TWENTIETH century , *CRITICAL analysis , *METROPOLIS , *SOCIABILITY , *GEOGRAPHY - Abstract
The most diverse fields of knowledge have focused on understanding the dimension of space and time in human sociability for centuries. In the field of Geography is also a very traditional topic in terms of academic research. But the second half of the 20th century brought an expansion in reflections on temporal research, due to Hagerstrand's temporal geography research, as well later contributions in broader and more critical perspectives. But there are still few studies in Brazil with this theme. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the foundations of temporal geography for a critical analysis of urban crossings and biography of the daily (i)mobilities of the peripheral populations from the metropolis of São Paulo. The methodology used in this article refers to quantitative and qualitative approaches and usages of new technologies for the active GPS positioning of smartphones. It was found that the urban crossings of peripheral populations are marked by everyday constraints that limit the time-space prism and make it impossible to access opportunities on the edges of the metropolis of São Paulo. ROMANTIC love , *WOMEN'S writings , *CITIES & towns , *READING promotion , *PLEASURE - Abstract
A case study is presented with the results of a practice of reading for pleasure among a group of women living in the periphery, based on the theory of cultural consumption. The objective was to encourage intergenerational dialogue around the myths of romantic love, gender roles, and femininity, through literary texts written by women. The main results showed that literature is an ideal tool to encourage reflection on issues such as violence, discrimination, abuse, or femicide; at the same time, reading for pleasure increases. It is concluded that literary texts are tools that trigger reflections on gender issues and that the creation of workshops in peripheral areas of the cities can increase the taste for reading. CENSUS , *CATHOLIC priests , *PRINCIPAL components analysis , *SOCIAL participation , *PRIESTS , *SEMI-structured interviews , *SOCIAL movements - Abstract
The article discusses some of the lessons left by the book The Weight of the world (BOURDIEU, 1999) in the light of the findings of a research interview conducted with a Catholic priest, in which he discusses the participation of women in the social movements he led: for housing, education, health in the peripheries of a large Brazilian metropolis. The research team combined semi-structured interviews with the analysis of statistical series. The priest's testimony is presented almost in full in this article. Next, we show the partial results of a Principal Component Analysis, based on public statistics (POPULATION CENSUS, IBGE, 2012). The interview and the statistical analysis allow us to work on two different levels the notions of "misery of condition" and "misery of position", proposed in The Misery of the World. Introduction: The electoral volatility that has characterized the last electoral processes of the country has intensified with the ballots phenomenon. The instability in party support has been clearly concentrated in rural areas of the country. Objective: This article aims to present some findings regarding the reasons that explain the electoral volatility in the rural areas of the country based on the case study of the Cariari district, Pococí canton in the Limón province in the presidential elections of 2014 and 2018. Method: The paper presents territory as a geographical, political and explanatory concept that allows the understanding of the conditions that derived the electoral results of 2014 and 2018 elections in Cariari district. A mixed methodology has been used which complemented the quantitative and qualitative approaches. Results: The results show that the electoral volatility phenomenon in Costa Rica does not follow a random pattern instead, it has been located in rural areas. The study case allowed to observe how dissatisfaction and apathy with politics are both, the basis of support for parties with different ideological positions from 2014 to 2018. Conclusion: The perception of the abandonment of rural areas and the wish for political change is identified as the basis for the instability of party support. Also, a scenario is identified that facilitated the capitalization of support from the Partido Restauración Nacional due to a complex territorial dynamic in which religious groups play a main role. This paper presents the results of a quantitative study of adjuncts in the Airbus corpus carried out within the theoretical framework of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG). We describe the positional behaviour of these peripheral constituents in the Layered Structure of the Clause and postulate scales of positional and peripheral preferences, based on frequency distribution, in the Airbus controlled natural language (CNL). The results obtained were compared with a previous study on adjunct preferences and positions in Natural English to check for changes in these scales due to the nature of the texts written in this CNL. We also aim to contribute to the development of the RRG analysis of adverbials by offering a detailed semantic typology and a description of the syntax of these peripheral constituents grounded in empirical and quantitatively based data that will serve as a basis for the parsing of adverbials in the computational processing of CNLs. BLACK youth , *YOUNG adults , *ONLINE dating mobile apps , *ONLINE dating , *SOCIAL isolation , *VIRTUAL communities - Abstract
