%. The strain could fix atmospheric nitrogen, which was evaluated by the acetylene reduction assay. Further, whole genome sequence analysis revealed the presence of a nif gene cluster. Strain M2T2B2 T showed the highest 16S rRNA, rpoD and nifH gene sequence similarity to members of the genus Azospirillum, and showed 97.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Azospirillum oryzae COC8 T . The phenotypic, phylogenetic and genomic analyses support the proposal of strain M2T2B2 T as being a novel species of the genus Azospirillum, for which the name Azospirillumramasamyi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M2T2B2 T (=KACC 14063 T =NBRC 106460 T ).

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, coccoid- or short rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated SC2-6 T , was isolated from a dust collector of a pig farm located in Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea. Strain SC2-6 T grew within the ranges of 10-37 °C (28-30 °C, optimally), pH 6.0-10.0 (pH 7.0-8.0, optimally) and 0-3% NaCl (w/v). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of strain SC2-6 T showed the highest values to Paracoccus kondratievae GBT (96.3%), Paracoccus denitrificans DSM 413 T (96.3%) and Paracoccus sanguinis 5503 T (96.1%). The phylogenetic tree based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SC2-6 T belonged to the genus Paracoccus and clustered with Paracoccus pacificus F14 T . The phylogenetic tree based on the rpoD gene sequences also demonstrated that strain SC2-6 T fell into the clade of the genus Paracoccus. The DNA G+C content was 66.9 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 and the major fatty acids (> 10% of the total fatty acids) were summed feature 8 (comprising C18 : 1 ω6c and/or C18 : 1 ω7c). The polar lipids were composed of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified glycolipid, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genomic data, strain SC2-6 T was classified in the genus Paracoccus as a member of a novel species, for which the name Paracoccus suum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SC2-6 T (=KACC 19328 T =NBRC 113110 T ).

A rod-shaped, Gram-stain-positive, non-flagellated, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated SYF10-1a T , was isolated from Nuruk, a Korean traditional fermentation starter. It grew at 4-40 °C (optimum 37 °C), at pH 3.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0-5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain SYF10-1a T belonged to the genus Lactobacillus and showed the highest sequence similarity of 98.7 % to Lactobacillus crustorum LMG 23699 T . A comparison of two housekeeping genes, pheS and rpoA, supported the suggestion that strain SYF10-1a T fell within the radius of the genus Lactobacillus, but was clearly separated from its closest related species. The average nucleotide identity value and digital DNA-DNA hybridization value between strain SYF10-1a T and the most closely related species,L. crustorum LMG 23699 T , were 80.5 and 33.3 %, respectively. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C18 : 1ω9c, C18 : 1ω7c and summed feature 3 (including iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c). Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified glycolipids. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of the A4α type with an interpeptide bridge comprising l-Lys-d-Asp. The DNA G+C content was 34.2 mol%. On the basis of this taxonomic study, strain SYF10-1a T represents a novel species within the genus Lactobacillus, for which the name Lactobacillus nuruki sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SYF10-1a T (=KACC 18726 T =NBRC 112011 T ).

A Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile, short-rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated KADR8-3 T , isolated from Andong sikhye in Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. On the basis of morphological, genetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, it was determined to belong to the genus Ottowia. The phylogenetic similarity based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated the strain formed a clade with Ottowia beijingensis GCS-AN-3 T , Ottowia thiooxydans DSM 14619 T , Ottowia pentelensis RB3-7 T and 'Ottowia shaoguanensis' J5-66 T , showing the highest similarity to O. beijingensis GCS-AN-3 T (96.3 %). The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω6c and/or C18 : 1ω7c). The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-8. The polar lipids present were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 66.80 mol%. These results supported that strain KADR8-3 T was clearly distinguishable from its closely related species and represents a novel species of the genus Ottowia, for which the name Ottowia oryzae is proposed. The type strain is KADR8-3 T (=KACC 19325 T =NBRC 113109 T ).

A novel bacterial strain, S-12 T , of a member of the genus Phreatobacterwas isolated from a cathode of a microbial fuel cell from Suwon City, South Korea. Cells were Gram-staining-negative, aerobic, non-sporulating rods, motile by means of a polar flagellum, and formed white round colonies. The strain grew at the range of 10-40 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum 7.0-8.0) and 0-1 % NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed the relatedness of S-12 T to Phreatobacter stygiusYC6-17 T (98.2 %) and Phreatobacter oligotrophusPI_21 T (98.1 %). The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone Q-10. Polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and an unidentified lipid. The major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18 : 1ω7c and/or C18 : 1ω6c). The DNA G+C content was 69.3 mol%. On the basis of its differences from species of the genus Phreatobacter with validly published names, strain S-12 T is identified as representing a novel species, for which the proposed name is Phreatobactercathodiphilus sp. nov., with S-12 T as the type strain (=KACC 18497 T =JCM 31612 T ).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, polar-flagellated and rod-shaped bacterium, designated SC1-8 T , was isolated from a dust collector at a pig farm located in Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Republic of Korea. The strain grew within a temperature range of 4-37 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), at pH 7.0-9.0 (pH 7.0-8.0) and with 0-2 % (w/v) NaCl (0 %). Colonies were white-beige, circular and convex after 4 days of incubation on Reasoner's 2A agar. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain SC1-8 T was a member of the genus Simplicispira, revealing the highest sequence similarities to Simplicispira limi EMB325 T (97.9 %), Simplicispira psychrophila DSM 11588 T (97.4 %), Acidovorax defluvii BSB411 T (97.3 %), Simplicispira piscis RSG39 T (97.1 %) and Simplicispira metamorpha DSM 1837 T (97.0 %). The predominant respiratory quinone was Q-8. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamone, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were composed of C16 : 0 and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c). The DNA G+C content was 63.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic evidence, strain SC1-8 T is presented as a novel species, for which the name Simplicispira suum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SC1-8 T (=KACC 19329 T =NBRC 113111 T ).

