Background: Most people often consume alcohol cumulatively and gradually. Yet almost scientific knowledge about alcohol’s acute effects on cognition, behavior, and affect stems from laboratory studies that employ a single beverage administration procedure. Objective: This study tests the hypothesis that alcohol’s acute effects depend on both methods of administration and alcohol blood level. We introduce a new laboratory procedure for studying cumulative alcohol drinking and examine alcohol’s effects on emotion recognition as a function of both alcohol administration method and alcohol blood level. Methods: Participants were recruited for one of two studies. One study employed a between-subject design using a single alcoholic dose. Participants were randomly assigned to drink either placebo (0.00%), low (0.03%), moderate (0.06%), or high (0.09%) alcohol levels. The second study employed a within-subject design using a cumulative alcoholic administration method, in which each participant drank four drinks (placebo, followed by three alcoholic drinks). Both groups reached similar breath alcohol concentrations. In both studies, participants attended a single study session, in which emotion recognition was examined following alcohol administration. Results: Single alcoholic beverage administration method caused greater impairment in emotion recognition ability, specifically for anger, happiness, and fear, as compared with cumulative administration method, even though breath alcohol levels were similar in both conditions. Conclusions: This paper presents questions concerning the internal validity of previous laboratory studies that use a single beverage administration procedure. Insights into the effects of alcohol on behavior, as well as regarding our knowledge about models of addiction are presented.

The transition to fatherhood may be challenged with anxiety and trepidation. A high prevalence has been found for paternal depression and it is reactive to maternal depression. This review aims to address potential sources of paternal depression, which may have adverse consequences on child development. We describe through three hypotheses how fathers may be at risk of depression during the transition to fatherhood: (1) psychological (interacting with ecological systems); (2) brain functional∖structural changes; and (3) (epi)genomic. We propose that paternal stressful experiences during the transition to fatherhood may be the source for paternal depression through direct stressful paternal experiences or via (potential, currently debated) nonexperienced (by the father) epigenomic transgenerational transmission. On the other hand, we suggest that resilient fathers may undergo a transient dysphoric period affected by identifying with the newborn's vulnerability as well as with the mother's postpartum vulnerability resulting in "paternity blues." In accordance with recent views on paternal "heightened sensitivity" toward the infant, we propose that the identification of both parents with the vulnerability of the newborn creates a sensitive period of Folie a Deux (shared madness) which may be a healthy transient, albeit a quasi-pathological period, recruited by the orienting response of the newborn for survival.

Summary Ultraviolet (UV) light affects endocrinological and behavioral aspects of sexuality via an unknown mechanism. Here we discover that ultraviolet B (UVB) exposure enhances the levels of sex-steroid hormones and sexual behavior, which are mediated by the skin. In female mice, UVB exposure increases hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis hormone levels, resulting in larger ovaries; extends estrus days; and increases anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) expression. UVB exposure also enhances the sexual responsiveness and attractiveness of females and male-female interactions. Conditional knockout of p53 specifically in skin keratinocytes abolishes the effects of UVB. Thus, UVB triggers a skin-brain-gonadal axis through skin p53 activation. In humans, solar exposure enhances romantic passion in both genders and aggressiveness in men, as seen in analysis of individual questionaries, and positively correlates with testosterone level. Sexual dimorphisms are responsible for profound metabolic differences in health and behavior. Whether males and females react differently to environmental cues, such as solar ultraviolet (UV) exposure, is unknown. Here we show that solar exposure induces food-seeking behavior, food intake, and food-seeking behavior and food intake in men, but not in women, through epidemiological evidence of approximately 3,000 individuals throughout the year. In mice, UVB exposure leads to increased food-seeking behavior, food intake and weight gain, with a sexual dimorphism towards males. In both mice and human males, increased appetite is correlated with elevated levels of circulating ghrelin. Specifically, UVB irradiation leads to p53 transcriptional activation of ghrelin in skin adipocytes, while a conditional p53-knockout in mice abolishes UVB-induced ghrelin expression and food-seeking behavior. In females, estrogen interferes with the p53–chromatin interaction on the ghrelin promoter, thus blocking ghrelin and food-seeking behavior in response to UVB exposure. These results identify the skin as a major mediator of energy homeostasis and may lead to therapeutic opportunities for sex-based treatments of endocrine-related diseases.

The current study explores the therapeutic potential of Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound in the Cannabis plant, using both sexes of 2 “depressive-like” genetic models, Wistar Kyoto (WKY) and Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats. Rats ingested CBD (30 mg/kg) orally. In the saccharin preference test, following a previous report of a pro-hedonic effect of CBD in male WKY, we now found similar results in female WKY. CBD also decreased immobility in the forced swim test in males (both strains) and in female WKY. These findings suggest a role for CBD in treating mental disorders with prominent symptoms of helplessness and anhedonia.

Background and aim Studies have shown that increased maternal cortisol level is associated with child adverse health outcomes. Hair cortisol (HC) is suitable for assessing long-term circulating cortisol concentration. Only two previous studies reported beneficial associations between cortisol and residential greenness during pregnancy and no study focused on the first trimester. Our aim was to evaluate the association between residential greenness and first trimester HC levels among pregnant women in Israel. Methods Women were recruited during second and third trimesters. Hair samples were collected from the scalp and retrospective HC levels during the first trimester were quantified for 217 women. HC levels were natural log transformed and outliers were excluded. Based on geocoded birth address, small area sociodemographic status (SES) and mean residential surrounding greenness were calculated using high-resolution satellite-based Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data at 100, 300 and 500-m buffers in a cross-sectional approach. In addition, longitudinal exposure to mean greenness during a week preconception and during the first trimester were calculated. Missing covariates were imputed and linearity of the associations were evaluated. Generalized linear models were used to estimate the crude and adjusted associations controlled for the relevant covariates. Results After exclusion of outliers, for 211 women, crude and adjusted beneficial associations between exposure to higher mean NDVI and HC levels were observed for all the exposure measures. An increase in 1 interquartile range of greenness (100 m buffer) was associated with a statistically significant lower estimated natural log mean HC level (−0.27 95% CI: −0.44; −0.11). The associations were robust to adjustment for covariates. The findings were consistent for different buffers, for the longitudinal approach, when all observations were included in the analysis and slightly stronger associations were observed for women with addresses geocoded at the home or street level. For most of the exposure measures, stronger associations were observed among those of lower sociodemographic status. Conclusion Our findings that more greenness associated with reduced maternal cortisol levels measured in the hair during the first trimester, could have substantial implications for urban planners and public health professional. If our observations will be replicated, it may present a useful avenue for public-health intervention to promote health through the provision of greenness exposure during early pregnancy, specifically to disadvantage populations.

