This paper proves that the motion of small-slope vorticity fronts in the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations is approximated on cubically nonlinear timescales by a Burgers–Hilbert equation derived by Biello and Hunter (2010) using formal asymptotic expansions. The proof uses a modified energy method to show that the contour dynamics equations for vorticity fronts in the Euler equations and the Burgers–Hilbert equation are both approximated by the same cubically nonlinear asymptotic equation. The contour dynamics equations for Euler vorticity fronts are also derived.

We consider a family of nonlocal problems that model the effects of transport and vortex stretching in the incompressible Euler equations. Using modulation techniques, we establish stable self-similar blow-up near a family of known self-similar blow-up solutions.

In this paper, we investigate the zero Mach number limit for the three-dimensional compressible Euler–Korteweg equations in the regime of smooth solutions. Based on the local existence theory of the compressible Euler–Korteweg equations, we establish a convergence-stability principle. Then we show that when the Mach number is sufficiently small, the initial-value problem of the compressible Euler–Korteweg equations has a unique smooth solution in the time interval where the corresponding incompressible Euler equations have a smooth solution. It is important to remark that when the incompressible Euler equations have a global smooth solution, the existence time of the solution for the compressible Euler–Korteweg equations tends to infinity as the Mach number goes to zero. Moreover, we obtain the convergence of smooth solutions for the compressible Euler–Korteweg equations towards those for the incompressible Euler equations with a convergence rate.

In this paper, we study the desingularization of multiscale rotating vortex patches with fixed angular velocity to the 2D Euler equations in a disk. We prove the existence of two-parameter multiscale V-states concentrating near two points. These two points are determined by the Robin function to the Green’s function, the Green’s function and angular velocity, and not symmetric about the origin, which is new to the former results. The existence of multiscale V-states with N-folds for $$ N\ge 2 $$ is also proved.

In this paper, we study desingularization of vortices for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in the full plane. We construct a family of traveling vortex pairs for the Euler equations with a general vorticity function, which constitutes a desingularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensities but opposite signs. The results are obtained by using an improved vorticity method.

We prove the global well-posedness of the free interface problem for the two-phase incompressible Euler Equations with damping for the small initial data, where the effect of surface tension is included on the free surfaces. Moreover, the solution decays exponentially to the equilibrium.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to second grade fluid equations, a model for viscoelastic fluids, in an expanding domain. We prove that, the solutions converge to a solution of the incompressible Euler equations in the whole plane, as the elastic response α and the viscosity ν vanish, and the radius of domain becomes infinite. Meanwhile, we also establish precise convergence rates in terms of ν , α and the radius of the family of spatial domains.

We exclude Type I blow-up, which occurs in the form of atomic concentrations of the $$L^2$$ norm for the solution of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. As a corollary we prove nonexistence of discretely self-similar blow-up in the energy conserving scale.

The initial-value problem for a particular bidirectional Whitham system modelling surface water waves is under consideration. This system was recently introduced in Dinvay (2018). It is numerically shown to be stable and a good approximation to the incompressible Euler equations. Here we prove local in time well-posedness. Our proof relies on an energy method and a compactness argument. In addition some numerical experiments, supporting the validity of the system as an asymptotic model for water waves, are carried out.

We consider the initial value problem for the Nernst-Planck equations coupled to the incompressible Euler equations in $\mathbb T^2$. We prove global existence of weak solutions for vorticity in $L^p$. We also obtain global existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions. We show that smooth solutions of the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes equations converge to solutions of the Nernst-Planck-Euler equations as viscosity tends to zero. All the results hold for large data.

