An air gap Fabry–Perot fiber interferometric magnetic field sensor based on magnetostrictive effect is proposed. The sensor is composed of single mode fiber (SMF), silica capillary and magnetostrictive material, forming the Fabry–Perot cavity of "single mode fiber-air gap-single mode fiber". With the change of external magnetic field, the magnetic volume of magnetostrictive material changes, the length of gas chamber changes, resulting in the change of optical path difference. Therefore, changes in the magnetic field can be obtained by monitoring the wavelength of the reflection spectrum. Within the magnetic field range of 3.68mT-5.72mT, the magnetic field sensitivity and linearity of the sensor are 0.299 nm/mT and 0.99767, respectively. In addition, temperature changes can also affect the sensor. At 51–56 °C, its temperature sensitivity is 0.163 nm/°C, and its linearity is 0.99831. The temperature cross sensitivity coefficient of the sensor is 0.545mT/℃. This simple, low-cost, and high-performance sensor is a promising candidate for magnetic field monitoring. This paper presents a study of magnetoelectric (ME) properties of the PZT/Terfenol-D composite with a varying number of layers. The composite consists of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive phases that are mechanically coupled. The purpose of this setup is to gain control over the electric polarization of a material via an external magnetic field. Unlike most similar composites, our samples utilize a commercial piezoelectric patch instead of pure PZT. At present, researchers face two main problems regarding magnetoelectric materials: (i) the effect is observed far below room temperature for single-phase materials, and (ii) the ME coupling is too weak to be commercially viable. Our research was carried out via the lock-in technique on two PZT/Terfenol-D samples we synthesized. Relatively strong room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling between piezoelectric and magnetostrictive phases was observed for both samples. Two types of characteristics were investigated: (i) ME voltage versus magnetic AC field frequency, and (ii) ME voltage versus magnetic DC field. We detected multiple, grouped signal peaks ascribed to different resonance modes. The article addressed the heat exchange efficiency of an antifreeze flow, used as the working substance in a refrigeration system and filled with a magnetostrictive intermetallic alloy. A dynamic two-dimensional gradient magnetic field was employed as a propulsion source for the magnetostrictive coolant. The regulation and control of the volume flow rate of the coolant were achieved by inducing the dynamic magnetic field, which influenced the orientation and size of the scale-shaped particles dispersed within the coolant. Replacing conventional pumps with magnetic field-based propulsion systems for the circulation of antifreeze in heat-exchange systems offers a reduction in energy consumption in technological systems. This paper presents a computationally efficient constitutive model for magnetostrictive materials. High computational efficiency is achieved through the use of local linearization (about easy axes) and discrete energy-averaging techniques. The model is applied to iron-gallium alloys (Galfenol) and tested for different magnetic field orientations relative to the easy axes. It is observed that the model accurately predicts both sensing and actuation characteristics while reducing the computation time by a large factor (> 1000 times) when compared to the nonlinear energy minimization models. Furthermore, the average error observed in λ – H and B – H curves is less than 3.5% with the error increasing at magnetic field orientations farther from easy axes, particularly at large magnetic field values. Finally, the model is integrated with a finite element framework to predict the response of a Galfenol rod transducer system, and parametric studies are performed for different current and prestress conditions to optimize the device performance. A novel alternating current (AC) magnetic field sensor that has a stable operating point and is insensitive to ambient temperature fluctuations is presented. The sensor is based on a high attenuation fiber Bragg grating (HAFBG) attached to a magnetostrictive rod. A stable operating point is achieved by regulating a heating laser based on a feedback algorithm that compensates the temperature fluctuations of the surrounding environment. Experimental results show that the sensor responds well to dynamic magnetic fields and is able to ensure a stable operating point in the range of at least 15 °C in an ambient temperature disturbance test. The ease of fabrication and excellent performance suggest that the proposed fiber sensor is suitable for practical AC magnetic field sensing applications, such as health monitoring of transformers and fault diagnosis of induction motors. In this work, a sensitive tool to detect magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) based on a non-linear Giant Magnetoimpedance (GMI) effect is presented. The GMI sensor is designed with four nearly zero magnetostrictive ribbons connected in series and was analysed as a function of a constant external magnetic field and exciting frequency. The influence of the magnetic nanoparticles deposited on the ribbon surface was characterized using the first (fundamental) and second (non-linear) harmonics of the magnetoinductive voltage. The results show a clear enhancement of the sensor response in the high magnetic field region (H=1.5 kA/m) as a consequence of the stray field generated by the magnetic nanoparticles on the GMI ribbons' surface. The highest sensitivity ratios are obtained for the non-linear component in comparison with the fundamental response. The results open a new research strategy in magnetic nanoparticle detection. A multiferroic magnetic field sensor capable of producing an output for threshold magnetic fields has been fabricated and characterized. The sensor consists of a trilayer composite of piezoelectric X-cut lanthanum gallium tantalate and magnetostrictive Metglas placed inside a solenoid and a wide-band amplifier. The composite plays two