The text presents the perception of young black people from peripheral regions of the state of Rio de Janeiro about webdating, technologies and black youth. Due to the conditions imposed by social isolation, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, many young people have seen apps as a possibility for romantic relationships. The research, methodologically characterized as descriptive, sought to provide qualitative and quantitative evidence of young people's views on the subjects, understanding their intersections. It was found that access to the internet is a limiting factor for the young people surveyed, as only 28 respondents returned the survey, a fact that can also have an impact on their experiences in online sociability networks. Among this group, conventional social interaction apps stand out, with little or no access to specific online dating apps. We did not identify a solid adherence to webdating in this group, but we did find that even among those who have not experienced webdating, they understand the possibility of the dangerous consequences that this type of relationship can have. Regarding race, there was a contradiction: it was pointed out as a positive factor in the online environment, with representativeness emerging with relevance, even though there is prejudice in this place; but also, as something that does not help in online dating. The results also pointed to future parallel studies on the obstacles faced by this group, such as the issue of employability of young black people in peripheries, as well as the impact provided by technology on various aspects of sociability. COMMUNITIES , *DAM design & construction , *EMINENT domain , *CAPTIVITY , *PASTORAL societies , *GENERALIZATION , *URBAN growth - Abstract
In this article I present a set of formulations, enunciated or activated of the Pastoral Land Commission of Juazeiro-BA, regarding the relations between the land expropriation process triggered by the construction of the Sobradinho dam and the expansion of the peripheries of Juazeiro and Petrolina-PE. The formulation that I take as a guide for this set and that I use as the title of this article was formulated by Marina Rocha Braga, agent of this pastoral service. It was she who called my attention to these relationships, saying that the study of the peripheries and prisons of these cities requires an understanding of the captivity of the land. In the first part of this article I deal with this meeting with Marina and its initial developments, while in the second part I try to show how this problem raised by her is consolidated in other formulations made by pastoral agents and by companions of communities affected by large energy projects, but also how it connects to older formulations that also compose or were triggered by the same pastoral work. In the third and last part I present five examples that were exposed to me by Marina to explain what captivity is, and then, risking a generalization, I indicate how they provide elements to think about the urban peripheries of Juazeiro and Petrolina as captivity par excellence, as well as to organize the data I have been gathering on prison and police expansion in these two cities. This article analyzes the formation and transformations in the identities of São Paulo's peripheries dwellers in recent decades. Our proposal here is that identity must be understood in a relational and historical way. Thus, it is sewn together with discourses, practices, and processes that produce subjectivities. The paper is based on an ethnographic work carried out in two neighborhoods on the outskirts of São Paulo. It is argued that, in the 1970s and 1980s, the identity of "workers" was formed in contrast to that of "bosses" and "bandits". This identity was the basis of a collective project to integrate workers into the wage society and the world of citizenship rights. After the productive restructuring and social changes in the 1990s and 2000s, this identity disintegrated and gave way to the identity of "peripherals". This new identity was built in cultural mobilization around cultural movements and collectives in opposition to the "elites" and in response to the stigma that these regions suffer from. Between 2014 and 2018, a period marked by major political and economic upheaval, Brazilian politics shifted sharply to the Right. Presenting qualitative research conducted over 2016–17, this article examines this process from the perspectives of residents of a peripheral São Paulo neighbourhood. Analysis is presented of three broad groups of respondents, each of which mobilised a distinct narrative framework for interpreting the crisis. Based on this, I argue that the rightward turn in urban peripheries embodies not a significant ideological shift, but rather long-term transformations of place and the largely contingent ways these articulate with electoral politics. HOUSING , *URBAN planning , *HOUSING development , *SOCIAL policy , *POLICE brutality - Abstract
Social housing production was one of the emblems of the Ecuadorian policy of the "Citizen Revolution" chaired by Rafael Correa for 10 years. From the case of Ecuador, it is analyzed how progressive governments applied policies in the field of social housing and urban development. This article tracks the scales of application these social policies had regarding neoliberalism, from the point of view of the violence and responses that the process provoked. In Quito, families organized to obtain the promised homes after years of waiting. In Guayaquil, police violence displaced entire neighborhoods to achieve urban renewal through an ecological plan. In Portoviejo, from the earthquake of 2016, the center was converted, and the houses were moved to the periphery. From an historic, spatial, and qualitative methodology, this analysis shows the limitations of the proposals of the progressive governments, and the popular organization to avoid displacement towards the peripheries. power ,périphéries ,pouvoir ,peripheries ,poder ,periferias ,cultura ,culture - Abstract
In this article, I seek to make a critical rereading of the cultural production of the peripheries and its relationship with the « system », that is, with the established power. From the financing used by such production, whether public or private, as well as their partnerships and the consequences resulting from these links, I seek to reflect on the political, cultural and subjective impacts in the context of the peripheries. Taking as a starting point the seminal works on the subject, as well as the « pedagogical, aesthetic and political project » (NASCIMENTO, 2009) derived from this production, I raise some questions that I think are interesting, to think about culture, politics and peripheries in the current context, reflecting on the incidence of neoliberal/neocolonial logic in culture, based on the research I have been developing since 2016 with collectives Perifatividade and Poesia na Brasa and more recently with Casa Ecoativa and collective Imargem, in São Paulo.

