Appearance of high-oily sunflower seeds with oil content 52–54% in the 60’s of the last century, led to revolutionary changes in raw material base of the fat-and-oil industry, but caused difficulties in the process of its storage and processing due to the morphological structure features and biochemical composition of fruit coat. Overcoming of the main technological disadvantages for high-oily sunflower seeds during dehulling was achieved due to development of an innovative dehulling technology for seeds in frozen state to sub-zero temperatures, which was developed at the technology of fats and fermentation products department of NTU “KhPI”. This paper presents results of experimental study of sunflower variety Ukrainian F1 high-oily seeds dehulling (dehulling coefficient and kernel content coefficient) depending on the temperature change (0–-196°C) and centrifugal dehullerꞌs rotor rotation speed. It has been shown that rational dehulling conditions for dry seeds, which allow to reach maximum dehulling depth (K0=0,99) under conditions of minimum outputs of chaff and oilseed dust, are cooling temperature in the range of -30–-50°C and dehullerꞌs rotation speed 26,7s-1. Based on the literature data and research results, it has been shown that one of the main reasons of dry seeds dehulling coefficient increasing, during the transition from plus to minus temperatures, is a change in basic physicochemical properties of cellulose fibers (the basis of fruit coats biochemical composition) with a solid adsorption surface towards increasing of its strength. According to a special experiment data in relation to change in aggregate state of sunflower oil in temperature range from +20ºС to -196ºС, it was shown that cellulose fibers with adsorbed oil are practically the only component of fruit coat, which increases its plasticity with decreasing temperature. It is noted that fruit coat plasticity increases most significantly in temperature range -30–-50°C, when oil obtain a plasticine-like consistency. This is exactly what temperature range where minimum yield of chaff and oilseed dust is observed, i.e. the highest dehulling quality is achieved. Obtained scientific results of this study make a significant contribution to the theory and practice of oil seeds dehulling, which have structural and compositional features of the fruit coat., Поява у 60-ті роки минулого століття високоолійного насіння соняшнику з олійністю 52–54 % призвело до революційних змін у сировинній базі олійножирової промисловості, але спричинило труднощі під час його зберігання та переробки завдяки морфологічним особливостям будови та біохімічного складу плодової оболонки. Подолання основних технологічних недоліків високоолійного насіння соняшнику під час обрушування досягнуто завдяки запровадженню інноваційної технології обрушування насіння в охолоджуваному стані до мінусових температур, яку розроблено на кафедрі технології жирів та продуктів бродіння НТУ«ХПІ». В статті наведено результати експериментального дослідження обрушування високоолійного насіння соняшнику сорту Український F1 (коефіцієнт обрушування та коефіцієнт збереження ядра) в залежності від зміни температури (0–-196ºС) та швидкості обертання ротору відцентрової насіннєрушки. Показано, що раціональними умовами обрушування сухого насіння, які дозволяють досягнути граничну глибину обрушування (К0 =0,99) за умови мінімальних виходів січки та олійного пилу, є температура охолодження в інтервалі -30–-50 ºС та швидкість обертання насіннєрушки 26,7 с-1. На підставі літературних даних та результатів досліджень проведено детальний теоретичний аналіз щодо причин зміни фізико – механічних властивостей (міцності, пластичності) плодової оболонки насіння соняшнику в умовах дії мінусових температур та відцентрової сили.

Significance: Gas in scattering media absorption spectroscopy (GASMAS) enables noninvasive gas sensing in the body. It is developing as a tool for diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory conditions in neonates. Phantom models with relevant features to the clinical translation of GASMAS technology are necessary to understand technical challenges and potential applications of this technique. State-of-the-art phantoms designed for this purpose have focused on the optical properties and anthropomorphic geometry of the thorax, contributing to the source–detector placement, design, and optimization. Lung phantom mimicking the alveolar anatomy has not been included in the existent models due to the inherent complexity of the tissue. We present a simplified model that recreates inflated alveoli embedded in lung phantom. Aim: The goal of this study was to build a lung model with air-filled structures mimicking inflated alveoli surrounded by optical phantom with accurate optical properties (μa = 0.50 cm − 1 and μs′=5.4 cm−1) and physiological parameters [37°C and 100% relative humidity (RH)], and to control the air volume within the phantom to demonstrate the feasibility of GASMAS in sensing changes in pulmonary air volume. Approach: The lung model was built using a capillary structure with analogous size to alveolar units. Part of the capillaries were filled with liquid lung optical phantom to recreate scattering and absorption, whereas empty capillaries mimicked air filled alveoli. The capillary array was placed inside a custom-made chamber that maintained pulmonary temperature and RH. The geometry of the chamber permitted the placement of the laser head and detector of a GASMAS bench top system (MicroLab Dual O2 / H2O), to test the changes in volume of the lung model in transmittance geometry. Results: The lung tissue model with air volume range from 6.89 × 10 − 7 m3 to 1.80 × 10 − 3 m3 was built. Two measurement sets, with 10 different capillary configurations each, were arranged to increase or decrease progressively (in steps of 3.93 × 10 − 8 m3) the air volume in the lung model. The respective GASMAS data acquisition was performed for both data sets. The maximum absorption signal was obtained for configurations with the highest number of air-filled capillaries and decreased progressively when the air spaces were replaced by capillaries filled with liquid optical phantom. Further studies are necessary to define the minimum and maximum volume of air that can be measured with GASMAS-based devices for different source–detector geometries. Conclusions: The optical properties and the structure of tissue from the respiratory zone have been modeled using a simplified capillary array immersed in a controlled environment chamber at pulmonary temperature and RH. The feasibility of measuring volume changes with GASMAS technique has been proven, stating a new possible application of GASMAS technology in respiratory treatment and diagnostics.

This work reports a modification of a fibrous cellulose material (paper) by the addition of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres doped with 10,12–pentacosadiynoic acid (PDA). The fibres are sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light. When the paper containing PAN–PDA is irradiated with UV light it changes colour to blue as a consequence of interaction of the light with PDA. The colour intensity is related to the absorbed dose, content of PAN–PDA fibres in the paper and the wavelength of UV radiation. The features of the paper are summarised after reflectance spectrophotometry and scanning microscopy analyses. All the properties of the modified paper were tested in accordance with adequate ISO standards. Moreover, a unique method for assessing the unevenness of the paper surface and the quality of printing was proposed by using a Python script (RGBreader) for the analysis of RGB colour channels. The modification applied to the paper can serve as a paper security system. The modified paper can act also as a UV radiation indicator.

Currently, there is an increasing interest in the use of biopolymers in industrial applications to replace petroleum-based additives, since they are abundantly available, renewable and sustainable. Cottonseed protein is a biopolymer that, when used as a modifier, has shown improved performance for wood adhesives and paper products. Thus, it would be useful to explore the feasibility of using cellulose nanomaterials to further improve the performance of cottonseed protein as a paper strength agent. This research characterized the performance of cottonseed protein isolate with/without cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to increase the dry strength of filter paper. An application of 10% protein solution with CNCs (10:1) or CNFs (50:1) improved the elongation at break, tensile strength and modulus of treated paper products compared to the improved performance of cottonseed protein alone. Further analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that the cottonseed protein/nanocellulose composites interacted with the filter paper fibers, imparting an increased dry strength.