To date, there is no overarching proposition for the ontogenetic-neurobiological basis of self-regulation. This paper suggests that the balanced self-regulatory reaction of the fetus, newborn and infant is based on a complex mechanism starting from early brainstem development and continuing to progressive control of the cortex over the brainstem. It is suggested that this balance occurs through the synchronous reactivity between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, both which originate from the brainstem. The paper presents an evidence-based approach in which molecular excitation-inhibition balance, interchanges between excitatory and inhibitory roles of neurotransmitters as well as cardiovascular and white matter development across gestational ages, are shown to create sympathetic-parasympathetic synchrony, including the postnatal development of electroencephalogram waves and vagal tone. These occur in developmental milestones detectable in the same time windows (sensitive periods of development) within a convergent systematic progress. This ontogenetic stepwise process is termed “the self-regulation clock” and suggest that this clock is located in the largest connection between the brainstem and the cortex, the corticospinal tract. This novel evidence-based new theory paves the way towards more accurate hypotheses and complex studies of self-regulation and its biological basis, as well as pointing to time windows for interventions in preterm infants. The paper also describes the developing indirect signaling between the suprachiasmatic nucleus and the corticospinal tract. Finally, the paper proposes novel hypotheses for molecular, structural and functional investigation of the “clock” circuitry, including its associations with other biological clocks. This complex circuitry is suggested to be responsible for the developing self-regulatory functions and their neurobehavioral correlates.

Background Several studies have shown inconsistent associations between anxiety during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcome. This inconsistency may be due to lack of controlling for the timing and type of maternal anxiety. We aimed to isolate a specific type of anxiety - maternal anxiety propensity, which is not directly related to pregnancy, and evaluate its association with adverse pregnancy outcome. Methods We conducted a prospective observational study of 512 pregnant women, followed to delivery. The trait anxiety scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventories was used in order to detect a propensity towards anxiety. The association between anxiety propensity (defined as trait-anxiety subscale score above 38) and adverse pregnancy outcome was evaluated. Primary outcome was a composite outcome including preterm birth prior to 37 gestational weeks, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, small for gestational age newborn and gestational diabetes mellitus. Secondary outcomes were each one of the above mentioned gestational complications. Results There were no significant between-group differences in adverse pregnancy outcomes, including the rate of preterm birth, hypertensive disorders, small for gestational age, gestational diabetes or a composite outcome of them all. Conclusion Anxiety propensity is not associated with adverse pregnancy outcome. Olanzapine-induced weight gain is associated with atherosclerosis, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes. We synthesized a novel antipsychotic drug (PGW5) possessing an olanzapine moiety linked to sarcosine, a glycine transporter 1 inhibitor. In this study, we compared the metabolic effects of PGW5 and olanzapine in a female rat model of weight gain. Female rats were treated daily with oral olanzapine (4 mg/kg), PGW5 (25 mg/kg), or vehicle for 16 days. Behavioral tests were conducted on days 12-14. Biochemical analyses were performed at the end of the treatment. A significant increase in body weight was observed in the olanzapine-treated group, while the PGW5 group did not differ from the controls. The open field test showed hypo-locomotion in the olanzapine-treated animals as compared to PGW5 and control groups. A significant increase in hypothalamic protein expression of the neuropeptide Y5 receptor and a decrease in pro-opiomelanocortin messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels were detected following PGW5 treatment, but not after olanzapine administration. PGW5 appears to possess minor metabolic effects compared with the parent compound olanzapine. The differential modulation of brain peptides associated with appetite regulation is possibly involved in the attenuation of metabolic effects by PGW5.

This study aimed to determine whether epigenetic malprogramming induced by high-fat diet (HFD) has an obesogenic effect on nonmated and mated female rats and their offspring. Further, it aimed to reprogram offspring's epigenetic malprogramming and phenotype by providing normal diet after weaning. Body weight (BW) was measured, and plasma and hypothalamic arcuate nuclei were collected for analysis of hormones, mRNA, and DNA CpG methylation of the promoter of Pomc, a key factor in control of food intake. In nonmated females, HFD decreased Pomc/leptin ratio by ∼38%. This finding was associated with Pomc promoter hypermethylation. While heavier during pregnancy, during lactation HFD dams showed sharper BW decrease (2.5-fold) and loss of Pomc promoter hypermethylation. Moreover, their weight loss was correlated with demethylation (r=−0.707) and with gadd45b mRNA expression levels (r=0.905). Even though offspring of HFD dams ate standard chow from weaning, they displayed increased BW, Pomc promoter hypermethylation, and vulnerability to HFD challenge (3-fold kilocalorie intake increase). These findings demonstrate a long-term effect of maternal HFD on CpG methylation of the Pomc promoter in the offspring, which was not reprogrammed by standard chow from weaning. Further, the results suggest a possible mechanism of demethylation of the Pomc promoter following pregnancy and lactation.—Marco, A., Kisliouk, T., Tabachnik, T., Meiri, N., Weller, A. Background This study used path-analysis to examine the assumption that the presence of mental pain in adults mediates the relationship between self-destruction, number of losses experienced in one’s life, and suicidal tendency. Methods Fifty suicidal inpatients, 50 non-suicidal inpatients and 50 healthy volunteers were assessed for self-destruction, losses experienced, depression, suicidal tendency, and mental pain. Results Self-destruction was found to have both a direct effect on suicidal tendency as well as one mediated by the presence of mental pain. Number of losses effected suicidal tendency only indirectly, mediated by the presence of mental pain. Overall, self-destruction was a more significant determinant of suicidal tendency than were the number of losses experienced during one’s life. A competing model, with depression replacing mental pain as the mediator, was also found to fit the data. Discussion These findings provide evidence that the presence of mental pain is a mediator in the relationships between both self-destruction and number of losses experienced, and between suicidal tendencies. More studies are needed in order to further differentiate between mental pain and depression as mediators in suicidal tendency.