Although the postcolonial European imaginary describes multicultural Europeansocieties, this trait was built at the expense of cheap workforce, often considered easilyassimilated and integrated (Jerónimo & Monteiro 2020). As Víctor Pereira (2015) argues onthe Portuguese case, emigrants were never heard. This article discusses “Eu empresto-tea Mariá” and Um Fado Atlântico whose protagonists are immigrant women servants, andargues that these narratives question the patriarchal and classist mindset underlying theneocolonial power over the Other, the immigrant woman in this case. The humanizingnarrative representation of the immigrant woman is an act of resistance that deconstructsthe postcolonial and capitalist myth of integration. publishersversion published

While a great part of the contemporary literature on mobilities has focused on how privileged social positions held by businessmen, academics, and professionals define contemporary mobile society, this paper will focus on the everyday mobilities of subordinated and peripheral populations, using fieldwork data from El Salto, a county (municipio) in the periphery of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Mexico. Presenting the range of displacements and movements performed by its inhabitants, this article contests the dominant view of subordinated populations within a mobile society, often described as confined or passive. The expansion of metropolitan areas, especially in Brazil, has required reflections about the conditions of habitability and life in cities, especially in peripheral areas, marked by deep inequalities in the inaccessibility of services, which reveal the contradictions of the general conditions of production in these areas. A great example is accessibility to the services of technical water and sewage infrastructure networks, seen as primary elements and essential to human dignity. The inequalities in this access are marked territorially and end up revealing internal differentiations that soften the problems of peripheral areas. Therefore, this article aims to discuss this inequality, taking as an example the case of 5 peripheral municipalities of Rio de Janeiro, which are part of the region popularly known as Baixada Fluminense, marked by the paradox of insertion in one of the largest watersheds of urban supply in the world and the condition of vulnerability in access to sanitation. This article aims to discuss the reinvention of territories of peripheral childhoods and youths based on photographs and poems produced by photographer Leo Silva and poet Talles Azigon (identified after acceptance of the article) as a way of re-existing in Fortaleza. These are problematizations arising from the realization of an inter(in)vention research of cartographic ethos, with these young people, in which images and poems emerge as playful devices in the production of counter-hegemonic movements against the “official images” historically imposed on the peripheries. Through these photographs and poems, and, therefore, through art, the claim of territories portrays and narrates childhoods and youths on the outskirts of Fortaleza from their strengths and not from their precariousness. As an experiment, the article was produced from these poems and photographs, in addition to counting on the participation of (to be identified if the article is accepted, as it acts as a participant in the writing of the article) and (to be identified if the article is accepted, as it acts as a participant in the writing of the article) in the elaboration of the text as a decolonial movement (dis)inhabiting academic writing. This article examines solidarity networks that have been organized during the Covid-19 pandemic in the peripheries of the city of São Paulo to respond to the overlapping of economic and sanitary crises, which particularly affect families in precarious living conditions. The objective is to argue that these articulations reveal a context marked by the state’s abandonment of its responsibilities to guarantee social rights, and by resistances and struggles that articulate race, gender, class and territory, which have grown in the past decade in the peripheries. Finally, it emphasizes the fundamental role of women who construct these networks through their daily experiences providing care. Care is not understood here as being restricted to the domestic dimension, but as a gendered practice that produces relations and struggles.