SIGNIFICANCE The polymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), has been increasingly used to make tissue simulating phantoms due to its excellent processability, durability, flexibility, and limited tunability of optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. We report on a robust technique to fabricate PDMS-based tissue-mimicking phantoms where the broad range of scattering and absorption properties are independently adjustable in the visible- to near-infrared wavelength range from 500 to 850 nm. We also report on an analysis method to concisely quantify the phantoms' broadband characteristics with four parameters. AIM We report on techniques to manufacture and characterize solid tissue-mimicking phantoms of PDMS polymers. Tunability of the absorption (μa ( λ ) ) and reduced scattering coefficient spectra (μs'(λ)) in the wavelength range of 500 to 850 nm is demonstrated by adjusting the concentrations of light absorbing carbon black powder (CBP) and light scattering titanium dioxide powder (TDP) added into the PDMS base material. APPROACH The μa ( λ ) and μs'(λ) of the phantoms were obtained through measurements with a broadband integrating sphere system and by applying an inverse adding doubling algorithm. Analyses of μa ( λ ) and μs'(λ) of the phantoms, by fitting them to linear and power law functions, respectively, demonstrate that independent control of μa ( λ ) and μs'(λ) is possible by systematically varying the concentrations of CBP and TDP. RESULTS Our technique quantifies the phantoms with four simple fitting parameters enabling a concise tabulation of their broadband optical properties as well as comparisons to the optical properties of biological tissues. We demonstrate that, to a limited extent, the scattering properties of our phantoms mimic those of human tissues of various types. A possible way to overcome this limitation is demonstrated with phantoms that incorporate polystyrene microbead scatterers. CONCLUSIONS Our manufacturing and analysis techniques may further promote the application of PDMS-based tissue-mimicking phantoms and may enable robust quality control and quality checks of the phantoms.

Cellulose is a promising biomass material suitable for high volume applications. Its potential lies in sustainability, which is becoming one of the leading trends in industry. However, there are certain drawbacks of cellulose materials which limit their use, especially their high wettability and low barrier properties, which can be overcome by applying thin coatings. Plasma technologies present a high potential for deposition of thin environmentally friendly and recyclable coatings. In this paper, two different plasma reactors were used for coating two types of cellulose-based substrates with hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO). The changes in surface characteristics were measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface free energy and contact angles measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Successful oleofobization was observed for an industrial scale reactor where pure HMDSO was used in the absence of oxygen.

We present a facile paper-based microfluidic device fabrication technique leveraging off-the-shelf carbon paper for the deposition of hydrophobic barriers using a novel "stencil scratching" method. This exceedingly frugal approach (0.05$) requires practically no technical training to employ. Hydrophobic barriers fabricated using this approach offer a width of 3 mm and a hydrophilic channel width of 849 μm, with an ability to confine major aqueous solvents without leakage. The utility of the device is demonstrated by porting a cell viability assay showing a limit-of-detection (LOD) of 0.6 × 108 CFU mL-1 and bilirubin assay with human serum showing a detection range of 1.76-6.9 mg dL-1 and a limit-of-detection (LOD) of 1.76 mg dL-1. The intuitiveness and economic viability of the fabrication method afford it great potential in the field of point-of-care diagnostics geared towards providing testing infrastructure in resource-scarce regions globally.

Significance: Stimulated emission depletion (STED) microscopy enables nanoscale imaging of live samples, but it requires a specific spatial beam shaping that is highly sensitive to optical aberrations, limiting its depth penetration. Therefore, there is a need for methods to reduce optical aberrations and improve the spatial resolution of STED microscopy inside thick biological tissue. Aim: The aim of our work was to develop and validate a method based on adaptive optics to achieve an a priori correction of spherical aberrations as a function of imaging depth. Approach: We first measured the aberrations in a phantom sample of gold and fluorescent nanoparticles suspended in an agarose gel with a refractive index closely matching living brain tissue. We then used a spatial light modulator to apply corrective phase shifts and validate this calibration approach by imaging neurons in living brain slices. Results: After quantifying the spatial resolution in depth in phantom samples, we demonstrated that the corrections can substantially increase image quality in living brain slices. Specifically, we could measure structures as small as 80 nm at a depth of 90 μm inside the biological tissue and obtain a 60% signal increase after correction. Conclusion: We propose a simple and robust approach to calibrate and compensate the distortions of the STED beam profile introduced by spherical aberrations with increasing imaging depth and demonstrated that this method offers significant improvements in microscopy performance for nanoscale cellular imaging in live tissue.

Negative ion mode paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) suffers from intense background noise and unstable MS signal. For the first time, we reported fluorinated boron nitride nanosheet (h-FBN) assisted negative ion PS-MS for the detection of a series of molecules. We demonstrated that the introduction of h-FBN can greatly improve the detection sensitivity and signal stability in the negative ion mode.

The use of paper as a sustainable packaging material is favored, but it lacks sufficient barrier properties in terms of water repellence and oil resistance. Novel approaches consider active packaging materials or coatings with controlled release providing additional functionality for delivery of specific components to the surface. In this study, the development of a waterborne coating with organic nanoparticles and encapsulated sunflower oils is presented as a system for thermal release of the oil and on-demand tuning of the final barrier properties of the paper substrate. After synthesis of the nanoparticles, it seems that the encapsulation of various grades of sunflower oil (i.e., either poly-unsaturated or mono-unsaturated) strongly affects the encapsulation efficiency and thermal release profiles. The water contact angles are controlled by the oil release and chemical surface composition of the coating upon thermal heating. The oil resistance of the paper improves as a more continuous oil film is formed during thermal release. In particular, the chemical surface composition of the paper coatings is detailed by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy and surface imaging, which provide an analytical quantification tool to evaluate surface coverage, oil delivery, and variations in organic coating moieties. Rapid and sensitive detection of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) in fluids with complex background is an important task for safety quality control in the field of medicine, environment, and food. In this study, a gold foil paper–based aptasensor was developed for the detection of enteropathogenic EPEC O26:K60 with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and magnetic separation technology mediated by Fe3O4@Au composite. The gold foil paper was firstly modified with thiolated capture probe and SERS tag. The thiolated aptamer probe for EPEC was immobilized onto a Fe3O4@Au composite. In the presence of EPEC, highly specific recognition between the aptamer probe and EPEC made the Fe3O4@Au composite partially dissociated from the gold foil paper. This led to a decreased Raman intensity response, which showed an obvious negative linear correlation with increasing concentration of EPEC over a wide concentration range from 10 to 107 CFU/mL under an excitation wavelength of 633 nm. The detection limit was about 2.86 CFU/mL in a buffer solution and a licorice extractum and the detection time was only 2.5 h. The results demonstrate that the gold foil paper–based aptasensor can be an excellent biosensing platform that offers a reliable, rapid, and sensitive alternative for EPEC detection.

The use of pulsed mode scanning electron microscopy cathodoluminescence (CL) for both hyperspectral mapping and time-resolved measurements is found to be useful for the study of hybrid perovskite films, a class of ionic semiconductors that have been shown to be beam sensitive. A range of acquisition parameters is analysed, including beam current and beam mode (either continuous or pulsed operation), and their effect on the CL emission is discussed. Under optimized acquisition conditions, using a pulsed electron beam, the heterogeneity of the emission properties of hybrid perovskite films can be resolved via the acquisition of CL hyperspectral maps. These optimized parameters also enable the acquisition of time-resolved CL of polycrystalline films, showing significantly shorter lived charge carriers dynamics compared to the photoluminescence analogue, hinting at additional electron beam-specimen interactions to be further investigated. This work represents a promising step to investigate hybrid perovskite semiconductors at the nanoscale with CL.