Maternal obesity is a risk factor for offspring obesity. The melanocortin 4 receptor (Mc4r) is one of the mediators of food intake and energy balance. The present study examined the epigenetic mechanisms underlying altered Mc4r levels in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus in the offspring of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese dams and sought to elucidate the role of thyroid hormones in epigenetic regulation and tagging of their nucleosome at the Mc4r promoter. Female Wistar rats were fed an HFD or standard chow from weaning through gestation and lactation. Epigenetic alterations were analyzed in the offspring on postnatal day 21 at the Mc4r promoter using chromatin immunoprecipitation and bisulfite sequencing. To study the role of triiodothyronine (T3) in Mc4r downregulation, dams received methimazole (MMI), an inhibitor of thyroid hormone production. Offspring of HFD-fed dams had a greater body weight, elevated plasma T3 concentrations, and lower Mc4r messenger RNA levels than controls. At the Mc4r promoter, offspring of HFD-fed mothers demonstrated increased histone 3 lysine 27 acetylation (H3K27ac) with a greater association to thyroid hormone receptor-β (TRβ), an inhibitor of Mc4r transcription. Moreover, TRβ coimmunoprecipitated with H3K27ac, supporting their presence in the same complex. Maternal MMI administration prevented the HFD reduction in Mc4r levels, the increase in TRβ, and the increase in the TRβ-H3K27ac association, providing further support for the role of T3 in downregulating Mc4r levels. These findings demonstrate that a perinatal HFD environment affects Mc4r regulation through a T3 metabolic pathway involving histone acetylation of its promoter.

Stress-related psychopathology is highly prevalent among elderly individuals and is associated with detrimental effects on mood, appetite and cognition. Conversely, under certain circumstances repeated mild-to-moderate stressors have been shown to enhance cognitive performance in rodents and exert stress-inoculating effects in humans. As most stress-related favorable outcomes have been reported in adolescence and young-adulthood, this apparent disparity could result from fundamental differences in how aging organisms respond to stress. Furthermore, given prominent age-related alterations in sex hormones, the effect of chronic stress in aging females remains a highly relevant yet little studied issue. In the present study, female C57BL/6 mice aged 3 (young-adult) and 20-23 (old) months were subjected to 8 weeks of chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). Behavioral outcomes were measured during the last 3 weeks of the CUS protocol, followed by brain dissection for histological and molecular end points. We found that in young-adult female mice, CUS resulted in decreased anxiety-like behavior and enhanced cognitive performance, whereas in old female mice it led to weight loss, dysregulated locomotion and memory impairment. These phenotypes were paralleled by differential changes in the expression of hypothalamic insulin and melanocortin-4 receptors and were consistent with an age-dependent reduction in the dynamic range of stress-related changes in the hippocampal transcriptome. Supported by an integrated microRNA (miRNA)-mRNA expression analysis, the present study proposes that, when confronted with ongoing stress, neuroprotective mechanisms involving the upregulation of neurogenesis, Wnt signaling and miR-375 can be harnessed more effectively during young-adulthood. Conversely, we suggest that aging alters the pattern of immune activation elicited by stress. Ultimately, interventions that modulate these processes could reduce the burden of stress-related psychopathology in late life.

Global sex differences in obesity rates are persistent, suggesting the involvement of sex steroids. In addition, adipose tissue is a metabolic site for steroidogenesis. Here, we compared female reproductive parameters in a rat model of obesity, with the same parameters in its lean control strain, and tested for an association with integrated measures of corticosterone and testosterone. Steroids were extracted and quantified from 17 Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF; an animal model for obesity) and 13 Long Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO; the lean control strain) hair samples that were collected after weaning offspring. The obese OLETF mothers had higher hair testosterone levels than the control LETO strain. Overall, testosterone, but not corticosterone, predicted litter sex ratios. Younger mothers with large litters and older mothers with small litters tended to have the highest sex ratios (i.e., male-biased litters). In the lean LETO strain, but not in the obese OLETF, maternal testosterone was positively associated with litter size and number of male pups. Corticosterone did not differ between the two strains and was not associated with testosterone or with reproductive parameters. This study suggests that long-term circulating testosterone is associated with female reproduction in multiple ways. The possible trade-off between litter size and sex ratio may be mediated by testosterone and influenced by body fat and composition, which influence the individual's well-being. Exploring the multiple roles of testosterone in females may also help explain the complex relationship between obesity and reproduction.

Effects of prenatal environmental enrichment (EE) were examined in Wistar Kyoto (WKY) "depressive- and anxious-like" rats and Wistar rats. During gestation, dams lived in standard cages or in EE cages. Their behavior during gestation and lactation was observed. On weaning day, they were tested in the forced swimming test, and corticosterone concentration was measured from their plasma. The offspring, reared in standard environment, were tested as juveniles or young adults in the elevated plus maze, open field and forced swimming tests. Corticosterone concentration in feces was analyzed. EE offspring showed more anxiety-like behaviors and less activity, compared to controls. Effects were more prominent in youth than in adulthood and in Wistar rats more than in WKY. EE lowered corticosterone concentration in young WKY rats' feces. EE induced changes in the dams' behavior during gestation and lactation. These changes in dams' behavior could be mediators of the effects on the offspring.

Obese female Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats display increased nursing time and frequency compared to lean LETO controls, suggesting a maternal contribution to pup preobesity. In previous studies, OLETF pups presented high adiposity, showed greater suckling efficiency, initiative and weight gain from nursing than controls throughout lactation. To further elucidate maternal-infant interactions contributing to pup preobesity, we cross-fostered pups a day after birth and examined maternal behavior. Nursing frequency decreased in OLETF dams raising LETO pups (OdLp) in the third postnatal week, while LETO dams raising OLETF pups showed no significant changes. Fat % was greater in the milk of OLETF versus LETO dams. OdLp pups showed long-term body weight (BW) increase, suggesting that maternal environment can induce BW increases even in the absence of a genetic tendency. Additionally, interaction between OLETF dams and pups produces high nursing frequency, exposing the pups to abundant high-fat milk, thus strengthening their preobese phenotype.

Maternal behavior was examined in Flinders Sensitive-Line (FSL) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, two different genetic animal models of depression. Behavioral patterns were assessed by undisturbed observations in the nest [Post-Partum Days (PPD) 4 and 9] and post-disturbance observations ("retrieval tests") on PPD 10. Litters were randomly allocated to a mild chronic-stress condition (limiting available bedding between PPD 2 and 9) or a standard rearing condition. The findings indicated that FSL dams did not differ from control dams in the undisturbed observations. However, in the post-disturbance observations FSL dams exhibited less pup-directed behaviors, a shorter latency to first pup carrying/retrieval and more self-directed behaviors than controls (the latter effect only in dams' interaction with whole litter). In contrast, WKY dams performed more pup-directed activities (e.g., nursing and licking) and less self-directed activities in both the undisturbed and post-disturbance observations (in both dams' interaction with single-pup and with the whole-litter) compared to controls. Accordingly, WKY dams exhibited a shorter latency for first pup-licking bout (in both post-disturbance observations). The early life mild chronic-stress used in the study ('limited-bedding') had a minor effect on the dams' behavior. Overall, the study investigated for the first time the maternal behavior of WKY dams and suggests that these dams show an almost opposite behavioral pattern to that of FSL dams. The results are discussed with regard to earlier findings in the FSL strain and behavioral patterns documented in depressed human mothers.