- Abstract
The 50 years celebration of the Conference of Medellin (1968) coincides with the 5 years of Pope Francis' pastoral ministry (2013). This chronological coincidence is a prime occasion to clarify and emphasize the theological-pastoral coincidence between both. It helps to understand better the process of ecclesial renewal triggered by Francis and the current relevance of the ecclesial dynamism, unleashed by Medellin. First, the text highlights the importance of Medellin and of Francis in the Church and in society. It then explains the fundamental theological/pastoral perspective of both. And, from that perspective, it addresses some of the major challenges the Church is faced with today in her mission of evangelization: challenges regarding the understanding and setup of the Church and her mission (Ecclesiology), and the appeals and demands that spring from our present historical situation (signs of the times). This article discusses the new modality of governance of the poor in border territories of Brazilian cities, specifically in their favelas and peripheries. We analyze, based on research carried out in Rio de Janeiro, dynamics that, at first glance, could appear to be local: the disciplinarization of inhabitants, the commodification of their territories and the militarization of their lives through the Pacifying Police Units. We argue that these units’ local implementation is an experiment in the production of order without democratic mediations for the management of social conflicts, which has the potential to be replicated in other territories and situations, as well as in relation to other populations under the logic of “urban militarism” (Graham).

The various crises that have afflicted Brazil in recent years have revealed relations of insecurity in the labor market and brought to the fore the notion of "entrepreneurship". Especially since 2010s, this topic has polarized opinions that are not limited to the economy, in which both the defense of an autonomous way of life and the denunciation of forms of deregulation of work appear. Entrepreneurship, whether out of necessity or out of conviction, came to be perceived in different interconnected contexts, such as school, family and the cultural industry, as they represent an alternative to situations of unemployment and a renewed, sometimes unsubmissive, popular subjectivity. Thus, a popular culture historically moved by individualistic solutions to situations of survival or search for autonomy is joined by globalized precepts of entrepreneurship as rationalization. The objective of this thesis is to describe the ongoing process of formation of an entrepreneurship of popular character, in which elements of the experience of wageless life structure ways of life and establish ambiguous relationships with the impositions of modernization. In the clash between the social mobility of recent years and the awareness of the precariousness of the job market, under the umbrella of the contemporary yearning for self-realization, self-help techniques foster the individualization of suffering, thus forming a structure of feelings of global reach in which the advances in technology reinvigorate and enable sophisticated forms of self-management. Giving consequence to the discourse, socio-educational training for the youngest encourages a rupture with the space of popular experience, based on practical knowledge, and gives new meaning to the notion of merit, which is no longer based on objective criteria to and starts to promote abstract attributes. On the other hand, the discourse also reaches a previous generation of people exhausted by a life of subordinate work and fearful about the future; they see in entrepreneurship a new opportunity for self-realization, but whose adaptation to the new parameters often brings them frustration. Two vectors to encourage entrepreneurship especially highlighted here are social businesses and Prosperity Theology, which make specific discursive adaptations for their audiences. Popular entrepreneurship is thus positioned at the heart of the contradictions involving the conservation of family and customs and the renewal of the utopia of work through entrepreneurial rationality. The methodological approach to the research issue was based on an ethnography developed between 2017 and 2021 in the south periphery of São Paulo at events, religious services and shopping streets; in-depth interviews with self-employed workers, waged employees who also performed other activities to supplement their income and entrepreneurs; and monitoring of social networks and cultural commodities, bringing together extensive empirical research and the use of theory to identify ways of life and their conflicts, whose references are found in the works of Michael Burawoy, E. P. Thompson and Raymond Williams. As a conclusion, this thesis states that self-management points both to the refusal of suffering and to a renewed utopia of freedom at the expense of regulated citizenship, fostering a society of entrepreneurs Doutorado Ciências Sociais Doutor em Ciências Sociais CAPES 88887.499103/2020-00