Significance: Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) offers depth-resolved imaging of optical scattering contrast but is limited in sensitivity to optical absorption. Dual-modality imaging combined with the noncontact absorption contrast of photoacoustic remote sensing (PARS) microscopy can augment SD-OCT applications with specific molecular and functional contrasts in an all-optical, fiber-based platform. Aim: To develop a fiber-based multimodal PARS and SD-OCT imaging system, which efficiently uses a common 1050-nm light source for SD-OCT and PARS interrogation. Approach: PARS microscopy has predominantly utilized a 1310-nm interrogation light source to date. Hence, a recent dual-modality PARS and 1050-nm SD-OCT imaging system required three distinct wavelengths including a 532-nm PARS excitation, necessitating a free-space optical architecture with discrete subsystems. Here, we validate the first use of a 1050-nm interrogation wavelength for PARS. This enables the transition to fiber-based interferometry as is standard in modern SD-OCT systems, though infeasible with inclusion of an additional 1310-nm wavelength. PARS interrogation functionality is integrated using a broadband optical circulator. Results: Dual-modality imaging is demonstrated in carbon fiber phantoms and a mouse ear in vivo. SD-OCT provided a 4.5-μm lateral resolution, 8.8-μm axial resolution in air, and >101 dB of sensitivity, and PARS contributed 532-nm optical absorption contrast with a 47-dB SNR, and lateral and axial resolutions of 2.4 and 35 μm, respectively. Total interrogation power was reduced from 90% to 58% of the ANSI limit compared to a previous three-wavelength approach. Conclusions: Adapting PARS to use the 1050-nm SD-OCT light source for interrogation enabled implementation of a fiber-based dual-modality system configuration, with image quality maintained. This will facilitate development of potential applications demanding handheld, catheter-based, or endoscopic form factors.

Changes in the reflectivity of lesion areas during dehydration with forced air at short wavelength infrared (SWIR) wavelengths can be used to assess lesion activity since these changes represent the evaporation dynamics of water from the lesion.AimThe aim of this study is to develop new optical methods for assessing lesion activity on tooth surfaces utilizing the strong water absorption band near 1950-nm.ApproachThe time-resolved reflectivity of 20 active and arrested caries lesions on the surfaces of human extracted teeth was monitored at 1300 to 2000nnm using broadband light sources and an extended range InGaAs camera during drying with air.ResultsMultiple parameters representing the rate of change of the lesion reflectivity correlated with the presence of a highly mineralized outer surface zone indicative of lesion arrest measured with x-ray microtomography (microCT). Performance at 1950-nm was higher than for other wavelengths.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that SWIR imaging near 1950-nm has great potential for the assessment of lesion activity.

N, Cl-doped carbon dots (N, Cl-CDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method from rhodamine B (RhB) and ethylenediamine (EDA). The resulting N, Cl-CDs exhibited fascinating solvent dependence and strict excitation independence. As the polarity of the solvent increased (from tetrahydrofuran (THF) to water), the emission spectrum of N, Cl-CDs was redshifted and the fluorescence efficiency decreased, which were attributed to hydrogen bond-induced aggregation. Taking advantage of these attributes, the N, Cl-CDs were used as suitable probes for fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode detection of water in THF. The linear relationship was 0.5–100% water with the detection limit down to 0.093%. Moreover, the sensing platform was converted into a paper-based sensor for handy, real-time, and visible humidity sensing. N, Cl-CDs/PVA films were fabricated and realized continuously tunable solid-state fluorescence, further expanding their practical application.

Manufacturing natural-based high-performance composites are becoming of greater interest to the composite manufacturers and to their end-users due to their bio-degradability, low cost and availability. Yarn based textile architecture is commonly used in manufacturing these composites due to their excellent formability. However, for using natural based yarn as a reinforcing architecture in high load-bearing structural composite applications, a significant improvement in mechanical performance is required. Particularly, jute fibre yarn suffers from poor mechanical properties due to the presence of a fibrillar network, polysaccharides and other impurities in the fibre. For achieving this, we use aqueous glycine treatment (10%, W/V) on alkali(0.5 %, W/V) and untreated jute yarns for the first time. The glycine treatment on alkali-treated jute yarns (ATG) shows a huge improvement in tensile strength and strain values by almost ∼105% and ∼50 % respectively compared to untreated jute yarns (UT) because of the strong interactions and bonds developed between glycine, alkali and jute yarns. It is believed that the newly developed glycine treated jute yarns will be helpful to promote jute yarns in composite industries where load-bearing is the primary requirement and replace their synthetic counterparts.

Typically, triboelectric energy harvesters rely on contact-generated charges between pairs of materials situated at opposite ends of the triboelectric series. However, very few biocompatible polymeric materials exist at the ‘tribopositive’ end of the triboelectric series. In order to further explore the use of triboelectric energy harvesting devices within the body, it is necessary to develop more biocompatible tribopositive materials and look into ways to improve their triboelectric performance in order to enhance the harvested power output of these devices. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is a tribopositive biocompatible polymer, frequently used in biomedical applications. Here, we present a way to improve the triboelectric output of nanostructured PLLA through fine control of its crystallinity via a customised template-assisted nanotube (NT) fabrication process. We find that PLLA NTs with higher values of crystallinity (∼41%) give rise to a threefold enhancement of the maximum triboelectric power output as compared to NTs of the same material and geometry but with lower crystallinity (∼13%). Our results thus pave the way for the production of a viable polymeric and biocompatible tribopositive material with improved power generation, for possible use in implantable triboelectric nanogenerators.

Cellulose nanopapers provide diverse, strong and lightweight templates prepared entirely from sustainable raw materials, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). Yet the strength of CNFs has not been fully capitalized in the resulting nanopapers and the relative influence of CNF strength, their bonding, and biological origin to nanopaper strength are unknown. Here, we show that basic principles from paper physics can be applied to CNF nanopapers to illuminate those relationships. Importantly, it appeared that ~ 200 MPa was the theoretical maximum for nanopapers with random fibril orientation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the contrast in tensile strength for nanopapers prepared from bacterial cellulose (BC) and wood-based nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC). Endemic amorphous polysaccharides (hemicelluloses) in NFC act as matrix in NFC nanopapers, strengthening the bonding between CNFs just like it improves the bonding between CNFs in the primary cell wall of plants. The conclusions apply to all composites containing non-wovenfiber mats as reinforcement.

Significance: High density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) as applied in functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is largely limited to continuous wave (CW) data. Using a single modulation frequency, frequency domain (FD) HD-DOT has recently demonstrated better localization of focal activation as compared to CW data. We show that combining CW and FD measurements and multiple modulation frequencies increases imaging performance in fNIRS. Aim: We evaluate the benefits of multiple modulation frequencies, combining different frequencies as well as CW data in fNIRS HD-DOT. Approach: A layered model was used, with activation occurring within a cortex layer. CW and FD measurements were simulated at 78, 141, and 203 MHz with and without noise. The localization error, full width half maximum, and effective resolution were evaluated. Results: Across the average of the three metrics, at 141 MHz, FD performed 8.4% better than CW, and the combination of CW and FD was 21.7% better than CW. FD measurements at 203 MHz performed 5% better than 78 MHz. Moreover, the three combined modulation frequencies of FD and CW performed up to 3.92% better than 141 MHz alone. Conclusions: We show that combining CW and FD measurements offers better performance than FD alone, with higher modulation frequencies increasing accuracy. Combining CW and FD measurements at multiple modulation frequencies yields the best overall performance.

