1. Sampling Rate and ADC Resolution Requirements in Digital Front-End Electronics for TOF PET

Abstract: In the context of the development of an in-beam time-of-flight positron emission tomography demonstrator dedicated to the in vivo monitoring of delivered dose in hadrontherapy, we evaluate the potential performance of front-end architectures based on sampling and digital pulse processing to reconstruct the energy and time of event. In this paper, we evaluate the requirements for sampling frequency and analog-to-digital converter (ADC) resolution. The timing algorithm is a digital adaptation of the constant fraction discriminator principle, with a step of interpolation using a low-pass filter based on the cubic spline technique. We demonstrate the interest of the interpolation to lower the sampling frequency requirement, by improving the signal reconstruction compared with a simple linear interpolation. Experimental tests were performed on pulse libraries acquired from a set up composed of LYSO and LaBr3 scintillators coupled to H6533 photomultipliers, and a sampling oscilloscope operating at 10 GHz. By offline processing of the signals with variable parameters (initial frequency, interpolator bandwidth, resampling frequency, and ADC resolution), we examined the impact of these parameters on time resolution. Results for the tested detectors suggest a minimal required sampling rate of 1.5 GHz, while the ADC resolution can be as small as 5 b. A logarithmic ADC could be more efficient, with a strict minimum of 4 b.

Abstract: International audience; We present the first results obtained with a detector, called Large Area Pixelized Detector (LAPD), dedicated to the study the ballistic control of the beam delivered to the patient by in-beam and real time detection of secondary particles, emitted during its irradiation in the context of hadrontherapy. These particles are 511 keV γ from the annihilation of a positron issued from the β+ emitters induced in the patient tissues along the beam path. The LAPD basic concepts are similar to a conventional PET camera. The 511 keV γ are detected and the reconstructed lines of response allow to measure the β+ activity distribution. Nevertheless, when trying to use γ from positron annihilation for the ballistic control in hadrontherapy, the large prompt γ background should be taken into account and properly rejected. First reconstruction results, obtained with a phantom filled with a high intensity FDG source at the cancer research centre of Clermont-Ferrand are shown. We also report results of measurements performed at the Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Centre with one third of the detector, using proton and carbon ion beams.

Abstract: International audience; The goal of this study is to tune the design of the absorber detector of a Compton camera for prompt γ-ray imaging during ion beam therapy. The response of the Compton camera to a photon point source with a realistic energy spectrum (corresponding to the prompt γ-ray spectrum emitted during the carbon irradiation of a water phantom) is studied by means of Geant4 simulations. Our Compton camera consists of a stack of 2 mm thick silicon strip detectors as a scatter detector and of a scintillator plate as an absorber detector. Four scintillators are considered: LYSO, NaI, LaBr3 and BGO. LYSO and BGO appear as the most suitable materials, due to their high photo-electric cross-sections, which leads to a high percentage of fully absorbed photons. Depth-of-interaction measurements are shown to have limited influence on the spatial resolution of the camera. In our case, the thickness which gives the best compromise between a high percentage of photons that are fully absorbed and a low parallax error is about 4 cm for the LYSO detector and 4.5 cm for the BGO detector. The influence of the width of the absorber detector on the spatial resolution is not very pronounced as long as it is lower than 30 cm.