This paper examines different heritagization processes in peripheral areas of Southern (the Portuguese-Spanish border in the Lower Guadiana Basin) and Central (Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland) Europe, while defining the peripherality of these borderland regions from a geographic as well as a socio-economic perspective. We pay particular attention to community building initiatives involving heritage mobilization, i.e., the participation of local communities in activities related to heritage enhancement, the participatory strategies, and the actors in these social processes. Despite the differences in the historical development of the countries selected, their peripheries face similar processes while generating different responses to those issues. Through the description of selected, locally based cases, the paper explores the varieties and the specifics of heritagization in peripheral regions (such as the role of in/stability of the borders, issues around the adaptability/resilience of local communities and sustainable growth strategies as well as the balance of local/global aspects in heritagization). Finally, the description and interpretation of the cases brings up new questions and addresses new issues which can be analysed and developed in further research (e.g., the role of the boundaries, communication/cooperation in cross-border communities, the differentiation of heritagization, etc.), El presente trabajo analiza distintos procesos de patrimonialización en áreas periféricas del suroeste europeo (frontera hispano-lusa en el Bajo Guadiana) y Centroeuropa (República Checa, Eslovaquia y Polonia), definiendo la condición periférica de las fronteras desde las perspectivas geográfica y socioeconómica.

Narrative form ,Forma narrativa ,Periferias ,World-literature ,Peripheries ,Literatura-mundial - Abstract
This essay offers a case study of world-literary comparativism by considering two contemporary fictions from semi-peripheries, Congolese Alain Mabanckou’s African Psycho (2003) and Angolan Pepetela’s Jaime Bunda, Agente Secreto (2001), which both employ “imperfect” narrators with comically exaggerated bodies whose physical asymmetries employ a somatic semiotics that satirically embodies the affects and bodily habitus associated with uneven and uneven development, with corresponding asymmetries in plot, narration, and form. Both texts self-consciously appropriate and reinvent narratological devices from earlier writers from semi-peripheral situations, including Machado and Dostoevsky. These narratological innovations are welded to uneven aesthetics that combine generic elements of crime, detective, and thriller fiction. I argue that the “failed narrator” prominent in the fictions of Pepetela and Mabanckou can be interpreted as a formal device mediating the social pressures of uneven development across multiple socio-temporal contexts and I will compare its contemporary use in these two different contexts of postcolonial African nations in light of earlier semiperipheral locations of literary production, considering Pepetela’s Luanda and Mabanckou’s Brazzaville in reference to Dostoevsky’s St. Petersburg, Herman Ungar’s Prague-Boskovice, and Machado’s Rio de Janeiro.

