CITY councils , *FIFTEENTH century , *DWELLINGS , *KNIGHTS & knighthood - Abstract
This paper seeks to understand the verifiable presence of "knights" and "squires" in the municipal council meetings in Porto in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, using the books of "Atas de Vereação" of the period under analysis, but also by crossing with other documentary sources. We try to understand how this reality coexisted with the privilege that the city had long held and for which it permanently fought for centuries, at least until the reign of D. Manuel I, which prevented the residence and/or stay of noblemen within the walls of the city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the Iberian Middle Age it was thought that the superiority of the nobles over the lower people was related mostly to blood: the nobles, because of their "elevated blood", would be "naturally" compelled to seek honor, while the plebeians, due to their "lower blood", would tend towards vices. Such was the opinion and custom of the audience of the chronicles written by Gomes Eanes de Zurara in the fifteenth century in Portugal. Observing such fact and following rhetorical precepts, Zurara articulates the good ascendancy with a virtuous or vicious conduct to, respectively, praise or vituperate the nobles as characters of their historical narratives. D. Francisco Manuel de Melo da Câmara, Portuguese Ambassador in Holland and England, left a will, which is today in the archives of the Public Record Office (London). This document informs us about the contents of the estate and is revealing about the Ambassador’s social position in 17th century society at the time he drew up the instrument (1674) and subsequently amended it four years later. We use the information in the will to study the social relationships he had with the Portuguese nobility in The Hague and London.

ANECDOTES , *LINEAGE , *GENEALOGY , *PENINSULAS , *SYMBOLISM , *NOBILITY (Social class) - Abstract
One of the peculiarities of Count D. Pedro's Book of Lineages is precisely that it is not only a genealogy. This feature alone makes this kind of “chronicle of medieval noble memory” of Portugal one of the richest and most interesting sources with regard to the knowledge of the aristocracy. The book contains diverse narratives of varying nature, from historical narratives to anecdotes and mythical ones. The latter are capital to the understanding strategies and resources used by the nobility to assert their power. For the most part, they are short texts, but full of symbolism, of course, by their internal constitutions, which tend to explain the origin of a renowned lineage. These stories are not unique to the Portuguese nobility, the mythical ones then seem to report to other counterparts that circulated in much of Europe, composing a common cultural background. There are pages about families from all over the Iberian Peninsula, Galician, Castilian, Navarras and Portuguese. We intend here to analyze how these narratives, through the role of women, built a mythical background legitimacy for the aristocracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract What have we learned by examining a college to prepare the Portuguese nobility in the period of the Marquis of Pombal? At present, it would be unacceptable to use public funds to finance a college restricted to the nobility. Equally unacceptable would be to punish indiscipline with jail sentences. Or even, to accept that some book s were forbidden. In contrast, public schools could charge students. The rectors and their staff were required to have culture and moral qualities. The study regime was very strict. Teachers had to explain the pedagogy used in class and always lead students to apply what they taught in practice. This work attempts to approach the changes in the models of social reproduction of the noble family from the 15thto the 19thcentury in Spain, as well as the emergence of individualism. In this way, starting with a family analysis of two complete noble lineages, the de la Cueva and Fernández de Córdoba, which cover 54 houses or genealogical branches, we have sought to propose a methodological approach to quantitatively analyse the evolution in the forms of social reproduction of the estate in a specific example, as well as the way in which the transformations that lead the noble family from the collective to the individual take place.

- Abstract
The article analyzes the formation of the colonial nobility through royal decrees, from the concessions of the title of Nobleman, of the titles of Knight of the Military Orders, and of coats of arms. These honors, however, did not originate the nobility of blood. In fact, few families were able to maintain the honors and privileges of nobility for a long time. Overseas, the "local nobility" did not rely on titles, but on assets, on the control of the local administration posts and, above all, on military ranks. Using documents and historiography, the article intends to prove that the titles were not a prerequisite for upward social mobility within colonial society. In general, only at the end of their successful lives did the overseas subjects claim and receive the honors of the monarchy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

UIDB/00417/2020 UIDP/00417/2020 In this article we intend to analyse the definition of “palacete”, a typology of building generally defined as a small palace, associated with the rise and ennobling of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century. Although this issue has already been addressed by several art historians (França, 1990; Silva, 1997; Leal, 2005; Carita, 2017) it appears that, when we wish to clarify the identification parameters of this type of buildings, and when applied to the building reality, there are several fluctuations. This way, we propose to study the evolution of the word “palacete”, associating it with a systematic work on epochal sources that has never been carried out until today. Afterwards, we will try to identify the buildings that have been so called, the chronology of their construction and characterize their owners. After carrying out this extensive and critical inventory, we will return to the designation of “palacete” that should have several subtypes.