Abstract: We report test beam studies of {11\,\%} of the production ATLAS Tile Calorimeter modules. The modules were equipped with production front-end electronics and all the calibration systems planned for the final detector. The studies used muon, electron and hadron beams ranging in energy from 3~GeV to 350~GeV. Two independent studies showed that the light yield of the calorimeter was $\sim 70$~pe/GeV, exceeding the design goal by {40\,\%}. Electron beams provided a calibration of the modules at the electromagnetic energy scale. Over 200~calorimeter cells the variation of the response was {2.4\,\%}. The linearity with energy was also measured. Muon beams provided an intercalibration of the response of all calorimeter cells. The response to muons entering in the ATLAS projective geometry showed an RMS variation of 2.5\,\% for 91~measurements over a range of rapidities and modules. The mean response to hadrons of fixed energy had an RMS variation of {1.4\,\%} for the modules and projective angles studied. The response to hadrons normalized to incident beam energy showed an {8\,\%} increase between 10~GeV and 350~GeV, fully consistent with expectations for a non-compensating calorimeter. The measured energy resolution for hadrons of $\sigma/E = 52.9\,\%/\sqrt{E} \oplus 5.7\,\%$ was also consistent with expectations. Other auxiliary studies were made of saturation recovery of the readout system, the time resolution of the calorimeter an d the performance of the trigger signals from the calorimeter.

Abstract: International audience; A Compton camera is being developed for the purpose of ion-range monitoring during hadrontherapy via the detection of prompt-gamma rays. The system consists of a scintillating fiber beam tagging hodoscope, a stack of double sided silicon strip detectors (90 Â 90 Â 2 mm 3 , 2 Â 64 strips) as scatter detectors, as well as bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation detectors (38 Â 35 Â 30 mm 3 , 100 blocks) as absorbers. The individual components will be described, together with the status of their characterization.

Abstract: International audience; The GATE Monte Carlo simulation platform based on the Geant4 toolkit is in constant improvement for dosimetric calculations. In this paper, we present the integration of Geant4-DNA processes into the GATE 7.0 platform in the objective to perform multi-scale simulations (from macroscopic to nanometer scale). We simulated three types of clinical and preclinical beams: a 6 MeV electron clinical beam, a X-ray irradiator beam and a clinical proton beam for which we validated depth dose distributions against measurements in water. Frequencies of energy depositions and DNA damage were evaluated using a specific algorithm in charge of allocating energy depositions to atoms constituting DNA molecules represented by their PDB (Protein Data Bank) description.

Abstract: The main purpose of this development is to design an “intelligent sensor”, composed of one multi-anode PMT (Hamamatsu H8500), four custom front-end analog chips with embedded analog-to-digital converter and a pre-processing logical unit. The idea of this design is to improve as far as possible the treatment speed of signals of the PMT. This design must be compact to fit the PMT dimensions, in order to combine them together to form an assembly which will be used in medical imaging research, especially for gamma-ray camera at 141 keV ( Tc 99 m ) with NaI(Tl) crystal.

Abstract: poster Pistrui-Maximean, submitted to NIM A; In order to predict and optimize the response of phosphor screens, it is important to understand the role played by the different physical processes inside the scintillator layer. Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to determine the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of phosphor screens for energies used in X-ray medical imaging and nondestructive testing applications. The visualization of the dose distribution inside the phosphor layer gives an insight into how the MTF is progressively degraded by X-ray and electron transport. The simulation model allows to study the inﬂuence of physical and technological parameters on the detector performances, as well as to design and optimize new detector conﬁgurations. Preliminary MTF measurements have been carried out and agreement with experimental data has been found in the case of a commercial screen (Kodak Lanex Fine), at an X-ray tube potential voltage of 100 kV. Further validation with other screens (transparent or granular) at different energies is under way.

Abstract: Light-particle emission from Au+Au collisions has been studied in the bombarding-energy range 100–250 A ·MeV, using ΔE − E R telescopes in coincidence with the FOPI detector in its phase I configuration. Center-of-mass energy spectra have been measured for Z = 1,2 isotopes emitted in central collisions at CM polar angles between 60° and 90°. Evidence for a collective expansion is reported, on the basis of the mean kinetic energies of hydrogen isotopes. Comparison is presented with statistical calculations (WIX code). For CM kinetic energy spectra, fair agreement is found between data and a recently developed transport model.

