Seafood plays a major role in the human diet. During transportation, without proper storage and supply chain, its quality deteriorates easily. The post-harvesting processes such as the storage of food play a crucial role in human health. So it is highly imperative to have a technique for identifying food spoilage earlier to ensure the food safety and security of the consumers. Herein we have developed a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent 'Turn-on' probe 2-amino-5-nitrobenzo [d] thiazol-2-yl) imino)methylphenol ANT based on aggregation induced emission (AIE). ANT molecule possesses both restricted intramolecular rotation (RIR) and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) properties leading to fluorescent enhancement rather than aggregation caused quenching (ACQ). The probe shows high selectivity and sensitivity towards the NH 3 vapor. This probe with the AIE property is employed for the real-time detection of NH 3 in both aqueous and gaseous phases. ANT molecule is deposited on the paper shred by a physical method is utilized to monitor NH 3 vapor from red snapper fish as a real-time sample during its degradation processes. After two days there is a ratiometric color change in the paper shred from yellow to orange for the fish stored at room temperature indicating its rotten and unpalatability nature. Paper shred is reused by immersing it into the tetrahydrofuran (THF), in which it retains its initial color due to deprotonation of NH 3 , keto to enol tautomerism discloses the reusability of the fluorescent probe. Synthetic cannabinoids are one of the many substances of abuse widely spreading in modern society. Medical practitioners and law enforcement alike highly seek portable, efficient, and reliable tools for on-site detection and diagnostics. Here, we propose a colorimetric lateral flow assay (LFA) combined with dye-loaded polymersome to detect the synthetic cannabinoid JWH-073 efficiently. Rhodamine B-loaded polymersome was conjugated to antibodies and fully characterized. Two LFA were proposed (sandwich and competitive), showing a high level of sensitivity with a limit of detection (LOD) reaching 0.53 and 0.31 ng/mL, respectively. The competitive assay was further analyzed by fluorescence, where the LOD reached 0.16 ng/mL. The application of the LFA over spiked synthetic saliva or real human saliva demonstrated an overall response of 94% for the sandwich assay and 97% for the competitive LFA. The selectivity of the system was assessed in the presence of various interferents. The analytical performance of the LFA system showed a coefficient of variation below 6%. The current LFA system appears as a plausible system for non-invasive detection of substance abuse and shows promise for synthetic cannabinoid on-site sensing., (© 2021. The Ti 3 C 2 MXene quantum dots (Ti 3 C 2 MQDs) derived from Ti 3 C 2 MXene have received much attention because of their remarkable advantages in biosensing. Nevertheless, the functionalization of Ti 3 C 2 MQDs to improve their properties is just in its infant stage. Herein, we firstly synthesized nitrogen and boron co-doped Ti 3 C 2 MQDs (N, B-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs) with good water solubility, strong stability, and high optical characteristics. The N, B-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent blue photoluminescence with optimal excitation/emission peaks at 335/439 nm. Nowadays, the development of fast and real-time detection of tetracycline (TC) in animal derived food is very essential. In this work, a novel point-of-care testing (POCT) platform was established based on ratiometric fluorescence method using N, B-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs coupled with Eu 3+ . Upon addition of TC in the Eu 3+ /N, B-MQDs system, blue fluorescence emission of N, B-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs was quenched and red fluorescence emission of Eu 3+ was enhanced gradually, which was ascribed to the synergistic inner filter effect and antenna effect. Moreover, we prepared test papers with N, B-Ti 3 C 2 MQDs and Eu 3+ for TC detection based on the change of fluorescence color, which could be recognized by color recognizer app installed in the smartphone. Therefore, great promise for POCT of TC is given with the merits of simplicity and visible detection possibility. The proposed method demonstrated a low detection limit of 20 nM. N, Cl-doped carbon dots (N, Cl-CDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method from rhodamine B (RhB) and ethylenediamine (EDA). The resulting N, Cl-CDs exhibited fascinating solvent dependence and strict excitation independence. As the polarity of the solvent increased (from tetrahydrofuran (THF) to water), the emission spectrum of N, Cl-CDs was redshifted and the fluorescence efficiency decreased, which were attributed to hydrogen bond-induced aggregation. Taking advantage of these attributes, the N, Cl-CDs were used as suitable probes for fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode detection of water in THF. The linear relationship was 0.5-100% water with the detection limit down to 0.093%. Moreover, the sensing platform was converted into a paper-based sensor for handy, real-time, and visible humidity sensing. N, Cl-CDs/PVA films were fabricated and realized continuously tunable solid-state fluorescence, further expanding their practical application., (© 2021. The progress of bio-based fluorescent smart materials and their multifunctional applications have attained increasing interest in the recent decades. Cellulose is among the cheapest and widespread raw material on earth which can be modified into diverse useful materials. This review summarizes the chemical modification of cellulose into smart fluorescent materials. This further highlights on the fabrication of the prepared fluorescent materials into films, fibers, paper strips, carbon dots, hydrogels and solutions which are applied for the sensing of toxic metals and anions, pH, bioimaging, common organic solvents, aliphatic and aromatic amines, nitroaromatics, fluorescent printing, coating, and anti-counterfeiting applications. Finally, the discussion about the upcoming investigations, challenges, and options open for the cellulose-based luminescence sensors are communicated. Molecularly imprinted polymers are efficient and selective adsorbents which act as artificial receptors for desired compounds with the ability to recognize the size, shape, and functional groups of the compounds simultaneously. A molecularly imprinted polymer is prepared by the polymerization of functional monomers around a template (analyte) molecule. Afterward, the removal of the template from the polymer matrix leaves a selective cavity behind. The fabrication and development of molecularly imprinted polymers grew rapidly, due to their low cost, simple preparation, selectivity, sensitivity, and stable physicochemical properties. Traditionally, molecularly imprinted polymers can be synthesized using two main methods, namely bulk and surface imprinting. For more efficient use of the latter method, researchers have developed molecularly imprinted polymers grafted on the solid-phase matrix (substrate). This grafting technique would be particularly useful for surface imprinting of macromolecules, such as proteins. Cellulose fibers of papers with unique properties such as being abundant, retaining a porous structure, having good adsorption properties, and possessing hydroxyl groups naturally have gained much attention as substrate. The goal of this review is to introduce molecularly imprinted polymer-grafted or molecularly imprinted polymer-coated paper, as an interesting, simple, and efficient method in the detection and separation of small and large molecules. Therefore, in the present paper, several recent preparation techniques and applications of molecularly imprinted polymer-grafted paper are reviewed and discussed in detail. Simple and visual quantitative detection of foodborne pathogens can effectively reduce the outbreaks of foodborne diseases. Herein, we developed a simple and sensitive quantum dot (QD)-based paper device for visual and quantitative detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 based on immunomagnetic separation and nanoparticle dissolution-triggered signal amplification. In this study, E. coli O157:H7 was magnetically separated and labeled with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and the AgNP labels can be converted into millions of Ag ions, which subsequently quench the fluorescence of QDs in the paper strip, which along with the readout can be visualized and quantified by the change in length of fluorescent quenched band. Owing to the high capture efficiency and effective signal amplification, as low as 500 cfu mL -1 of E. coli O157:H7 could be easily detected by naked eyes. Furthermore, this novel platform was successfully applied to detect E. coli O157:H7 in spiked milk samples with good accuracy, indicating its potential in the detection of foodborne pathogens in real samples.