Significance: Longitudinal tracking of hemodynamic changes in the breast has shown potential for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) outcome prediction. Spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) could be suitable for frequent monitoring of shallow breast tumors, but strong sensitivity to superficial absorbers presents a challenge. Aim: We investigated the efficacy of a two-layer SFDI inverse model that accounts for varying melanin concentration in the skin to improve discrimination of optical properties of deep tissue of the breast. Approach: Hemodynamic changes in response to localized breast compression were measured in 13 healthy volunteers using a handheld SFDI device. Epidermis optical thickness was determined based on spectral fitting of the model output and used to calculate subcutaneous optical properties. Results: Optical properties from a homogeneous model yielded physiologically unreasonable absorption and scattering coefficients for highly pigmented volunteers. The two-layer model compensated for the effect of melanin and yielded properties in the expected range for healthy breast. Extracted epidermal optical thickness was higher for higher Fitzpatrick types. Compression induced a decrease in total hemoglobin consistent with tissue blanching. Conclusions: The handheld SFDI device and two-layer model show potential for imaging hemodynamic responses that potentially could help predict efficacy of NAC in patients of varying skin tones.

Micro-photoluminescence maps reveal micron-scale spatial variation in intensity, peak emission energy and bandwidth across InGaN/GaN quantum wells. To investigate the effect of this spatial variation on measurements of the dependence of emission efficiency on carrier density, excitation power-dependent emission was collected from a bright and dark region on each of blue-and green emitting samples. The onset of efficiency droop was found to occur at a greater carrier density in the dark regions than in the bright, by factors of 1.2 and 1.8 in the blue and green-emitting samples, respectively. By spatially integrating the emission from progressively larger areas, it is also shown that collection areas greater than ∼50 μm in diameter are required to reduce the intensity variation to less than 10%.

Rapid diagnosis by using small, simple, and portable devices could represent one of the best strategies to limit the damage and contain the spread of viral, bacterial or protozoa diseases, principally when they can be transmitted by air and are highly contagious, as some respiratory viruses are. The presence of antibodies in blood or serum samples is not the best option for deciding when a person must be quarantined to stop transmission of disease, given that cured patients have antibodies, so the best diagnosis methods rely on the use of nucleic acid amplification procedures. Here we present a very simple device and detection principle, based on paper discs coupled to contactless conductivity (C4D) sensors, can provide fast and easy diagnostics that are needed when an epidemic outbreak develops. The paper device presented here solves one of the main drawbacks that nucleic acid amplification tests have when they are performed outside of central laboratories. As the device is sealed before amplification and integrally disposed in this way, amplimers release cannot occur, allowing repetitive testing in the physician’s practice, ambulances, or other places that are not prepared to avoid cross-contamination of new samples. The use of very low volume samples allows efficient reagent use and the development of low cost, simple, and disposable point-of-care diagnostic systems., Author summary In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized Chagas Disease as a neglected tropical disease. Meanwhile the serological tests, recommended by WHO, can be performed for chronic disease diagnosis, the nucleic acid amplification tests must be performed for the detection of the acute phase of the disease. Although the existing laboratory diagnosis tests for Chagas Disease are sensitive and highly reproducible, they cannot be performed in rural, low infrastructure environments, where this disease prevails. In this sense, the use of simple and portable analytical devices may be able to offer an affordable solution to this problem, allowing fast sampling, diagnosis and treatment prescription in one simple and fast intervention, as the performed by short term medical missions. In this study we show for the first time a diagnosis test comprising low cost materials and employing a contactless and label-free conductivity detection system that is used to read the result of a nucleic acid amplification reaction. The test showed high sensitivity for Chagas Disease diagnosis showing the potential to be used in rural and low income places.

Membrane emulsification is a promising new technique that can be deployed as a scalable modular conduit for the consistent and continuous production of single and complex emulsions. This work reports on the development of a manufacturing platform based on membrane emulsification for the first time for microcapsule-based self-healing cementitious materials. The feasibility of single and double emulsion production with wall formation as a secondary step through UV radical polymerisation was explored using a discrete membrane emulsification dispersion cell. The operational parameters (pressure, dispersed phase flux, temperature, shear rate) were established for the specific phase characteristics (viscosity, density, interfacial tension) to achieve control of emulsion droplets and maintain a high encapsulation of core content (high payload). Microcapsules with sodium silicate core and an average diameter of ∼130 μm were produced. Microcapsules were shown to achieve high payload (∼89%). Moreover their thermal stability was characterised and their release performance in the cementitious matrix established. The results demonstrated the capability of membrane emulsification to produce microcapsules with an aqueous core for use in self-healing of cementitious materials.

Airflow sensor is a crucial component for monitoring environmental airflow conditions in many engineering fields, especially in the field of aerospace engineering. However, conventional airflow sensors have been suffering from issues such as complexity and bulk in structures, high cost in fabrication and maintenance, and low stability and durability. In this work, we developed a facile direct-writing method for fabricating a low-cost piezoresistive element aiming at high-performance airflow sensing, in which a commercial pen was utilized to drop solutions of single-walled carbon nanotubes onto tissue paper to form a piezoresistive sensing element. The encapsulated piezoresistive element was tested for electromechanical properties under two loading modes: one loading mode is the so-called pressure mode in which the piezoresistive element is pressed by a normal pressure, and another mode is the so-called bending mode in which the piezoresistive element is bended as a cantilever beam. Unlike many other developed airflow sensors among which the sensing elements are normally employed as cantilever beams for facing winds, we designed a fin structure to be incorporated with the piezoresistive element for airflow sensing, the main function of the fin is to face winds instead of the piezoresistive element, and subsequently transfer and enlarge the airflow pressure to the piezoresistive element for the normal pressure loading mode. With this design, the piezoresistive element can also be protected by avoiding experiencing large strains and direct contact with external airflows so that the stability and durability of the sensor can be maintained. Moreover, we experimentally found that the performance parameters of the airflow sensor could be effectively tuned by varying the size of the fin structure. When the fin sizes of the airflow sensors were 20 mm, 30 mm, and 40 mm, the detection limits and sensitivities of the fabricated airflow sensors were measured as 8.2 m/s, 6.2 m/s, 3.2 m/s, 0.0121 (m/s)−2, 0.01657 (m/s)−2, and 0.02264 (m/s)−2, respectively. Therefore, the design of the fin structure could pave an easy way for adjusting the sensor performance without changing the sensor itself toward different application scenarios.

Recent theoretical studies have demonstrated that the behaviour of molecular knots is a sensitive indicator of polymer structure. Here, we use knots to verify the ability of two state-of-the-art algorithms—configuration assembly and hierarchical backmapping—to equilibrate high-molecular-weight (MW) polymer melts. Specifically, we consider melts with MWs equivalent to several tens of entanglement lengths and various chain flexibilities, generated with both strategies. We compare their unknotting probability, unknotting length, knot spectra, and knot length distributions. The excellent agreement between the two independent methods with respect to knotting properties provides an additional strong validation of their ability to equilibrate dense high-MW polymeric liquids. By demonstrating this consistency of knotting behaviour, our study opens the way for studying topological properties of polymer melts beyond time and length scales accessible to brute-force molecular dynamics simulations.