distinct roles in the device; it forms the feedback loop of an oscillator and sets the frequency of sustained oscillations. The sensor generated an output of 2.5V at the longitudinal acoustic resonance frequency of 87.5 kHz for the trilayer for DC magnetic fields H=0.3 to 50 Oe parallel to the composite plane. The device functions as a threshold magnetic field sensor for this H-interval, and the threshold ON and OFF H-values for an ac voltage output could be controlled electronically or with a proper choice of the ferromagnetic phase in the composite. The performance of vibration power generation using the inverse magnetostrictive effect increases with increasing its device size. In this study, grain-oriented electrical steel that can be largely produced was investigated as a core material, using a U-shaped unimorph device at a laboratory scale. The device using a grain-oriented electrical steel core (16mm long with a 1.4mm² cross-section) with the rolling direction (RD) along the stress direction exhibited the effective open-circuit voltage of 0.89V under an optimum bias magnetic field, when the free-end of the device was vibrated with a maximum amplitude of 2.0mm at a mechanical resonance frequency of 108 Hz. In addition, an average output power of 300µW was obtained by adjusting the load resistance. The above-mentioned properties of the RD unimorph core device were superior to those of the transverse direction (TD) unimorph core device, because the magnetic flux density change in the RD core was approximately 0.65 T, which was larger than that in the TD core. Magnetostrictive behavior is characterized by a complex coupling between magnetic and mechanical quantities. While this behavior can be quite easily exploited for both actuation and sensing or energy conversion purposes, the complex hysteresis interaction between magnetization and magnetic field and mechanical stress and strain is hard to model. Nevertheless, magnetic and magnetostrictive experimental curves are quite self-similar, assuming stress as self-similarity parameter. The quantification of this concept would help modeling. Vibration based power generation technology is utilized effectively in various fields. Author has invented novel vibrational power generation device using magnetostrictive material. The device is based on parallel beam structure consisting of a rod of iron-gallium alloy wound with coil and yoke accompanied with permanent magnet. When bending force is applied on the tip of the device, the magnetization inside the rod varies with induced stress due to the inverse magnetostrictive effect. In vibration, the time variation of the magnetization generates voltage on the wound coil. The magnetostrictive type is advantageous over conventional such using piezoelectric or moving magnet types in high efficiency and high robustness, and low electrical impedance. Here, author has established device configuration, simple, rigid, and high power output endurable for practical applications. In addition, the improved device is lower cost using less volume of Fe-Ga and permanent magnet compared to our conventional, and its assembly by soldering is easy and fast suitable for mass production. Average power of 3 mW/cm³ under resonant vibration of 212 Hz and 1.2G was obtained in miniature prototype using Fe-Ga rod of 2 × 0.5× 7mm³. Magnetostrictive behaviors under rotating magnetic fields are investigated for bcc(001) single-crystal films of Fe100-x-Six(x=0, 6, 10 at.%). The magnetostriction observation directions are along bcc[100] and bcc[110] of the films. The magnetostriction waveform varies greatly depending on the observation direction. For the observation along [100], the magnetostriction waveform of all the films is bathtub-like and the amplitude stays at almost constant even when the magnetic field is increased up to the anisotropy field. On the other hand, the waveform along [110] is triangular and the amplitude increases with increasing magnetic field up to the anisotropy field and then saturates. In addition, the waveform of Fe90Si10 film is distorted triangular when the applied magnetic fields are less than its anisotropy field. These magnetostrictive behaviors under rotating magnetic fields are well explained by employing a proposed modified coherent rotation model where the anisotropy field and the magnetization reversal field are determined by using measured magnetization curves. Delta-E effect sensors are based on magnetoelectric resonators that detune in a magnetic field due to the delta-E effect of the magnetostrictive material. In recent years, such sensors have shown the potential to detect small amplitude and low-frequency magnetic fields. Yet, they all require external magnetic bias fields for optimal operation, which is highly detrimental to their application. Here, we solve this problem by combining the delta-E effect with exchange biased multilayers and operate the resonator in a low-loss torsion mode. It is comprehensively analyzed experimentally and theoretically using various kinds of models. Due to the exchange bias, no external magnetic bias fields are required, but still low detection limits down to 350 pT / Hz at 25 Hz are achieved. The potential of this concept is demonstrated with a new operating scheme that permits simultaneous measurement and localization, which is especially desirable for typical biomedical inverse solution problems. The sensor is localized with a minimum spatial resolution of 1 cm while measuring a low-frequency magnetic test signal that can be well reconstructed. Here, in order to calibrate the magnetostrictive liquid-level meter in situ, a set of in-situ calibration device for magnetostrictive liquid-level meter is designed. The structure and working principle of the device are described, and the experimental test and error analysis are carried out for the parts of the in-situ calibration device. Finally, according to the modern instrument and error theory, the accuracy of the calibration device is assessed, and the field calibration experiment of magnetostrictive liquid level gauge is carried out. The theoretical analysis and field experiment results show that the calibrated device can meet the in-situ calibration requirements of the magnetostrictive liquid-level meter with a range of 0–6 m and a precision of 1 mm. The magnetostrictive inkjet printhead (MagJet), an example of the 1-D magnetostrictive actuator (MA), consists of one MA, a nozzle, a chamber, and a fluid inlet. The mathematical estimation tells that the droplets are not likely to be made due to the inverse of Ohnesorge number less than one. The experimental results, however, show that the MagJet ejects the high viscosity fluid up to 1000 cP at room temperature. The magnetostrictive motor (MagMotor), an example of the 2-D MA, is composed of one Terfenol-D rod, one toroidal coil, one solenoid coil, a stator, a rotor, and housing. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study on high-frequency (>5000 Hz) output characteristics of the giant magnetostrictive transducer (GMT) at varied operating conditions. Based on the Jiles–Atherton model, Maxwell’s equations, Newton’s law, and Fourier’s heat transfer equation, a nonlinear electromagnetic–mechanical–thermal multi-field coupled finite element model for GMT is established. The output displacement amplitude of the magnetostrictive rod and the acceleration of vibrating horn at the GMT device are measured and analyzed at varied exciting amplitude of ac magnetic field and frequencies (from 5600 to 7000 Hz). The frequency dependences of permeability and magnetoelastic coupling coefficient obtained from the experimental results are used in revising the model parameters. These output characteristics analysis results can provide theoretical and experimental guidance in the optimization of structural design and precise controlling for high-frequency GMT system. It is shown theoretically that applying magnetic fields can modulate the strength of ionic bonds on the surface of a ferroelectric film via field-induced strains from a magnetostrictive substrate. The ionic bonds form between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes that are bonded to the ferroelectric surface via the Coulomb interaction. The calculations show that applying a magnetic field can tune the activation energy of bond dissociation up by ∼50% or down to zero. This large modulation results from the high sensitivity of ferroelectric surface polarization to strain variation near ferroelectric phase transitions, which occur in epitaxial BaTiO3 films at experimentally accessible residual strains. Our results suggest an opportunity for tailoring the ionic bond strength on ferroelectric surfaces both statically and dynamically via strain engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This function was suitable to model the magnetic behavior of giant magnetostrictive actuator serving in an electronic controlled injector or other types of on-off valves. Applicable range of the model was determined through computing the maximum magnetic field. Then the deviations of the proposed fitting model and Jiles-Atherton model under different parameters were studied to verify the computing effects of the model. Then the effectiveness of the fitting model was verified by experimental results. In the present study, free vibration of magnetostrictive sandwich composite micro plate with magnetostrictive core and composite face sheets are investigated. The modified couple stress theory is taken into account so as to consider the small scale effects. The surrounding elastic medium is simulated as visco-Pasternak foundation to study the effects of both damping and shear effects. Using energy method, Hamilton's principle and first-order shear deformation theory, the governing equations of motion and related boundary conditions are obtained. Finally, the differential quadrature method is employed to analysis the vibration of magnetostrictive sandwich composite micro plate. In this regard, the dimensionless frequency are plotted to study the effects of small scale parameter, surrounding elastic medium, magnetic field, composite fiber angle, aspect ratio, thickness ratio, and boundary conditions. The results indicate that the magnetic field and composite fiber angle play a key role in the dimensionless frequency of magnetostrictive sandwich composite micro plate. Abstract The influence of partial substitution of Co by Al atoms on the magnetocaloric and magnetostrictive properties of the multicomponent Tb-Dy-Gd-Co compounds with a Laves phase structure was investigated. The samples were obtained by arc melting using of high-purity rare-earth metals. The crystal structure of Tb 0.2 Dy 0.8 - x Gd x Co 2 - y Al y (x = 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5; y = 0 and 0.1) compounds was monitored by powder X-ray diffraction. The magnetostriction and the magnetocaloric effect in external magnetic field up to 12 and 18 kOe, respectively, were studied in wide temperature range. This paper deals with practical issues and solutions related to the use of the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) for electrical current measurement. It presents an overview of a full attempt of design and realization of an almost industrial GMI-based current sensor or clamp. The sensor combines dc and ac measurements with the same flexible sensitive element. This paper addresses several practical problems encountered in a real measurement environment. In this context, main attention was paid to the impact of the influence quantities that largely condition the implementation strategies and solutions of the sensor. For the intended industrial application, these influence quantities first include the operating temperature. Its impact on the intrinsic sensor response was investigated in an almost industrial temperature range. Second, bending stress on the sensitive element is another involved influence parameter in the toroidal and flexible structure of the sensor. The effect of this was also characterized. Finally, the third considered influence parameter is the effect of magnetic disturbances. These include the eccentricity of the conductor of interest and the impact of the surrounding magnetic fields such as the earth’s field or fields produced by other conductors in close proximity to the sensor. Different strategies of