A molecularly imprinted paper-based analytical device (MIP-μPAD) was developed for the sensing of bisphenol A (BPA). The platform was screen-printed onto a filter paper support, where the electrodes and the fluorescence μPADs were designed. Owing to its dual electrochemical and fluorescence responses, molecularly imprinted curcumin nanoparticles were used to sense BPA. The μPAD design was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrochemical techniques. The sensor design comprised a wide linear range from 1 to 200 μg L -1 with limits of detection of 0.47 ± 0.2 and 0.62 ± 0.3 μg L -1 (LOD, S/N = 3) for electrochemical and fluorescence sensing, respectively. Furthermore, the system showed good analytical performance such as selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. The feasibility of the MIP-μPAD was demonstrated for the sensing of BPA in seawater, foods, and polycarbonate plastic packaged water with recovery values of 97.2 and 101.8%.

Significant efforts have been made to develop robust and reliable methods for simultaneous biothiols determination in different matrices, but there still exist the problems such as easy oxidation, tedious derivatization, and difficulty in discrimination, which brings unsatisfactory results in their accuracy and fast quantification in biological samples. To overcome these problems, a simultaneous biothiols detection method combining a "selenium signature" chemical probe and paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) was proposed. In the strategy, the modified-paper substrate is used to enhance the analytical performance. Chemical probe Ebselen-NH 2 that has a specific response to biothiols was designed and covalently fixed on the surface of an oxidized paper substrate. By the identification of derivatized product with distinctive selenium isotope distribution and employment of the optimized PS-MS method, qualitative and quantitative analysis of five biothiols including glutathione (GSH), cysteine (Cys), cysteinylglycine (CysGly), N-acetylcysteine (Nac), and homocysteine (Hcy) were realized. Biothiols in plasma and cell lysates were measured with satisfactory results. The established method not only provides a novel protocol for simultaneous determination of biothiols, but also is helpful for understanding the biological and clinical roles played by these bioactive small molecules.

Simple, rapid, and accurate detection methods for saccharides are potentially applicable to various fields such as clinical and food chemistry. However, the practical applications of on-site analytical methods are still limited. To this end, herein, we propose a 96-well microtiter plate made of paper as a paper-based chemosensor array device (PCSAD) for the simultaneous classification of 12 saccharides and the quantification of fructose and glucose among 12 saccharides. The mechanism of the saccharide detection relied on an indicator displacement assay (IDA) on the PCSAD using four types of catechol dyes, 3-nitrophenylboronic acid, and the saccharides. The design of the PCSAD and the experimental conditions for the IDA were optimized using a central composite design. The chemosensors exhibited clear color changes upon the addition of saccharides on the paper because of the competitive boronate esterification. The color changes were employed for the subsequent qualitative, semiquantitative, and quantitative analyses using an automated algorithm combined with pattern recognition for digital images. A qualitative linear discrimination analysis offered discrimination of 12 saccharides with a 100% classification rate. The semiquantitative analysis of fructose in the presence of glucose was carried out from the viewpoint of food analysis utilizing a support vector machine, resulting in clear discrimination of the various concentrations of fructose. Most importantly, the quantitative detection of fructose in two types of commercial soft drinks was also successfully carried out without sample pretreatments. Thus, the proposed PCSAD can be a powerful method for on-site food analyses that can meet the increasing demand from consumers for sensors of saccharides.

A novel donor-acceptor fluorescent sensor was designed and synthesized. The sensor exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity to Zn 2+ in acetonitrile solution. When 3.0 equiv. of Zn 2+ was added gradually, the emission intensity at 500 nm increased 54-fold, accompanied by the fluorescent color of the solution changed from dark to green. Job's plot and ESI-MS were carried out to verify a 1:1 stoichiometric complex was formed between the sensor and Zn 2+ . The limit of detection (LOD) to Zn 2+ was measured to be 2.81 × 10 -9  mol L -1 . Moreover, the sensor not only could be used to detect Zn 2+ in practical water samples with high accuracy, but also could be made into test paper for the qualitative detection for Zn 2+ .

Development of selective and sensitive methods for on-site assay of tetracycline (TC) is of great significance for public health and food safety. Herein, a valid ratiometric fluorescence strategy using g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets coupled with Eu 3+ is designed for the assay of TC. In this strategy, both Eu 3+ and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets serve as the recognition units of TC. The blue fluorescence of g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets can be quenched by TC via the inner filter effect (IFE); meanwhile, the red fluorescence of Eu 3+ can be enhanced by TC through the antenna effect (AE). The synergistic effect of AE and IFE caused by TC makes the developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor display a wide linear range for TC from 0.25 to 80 μM with a detection limit of 6.5 nM and a significant fluorescence color evolution from blue to red. Given its simplicity, free-label, excellent selectivity, high sensitivity, and recognizable color change, point-of-care testing systems, including smartphones and test paper-based assays, are developed for the visual sensing of TC. The integration of smartphones and test paper on a ratiometric fluorescent sensor greatly reduces the detection cost and time, providing a promising method for the qualitative discernment and semi-quantitative assay of TC on-site. Moreover, the potential application of the approach is also verified by detecting TC in milk.