Abstract: The production of neutral pions has been studied in the reactions 40 Ar + nat Ca , 86 Kr + nat Zr and 197 Au + 197 Au at 1 A GeV. For high energy pions emitted from the heavier systems a steeper than linear rise of the pion multiplicity with the centrality of the reaction is observed, indicating a pion production process other than binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. At low transverse momenta an enhancement of the π 0 -multiplicity increasing with the mass of the collision system is found. Systematic discrepancies between the experimental results and recent BUU, QMD and Cascade calculations are discussed.

Abstract: At the SIS/ESR accelerator facility at GSI in Darmstadt the 4π-detector system FOPI is under construction at present. It is designed for the investigation of central collisions of heavy ions in the energy range up to 2 A GeV. As phase I of this detector a forward wall has been built and used in various experiments. It comprizes a total number of 764 scintillators with an additional shell of 188 thin ΔE -detectors in front of it and covers the full azimuth of the polar angles from 1° to 30°. The velocity and the nuclear charge of the fragments are determined by a combined time-of-flight and ΔE measurement.

Abstract: We investigate, by means of Geant4 simulations, a real-time method to control the position of the Bragg peak during ion therapy, based on a Compton camera in combination with a beam tagging device (hodoscope) in order to detect the prompt gamma emitted during nuclear fragmentation. The proposed set-up consists of a stack of 2 mm thick silicon strip detectors and a LYSO absorber detector. The γ emission points are reconstructed analytically by intersecting the ion trajectories given by the beam hodoscope and the Compton cones given by the camera. The camera response to a polychromatic point source in air is analyzed with regard to both spatial resolution and detection efficiency. Various geometrical configurations of the camera have been tested. In the proposed configuration, for a typical polychromatic photon point source, the spatial resolution of the camera is about 8.3 mm FWHM and the detection efficiency 2.5×10−4 (reconstructable photons/emitted photons in 4 π ). Finally, the clinical applicability of our system is considered and possible starting points for further developments of a prototype are discussed.

Abstract: The response of pions and protons in the energy range of 20–180 GeV, produced at CERN's SPS H8 test-beam line in the ATLAS iron–scintillator Tile hadron calorimeter, has been measured. The test-beam configuration allowed the measurement of the longitudinal shower development for pions and protons up to 20 nuclear interaction lengths. It was found that pions penetrate deeper in the calorimeter than protons. However, protons induce showers that are wider laterally to the direction of the impinging particle. Including the measured total energy response, the pion-to-proton energy ratio and the resolution, all observations are consistent with a higher electromagnetic energy fraction in pion-induced showers. The data are compared with GEANT4 simulations using several hadronic physics lists. The measured longitudinal shower profiles are described by an analytical shower parametrization within an accuracy of 5–10%. The amount of energy leaking out behind the calorimeter is determined and parametrized as a function of the beam energy and the calorimeter depth. This allows for a leakage correction of test-beam results in the standard projective geometry.

Abstract: With the development of fast sampling electronics, digital pulse processing techniques for PET signals are raising interest. The optimal filter (OF) algorithm reconstructs pulse amplitude and time by two weighted sums, making it compatible with real-time implementation. The filters are usually optimized for stationary noise. We developed and tested a method to optimize the filters for the nonstationary noise of scintillation pulses. It is based on offline statistical analysis of coincident waveforms that could be applied during the system initialization phase. Experimental tests were done on a coincidence setup with two detection blocks composed of a fast inorganic scintillator ( LaBr3 or LYSO) coupled to a photodetector (APD or PMT), preamplifiers and prefilters. The signals were sampled at high rate (250 MHz for APDs, 5 GHz for PMTs) and treated offline. The optimization of the filter coefficients for nonstationary noise yielded a significant improvement compared to those optimized for stationary noise, resp. 368 ps and 632 ps fwhm in coincidence for the LYSO-PMT setup. However, little improvement was achieved compared to leading-edge (DLED) and constant fraction (DCFD) discriminator algorithms (resp. 419 ps, 435 ps fwhm). Indeed, the adjustment of thresholds can be interpreted as an optimization for nonstationary noise. Yet, OF is more robust to white noise than DLED or DCFD. The applicability to PET is discussed.