This article addresses the relationships between architects and the questions of “the people” and “social housing” as discursive constructions and urban realities in São Paulo, from the 1960s until the 1980s. In the 1970s, in the midst of a crisis of initial attempts to situate the problem of low- -income housing at the center of architects’ agendas within the political left, the relationship between progressive architects and poor peripheral populations goes through an initial paradigmatic turn. In Peru, eradication campaigns targeting coca crops in the Upper Huallaga have dispersed the country's drug trade over vast parts of the Bajo Amazonas region. In order to understand this dispersal it is necessary to map the relocations of coca cultivations or shifts in smuggling routes, but also to examine the array of micro-practices, relations, groups and networks that generate ‘drug flows’. By following different key actors, this article explores the movements of drug lords, smugglers and producers who intersect frontiers, borders and borderlands. This empirical focus is combined with an analysis of the actors’ social ties to other groups to discover the myriad ways in which illegal/legal forces are part of the power arrangements that form the foundation for Peru's drug flows. There are countless investigations produced since the 1990s, which focus on the changes identified in the Brazilian religious field and their repercussions in other spheres of social life. In this article, I return to the memorable anthropologist Pierre Sanchis' formulations on “urban popular culture” with the aim of comparatively reflecting on Pentecostal growth in the peripheries from the 2000s onwards. This growth revealed compositions between cultural references hitherto prevalent and new forms of aesthetic and grammatical appropriation with repercussions on sociability, on the economy and on local and supralocal politics. As an empirical basis of the analyzes proposed here, I count on interviews, data and observations produced during intermittent fieldwork carried out in Rio's favelas, with an emphasis on the Acari favela, in addition to data from a survey conducted at Universidade Federal Fluminense mapping religious temples in the city from Rio de Janeiro.

Journalism of the Peripheries: the solidarity social dialogue in the urban borders results from a field research carried out between 2018 and 2019 in the peripheries of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region. Written by the researcher and professor Mara Rovida, the work originates from the epistemological restlessness in the face of a recente communicational phenomenon in Brazil: professional journalism done on, for and from the peripheries. The main objective of the research Journey reported in the book was to understand how professionals in Journalism of the Peripheries work to produce polysemic and polyphonic narratives about the locations where they live and the city as a whole. Inspired by Clifford Geertz’s ethnographic approach, the author uses the meanings atributes by the research subjects to interpret the fenômeno studied and systematize its characteristics.

In this paper we situate the discussion on gender and masculinities in the context of their hierarchical qualifications and disqualifications of our humanness. Taking as a point of departure the structural and structuring violence that marks postcolonies, such as Brazil, we question the dynamics of racial-gendered violence that reproduce the imbricated norms, standards and pacts of hegemonic masculinities. In this way, we propose a dialogue with peripherized artistic-cultural practices that reshape how we incorporate such idealizations of gender. To this end, we focus on the production of the performance Na Manha – developed within the scope of the artistic residency of the GlobalGRACE (Global Gender and Cultures of Equality) research-action project, with the Dance Company Passinho Carioca and under the direction of the dance collective Mulheres ao Vento (Women in the Wind) in Rio de Janeiro.

This article is part of a joint ethnographic exercise to problematize notions of “periphery”, or what is “peripheral”, articulated to certain social markers of difference present in the circulations of subjects who self-identify as masculine and (homo)sexual. Based on two fields of study applied to the city of São Paulo, we discuss the possibilities of crossing contributions from feminist geography with urban anthropological studies, and vice versa, mainly considering the production of space caused by the circulation of subjects.

Founded in 2009 during the conclusion research by young journalists who live on the outskirts of the south area of the city of São Paulo (SP), Periferia em Movimento completes more than a decade of activity producing journalistic content about guaranteeing rights elaborating new possible narratives based on social, cultural and political actions on the margins of the São Paulo capital. And, in addition to rethinking newsmaking itself, it has trained and transformed the “Jornalistas de Quebrada” themselves as the authors and members of the initiative demonstrate in this report.