Two yellow-pigmented isolates, S5-249 T and L9-754 T , originating from surface-sterilized plant tissues of Jatropha curcas L. (Jatropha) cultivars were characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Strains S5-249 T and L9-754 T had 16S rRNA genes sharing 94.2 % sequence similarity with each other and 91.6-97.2 % sequence similarity with those of other species in the genus Sphingomonas, suggesting that they represent two potentially novel species. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains S5-249 T and L9-754 T shared the highest similarity to that of Sphingomonas sanguinis NBRC 13937 T (96.1 and 97.2 %, respectively). The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains S5-249 T and L9-754 T were 66.9 and 68.5 mol%, respectively. The respiratory quinone was determined to be Q-10, and the major polyamine was homospermidine. Strains S5-249 T and L9-754 T contained summed feature 7 (comprising C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω9t and/or C18 : 1ω12t), C16 : 1, C14 : 0 2-OH and summed feature 4 (C16 : 1ω7t, iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and C16 : 1ω7c) as the major cellular fatty acids. The predominant polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and sphingoglycolipid. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between S. sanguinis NBRC 13937 T and the two type strains (S5-249 T and L9-754 T ) were 72.31 and 77.73 %, respectively. Digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) studies between the novel strains (S5-249 T and L9-754 T ) and other species of the genus Sphingomonas were well below the thresholds used to discriminate between bacterial species. The results of dDDH and physiological tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of the strains from each other as well as from the species of the genus Sphingomonas with validly published names. These data strongly support the classification of the strains as representatives of novel species, for which we propose the names Sphingomonas jatrophae sp. nov. (type strain S5-249 T =DSM 27345 T =KACC 17593 T ) and Sphingomonas carotinifaciens sp. nov. (type strain L9-754 T =DSM 27347 T =KACC 17595 T ).

The taxonomic position of a bacterial strain designated T16R-228 T , isolated from a rhizosphere soil sample of a tomato plant collected from a farm in Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea, was determined using a polyphasic approach. On the basis of morphological, genetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, it was determined to belong to the genus Paenibacillus. It was an aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, catalase-negative, oxidase-negative rod with peritrichous flagella. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, hydroxyl- phosphatidylethanolamine and one unidentified polar lipid. Menaquiones were MK-7. Predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C16 : 0. DNA G+C content was 56.8 mol%. The phylogenetic tree constructed based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed the strain formed a clade with P. mucilaginosus VKPM B-7519 T , P. edaphicus T7 T , P. ehimensis KCTC 3748 T , P. koreensis YC300 T , P. tianmuensis B27 T and P. elgii SD17 T , showing the highest sequence similarity with P. mucilaginosus VKPM B-7519 T (96.5 %). The polyphasic data supported that strain T16R-228 T was clearly distinguished from its closely related species and represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus for which the name Paenibacillus solanacearum is proposed. The type strain is T16R-228 T (=KACC 18654 T =NBRC 111896 T ).

A novel actinomycete strain, designated KIS14-16 T , was isolated from forest soil in Ongjin county, South Korea and characterized using polyphasic taxonomy. The cells are aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-flagellated and short rods. The strain grew in a temperature range of 4-33 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C) and pH range of 5.0-10.0 (optimum, 7.0) and in the presence of 0-5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). Comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KIS14-16 T is a member of the genus Arthrobacter exhibiting high sequence similarity with A. livingstonensis LI2 T (97.7 %), A. cryoconiti Cr6-08 T (97.6 %), A. psychrochitiniphilus GP3 T (97.4 %), A. stackebrandtii CCM 2783 T (97.1 %) and A. globiformis DSM 20124 T (96.3 %). DNA-DNA relatedness and phenotypic data distinguished strain KIS14-16 T from phylogenetically related type strains. The peptidoglycan type of strain KIS14-16 T was A3α, with an interpeptide bridge comprising l-Lys, l-Thr, Gly and l-Ala4. Strain KIS14-16 T contained a large amount of MK-9(H2) and relatively small amounts of MK-10(H2) and MK-8(H2). The main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and dimannosylglyceride. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was 63.9 mol%. On the basis of these phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain KIS14-16 T should be designated as a representative novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter silviterrae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KIS14-16 T (=KACC 17303 T =DSM 27180 T =NBRC 109660 T ).