A novel colorimetric probe RP1 was synthesized using rhodamine derivatives and heterocyclic compounds for the purpose of detecting Cu 2+ . RP1 showed good selectivity, high sensitivity and affinity toward Cu 2+ over other competing ions in CH 3 OH-H 2 O (1/1, v/v) solution. Absorbance intensity showed a good linear fit between probe R1 and Cu 2+ over the concentration range 1-8 μM and the association constant was also calculated to be 1.145 × 10 5 M -1 . The sensing mechanism was deduced using Job's plot, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory studies. Fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) are added to food packaging during manufacture to improve the whiteness and brightness. It is of great significance to develop a fast and sensitive FWAs detection method because their potential hazards to human health. Herein, we found that the quaternary ammonium salt ion pair reagents could enhance the fluorescence of FWAs, and then developed a fluorescent determination method for FWA 85 in paper food packaging. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range for the determination of FWA 85 was 5-200 ng/mL (R 2  = 0.9996). The limit of detection was 1.20 ng/mL (S/N = 3) and the limit of quantitation was 3.99 ng/mL. The analytical feasibility was investigated further via determination of FWA 85 in paper food packing, which shows the recoveries were varied from 83.84% to 115.29% with RSDs from 1.64% to 7.22%. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria needs rapid identification and efficient destruction routes. This study proposes testing paper derived from electrospun fibrous mats and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) probes for trace sensing and simultaneous destruction of antibiotic-resistant E. coli. Aptamers are conjugated on fibers for selective capture of E. coli, and the capture capability can be regenerated via rinsing with salt solution. Hydroxyl tetraphenylethene (TPE) is linked with two cephalosporin molecules to construct TPE-Cep probes, and the fluorescence emission is turned on specifically in the presence of β-lactamase, which is a critical marker for screening resistant bacteria. Fibrous mats are lit up only in the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and the fluorescence intensity changes could be statistically fitted into an equation for quantitative analysis. Fibrous strips display apparent color changes from blue to green for a visual readout of bacterial levels, and the limit of detection (LOD) is much lower than those of previous paper substrates. In addition, the TPE-Cep probes could produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under room light illumination to kill the captured bacteria. Thus, the integration of aptamer-grafted electrospun fibers and functional AIE probes provides potential for selective capture, trace imaging and photodynamic destruction of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

A new-fangled C 3 -symmetric triaminoguanidine-pyrrole conjugate has been constructed and utilized for sensing applications. The probe selectively detects zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) by colorimetric as well as turn-on fluorescent manner. Further, the in-situ formed zinc ensemble displays turn-off fluorescence response towards the pyrophosphate anion (PPi) via displacement approach. Emissive off-on-off sensing characteristics of the probe has been successfully exploited to construct the INHIBIT logic gate, coding/decoding of messages and in vivo imaging of Zn 2+ /PPi in zebrafish larvae. Many lanthanide ions-based probes have been widely used for detecting anthrax spores biomarker-dipicolinic acid (DPA). However, little work has realized detection of bacillus anthrax spores in real environmental samples. In this work, a novel ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe based on europium (Eu)-doped silicon nanoparticles (Eu@SiNPs) was fabricated for the first time by one-pot method without post-modification for determination of the DPA in bacillus subtilis spores (simulant bacillus anthrax spores). Based on Eu(III) in the Eu@SiNPs could be sensitized by DPA to emit intrinsic fluorescence and the fluorescence intensity of SiNPs in the Eu@SiNPs almost remained stable, a new ratiometric fluorescent method for determination of micro DPA in bacillus subtilis spores and bacillus subtilis spores in real environmental samples, such as Yellow river water, tap water and soil was established. Under the optimum conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) of the method toward bacillus subtilis spores was as low as 2.38×10 4 spore/mL. Simple, fast and visual DPA and bacillus subtilis spores determination was also achieved by the Eu@SiNPs-based test paper. A novel Schiff base fluorescent probe 7-Hydroxy-8-(((2-(hydroxymethyl)quinolin-8-yl)imino)methyl)-coumarin (XL) consist of formylcoumarin and aminoquinoline moieties was synthesized for dual detection of Zn 2+ and Al 3+ ions. Probe XL exhibited high selective and sensitive response towards Zn 2+ and Al 3+ ions through different color changes and significant fluorescence turn-on response (270 fold higher for Zn 2+ and 230 fold higher for Al 3+ ) in MeOH-H 2 O (4/1, v/v) over other cations, with detection limits (LOD) as low as 3.75 × 10 -8 and 1.14 × 10 -8  M, respectively. Moreover, probe XL exhibited preferential selectivity for Al 3+ through displacing Zn 2+ from the XL-Zn 2+ complex by ligand-to-ligand transfer process. The binding mechanism of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) were proposed from fluorescence and UV-vis titrations, Job's plot, 1 H NMR titration, HRMS and DFT calculations. The probe was proven to be suitable for actual samples detection of Zn 2+ and Al 3+ ions. The complex XL-Zn 2+ and XL-Al 3+ exhibited dramatic fluorescent "turn-off" properties for PPi and PPi/F - respectively through snatching metal ions and released free XL. A novel ratiometric fluorescent probe for the determination of oxytetracycline (OTC) was developed. The method is based on the use of adenosine monophosphate/Eu(III) nanoscale coordination polymers doped with carbon dots (CDs) (CD@AMP/Eu NCPs). These were fabricated by self-assembly of Eu 3+ and AMP on the surface of CDs containing large amounts of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. Under the excitation at 310 nm wavelength, the doped NCPs display strong pink emission of Eu 3+ at 615 nm and blue emission of the CDs at 430 nm on exposure to OTC. The ratio of fluorescence intensity (F 615 /F 430 ) of such NCPs displays excellent linear relationship with OTC concentration ranging from 0.2 to 60 μM and the limit of detection (LOD) is 25 nM (3σ). The doped NCPs were evenly immobilized on common filter paper to prepare a visual ratiometric probe for the determination of OTC. Assisted by a digital camera with an APP color detector, the paper-based test strip was applied for the quantitative determination of OTC with a LOD of 0.5 μM and a wide linear scope of 1-100 μM. Water is one of the most widespread impurities and contaminants for pharmaceuticals and chemical products. A simple, fast and reliable water assay method is of high significance for the pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing industries. In this work, lanthanide metal-organic framework Eu-dipicolinic acid/2-aminophthalic acid (Eu-DPA/PTA-NH 2 ) was prepared as a double-color ratiometric fluorescent water sensor, which shows ultrasensitive (limit of detection 0.01% v/v) and linear broad-range (0-100% v/v) response to water. An innovative analytical device based on a one-to-two logic gate was constructed by using the water content and the two fluorescence responses as the input and output signals, respectively. The direct analysis of water content can be achieved by the four output types, NOT (0, 1), PASS 0 (0, 0), PASS 1 (1, 1), and YES (1, 0). Importantly, the metal-organic framework (MOF)-loaded fiber paper was prepared as a microsensor, and a water assay tube was designed for rapid water detection of solid pharmaceuticals via ratiometric chromaticity, coupled with a portable visual determination device. The paper-based microsensor is response-rapid (20 s), long-term stable (at least 30 days), and can achieve the accurate (relative error <9.8%) visual assay of trace water in solid pharmaceuticals. To our knowledge, this is the first time to report an MOF-based double-color ratiometric fluorescent water sensor, a water analytical logic device, and a paper-based water microsensor for point-of-care visual water assay in solid samples via ratiometric chromaticity.

