Background: and Purpose: Green nanotechnology is an interesting method for the synthesis of functional nanoparticles. Because of their wide application, they have set up great attention in recent years. Objective: The present research examines the green synthesis of Ag and zero-valent iron nanoparticles (AgNPs, ZVINPs) by Feijoa sellowiana fruit extract. In this synthesis, no stabilizers or surfactants were applied. Methods: Eco-friendly synthesis of Iron and biogenic synthesis of Ag nanoparticles were accomplished by controlling critical parameters such as concentration, incubation period and temperature. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction analysis (XRD), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and UV-Vis were applied to characterize NPs. The cytotoxicity of NPs was investigated in two cell lines, MCF-7 (breast cancer) and AGS (human gastric carcinoma). A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was also performed for characterization of phenolic acids in the extract. Results: Both NPs displayed powerful anticancer activities against two tumor cell lines with little effect on BEAS-2B normal cells. Synthesized AgNPs and ZVINPs inhibited the growth of all selected bacteria. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Acinetobacter baumannii and Escherichia coli have been studied in two stages. We initially examined the ATCCs followed by clinical strain isolation. Based on the results from resistant strains, we showed that nanoparticles were superior to conventional antibiotics. DPPH (diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay and iron chelating activity were used for the determination of antioxidant properties. Results showed a high antioxidant activity of scavenging free radicals for ZVINPs and powerful iron-chelating activity for AgNPs. Based on the HPLC data, catechin was the major phenolic compound in the extract. Conclusion: Our synthesized nanoparticles displayed potent cytotoxic, antibacterial and antioxidant activities.

Background Feijoa [Acca sellowiana (Berg) Burret] is a Brazilian native fruit with few commercial-level plantations and high agroindustrial potential. A genotype evaluation experiment was conducted from 1996 onward, aiming to obtain fruits based on the agronomical parameters; however, the selection based on chemical composition had not been evaluated with respect to developing a new cultivar. Accordingly, the present study aimed to discriminate seven accessions of feijoa in terms of nutritional composition, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity using multivariate analysis (principal component analysis and multivariate contrast), targeting the potential production of a new cultivar with better nutritional value and high antioxidant capacity. Results Feijoa husk presented high content of ashes, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity compared to feijoa pulp. However, only feijoa pulp was selected to multivariate analysis because it is the fruit edible part. Data variability was explained in 78% and the feijoa pulp accessions were discriminated into four groups related to their characteristics. The accession 5 discrimination can be explained by the high content of ashes, carbohydrates, soluble solids, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. Accession 6 was also discriminated by the high content of total acidity, pH and proteins, as well as a low content of soluble solids. Conclusion Feijoa accessions may be indicated for increasing plant selection via hybridization with the other accessions, aiming to produce new cultivars with better nutritional composition and antioxidant capacity. For example, accession 5 is the most suited fruit for human consumption and is a potential plant with respect to becoming a new cultivar. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

This study aimed to explore the potential anticancer activity of phenolic-rich feijoa extracts from the flesh, peel, and whole fruit on the human prostate cancer cell line (LNCaP). Results showed that feijoa extracts had cancer-specific anti-proliferative activity on the LNCaP cell line. The anticancer activity of feijoa extracts was shown through activation of the caspase-dependent apoptosis pathway based on the increase of sub-G1 phase in the cell cycle, the decrease of mitochondrial membrane potential, as well as the elevated caspase 3, 8, and 9 activity in the treated LNCaP cells. The anti-cancer activity of feijoa extracts could be attributed to the high total phenolic contents (0.14-0.37 mg GAE/mg dw) and, in particular, the high ellagic acid content (2.662-9.119 μg/mg dw). The successful activation of the caspase-dependent apoptosis pathway indicates that phenolic-rich feijoa extracts have a good potential to be utilized as a functional ingredient in foods and nutraceuticals.