Ontogenetic trajectories from weaning to adulthood and sex differences in feeding patterns were examined in the Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rat, an animal model of early onset overeating-induced obesity, and a natural cholecystokinin-1 receptor knockout. Overnight patterns of licking a palatable liquid diet (Ensure) were analyzed on Postnatal Days 22, 38, 60, and 90. Because different microstructure profiles may reflect alterations in the influence of positive and negative signals, we examined meal parameters to uncover developing mechanisms underlying eating behavior in this strain. OLETF rats displayed significantly greater caloric intake, larger meals (in number of licks), and more (within-meal) clusters of feeding (which were shorter in duration and contained fewer licks per cluster) than did Long-Evans Tokushima Ohtsuka (LETO) strain controls. OLETF rats also had significantly lower satiety ratios than LETO rats. Moreover, we identified sex differences in the age of emergence of microstructural patterns of obesity-related overeating, suggesting that systems other than cholecystokinin may be disrupted, possibly worsening the OLETF strain's obesity phenotype.

Although the monoamine theory of depression is well studied, regarding childhood depression it is poorly supported. Antidepressant treatments affecting the monoaminergic system fail to ameliorate childhood depression in the same manner that they affect adult depression. The present study used the Flinders sensitive line (FSL) rat, a well-investigated genetic animal model of depression and Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats as controls. We co-measured monoamines and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) levels in the nucleus accumbens on postnatal day 1, in prepubertal rats (35 days), and adult rats (4 months) in order to examine developmental characteristics in the monoamine systems. The results suggest that there are different ontogenetic patterns of monoaminergic activity in FSL and SD rats. While monoamine levels were different only in adulthood, FSL rats exhibited lower DHEA levels already in prepubertal childhood. These differences may be relevant to the poor response to antidepressant drugs observed in depressed children and suggest DHEA as a new marker for childhood depression.

Flinders sensitive line (FSL) rats, an animal model of depression, display a different pattern of maternal behavior compared to Sprague-Dawley (SD) controls. In this study, we examined the rewarding value of mother-infant interaction for FSL dams.In the main study, we measured monoamine levels in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of early postpartum FSL and SD dams during an interaction with pups, using the microdialysis technique. In addition, we compared the preference patterns of FSL and SD rats using the conditioned place preference paradigm, with pups as the unconditioned stimuli.Dopamine (DA) levels in dialysates from the NAc of SD dams but not FSL dams were elevated while interacting with pups but the metabolism of DA to dihydroxyphenylacetic acid was greater in FSL than in SD dams. While SD dams showed a conditioned preference for a region that was associated with SD pups, FSL dams did not show a preference for regions associated either with SD or FSL pups, but water deprived FSL rats demonstrated a preference to a region associated with water, eliminating an alternative explanation of learning deficit in FSL rats.Taken together, these results suggest that FSL dams are less rewarded by pups, compared to control dams.

Controls of the independent ingestion of food in the preweanling rat emerge in the second postnatal week. We investigated the effects of CCK-8 (0, 1, 5, or 10 microg/kg IP) on intake and c-Fos-like immunoreactive (CFLI) cells in hindbrain and forebrain on postnatal days 10 and 11. Five micrograms per kilogram decreased intake and increased the number of CFLI cells in four subnuclei of the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), in arcuate nucleus (ARC), and in central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA). Ten micrograms per kilogram decreased intake and increased CFLI in three NTS subnuclei as much as 5 microg/kg did, but was more potent than 5 microg/kg in the medial NTS subnucleus. Ten micrograms per kilogram increased CFLI in paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei, but 5 microg/kg did not. Thus, reduction of intake by CCK-8 on days 10 and 11 is associated with increased hindbrain and forebrain CFLI.

The OLETF rat model of obesity has been extensively studied as an adult model of hyperphagia-induced obesity. In order to better understand the early circumstances that make OLETF pups obese, we investigated body weight from postnatal day (PND) 1 and examined diurnal maternal behavior over the first three postpartum weeks by undisturbed observations. Male and female OLETF rats weighed significantly more than LETO controls from PND 1 until adulthood. Differences in nursing behavior were observed only in the third postnatal week: OLETF dams exhibited more frequent nursing. OLETF dams displayed less self-directed behaviors and activity, over the entire postpartum period examined. Taken together, these data demonstrate that OLETF males and females are heavier from birth and suggest that maternal factors may contribute to weight differences between the strains.

CCK involvement in stress- and pain-responsiveness was examined by studying the beha- vior of infant (11-12-days-old) and adult OLETF rats that do not express CCK1 receptors. Infant odor- and texture-preferences were also assessed. We hypothesized that OLETF rats will show behavioral patterns similar to those previously observed after CCK1 antagonist administration. Rate of separation-induced ultrasonic vocalization was significantly greater in OLETF compared to controls, in two separate studies. Infant pups of the two strains did not differ in odor- and texture-preference tests. OLETF rats showed consistently longer hot- plate paw-lift (as infants, in two separate studies) and paw-lick (as adults) latencies. Summary: OLETF pups vocalized in isolation more than controls and showed relative hypoalgesic responses, evident also in adulthood, in concordance with the pharmacological literature.

Background In an attempt to model childhood depression, we examined whether existing genetic animal models of depression in adult rats are also valid in prepubertal rats. Methods Two different "depressed" rat lines were studied: the Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) and their controls, Sprague-Dawley (SD); and the Wistar Kyoto (WKY) line and their controls, Wistar. We hypothesized that male prepubertal FSL and WKY rats would show increased swim test immobility and different patterns of social play and of basal plasma levels of corticosterone and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) compared with control rats. Results Prepubertal FSL and WKY rats exhibited significantly longer duration of immobility than control rats in the swim test. The FSL rats demonstrated significantly higher levels of social play behaviors and lower levels of corticosterone and ACTH compared with SD control rats, whereas WKY rats demonstrated significantly lower levels of social play behaviors and higher plasma levels of corticosterone and ACTH compared with Wistar control rats. Conclusions The results might suggest that prepubertal FSL and WKY rats are both putative genetic animal models of childhood depression, exhibiting separate patterns and symptoms of childhood depression.