Infections caused by foodborne microorganisms are a great threat to the global environment and public healthcare today. Thus, rapid, portable and sensitive assays that can realize the identification of foodborne bacteria are highly desired. In this study, a smart fluorescent and colorimetric dual-readout sensing system has been established for simple and rapid E. coli determination by utilizing the Cu 2+ -triggered oxidation of o-phenylenediamine (OPD). Initially, Cu 2+ can oxidize OPD to OPDox, resulting in an orange-yellow fluorescence and visible pale-yellow color. However, E. coli can effectively reduce Cu 2+ into Cu + , inhibiting the Cu 2+ -triggered oxidation of OPD to OPDox. Consequently, the introduction of E. coli can turn off both the fluorescence and the UV-vis absorbance signals of the OPD-Cu 2+ system, illustrating an original mechanism for fluorescent and colorimetric dual-channel detection of E. coli. Moreover, a filter paper-based visual sensor was built and coupled with OPD-Cu 2+ solution under the assistance of a UV lamp. The as-prepared sensor can detect E. coli quantitatively with the help of a typical smartphone color-scanning application (APP). Thus, this study offers a valid dual-mode assay for sensitive and on-site visible detection of E. coli, guaranteeing the reliability of the results and is more attractive for practical use. Salmon fish farmers face remarkable problems in fish rearing and handling due to the spread of disease by infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). Therefore, we developed a straightforward and sensitive technique to detect IPNV-based on recombinant human apoferritin heavy chain (hAFN-H) protein nanoparticles. In this study, the 24 subunits of the hAFN-H were genetically modified to express 6×His-tag and protein-G at their C-terminal site using Escherichia coli . We thus achieved a two-step signal amplifying strategy that utilizes a recombinant hAFN-H nanoprobe having a protein-G-binding site that targets the F c region of monoclonal antibodies and a 6×His-tag that actively interacts with the functionalized Ni-NTA derivatives. In this study, we report a considerable advancement in magnetic bead-based detection systems that use Ni-NTA-Atto 550, reliably exhibiting detection limits of 1.02 TCID 50 /mL (50% tissue culture infective dose). Additionally, we propose a lateral flow chip-based detection method that uses the hAFN-H surface functionalized with 5 nm of the Ni-NTA-nanogold complex as a nanoprobe; the limit of detection towards IPNV was 0.88 TCID 50 /mL. The detection of IPNV by this recombinant hAFN-H nanoprobe was linear to virus titers in the range of 10 1 -10 3 TCID 50 /mL.

The condensation product (L) of 4,4'-methylenedianiline and p-anisaldehyde acts as colorimetric sensor for Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ ions. On interaction with Cu 2+ , ethanolic solution of L changes its color to brown while it becomes light pink on interaction with Pb 2+ . Interaction of Al 3+ with L coated paper strip emits bright blue fluorescence. Metal ions like Mg 2+ , Cu 2+ , Li + , K + , Na + , Mn 2+ , Al 3+ , Hg 2+ , Co 2+ , Pb 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , Zn 2+ , Fe 3+ do not interfere the paper strip sensor. The fluorescent intensity of L in ethanol is quenched 25 times by Pb 2+ ion. The interaction between L and Pb 2+ is reversible and the detection limit of Pb 2+ is 10 -6  M. The binding constant and stoichiometry of binding between L and Pb 2+ was calculated to be 10 4.8 and 1:2. Theoretical calculations show that the binding of the metal ions to L are favorable and the fluorescence of L is due to π → π* transition.

Herein, an easy and effective ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe for the selective detection of Pb2+ and pyrophosphate (PPi) was developed based on label-free carbon dots (CDs). The CDs showed dual emission bands at 477 and 651 nm under a single-wavelength excitation (391 nm). Pb2+ and PPi were sequentially detected by the sensor with high reliability and accuracy via the exploitation of the fluorescence intensity ratio (F477/F651). The dual emission sensor exhibited high selectivity and excellent sensitivity for Pb2+ and PPi than for other analytes with detection limits as low as 0.055 μM and 0.089 μM, respectively. Moreover, the fluorescent CDs changed from pink to cyan and from cyan to pink and could be used as a fluorescent paper sensor for the visual detection of Pb2+ and PPi. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the ratiometric fluorescence detection of Pb2+ and PPi by CDs; therefore, the as-synthesized CDs show great potential for application in the determination of Pb2+ and PPi in real samples.