implementation and solutions, taking into account the impact of influence parameters, were proposed and compared. The optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) sensing system and signal processing method, which is based on the short-time Fourier transform, enable us to interrogate reflected wavelengths of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and their relative position along the optical fiber with high spatial resolution. An FBG is an optical fiber with an appropriately inscribed periodic refractive index modulation. When a broadband optical signal is launched into the FBG, narrow wavelength bandwidth is reflected. Due to an attached transducer, such as Terfenol-D, the reflected wavelength changes with the applied magnetic field. The proposed magnetic FBG sensor consists of a small rod of magnetostrictive alloy TbDyFe, also known as Terfenol-D, which has large magnetostriction. The FBG is attached to the Terfenol-D rod with UV glue. Consequently, the external magnetic field is applied to the sensor and as a result, the Terfenol-D rod length increases. The reflected wavelength shift is observed and measured by the OFDR sensing system. Therefore, we determine the external magnetic field along the optical fiber from the reflected Bragg wavelength shift. The measurement results show that the proposed magnetic field sensors based on Terfenol-D using OFDR can be successfully used for measurement of the external magnetic field along an optical fiber. The three-dimensional (3D) coupled magneto-elastic dynamic model of a giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA) was built based on Maxwell’s equations, elasticity, and vibration theories. The general analytical expressions for the 3D internal magnetic field distribution of GMA were derived, and the corresponding analytical solutions were obtained. This analytical model is able to predict the internal magnetic field distribution and the output displacement of GMA system with different physical parameters under external excitations. The dynamic behaviors, such as the amplitude vs. frequency responses and the time domain waveforms of the GMA, were also studied. Analytical solutions showed that the internal magnetic field has a prominent end effect along the axial direction of a giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) rod, whereas a minimal skin effect along its radial direction, which are matched very well with the FEM results. The amplitude-frequency relationship exhibited prominent resonance and anti-resonance characteristic, which is a typical hysteresis feature of the GMA system. In order to testify the validity of the model prediction, a GMA testing system was also established. Excellent agreement was found between the experiment measurements and model predictions in the range of our research (frequency is lower than 300 Hz). The dual-resonant enhancement of mechanical and optical response in cavity optomechanical magnetometers enables precision sensing of magnetic fields. In previous working prototypes of such magnetometers, a cavity optomechanical system is functionalized by manually epoxy-bonding a grain of magnetostrictive material. While this approach allows proof-of-principle demonstrations, practical applications require more scalable and reproducible fabrication pathways. In this work, we developed a multiple-step method to scalably fabricate optomechanical magnetometers on a silicon chip, with reproducible performance across different devices. The key step is to develop a process to sputter coat a magnetostrictive film onto high quality toroidal microresonators, without degradation of the optical quality factor. A peak sensitivity of 585 pT/ H z is achieved, which is comparable with previously reported results using epoxy-bonding. Furthermore, we demonstrate that thermally annealing the sputtered film can improve the magnetometer sensitivity by a factor of 6.3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A frequency-tunable current sensor consisting of Terfenol-D/PZT/Terfenol-D magnetoelectric (ME) laminate and Fe73.5Cu1Nb3Si13.5B9 nanocrystalline alloy has been developed. Almost all ME current-sensing devices have higher outputs at resonance conditions, but this advantage is useful only for narrow bandwidth. For the purpose of broadband current sensing, a frequency up-conversion mechanism is introduced by means of nonlinearity of the field-dependence magnetostriction λ(H). Current sensitivity enhancement is realized by modulating the low-frequency dynamic magnetostrictive strain to its resonance conditions. This solution provides the possibility to achieve resonance-enhanced sensitivity at the power-line frequency of 50 Hz, and the capability to immune the noise floor. Experimental results show that the modulated sensitivity is increased from 48.6mV/A to 178.4mV/A at 50Hz, and a small current step change of 3mA can be clearly distinguished by amplitude or phase of the output signals. Three quasi-one-dimensional magnetoelectric (ME) magnetic field sensors, each with a different magnetostrictive wire material, were investigated in terms of sensitivity and noise floor. Magnetostrictive Galfenol, iron-cobalt-vanadium, and iron-nickel wires were examined. Sensitivity profiles, hysteresis effects, and noise floor measurements for both optimally biased and zero-biased conditions are presented. The FeNi wire (FN) exhibits high sensitivity (5.36 mV/Oe) at bias fields below 22 Oe and an optimal bias of 10 Oe, whereas FeGa wire (FG) exhibits higher sensitivity (6.89 mW/Oe) at bias fields >22 Oe. The sensor of FeCoV wire (FC) presents relatively low sensitivity (2.12 mV/Oe), due to low magnetostrictive coefficient. Each ME tube-topology sensor demonstrates relatively high sensitivity at zero bias field, which results from a magnetic shape anisotropy and internal strain of the thin magnetostrictive wire. Abstract The dynamic process of nucleation, propagation, and braking of a single domain wall (DW) has been systematically determined in a Fe-based magnetostrictive microwire under an applied axial magnetic field. While in previous reports the Sixtus-Tonks experiments have provided partial information on