Polysaccharides from feijoa fruit were extracted and analyzed; the composition of these polysaccharides conforms to those typically found in the primary cell walls of eudicotyledons. The two major polysaccharide extracts consisted of mainly pectic polysaccharides and hemicellulosic polysaccharides [xyloglucan (77%) and arabinoxylan (16%)]. A collection of commensal Bacteroides species was screened for growth in culture using these polysaccharide preparations and placed into five categories based on their preference for each substrate. Most of the species tested could utilize the pectic polysaccharides, but growth on the hemicellulose was more limited. Constituent sugar and glycosyl linkage analysis showed that species that grew on the hemicellulose fraction showed differences in their preference for the two polysaccharides in this preparation. Our data demonstrate that the members of the genus Bacteroides show differential hydrolysis of pectic polysaccharides, xyloglucan, and arabinoxylan, which might influence the structure and metabolic activities of the microbiota in the human gut.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the protective potential of Feijoa fruit extract on cadmium chloride (CdCl2 )-induced testicular injury and pituitary-gonadal axis. Adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: (a) control (normal saline, orally), (b) cadmium chloride (0.1 mg/kg, single dose, intraperitoneally), (c) Feijoa fruit extract (400 mg/kg, orally for 30 consecutive days) and (d) CdCl2 + Feijoa fruit extract. One day after receiving the last medicine, the LH, FSH, prolactin and testosterone concentration were assayed. Also, sperm parameters and tissue structure of the testis were evaluated. Administration of Feijoa fruit extract after CdCl2 injection in rats ameliorated sperm parameters such as sperm count, morphology, motility and sperm viability, increased levels of LH, FSH, prolactin and testosterone and improved testicular histology. According to the results of this study, it was shown that Feijoa can reduce the destructive side effects of CdCl2 on testicular tissue and sex hormones of the pituitary-gonadal pathway.

Feijoa is a subtropical bush of the Myrtaceae family. It has unique fruit with organoleptic properties that make it an exotic fruit. Head space solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) with a 65 µm divinylbenzene/polydimethylsiloxane (DVB/PDMS) fiber and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrophotometry (GC–MS) was used to study the volatile fraction of feijoa fruit cultured in Caldas, Colombia. The profile analyzed included 134 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). 127 VOCs were classified based on the functional group using the spectral and structural networks correlation analysis. Methyl, ethyl and (Z)-3-hexenyl benzoate with 50% of the volatile composition, were the main compounds. Biosynthesis of the volatilome of feijoa fruit was associated with five main metabolic pathways. This study represents the first analysis of feijoa fruit commercialized in the region. This is an innovator view in elucidation of metabolic pathways that represent the biochemistry of the aroma of this fruit.

Acca sellowiana (feijoa) and Eugenia involucrata (cherry) are fruits species of Brazilian biodiversity (Myrtaceae family). In this study, a sampling process was used with three different harvesting sites. The composition of phenolic compounds of these fruits was determined by HPLC–DAD–MS/MS. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of hydroethanolic extracts against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl ( OH), peroxyl ( ROO–) and ABTS radicals was evaluated. Thirty and twenty-seven phenolic compounds were identified in feijoa and cherry, respectively. The major phenolic compounds found were pedunculagin isomer (5040.87, 3443.66 and 1324.95 μg·g−1) in feijoa and procyanidin (1406.54, 1888.00 and 1380.64 μg·g−1) in cherry. Hydroethanolic extract of these fruits was a potent scavenger of free radicals and excellent source of phenolic compounds. In hydroethanolic extracts of feijoa, the phenolic content increased by around 50%, while in the cherry the content was similar to that found in the fruit. For ORAC method, sample 2 of feijoa and cherry showed values of 383 and 126 µM·TE·g−1, respectively, featuring the highest antioxidant capacity. This study is the first to report the identification of castalagin, catechin and epicatechin in feijoa, and rutin in cherry. Besides, the health benefits, these fruits can contribute to biodiversity conservation.

The odour-active compounds of feijoa (Acca sellowiana), were isolated by Solvent-Assisted Flavour Evaporation (SAFE). By application of GC-O and the aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA), nineteen odorants were detected. Volatile compounds with highest flavour dilution (FD) factor were quantified by internal standard and relative response factor. On the basis of the quantitative data and odour thresholds in water, odour activity values (OAV) were calculated. High OAVs were determined for ethyl butanoate, Z-3-hexenal, linalool and methyl benzoate responsible for the fruity, green, flowery and medicinal notes. A recombination assay and omission tests, showed the relevance of Z-3-hexenal, linalool and methyl benzoate as odour active compounds in feijoa aroma. Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was used in order to verified linalool enantiomeric distribution in two feijoa varieties. R-linalool was the major configuration in both varieties. Quimba variety showed an enantiomeric ratio 75:25 while for Mammoth variety, linalool enantiomeric ratio was 95:5 (R:S).