One of the most important criteria for major depressive disorder in adults and in children and adolescents as well, is the loss of interest in or pleasure from typically enjoyable experiences or activities: anhedonia. Anxiety is frequently co-morbid with depression. We examined reward and anxiety in genetic animal models of childhood depression. Two different “depressed” lines were studied: the Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) and their controls, Sprague–Dawley (SD) rats and the Wistar Kyoto (WKY) line and their controls, Wistar rats. Recently, we found that prepubertal rats (about 35 days old) from these lines exhibited increased immobility in the swim test, and abnormal social play observed after 24-h isolation. We hypothesized that FSL and WKY prepubertal rats will further show anhedonia in two different behavioral assays: the conditioned place preference test (CPP), examining the rewarding aspect of social interaction and the saccharin preference test. Behavior in the open field paradigm and freezing behavior in the CPP apparatus were also used as measures of anxiety. WKY, but not FSL prepubertal rats, consumed less of the saccharin solution compared to their control line. FSL, and WKY prepubertal rats found social interaction to be rewarding to a similar extent as their control lines, in the CPP test. Only the WKY rats showed anxiety in behavior in the open field and freezing behavior in the CPP paradigm. The results suggest that WKY prepubertal rats are anxious and sensitive to stress-induced anhedonia, while FSL prepubertal rats exhibit none of these symptoms.

In order to elucidate the relationship between maternal behavior and depression, the Flinders sensitive line (FSL) model of depression was studied and compared to Sprague-Dawley (SD) controls. Immobility in the swim test was measured, as an index for depressive-like behavior, and frequencies of maternal and non-maternal behaviors were recorded using short un-intrusive observations in the home cage. Lactating FSL rats displayed higher levels of immobility in the swim test compared to controls, indicating depressive-like behavior. In addition, compared to SD rats, FSL dams showed less frequent pup licking and non-nutritive contact with pups during the first and third weeks of lactation. In the third postpartum week, FSL dams showed less frequent nursing postures and more frequent self-directed behaviors. Thus, lactating FSL dams exhibit both depressed-like behavior and some abnormalities in maternal behavior.

The number, amplitude, duration, and bout structure of isolation-induced ultrasonic vocalization (USV) of infant rats (Rattus norvegicus) were measured on postnatal Day 10. Measurements were made before and after a brief, 1-min, active interaction with their mother or before and after a "pick-up" control procedure. Consistent with prior studies, the number of USVs emitted was significantly increased in the period following the maternal reunion but not after the control procedure. The average amplitude of USVs was also greater following maternal reunion. Finally, analyses characterizing the bout structure of USV production indicated that the average bout size (i.e. number of USVs/bout) was increased severalfold following the reunion with the mother, accounting for the greater rate of USV production during the second isolation period.

Mild maternal hypothyroidism during pregnancy can adversely affect infant development. We studied thyrotropin (TSH) levels in mothers of premature and low-birth-weight infants in Colombia, where iodized salt supplements the diet to correct iodine deficiency. The additional impact of salt restriction in mothers with hypertensive disorders was examined. Blood was spotted on filter paper from 404 mothers and their infants. Using radioimmunoassay (RIA), TSH was measured in the mothers, and TSH and thyroxine in their infants at three postpartum times. Initially, mothers had high TSH levels (i.e., TSH10 mU/L in half the mothers at the first assessment). Fourteen days later, only 9.3%, and at calculated term 7.5% were greater than 10 mU/L. Maternal TSH levels correlated with infant birth weight and gestational age (r = 0.47, and r = 0.49, p0.01). Initial TSH values were higher in salt restricted (20.1 +/- 2 mU/L, n = 76) versus control mothers (14.6 +/- 0.85, n = 328, p0.01), dropping dramatically in both groups 14 days later (to 3.4 +/- 0.7 mU/L vs. 2.8 +/- 0.4 mU/L) and at calculated term (2.8 +/- 0.4 mU/L vs. 2.3 +/- 0.6 mU/L). Increased maternal TSH levels during pregnancy in an iodine-deficient area may be aggravated by salt restriction. Monitoring TSH and supplementing iodine or thyroxine are recommended in pregnancy, especially if dietary salt restriction is prescribed.

Objectives: It is evident that sleep patterns have direct effects on fatigue. However, the multidimensionality of fatigue may imply that complex patterns of relationships exist between fatigue and sleep characteristics. We aimed to study the correlations between fatigue and quantitative and qualitative sleep measurements, while taking into consideration depression and somatization which are known to affect both sleep and fatigue. We predicted that sleep quality, unattained by the effects of somatization and depression, would affect perceived fatigue more than the quantitative characteristics of sleep. Design: Employing a cross-sectional design, hypotheses were addressed using multiple hierarchical regression analyses according to established methods. Methods: Data were gathered from a targeted, randomly selected adult sample (N = 278) by means of subjective sleep reports, a mental health inventory, somatization inventory, several fatigue questionnaires and a demographic questionnaire. Results: Fatigue was significantly predicted by depression scores, somatization levels and subjective sleep quality, but not quantitative sleep characteristics such as sleep latency, nocturnal awakenings and early morning arousals. Depression levels were positively and significantly related to all aspects of fatigue except physical fatigue and fatigue that responds to rest and sleep. Physical fatigue was correlated with somatization, but not depression. Conclusions: The data further our understanding of the multifaceted nature of human fatigue and underline the greater importance of perceived sleep quality, compared to other sleep characteristics, in predicting fatigue.

The influence of the pre- and postweaning maternal environment on the offspring's phenotype was examined in 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptor knockout mice (KO1A and KO1B, respectively). We have previously shown that, when born to and raised by homozygous dams of the same genotype, adult KO1A are more anxious than wild-type (WT) mice, and adult KO1B are hyperactive and slightly less anxious than WT mice. We extend our studies here to the behavioral results of the offspring's own genotype, when the dam's genotype is constant, and the effects of the dam's genotype when the offspring's genotype is constant. In Experiments 1 and 2, KO1A-/- pups produced less ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) than controls in an isolation test on postnatal Day 7 when born to and reared by KO1A dams, either -/- or +/-. Heterozygous F1 pups reared by KO1A-/- dams produced more USV and were less anxious in the plus-maze at 2 to 3 months of age than F1 pups born to and reared by WT dams (Experiment 3). F1 pups reared by KO1B-/- dams produced less USV and were more anxious in the plus-maze than F1 pups reared by WT dams (Experiment 4). The results support a role for maternal effects that may comprise direct effects such as the dam's behavior and nutritional care of the pup, and possibly more complex indirect effects through the establishment of idiosyncratic dam-pup dyadic interactions. We recommend that breeding techniques that rely on same genotype (mutant-mutant or WT-WT) breeding pairs not be used to generate offspring when the focus of research is the study of gene function, but rather when familial effects need to be studied.