The copper(II) ion (Cu 2+ ) has played an indispensable role in diverse kinds of functional physiological processes of organisms, which has become of growing interest. Despite the fact that numerous Cu 2+ test papers using fluorescent probes have been fabricated, sensors featuring the ratiometric property that integrates quenched probes and an inner standard dye are rarely reported. Herein, a two-component ratiometric sensor in a paper-based device is proposed to realize highly selective Cu 2+ detection. To overcome shortcomings such as low signal-to-noise ratio and incorrect response of the quenching probe, a novel BODIPY-based turn-off probe (P2017) is designed and introduced into the paper-based device with better water solubility and selectivity for Cu 2+ detection. Furthermore, a reference dye (B001), exhibiting an emission at 690 nm when the excitation wavelength is 480 nm, is also introduced into the paper-based device. These two components can enhance the quality of the signal as P2017 is sensitively quenched by Cu 2+ , while B001 with a photostable property, serving as an internal benchmark, is unable to react with Cu 2+ . The results indicated that the two components provided a new concept for optimizing paper-based device fabrication and developing accurate, simple, and inexpensive Cu 2+ detection methods, which could be potentially applied to monitor human health and the environment in remote areas. An anthracene carboxyimide derivative was synthesized as a colorimetric and fluorogenic sensor to determine NO 2 with a rapid response (<4 min), excellent selectivity and a low detection limit (84 nM). Paper strips containing the sensor were applied to visually determine the NO - with a rapid response (<4 min), excellent selectivity and a low detection limit (84 nM). Paper strips containing the sensor were applied to visually determine the NO 2 - content in food.

A new highly selective and sensitive dual-mode sensor 3TD based on the conjugate of oligothiophene and barbituric acid moiety was developed for colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent detection of CN ─ . The sensor 3TD exhibited high specificity towards CN ─ by interrupting its own ICT producing thereupon a large blue-shift in UV-Vis spectrum and remarkable "turn-on" fluorescence emission. The detection limit was 2.26 × 10 ─7  M, which is quite lower than the permissible level of CN ─ in drinking water according to the WHO. The fluorescent detection of CN ─ was well demonstrated by filter paper strips and silica coated TLC plates. Moreover, the sensor was also used to detect CN ─ in environmental water and agro-products with satisfactory results. Most importantly, in terms of these advantages of colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent dual-mode, immediate response, excellent selectivity, high sensitivity, low cytotoxicity, and good biocompatibility, the sensor 3TD was successfully applied into CN - imaging in living cells, demonstrating its excellent value in practical application., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. SCN- is one of the most important anions in metabolic processes. However, the investigation of SCN- in living systems is restricted by the lack of stable functional molecular tools. Herein, the first fluorene-based polymer fluorescent probe V1 was synthesized through rational design. Compared with small molecule fluorescent probes, V1 exhibited excellent fluorescence stability in bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution. Furthermore, the V1-based paper sensor was highly selective toward SCN- in aqueous solution. Significantly, these merits of the probe V1 enable the detection of SCN- in different living cell lines and zebrafish.

Herein, we report the fast and selective detection of bilirubin by a recyclable Al(iii) based post-synthetically modified MIL-53 metal-organic framework (MOF) (1-NH2@THB). Post-synthetic modification was achieved by the aldimine condensation reaction between MIL-53-NH2 and 2,3,4-trihydroxy benzaldehyde. The post-synthetically modified compound was successfully characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) experiments. The material has huge potential to detect bilirubin in HEPES buffer medium (pH = 7.4) by a fluorescence "turn-off" mechanism. The drastic quenching in the fluorescence emission intensity of the MOF material in the presence of bilirubin is due to the inner filter effect as well as molecular interactions between the MOF material and bilirubin. The probe displayed ultra-fast response (30 s), low detection limit (1.26 pM) and high selectivity towards bilirubin with the co-existence of several metal ions and biomolecules. Moreover, the real field application of the probe was thoroughly investigated in human bio-fluids (blood serum and urine samples) by the standard addition method. Furthermore, the quenching ability of the MOF material by bilirubin was also explored on a portable paper strip device. All the above discussions indicate that the probe is a potential candidate for the clinical detection of jaundice.

A fluorometric assay was constructed for supersensitive determination of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ based on their quenching effect on the orange fluorescence of methionine-capped gold nanoclusters (Met-AuNCs). A simple one-step method was developed for the preparation of the Met-AuNCs, employing L-methionine as both a reducing and protecting reagent. Within 10 min, water soluble Met-AuNCs were obtained with an average size of 2.4 nm. Under photoexcitation at 370 nm, the Met-AuNCs possess a maximum emission at 580 nm and a quantum yield of 2.3%. The response is fast (1 min), and the selectivity for Cu 2+ and Co 2+ is high over other metal ions. The detection limits for Cu 2+ and Co 2+ are around 47 and 420 pM, respectively. The effects were used to design a test paper for visual detection of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ . Using this test paper, 1 μM of Cu 2+ /Co 2+ can be detect under the UV lamp (365 nm excitation). It is perceived to be a promising tool for the rapid on-site determination of Cu 2+ and Co 2+ in real water samples. The Jatropha curcas plant (Jatropha) has been proposed as a source of biodiesel fuel, as it yields crude glycerol as an abundant by-product. Its by-products could serve as a starting material in making glycerol for FDA-regulated products. Jatropha is not regarded as a source of edible vegetable oil since it contains phorbol esters (PEs). PEs, even at very low exposure concentrations, demonstrate various toxicities in humans and animals, but may not be detected by routine impurity analyses. Here, we demonstrate the development of a rapid and simplified method for the detection and quantification of Jatropha-derived PE toxins using ambient ionization mass spectrometry. To do this, we successfully coupled a paper spray ambient ionization source with an ion trap portable mass spectrometer. The paper spray source was assembled using chromatography papers, and analyte ions were generated by applying a high voltage to a wetted paper triangle loaded with PE standards. For method development, we used commercially available PE standards on an ion trap portable mass spectrometer. Standard solutions were prepared using ethanol with PE concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 0.0001 mg mL -1 . Spike and recovery experiments were performed using USP grade and commercially available glycerol. To discern chemical differences between samples, we applied multivariate data analysis. Based on the results obtained, paper spray coupled with a portable mass spectrometric method can be successfully adopted for the analysis of toxic contaminants present in glycerol-based consumer products with LOD and LOQ of 0.175 μg mL -1 and 0.3 μg mL -1 respectively. This direct, simple design, and low-cost sampling and ionization method enables fast screening with high sensitivity in non-laboratory settings.