Past and contemporary human actions are causing numerous changes in patterns and processes at various ecosystem scales and trophic levels, including unintended downstream changes, such as species interactions. In its native range Acca sellowiana (Feijoa) combines some characteristics of human interactions: incipient domestication, restricted to subtropical Atlantic Forest highlands, associated with the threatened conifer Araucaria angustifolia (Araucaria), within a domesticated landscape with anthropogenic forest patches, and provides fruit at a time of resource shortage (Araucaria seeds-pinhao). We quantify the trophic relationships between Feijoa and vertebrates, and evaluate the influences on interactions caused by environmental variations, Feijoa domestication evidences, spatial distance and fruit availability. In four sites within protected areas, we selected 28 focal individuals of Feijoa (seven/site) and collected three temporal replicas between 2015 and 2016, when we measured productivity and frugivory via 45-second videos taken with camera traps. Using ecological network, rarefaction curves and variation partitioning analyses, we evaluate the frugivory network topology, the spatiotemporal structure of communities in relation to fruit availability and the influence of predictive variables on frugivory. We found a large spatiotemporal variation in productivity of Feijoa and that 20 species consumed Feijoa fruits, with a species degree of 2.8 (±5.7) and average Feijoa degree of 14.4 (±10.1), in a modular network with intermediary connectance. Rarefaction curves showed that richness and the independent records are congruent with the fruit amount. Variation partitioning showed that, for the focal individuals, canopy area, green coverage, patch size and distance to water influenced frugivory, and the Feijoa domestication influenced significantly the mammalian frugivory. Feijoa is an important resource that provides food during the time of year when Pinhao is absent, and attracts frugivores, maintain the residual diversity of vertebrates contributing to the structure of communities in highlands. Our insights allowed us to evaluate the magnitude of the interactions between vertebrates and an incipient domesticated tree, in a cultural landscape and highly threatened environment, under a basal foodweb approach with implications for bottom-up and top-down forces. The results contribute to understanding animal-plant relationships, including concepts that can be replicated for other sessile prey and mobile predators in any region or habitat under different gradients of management. Thus, this work shows how human actions can change not only patterns of distribution and abundance but also the diversity and direction of interspecific interactions among species.

Feijoa sellowiana Berg var. coolidge fruit juice was studied in vivo for the anti-inflammatory activity by carrageenin-induced paw edema test and in vitro for the effects on superoxide anion release from neutrophils in human whole blood. The fruit juice was analyzed by the high-performance liquid chromatography method, and quercetin, ellagic acid, catechin, rutin, eriodictyol, gallic acid, pyrocatechol, syringic acid, and eriocitrin were identified. The results showed a significant anti-inflammatory activity of F. sellowiana fruit juice, sustained also by an effective antioxidant activity observed in preliminary studies on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test. In particular, the anti-inflammatory activity edema inhibition is significant since the first hour (44.11%) and persists until the fifth hour (44.12%) of the treatment. The effect on superoxide anion release was studied in human whole blood, in the presence of activators affecting neutrophils by different mechanisms. The juice showed an inhibiting response on neutrophils basal activity in all experimental conditions. In stimulated neutrophils, the higher inhibition of superoxide anion generation was observed at concentration of 10(-4) and 10(-2) mg/mL in whole blood stimulate with phorbol-myristate-13-acetate (PMA; 20% and 40%) and with N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP; 15% and 48%). The significant reduction of edema and the inhibition of O2(-) production, occurring mainly through interaction with protein-kinase C pathway, confirm the anti-inflammatory effect of F. sellowiana fruit juice.