Abstract: In hadrontherapy in order to fully take advantage of the assets of the ion irradiation, the position of the Bragg peak has to be monitored accurately. Here, we investigate a monitoring method relying on the detection in real time of the prompt gamma emitted quasi instantaneously during the nuclear fragmentation processes. Our detection system combines a beam hodoscope and a double scattering Compton camera. The prompt-gamma emission points are reconstructed by intersecting the ion trajectories given by the hodoscope and the Compton cones reconstructed with the camera. We propose here to study in terms of point spread function and efficiency the theoretical feasibility of the emission points reconstruction with our set-up in the case of a photon point source in air. First we analyze the nature of all the interactions which are likely to produce an energy deposit in the three detectors of the camera. It is underlined that upper energy thresholds in both scatter detectors are required in order to select mainly Compton events (one Compton interaction in each scatter detector and one interaction in the absorber detector). Then, we study the influence of various parameters such as the photon energy and the inter-detector distances on the Compton camera response. These studies are carried out by means of Geant4 simulations. We use a source with a spectrum corresponding to the prompt-gamma spectrum emitted during the carbon ion irradiation of a water phantom. In the current configuration, the spatial resolution of the Compton camera is about 6 mm (Full Width at Half Maximum) and the detection efficiency 10^{-5}. Finally, provided the detection efficiency is increased, the clinical applicability of our system is considered.

Abstract: Ion-induced cell killing has been reported to depend on the irradiation dose but also on the projectile parameters. In this paper we focus on two approaches developed and extensively used to predict cell survival in response to ion irradiation: the Local Effect Model and the Katz Model. These models are based on a track-structure description summarized in the concept of radial dose. This latter is sensitive to ion characteristics parameters and gives to both models the ability to predict some important radiobiological features for ion irradiations. Radial dose is however an average quantity, which does not include stochastic effects. These radiation-intrinsic effects are investigated by means of a Monte-Carlo simulation of dose deposition. We show that both models are not fully consistent with the nanometric and microscopic dose deposition statistics., 32 pages ; 8 figures

Abstract: The excitation of theΔ resonance is observed in proton collisions on C, Nb and Pb targets at 0.8 and 1.6 GeV incident energies. The mass E0 and widthΓ of the resonance are determined from the invariant mass spectra of correlated (p, π±)-pairs in the final state of the collision: The mass E0 is smaller than that of the free resonance, however by comparing to intra-nuclear cascade calculations, this reduction is traced back to the effects of Fermi motion, NN scattering and pion reabsorption in nuclear matter.

Abstract: Two-proton correlation functions at small relative momentum have been systematically studied with the large solid angle detector DIOGENE at Saturne for interactions induced by Ne and Ar beams on various targets, and incident energies per nucleon ranging from 200 to 1000 MeV. From these distributions, informations on the space-time structure of the source have been derived as a function of the centrality of the collision, the target-projectile combinations and the incident energy, using the model of Koonin. Special attention has been devoted to take into account all experimental biases in order to get the distorted theoretical correlation curves before comparison to the experimental data. Other interesting conclusions have been obtained when comparing the extracted source radii to the dimensions of the overlapping volume of target by projectile in a pure geometrical model of the collision (clean cut geometry). Some results concerning fragment-fragment small angle correlations are also presented.

Abstract: Recent results from the large solid angle detector “DIOGENE” at Saturne (Saclay), for Ne + A and Ar + A reactions at 400, 600 and 800 MeV per nucleon are presented. Several points are selected: 1) The particles azimuthal emission pattern (with respect to the reaction plane) exhibiting preferential out-of-plane emission at c.m. rapidities, 2) The presence of an appreciable amount of collective flow for asymmetric systems and even for (rather) small projectile masses, 3) The first measurements of “flow” and multiplicities for both positive and negative pions, 4) The first measurement of deltas in central relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Abstract: Triple-differential cross sections of proton-like particles were obtained for Ne+NaF, Ne+Nb and Ne+Pb reactions at 800 MeV per nucleon from quasi-exclusive measurements. Their dependence upon the azimuthal angle with respect to the reaction plane is analyzed. In addition to the usual flow pattern, another component of the azimuthal dependence is observed. It can be parametrized using the second order parameters in Fourier series expansion. The dependence of this component upon transverse momentum, rapidity and impact parameter (multiplicity) is investigated.