Based on the importance of the Luso-Castilian border in the context of medieval Hispania and its complexity as a political construction, the objective of this reflection is to assess its impact at the level of manorial groups, either secular or ecclesiastical. The way how these social groups had interpreted the frontier is a central issue for this study. Fidalgos and miles Christi, usually called knights in simple terms, had traced similar tendencies for understandable reasons. Fidalgos and miles Christi were part of the medieval elites that boosted the peninsular exchanges, developing frequent trajectories over borders in medieval Hispania. The aristocracy and the friars of the Military Orders, in particular, those from the international Orders, had a very fluid conception of the frontier, to which family and institutional interests were superimposed. The noblemen found in the border crossing a natural mechanism to circumvent some political problems, arising from conflicts with monarchs, or to materialize strategies of power of some lineages with patrimonies constituted long before the creation of the kingdom of Portugal itself. In turn, the friars of the Military Orders were sometimes members of these families, imbued with non-border behaviors, which were reinforced when they professed in multinational institutions, not overlapping with the delimitations of the political and diplomatic border.

After the Brazilian independence, liberal ideas were adopted and the hierarchical models of the Old Regime began to be rethought. Although the nobility was incorporated into the new Empire it was not in a peaceful and unchallenged way. Some political groups questioned the existence of the nobility in opposition to the hierarchical model of the liberalism, where there would be primacy of merits, capacities and virtues. In the search for a deep incorporation of liberal criteria, certain political actors, called "exalted" and radical liberals, have incorporated terms such as equality and democracy into their vocabulary. The purpose of the article is to analyze the uses of these terms present in the newspaper Nova Luz Brasileira, attributed to this radical and exalted liberal current in order to establish the views on the social hierarchies present in it.

How should one analyze the descendants of the nobility in France? This ancient group has been invented and re-invented many times along its history. The Constitution suppressed it, then later on it was quite visibly rehabilitated, and it is always becoming disaggregated, in France as well as in other countries. How should one approach both this group's extreme diversity and its relative unity, which also have to be questioned as to their fictitiousness? Maybe the dense relationships and exchanges of all sorts between the descendants of the nobility contribute to the maintenance of some form of cohesion more than the symbolic resources they have in common. But this cohesion is becoming ever more difficult. At the present moment of the research, it seems that the descendants of the nobility cannot be analyzed neither as a body nor as a relative group even though these interpretations deserve attention but rather as a space, as long as the dynamism and the processes that crosscut it are analyzed as well.

This article proposes some historiographic considerations on the social stances of some governors who took part in the Portuguese conquests between 1796 and 1803. Firstly, I address the notion of honour and nobility which the Portuguese bourgeoisie supported as opposed to what they called “the ennobled”, that is, the people who ascended to the Crown for their “talent” and university degrees; secondly, I dispute the recruitment of governors and vice-kings, which, historiography says, were positions that gave access to the highest of Portuguese aristocracy and were paid with noble titles by the king. Lastly, I point out how university degrees became an additional – and valuable – asset for the selection of captains general, and I also analyse the first generation of governors – formed after the educational reforms undertaken by Marquis of Pombal –, which contributed to the overseas conquests at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century.

The hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, located next to the palace of the Canto family in the city of Angra (Terceira Island), was built by António Pires do Canto, one of the sons of the Provedor das Armadas Pero Anes do Canto, in mid-sixteenth century. Since its foundation, this hermitage was linked to one of the most influent families of Terceira Island, being place of numerous events of a liturgical-musical nature. This study characterizes the hermitage’s musical activity from a perspective of the relations established with the city’s other religious institutions and their musical presence in one of the Angra’s most noble houses.