Feijoa sellowiana fruit has been shown to possess various biological activities, such as anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties, in a variety of cellular models, but its activity on human intestinal epithelial cells has never been tested. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the acetonic extract of F. sellowiana fruits on the viability, membrane peroxidation, disaccharidases activities and proliferation of in vitro models of human intestinal epithelial cells. To obtain this goal, Caco-2 and HT-29 cells were exposed to the acetonic extract for 24 h. Cell proliferation, viability, lactase and sucrase-isomaltase activity and H2 O2 -induced membrane lipid peroxidation were tested. We found that, compared to control conditions, the acetonic extract significantly increased lactase and sucrase-isomaltase activity in Caco-2, but not HT-29, cells, decreased proliferation, had no effects on viability and restored lipid peroxidation in both cell models. This study suggests that the acetonic extract improves lactase and sucrase-isomaltase activity, inhibits cell proliferation, have no cytotoxic effects and prevent lipid peroxidation of intestinal epithelial cells. These effects may be exploited in case of disaccharidases deficit and also as an adjuvant treatment of diseases related to oxidative stress. Copyright © 2016 John WileySons, Ltd.

Feijoa sellowiana Berg. fruit, widely used for human consumption, is well appreciated for its good nutritional characteristics and for its pleasant flavor and aroma. In a prior study we showed that the acetonic extract of F. sellowiana fruit exerts a potent antibacterial activity against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. To confirm and deepen the study on antimicrobial activities of the fruit, in this article we analyze the same extract for its effectiveness against different kind of bacteria both as American Type Culture Collection standard strains and clinically isolates, the Gram-negative Helicobacter pylori, and three fungal strains (one human pathogen and two phytopathogens). Our aim was also to isolate and define the active component(s) involved in the antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-H. pylori activity of the extract through activity-guided fractionation procedures. This allowed us to identify flavone as the active compound of F. sellowiana fruit. Flavone showed a high antibacterial activity against the nine standard bacterial strains tested and the matched clinically isolated bacterial strains and was significantly more active against H. pylori than metronidazole. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, and Proteus vulgaris from both standard and clinical sources showed a very high sensitivity to flavone (minimal inhibitory concentration [MIC] = 1.95 microg/mL for standard strains and 3.9 microg/mL for clinical isolates of the three bacteria), showing also good minimal bactericidal concentration values. Among fungi tested, Rhyzoctonia solani was the most sensitive strain to the action of flavone (MIC = 62.5 microg/mL).

Many pharmacological activities have been reported for Feijoa sellowiana. The aim of present study was to investigate antidepressant activities of its leaf and fruit extracts.Antidepressant activities of methanolic extracts were evaluated by modified forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension tests (TST) in male Swiss albino mice.Extracts showed signicant antidepressant activity in both models. They shortened remarkably the immobility period in both FST and TST and exhibited a dose dependent activity (p0.001). Leaf extract showed better activity than fruit extract. At 800 mg kg-1, it showed far better activity than imipramine in FST (p0.001). Both extracts showed significantly better activity than imipramine in increasing climbing time (p0.001). They showed significant activity in increasing in swimming time as compared to the control group (p0.001).Our studies indicate that Feijoa showed significant antidepressant activity. It produced dose dependent effect on both models. It seems this effect is mainly mediated by inhibition of reuptake of catecholamines. These results introduced these plants as easily accessible source of natural antidepressant.