A novel Gram-stain-negative bacterial strain, designated T16R-256 T , was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tomato plants grown in a greenhouse in Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea and characterized using polyphasic taxonomy. Cells were aerobic, non-flagellated and rod-shaped. Colonies were light yellow, convex and round. The strain grew in the temperature range of 15-37 °C (optimally at 28-30 °C) and pH range of 7.0-9.0 (optimally at 7.0-8.0) and in 4 % NaCl (w/v). A comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain T16R-256 T is a member of the genus Parapedobacter, exhibiting high sequence similarity with Parapedobacter pyrenivorans P-4 T (94.2 %), Parapedobacter indicus RK1 T (93.7 %), Parapedobacter koreensis Jip14 T (93.7 %), Parapedobacter luteus 4M29 T (93.6 %) and Parapedobacter soli DCY14 T (93.4 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingolipid, one aminophospholipid, two aminolipids and three unknown lipids. The major fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 2-OH/C16 : 1ω7c. Strain T16R-256 T contained MK-7 as the predominant respiratory quinone and homospermidine as the major polyamine. The genomic DNA G+C content of the type strain was 55.5 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain T16R-256 T should be designated as representative of a novel species of the genus Parapedobacter, for which the name Parapedobacter lycopersici sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is T16R-256 T (=KACC 18788 T =JCM 31602 T ).

An aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated, rod-shaped or filamentous bacterial strain, T16R-86T, was isolated from rhizosphere of a tomato plant collected from a farm on Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. It grew at the temperature range 10-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and pH range 6.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), and tolerated up to 2 % (w/v) NaCl. According to 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain T16R-86T shared the highest similarity with Chitinophaga barathri YLT18T (96.8 %) and C. pinensis DSM 2588T (96.7 %), forming a subcluster with C. barathri YLT18T, C. cymbidii R156-2T and C. niabensis JS13-10T in the phylogenetic tree. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, C16 : 1ω5c and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone MK-7. Polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, five unknown aminolipids, an unknown aminophospholipid, one unknown phospholipid and two unknown lipids. The DNA G+C content was 53.6 mol%. The phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that strain T16R-86T represents a novel species of the genus Chitinophaga, for which the name Chitinophaga rhizosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is T16R-86T (=KACC 18790T=JCM 31600T).

A yellow, aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped and non-flagellated bacterial strain, designated T16R-129T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of a tomato plant collected at a farm located on Buyeo-gun of Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. Strain T16R-129T grew at 15-40 °C and pH 7.0-9.0, and did not require NaCl for growth. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain T16R-129T clustered with members of the genus Terrimonas, and it shared highest similarity with Terrimonas arctica R9-86T (96.1 %), Terrimonas pekingensis QHT (95.9 %), Terrimonas lutea DYT (94.9 %), Terrimonas crocea M1-33108T (95.4 %) and Terrimonas rhizosphaerae CR94T (95.3 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. The polar lipids of strain T16R-129T were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, two unidentified aminophospholipids and five unidentified polar lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 46.0 mol%. On the basis of data from this polyphasic taxonomic study, strain T16R-129T represents a novel species in the genus Terrimonas, for which the name Terrimonas terrae sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is T16R-129T (=KACC 18787T=JCM 31603T).

One strain, designated 63MJ-1T, was isolated from fresh faeces of broad-winged katydids collected in Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, the Republic of Korea. The organism stained Gram-positive and was an aerobic, non-flagellated and short-rod-shaped bacterium. The organism grew in the range of 4-35 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C) and pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), and in the presence of 5 % NaCl (w/v), but not in media containing 7 % NaCl. According to the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain 63MJ-1T showed the highest sequence similarities with Nakamurella panacisegetis P4-7T (95.9 %), Nakamurella endophytica 2Q3S-4-2T (95.8 %) and Nakamurella multipartita DSM 44233T (95.7 %). Phylogenetic trees also indicated that strain 63MJ-1T formed one robust cluster with members of the genusNakamurella. The predominant quinone of strain 63MJ-1T was MK-8(H4). Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, an unidentified aminophospholipid and two unidentified lipids. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0. The peptidoglycan type was A1γ with meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic amino acid. The DNA G+C content was 64.6 mol%. Based on the phylogenetic, physiological and chemotaxonomic data, it was demonstrated that strain 63MJ-1T represents a novel species of the genus Nakamurella, for which the name Nakamurella intestinalis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 63MJ-1T (=KACC 18662T=NBRC 111844T).

A bacterial strain, designated T16E-198T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of tomato plant collected from a farm on Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. The strain was aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, non-flagellated and yellow-pigmented. Strain T16E-198T was mesophilic, catalase- and oxidase-positive and with flexirubin-type pigments. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain T16E-198T formed a lineage with Parafilimonas terrae 5GHs7-2T, sharing highest sequence similarity of 98.4 % with it and less than 93 % with all the other validly published species. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown aminophospholipid, five unknown aminolipids and five unknown lipids. The DNA G+C content was 41.2 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic data presented, strain T16E-198T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Parafilimonas, for which the name Parafilimonas rhizosphaerae sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is T16E-198T (=KACC 18786T=JCM 31601T).