D. Francisco Manuel de Melo da Câmara, Portuguese Ambassador in Holland and England, left a will, which is today in the archives of the Public Record Office (London). This document informs us about the contents of the estate and is revealing about the Ambassador's social position in 17th century society at the time he drew up the instrument (1674) and subsequently amended it four years later. We use the information in the will to study the social relationships he had with the Portuguese nobility in The Hague and London. There, he acquired extensive holdings in artworks to decorate the best palaces of the most influential nobles, with whom he socialized for nearly two decades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This paper aims at explaining the legal-political architecture of titles, honors, military orders, distinctions, and pecuniary mercies, about the alleged right of nobility in nineteenth-century Brazilian legal-political culture. In this sense, it seeks to understand how Brazilian law proposed these honorific rewards, and if they were bound to some kind of legal privilege. The main sources are the Constituição Política do Império do Brasil (1824), the doctrinal comments to the constitutional text, and the Anais do Parlamento Brasileiro. The interpretation of these sources allows us to conclude that, in fact, the imperial constitutional system disliked the existence of birth privileges, without, however, being able to completely prevent any remnants of Ancien Régime rights from resisting for some time in the ordinary rule of the Empire.

One of the essential elements of the whole Political Philosophy of Dante Alighieri was your considerations about the aristocracy and the nobility. For him, the two notions are different although in a certain way they correspond to the same matters. This aristocracy, however, it will only reach the divine talent that is the true nobility if it be educated according to the parameters of the Aristotelian philosophy. It is this, in fact, the ethical theme of the Convivio. In Commedia, Dante persists in these ideas. It is exactly for this reason that he reserves the Limbo the great wise persons of the Antiquity. In the one of Monarchia, he treats of the relationships between the supreme nobleman, the emperor, and the princes, the private noblemen that lead the human crowds.

This paper aims to analyze a collection of documents found in the “Camiña” section of the Medinaceli Duchal Archive, which holds a large amount of documents related to the Meneses family from Portugal, counts and marquises of Vila Real and also Governors of Ceuta. With the passing of time, the Meneses family had managed to gather a large estate in the Portuguese kingdom. However, and after the enthronement of the House of Bragança in the 17th century, the unfailing loyalty of the Meneses towards the Spanish monarchy provoked their punishment. The present article analyzes a set of memorial speeches, such as funeral sermons, panegyrics, treatises, chronicles and epitomes – written throughout the seventeenth century in Portugal and some of its conquests. Based on these documents, the intention was to interpret the way in which the elites of the kingdom and of the conquests understood themselves through the rhetoric-poetic representations of the political order, interpreting its hierarchical and spatial dispositions on the basis of Aristotelian-Thomist conceptions, which broadly provided the foundations of the ideals of nobility and royal power, adopted by both: the local elites and the nobles of the Court.

In the last decades of the 10th century, as the central power of the Kingdom of León weakened, the peripherical areas of the Iberia started to progressively gain more autonomy. One of those regions was the «county» of Coimbra, controlled by the descendants of the conqueror of the territory one century earlier. However, it perished before al-Mansūr and his aggressive policy against the northern Christian kingdoms of Iberia after the 987-988 campaigns, even though part of this newly occupied space was retained as a sort of cordovan protectorate by Froila Gonçalves, a son of a former count that accepted paying them homage. He held control of the area in the following three decades, administrating the region and participating in military offensives against the Christian forces in the North, besides very close ties to the Monastery of São Salvador e São Vicente da Vacariça. Thus, as of documents originated from this abbey and Lorvão, in this essay we aim to demonstrate the crucial importance that this nobleman held through his govern in the growth of that institution, before and after his death, helping it to become the most important coenobitic foundation in the region for the 11th century.

Abstract: In this work we will discuss the importance of the concept of nobility for a particular group, the magistrates. Unlike the other royal officials due to the formation in Law, they stood out from the other groups for exercising and interpreting the laws and for representing the most visible face of the Monarchs, Justice. The magistrates were participants of a larger and heterogeneous group in their obligations and personal interests, that is, of the literate ones and that they influenced all the Portuguese modern period. Over time, the indispensability of placing the concept of nobility and its subdivisions in order to construct the profile, the careers, the hierarchies and strategies / stratagems of these individuals and the other constituent groups of the Portuguese administration and its conquests arose.

Abstract: This research addresses to power relations built in the province of Minas Gerais throughout the 19th century, with the central object of analysis the nobleness of the major political groups from Minas Gerais. Starting from a review on Brazilian nobiliary studies, we opted to highlight some of the main theories and intepretive analysis, with the intent to posteriorly deepen the titrations of nobles from Minas Gerais as a powerful indicatory of the construction of power relations in one of the major Brazilian provinces in the 19th century. The analysis on the nobility from Minas Gerais can be revealed as an indicative of settlement processes and construction of power relations on the Brazilian State.