Significance: Corneal diseases is a major cause of reversible blindness in the world. Monitoring the progression of human corneal edema or corneal scarring to prevent the disease entering into the end stage is crucial. Aim: We present a method for sensing human corneal composition at different depths, namely focused on the epithelium and stromal layer, using high-sensitivity terahertz (THz) broadband spectroscopy. Approach: From the proposed methodology, the THz temporal and absorption spectra of human corneas at different edema stages have been studied. THz wave signals were collected from the direct reflection and four other collection points along the THz wave propagation direction as reviewed from the simulation THz electrical field. Result: Our results show that the epithelium layer acts as a good barrier to maintain hydration level of the stroma, and the quality of the epithelium can be used to predict the level of corneal swelling in corneal edema. At the detection points near to the incident point, the THz frequency spectra demonstrated interference oscillation behavior. At the final edema observing time, results showed that the epithelium lose its barrier properties. The intactness of the epithelium can be used to predict the edema severity in the final stage. When the detection points are further away from the incident point, the THz spectra are believed to contain information from stromal layer. Stromal absorption spectra demonstrated correlation with optical coherence tomography thickness results. Conclusion: The hydration concentration from stromal layer was further quantitatively calculated. At the end of the experiment, all the corneal hydration levels reach to the same value which shows that the edema hydration has reached maximum saturation. The information of individual sublayers of the cornea is obtained by characterizing noninvasively with the use of THz spectroscopy. To our knowledge, this is the first report of using THz for noninvasive characterization of sublayers of the cornea.

Significance: Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) is an emerging noninvasive, diffuse optical modality that purportedly enables direct measurements of microvasculature blood flow. Functional optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) can resolve blood flow in vessels as fine as capillaries and thus has the capability to validate key attributes of the DCS signal. Aim: To characterize activity in cortical vasculature within the spatial volume that is probed by DCS and to identify populations of blood vessels that are most representative of the DCS signals. Approach: We performed simultaneous measurements of somatosensory-evoked cerebral blood flow in mice in vivo using both DCS and OCT-A. Results: We resolved sensory-evoked blood flow in the somatosensory cortex with both modalities. Vessels with diameters smaller than 10 μm featured higher peak flow rates during the initial poststimulus positive increase in flow, whereas larger vessels exhibited considerably larger magnitude of the subsequent undershoot. The simultaneously recorded DCS waveforms correlated most highly with flow in the smallest vessels, yet featured a more prominent undershoot. Conclusions: Our direct, multiscale, multimodal cross-validation measurements of functional blood flow support the assertion that the DCS signal preferentially represents flow in microvasculature. The significantly greater undershoot in DCS, however, suggests a more spatially complex relationship to flow in cortical vasculature during functional activation.

In this work, a self-circulation oxygen-hydrogen peroxide-oxygen (O2-H2O2-O2) system with photogenerated electrons as fuel and highly active hemin monomers as operators was engineered for ultrasensitive cathode photoelectrochemical bioassay of microRNA-141 (miRNA-141) using a stacked sealed paper device. During the circulation, the photogenerated electrons from BiVO4/Cu2O photosensitive structures assembled on a reduced graphene oxide paper electrode first reduced the electron acceptors (dissolved O2) to H2O2, which was then catalytically decomposed by hemin monomers to generate O2 again. The regenerated O2 continued to be reduced, which made O2 and H2O2 stuck in the infinite loop of O2-H2O2-O2 accompanied by the fast consumption of photogenerated electrons, generating an amplified photocurrent signal. When a target existed, a duplex-specific nuclease-induced target recycling reaction with dual trigger DNA probes as the output was performed to initiate the assembly of bridge-like DNA nanostructures, which endowed the self-circulation system with dual destruction functions as follows. (i) Reduced fuel supply: the assembled DNA bridges acting as a negatively charged barrier prevented the photogenerated electrons from participating in the O2 reduction to H2O2. (ii) Incapacitation of operators: DNA bridging induced the dimerization of hemin monomers linked on the DNA hairpins to catalytically inactive hemin dimers, leading to the abortive regeneration of O2. These destruction functions resulted in the circulation interruption and a remarkably decreased photocurrent signal. Thus, the developed cathode photoelectrochemical biosensing platform achieved ultrasensitive miRNA-141 detection with a linear range of 0.25 fM to 1 nM and a detection limit of 83 aM, and it also exhibited high accuracy, selectivity, and practicability.

Molecularly imprinted polymers are efficient and selective adsorbents which act as artificial receptors for desired compounds with the ability to recognize the size, shape, and functional groups of the compounds simultaneously. A molecularly imprinted polymer is prepared by the polymerization of functional monomers around a template (analyte) molecule. Afterward, the removal of the template from the polymer matrix leaves a selective cavity behind. The fabrication and development of molecularly imprinted polymers grew rapidly, due to their low cost, simple preparation, selectivity, sensitivity, and stable physicochemical properties. Traditionally, molecularly imprinted polymers can be synthesized using two main methods, namely bulk and surface imprinting. For more efficient use of the latter method, researchers have developed molecularly imprinted polymers grafted on the solid-phase matrix (substrate). This grafting technique would be particularly useful for surface imprinting of macromolecules, such as proteins. Cellulose fibers of papers with unique properties such as being abundant, retaining a porous structure, having good adsorption properties, and possessing hydroxyl groups naturally have gained much attention as substrate. The goal of this review is to introduce molecularly imprinted polymer-grafted or molecularly imprinted polymer-coated paper, as an interesting, simple, and efficient method in the detection and separation of small and large molecules. Therefore, in the present paper, several recent preparation techniques and applications of molecularly imprinted polymer-grafted paper are reviewed and discussed in detail. Green, cost-effective, selective, and sensitive paper-based sensor prepared via grafting molecularly imprinted polymer on paper surface with the potential use for online detection trace of analytes in the point-of-care testing.

Significance: Light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) is a powerful technique for highspeed volumetric functional imaging. However, in typical light-sheet microscopes, the illumination and collection optics impose significant constraints upon the imaging of non-transparent brain tissues. We demonstrate that these constraints can be surmounted using a new class of implantable photonic neural probes.Aim: Mass manufacturable, silicon-based light-sheet photonic neural probes can generate planar patterned illumination at arbitrary depths in brain tissues without any additional micro-optic components.Approach: We develop implantable photonic neural probes that generate light sheets in tissue. The probes were fabricated in a photonics foundry on 200-mm-diameter silicon wafers. The light sheets were characterized in fluorescein and in free space. The probe-enabled imaging approach was tested in fixed, in vitro, and in vivo mouse brain tissues. Imaging tests were also performed using fluorescent beads suspended in agarose.Results: The probes had 5 to 10 addressable sheets and average sheet thicknesses Conclusions: The neural probes can lead to new variants of LSFM for deep brain imaging and experiments in freely moving animals.