A bacterial strain, designated T20R-70T, was isolated from tomato rhizosphere soil collected in Yecheon-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do in South Korea. Growth was observed within the ranges 10-40 °C (optimally at 28-30 °C), pH 7.0-8.0 (optimally at pH 7.0) and 0-1 % NaCl (optimally at 0 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence showed the highest similarities with those of Lysobacter hankyongensis KTCe-2T (98.7 %), Lysobacter brunescens KCTC 12130T (98.0 %), 'Lysobacter daecheongensis' Dae08 (97.2 %) and Lysobacter oligotrophicus 107-E2T (97.1 %). The phylogenetic tree showed that strain T20R-70T formed a clade with Lysobacterhankyongensis KTCe-2T and Lysobacterbrunescens KCTC 12130T. The dominant fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0, iso-C17 : 1ω9c and summed feature 3 (including iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or iso-C16 : 1ω7c). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. The major respiratory quinone was Q-8. DNA-DNA hybridization data revealed that strain T20R-70T had a hybridization value of 42±4 % (mean±sd) to the most closely related species of the genus Lysobacter. The DNA G+C content was 63.0 mol%. The physiological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic data allowed the discrimination of the new isolate from its phylogenetic relatives. Strain T20R-70T is thus considered to be a representative of a novel species of the genus Lysobacter, for which the name Lysobactersolanacearum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is T20R-70T (=KACC 18656T=NBRC 111881T).

A bacterial strain, designated 5GHs33-3T, was isolated from greenhouse soil collected from Yongin region, Gyeonggi province, South Korea. The strain was an aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, flagellated, rod-shaped bacterium. Strain 5GHs33-3T grew at 4-37 °C (optimally at 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-10.0 (optimally at pH 7.0) and with 0-7 % (w/v) NaCl (optimally with 0 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain 5GHs33-3T had high sequence similarity with Actinotalea suaedae EGI 60002T (98.4 %), Actinotalea ferrariae CF5-4T (96.4 %) and Actinotalea fermentans DSM 3133T (96.2 %), and less than 95.5 % sequence similarity against all the other species with validly published names. The phylogenetic tree revealed that strain 5GHs33-3T formed a robust independent monophyletic line with Actinotalea suaedae EGI 60002T. The predominant fatty acids of strain 5GHs33-3T were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The only quinone was MK-8(H4). Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, an unknown phosphoglycolipid and unknown lipids. The peptidoglycan type was A4β, with ornithine as the diagnostic diamino acid and an interpeptide bridge comprising l-Glu. The DNA G+C content is 69.0 mol%. Based on phylogenetic evidence and the results of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses, strain 5GHs33-3T represents a novel species of a new genus of the family Cellulomonadaceae, for which the name Pseudactinotalea terrae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is 5GHs33-3T (=KACC 16542T=NBRC 111006T). We also propose the reclassification of Actinotalea suaedae as Pseudactinotalea suaedae comb. nov. (type strain EGI 60002T=JCM 19624T=KACC 17839T=KCTC 29256T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, white bacterium, designated strain T16R-88T, was isolated from a rhizosphere soil sample collected in Buyeo-gun of Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. A phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain T16R-88T formed a lineage within the genus Pedobacter. It showed highest sequence similarities to Pedobacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 104T (97.4 %), Pedobacter nutrimenti J22T (97.2 %), Pedobacter nyackensis NWG-II14T (97.1 %), Pedobacter seoulensis THG-G12T (97.1 %) and Pedobacter panaciterrae Gsoil 042T (97.0 %). The predominant respiratory quinone was menaquinone MK-7. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 % of the total fatty acids) were summed feature 3 (iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingolipid, one unidentified aminophospholipid, three unidentified aminolipids, three unidentified lipids and one unidentified phospholipid. DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain T16R-88T and its most closely related species were below 70 %. The DNA G+C content was 35.6 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain T16R-88T represents a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter lycopersici sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is T16R-88T (=KACC 18652T=NBRC 111984T).

Strain 63MJ-2 T was isolated from the feces of broad-winged katydid (Pseudorhynchus japonicus) collected in Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain showed the highest sequence similarity with that of Siphonobacter aquaeclarae P2 T (96.1%) and had low similarities (below 86.3%) with those of other members of family 'Flexibacteraceae'. The strain 63MJ-2 T is a strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterium. The strain grew at 4-35°C (optimum, 25-30°C), pH of 5.0-9.0 (optimum, 6.0-7.0), and 0-2.0% (optimum, 1.0-2.0) (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C content of strain 63MJ-2 T was 43.5 mol%. The major fatty acids were C 16:1 ω5c (42.5%), iso-C 17:0 3-OH (18.7%), and summed feature 3 (iso-C 15:0 2-OH and/or C 16:1 ω7c, 18.0%). The major menaquinone was MK-7 and polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, six unknown aminolipids, and five unknown lipids. Based on the evidence from our polyphasic taxonomic study, we conclude that strain 63MJ-2 T should be classified as a novel species of the genus Siphonobacter, and propose the name Siphonobacter intestinalis sp. nov. The type strain is 63MJ-2 T (=KACC 18663 T =NBRC 111883 T ).

A bacterial strain, designated T16R-265T, was isolated from rhizosphere of tomato in Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. The strain was Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-flagellated and rod- or long-rod-shaped. It grew at the range of 10-40 °C (optimum 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum pH 7.0) and with 0-3 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0 %). 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain T16R-265T had the highest sequence similarity (98.0 %) with Flavitalea soli KIS20-3T and low sequence similarities of below 95 % with all other taxa. The phylogenetic tree revealed that the strain formed a robust monophyletic line with Flavitalea soli KIS20-3T separable from other clades. The predominant quinone of strain T16R-265T was MK-7, the polar lipids consisted of large amounts of phosphatidylethanolamine and an unknown lipid, and the major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. DNA-DNA hybridization values with Flavitalea soli KACC 17319T were below 70 %. The DNA G+C content of strain T16R-265T is 46.2 mol%. Based on phylogenetic evidence and the results of phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses, strain T16R-265T represents a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Pseudoflavitalea rhizosphaerae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is T16R-265T (=KACC 18655T=NBRC 111880T). We also propose the reclassification of Flavitalea soli as Pseudoflavitalea soli comb. nov. (type strain KIS20-3T=KACC 17319T=JCM 19937T).

