Abstract
- The article examines the relations of nobility and Military Orders, military religious orders, with social and political power in 14th to 16th century Portugal, discussing research from the author's 2009 doctoral dissertation "Nobreza e Ordens Militares. Relações Sociais e de Poder. (Sécs. XIV a XVI)." Orders analyzed include the Order of the Temple (Knights Templar), the Order of Avis, and the Order of the Hospital (Hospitallers), noting monarch Dom Dinis's relation to these orders. Also mentioned are the interest of the nobility in intervention in North Africa, the genealogies of noble families, and the involvement of nobility in the Military Orders.