Developing green and simple methods for the preparation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) is of great significance. Herein, a green deep eutectic solvent (DES) system based on choline chloride (ChCl) and citric acid (CA) is employed to pretreat cellulose fibers for the preparation of CNFs. The effect of the pretreatment temperature on the chemo-physical properties of the CNFs is comprehensively investigated. A high CNFs yield of up to 84.19% can be achieved under optimized conditions. The optimal CNFs show a narrow diameter distribution and length up to several microns, high crystallinity and thermal stability, as well as excellent dispersibility in water. Furthermore, semi-transparent and flexible cellulose nanopaper (CNP) was fabricated through a facile vacuum filtration process. The optimal CNP shows high tensile strength (175.15 MPa) and toughness (7.51 MJ/m3). Therefore, this work provides a sustainable and facile approach to fabricate CNFs and CNP, which can be potentially used for various high-tech applications.

Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy has been used to characterise strain coupling and relaxation behaviour associated with magnetic/magnetoelectric phase transitions in GdMnO3, TbMnO3 and TbMn0.98Fe0.02O3 through their influence on elastic/anelastic properties. Acoustic attenuation ahead of the paramagnetic ��� colinear-sinusoidal/incommensurate/antiferromagnetic transition at ~41 K correlates with anomalies in dielectric properties and is interpreted in terms of Debye-like freezing processes. A loss peak at ~150 K is related to a steep increase in electrical conductivity with a polaron mechanism. The activation energy, Ea, of ��� ~0.04 eV from a loss peak at ~80 K is consistent with the existence of a well-defined temperature interval in which the paramagnetic structure is stabilised by local, dynamic correlations of electric and magnetic polarisation that couple with strain and have relaxation times in the vicinity of ~10-6 s. Comparison with previously published data for Sm0.6Y0.4MnO3 confirms that this pattern may be typical for multiferroic orthorhombic RMnO3 perovskites (R = Gd, Tb, Dy). A frequency-dependent loss peak near 10 K observed for TbMnO3 and TbMn0.98Fe0.02O3, but not for GdMnO3, yielded Ea ��� ~0.002 eV and is interpreted as freezing of some magnetoelastic component of the cycloid structure. Small anomalies in elastic properties associated with the incommensurate and cycloidal magnetic transitions confirm results from thermal expansion data that the magnetic order parameters have weak but significant coupling with strain. Even at strain magnitudes of ~0.1-1 ���, polaron-like strain effects are clearly important in defining the development and evolution of magnetoelectric properties in these materials. Strains associated with the cubic - orthorhombic transition due to the combined Jahn-Teller/octahedral tilting transition in the vicinity of 1500 K are 2-3 orders of magnitude greater. It is inevitable that ferroelastic twin walls due to this transition would have significantly different magnetoelectric properties from homogeneous domains due to magnetoelastic coupling with steep strain gradients., This work was funded by EPSRC Grant No. EP/ P024904/1 (UK). Purpose. To develop a framework to include oxygenation effects in radiation therapy treatment planning which is valid for all modalities, energy spectra and oxygen levels. The framework is based on predicting the difference in DNA-damage resulting from ionising radiation at variable oxygenation levels. Methods. Oxygen fixation is treated as a statistical process in a simplified model of complex and simple damage. We show that a linear transformation of the microscopic oxygen fixation process allows to extend this to all energies and modalities, resulting in a relatively simple rational polynomial expression. The model is expanded such that it can be applied for polyenergetic beams. The methodology is validated using Microdosimetric Monte Carlo Damage Simulation code (MCDS). This serves as a bootstrap to determine relevant parameters in the analytical expression, as MCDS is shown to be extensively verified with published empirical data. Double-strand break induction as calculated by this methodology is compared to published proton experiments. Finally, an example is worked out where the oxygen enhancement ratio (OER) is calculated at different positions in a clinically relevant spread out Bragg peak (SOBP) dose deposition in water. This dose deposition is obtained using a general Monte Carlo code (FLUKA) to determine dose deposition and locate fluence spectra. Results. For all modalities (electrons, protons), the damage categorised as complex could be parameterised to within 0.3% of the value calculated using microdosimetric Monte Carlo. The proton beam implementation showed some variation in OERs which differed slightly depending on where the assessment was made; before the SOBP, mid-SOBP or at the distal edge. Environment oxygenation was seen to be the more important variable. Conclusions. An analytic expression calculating complex damage depending on modality, energy spectrum, and oxygenation levels was shown to be effective and can be readily incorporated in treatment planning software, to take into account the impact of variable oxygenation, forming a first step to an optimised treatment based on biological factors.

Highlights • The alkaline – HC miscanthus fibers lignin content was decreased by 41.54% • Pulp fiber shape characteristics were negatively influenced due to cavitation force. • Results could verify the efficacy of alkaline - HC pretreatment as a delignification method. • The alkaline – HC process displayed similar results with other conventional methods. • Miscanthus grass fibers could potentially substitute hardwood fibers in pulp blends., One way of satisfying increased market demand and simultaneously achieving a reduced environmental load in the industrial paper production is the use of fibrous agricultural residues. The aims of this study were i) to investigate the effect of alkaline – hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) pre-treatments on the delignification of Miscanthus × giganteus stalks (MGS) and ii) establishing the suitability of MGS as feedstock and their exploitation in pulp and paper manufacturing. It was demonstrated that the proposed treatment is an efficient delignification method for the non-wood fiber sources, such as miscanthus. A significant outcome of this work was the observation that HC treatment preserved the fibres lengths and surface quality of raw MGS, but at the same time increased the amount of kinked and curled fibers present in cavitated miscanthus fibers. The average miscanthus fiber length was found to be relatively short at 0.45 (±0.28) mm, while the slenderness ratio, the flexibility coefficient and Runkel ratio values were calculated to be 28.13, 38.16 and 1.62, respectively. The estimated physical properties of MGS pulp hand-sheets were 24.88 (±3.09) N m g−1 as the tensile index, 0.92 (±0.06) kPa m2 g−1 as the burst index and 4.0 (±0.37) mN m2 g−1 as the tear index. Overall the current work demonstrated effective use of hydrodynamic cavitation for improving the processing in pulp and paper manufacturing.

Significance: Mid-infrared (MIR) light refers to wavelengths ranging from 3 to 30 μm and is the most attractive spectral region for ablation of soft and hard tissues. This is because building blocks of biological tissue, such as water, proteins, and lipids, exhibit molecular vibrational modes in the MIR wavelengths that result in strong MIR light absorption. To date, researchers investigating MIR lasers for surgical applications have used bulky light sources, such as free electron lasers, nonlinear light generators, and carbon dioxide lasers. We demonstrate the use of a tiny (a few microns wide, a few millimeters long) MIR interband cascade laser (ICL) for surgical thermal ablation applications. Aim: Our goal is to demonstrate the use of an ICL for surgical thermal ablation and demonstrate its efficacy in ablating normal fibroblasts and primary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma tumor cells (C1619). Approach: We conducted Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of healthy and cancerous tissue samples, which indicated that the absorption of tumor tissue is higher than healthy tissue around 3.3-μm wavelength. These results enabled us to select an ICL emission wavelength, λ, of 3.3 μm to probe normal fibroblast and primary undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma cell survival after ICL exposure. Results: We show that the absorption of tumorous tissue is higher than that of healthy tissues around the 3-μm MIR wavelength. We demonstrate that the ICL is able to ablate cancer cells at very low-power levels that can be clinically implemented but that this effect does not appear to be specific to C1619 when compared to normal fibroblasts. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that ICLs may represent an exciting new avenue toward precise laser-based thermal ablation.