A novel siderophore-producing actinomycete, designated PL19T, was isolated from the Scots-pine needle-like leaves collected from TNAU campus, Coimbatore, India. The isolate was chemoorganotrophic in nutrition and able to grow at 30 °C, and the optimum pH and NaCl facilitated the growth pH 6-11 and 0-8 % (w/v), respectively. The cells are filamentous and the mycelia formed are basically of wide and intricately branched substrate mycelium from which aerial mycelia arises, later gets differentiated into spores that are warty and arranged spirally. The 16S rRNA gene of strain PL19T was sequenced and was highly similar to the type strains of species of the genus Streptomyces, including Streptomyces barkulensis RC1831T (98.8 % pairwise similarity), Streptomyces fenghuangensis GIMN4.003T (98.2 %), Streptomyces nanhaiensis SCSIO 01248T (98.0 %), Streptomyces radiopugnans R97T (97.9 %), Streptomyces atacamensis C60T (97.8 %) and Streptomyces macrosporus NBRC 14749T (97.2 %), all of which were subjected to taxonomical characterization using a polyphasic approach. The strains showed unique carbon utilization patterns, and it possesses iso-C16 : 0 anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0 as a major cellular fatty acids. The cell-wall was dominated with ll-type diaminopimelic acid, and the menaquinone type was MK-9(H6, H8). These chemotaxonomic evidences placed strain PL19T within the genus Streptomyces. The determination of G+C ratio (69.5 mol%) and DNA-DNA hybridization values (13.4-31.8 % with the phylogenetically related species) helped in further hierarchical classification of strain PL19T. Based on morphological, physiological and chemotaxonomic data as well as DNA-DNA hybridization values, strain PL19T could be distinguished from the evolutionarily closest species currently available. All these collective data show that strain PL19T represents a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces pini sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PL19T (=NRRL B-24728T=ICMP 17783T).

A rod-shaped, yellow, Gram-stain-negative, non-flagellated, aerobic bacterium, designated 5516J-17T, was isolated from an air sample collected from Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. It grew in the temperature range of 10-37 °C (optimum 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-11.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and 0-1 % NaCl (w/v). Phylogenetic trees generated using 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 5516J-17T belongs to the genus Spirosoma, showing 96.9 % sequence similarity to the most closely related species, Spirosoma linguale DSM 74T. The cellular fatty acids comprised large amounts (>10 % of total fatty acids) of summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c) and C16:1ω5c, and moderate amounts (5-10 % of total fatty acids) of iso-C17:0 3-OH, iso-C15:0 and C16:0. The DNA G+C content was 55.7 mol % and MK-7 was the predominant isoprenoid quinone. Polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unknown aminophospholipids, one unknown aminolipid and one unknown lipid. On the basis of this phenotypic and polyphasic taxonomy study, it is suggested that strain 5516J-17T represents a novel species within the genus Spirosoma, with the proposed name Spirosoma aerophilum. The type strain is 5516J-17T (= KACC 17323T = DSM 28388T = JCM 19950T).

A novel bacterium, strain 7515T-26T, was isolated from an air sample collected in Taean region, Republic of Korea. Cells were aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-flagellated cocci, growing in the temperature, pH and NaCl ranges of 10-33 °C, pH 5.0-9.0 and 0-2 % (w/v). It shared high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Friedmanniella lacustris EL-17AT (97.6 %), Friedmanniella lucida FA2T (96.9 %) and Friedmanniella luteola FA1T (96.9 %), showing high sequence similarities of 96.5-97.6 % with members of the genus Friedmanniella. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain 7515T-26T and members of the genus Friedmanniella formed a compact cluster separable from other genera. The isolate contained anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C14 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 as the major cellular fatty acids, and MK-9(H4) as the predominant isoprenoid quinone. Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, two unknown phospholipids and one unknown lipid, and the DNA G+C content was 73.1 mol%. The peptidoglycan type was A3γ. It showed DNA-DNA hybridization values of less than 70 % with F. lacustris EL-17AT. On the basis of the evidence from this polyphasic study, a novel species, Friedmanniella aerolata sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is 7515T-26T ( = KACC 17306T = DSM 27139T).

A dark-pink-coloured bacterial strain, B4Y-8T, was isolated from a soil cultivated with ginseng. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of this strain showed highest similarity with Mucilaginibacter litoreus BR-18T (96.8 %), Mucilaginibacter lutimaris BR-3T (96.6 %) and Mucilaginibacter defluvii A5T (96.2 %) among the type strains of species of the genus Mucilaginibacter. Strain B4Y-8T was a strictly aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, short-rod-shaped bacterium producing a large amount of extracellular polymeric substance. The strain grew at 10-35 °C (optimum, 25 °C), at pH 3.0-11.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and in the presence of 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The DNA G+C content of strain B4Y-8T was 49.0 mol%. It contained menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major isoprenoid quinone, and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. On the basis of evidence from the present polyphasic taxonomic study, strain B4Y-8T should be classified as representing a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter ginsengisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is B4Y-8T ( = KACC 18152T = JCM 30759T).