Hydrazine (N 2 H 4 ) is one of the most important pnictogen hydride chemicals, and is utilized within a wide spectrum of industries. As a result of its extensive use, hydrazine's monitoring methods have constantly come under fire due to its potential health risk and the subsequent environmental pollution. Fluorometric molecular sensing systems generally report with a major emphasis on the merit of fluorescence analysis. What we are proposing within this report is a next-generation fluorescent probe that allows hydrazine to become fully traceable, within multifarious environments that show fast and intuitional fluorescence transformation. A new sensing moiety, ortho-methoxy-methyl-ether ( o-OMOM) incorporated electron donor (D)-acceptor (A) type naphthaldehyde provides high selectivity and sensitivity amidst its superiority within practical applications for sensing hydrazine. The new probe overcomes most of the drawbacks of currently used fluorescent probes, and due to its successful demonstrations, such as real-time spray-based sensing, soil analysis, and two-photon tissue imaging, its potential for practical application is beyond reproach.

A paper-based platform was investigated in which the selective detection of oligonucleotide targets by hybridization was accomplished via the enhancement of fluorescence emission from intrinsically labeled DNA probes that were immobilized on the surface of quantum dots (QDs). Multiple copies of a derivative of thiazole orange, an intercalating dye known to form non-emissive dimers, were conjugated to single-stranded oligonucleotide probes. Dimerization resulted in the formation of H-aggregates where excitonic interactions led to the suppression of fluorescence. The hybridization of the oligonucleotide probe with a complementary target resulted in the enhancement of fluorescence emission as the dimers dissociated and the dyes preferentially intercalated with the duplex. The detection of oligonucleotide targets using this configuration eliminated the need for labeling the target strands, and fluorescence intensity was proportional to the extent of hybridization. In addition, the dye molecules were excited using Foerster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) from QD donors, which resulted in improved selectivity and allowed for ratiometric detection. A solution-phase hybridization assay based on similar operational principles has been previously reported, and this new work investigated the advantages offered for this transduction scheme using paper-based solid-phase substrates. QD-probe conjugates were immobilized in sufficient density on the paper matrix to provide for multiple-donor-multiple-acceptor interactions that resulted in a 20-fold enhancement of acceptor emission compared to the solution-based assay, providing a limit of detection of 0.1 pmol. The paper-based assay provided for the reduction of the time needed for sample preparation and data acquisition, demonstrated that transduction was possible in a complex matrix (goat serum) without compromising on the performance observed in buffer solution, and that oligonucleotides generated from standard PCR amplification could be detected.

Highly selective and sensitive detection of guanosine 3'-diphosphate-5'-diphosphate (ppGpp), namely, the stringent in plants or microorganisms responding to strict or extreme environmental conditions such as stress and starvation, which plays an important role in gene expression, rRNA and antibiotics production, regulations of virulence of bacteria, and growth of plants, faces a great challenge owing to its extreme similarity to normal nucleotides. By modifying the surface groups of a facile two-step hydrothermal route prepared carbon dots (CDs) with terbium ions (Tb 3+ ) in this contribution, a novel fluorescent probe with excellent properties such as highly physical and chemical stability, narrow emission and excitation wavelength-independent emission was prepared. The Tb 3+ ions on the surface of CDs cannot only preserve the intrinsic fluorescence (FL) of CDs but also keep its own coordination capacity with rare earth complex, and thus the clamp structure (four phosphate groups) of ppGpp can specific binding with Tb 3+ ions on the surface of CDs to produce antenna effect. Therefore, a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent ratiometry of ppGpp was developed by terbium-modified carbon dots (CDs-Tb) with the limit of detection as low as 50 nM based on the synergistic effect of antenna effect of Tb 3+ ions and specific recognition capacity of CDs. The applicability of this assay was demonstrated by CDs-Tb-based paper sensor for high distinguishing ppGpp from other nucleotides with similar structure.

Paper-based cultures are an emerging platform for preparing 3D tissue-like structures. Chemical gradients can be imposed upon these cultures, generating microenvironments similar to those found in poorly vascularized tumors. There is increasing evidence that the tumor microenvironment is responsible for promoting drug resistance and increased invasiveness. Acidosis, or the acidification of the extracellular space, is particularly important in promoting these aggressive cancer phenotypes. To better understand how cells respond to acidosis there is a need for 3D culture platforms that not only model relevant disease states but also contain sensors capable of quantifying small molecules in the extracellular environment. In this work, we describe pH-sensing optodes that are capable of generating high spatial and temporal resolution maps of pH gradients in paper-based cultures. This sensor was fabricated by suspending microparticles containing pH-sensitive (fluorescein) and pH-insensitive (diphenylanthracene) dyes in a polyurethane hydrogel, which was then coated onto a transparent film. The pH-sensing films have a fast response time, are reversible, stable in long-term culture environments, have minimal photobleaching, and are not cytotoxic. These films have a pK a of 7.61 ± 0.04 and are sensitive in the pH range corresponding to normal and tumorigenic tissues. With these optodes, we measured the spatiotemporal evolution of pH gradients in paper-based tumor models.

