An essay is presented on comparison works of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne and Swiss writer Madame de Staël. It explores their contemporary concept of literary patterns for issues related to women such as sexual freedom, domestic economy and social reform. It also notes on their contribution and influence to the promotion of American literature and feminism.

As part of a graduate class assignment, I was asked to semiotically analyze and reinterpret the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood. In doing so, I discovered that the "innocent" fairy tale is riddled with problems; mainly, that Little Red Riding Hood is made to seem at fault, a provocateur, for the wolf 's attention. In this written monologue, my response to the course assignment, I grapple with my own, inner Little Red Riding Hood, and how my 21st-century feminist views can return the girl power to the voiceless heroine of the Brothers Grimm. This article discusses the emergence of economic criticism as an interpretive tool in the Feminist study of early American literature. The article describes the intersection of social, political, and cultural criticism with the study of economic factors that affected early American women authors. The study of "gendered economics" is discussed, along with ways in which women influenced their environment through economic means. Other subjects under discussion include the socio-cultural significance of market growth, transatlantic trade, slavery, property laws, paper money, debt, and insurance.

This article discusses the regression of privilege of Feminist scholarship in academic studies of early American women. The author describes how the emphasis on gender studies has inadvertently led to a deprivileging of Feminist literary studies exclusively devoted to the study of women. The author argues that the need to emphasize exclusive Feminist scholarship is tied to issues of social justice. Other subjects under discussion include the categorical meaning of the term "woman," goddess worship, and the concept of women's liberation and rights.

Lu Yin (1899-1935), a modern Chinese writer, employed a variety of vernacular genres to explore women's living conditions at the turn of the twentieth century. With her vision of nuquanzhuyi (feminism) and her conceptualization of writing, Lu Yin modeled herself as a feminist rhetorician and employed redefinition and diary/epistolary fiction as major rhetorical strategies to challenge the sexist assumptions in the prevailing patriarchal discourses and to empower Chinese women. Feminist literary theory and criticism have taken the human body as a relevant guideline to explain literary texts written by women. However, they have neglected an equally important aspect: the poetic function of language. This article is an attempt to bring back to the theoretical discussion the need to strike a balance between the communicative and the poetic functions of language, both of which are inherent to the literary text. The main object of this paper is an analysis of feminist literary criticism on the medieval Castilian exempla. The contribution of feminist criticism to medieval studies has been very important, with interesting analyses of misogyny towards the female characters in exempla. The article focuses on the novel "La Scherezada criolla: ensayos sobre escritura femenina latinoamericana," by Helena Araújo in Colombia. It states that the novel was published in the early years of feminist literary criticism from Latin America, which gave readers one of the first theoretically informed books of feminist criticism by a Latin American critic. According to the article, feminist literary criticism first gained strength as a discipline in the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, until the late 1980s, when La Scherezada criolla and other early forays into Latin American feminist criticism were published, there was little sustained focus of feminist criticism by specific writers, with an attempt to sketch an alternative female canon.

The article focuses on periodical literary criticism during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. During the second half of the eighteenth century, as Great Britain saw a rapid increase in both literacy and the volume of new publications, an innovative form of periodical appeared—the literary review. Periodicals commenting upon literature had for some time enjoyed great popularity and influence. Literary reviews came to dominate the practice of literary criticism by the beginning of the nineteenth century, determining the shape of Romantic-era popular literary taste. These new publications offered writers plentiful opportunities for paid work and provided a venue where they could hone theft critical and creative skills, and so helped to drive the shift during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries from an amateur literary culture grounded in patronage to a professional one in which the relationship between writers and theft booksellers and editors emphasized clear terms of payment. Although women frequently turned to writing as a source of income, criticism for a well-known literary review remained during these years by and large the province of men. The years preceding the British Victorian era present very few opportunities to become acquainted with the work of a professional woman literary critic.

This article examines feminism as depicted in the book, Clan of the Cave Bear and the three other novels in Jean Auel's Earth's Children series. According to critic Bernard Gallagher, the Clan of the Cave Bear constitutes a failed feminist novel. Gallagher reports that he initially regarded the novel as a real triumph but is disappointed in the book. Gallagher suggested that the book reflects the view that relations between the sexes are a matter of either/or, wherein either men are dominant or women are dominant. Gallagher sees the book primarily as a tale of the conflict between an independent and talented woman and a patriarchal cultural that reviles her. Yet, Gallagher argues that the book contain certain elements that prevent it from fitting a feminist category. Allegedly, within a broader context, Auel's work can be considered feminist. Auel's feminism might be described as one that entails equality of access to political power and occupations, and a blending of gender roles. Gallagher finds Auel's account of the sexism embedded in Clan customs and language to be a truly feminist critique. In addition, Gallagher notes that the independence of the main character in the book has led her to banishment.

The article argues that art educators who write on feminism must begin to use the feminist language in order to attract theorists and practitioners to adopt this idea. The author believes that the strategy used by many feminist literary critics to present their feminist ideas will not encourage majority of the practitioners to participate in their discourse.