the process (i.e., the average velocity), in the present study we report on the instantaneous processes involved in the propagation of the DW, as well as the transient process during the DW depinning. The experimental measurements were carried out using the spontaneous Matteucci effect induced during DW propagation due to the small helical magnetization component created during the fabrication process. We investigated the magnetoelectric properties of a new laminate composite material based on y +140°-cut congruent lithium niobate piezoelectric plates with an antiparallel polarized “head-to-head” bidomain structure and metglas used as a magnetostrictive layer. A series of bidomain lithium niobate crystals were prepared by annealing under conditions of Li2O outdiffusion from LiNbO3 with a resultant growth of an inversion domain. The measured quasi-static magnetoelectric coupling coefficient achieved |αE31| = 1.9 V·(cm Oe)−1. At a bending resonance frequency of 6862 Hz, we found a giant |αE31| value up to 1704 V·(cm Oe)−1. Furthermore, the equivalent magnetic noise spectral density of the investigated composite material was only 92 fT/Hz1/2, a record value for such a low operation frequency. Lead-free multiferroic composites with enhanced magnetoelectric properties and sensitivity have potential for various multifunctional devices. The magnetoelectric behaviour of CoFe 2 O 4 -(Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 ) (Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 )O 3 , (CFO-BCZT) and substituted CFO-BCZT laminate composites prepared by epoxy bonding are investigated in this study. Magnetostrictive CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) substituted with Ti (CTFO) resulted in a very high piezo-magnetic coefficient (q) of ∼290 × 10 −9  Oe −1 . Lead free piezoelectric (Ba 0.85 Ca 0.15 ) (Zr 0.1 Ti 0.9 )O 3 [BCZT] substituted with Ce 4+ (BCZCT) showed improved piezoelectric coefficients of d 33 ∼ 675 pC/N and g 33 ∼13 mV m/N. Two new trilayer multiferroic laminates were developed with a (2-2) composite connectivity by combining the pure and substituted ferroic phases. Magnetostrictive, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and magnetoelectric properties of CFO-BCZT and CTFO-BCZCT laminate composites were measured and compared in here. CTFO-BCZCT composite exhibited a large magnetoelectric response with a high ME coefficient (α ME ) of ∼950 mV/cm.Oe and also showed an improved magnetoelectric sensitivity at lower magnetic fields, making it a potential lead-free material for magnetoelectric sensing applications. The investigation of planar coils of differing topologies, when combined with a magnetostrictive amorphous ribbon to form a stress-sensitive self-inductor, is an active research area for applications as stress or pressure sensors. Four topologies of planar coil (Circular, Mesh, Meander, and Square) have been constructed using copper track on 30 mm wide PCB substrate. The coils are energized to draw 0.4 A and the resulting magnetic field distribution is observed with a newly developed three-dimensional magnetic field scanner. The system is based on a variably angled Micromagnetics® STJ-020 tunneling magneto-resistance sensor with a spatial resolution of 5-10 μm and sensitivity to fields of less than 10 A/m. These experimental results are compared with the fields computed by ANSYS Maxwell® finite element modelling of the same topologies. Measured field shape and strength correspond well with the results of modelling, including direct observation of corner and edge effects. Three-dimensional analysis of the field shape produced by the square coil, isolating the components H(x) and H(z), is compared with the three-dimensional field solutions from modelling. The actuating precision of a micro-positioning system, driven by a magnetostrictive actuator, is adversely limited by its nonlinearities, particularly the output-input hysteresis, which are further affected by the operating load and input frequency. In this paper, the output-input properties of a magnetostrictive actuated system are experimentally characterized considering a wide range of operating frequencies and loads. The measured data revealed that the hysteresis behaviour is strongly affected with a change of operating load, and a modified Prandtl-Ishlinskii model with load-dependent delay is subsequently formulated to describe the nonlinear characteristics of the magnetostrictive actuated system in terms of major and minor loop hysteresis, and output magnitude and phase responses. The proposed model integrates a load-delay function related to the load mass with the Prandtl-Ishlinskii hysteresis model so as to fully describe the coupled nonlinear delay effects of the system output. The validity of the proposed model is demonstrated through comparisons with the experimental data for a range of operating loads and frequencies. This study develops a rate-dependent constitutive model which includes pinning site loss and eddy current loss for magnetostrictive materials. The static pinning site loss is described by an energy-weighted averaging framework; the stress- and field-induced eddy current loss is defined by Maxwell’s equations. Due to the eddy currents, the magnetic field in magnetostrictive materials is inhomogeneous especially when the excitation frequency is beyond the cut-off frequency. The model developed in this study is able to capture the stress- and field-induced magnetic diffusion. Analytical solutions are derived for magnetostrictive rods and minor loop responses. However, numerical solutions can be found for other geometries and large input amplitudes using the same modeling algorithm. The model is used to interpret flux density versus stress measurements of a highly-textured, 〈 1 0 0 〉 -oriented, polycrystalline Fe 81.6 Ga 18.4 rod under constant current biasing. Resonance magnetoelectric (ME) responses are investigated for the ME laminate heterostructure consisting of positive magnetostrictive material FeCuNbSiB, negative magnetostrictive material Ni and piezoelectric material PZT-8. On one hand, both a built-in magnetic field induced by the strong magnetic interactions between positive