Whether the three-dimensional incompressible Euler equations can develop a singularity in finite time from smooth initial data is one of the most challenging problems in mathematical fluid dynamics. This work attempts to provide an affirmative answer to this long-standing open question, by first describing a class of potentially singular solutions to the Euler equations numerically discovered in axisymmetric geometries, and then by presenting evidence from rigorous analysis that strongly supports the existence of such singular solutions. The initial data leading to these singular solutions possess certain special symmetry and monotonicity properties, and the subsequent flows are assumed to satisfy a periodic boundary condition along the axial direction and a no-flow, free-slip boundary condition on the solid wall. The numerical study employs a hybrid 6th-order Galerkin/finite difference discretization of the governing equations in space and a 4th-order Runge--Kutta discretization in time, where the emerging singularity is captured on specially designed adaptive (moving) meshes that are dynamically adjusted to the evolving solutions. With a maximum effective resolution of over (3 x 10¹²)² near the point of the singularity, the simulations are able to advance the solution to a point that is asymptotically close to the predicted singularity time, while achieving a pointwise relative error of O(10⁻⁴) in the vorticity vector and obtaining a 3 x 10⁸-fold increase in the maximum vorticity. The numerical data are checked against all major blowup/nonblowup criteria, including Beale-Kato-Majda, Constantin-Fefferman-Majda, and Deng-Hou-Yu, to confirm the validity of the singularity. A close scrutiny of the data near the point of the singularity also reveals a self-similar structure in the blowup, as well as a one-dimensional model which is seen to capture the essential features of the singular solutions along the solid wall, and for which existence of finite-time singularities can be established rigorously.

We consider the initial value problem of the 3D inviscid Boussinesq equations for stably stratified fluids. We prove the long time existence of classical solutions for large initial data when the buoyancy frequency is sufficiently high. Furthermore, we consider the singular limit of the strong stratification, and show that the long time classical solution converges to that of 2D incompressible Euler equations in some space-time Strichartz norms.

The combined quasi-neutral and inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson-Korteweg system with density-dependent viscosity and cold pressure in the torus T3 is studied. It is shown that, for the well-prepared initial data, the global weak solution of the Navier-Stokes-Poisson-Korteweg system converges strongly to the strong solution of the incompressible Euler equations when the Debye length and the viscosity coefficient go to zero simultaneously. Furthermore, the rate of convergence is also obtained.

We consider the free boundary compressible and incompressible Euler equations with surface tension. In both cases, we provide a priori estimates for the local existence with the initial velocity in H 3 , with the H 3 condition on the density in the compressible case. An additional condition is required on the free boundary. Compared to the existing literature, both results lower the regularity of initial data for the Lagrangian Euler equation with surface tension.

The quasineutral limit of the isothermal Navier–Stokes–Poisson system is rigorously proved when the combined quasineutral and vanishing viscosity limit is considered in a domain with boundary. The convergence of the global weak solution for Navier–Stokes–Poisson system to the strong solution for incompressible Euler equations is obtained.

The travelling wave problem for a particular bidirectional Whitham system modelling surface water waves is under consideration. This system firstly appeared in Dinvay et al. (2019), where it was numerically shown to be stable and a good approximation to the incompressible Euler equations. In subsequent papers (Dinvay, 2019; Dinvay et al., 2019) the initial-value problem was studied and well-posedness in classical Sobolev spaces was proved. Here we prove existence of solitary wave solutions and provide their asymptotic description. Our proof relies on a variational approach and a concentration-compactness argument. The main difficulties stem from the fact that in the considered Euler–Lagrange equation we have a non-local operator of positive order appearing both in the linear and non-linear parts. Our approach allows us to obtain solitary waves for a particular Boussinesq system as well.

We consider the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations on R d for d ≥ 3 . Then we demonstrate the local-in-time solvability of classical solutions with the nondecaying derivatives and finite kinetic energy. Moreover, we establish the blowup criterion of such solutions in terms of the vorticity.