The provision of maternal-infant body contact during a period of maternal separation was examined for its effects on parent-infant and triadic interactions. Participants were 146 three-month-old preterm infants and their parents, half of whom received skin-to-skin contact, or kangaroo care (KC), in the neonatal nursery. Global relational style and micro-patterns of proximity and touch were coded. Following KC, mothers and fathers were more sensitive and less intrusive, infants showed less negative affect, and family style was more cohesive. Among KC families, maternal and paternal affectionate touch of infant and spouse was more frequent, spouses remained in closer proximity, and infant proximity position was conducive to mutual gaze and touch during triadic play. The role of touch as a constituent of the co-regulatory parent-infant and triadic systems and the effects of maternal contact on mothering, co-parenting, and family processes are discussed.

Objective. To examine whether the kangaroo care (KC) intervention in premature infants affects parent–child interactions and infant development.Methods. Seventy-three preterm infants who received KC in the neonatal intensive care unit were matched with 73 control infants who received standard incubator care for birth weight, gestational age (GA), medical severity, and demographics. At 37 weeks’ GA, mother–infant interaction, maternal depression, and mother perceptions were examined. At 3 months’ corrected age, infant temperament, maternal and paternal sensitivity, and the home environment (with the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment [HOME]) were observed. At 6 months’ corrected age, cognitive development was measured with the Bayley-II and mother–infant interaction was filmed. Seven clusters of outcomes were examined at 3 time periods: at 37 weeks’ GA, mother–infant interaction and maternal perceptions; at 3-month, HOME mothers, HOME fathers, and infant temperament; at 6 months, cognitive development and mother–infant interactionResults. After KC, interactions were more positive at 37 weeks’ GA: mothers showed more positive affect, touch, and adaptation to infant cues, and infants showed more alertness and less gaze aversion. Mothers reported less depression and perceived infants as less abnormal. At 3 months, mothers and fathers of KC infants were more sensitive and provided a better home environment. At 6 months, KC mothers were more sensitive and infants scored higher on the Bayley Mental Developmental Index (KC: mean: 96.39; controls: mean: 91.81) and the Psychomotor Developmental Index (KC: mean: 85.47; controls: mean: 80.53).Conclusions. KC had a significant positive impact on the infant’s perceptual-cognitive and motor development and on the parenting process. We speculate that KC has both a direct impact on infant development by contributing to neurophysiological organization and an indirect effect by improving parental mood, perceptions, and interactive behavior.

Menstrual synchrony has been measured by a change over time, to capture the “process” of synchronization or by examining a sample of women who have been together for a number of months (“state” synchrony). We have proposed and used a method for calculating “state” synchrony. On the basis of the results of a computer simulation, Schank (Schank, J.C., 2000. Menstrual-cycle variability and measurement: further cause for doubt. Psychoneuroendocrinology 25, 837–847) argues that our method is biased towards finding synchrony and that the degree of error is an increasing function of cycle variability. We show that Schank’s model is based on unfounded assumptions. Contrary to Schank’s assertion, on which much of the critique is based, there is no evidence that cycle variability is actually large in samples with “state” synchrony. Our reports are valid; and our method is supported both by convergent validity and by the use of statistical “random control” groups.

Objective: To assess whether complete kangaroo mother care (KMC), a skin-to-skin contact intervention, would affect longitudinal/developmental patterns of hormonal change. Method: An open randomized controlled trial was conducted in a large tertiary care hospital, comparing KMC and traditional care for newborn infants weighing less than 2,001 g. Eighty-seven healthy preterm (4) were assessed by radioimmunoassay. Birth weight (Interventions: Complete KMC includes early discharge, positioning the infant on the parent’s chest in an upright position, 24 h/day in skin-to-skin contact, and breast-feeding. In the traditional care group, infants were discharged according to routine hospital practice. Results: Levels of 17-OHP and TSH decreased significantly from eligibility to calculated term while T4 levels did not change significantly over time. Most importantly, overall, treatment (KMC) did not interact with the pattern of physiological change. Conclusions: Maturation of the pituitary-thyroid axis and adrenal function is apparently not compromised by KMC, at least in healthy preterm infants.

The effect of mother-infant skin-to-skin contact (kangaroo care, or KC) on self-regulatory processes of premature infants was studied. Seventy-three infants who received KC were compared with 73 infants matched for birth weight, gestational age, medical risk, and family demographics. State organization was measured in 10-s epochs over 4 hr before KC and again at term. No differences between KC infants and controls were found before KC. At term, KC infants showed more mature state distribution and more organized sleep-wake cyclicity. At 3 months, KC infants had higher thresholds to negative emotionality and more efficient arousal modulation while attending to increasingly complex stimuli. At 6 months, longer duration of and shorter latencies to mother-infant shared attention and infant sustained exploration in a toy session were found for KC infants. The results underscore the importance of maternal body contact for infants' physiological, emotional, and cognitive regulatory capacities.

The role of Cholecystokinin (CCK), a gut hormone and neuropeptide, in early learning was examined. Pairing a novel odor (presented away from the nest) with exogenously administered CCK (0.250.5 microg/kg IP) has been shown to produce a conditioned-odor preference in infant rats (Weller, A.; Blass, E.M. Behav. Neurosci. 104:199-206; 1990). This suggests that CCK can act as a positive unconditioned stimulus (UCS). In the present study the possibility that CCK mediates learning was examined in 12-day-old rats, using rewards that represent aspects of the dam and the nest. In Experiments 1 and 2, pups received the selective CCK1 receptor antagonist devazepide (600 microg/kg), the selective CCK2 receptor antagonist L365,260 (600 microg/kg), or vehicle. In a series of training trials, choosing a particular floor texture was rewarded by 20 sec. on a rug texture (experiment 1) or with maternal (feces) odor (experiment 2). In experiment 3, after administering devazepide (0, 600, or 1000 microg/kg) a novel odor was paired once with reunion of the pup with its dam. The dependent measure in all studies was the pup's relative preference toward the (tactile or olfactory) conditioned stimulus (CS), determined in preference tests. Conditioned preferences were evident in all experiments. The CCK receptor antagonists did not increase conditioned preference levels. L365, 260 (experiment 2) and devazepide (experiment 1) clearly blocked the appearance of the conditioned effect in one of the experiments. In addition, devazepide treatment eliminated the conditioned effect in the two other experiments, by increasing preference levels in the control groups. In summary, the results suggest that endogenous CCK mediates some aspects of the infant's acquisition of new associations. The role of the two receptor-subtypes appears to be different, depending on the context and the nature of the rewarding stimulus.