magnetostrictive and negative magnetostrictive materials and an intrinsic anisotropic field with obvious hysteresis and remnant magnetization in Ni layer result in a large zero-biased ME effect. The corresponding zero-biased ME voltage coefficient reaches 10.12 V/Oe (126.5 V/cm Oe), which is about 3 times larger than that of traditional Ni/PZT-8 (NP) laminate. On the other hand, the additional stress produced by the high magnetic permeability FeCuNbSiB layer enhances the magnetostriction of Ni layer and ME response. The corresponding maximum ME voltage coefficient (dVME/dHac) is 12.09 V/Oe (150.87 V/cm Oe) at bias magnetic field H\mathrm {dc} = 4 Oe. It is further found that even a step change of ac magnetic field less than 10−10 T can be clearly distinguished by the proposed ME composite. The value of ME voltage sensitivity to dc magnetic fields (dVME/dH \mathrm {dc}) reaches ~76.7 mV/Oe at H\mathrm {dc}= 5 Oe and H\mathrm {ac} =0.1 Oe. We present the measurements of the static and dynamic properties of polycrystalline iron–gallium films, ranging from 20 to 80 nm and sputtered from an Fe0.8Ga0.2 target. Using a broadband ferromagnetic resonance setup in a wide frequency range, perpendicular standing spin-wave resonances were observed with the external static magnetic field applied in-plane. The field corresponding to the strongest resonance peak at each frequency is used to determine the effective magnetization, the $g$ -factor, and the Gilbert damping. Furthermore, the dependence of spin-wave mode on field-position is observed for several frequencies. The analysis of broadband dynamic properties allows determination of the exchange stiffness $A = (18 \pm 4)$ pJ/m and Gilbert damping $\alpha = 0.042 \pm 0.005$ for 40 and 80 nm thick films. These values are approximately consistent with values seen in epitaxially grown films, indicating the potential for the industrial fabrication of magnetostrictive FeGa films for microwave applications. This paper presents an engineering modeling methodology for magnetostrictive materials based on a simplified piezo-electric governing equation. For verifying the modeling performance, a proof-of-concept non-contact strain sensor utilizing a prototype magnetostrictive (Fe–Ga alloy, Galfenol) strip on a steel plate is used to evaluate sensor performance prediction. Typically, the performance of Galfenol is measured in a compressional load region because it has a higher response. However, in this paper, we are aiming to develop a sensor for tensile stress measurement. To achieve a compression effect from a tension load in the sensing element, a Galfenol strip is aligned perpendicular to a tension bar so that tension in the bar creates compression in the strip via the Poisson effect. The experimental setup in this paper consists of a polycrystalline Galfenol strip bonded in the horizontal direction of a steel dog-bone shaped tension specimen. Permanent magnets are attached at each end of the Galfenol strip to provide an even magnetic bias field through the strip. The magnetic flux through the Galfenol strip is measured with non-contact Hall sensors during the tensile load test. Nowadays, the ever growing use of electronic equipment in everyday life raises issues regarding the safety of specific population groups, such as patients carrying EMI sensitive implantable devices (e.g. cardiac pacemakers, surgical stents, etc.). In this respect, the need for wearable magnetic monitoring systems, able of detecting the presence of possibly hazardous magnetic fields of various different origins may become obvious. In this work, a wearable magnetic sensing device has been constructed in order to assess its ability to identify the presence of static magnetic fields of magnetic flux density up to 6 Gauss. Magnetostrictive delay lines (MDLs) have been employed as the sensing elements, due to their fibrous form and minimal thickness, which allows integration in textile and clothing products. Two different amorphous magnetostrictive materials, in ribbon and wire form respectively, have been tested in order to reveal the most appropriate solution for the application under consideration. Moreover, different performance aspects, such as uniformity of sensor’s response as well as temperature effects have been examined. The experimental results indicate that the proposed system can effectively operate within the required magnetic flux density range. Giant magnetostrictive materials are gaining interest in the field of smart material, especially the commercially known Terfenol-D, that is an alloy made out of iron, terbium and dysprosium (Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.9). Since these smart materials are subjected to both mechanical loads and magnetic field during their industrial applications, an extensive characterization on the influence of a magnetic field and of defects on their fracture behavior is needed. Very few works can be found in literature about this topic and, thus, the purpose of this work is to partially fill this lack by means of three-point bending tests on single-edge pre-cracked Terfenol-D specimens. Failure loads have been measured at different loading rates and under magnetic fields of various intensities. Since giant magnetostrictive materials are very brittle, the strain energy density (SED) approach has been exploited by means of couplefield finite element analyses. SED has revealed itself as a robust parameters in the assessment of the magnetic field and loading rate effects on fracture resistance, allowing also to propose a relationship between the radius of the control volume and the loading-rate. Magnetostrictive materials that may alter their shape significantly in response to external magnetic fields are used in unidirectional motion and force actuators and linear motors. In this study, we present a linear magnetostrictive motor (LMM) powered through a pulse width modulation (PWM) drive, whose core is a waveform controller of DRV101T type. Mathematical modeling and numerical simulations (in the finite element method) are used in the design phase to optimally size the LMM and to predict its behavior in stationary and dynamic working conditions, for