In view of its application in optoelectronic devices, understanding transient photo-induced effects is crucial. Here, we investigate by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy BP in its pristine state and in the presence of Stark splitting, chemically induced by Cs ad-sorption. We show that photo-injected carriers trigger bandgap renormalization, and a concurrent valence band flattening caused by Pauli blocking. In biased samples, photo-excitation leads to a long-lived (ns) surface photovoltage of few hundreds mV that counterbalances the Cs-induced surface band bending. This allows us to disentangle bulk from surface electronic states, and to clarify the mechanism underlying the band inversion observed in bulk samples.

Significance: Optical fluorescence spectroscopy technique has been explored extensively to quantify both glucose uptake and mitochondrial metabolism with proper fluorescent probes in small tumor models in vivo. However, it remains a great challenge to rapidly quantify the intrinsic metabolic fluorophores from the optically measured fluorescence spectra that contain significant distortions due to tissue absorption and scattering. Aim: To enable rapid spectral data processing and quantify the in vivo metabolic parameters in real-time, we present an empirical ratio-metric method for rapid fluorescence spectra attenuation correction with high accuracy. Approach: A first-order approximation of intrinsic fluorescence spectra can be obtained by dividing the fluorescence spectra by diffuse reflectance spectra with some variable powers. We further developed this approximation for rapid extraction of intrinsic key metabolic probes (2-NBDG for glucose uptake and TMRE for mitochondrial function) by dividing the distorted fluorescence spectra by diffuse reflectance intensities recorded at excitation and emission peak with a pair of system-dependent powers. Tissue-mimicking phantom studies were conducted to evaluate the method. Results: The tissue-mimicking phantom studies demonstrated that our empirical method could quantify the key intrinsic metabolic probes in near real-time with an average percent error of ∼5%. Conclusions: An empirical method was demonstrated for rapid quantification of key metabolic probes from fluorescence spectra measured on a tissue-mimicking turbid medium. The proposed method will potentially facilitate real-time monitoring of key metabolic parameters of tumor models in vivo using optical spectroscopy, which will significantly advance translational cancer research.

The development of low cost, portable, and disposable biosensors for equipment-free and naked-eye biosensing is in eager demand for their widespread application in biomedical field, but it is still a challenge. Herein, we propose a novel paper analytical device (PAD) for truly equipment-free and naked-eye biosensing using dopamine as the chromogenic agent based on target-initiated catalyzed oxidation reaction. The dopamine-functionalized PAD (DPAD) possesses a significant three-dimensional net structure, excellent hydrophilicity, and unique response toward G-quadruplex DNAs against other DNAs, benefiting the bio/chemo reaction occurrence to assay target biomolecules. In light of the exceptional properties, the fabricated DPAD was applied in the analysis of Dam MTase through target-triggered exponential isothermal amplification. The recognition and methylation of H1 by Dam MTase contribute to formation of abundant hemin/G-quadruplexes, which catalyze oxidation of dopamine into dopachrome and reduce the dopamine amount on the DPAD surface. In comparison with the case in which Dam MTase is absent, an evident deep pink signal originating from dopachrome is observed directly by the naked eye and relied on Dam MTase concentrations. Therefore, truly equipment-free and naked-eye detection of Dam MTase is achieved with a detection limit of 1.46 U/mL. The fabricated DPAD not only achieves Dam MTase-visualized detection but also permits the accurate determination of other analytes by varying recognizable DNA's sequences, thus offering a universal biosensor and depicting significant potential for widespread applications in biomedical field.

Removing benzene from indoor space plays an important role in indoor air purification. A novel filter with vegetal fiber paper (VFP) as matrix hosting silica gel is proposed in this paper for benzene removal. In order to investigate the feasibility and performance of this idea, firstly, three pieces of VFP samples impregnated with different amounts of silica gel are fabricated and their benzene adsorption quantities are tested. The results show that three times is recommended as the optimal number for impregnating. The VFP sample impregnated with silica gel after the third impregnating exhibits commendable coating stability and good benzene adsorption performance. Additionally, at low relative pressure (Pb /Ps ≤ 0.05), the experimental data of benzene adsorption isotherms fit well with the Langmuir model with R2 greater than 0.97. Then, two actual filters made of VFP impregnated with silica gel after the third impregnating were fabricated. It is found that the pressure drop of the actual filter is only 1200 Pa/m when the air velocity is 2 m/s. Besides, the one-pass efficiency of the filter can reach to 19.44%. It is expected that the silica gel coated on the filter can be modified to improve the purification performance of the filter.

Paper-based microfluidic analytical devices (μPADs) have recently attracted attention as a point-of-care test kit because of their low cost and nonrequirement for external forces. To directly detect biomarkers in whole blood, however, they need to be assembled with a filter such as a plasma separation membrane (PSM) because the color of the blood cells interferes with the colorimetric assay. However, this assembly process is rather complicated and cumbersome, and the fluid does not uniformly move to the detection zone when the adhesion between the paper and PSM is not perfect. In this study, we report a simple three-dimensional (3D) printing method for fabricating PSM-integrated 3D-μPADs made of plastics without the need for additional assembly. In detail, PSM was coated with parylene C to prevent its dissolution from organic solvent during 3D printing. Then, the coated PSM was superimposed on the paper. Detection zones and a reservoir were printed on the paper and PSM via liquid photopolymerization, using a digital light processing printer. The limit of detection of the PSM-integrated 3D-μPADs for glucose in whole blood was 0.3 mM, and these devices demonstrated clinically relevant performance on diabetes patient blood samples. Our 3D-μPADs can also simultaneously detect multiple metabolic disease markers including glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides in whole blood. Our results suggest that our printing method is useful for fabricating 3D-μPADs integrated with PSM for the direct detection of biomarkers in whole blood.

Flexible pressure sensors have attracted considerable attention because of their potential applications in healthcare monitoring and human-machine interactions. However, the complicated fabrication process and the cos of sensing materials limit their widespread applications in practice. Herein, a flexible pressure sensor with outstanding performances is presented through an extremely simple and cost-efficient fabrication process. The sensing materials of the sensor are based on low-cost carbon black (CB)@airlaid paper (AP) composites, which are just prepared by drop-casting CB solutions onto APs. Through simply stacking multiple CB@APs with an irregular surface and a fiber-network structure, the obtained pressure sensor demonstrates an ultrahigh sensitivity of 51.23 kPa-1 and an ultralow detection limit of 1 Pa. Additionally, the sensor exhibits fast response time, wide working range, good stability, as well as excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. All the comprehensive and superior performances endow the sensor with abilities to precisely detect weak air flow, wrist pulse, phonation, and wrist bending in real time. In addition, an array electronic skin integrated with multiple CB@AP sensors has been designed to identify spatial pressure distribution and pressure magnitude. Through a biomimetic structure inspired by blooming flowers, a sensor with the open-petal structure has been designed to recognize the wind direction. Therefore, our study, which demonstrates a flexible pressure sensor with low cost, simple preparation, and superior performances, will open up for the exploration of cost-efficient pressure sensors in wearable devices.

Polymerization-based signal amplification (PBA) is a material-based approach to improving the sensitivity of paper-based diagnostic tests. Eosin Y is used as an assay label to photo-initiate free-radical polymerization to produce colored hydrogels in the presence of target analytes captured by bioactive paper. PBA achieves high-contrast and time-independent signals, but its nanomolar detection limit makes it impractical for early diagnosis of many diseases. In this work, we demonstrated efficient localization of large quantities of eosin Y per captured target analyte by incorporating eosin Y-loaded liposomes into PBA. This new "materials approach" allowed 30-fold signal enhancement compared to conventional PBA. To further improve the detection limit of liposome-enhanced PBA, we used a continuous flow-through assay format with 100 μL of analyte solution, achieving sub-nanomolar detection limits with high-contrast signals that were easily discernible to the unaided eye.