High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) is used for microbial inactivation in foods. Addition of carbon dioxide (CO2) to HHP can improve microbial and enzyme inactivation. This study investigated microbial effects of combined HHP and CO2 on Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and evaluated sensory attributes of treated feijoa fruit puree (pH 3.2). Microorganisms in their growth media and feijoa puree were treated with HHP alone (HHP), or saturated with CO2 at 1 atm (HHPcarb), or 0.4%w/w of CO2 was injected into the package (HHPcarb+CO2). Microbial samples were processed at 200 to 400 MPa, 25 °C, 2 to 6 min. Feijoa samples were processed at 600 MPa, 20 °C, 5 min, then served with and without added sucrose (10%w/w). Treated samples were analyzed for microbial viability and sensory evaluation. Addition of CO2 enhanced microbial inactivation of HHP from 1.7-log to 4.3-log reduction in E. coli at 400 MPa, 4 min, and reduction of6.5 logs in B. subtilis (vegetative cells) starting at 200 MPa, 2 min. For yeast, HHPcarb+CO2 increased the inactivation of HHP from 4.7-log to 6.2-log reduction at 250 MPa, 4 min. The synergistic effect of CO2 with HHP increased with increasing time and pressure. HHPcarb+CO2 treatment did not alter the appearance and color, while affecting the texture and flavor of unsweetened feijoa samples. There were no differences in sensory attributes and preferences between HHPcarb+CO2 and fresh sweetened products. Addition of CO2 in HHP treatment can reduce process pressure and time, and better preserve product quality.A higher microbial inactivation of Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae by combining dense phase carbon dioxide and high hydrostatic pressure was observed. For sweetened products there were no significant differences in sensory attributes and preferences between samples treated by the combined method and the fresh samples. In conclusion, addition of CO2 in HHP treatment of juices could reduce process severity and improve product quality.

The flavonoids are a heterogeneous group of ubiquitous plant polyphenols that abound in the human diet and are endowed with several biological activities, including immunomodulating and antioxidant activities. The bioactivity of flavonoids is tightly correlated with their chemical structure and action mechanisms, mostly inhibitory, on enzymatic systems involved in cellular activation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of acetonic extracts from Lunularia cruciata gametophytes and Feijoa sellowiana fruits on human phagocyte functions. A purified native flavonoid, a catechin, and two of its derivatives were also tested. The extract, and its flavonoid activity, was evaluated by analyzing luminol-dependent chemiluminescence emitted by human circulating phagocytes, at rest or activated by phorbol miristate acetate (PMA). The results demonstrate that both the raw extracts and flavonoids significantly inhibit CL emission by leukocytes, especially when these cells are activated by PMA. The antioxidant activity of flavonoids can be increased by changing the chemical structure of the native molecule.

The functional properties of aqueous extracts of four fruits commonly consumed in New Zealand, namely blueberry, strawberry, green kiwifruit and feijoa, towards the growth of probiotic and pathogenic bacteria were investigated in this study. A concentration range of 0.1-30.0 g/l was evaluated in a high-throughput assay to determine their effects. In general, the four fruit extracts exerted growth-stimulating effects on the probiotic bacteria, except with Bifidobacterium longum, whereas they were found to inhibit all pathogens tested. Feijoa extract inhibited Listeria monocytogenes and Bacillus cereus even at the lowest concentrations tested. Selected combinations of extracts (blueberry/feijoa and strawberry/kiwifruit) exerted effects that were less than additive compared to the individual extracts. These results are relevant for potential application of fruit extracts not only as functional ingredients in food but also for controlling growth of pathogens and for propagation of probiotic bacteria during food production and storage.

The fruits of Feijoa sellowiana Berg. (Myrtaceae) have been used to treat goiter in traditional Turkish medicine.To evaluate the in vivo antioxidant activities of different polarities of the fruit extracts in blood and tissue (liver, kidney, brain, and heart) antioxidant defense systems in standard pellet diet and in high fat diet consumed, male rats were assessed.The extracts (methanol, n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous) were administered orally to male rats at 50 mg/kg doses daily for 4 weeks. The blood and tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, plasma nitrate (NO(x)) level, total triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine, cholesterol, triglyceride, protein, and glucose levels were determined, and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities; plasma antioxidant activity (AOA) were experimentally studied.Blood MDA level (7.81 ± 0.4) was significantly decreased; GSH level (29.65 ± 1.21) and AOA (1.52 ± 0.08) were increased in ethyl acetate extract as compared with control and the other extracts. In addition, all the extracts decreased MDA levels and increased GSH levels (except brain tissue homogenate) in the tissue homogenates. Erythrocyte SOD and CAT activity levels were unchanged in F. sellowiana extracts. However, the extracts had no effect on plasma NO(x). In the histopathological examinations, any changes or damage in the vital organs were seen in animals.The experimental data demonstrated that F. sellowiana extracts displayed remarkable antioxidant activity and decreased lipid peroxidation in rats; furthermore, no histopathological changes or damage have been observed in the vital organs of rats.