In this article, red-emitting copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) were prepared in the matrix of bovine serum albumin (BSA) through using N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O as a reducing agent and BSA as a stabilizer. In the aqueous suspension of BSA-Cu NCs, the addition of rutin enabled the combination of rutin with BSA around Cu NCs via hydrogen bond and electrostatic interactions between functional groups of BSA and rutin. The approaching of rutin to Cu NCs induced that the fluorescence (FL) of Cu NCs was quenched by rutin due to the electron transfer from Cu NCs to rutin. Under the optimal conditions, the FL of Cu NCs was linearly decreased with the increase of rutin concentration from 0.1 to100 μM, together with a low detection limit of ca. 0.02μM. The FL quenching responses of Cu NCs were highly selective and sensitive towards rutin, over potential interferents in real human serum samples. Based on BSA-Cu NCs, this as-proposed FL probe exhibited a superior capability of rutin detection in real human serum samples. A novel simple and readily synthesized turn-on fluorescent probe 4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-1,3-phenylene bis(2-chloroacetate) (BPBC) for cysteine (Cys) was reported. This probe was designed based on an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) dye: benzothiazole, and two chloroacetate groups present in benzothiazole as the reaction sites for Cys. It shows high selectivity and sensitivity for Cys over other amino acids including the similar structured homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH). In addition, probe BPBC was successfully applied to bioimage intracellular Cys in living cells with low cytotoxicity. Phthalocyanine-BODIPY dye (BODIPY = boron dipyrromethene) was synthesized, fully characterized, and used for molecular recognition of CYFRA 21-1, a lung cancer biomarker, from whole blood samples. Thin films of three magnesium oxides ((MgO) n , where n = 8, 9, or 10)) were deposited on a paper substrate, and they were immersed in a solution of phthalocyanine-BODIPY dye (1.17 × 10 -3  mol/L) for the design of stochastic sensors. Limits of determination of picograms per milliliter magnitude order were recorded for the proposed stochastic sensors. CYFRA 21-1 was reliably identified and determined with recoveries higher than 95% and RSD lower than 1% in whole blood samples.

We describe the design and characteristics of a paper-based analytical device for analyte concentration enrichment. The device, called a hybrid paper-based analytical device (hyPAD), uses faradaic electrochemistry to create an ion depletion zone (IDZ), and hence a local electric field, within a nitrocellulose flow channel. Charged analytes are concentrated near the IDZ when their electrophoretic and electroosmotic velocities balance. This process is called faradaic ion concentration polarization. The hyPAD is simple to construct and uses only low-cost materials. The hyPAD can be tuned for optimal performance by adjusting the applied voltage or changing the electrode design. Moreover, the throughput of hyPAD is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional, micron-scale microfluidic devices. The hyPAD is able to concentrate a range of analytes, including small molecules, DNA, proteins, and nanoparticles, in the range of 200-500-fold within 5 min.

Glutathione is an important antioxidant found in body fluids and tissues, which inhibit damage to essential cellular constituents caused by reactive oxygen species. The analysis of glutathione levels in biological systems is important in early clinical diagnosis. A novel, cost-effective synthetic strategy has been developed for the fluorescent probe ethylenediamine passivated carbon dots. Tissue paper was chosen as the carbon source for this "green one pot" synthesis. Glutathione could induce quenching of the fluorescence intensity of ethylenediamine passivated carbon dots through surface interactions, resulting from their aggregation. Based on this, a novel fluorescence sensor was fabricated for the determination of Glutathione in body fluids. A linear calibration graph was obtained in the range of 6.0 × 10 -7 to 5.0 × 10 -8 M with a detection limit of 1.74 × 10 -9 M. The developed sensor was successfully used for the determination of glutathione in artificial saliva samples.

Fluorescent test papers are promising for the wide applications in the assays of diagnosis, environments and foods, but unlike classical dye-absorption-based pH test paper, they are usually limited in the qualitative yes/no type of detection by fluorescent brightness, and the colorimetry-based quantification remains a challenging task. Here, we report a single dual-emissive nanofluorophore probe to achieve the consecutive color variations from blue to red for the quantification of blood glucose on its as-prepared test papers. Red quantum dots were embedded into silica nanoparticles as a stable internal standard emission, and blue carbon dots (CDs) were further covalently linked onto the surface of silica, in which the ratiometric fluorescence intensity of blue to red is controlled at 5:1. While the oxidation of glucose induced the formation of Fe(3+) ions, the blue emission of CDs was thus quenched by the electron transfer from CDs to Fe(3+), displaying a serial of consecutive color variations from blue to red with the dosage of glucose. The high-quality test papers printed by the probe ink exhibited a dosage-sensitive allochromatic capability with the clear differentiations of ~5, 7, 9, 11mM glucose in human serum (normal: 3-8mM). The blood glucose determined by the test paper was almost in accordance with that measured by a standard glucometer. A simple and effective ratiometric fluorescence nanosensor for the selective detection of Cu(2+) has been developed by covalently connecting the carboxyl-modified red fluorescent cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs) to the amino-functionalized blue fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs). The sensor exhibits the dual-emissions peaked at 437 and 654 nm, under a single excitation wavelength of 340 nm. The red fluorescence can be selectively quenched by Cu(2+), while the blue fluorescence is a internal reference, resulting in a distinguishable fluorescence color change from pink to blue under a UV lamp. The detection limit of this highly sensitive ratiometric probe is as low as 0.36 nM, which is lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defined limit (20 μM). Moreover, a paper-based sensor has been prepared by printing the hybrid carbon dots-quantum dots probe on a microporous membrane, which provides a convenient and simple approach for the visual detection of Cu(2+). Therefore, the as-synthesized probe shows great potential application for the determination of Cu(2+) in real samples.

In this work, a novel ratiometric fluorescent probe was developed for rapid, highly accurate, sensitive and selective detection of mercury(II) (Hg(2+)) based on terbium(III)/gold nanocluster conjugates (Tb(3+)/BSA-AuNCs), in which bovine serum albumin capped gold nanoclusters (BSA-AuNCs) acted as the signal indicator and terbium(III) (Tb(3+)) was used as the build-in reference. Our proposed ratiometric fluorescent probe exhibited unique specificity toward Hg(2+) against other common environmentally and biologically important metal ions, and had high accuracy and sensitivity with a low detection limit of 1 nM. In addition, our proposed probe was effectively employed to detect Hg(2+) in the biological samples from the artificial Hg(2+)-infected rats. More significantly, an appealing paper-based visual sensor for Hg(2+) was designed by using filter paper embedded with Tb(3+)/BSA-AuNC conjugates, and we have further demonstrated its feasibility for facile fluorescent sensing of Hg(2+) in a visual format, in which only a handheld UV lamp is used. In the presence of Hg(2+), the paper-based visual sensor, illuminated by a handheld UV lamp, would undergo a distinct fluorescence color change from red to green, which can be readily observed with naked eyes even in trace Hg(2+) concentrations. The Tb(3+)/BSA-AuNC-derived paper-based visual sensor is cost-effective, portable, disposable and easy-to-use. This work unveiled a facile approach for accurate, sensitive and selective measuring of Hg(2+) with self-calibration.