Abstract: Emission of light fragments at small angles is studied in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the Diogene plastic wall for both symmetrical and non-symmetrical target-projectile systems with 400 MeV per nucleon and 800 MeV per nucleon incident neon nuclei. Efficiency of multiplicity measurements in the small angle range for the selection of central or peripheral collisions is confirmed for asymmetric systems. Differential production cross sections of Z = 1 fragments show evidence for the existence of two emitting sources. The apparent temperature of each source is obtained from comparison with a thermodynamical model.

Abstract: The advantage of using reinforcing substrate layers with phosphor screens is that they increase the phosphor sensitivity and filter the scattered radiation, while providing a mechanical support for the phosphor layer. A simulation model based on the Monte Carlo code Geant4 was developed to study the influence of the substrate properties (material, thickness) on the phosphor screen spatial response. The optimal substrate/phosphor combinations have been determined at given sensitivity of the screen. Of all studied cases at medium energy (300 keV), a configuration with slight improvement in the screen spatial response has been found. Moreover, the results show that, without degrading the performances of the screen, the phosphor thickness may be significantly reduced (by 35% in the case of a 0.05 mm Pb substrate). Besides, PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET) makes a good mechanical support (of up to minimum 4 mm in thickness) for the phosphor layer. The simulation methodology permitted to study the role played by the X-ray and electron processes inside the substrate layer.

Abstract: In this article, we propose a detailed protocol to carry out measurements of the spatial response of scintillation screens and to assess the agreement with simulated results. The experimental measurements have been carried out using a practical implementation of the slit method. A Monte Carlo simulation model of scintillator screens, implemented with the toolkit Geant4, has been used to study the influence of the acquisition setup parameters and to compare with the experimental results. An algorithm of global stochastic optimization based on a localized random search method has been implemented to adjust the optical parameters (optical scattering and absorption coefficients). The algorithm has been tested for different X-ray tube voltages (40, 70 and 100 kV). A satisfactory convergence between the results simulated with the optimized model and the experimental measurements is obtained.

Abstract: ATLAS; The Tile Calorimeter, which constitutes the central section of the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter, is a non-compensating sampling device made of iron and scintillating tiles. The construction phase of the calorimeter is nearly complete, and most of the effort now is directed toward the final assembly and commissioning in the underground experimental hall. The layout of the calorimeter and the tasks carried out during construction are described, first with a brief reminder of the requirements that drove the calorimeter design. During the last few years a comprehensive test-beam program has been followed in order to establish the calorimeter electromagnetic energy scale, to study its uniformity, and to compare real data to Monte Carlo simulation. The test-beam setup and first results from the data are described. During the test-beam period in 2004, lasting several months, data have been acquired with a complete slice of the central ATLAS calorimeter. The data collected in the test-beam are crucial in order to study algorithms for hadronic energy reconstruction using single particles. The generalization of these algorithms to reconstruct jet energies will be the starting point for numerous physics studies in which jets play a leading role. The results obtained in applying these algorithms to simulated di-jet events are given in the last section of the note.