An isolate of a Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, motile, rod-shaped, endospore-forming bacterium was recovered from soybean-based fermented paste. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that the strain was most closely related to Bacillus sonorensis KCTC-13918T (99.5 % similarity) and Bacillus licheniformis DSM 13T (99.4 %). In phenotypic characterization, the novel strain was found to grow at 15–60 °C and to tolerate up to 10 % (w/v) NaCl. Furthermore, the strain grew in media with pH 6–11 (optimal growth at pH 7.0–8.0). The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 (37.7 %) and iso-C15 : 0 (31.5 %). The predominant isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. A draft genome sequence of the strain was completed and used for phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenomic analysis of all published genomes of species in the B. licheniformis group revealed that strains belonging to B. licheniformis clustered into two distinct groups, with group 1 consisting of B. licheniformis DSM 13T and 11 other strains and group 2 consisting of KJ-16T and four other strains. The DNA G+C content of strain KJ-16T was 45.9 % (determined from the genome sequence). Strain KJ-16T and another strain from group 2 were subsequently characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach and compared with strains from group 1 and another closely related species of the genus Bacillus. Based upon the consensus of phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses, we conclude that this strain represents a novel species within the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus paralicheniformis sp. nov. is proposed, with type strain KJ-16T ( = KACC 18426T = NRRL B-65293T).

Two independent isolates of a Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium were recovered from cheonggukjang, a Korean fermented soybean paste food product. Preliminary sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA gene indicated that these strains were related most closely to Bacillus sonorensis KCTC-13918T and Bacillus licheniformis DSM 13T. In phenotypic characterization, the novel strains were found to grow between 15 and 55 °C and to tolerate up to 8 % (w/v) NaCl. Furthermore, the strains grew in media of pH 5-10 (optimal growth at pH 7.0). The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0.The isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unknown glycolipid. Draft genomes of the two strains were determined and in silico DNA-DNA hybridizations with their nearest neighbour (B. sonorensis KCTC-13918T) revealed 29.9 % relatedness for both strains. Phylogenomic analysis of the genomes was conducted with the core genome (799 genes) of all strains in the Bacillus subtilis group and the two strains formed a distinct monophyletic cluster. In addition, the strains differed from the two most closely related species in that they did not metabolize maltose, d-galactose, d-sorbitol or d-gluconic acid. The DNA G+C content was 45.9 mol%. Based upon the consensus of phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses, these strains represent a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus glycinifermentans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GO-13T ( = KACC 18425T = NRRL B-65291T).

The rhizosphere-isolated bacteria belonging to the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum and Bacillus methylotrophicus clades are an important group of strains that are used as plant growth promoters and antagonists of plant pathogens. These properties have made these strains the focus of commercial interest. Here, we present the draft genome sequence of B. methylotrophicus KACC 13105(T) ( = CBMB205(T)). Comparative genomic analysis showed only minor differences between this strain and the genome of the B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum type strain, with the genomes sharing approximately 95% of the same genes. The results of morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses indicate that the type strains of these two taxa are highly similar. In fact, our results show that the type strain of B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum FZB42(T) ( = DSM 23117(T) = BGSC 10A6(T)) does not cluster with other members of the B. amyloliquefaciens taxon. Instead, it clusters well within a clade of strains that are assigned to B. methylotrophicus, including the type strain of that species. Therefore, we propose that the subspecies B. amyloliquefaciens subsp. plantarum should be reclassified as a later heterotypic synonym of B. methylotrophicus.

One bacterial strain, designated KIS75-12T, isolated from a soil sample collected from Wonsando island located in Boryeong city, Republic of Korea, was characterized as aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-flagellated and a short rod. It grew between temperatures of 15-37 °C, pH 4-9 and 0-3.0 % (w/v) NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene analysis showed the strain was moderately related to Jatrophihabitans endophyticus S9-650T (97.7 %) and revealed low sequence similarity (≤94.7 %) with all the other species with validly published names. Its major fatty acid was iso-C16 : 0. The predominant menaquinone of strain KIS75-12T was MK-9(H4). The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol and several small amounts of phosphatidylinositol, aminolipids and glycolipid. The peptidoglycan contained meso-A2pm as diagnostic diamino acid and the peptidoglycan type is A4γ. The genomic DNA G+C content of the type strain was 72.1 mol%. The combined phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data showed that strain KIS75-12T could be clearly distinguished from the only member of the genus Jatrophihabitans,J. endophyticus. Therefore, the results of this study indicate the existence of a representative of a novel species of the genus Jatrophihabitans, for which we propose the name Jatrophihabitans soli sp. nov., with strain KIS75-12T ( = KACC 17298T = DSM 45908T  = NBRC 109658T) as the type strain. An emended description of the genus Jatrophihabitans is also given.