A bifunctional fluorescent probe based on a carbazole-pyrimidine conjugate for Hg(2+) and Cu(2+) detection was designed and synthesized. Probe 3 exhibits red shifts in its absorption and fluorescence spectra with significant visual color changes in the presence of these ions. The detection limits of probe 3 for these metal ions were in the nanomolar range. The probe could also be useful as a solid optical sensor for Hg(2+) and Cu(2+).

Low-cost paper-based assays are emerging as the platform for diagnostics worldwide. Paper does not, however, readily enable advanced functionality required for complex diagnostics, such as analyte concentration and controlled analyte transport. That is, after the initial wetting, no further analyte manipulation is possible. Here, we demonstrate active concentration and transport of analytes in fully wet paper-based assays by leveraging nanoporous material (mean pore diameter ≈ 4 nm) and ion concentration polarization. Two classes of devices are developed, an external stamp-like device with the nanoporous material separate from the paper-based assay, and an in-paper device patterned with the nanoporous material. Experimental results demonstrate up to 40-fold concentration of a fluorescent tracer in fully wet paper, and directional transport of the tracer over centimeters with efficiencies up to 96%. In-paper devices are applied to concentrate protein and colored dye, extending their limits of detection from ∼10 to ∼2 pmol/mL and from ∼40 to ∼10 μM, respectively. This approach is demonstrated in nitrocellulose membrane as well as paper, and the added cost of the nanoporous material is very low at ∼0.015 USD per device. The result is a major advance in analyte concentration and manipulation for the growing field of low-cost paper-based assays.

We describe a paper microfluidic-based enzyme catalyzed double microreactor assay using fluorescent detection. Here, solutions of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and diaphorase (DI) were directly spotted onto the microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD). Samples containing lactic acid, resazurin, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide oxidized form (NAD(+) ), potassium chloride (KCl), and BSA, in MES buffer were separately spotted onto the μPAD and MES buffer flowed through the device. A cascade reaction occurs upon the sample spot overlapping with LDH to form pyruvate and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide reduced form (NADH). Subsequently, NADH is used in the conversion of resazurin to fluorescent resorufin by DI. The μPAD avoids the need of surface functionalization or enzyme immobilization steps. Fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) are highly soluble and poorly biodegradable ingredients used in laundry detergents and in industries (paper, textile, plastic manufacturing). They are likely to pass through biological wastewater treatment systems. The presence of FWAs in a mountain river was detected by monitoring the decay of synchronous fluorescence intensity at λ(ex)=360 nm after exposing samples to ultraviolet (UV) light (365 nm), for mimicking sunlight, for 15 min. The method was first validated on four commercial FWAs (DAS-1, FB28, DMA-X and CBS-X) in different water matrices (deionized water and pristine river water in the presence of humic acid and dyes). A 40% decay was observed after 15 min for the least photosensitive FWA (CBS-X). A field application was then performed on samples collected along a mountain river in which impacts of FWAs from domestic sources (laundry greywater) and industrial sources (paper and textile mills) were suspected. Variations of fluorescence decay at λ(ex)=360 nm could be explained by these potential sources of pollution. It is suggested that the fluorescence decay at λ(ex)=280 nm also be considered as an indicator, as some FWAs can exhibit fluorescence at that excitation wavelength., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This paper describes the application of a luminescent lipid stain, nile red, for the development of latent fingermarks on porous surfaces. An optimised formulation is presented that provides rapid development of latent fingermarks on porous surfaces that are or have been wet. A comparison with physical developer (PD), the method of choice to enhance such fingermarks, indicated that nile red was a simpler and more stable technique for the development of fingermarks. The nile red formulation showed similar performance to PD across a range of substrates and ageing conditions, although PD still showed greater sensitivity on five-year-old examination booklets used in a pseudo-operational study. The pseudo-operational trial also indicated that nile red consistently developed different fingermarks to those enhanced by PD, suggesting that it preferentially targets a different fraction of the latent fingermark deposit. Rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of explosives such as 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), especially using a facile paper sensor, is in high demand for homeland security and public safety. Although many strategies have been successfully developed for the detection of TNT, it is not easy to differentiate the influence from TNP. Also, few methods were demonstrated for the selective detection of TNP. In this work, via a facile and versatile method, 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum (Alq(3))-based bluish green fluorescent composite nanospheres were successfully synthesized through self-assembly under vigorous stirring and ultrasonic treatment. These polymer-coated nanocomposites are not only water-stable but also highly luminescent. Based on the dramatic and selective fluorescence quenching of the nanocomposites via adding TNP into the aqueous solution, a sensitive and robust platform was developed for visual detection of TNP in the mixture of nitroaromatics including TNT, 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), and nitrobenzene (NB). Meanwhile, the fluorescence intensity is proportional to the concentration of TNP in the range of 0.05-7.0 μg/mL with the 3σ limit of detection of 32.3 ng/mL. By handwriting or finger printing with TNP solution as ink on the filter paper soaked with the fluorescent nanocomposites, the bluish green fluorescence was instantly and dramatically quenched and the dark patterns were left on the paper. Therefore, a convenient and rapid paper sensor for TNP-selective detection was fabricated.

A chemosensor having a bipodal thiocarbamate scaffold attached to histidine moieties senses Hg(2+) with a remarkable selectivity. The binding results in a 50 nm blue shift in the fluorescence spectra and a 19-fold enhancement of the fluorescence quantum yield of the ligand. In addition to the detection of Hg(2+) visually under UV light in solution, the chemosensor was used for fabrication of paper strips that detected Hg(2+) in aqueous samples. The sensor was also used for imaging Hg(2+) in adult zebrafish and in human epithelial carcinoma HeLa S3 cells.