Abstract: A new combined test of an electromagnetic liquid argon accordion calorimeter and a hadronic scintillating-tile calorimeter was carried out at the CERN SPS. These devices are prototypes of the barrel calorimeter of the future ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The energy resolution of pions in the energy range from 10 to 300 GeV at an incident angle [theta] of about 12° is well described by the expression , where E is in GeV. The response to electrons and muons was evaluated. Shower profiles, shower leakage and the angular resolution of hadronic showers were also studied. Abstract: Prototypes of the FERMI system have been used to read out a prototype of the ATLAS hadron calorimeter in a beam test at the CERN SPS. The FERMI read-out system, using a compressor and a sampling ADC, is compared to a standard charge integrating read-out by measuring the energy resolution of the calorimeter separately with the two systems on the same events. Signal processing techniques have been designed to optimize the treatment of FERMI data. The resulting energy resolution is better than the one obtained with the standard read-out. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A study of high energy muons traversing the ATLAS hadron Tile calorimeter in the barrel region in the energy range between 10 and 300~GeV is presented. Both test beam experimental data and Monte Carlo simulations are given and show good agreement. The Tile calorimeter capability of detecting isolated muons over the above energy range is demonstrated. A signal to background ratio of about 10 is expected for the nominal LHC luminosity ($10^{34} cm^{-2} sec^{-1}$). The photoelectron statistics effect in the muon shape response is shown. The e/mip ratio is found to be $ 0.81 \pm 0.03$; the e/$\mu$ ratio is in the range 0.91 - 0.97. The energy loss of a muon in the calorimeter, dominated by the energy lost in the absorber, can be correlated to the energy loss in the active material. This correlation allows one to correct on an event by event basis the muon energy loss in the calorimeter and therefore reduce the low energy tails in the muon momentum distribution.

Abstract: Velocity correlations of intermediate mass fragments (IMF), produced in collisions of Au+Au at 100, 150, 250, and 400{ital A} MeV beam energy, are extracted from measurements with the 4{pi} detector system (FOPI) in construction stage I at Schwerionen-Synchrotron (SIS) at the Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt. The IMF correlation functions of peripheral and semicentral events are found to be strongly affected by the collective sideward motion of nuclear matter. The sideflow causes an enhancement of correlations at small relative velocities. This enhancement results from the mixing of differently azimuthally oriented events; it vanishes if the events are rotated into a unique reaction plane. Selecting violent central collisions, the comparison of the data with a Coulomb dominated final-state interaction model points to a radius of the expanding and multifragmenting source of {ital R}{sub {ital s}}{congruent}13 fm for 100{ital A} MeV which appears shrinking by 20% when increasing the projectile energy to 400 MeV per nucleon. The deduced source radii are found to depend on the radial explosion energy used in the model. The inclusion of such a collective expansion is necessary for a reasonable description of the experimental single-particle spectra of the IMF. The unique Coulomb suppression of small relativemore » IMF velocities, found for the given beam energy range, is attributed to rather constant averaged next-neighbor distances {l_angle}{ital d}{sub IMF}{r_angle}=8.6{plus_minus}0.2 fm of the IMF charge centers within the source at breakup time.« less

Abstract: We present new experimental data obtained with the FOPI detector at SIS, for the Au + Au heavy-ion collisions at 400 A MeV incident energy. The sideward flow, determined from a method without reaction-plane reconstruction, and the nuclear stopping are studied as a function of the centrality of the collisions. In order to study the nuclear in-medium effects, which act on the NN cross sections and potential and hence on experimental observables like the nuclear-matter flow and stopping, these results are compared with the predictions of two different QMD versions. The first one offers a fully microscopic calculation of the cross sections and potential in the G-matrix formalism and naturally includes the in-medium effects (this version is for the first time confronted with experiment). The second one uses a standard Skyrme potential plus a momentum-dependent term in order to mimic the in-medium effects.

Abstract: The first prototype of a scintillator tile hadron calorimeter with longitudinal tile orientation and wavelength shifting fiber readout has been built and tested with pion, electron and muon beams at the CERN SPS. This innovative geometry combines good performance and a simple and cost effective assembly procedure. Calibration and monitoring of this detector have also been investigated.