In this paper, we generalize an h-adaptive Runge–Kutta discontinuous Galerkin scheme developed earlier in Zhu et al. (J Sci Comput 69:1346–1365, 2016) for the 1D Vlasov–Poisson system to the guiding center Vlasov model and the 2D time dependent incompressible Euler equations in the vorticity-stream function formulation. The main difficulty of this generalization lies in solving the 2D Poisson equation due to the irregular adaptive mesh with hanging nodes. We adopt a local discontinuous Galerkin method to solve the Poisson equation. The full adaptive algorithm and the related numerical implementation details are included. Extensive numerical tests have been performed to showcase the effectiveness of the adaptive scheme and its advantage over the fixed-mesh scheme in saving computational cost and improving solution quality.

We suggest a new way of defining optimal transport of positive-semidefinite matrix-valued measures. It is inspired by a recent rendering of the incompressible Euler equations and related conservative systems as concave maximization problems. The main object of our attention is the Kantorovich-Bures metric space, which is a matricial analogue of the Wasserstein and Hellinger-Kantorovich metric spaces. We establish some topological, metric and geometric properties of this space, which includes the existence of the optimal transportation path.

In [Grenier-Nguyen], we introduced so called {\em generators} functions to precisely follow the regularity of analytic solutions of Navier Stokes equations. In this short note, we give a presentation of these generator functions and use them to give existence results of analytic solutions to some classical equations, namely to hyperbolic equations, to incompressible Euler equations, and to hydrostatic Euler and Vlasov models. The use of these generator functions appear to be an alternative way to the use of the classical abstract Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem [Asano,Caflisch,Nirenberg,Safonov]., 12 pages

In this note, we consider the radial symmetry property of rotating vortex patches for the 2D incompressible Euler equations in the unit disk. By choosing a suitable vector field to deform the patch, we show that each simply-connected rotating vortex patch D with angular velocity Ω, Ω ≥ max ⁡ { 1 / 2 , ( 2 l 2 ) / ( 1 − l 2 ) 2 } or Ω ≤ − ( 2 l 2 ) / ( 1 − l 2 ) 2 , where l = sup x ∈ D ⁡ | x | , must be a disk. The main idea of the proof, which has a variational flavor, comes from a recent paper of Gomez-Serrano–Park–Shi–Yao, arXiv:1908.01722 , where radial symmetry of rotating vortex patches in the whole plane was studied.

We consider the initial-value problem for the bidirectional Whitham equation, a system which combines the full two-way dispersion relation from the incompressible Euler equations with a canonical shallow-water nonlinearity. This paper mainly concerns the mathematical justification of the asymptotic limit of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with general initial data in the natural energy space over the whole space. We give a rigorous proof of the convergence of the velocity fields defined through the solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to the strong solution of the incompressible Euler equations. Furthermore, we also obtain the rates of the convergence.

In this paper, we are concerned with the rigorous proof of the convergence of the quantum Navier–Stokes-Poisson system to the incompressible Euler equations via the combined quasi-neutral, vanishing damping coefficient and inviscid limits in the three-dimensional torus for general initial data. Furthermore, the convergence rates are obtained.

We show that the 2D Euler equations are not locally well-posed in the sense of Hadamard in the \(C^1\) space and in the Besov space \(B^1_{\infty ,1}\). International audience; We approximate the regular solutions of the incompressible Euler equations by the solution of ODEs on finite-dimensional spaces. Our approach combines Arnold's interpretation of the solution of the Euler equations for incompressible and inviscid fluids as geodesics in the space of measure-preserving diffeomorphisms, and an extrinsic approximation of the equations of geodesics due to Brenier. Using recently developed semi-discrete optimal transport solvers, this approach yields a numerical scheme which is able to handle problems of realistic size in 2D. Our purpose in this article is to establish the convergence of this scheme towards regular solutions of the incompressible Euler equations, and to provide numerical experiments on a few simple test cases in 2D.

The two-dimensional (2D) incompressible Euler equations have been thoroughly investigated and the resolution of the global (in time) existence and uniqueness issue is currently in a satisfactory status. In contrast, the global regularity problem concerning the 2D inviscid Boussinesq equations remains widely open. In an attempt to understand this problem, we examine the damped 2D Boussinesq equations and study how damping affects the regularity of solutions. Since the damping effect is insufficient in overcoming the difficulty due to the “vortex stretching”, we seek unique global small solutions and the efforts have been mainly devoted to minimizing the smallness assumption. By positioning the solutions in a suitable functional setting (more precisely, the homogeneous Besov space B ˚ ∞ , 1 1 ), we are able to obtain a unique global solution under a minimal smallness assumption.