a duty cycle (percentage of time when the driving coil is active) $$k=70$$ % and the frequency $$f=1$$ kHz. The mechanical bias, provided by a spring system, is complemented with a bias coil, which is powered by a PWM stage too. This solution provides for enhanced and flexible control, while reducing the Joule losses to a minimum. LMM actuation is also provided through a second coil. The frequency of the voltage applied to the actuation coil is the same with the frequency of voltage applied to the bias coil. The output characteristic model of a magnetostrictive cantilever-like tactile sensor has been founded based on the inverse-magnetostrictive effect, the flexure mode, and the Jiles-Atherton model. The magnetostrictive sensor has been designed and an output voltage is analyzed under the conditions of bias magnetic field, contact pressure and deflection of cantilever beam. The experiment has been performed to determine the relation among the induced output voltage, bias magnetic field, and pressure. It is found that the peak of the induced output voltage increases with an increasing pressure under the bias magnetic field of 4.8kA/m. The experimental result agrees well with the theoretical one and it means that the model can describe the relation among the induced output voltage, bias magnetic field, and pressure. Typical giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA) cannot meet the requirement of driving a high-speed on-off valve for limitation in bias magnetic field exerted on giant magnetostrictive material. To solve this problem, a novel GMA is designed with zero bias magnetic field. Furthermore, to satisfy the requirement of the displacement direction, a ' T' type transfer rod is joined to convert material's elongating into actuator's shortening. Simultaneously, long responding time of the actuator, especially the rising time of coil current, is also considered in this paper. The transient-state current is modeled based on the equivalent circuit considering parallel resistance of the coil, and from computed result, high opening voltage can be taken to promote responding speed of the actuator, and then an optimized driving voltage wave is presented. We investigate the effect of strain along armchair and zigzag directions on electrical transport in graphene through a magnetic barrier and a linearly polarized electromagnetic wave In the context of Floquet theory, the eigenvalues and related eigenspinors are calculated analytically. The transmission probabilities are expressed as a function of different parameters using the transfer matrix approach and boundary conditions at two interfaces with current densities. We see that as the barrier width and incident energy change, the transmission via the center band oscillates less at zero strain. The transmission across the first sidebands begins at 0 and follows the pattern of a sinusoidal function that grows with increasing barrier width and becomes nearly linear for larger incident energy. When the strain magnitude is activated, the number of oscillations in all transmission channels drops marginally in the armchair direction but increases dramatically in the zigzag direction. The behavior of the total transmission is found to be comparable to that of the central band, with the exception that it exhibits a translation to the up. A high-performance fiber Bragg grating-based (FBG) sensor device has been developed for the detection of small magnetic fields. Based on a smart multilayer jacket around the fibre over the physical length of the FBG, magnetic fields generated by rotating machine parts, power generators or power cable can be easily detected, analysed and evaluated. Consequently, this innovative, on-line and non-contact inspection method results in an increase in quality and reliability of high-performing machine parts, devices and cables. The basic physical principle is based on a magnetostrictive multilayer system that strains the high-resolution FBG element in presence of magnetic fields. Subsequently, a fixed relationship between induced magnetic field and wavelength change of the FBG element describes the characteristic sensitivity curve. Giant magnetostrictive actuator has been widely used in precise driving occasions for its excellent performance. However, in driving a switching valve, especially the ball-valve in an electronic controlled injector, the actuator can’t exhibit its good performance for limits in output displacement and responding speed. A novel giant magnetostrictive actuator, which can reach its maximum displacement for being exerted with no bias magnetic field, is designed in this paper. Simultaneously, elongating of the giant magetostrictive material is converted to shortening of the actuator's axial dimension with the help of an output rod in “T” type. Furthermore, to save responding time, the driving voltage with high opening voltage while low holding voltage is designed. Responding time and output displacement are studied experimentally with the help of a measuring system. From measured results, designed driving voltage can improve the responding speed of actuator displacement quite effectively. Large magnetostriction with low saturation magnetic field was recently reported in Fe-Pd ferromagnetic strain glass alloys. Such behaviour is highly desirable for miniaturized sensor and actuator applications. The origin of high performance magnetostriction in Fe-Pd ferromagnetic strain glass is suggested to stem from its martensitic nanodomains. However, the atomic formation mechanism underlying these nanodomains and their associated local crystal symmetry breaking have not been well revealed. Moreover, accumulating experimental results indicate that the nano-structure can lead to a small saturation field but cannot guarantee large magnetostriction. Consequently, the necessary conditions for low field triggered large magnetostriction of Fe-Pd ferromagnetic strain glass alloys still remain unclear. In this paper, the chemistry, structure and transformation properties of the Fe 98- x Cu 2 Pd x (x = 28.5 ∼ 31) system are systematically explored to discover the origin of the high performance magnetostriction of ferromagnetic