Abstract: The results of intranuclear cascade calculations (ideal gas with two-body collisions and no mean field), complemented by a simple percolation procedure, are compared with experimental data on protons and light nuclear fragments ([ital d], [ital t], [sup 3]He, and [sup 4]He) measured in 400 and 800 MeV/nucleon Ne+Nb collisions using a large solid angle detector. The model reproduces quite well global experimental observables like nuclear fragment multiplicity distributions or production cross sections, and nuclear fragment to proton ratios. For rapidity distributions the best agreement occurs for peripheral reactions. Transverse momentum analysis confirms once again that the cascade, although being a microscopic approach, gives too small a collective flow, the best agreement being reached for [ital Z]=2 nuclear fragments. Nevertheless these comparisons are encouraging for further improvements of the model. Moreover, such an approach is easy to extend to any other models that could calculate the nucleon phase space distribution after the compression stage of the reaction, when light nuclear fragments emitted at large angles are constructed from percolation.

Abstract: Correlations of oppositely charged pions produced in interactions of protons and light nuclei with different nuclear targets are investigated. The invariant-mass distributions are analyzed in order to search for new conjectured nuclear effects. Strong and electromagnetic final-state interactions between pions and the Coulomb interaction between pions and the target nucleus are taken into account. An admixture of pion pairs coming from resonance decays is estimated. An enhancement in the low invariant-mass region is observed only for heavy target systems. A shadowing effect due to pion absorption inside the nuclear medium is considered as a possible source of this pattern. Azimuthal π + π − correlations and pion yield dependence on the impact parameter, as well as transport calculations, seem to confirm this assumption.

Abstract: The momentum distributions with respect to the reaction plane for charged pions emitted in Ne-nucleus and Ar-nucleus collisions have been measured with the 4 π detector Diogene at the Saturn synchrotron. The reaction plane is estimated from the baryon momenta, using a standard technique for flow analysis. The pions exhibit a non-zero flow. For asymmetric systems, there is a preferential emission in the direction of the lighter (projectile) nucleus. Such a behaviour contradicts the predictions of INC calculations and is underestimated by QMD calculations which include mean field effects. It can be interpreted with a simple geometrical model in terms of absorption by the spectator nuclear matter.

Abstract: Deuteron spectra at laboratory angles from 30\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} were measured in \ensuremath{\alpha}+(Pb, Cu, and C) collisions at 800, 600, and 200 MeV/nucleon, and \ensuremath{\alpha}+(Pb and C) collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon. The coalescence relation between protons and deuterons was examined for the inclusive part of the spectra. The size of the interacting region was evaluated from the observed coalescence coefficients. The rms radius is typically 4--5 fm, depending of the target mass. The proton and deuteron energy spectra corresponding to central collisions were fitted assuming emission from a single source moving with a velocity intermediate between that of the projectile and the target. The extracted ``temperatures'' are independent of the nature of the emitted particle, indicating that the fragments have a common source. The best fits were achieved for 200- and 400-MeV/nucleon reactions. Spectra of deuteron-like pairs, including real deuterons and neutron-proton pairs that may be contained in a larger nuclear cluster, are compared to the prediction of an intranuclear cascade model incorporating a clustering algorithm based on a classical coalescence prescription. Best agreements between experimental and predicted deuteron-like spectra occur for 800- and 600-MeV/nucleon collisions.

Abstract: Charged pions and light nuclei ({ital p}, {ital d}, {ital t}, {sup 3}He, and {sup 4}He) have been measured in the interaction of proton beams with C, Nb, and Pb targets at 0.8 and 1.6 GeV incident energies, using a large solid angle detector. From slices on the multiplicity of protonlike particles (free protons and protons bound in light fragments), the events have been sorted out into two classes corresponding to more peripheral and more central collisions. For each class of events, the mean value and the dispersion of the {pi}{sup +} and {pi}{sup {minus}} multiplicity distributions have been studied as a function of target mass and incident energy. Comparisons to the Liege intranuclear cascade predictions exhibit some discrepancies which are discussed.