To determine if preloads of glucose act preabsorptively or postabsorptively to inhibit intake, 18-day-old rat pups were deprived for 24 h and then provided with sweet milk during a 30-min independent ingestion test. Five minutes before the test, gastric preloads (5% body weight, BW) or intraperitoneal injections (4 ml/kg BW) of isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic solutions of glucose or 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) were administered. There were two major results: First, preloads of 20% glucose decreased intake much more than intraperitoneal injections of 20% glucose. Second, a preload of 20% 2-DG, which decreases, rather than increases glucose utilization, was as effective as a preload of 20% glucose in decreasing intake. These results are consistent with a preabsorptive osmotic mechanism, but not with a postabsorptive metabolic mechanism, for mediating most, if not all, of the inhibition of intake 5 min after preloads of 20% glucose in rats on postnatal day 18 (P18).

The ontogenetic development of postingestive inhibitory control of ingestion by the osmotic load of a preload was examined in rats. On postnatal days 6 (P6) and 12 (P12), pups were deprived for either 6 or 24 h. Gastric preloads (5% body wt) of water, mannitol (a sugar alcohol that is not absorbed) in six concentrations [from 0.125 M (hypotonic) to 1.0 M (hypertonic)], or sham preloads were administered 5 min before a 30-min intake test. Compared with sham treatment, isotonic mannitol (0.25 M), a probe of volumetric control, significantly reduced intake on P12, but not on P6. Compared with isotonic mannitol, the three highest hypertonic concentrations (0.5, 0.66, and 1.0 M) significantly decreased intake on P12, at both levels of deprivation. On P6, 0.66 and 1.0 M mannitol reduced intake after 24 h, but not after 6 h, of deprivation. Thus, on P6, the hypertonic control was detectable only after prolonged deprivation and the volumetric control was not present. On P12, both controls were observed and the hypertonic control was more potent than on P6.

To assess subjective and objective definitions of menstrual regularity, and the relationship between them, 114 university students (mean age 20.3 years) prospectively recorded eight consecutive menstrual dates and reported whether they considered themselves 'regular' or 'irregular'. The percentage of women who reported being menstrually 'regular' or menstrually 'irregular' was compared with a classification developed according to a criterion based upon the results of their prospective menstrual records. According to self-reports and objective measures of regularity, a similar portion of the women (about 70%) were regular. But when cross-classifying regularity and non-regularity by the two procedures, it was found that only 44% of those who defined themselves as irregular were likewise defined by the objective criteria, whereas 82% of the women who defined themselves as regular were also deemed so by the objective criteria. It is concluded that some women will, and others will not, construe 'variability' as 'irregularity'.

Depression amongst immigrant students from the former Soviet Union was assessed as an index of the stage of their acculturation into the new host society, Israel. At the beginning of the first year of nursing school, three groups completed the Beck Depression Inventory. The two groups of immigrants: immigrant nurses preparing for licensing ( N = 26) and immigrant students ( N = 16), reported mild levels of depression, while Israeli students ( N = 33) were significantly less depressed, within the normal range. Six months later, both immigrant groups were within the normal range, the immigrant nurses group showing the greatest decrease in depression. This change may be explained by adaptation to the educational setting, mastering the host society's language and social anchorage. The importance of background variables for predicting depression reduction is examined. The findings are discussed within the framework of multistage models of acculturation and the implications for counseling immigrant students are presented.

The ontogenetic development of postingestive inhibitory control of ingestion by an oil preload was examined in preweanling rats. Gastric preloads (5% b.wt.) of water, mineral oil or corn oil were administered 5 min before a 30-min intake test in which pups licked milk from the floor of a test chamber. Preloads of corn oil decreased intake significantly compared with preloads of mineral oil or water on Postnatal Days 15 and 18, but not on Postnatal Day 12. Because preloads of corn oil reduced intake more than preloads of mineral oil, it is probable that the inhibitory effect of corn oil is due to its fats rather than to its oily texture. Cholecystokinin (CCK), presumably released from the small intestine, apparently mediates part of this inhibitory effect because pretreatment with devazepide, a specific CCKA antagonist, significantly reduced the inhibition produced by corn oil.

Early signs of aggressive behavior toward an intruder were examined in Sprague-Dawley rats. The interactions between groups of four 24-day-old pups (2 males, 2 females) and an unfamiliar male pup from another litter were observed. Some patterns of social play were asymmetric. Compared to the playmate from the group, the unfamiliar pup was most likely to be underneath the other rats, either during play fighting or by crawling under a playmate. The single pup was most frequently involved in the following behaviors: on top (One animal climbs on top of another animal placing its forepaws on the second animal.), grooming, or crawling under a playmate. The effects of relative birth weight, ambient temperature during the lactation period, relative body weight, and relative body temperature during the observation period were studied. Results show that pups born and raised in a warm environment interacted socially more than pups raised in a colder environment. Pups lighter than the mean body weight of playmates tended to use submissive behaviors more than relatively heavier pups. Relatively heavy pups tended to use play behaviors that might be considered more aggressive during the interaction. The results suggest that under appropriate conditions, early evidence for dominance, i.e., asymmetry can be revealed.