Library material, and thus parchment, is frequently subjected to bio-deterioration processes caused by microorganisms. Fungi and bacteria cause alterations in the parchment inducing, in some cases, even the partial detachments of the surface layer and the loss of any text present on it. An important contribution to disinfection of the cultural heritage artefacts is given by the use of ionizing radiation. In this work, a preliminary study on the applicability of X-ray radiation as treatment for bio-deterioration removal is proposed. The results on the microbial growth after different irradiation treatments are shown in order to detect the dose protocol for the bio-degradation removal. Furthermore, the evaluation of the irradiation effects on the parchment microstructure is presented in order to define the applicability of the method on parchment artefacts.

This paper demonstrates a simple-in-struct- ure, cost-effective, and environment-friendly Microfluidic Paper-based Analytical Device for Microbial Biofuel Cell ( $\mu $ PAD-MBFC). It consists of a microchannel with biofuel cell (Escherichia.Coli) and an oxidant (aerated tap water) flowing co-parallelly over Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT)-based Bucky Paper (BP) electrodes using a self-capillary and co-laminar flow mechanism. The electrochemical studies, such as open circuit potential (OCP) and polarization were evaluated using a potentiostat. Various volumetric bacterial studies were also carried out to find out the best suitable optimal bacterial volume. Subsequently, the morphological and detailed element composition study of electrode surface was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. This well-designed portable $\mu $ PAD-MBFC yields a maximum power density of 4 $\mu \text{W}$ /cm2 ( $20~\mu \text{A}$ /cm2) at 0.405 V over $200~\mu \text{l}$ of culture and leveraging to its long-lasting potential to operate miniaturized microelectronics sensors and portable devices.

A paper-based electrochemical immunosensor was developed for the detection of cancer antigen 125 (CA125) by screen-printing technique. The reduced graphene oxide/thionine/gold nanoparticles (rGO/Thi/AuNPs) nanocomposites were compounded and coated onto the working electrode of immunosensor for CA125 antibody (anti-CA125) immobilization and detection signal amplification. The detection principle was based on the fact that the immunocomplex formed by specify binding of CA125 antibody and antigen could reduce the current response of thionine, which was proportional to the corresponding concentration of CA125 antigen. The immunoassay results showed that the linear range of CA125 was from 0.1 U mL-1 to 200 U mL-1 with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.01 U mL-1 at signal to noise of 3. Quality control serum samples measured by our proposed immunosensor showed acceptable agreement with traditional ELISA method with the relative error less than 8.05%. The immunosensor exhibited good electrochemical performance with high reproducibility, reliability, stability and accuracy. The proposed immunosensor could be used for the determination of CA125 and had the potential for point-of-care testing (POCT) of other tumor marker.

The dielectric properties of oil-paper insulation degrade due to moisture ingression and ageing. This degradation significantly impacts the space charge accumulation and charge trapping behaviour in the insulation, which are vital parameters for insulation health under the high-voltage direct current environment. In this work, an improved model based on the isothermal relaxation current (IRC) has been developed to study the charge trapping behaviour of an oil pressboard under the influence of moisture and ageing. The conventional IRC model considers the total relaxation current because of charge de-trapping only. However, in the case of a composite dielectric like oil pressboard, dipolar relaxation also affects the relaxation current. In this work, a methodology has been proposed to investigate charge de-trapping behaviour of oil-pressboard insulation considering the dipole relaxation process from IRC measurements. For this purpose, frequency domain spectroscopy measurements and IRC measurements have been performed on oil-impregnated pressboard specimens carefully prepared in the laboratory having different ageing conditions and moisture contents. Results presented in this work depict that charge trapping parameters, i.e. the trap depth and trapped charge distribution are highly affected both by ageing and moisture. It was observed that ageing leads to the generation of deeper traps, while moisture mainly enhances the density of shallow traps.

Minimally invasive devices to detect molecules in dermal interstitial fluid (ISF) are desirable for point-of-care diagnostic and monitoring applications. In this study, we developed a microneedle (MN) patch that collects ISF for on-patch biomarker analysis by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The micrometer-scale MNs create micropores in the skin surface, through which microliter quantities of ISF are collected onto plasmonic paper on the patch backing. The plasmonic paper was prepared by immobilizing poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) coated gold nanorods (AuNRs) on a thin strip of filter paper using plasmonic calligraphy. Negatively charged PSS was used to bind positively charged rhodamine 6G (R6G), which served as a model compound, and thereby localize R6G on AuNR surface. R6G bound on the AuNR surface was detected and quantified by acquiring SERS spectra from the plasmonic paper MN patch. This approach was used to measure pharmacokinetic profiles of R6G in ISF and serum from rats in vivo. This proof-of-concept study indicates that a plasmonic paper MN patch has the potential to enable on-patch measurement of molecules in ISF for research and future medical applications.

Paper-based optoelectronic noses (OENs) are being developed based on printing of organic and organometallic reagents on hydrophilic substrates that can visualize the odor of volatiles. In this work, we report for the first time the use of nanoparticles for fabrication of novel paper-based OENs, which represent much higher sensitivity and produce simple but discriminant colorimetric signature of volatile metabolomes. This nano-optoelectronic nose (NOEN) system, which is fabricated by dropping of gold and silver nanoparticles (each synthesized by 8 chemical species) on the paper, gives obvious colorimetric signatures for chemicals having individual or combined functional groups. Owning to their ultrasensitivity, these simple devices need very small amounts of analytes. These devices could detect and discriminate 45 volatile organic compounds in 9 chemical families including phenols, alchohols, ketones, aldehydes, amines, acids, esters, arenes, and hydrocarbons. In addition to excellent discrimination ability, this NOEN sensor shows ultrahigh sensitivity such that could determine volatile compounds with detection limits around or lower than 10 ppb. Moreover, it can be combined with multivariate calibration methods for quantitative analysis of a metabolite in a complex mixture.

Due to the combined advantages of cellulose and nanoscale (diameter 20–60 nm), bacterial cellulose possesses a series of attractive features including its natural origin, moderate biosynthesis process, good biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness. Moreover, bacterial cellulose nanofibers can be conveniently processed into three-dimensional (3D) intertwined structures and form stable paper devices after simple drying. These advantages make it suitable as the material for construction of organ-on-a-chip devices using matrix-assisted sacrificial 3D printing. We successfully fabricated various microchannel structures embedded in the bulk bacterial cellulose hydrogels and retained their integrity after the drying process. Interestingly, these paper-based devices containing hollow microchannels could be rehydrated and populated with relevant cells to form vascularized tissue models. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, we seeded human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) into the microchannels to obtain the vasculature and inoculated the MCF-7 cells onto the surrounding matrix of the paper device to build a 3D paper-based vascularized breast tumor model. The results showed that the microchannels were perfusable, and both HUVECs and MCF-7 cells exhibited favorable proliferation behaviors. This study may provide a new strategy for constructing simple and low-cost in vitro tissue models, which may find potential applications in drug screening and personalized medicine.