Two strains of species of the genus Marmoricola, designated KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T, were isolated from soil samples in Korea. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain KIS18-7T showed highest similarities with Marmoricola scoriae Sco-D01T (97.8 %), Marmoricola aequoreus SST-45T (97.6 %) and Marmoricola aurantiacus BC 361T (97.3 %), and strain JOS5-1T had highest sequence similarities with M. aequoreus SST-45T (97.5 %) and Marmoricola bigeumensis MSL-05T (97.3 %). The sequence similarity between KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T was 98.1 %. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these strains grouped with species of the genus Marmoricola. The major fatty acids of strain KIS18-7T were iso-C16 : 0 and C17 : 1ω8c, and C17 : 1ω8c, C18 : 0 10-methyl (TBSA), C18 : 1ω9c, C17 : 0 10-methyl and C16 : 0 2-OH for strain JOS5-1T. Strain KIS18-7T contained the polar lipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylcholine, while strain JOS5-1T contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown aminolipid and two unknown phospholipids. The peptidoglycan of both strains contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and a single glycine residue as the interpeptide bridge (type A3γ). The major menaquinone of both strains was MK-8(H4). The G+C contents of the DNA of strains KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T were 68.0 mol% and 62.9 mol%, respectively. These data demonstrate that strains KIS18-7T and JOS5-1T are representatives of two novel species of the genus Marmoricola, for which the names Marmoricola solisilvae sp. nov. (type strain KIS18-7T = KACC 17307T = DSM 27140T = NBRC 109601T) and Marmoricola terrae sp. nov. (type strain JOS5-1T = KACC 17308T = DSM 27141T = NBRC 109602T) are proposed.

A Gram-stain-negative, variably shaped, non-flagellated, yellow-pigmented, aerobic bacterium, designated strain SGM2-10(T), was isolated from a paddy soil sample from the Suwon region, South Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the isolate was related most closely to Parasegetibacter luojiensis RHYL-37(T). Strain SGM2-10(T) showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to P. luojiensis RHYL-37(T) (95.1 %), Flavitalea populi HY-50R(T) (95.0 %) and Flavitalea gansuensis JCN-23(T) (94.4 %). No other species in the family Chitinophagaceae shared more than 94.1 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with strain SGM2-10(T). The major fatty acids of strain SGM2-10(T) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. The only menaquinone was MK-7. The polar lipids comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, seven unknown lipids and ten unknown aminolipids. The G+C content of the DNA of strain SGM2-10(T) was 46.7 mol%. On the basis of the results of the polyphasic characterization presented in this study, it is concluded that strain SGM2-10(T) represents a novel species of the genus Parasegetibacter, for which the name Parasegetibacter terrae sp. nov. is proposed. Strain KIS2-16(T) was isolated from a soil sample collected from Daecheong Island of Incheon region, South Korea. KIS2-16(T) was Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, non-spore-forming, non-motile, catalase-positive, oxidase-negative and mesophilic. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain KIS2-16(T) represented a member of the genus Nocardioides, being most closely related to the type strains of species of the genus Nocardioides, Nocardioides maradonensis RP-B30(T) (97.8 % sequence similarity) and Nocardioides ultimimeridianus RP-B26(T) (97.0 %). The fatty acid profile of KIS2-16(T) was dominated by C18 : 1ω9c, C17 : 1ω8c, C16 : 0, C18 : 0 10-methyl (TBSA), C16 : 0 2-OH and C17 : 0 2-OH. The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-8(H4), and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. The peptidoglycan structure was A3γ-type with ll-diaminopimelic acid. The genomic DNA G+C content of KIS2-16(T) was 64.9 mol%. Strain KIS2-16(T) showed DNA-DNA hybridization values of less than 70 % with the closely related species of the genus Nocardioides. Based on phenotypic, genotypic and phylogenetic data, the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Nocardioides, for which the name Nocardioides daecheongensis sp. nov. A novel Gram-stain-positive, short rod-shaped, non-flagellated and mesophilic strain, KIS12-7(T), isolated from a soil sample collected from Daecheong-Island in Ongjin County, Republic of Korea, was studied using a polyphasic approach. Phylogenetic trees based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the novel strain was a member of the genus Gryllotalpicola, showing more than 97.0 % sequence similarity with Gryllotalpicola daejeonensis RU-04(T) (98.0 %), Gryllotalpicola koreensis RU-16(T) (97.7 %) and Gryllotalpicola kribbensis PU-02(T) (97.3 %). However, DNA-DNA relatedness values demonstrated that strain KIS12-7(T) could be clearly distinguished from closely related species of the genus Gryllotalpicola. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain KIS12-7(T) was of the type B2 and the acyl type was acetyl. The predominant menaquinones were MK-11 and MK-10. Polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, one unknown phosphoglycolipid, one unknown glycolipid, one unknown phospholipid and one unknown lipid. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 72.1 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, strain KIS12-7(T) is a representative of a novel species of the genus Gryllotalpicola, and the name Gryllotalpicola soli sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is KIS12-7(T) ( = DSM 27182(T) = KACC 17302(T) = NBRC 109659(T))., (© 2014 IUMS.)