strain glass alloys. We found that the structure of ferromagnetic strain glass consists of local chemical order. This leads to tetragonal martensitic nanodomains with the local crystal symmetry breaking. The local chemical order also induces strong local phonon softening and a low modulus during the strain glass transition. Further investigation shows that the combination of martensitic nanodomains and low modulus are the necessary conditions to achieve both large magnetostriction and a low saturation field, because they can result in small energy barriers for the rotation of nanodomains. In present work we have investigated magnetostrictive ultrasound generation by spiral magnets in the vicinity of magnetic field induced phase transition from spiral to collinear state. We found that such magnets may generate transverse sound waves with the wavelength equal to the spiral period. We have examined two types of spiral magnetic structures: with inhomogeneous exchange and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions. Frequency of the waves from exchange-caused spiral magnetic structure may reach some THz, while in case of Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction-caused spiral it may reach some GHz. These waves will be emitted like a sound pulses. Amplitude of the waves is strictly depends on the phase transition speed. Some aspects of microwaves to hypersound transformation by spiral magnets in the vicinity of phase transition have been investigated as well. The concept of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) fabricated on an active substrate made of a highly magnetostrictive ferromagnetic material is described theoretically. It is shown that, under certain conditions, such hybrid device exhibits strongly enhanced sensitivity of the tunnel current to the external magnetic field. This feature results from the field-induced substrate deformations, which create lattice strains in the MTJ due to the interfacial mechanical interaction. If the free electrode of MTJ is made of a cubic ferromagnet like Co40Fe60 having strong magnetoelastic coupling between the magnetization and strains, the field-induced magnetization reorientation here may be enhanced by the strain effect drastically. This reorientation should lead to a change in the junction's electrical conductance because the magnetization of the reference electrode may be pinned by adjacent antiferromagnetic layer to keep its initial direction. Taking into account additional strain effects on the height and width of the tunnel barrier and the effective mass of tunneling electrons, we performed numerical calculations of the conductance magnetosensitivity for the CoFe/MgO/CoFeB junctions mechanically coupled to the FeGaB film grown on Si and found that such hybrid device is promising as an ultrasensitive room-temperature magnetic-field sensor. Due to the existence of multicoupled nonlinear factors in the giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA), building precise mathematical model is highly important to study GMA’s characteristics and control strategies. Minor hysteresis loops near the bias magnetic field would be often applied because of its relatively good linearity. Load, friction, and disc spring stiffness seriously affect the output characteristics of the GMA in high frequency. Therefore, the current-displacement dynamic minor loops mathematical model coupling of electric-magnetic-machine is established according to Jiles-Atherton (J-A) dynamic model of hysteresis material, GMA structural dynamic equation, Ampere loop circuit law, and nonlinear piezomagnetic equation and demonstrates its correctness and effectiveness in the experiments. Many novel applications using giant magnetostrictive actuators (GMA) require their actuators output bidirectional strokes to be large enough to drive the load. In these cases, the sophisticated method to form such a sufficient bias field with minimum power and bulk consumption should be considered in the principal stage of GMA design. This paper concerns the methodology of bias field design for a specific GMA with stack PMs and GMMs (SGMA): both loop and field models for its bias field are established; the optimization method for given SGMA structure is outlined; a prototype is fabricated to verify the theory. Simulation and test results indicate that the bias field could be exerted more easily using SGMA structure; the modeling and optimization methodology for SGMA is valid in practical design. In this work, we propose a novel wireless actuator which is composed of magnetostrictive material/copper bi-layer film. The actuator can be controlled to move like a snake bi-directionally along a pipe by tuning the frequency of external magnetic field near its first order resonant frequency. The governing equation for the actuator is established and the vibration mode shape function is derived. Theoretical analysis shows that motion of the actuator is achieved by asymmetric vibration mode shape, specific vibration bending deformation, and effective net total impacting force. The simulation and experimental results well confirm the theoretical analysis. This work provides contribution to the development of wireless micro robots and autonomous magnetostrictive sensors. In light of the contradiction between stroke and accuracy of current actuators, a high precision, large displacement actuator was designed. Rare earth giant magnetostrictive material was used as the driving source and the displacement differential amplification was based on a flexure hinge. A magnetic circuit and driving magnetic field was designed with the characteristics of magnetostrictive drive. The axial pre-pressure of the magnetostrictive rod was supported by a cylindrical helical spring and a displacement amplification mechanism. A new type of differential amplification device was projected by the flexible hinge. The convex desktop splint fixed displacement amplification mechanism was adopted to enlarge the magnetostrictive's small displacement. After the actuator prototype was manufactured and the test platform was established, the output characteristics and amplification mechanism performance were analyzed.