The dramatic increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity worldwide makes the investigation of its early developmental stages and effective prevention strategies an urgent issue. CCK1 deficient OLETF rats are a model of obesity previously used to study the early phases of this disorder. Here, we exposed wild type (LETO) females to an early obesogenic environment and genetically obese OLETF females to a lean postnatal environment, to assess long term alterations in leptin sensitivity, predisposition to diet induced obesity and adult female health. We found that genetically lean females reared by obese mothers presented early postnatal hyperleptemia, selectively reduced response to leptin and sensitivity to diet induced obesity when exposed to a high palatable diet as adults. The estrous cycle structure and intake profile were permanently disrupted, despite presenting normal adiposity/body weight/food intake. Genetically obese females reared by lean dams showed normalized early levels of leptin and reduced body weight, food intake and body fat at adulthood; normalized estrous cycle structure and food intake across the cycle, improved hormonal profile and peripheral leptin sensitivity and a remarkable progress in self-control when exposed to a high fat/palatable diet. Altogether, it appears that the early postnatal environment plays a critical role in determining later life coping with metabolic challenges and has an additive effect on the genetic predisposition that makes OLETF females morbidly obese as adults. This work also links, for the first time, alterations in the leptin system during early development to later life abnormalities related to female reproduction and health.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact on neonatal neurobehavioral development of methimazole (MMI)-induced in-utero hypothyroxinemia and of correction by maternal-fetal thyroxine (T 4 ) transfer in the rat. Two groups of pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats received MMI as drinking water from gestation day 10 until birth. From day 16 until parturition, one of these groups received daily intraperitoneal injections of L-T 4 and the other received saline injections. A third (control) group drank tap water and received saline injections. From day of birth, offspring from all groups were raised by untreated foster dams. Their neurobehavioral development was monitored, on postnatal days 5–14 ( N = 3/ litter , from 30 litters) by experimenters blind to treatment group. Prenatal T 4 treatment resulted in correction of MMI-induced delayed appearance of three different reflexes. Body-weight gain of treated pups was similar to that of controls and more rapid than development of rats treated with MMI-alone. T 4 treatment did not prevent, however, MMI-induced delay in maturation of physiological landmarks (e.g. ear opening). At least a portion of the developmental delay resulting from prenatal (maternal) MMI administration may be reversed by maternal-fetal transfer of T 4 administered to the gravid dam.

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlations between retrospective and prospective assessments of sleep. Subjective reports of sleep characteristics and sleep quality were obtained from 146 young (20–40 years, average age 29.15) healthy men ( n = 43), nonpregnant ( n = 70) and pregnant women ( n = 33). Three types of subjective sleep reports were obtained: (1) general estimates of sleep habits (retrospective measures); (2) sleep logs completed upon awakening on three successive workdays (prospective measures); and (3) general sleep complaints. Men showed the greatest stability in the sleep log reports, followed by nonpregnant women, with pregnant women showing the least stability. Significant positive correlations between prospective (log reported) and retrospective (general estimates) sleep measures were found only for men. However, for measures of sleep quality, such as feelings of fatigue upon awakening, women showed greater agreement between their general estimates and three nightly reports. The limitations of using retrospective estimates in sleep surveys are discussed.

This study examined menstrual synchrony among roommates residing in 20 university housing units. Menstrual synchrony was examined for roommates who were close friends and roommates who were not close friends, and by housing unit. The impact of personality, social-interaction and menstrual-related factors was also studied. To avoid limitations found in previous studies, (i) data were collected prospectively and (ii) over the entire academic year; (iii) high participation rate was obtained (86%); and (iv) women who used oral contraceptives were excluded. Menstrual synchrony was found among roommates who were close friends. Synchrony was not found for roommates who were not close friends, nor by housing units. The phenomenon of menstrual synchrony may more likely occur among close friends and women with intensive social contact than under the conditions common to university dormitories.

Although the placenta is only a limited barrier for the transfer of thyroxine (T4) to the fetus, we have recently demonstrated that maternal T4 does not suffice to prevent the effects of in uterohypothyroidism. The current study presents a convenient and minimally invasive animal model to study whether maternal-fetal transfer of T4 administered to the pregnant rat corrects the newborn's in uterohypothyroidism. In this model pregnant rats receive the goitrogen methimazole in their drinking water from d 10 of gestation until birth, either alone or together with L-T4. Circulating T4 levels in the dams and newborn pups are measured from blood spotted on filter paper by RIA. Using blood T4 levels as the measure, in the present study we found similar effects for orally and intraperitoneally administered T4. This rat model will allow future studies of whether maternal-fetal T4 transfer can correct the detrimental neurobehavioral effects of intrauterine hypothyroidism.

The two objectives of this study were: (1) to examine the impact of social interaction variables (e.g., friendship, time working together, and activity) on the occurrence of menstrual synchrony; (2) to examine the menstrual synchrony of women who work together in an office. The sample consisted of 72 women soldiers in two army bases, and a civilian sample of 36 office workers. None of the samples showed significant synchrony. However, social interaction variables were found to be important factors contributing to the relative degree of synchrony. Friendship, mutual activity, and length of time working together were significantly related to the degree of synchrony.

Based on the hypothesis that olfactory communication may underlie menstrual synchrony, we examined menstrual synchrony among eight professional basketball teams in the Israeli womens' major basketball league. We investigated whether team synchrony occurred, whether best friends among the teammates synchronized, and whether menstrual-related or social-interaction factors were associated with synchrony. Synchrony was not found among the teams nor among best friends. No meaningful relation was found between synchrony and menstrual-related or social-interaction variables.

Maternal care is the newborn's first experience of social interaction, and this influences infant survival, development and social competences throughout life. We recently found that postpartum blocking of the endocannabinoid receptor-1 (CB1R) altered maternal behaviour. In the present study, maternal care was assessed by the time taken to retrieve pups, pups' ultrasonic vocalisations (USVs) and pup body weight, comparing CB1R deleted (CB1R KO) versus wild-type (WT) mice. After culling on postpartum day 8, hippocampal expression of oxytocin receptor (OXTR), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and stress-mediating factors were evaluated in CB1R KO and WT dams. Comparisons were also performed with nulliparous (NP) CB1R KO and WT mice. Compared to WT, CB1R KO dams were slower to retrieve their pups. Although the body weight of the KO pups did not differ from the weight of WT pups, they emitted fewer USVs. This impairment of the dam-pup relationship correlated with a significant reduction of OXTR mRNA and protein levels among CB1R KO dams compared to WT dams. Furthermore, WT dams exhibited elevated OXTR mRNA expression, as well as increased levels of mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors, compared to WT NP mice. By contrast, CB1R KO dams showed no such elevation of OXTR expression, alongside lower BDNF and mineralocorticoid receptors, as well as elevated corticotrophin-releasing hormone mRNA levels, when compared to CB1R KO NP. Thus, it appears that the disruption of endocannabinoid signalling by CB1R deletion alters expression of the OXTR, apparently leading to deleterious effects upon maternal behaviour.