Abstract: In order to study the nuclear collective flow, the triple differential momentum distributions of charged baryons are fitted to a simple anisotropic gaussian distribution, within an acceptance which removes most of the spectator contribution. The adjusted flow angle and aspect ratios are corrected for systematic errors in the determination of the reaction plane. This method has been tested with Monte Carlo simulations and applied to experimental results and intranuclear cascade simulations of argon-nucleus collisions at 400 MeV per nucleon.

Abstract: Diogene, an electronic 4 pi detector, has been built and installed at the Saturne synchrotron in Saclay. The forward angular range (0 degree-6 degrees) is covered by 48 time-of-flight scintillator telescopes that provide charge identification. The trajectories of fragments emitted at larger angles are recorded in a cylindrical 0.4-m3 Pictorial Drift Chamber (PDC) surrounding the target. The PDC is inside a 1-T magnetic field; the axis of the PDC cylinder and the magnetic field are parallel to the beam. Good identification has been obtained for both positive and negative pi mesons and for hydrogen and helium isotopes. Multiplicities in relativistic nucleus-nucleus reactions up to 40 have been detected, limited mainly by the present electronics.

Abstract: Proton-proton small angle correlations have been measured in neon-nucleus collisions, using the 4 pi detector Diogene, at 400 and 800 MeV per nucleon incident energies. Values of the size of the emitting region are obtained by comparison with the Koonin formula, taking into account the biases of the apparatus. The dependence of the density on target mass and incident energy is also analysed.

Abstract: Experimental results concerning proton production in nuclear collisions, obtained at Saturne with the Diogene 4π facility, are compared with the predictions of a thermodynamical model, using collective velocity distributions combined with a statistical thermodynamics in local rest frames. Experimental differential cross sections for alpha + nucleus and Neon + nucleus central collisions at incident energies between 200 and 800 MeV per nucleon are well reproduced by the model, for an angular range 30–110 degrees in the laboratory system. Extracted values of the temperatures are compared with those given by other authors.

Abstract: Mean multiplicities of pi+ and pi- in 4He collisions with C, Cu, and Pb at 200, 600, and 800 MeV/u, and with C and Pb at 400 MeV/u have been measured using the large solid angle detector Diogene. The independence of pion multiplicity on projectile incident energy, target mass and proton multiplicity is studied in comparison with intra-nuclear cascade predictions. The discrepancy between experimental results and theory is pointed out and discussed.

Abstract: We report a photon-photon experiment performed at the Orsay storage rings. 300e + e − , μ + μ − and π + π − pairs produced with low invariant masses have been observed. For each event, one or both protons have been tagged at a very small angle. The γγ→μ + μ − and γγ→π + π − cross-sections have been measured near threshold, the γγ→e + e − process being used as a normalization. The observed invariant mass distribution is compared to theoretical calculations for each of the three processes. The μ + μ − data are in good agreement with QED predictions. The π + π − cross-section, in our experimental acceptance, is somewhat larger than the one expected from the Born terms only.

Abstract: We report on an experimental study of the performance of an electromagnetic calorimeter consisting of thin (0.5 mm diameter) scintillating plastic fibers embedded in lead. Because of the small sampling fraction (3.5% for minimum ionizing particles), this detector is quite compact, with an effective radiation length of 7.2 mm and a Moliere radius of 20 mm. Because of the very frequent shower sampling provided by the fibers, the energy resolution is nevertheless good: 9.2%/√E(GeV) for electromagnetic (e.m.) showers, with a small, angle dependent constant term. A non-uniformity in the response is observed at the 2% level across the calorimeter. In spite of the small sampling fraction the light yield is not a limiting factor in this calorimeter: we measured ∼ 500 photoelectrons per GeV shower energy. The position resolution for electrons and two e.m. showers separation have been studied. The fibers sticking out of the back of the detector do not appear to affect the measurements of hadronic showers.
