A centipede like thiocyanate-bridged multi-nuclear copper(I/II) complex, [Cu
2 L(CH3 OH)(NCS)3 ]n , derived from 2-(((2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)imino)methyl)-5-fluorophenol (HL), was prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV–vis spectra, as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Cu1 ion in the +2 oxidation state is coordinated by the tridentate Schiff base ligand in a square pyramidal geometry, with the other two sites occupied by one N atom of the thiocyanate ligand and one methanol O atom. The Cu2 ion in the +1 oxidation state is coordinated by one N and three S atoms from four thiocyanate ligands, forming a tetrahedral geometry. The CuI ions are linked by thiocyanate ligands to form a one-dimensional chain with [CuI 2 (μ1,3,3 -NCS)2 ] as the repeat unit. The [CuII L(CH3 OH)] moieties are linked to the chain through thiocyanate ligands. The complex has remarkable inhibitory activity on Jack bean urease with an IC50 value of 1.3 μmol L–1 . Two new oxovanadium(V) complexes, [VOL(mat)] (1) and [VOL(Et‐mat)] (2) (mat = maltolate, Et‐mat = ethyl maltolate), where L is the dianionic form of N′‐(3‐ethoxy‐2‐hydroxybenzylidene)‐3‐hydroxy‐4‐methoxybenzohydrazide (H2L), were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV/Vis, and 1H NMR spectra. The structures of the compounds were further confirmed by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. The hydrazone ligand coordinates to the V atoms through the phenolate oxygen, imino nitrogen, and enolate oxygen. The maltolate and ethyl maltolate ligands coordinated to the V atoms through the carbonyl oxygen and deprotonated hydroxyl oxygen. The V atom in each complex is in octahedral coordination. The complexes were administered intragastrically to both normal and alloxan‐diabetic mice for two weeks. The biological activity results show that the complexes at doses of 10.0 and 20.0 mg V·kg–1, can significantly decrease the blood glucose level in alloxan‐diabetic mice, but the blood glucose level in the treated normal mice was not altered. A series of copper(II) complexes, [CuCl 2 (HL 1 )]·CH 3 OH ( 1 ), [CuL 2 (ONO 2 )] ( 2 ), [CuBrL 2 ] ( 3 ) and [CuL 3 (NCS)(CH 3 OH)] ( 4 ) were prepared from 3,5-dihydroxy- N ′-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)benzohydrazide (HL 1 ), 2-hydroxy- N ′-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)benzohydrazide (HL 2 ) and 4-methoxy- N ′-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)benzohydrazide (HL 3 ). The compounds were characterized by physico-chemical methods. Structures of HL 1 and the complexes were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The metal atoms in complexes 1 and 4 display square pyramidal coordination, in complexes 2 and 3 display square planar coordination. The inhibitory effects of the compounds on Jack bean urease were evaluated. The results showed that the hydrazone HL 1 and complexes 1 and 4 have significant urease inhibitory activities, with IC 50 values of 8.2 ± 1.5, 6.3 ± 1.7, and 3.1 ± 1.2 μmol·L −1 , respectively. Complexes 2 and 3 show medium urease inhibitory activities, with IC 50 values of 35.7 ± 3.1, and 41.5 ± 2.7 μmol·L −1 , respectively. Molecular docking study of the compounds with Jack bean urease was performed to study the probable binding modes. The compounds with effective urease inhibitory activities anchor well in the active center of the urease and extend to the entrance of the binding pocket by interacting with its key amino acid residues. The results endorse that the hydrazone compound HL 1 and complexes 1 and 4 may serve as structural templates for the design and development of novel urease inhibitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cubane-type structure is a typical representative of tetranuclear coordination compounds. In this work, two anionic Schiff-base ligands, (L
1 )2− and (L2 )2− , each offering an O^N^O coordination pocket, ligate four NiII ions into a [Ni4 O4 ] cubane core. The ligands are H2 L1 = 2−[[(3-ethoxy-2−hydroxyphenyl) methylene]amino]benzenemethanol and H2 L2 = 2−[[(5-fluoro-2−hydroxyphenyl)methylene]amino]benzenemethanol. In both compounds, [Ni4 (L1 )4 (EtOH)4 ] (1) and [Ni4 (L2 )4 (MeOH)4 ] (2), alkoxy oxygens of the ligands act in a bridging μ3 -O binding mode. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization data for compounds 1 and 2 are presented. The Ni–O–Ni bond angles of the cubane core determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data play a key role for a magneto-structural correlation. Dominant intracube ferromagnetic behavior is observed, and the coupling parameters were determined for both compounds, leading to nonzero spin ground states in accordance with the broadly accepted bond angle guideline. [Display omitted] • A new Schiff base was prepared. • Four new Ni-Ni and Ni-Ln complexes were prepared. • The Schiff base the complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. • The complexes have effective antimicrobial activities. Molecular nanoclusters comprising a heterometallic 3 d -4 f stoichiometry are an interesting class of compounds. In this paper, a chloro-containing Schiff base 4-chloro-2-(2-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzylideneamino)phenol (H 2 L) was prepared by condensation reaction of 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde with 2-amino-4-chlorophenol in methanol. The Schiff base is predisposed to chelate within a cluster core both 3 d and 4 f metal ions. Reaction of H 2 L with nickel salts afforded a tetranuclear NiII complex [Ni 4 L 4 (MeOH) 4 ] (1), while with nickel salts and lanthanide(III) nitrate three tetranuclear NiII-LnIII complexes [Ni 2 Eu 2 L 4 (NO 3) 2 (DMF) 2 ] (2), [Ni 2 Er 2 L 4 (NO 3) 2 (DMF) 2 ] (3), [Ni 2 Tb 2 L 4 (CH 3 COO) 2 (DMF) 2 ]·4DMF (4) were obtained. H 2 L and the complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–Vis spectra. H 2 L has also been characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Molecular structures of the compounds have been determined by single crystal X-ray determination. In the complexes, the Schiff base ligands coordinate to the metal atoms via ether oxygen, imino nitrogen and two phenolate oxygen atoms. All the Ni atoms in the complexes are in octahedral coordination. The rare earth metal atoms are eight coordinated by the phenolate and ether oxygen of the Schiff base ligands, and anionic and solvent oxygen atoms, forming square antiprismatic coordination. Two new maltolate- and ethylmaltolate-coordinated oxidovanadium(V) complexes with aroylhydrazone ligand were prepared. The aroylhydrazone and the complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–Vis and NMR spectra. Single crystal structures of the aroylhydrazone and the complexes have been determined. The complexes have effective insulin-like activity on alloxan-diabetic mice. Two new oxidovanadium(V) complexes, [VOLL1] and [VOLL2], where L is the dianionic form of N ′-(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-3-methylbenzohydrazide (H 2 L), L1 is maltolatel, and L2 is ethylmaltolate, have been prepared. Both H 2 L and the complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–Vis and NMR spectra. The structures of the compounds were further confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The aroylhydrazone ligand coordinates to the V atoms through the phenolate oxygen, imino nitrogen and enolate oxygen. The maltolate and ethylmaltolate ligands coordinated to the V atoms through the carbonyl oxygen and deprotonated hydroxyl oxygen. The V atom in each complex is in octahedral coordination. The complexes were administered intragastrically to both normal and alloxan-diabetic mice. The biological activity results show that the complexes at doses of 10.0 and 20.0 mg V·kg−1, can significantly decrease the blood glucose level in alloxan-diabetic mice, but the blood glucose level in the treated normal mice was not altered. The complexes were characterized by infrared and UV–Vis spectra and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Cu atoms in complexes 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 are coordinated by the NOO donor set of the aroylhydrazone ligands, and one Cl or thiocyanate N atom, forming square planar coordination. The Cu atom in complex 6 is in a square pyramidal coordination, with the NOO donor set of L 1 , and one N atom of bipy defining the basal plane, and with the other N atom of bipy occupying the apical position. Complexes 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 and 5 show effective urease inhibitory activities, with IC 50 values of 5.14, 0.20, 4.06, 5.52 and 0.26 μM, respectively. Complex 6 has very weak activity against urease, with IC 50 value over 100 μM. Molecular docking study of the complexes with the Helicobacter pylori urease was performed. The relationship between structures and urease inhibitory activities indicated that copper complexes with square planar coordination are better models for urease inhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three new oxidovanadium(V) complexes with formula [VOLL′] (L = L 1 = N ′-(2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-hydroxybenzohydrazide for 1 , L = L 2 = N ′-(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)pivalohydrazide for 2 , L = L 3 = 2-bromo- N ′-(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide for 3 , L′ = ethylmaltol), have been prepared. The complexes have been characterized by physico-chemical methods and single crystal X-ray determination. The V atom in each complex is coordinated by the NOO donor atoms of L, the OO donor atoms of L′, and one oxido group, forming octahedral coordination. The complexes were administered intragastrically to both normal and alloxan-diabetic mices for two weeks. The biological activity results show that the complexes at doses of 10.0 and 20.0 mg V·kg −1 , can significantly decrease the blood glucose level in alloxan-diabetic mices, but the blood glucose level in the treated normal mices was not altered. Three new mononuclear copper(II) complexes, [CuL 1 (N 3 )] ( 1 ), [CuL 1 (NCS)] ( 2 ), and [CuL 2 (NCS)] ( 3 ), where L 1 is the monoanionic form of 5-diethylamino-2-[(pyridin-2-ylmethylimino)methyl]phenol (HL 1 ), and L 2 is the monoanionic form of 2-[1-(2-piperidin-1-ylethylimino)ethyl]phenol (HL 2 ), have been synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical methods, as well as single crystal X-ray determination. The Cu atoms in the complexes are coordinated by the donor atoms of the Schiff base ligands and nitrogen atom of the pseudohalide ligands, forming square planar geometry. The complexes showed effective urease inhibitory activities. Complex 1 showed the most urease inhibitory activity, with IC 50 value of 1.5 ± 1.1 μM. Molecular docking study of the complexes with Helicobacter pylori urease was performed. As a result, complex 1 matches well with the cavity of the active center of the urease, and forms weak interaction with residues ASP 316, LEU 318, MET 317, CYS 321, HIS 322 and ARG 328. A new benzohydrazone compound N ′-(3-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4-methoxybenzohydrazide (H 2 L) was prepared. Reaction of H 2 L and acetohydroxamic acid (HAHA) with VO(acac) 2 in methanol gave the complex [VOL(AHA)]. Both H 2 L and the oxovanadium complex were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV–vis and 1 H NMR spectra, and single crystal X-ray diffraction. H 2 L was also characterized by high-resolution mass spectrum. Thermal analysis of the oxovanadium complex was carried out. The benzohydrazone ligand, in its dianionic form, coordinates to V atom through the phenolate oxygen, imino nitrogen and enolate oxygen. The acetohydroxamic acid coordinates to V atom through the carbonyl oxygen and deprotonated hydroxyl oxygen. The V atom is in octahedral coordination. H 2 L, HAHA and the oxovanadium complex were tested for their urease inhibitory activities. The percent inhibition at concentration of 100 μmol·L −1 on Helicobacter pylori urease is 78% for the oxovanadium complex. The IC 50 value for the complex is 36.5 μmol·L −1 . Molecular docking study was performed to study the inhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two novel quaternary mercury-thioarsenates(III) CsHgAsS 3 (1) and Rb 2 HgAsS 3 (SH) (2) were synthesized under solvothermal conditions by using thiophenol as a mineralizer, and compound 2 exhibits excellent photoelectric response property. • Two novel quaternary mercury-thioarsenates(III) were synthesized solvothermally. • CsHgAsS 3 possesses a unique two-dimensional (2D) layered structure. • Rb 2 HgAsS 3 (SH) exhibits excellent photoelectric response property. Two novel sulfides CsHgAsS 3 (1) and Rb 2 HgAsS 3 (SH) (2) were prepared under solvothermal conditions by using thiophenol as a mineralizer. Compound 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / n (no. 14) [ a = 10.121(5) Å, b = 6.662(3) Å, c = 10.442(5) Å, β = 94.716(8)°, V = 701.68(60) Å3, and Z = 4]. The structure of compound 1 contains [HgS 3 ] n 4n- helical chains composed of HgS 4 tetrahedra by sharing S corners. Adjacent [HgS 3 ] n 4n- chains are connected by AsS 3 units to form two-dimensional (2D) [Hg 2 As 2 S 6 ] n 2n– layers with Cs+ ions between the anionic layers. Compound 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (no. 62) [ a = 9.2524(7) Å, b = 7.0817(5) Å, c = 14.7023(11) Å, V = 963.34(12) Å3, and Z = 4]. The structure of 2 contains one-dimensional (1D) [Hg 2 As 2 S 6 (SH) 2 ] n 4n- chains composed of HgS 4 tetrahedra and AsS 3 trigonal pyramids by corner-sharing with charge-balancing Rb+ cations between the chains. The band gap values measured by UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra are 2.64 eV and 2.62 eV for CsHgAsS 3 (1) and Rb 2 HgAsS 3 (SH) (2), respectively. The photoelectrochemical experiments indicate that compound 2 exhibits excellent photoelectric response property. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