We consider self-similar solutions of the 2d incompressible Euler equations. We construct a class of solutions with vorticity forming algebraic spirals near the origin, in analogy to vortex sheets rolling up into algebraic spirals.

Methods originally developed to study the finite time blow-up problem of the regular solutions of the three dimensional incompressible Euler equations are used to investigate the regular solutions of the Camassa–Holm equation. We obtain results on the relative behaviors of the momentum density, the deformation tensor and the nonlocal term along the trajectories. In terms of these behaviors, we get new types of asymptotic properties of global solutions, blow-up criterion and blow-up time estimate for local solutions. More precisely, certain ratios of the quantities are shown to be vaguely monotonic along the trajectories of global solutions. Finite time blow-up of the accumulated momentum density is necessary and sufficient for the finite time blow-up of the solution. An upper estimate of the blow-up time and a blow-up criterion are given in terms of the initial short time trajectorial behaviors of the deformation tensor and the nonlocal term.

We prove a version of Onsager’s conjecture on the conservation of energy for the incompressible Euler equations in the context of statistical solutions, as introduced recently by Fjordholm et al. (2017). As a byproduct, we also obtain an alternative proof for the conservative direction of Onsager’s conjecture for weak solutions, under a weaker Besov-type regularity assumption than previously known.

International audience; In this paper we propose a large set of analytical solutions (FRESH-ASSESS) for the hydrostatic incompressible Euler system in 2d and 3d. These solutions mainly concern free surface flows but partially free surface flows are also considered. These analytical solutions can be especially useful for the validation of numerical schemes.

In 2000 Constantin showed that the incompressible Euler equations can be written in an "Eulerian-Lagrangian" form which involves the back-to-labels map (the inverse of the trajectory map for each fixed time). In the same paper a local existence result is proved in certain H��lder spaces $C^{1,��}$. We review the Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation of the equations and prove that given initial data in $H^s$ for $n\geq2$ and $s>\frac{n}{2}+1$, a unique local-in-time solution exists on the $n$-torus that is continuous into $H^s$ and $C^1$ into $H^{s-1}$. These solutions automatically have $C^1$ trajectories. The proof here is direct and does not appeal to results already known about the classical formulation. In this paper we study for the incompressible Euler equations the global structure of the bifurcation diagram for the rotating doubly connected patches near the degenerate case. We show that the branches with the same symmetry merge forming a small loop provided that they are close enough. This confirms the numerical observations done in the recent work [10], 32 pages

In their seminal paper "Oscillations and concentrations in weak solutions of the incompressible fluid equations", R. DiPerna and A. Majda introduced the notion of measure-valued solution for the incompressible Euler equations in order to capture complex phenomena present in limits of approximate solutions, such as persistence of oscillation and development of concentrations. Furthermore, they gave several explicit examples exhibiting such phenomena. In this paper we show that any measure-valued solution can be generated by a sequence of exact weak solutions. In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional nematic liquid crystal flows with partial viscosity, and a blow up criterion of smooth solutions is established. This result is analogous to the celebrated Beale-Kato-Majda breakdown criterion for the incompressible Euler equations. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper we study a generalization of self-similar solutions. We show that just as for the solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations these supposedly singular solution reduce to the zero solution.

International audience; We address the global persistence of analyticity and Gevrey-class regularity of solutions to the two and three-dimensional visco-elastic second-grade fluid equations. We obtain an explicit novel lower bound on the radius of analyticity of the solutions that does not vanish as t → ∞, and which is independent of the Rivlin-Ericksen material parameter α. Applications to the damped incompressible Euler equations are also given.