A Gram-stain-negative, short rod-shaped, non-flagellated, yellow bacterium, designated strain 5GHs7-2(T), was isolated from a greenhouse soil sample in South Korea. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain 5GHs7-2(T) indicated that the isolate belonged to the family Chitinophagaceae, and exhibited the highest sequence similarities with members of the genera Terrimonas (89.2-92.6 %), Sediminibacterium (90.8-91.4 %) and Chitinophaga (89.2-91.7 %), Filimonas lacunae YT21(T) (91.7 %), members of the genus Segetibacter (90.2-91.6 %), Parasegetibacter luojiensis RHYL-37(T) (90.9 %) and Flavihumibacter petaseus T41(T) (91.2 %). Flexirubin-type pigments were present. The major cellular fatty acids of the novel strain were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. The polar lipid profile consisted of a large amount of phosphatidylethanolamine, and moderate and small amounts of several unknown aminolipids and lipids. The only respiratory quinone of strain 5GHs7-2(T) was MK-7, and the DNA G+C content was 47.6 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented, it is concluded that strain 5GHs7-2(T) represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Chitinophagaceae, for which the name Parafilimonas terrae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. A bacterial strain, designated RHs22(T), was isolated from a soil sample cultivated with rice in the Suwon region of South Korea. The cells were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, non-flagellated rods or occasionally filaments. The strain grew at 10-37 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), at pH 5.0-10.0 (optimum, 7.0) and in the presence of 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). Phylogenetically, the strain was closely related to members of the genus Spirosoma, as its 16S rRNA gene sequence had similarity of 90.3-92.1 % with respect to those of members of the genus Spirosoma, showing the highest sequence similarity with Spirosoma panaciterrae DSM 21099(T). Strain RHs22(T) revealed relatively low sequence similarities of less than 90 % with all the other species with validly published names. It contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c), C16 : 1ω5c, iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as the main fatty acids. The polar lipids of strain RHs22(T) were phosphatidylethanolamine, one unknown aminolipid, two unknown aminophospholipids, one unknown phospholipid and five unknown lipids. The DNA G+C content was 57.0 mol%. Phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic data obtained in this study indicate that strain RHs22(T) represents a novel species of the genus Spirosoma, for which the name Spirosoma oryzae sp. nov. is proposed. A novel strain, designated 5GHs31-2(T), was isolated from a greenhouse soil sample collected from Yongin city, South Korea. Cells of strain 5GHs31-2(T) were Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, polar flagellated and yellow-pigmented. The isolate was aerobic, catalase-negative and oxidase-positive and grew optimally at 28-30 °C and pH 7.0. Strain 5GHs31-2(T) revealed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Fulvimonas soli LMG 19981(T) (97.6%), Dyella thiooxydans ATSB10(T) (97.5%) and Frateuria terrea VA24(T) (97.4%). Furthermore, the neighbour-joining tree showed that strain 5GHs31-2(T) was a representative of a member of the genus Fulvimonas. Strain 5GHs31-2(T) contained iso-C(16 : 0), summed feature 9 (iso-C(17 : 1)ω9c and/or C(16 : 0) 10-methyl), iso-C(15 : 0) and iso-C(17 : 0) as the major fatty acids, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and an aminolipid as the main polar lipids and Q-8 as the predominant quinone. The genomic DNA G+C content of 5GHs31-2(T) was 73.0 mol%. According to DNA-DNA hybridization experiments, DNA-DNA relatedness values between strain 5GHs31-2(T) and its closest phylogenetic neighbours were below 70%. Based on the taxonomic data, strain 5GHs31-2(T) represents a novel species of the genus Fulvimonas, for which the name Fulvimonas yonginensis sp. nov. is proposed. A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, endospore-forming, moderately halophilic rod, designated strain R1(T), was isolated from rice husks and subjected to a taxonomic study using a polyphasic approach. Strain R1(T) produced spherical or ellipsoidal endospores at a subterminal position in swollen sporangia, and was catalase- and oxidase-positive. The isolate grew optimally at 37 °C and pH 6.0-7.0, and could grow in the presence of up to 9% (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R1(T) belongs to the genus Bacillus. The closest relatives of strain R1(T) were Bacillus subtilis subsp. subtilis NCIB 3610(T), Bacillus aquimaris TF-12(T), and Bacillus marisflavi TF-11(T), with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 96.0%, 98.4%, and 98.7%, respectively. DNA-DNA relatedness values between the isolate and the reference strains were ≤42±3%. The predominant menaquinones were MK-5 (50%) and MK-7 (50%). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C(15 : 0) (48.6%) and anteiso-C(15 : 0) (20.6%), and the cell-wall diamino acid was meso-diaminopimelic acid. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses and chemotaxonomic and phenotypic characteristics, it is concluded that strain R1(T) represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which we propose the name Bacillus oryzaecorticis sp. nov. A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-flagellated bacterium, designated KIS22-12(T), was isolated from a soil sample of Baengnyeong Island in Onjin county, Republic of Korea. Cells were non-spore-forming cocci showing catalase-positive and oxidase-negative reactions. Growth of strain KIS22-12(T) was observed between 10 and 35 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), between pH 5.0 and 9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0-3% (w/v) NaCl. Strain KIS22-12(T) contained MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone, and C17 : 1ω8c, iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0 as the major fatty acids. Strain KIS22-12(T) contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown aminophospholipid, one unknown aminolipid, two unknown phospholipids and one unknown lipid. The peptidoglycan type was A1γ. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 75.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KIS22-12(T) formed a phyletic lineage with Oryzihumus leptocrescens KV-628(T). 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the two strains was 96.5%. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular properties, strain KIS22-12(T) represents a novel species within the genus Oryzihumus, for which the name Oryzihumus terrae sp. nov. is proposed.
